Town Council Resignation

Please accept a very sad letter to write to you as I have inevitably now resigned from Holt Town Council due to my election as the Member of Parliament for North Norfolk. hope you would consider publishing this as I have several people I would like to thank and setting all politics aside, I am a Holt boy at heart. I grew up in the town, went to school in the town and worked for many years here. In 2009 I became a Town Councillor and have spent over a decade on the council, winning a few elections in that time! It was the standing down of the lovely Jean Corbett-Jarvis that started this unlikely journey o to Parliament. Jean told me she was standing down from Holt Town Council in July 2009, which subsequently triggered the ďŹ rst election I won. Today, I am proud to always be able to pop in and see Jean when I can and hugely value the friendship we still have. I am incredibly proud to have been the Mayor of my hometown in 2015 – 2017 and proud of my record. As Mayor we delivered the Holt Owl Trail, restored the town sign with the wonderful WI, started the maintenance team, won awards for Holt in Bloom and kick started the project to ďŹ nd a new building for us, which resulted in Nelson House. I was disappointed not to deliver the Cley Road car park but that was out of my hands. Nevertheless, there were some good achievements which I am proud of. As you know, I did it because I cared and still do, enormously about my roots and wanted to make a dierence in the town I grew up in. I have loved helping countless individuals and have got involved in many community projects, serving on the Holt Youth Centre and latterly raised thousands for charity as the Chairman of the Holt 1940s Group. Over the years there are too many clubs or societies to mention here, that I’ve enjoyed being part of. It was never done for any recompense and it was never done with any eye on becoming your Member of Parliament. Some things emerge in life which you never expect, but that passion to do more on a wider stage and shape the Country we live in came from the acorn of sitting around the table at Holt Town Council. Many have said how proud they are that a Holt boy did become your Member of Parliament, and I paid tribute to that in my Maiden speech, as did I pay tribute to my Step-Father who sadly never got to see me achieve this but inspired me to help others by getting involved in local politics. I have made many friends, around the table at Holt Town Council. Indeed, many were close personal friends of my Stepfather and, I thank Bryan Payne and John Allison as two such friends who guided and helped me over the years.

I must also mention two other people who have been such inspirations around the table and have been the most tremendous support for me over the years. Firstly, Michael Hill who has been a bastion for Holt on and o the Council all his life. He was a tower of strength as my Vice Chairman and our work on the Holt Owl Trail, is a permanent reminder of our wonderful town’s history. Thank you for being such a champion for the best interests of the town and for the encouragement you always gave me which in no small way led me on the path to Westminster. Secondly, and it is with enormous sadness that I write this. But the late Philip High provided me with huge inspiration in my political life and was incredibly kind and generous in his support of me and in all things for the good of Holt. When I ďŹ rst became Mayor, his calmness, experience and guidance was always there, and he taught me an enormous amount. Like so many I miss him dearly and wish he was with us today to witness how life panned out. The true mark of the man was that partisan colours never ever interfered with friendship. Any political debate and disagreement always remained respectful and digniďŹ ed. A true gentleman to the core. It has been an immense privilege to have sat around the table with so many people who have done so much for this town. It has also been an out and out privilege to get to know you all. Clearly with my new role, that of being a town councillor must now end. It is therefore with huge sadness that I must resign but thank you for all the great friendships. I’ve loved the ‘cut and thrust of making things happen’ and will see you all soon again. Fond regards Duncan or the Hon Duncan Baker MP as I am getting to terms with!

County Councillor News from County Councillor Sarah Butikofer

sarah.butikofer.cllr@norfolk.gov.uk or 07968 897235

Well at least the storms seem to have stopped for now, although they have left us with some nasty showers. Highways have been out and about doing some repairs around Holt and the rest of the Division recently, and anything that you may already have reported to me, is programmed in for the next couple of weeks. It is taking a great deal longer than any of us would like to get the lights ďŹ xed on the new roundabout at Heath Farm in Holt, but when I was out and about again with the highways engineer yesterday he promised to chase Amey again. Several of you have written or emailed regarding your concerns with parking on the Hempstead Road, when I was out with Steve yesterday we looked at the issue for ourselves. Although there were undoubtedly a lot of cars parked in this location, the only way to get a yellow line put in would be to apply for a TraďŹƒc Regulation Order which would probably cost in the region of ÂŁ10,000 even for that small distance, and with objections a lot more. The new pinch point and other road traďŹƒc calming measures are due to come into force in April so we will review again after they have had a chance to settle. In better news the new children’s play area is now open in Holt Country Park. We had a wonderful afternoon celebrating the opening and lots of local families came along to try out the new equipment. Made of a hardwood which should last longer and is more durable, its also great fun with bug seesaws, a zip line and a swing for parents to use with their little ones. Everyone who came along to show us how to use the equipment went home with a goody bag and a full tummy after enjoying sandwiches and cakes from Hetty’s. It was also wonderful to see so many people out planting trees when I was there, I went along to lend a hand but unfortunately arrived just as everyone went o for a lunch break! Lots of community groups have been helping the Country Park rangers and I would like to thank all of them for their hard work planting thousands of trees is hard work but the results are going to be wonderful. The rangers have started by strengthening the boundaries of the park and planting some larger fruit trees in the buttery walk. It has also been brought to my attention that some residents in the Cley area are having problems with internet connections and speeds, I am talking to County Hall and NNDC to see if we can locate the source of the problem and what can be done to resolve it. Finally look out for a group of us in Holt during the beginning of April as we celebrate the great British spring clean and do a litter pick in the area. As always if I can be of help or assistance on any of these or other matters please do not hesitate to contact me. Hopefully by the next time of writing the showers will be getting lighter and we will be having more of our wonderful blue sky days.

News from The Venue

Huge thanks to See Thru Cleaning of Fakenham for their amazing hard work and charitable rates in helping us to transform the Hall, which now looks like new. It is now a lovely, bright clean room in which to enjoy our many and various clubs and activities at the Centre. Sadly, one of the realities of running a Charity with an older building is that maintenance can rear its head and cause a bit of a headache from time to time. Following on from the last 2 storms, the Centre has sustained damage to the roof of the boiler room, resulting in asbestos becoming disturbed. This has meant a full diagnostic as to the safety of the room, which has necessitated removal of the asbestos and part of the structure. Unfortunately, this is not a quick or cheap fix, and we are pursuing an insurance claim to cover the work. We are also fortunate to have the sponsorship of local businesses to help us, through highly competitive quotes. Our sincere thanks go to Lee Woodrow of Woodrow’s Builders, Allisons Plumbers and WEAAR Asbestos removal company, for their generous support throughout this episode. Work should commence on 30th March, as there is no immediate danger having sealed off the area. It’s not all grim news however, as we continue to attract new User Groups to the Centre, meaning more interesting local Community projects and groups for local people to enjoy at their Community Centre. I know that there have been some concerns from a small number of people that our new Arts direction, and our rebranding, means we are abandoning our original remit of being Holt Community Centre. Far from it! We are increasing the number of interesting ways in which the community can enjoy their centre, and the diversity of people and groups who come in to enjoy the facility. It is also important to raise the profile of the Charity as much as we can, to increase support and bookings to the Centre, and awareness that the Centre is available for private hire. All these things go towards securing this facility for the people to enjoy into the future. The Community Centre was built by the people of Holt for its residents, and the Charity that runs it, Holt Community Centre Association, remains in service to them and the town. As ever, if anyone does have any questions regarding the Charity or the Centre, we welcome you to come into the Centre anytime Monday to Friday, 10 – 2pm, to discuss them – we operate an open-door culture and always welcome feedback and consultation with the community. Don’t forget to pop into the CHAT café on a Monday morning 10am to 1pm, which exists to support people who struggle with mental health challenges and is run by Holt Community Café. The café provides a safe and friendly environment for people to meet up, enjoy refreshments and support each other. Holt Community Café also runs on a Thursday lunchtime, providing a solid 2 course home cooked lunch for any who would like to come and enjoy social time and lunch together. All are welcome and there is no charge for the lunch, although donations are gratefully received. There is more information about all our regular user groups, as well as Arts Projects, Cinema and Theatre on our new website, www.thevenueholt.com, or call us on 01263 713427. Holt Film Festival Update

We were so thrilled to see so many people coming to our first Film Festival at the Venue. Feedback was incredibly positive, and many people came to our great collection of screenings, despite the weather and an England rugby match on Sunday! On behalf of the Charity and all who attended, I would like to thank the team who have been planning it for so many months, Phil Barrett, without whom this wouldn't have happened- we are blessed to have you on board- Susan Williams and her wonderful team of volunteers- whose cheerful manner and organisational skills made it all go so smoothly, June Clarke and David Cramer, Tom Dick, Giselle Moorhouse, our Patron Anwen, Lady Hurt for her amazing support and interviews and the support of the Sir John Hurt Film Trust, and last but not least our incredible team of Venue Volunteers who worked so hard all weekend cooking delicious food and clearing up. It was such a success we are already planning next year's event!

Hempstead Road Link

Dear Jo, Does anyone know when the Hempstead Road Link Road - connecting the new roundabout on the A148 to Hempstead Road - will actually open? (It has been promised since 2013.) Equally importantly, when will the related HGV ban on that section of Hempstead Road be put in place? This will enable HGV traffic to be routed away from Hempstead Road through the industrial estate and the Lovell Homes Heath Farm development and onto that roundabout. Yours, John Martin

Holt Film Festival

Dear Jo, Just a line to say how enjoyable Holt’s film festival was. I had not been in the community centre for some time and I found it had improved tremendously. People have worked hard to make it look so good and feel so comfortable. There was a very good choice of films and the food was delicious. Hopefully it is the start of a continuing enterprise. Thank you very much, Jean Jones

Zero Balancing

Zero Balancing is a technique that aims to harmonise bone structure with the energy flowing through it to release held tension, improve tissue elasticity and relieve pain. After a Zero Balancing session clients report “feeling good” with less aches and pains, feeling calmer, less anxious, less stressed and in many cases the pain has completely gone. What happens in a Zero Balancing session? Lying clothed and on your back in a relaxed position I will gently press into the tissues covering your bones ie. skin, muscle and the connective tissues of tendons and fascia looking for lack of elasticity and places where you hold tension. At the same time I will be evaluating the range of movement in your joints. Here’s an example; when I press into the ribs I’m looking for spring- like responses from each rib. If tension is held in the area the ribs will be rigid showing there’s restriction in the joints where the ribs and spine meet. People with lack of rib flexibility often complain of pain beneath or around their shoulder blades, feel restricted turning their head or have a stiff back or backache. To release the held tension I apply sustained gentle pressure with my fingers into the area. Then I will re-evaluate the area looking for that all-important rib flexibility. When the held tension is released so are the symptoms of pain and stiffness. Is Zero Balancing safe? Yes. Zero Balancing touch is effective and gentle and it doesn’t involve manipulation of your joints so whatever the reason for your discomfort it is worth giving Zero Balancing a try. Zero Balancing practitioner at Holt Holistic Centre is Carole O’Shaughnessy Qualified in 2007, in practice at Holt and Dereham. Contact Holt Holistic Centre 01263 711898 or Dereham 01362 696964.

Kelling Probus Club

11 Upper Brook Street, Ipswich, Suffolk, IP4 1EG Telephone: 01473 230330 “Let your hearing blossom” say Aylsham audiologists As spring has sprung, one local business is encouraging anyone experiencing hearing difficulties to ‘let their hearing blossom’ by attending a special event in Hoveton. Norfolk hearing care specialist The Hearing Care Centre, offers award winning hearing care services from 27 centres across East Anglia. They are encouraging those living in the local area to hear to their full potential this April by holding a ‘Hearing Care Day’ at Aylsham Surgery between 9am and 5pm on Wednesday 29th April 2020. During the event, the company’s expert team will be providing free hearing assessments (usually £30), along with complimentary professional advice about your hearing test results and possible solutions that could help improve your hearing. All services are available by appointment only. Managing Director and founder of The Hearing Care Centre, Karen Finch, said “Early identification of hearing loss is key in maintaining hearing health. Having your hearing checked regularly is the best way to identify any degree of hearing loss and to take the earliest possible action. The first step towards better hearing is as easy as making an appointment for a hearing test. From that point we will do all of the hard work for you.” To book an appointment call The Hearing Care Centre on Freephone 0800 096 2637 or visit www.hearingcarecentre.co.uk/events for more information.

Kelling Probus met today for our February meeting at the usual venue, The Dales Country Club, with a good turnout of members. The as usual, superb lunch, was met with unusual glee as it was a rather good bangers and mash! Our delight was compounded by a superb dessert of chocolate torte with a sponge base and ice cream. Our guest speaker, Michael Barrett gave us a talk on the Samaritans. Frankly, I expected a rather depressing treaty but what an uplifting experience for us in discovering the kindness and professionalism with which the desperate souls who contact them are heard; not judged; encouraged and often averted from suicide. All this with no official support and solely financed by donations. Our next meeting is an AGM on 19th March. Again, our best wishes to all and our thanks to The Dales. Gary Mitchell.

Telephone Befriending with Age UK Norfolk

IT’S BRAIN OF BRISTON TIME AGAIN!

Bill* started to get calls from Age UK Norfolk’s Telephone Befriending Service after losing his wife of 68 years. He went through a very difficult period; he would get upset in the bank when anyone was kind to him. His daughter contacted the service to ask for some companionship for her father. She said, “We didn’t realise these phone calls would be so good. He absolutely loves the quiz too”. In 1951, Bill married his love, Iris*, after five years of courting. The couple travelled a lot and used to enjoy sequence dancing together. They have a large family and have too many great-grandchildren to count. Bill, who continues to receive calls from the service says, “Age UK Norfolk is a bit of a lifesaver. The telephone calls make my day and they really helped when I was struggling after I lost my wife.” Public Health Norfolk has identified that 38,000 older people in Norfolk are lonely. Age UK Norfolk’s Telephone Befriending Service offers people aged 60 and over companionship by phone with one of our friendly volunteers. Befriending is a chatty weekly call and also offers the opportunity to take part in a fun quiz; helping ease feelings of loneliness and isolation. It sounds simple but can make a real difference to an older person’s life. The volunteer makes the call from their own home and the cost of the call can be reclaimed. Training and full support is provided. More volunteers are needed. Can you spare half an hour a week to help? For further information please contact the Volunteer Coordinator on 01603 785210, volunteering@ageuknorfolk.org.uk. *Names have been changed

It’s that time of year again when people rush to exercise their quizzing skills (or lack of them!) when the Copeman Centre at Briston once again puts on one of its legendary ‘Pictures and Sounds’ quiz nights. The date for this one is Saturday April 25th, the time is 7pm, and the sounds, pictures and video clues on the big screen will come at you fast and furious - some easy, some hard, some that need lateral thinking, and some just downright funny! For just a fiver, you get the quiz, a Jacket Potato supper, a pudding, and tea or coffee. If you want to bring your own wobbly juice, we can even supply glasses! We are looking for teams of four, but we always have a few odd people (you know what we mean!) who can make up the numbers - and some of them are actually quite clever! There is a prize for the winning team, and also a booby prize for the team who gets the same number of points as the UK does in Eurovision. It’s all great fun, and everyone is welcome - book now by ‘phoning 01263 860844 - and advance booking is essential - we had to turn loads of last-minute would-be quizzers away last time as we were full! As usual with our quizzes, all proceeds will benefit the Copeman Centre’s fundraising.

MOTHERING SUNDAY 22ND MARCH 2020 10.30am Parish Family Eucharist At which posies of flowers will be blessed and distributed. Families particularly welcome.

Dear Friends

We live in uncertain times, though perhaps we always have. Yet it may feel more than ever like the present world faces an uncertain future. With a rapidly changing climate affecting the lives of billions of people and the balance of nature; a global virus that could so easily could turn into a pandemic; millions of Syrian refugees currently overwhelming Turkey, knocking on Europe’s door; our own countries future with the European Union still far from being settled; there is indeed a great deal of uncertainty. Often with uncertainty comes anxiety and with anxiety fear. What will the future hold for humanity, for the planet, of each one of us? Who really knows? And if we are in danger of being overcome with feelings of impending doom and gloom then perhaps properly used the holy season of Lent may just come to our aid. Characterised by prayer, study, self-examination and works of charity and mirroring the forty days Jesus spent in the wilderness being tempted by the devil, Lent provides us with an opportunity to focus on what really matters. We are invited not just to think about those issues that concern us in a selfish way, but the important things that will help to make us better people. One commentator on Lent suggests that properly used Lent gives us a chance to prepare for the days ahead. He writes, “Of course we do not know what the future holds for us. That is why is so important for us to have a solid foundation on which to base the future God has conceived for each of us. Preparation for the future does not necessarily mean making endless plans, but it does mean sorting out our values: those important principles that underlie our relationship with each other, with creation and, above all, with God.” Whether you are a person of faith or not, it does no harm to occasionally take time out to consider what really is important to us. When faced with uncertainty, anxiety and possibly fear it does us good to reflect on what really matters to us. What are the values on which we build on lives? Who really is important to us? If we can answer these questions honestly it may encourage and motivate us to act. When we can put life into some sort of perspective we are more likely to challenge injustice and wrong, to reach out to the poor and needy, to extend the offer of help to our neighbour, to support the innocent victim of hatred and conflict, to welcome the stranger and the marginalised, and to care for the gift of creation. In uncertain times such action surely brings hope and will ultimately cast out fear; enabling us to face the future, whatever it may hold for us, with confidence. Every blessing, Fr. Howard

Stress free cats (and vets!)

Any one who has ever owned a cat will recognise how particular they can be with their likes and dislikes and the challenges this often poses in caring for them. Here at Toll Barn Vets we have always known how important specialised care is to all our patients including even the most mischievous of cats! We are extremely proud to have been awarded Gold Standard Feline Friendly Practice status for the 4th consecutive year by the International Society for Feline Medicine, a leading authority on feline care. We are delighted to be one of only 4 practices within the entire of Norfolk to achieve this award. How does this help reduce stress for your cat? Being recognised as a Gold Standard Feline Friendly practice means we have been inspected and have demonstrated our high standard of care for cats. This includes having a separate waiting area complete with calming pheromone diffusers for worried cats with special areas to raise and cover cat baskets to help minimise stress. The hospital ward is a “cat only” area to prevent any stress caused by being able to see dogs and also has pheromone diffusers and large insulated kennels complete with hiding holes and varieties of food to keep cats comfortable during their stay. Our equipment and facilities for investigating disease and performing surgical procedures including techniques such as blood pressure monitoring, tonometry (measuring intraocular pressure), X-rays including dental x-ray, ultrasound, endoscopy, CT scanner and in house laboratory have been rated at the highest level which means we can diagnose and treat cats quickly thus reducing the length of their stay with us. In honour of our recent award (and our love of feline patients) we are offering free of charge healthchecks with our qualified veterinary nurses for all our feline patients so that we can spot any signs of disease early and offer the best possible chance of successful treatment.

Contesting a Will Gerald Bloye Hayes + Storr

A family member, close friend, or loved one passes away and you find what you believe to be a clear error with their last Will in that it does not reflect the true intentions of the person making the Will. What can you do about it? The starting point is that the law respects the wishes of the person who has died (“the testator”), even if the last Will did not accord with what family and friends were expecting. However if you suspect that the deceased’s real wishes have not been followed, or that the Will has not been made correctly, the Will may be invalid and you could mount a legal challenge. The grounds for contesting a Will include: • Lack of testamentary capacity: this means that the testator making the Will was not of sound mind when the Will was created and signed. The testator must understand the full content of their estate and understand who they are choosing to include and exclude. • Forgery and fraud: a Will may be contested if there are valid grounds to suggest that it has been forged in some way. • Undue influence or coercion: there may be a claim if the evidence suggests that the testator had been coerced by other persons into including in their Will provisions that they would not otherwise have included. • Failure to duly execute the Will: the rules for executing a Will are strict. The testator must sign their Will in the presence of at least two witnesses who are present at the time of signing. The witnesses must confirm that they have seen the Will signed by the testator. If there is evidence to suggest otherwise then the Will may be rendered invalid due to lack of due execution. • The Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependents) Act 1975: a claim can be made by a person such as a spouse, partner or child for whom adequate provision should have been made in the Will and was not. Contesting a Will can be a complex process and expensive in terms of legal costs. It is important that you act as quickly as possible when deciding to contest a Will as stringent time limits may apply. In some cases, your solicitor may advise you to lodge a “caveat” which means that an official Grant of Probate cannot be issued and the estate, therefore, will not be distributed without your notification. And so, let us hope that they both live happily ever after. If you have reason to believe a Will is invalid and would like to obtain legal advice please contact Hayes + Storr on 01553 778900 or email law@hayes-storr.com.

Registered Veterinary Nurse Lorna Debbage is Toll Barn Vets Cat Advocate and has some top tips for bringing your cat to the vets. Cats are independent and territorial animals. They dislike change and need to feel in control of their surroundings to feel secure. This can make a trip to the vets extremely stressful for the cat and it is important to make visits as stress free as possible. The first step is to Cat Nema make the carrier a positive experience. Encourage your cat to sleep and eat in or near it. Don’t just use it for vet visits as the carrier then becomes associated with a negative experience. Use bedding that smells of home and cover the carrier with a towel or blanket. Pheromone sprays can also be used to reduce stress. Once at the practice ensure the carrier is still covered and avoid placing it on the floor. Cat friendly practices should have raised stands designed for carriers. If the waiting room is busy or there is no separate cat waiting area it can be helpful to leave your cat in the car until the vet is ready to see you. It is important to give reassurance to your cat and take things slowly, a less stressful visit for your cat will also be a less stressful visit for yourself! If you would like to book your free of charge healthcheck appointment or find out more about reducing the stress for your cat please give Toll Barn Vets a call on 01692 407126. ‘MY NORFOLK, MY HOLT' –

with David Harris (North Norfolk Railway)

The next interview, in the ‘My Norfolk, My Holt’ series, at Holt Library, is with David Harris (from the North Norfolk Railway), on Thursday March 19th 2020 between 11.00 and 12.00 noon. David Harris was born in Norwich in 1963. On leaving school he joined Barclays Bank and worked for them for the next 35 years in various clerical and managerial roles initially in the Norfolk area and then via London to Leeds in 1997. He settled, at that time, in York, where he still lives, having left the Bank in 2015 to pursue a life of leisure which has subsequently proved to be very busy. He has been involved in the North Norfolk Railway since being introduced to it by his father in 1972 and has been an active volunteer since. He’s held various voluntary roles within the Railway and it’s supporting charity - The Midland and Great Northern Joint Railway Society - and currently serves on the NNR Board. He is currently a steam engine driver, although time and distance precludes him from doing as much of this as he would wish. North Norfolk has always been his favourite part of the county - the combination of the sea, open skies and the woodland and heath of the Holt - Cromer ridge provide a fascinating combination which always leaves a warm glow on every visit. These sessions are about valuing the contributions of individuals to the life of the community, past and present; about exploring Holt from different perspectives. Participants talk about the Holt and Norfolk they know and love, past and present; how it was when they first knew it, and how it is now, both from a personal and a professional point of view. Recordings of past sessions of “My Norfolk, My Holt' are available as part of the Norfolk Heritage Centre Podcast webpage, which can be found here: www.thenorfolkheritagecentrepodcast.wordpress.com/my-norfolk-my-holt

Booking for these sessions is recommended and helpful. (Telephone Holt Library on 01263 712202.) The event is free but donations to the library are welcome. Tea and coffee are available. ‘My Norfolk, My Holt’ – is a way of bringing together different members and sections of the community, as well as valuing the place of the library. The next ‘My Norfolk, My Holt, is with Julie Alford (part 2 from the age of 18), on Thursday the 16th of April 2020.

We think we are living in difficult times; so did Elisha

Come along on Monday the 23rd of March as Reverend Rich Boothroyd from St Michael’s Church, Southfields takes us on a journey exploring Elisha’s story to help inspire and equip us to minister to others. 1. Are you listening? – Elisha was proactive and known in his community. He is approachable. How are we as individuals and churches known & listening to people & their needs in our communities? 2. How can I help? – Elisha gets stuck in, understands the problem, tries to be part of the solution, bringing God in. 3. What is in your house? – We aren’ t always the solution. We often underestimate what God has given us… he can use the little we have if we are available. 4. Have you stopped collecting? – the woman collects as many bottles as possible and God fills them all with oil. It wasn’t an obvious solution, but God’s way. What prayers have you stopped praying? Are we open to new ways of ministry, even if it doesn’t immediately make sense to us? We are really looking forwards to welcoming Rich who is an Associate Minister at St Michael’s Church. He planted Ackroydon Community Church on a local urban housing estate. Rich has two young daughters and enjoys running, cooking and reading.

www.holtchronicle.co.uk

So do come and join us for an evening of fellowship, wonderful worship followed by the main talk. There will also be a time for prayer ministry at the end of the evening. We look forwards to seeing you from 7pm for coffee, cakes and chat, for a 7.30pm start. Norfolk Life by Richard Shepheard. Country clothing and Norfolk civility.

I count it a great privilege to be old enough to remember the days when the Norwich Cattle Market was held on the Castle Hill in the old city. If I was Norwich born, I was certainly Norfolk bred and loved to see the stock and stockmen on Saturdays on 'the Hill' where they had come for centuries. However, there was another Saturday feature of the Hill which had nothing to do with livestock although timed to coincide with it. This was Sid's clothing stall and that genteel old man would bring hampers of gents' second-hand clothing up from London having a stall on the west (Castle Meadow) end of the Hill. My father loved to trade with him. He bought several suits and sundries and was fond of drawing attention to the aristocratic origins of some of them. "Have you seen the latest from my tailor?" he would ask revealing, with a flourish a label inside the jacket which showed that it had belonged to Lord Foley. His favourite was a suit in light, tight, fawn tweed which comprised jacket, waistcoat and two pairs of trousers which he dubbed his 'MacMillan' suit. It had something of the 'Thirties grouse moor look about it and the contemporary prime minister of the 'Fifties, leader of that name and day. All good things pass way. The Castle Mall replaced the cattle market and old Sid will have gone to his place many a year ago, though I can still see him in long dark overcoat with tape measure around his neck and hear the pleasant East End accent. In the sixty odd years since I have had two rather reassuring experiences relating to clothing. Several decades ago I spotted in a sporting magazine a beautiful olive green cord shooting coat advertised by a special firm of Lancashire. I phoned them and they gave me my nearest stockist, a superstore not far from Binham Priory. The Lancashire voice at the other end said: "Recent retail price £34.00." So I placed an order with the Norfolk store and a fortnight later went to collect it. I saw it as soon as I entered the shop and asked what I owed. Old Norfolk sitting at his desk said: "Would £19.00 be orright?" It certainly was and entirely unexpected! Some time later I went to Norwich and bought a pair of moleskin trousers at half-price, nearly £40.00. Then, not long after, I was browsing round a charity store for a loved one when I saw a pair of heavyweight moleskin trousers in olive green and around my size. They were marked up at a fiver, so I went up and asked the lady at the counter to measure the inside leg. It was half-an-inch too short but, she graciously said: "I'll take off fifty pence." I adjusted them and my £4.50 p trousers were perfect. So I had my olive green cord jacket and moleskin trousers and repeated washings brought them to the same colour and me the satisfaction that they were both procured in Norfolk and with the civility of the old county.

The Gallant Gardener

At this time of the year, rhubarb is beginning to come into season, whether it is from the forcing houses of the growing triangle in Yorkshire or your garden. This vegetable! has become much more popular and is very versatile. It originates from China and was named as it grew on the banks of the Volga river in Russia. It was used for stomach, liver and lung disorders, venereal disease and snake bites have all been treated with rhubarb, whose earliest recorded use, as powdered roots, date back to 2,700 BC. Despite its purgative, detoxifying qualities, rhubarb hasn’t always been eaten with such relish as it is today. Rhubarb seeds first arrived in Europe in the 16th Century, when it had medicinal, rather than culinary value, a situation that lasted until the 18th Century, when its use as drug declined. Eating the stalks probably arose as a way of utilizing rhubarb’s curative properties. Rhubarb from the garden in general, should not be eaten from July as the oxalic acid comes down into the stalks. Surprisingly low in calories but high in calcium, potassium and healthy promoting fibre, rhubarb has recently been found to lower blood cholesterol. Rhubarb can be grown in containers or the garden and apart from a top dressing of good manure or general fertilizer it needs very little attention. After about five years it will need digging up splitting and putting in a fresh position where it will get warmth and rain. A recipe we have used for many years and can be eaten both hot and cold is :-Rhubarb and Orange Meringue 3/4 lb trimmed rhubarb, 4 individual sponge cakes, 2 oz castor sugar, 2 tablespoons water, 1 large orange rind and juice, small pinch of cinnamon. Meringue topping: 2 egg whites, 4 oz castor sugar. Slice the sponge cakes through the middle and cut the rhubarb into thin slices. Into a 2-pint ovenproof pie dish put a layer of sponge cake, half the rhubarb, sprinkle with half the sugar, cinnamon and rind and juice of the orange. Continue with another layer in the same way and finally add Free measuring and delivery throughout north Norfolk Fitting service available • Open 6 days a week the water. Cover and cook at approx. 190C or gas mark 5 for 35 to 45 Quality that speaks for itself minutes until the rhubarb is tender. www.maranellohome.co.uk Whip egg whites stiffly, gradually add New website coming soon! the sugar and fold in. Pile on top and bake a further 10-12 mins at the 01263 711979 same temperature.

Two children ordered their mother to stay in bed one Mother’s Day morning. As she lay there looking forward to breakfast in bed, the smell of bacon floated up from the kitchen. But after a good long wait she finally went downstairs to investigate. She found them both sitting at the table eating bacon and eggs. “As a surprise for Mother’s Day,” one explained, “We decided to cook our own breakfast.”

Snug

Meat Free Magic

There’s nothing like home cooking, and when you eat that way habitually, it’s very hard to then eat highly processed food. There’s a myth that cooking from scratch means hours in the kitchen, shopping every day for fresh food, and surely, we are all far too busy to do that? But it is a myth‌getting a good stock of easy recipes under your belt is what you should aim for, to enable you to be able to whip up nutritious, wholesome dishes without too much time or prep. This one is great, as it uses ingredients that you’re either likely to have around anyway, like onions, garlic, celery and leeks, plus good store cupboard staples such as stock cubes, tinned lentils, tomato puree and marmite. Mushrooms are highly nutritious and very cheap. And don’t underestimate good old Bisto gravy granules (there are some processed foods that are worth having on the shelf) ‌ there’s a reason they’ve been around as long as they have! I use the Favourite flavour in the red round container, as they are vegetarian friendly and have the nicest taste, easily adding a wonderful layer of flavour to many dishes. Miso is another product that I never allow myself to run out of‌it’s a fermented food that is great for your gut health, and an absolute hero of flavour, imparting a wonderful umami depth to stews, casseroles and soups. It is easily obtainable in all good health food shops. All in all, this is a definite winner of a recipe – high veg and protein, low cost and easy to make. Make ahead of time and pop in the oven when you get home from work for a delicious, ‘meaty’ and nutritious home cooked end to your day.

Put your potatoes on to boil in a large pan of salted water. Very gently fry the onion, leek, garlic and celery in a good slug of olive oil, taking care not to let it burn. Add in the mushrooms, and stir well, allowing the mushrooms to release their juices and then pop in the lentils. Add the thyme, marmite, tomato puree and stock cube, and add enough hot water to just cover the contents, stirring well. Allow to simmer for a few minutes, and then stir in your miso paste. Thicken with a little Bisto gravy granules or a little corn flour, until you have a good thick gravy. Turn into a deep oven proof dish. When potatoes are soft, drain well and mash with a good dollop of butter, salt and pepper and a little milk. Spoon the mash onto the top of the lentil mixture, taking care to cover it completely and seal the edges. Rough up the top with a fork and add a little more seasoning. Place in a preheated oven on 180° for approximately 30 – 40 minutes, until the top is golden, and the dish is piping hot all the way through. Serve with a generous portion of green vegetables. Wartime US plane crew remembered 75 years after crash in Field Dalling

A permanent memorial has been unveiled to honour the US service men who lost their lives when a B-24 Liberator crashed 75 years ago on the outskirts of Field Dalling during WW2.

The stricken plane crashed while attempting to return to its home base at Attlebridge, near Norwich. It resulted in the deaths of six crew members and also two Italian POW voluntary farm workers. The events were researched by a small team of local people who also retrieved several crash items during their investigations, which were used to confirm the location of the crash and the plane’s identity. The memorial was paid for through voluntary donations and while the actual stone plinth is located down a very muddy farm lane, the engraved steel plaque was, for the purpose of ceremony, moved to inside the village hall from where the ceremony could be performed with much greater ease and comfort. A Memoriam service was followed by the attendance of military representatives in dress uniform from the US 100ARF Wing, based at RAF Mildenhall in Suffolk, who provided an honour guard and bugle ceremony. Out of a crew of nine, there were six who lost their lives, with three managing to parachute out before the crash. Two Italian soldiers held at the Pudding Norton internment camp were also killed when the B-24 crashed through the hedgerow where they were working. A fire had developed in one of the plane’s engines shortly after take off from Attlebridge, when the plane was several miles out to sea from Stiffkey. It was carrying a full complement of weapons as well as full fuel tanks containing high octane aviation fuel. The story is both intriguing and poignant. A significant amount of background information and support was also forthcoming from the nephew of the plane’s radio operator who died in the crash and he lives in the USA.

The afternoon of 28th February was very wet and blustery, but the morning was much better weatherwise and also to be able to enjoy the "Big Brew" Coffee Morning. it was our main event of Fairtrade Fortnight. We were delighted to meet many people, including Duncan Baker, M.P. and Madeleine Ashcroft, the Mayor of Sheringham. I'm sure they were happy with the coffee and tea, home-made cakes and biscuits, the quiz,Prize-every-time-tombola and Guess-the cost-ofthe-basket-of-food - all Fairtrade! So we've sent almost £200 to Fairtrade Exchange, which will help to change the lives of farmers and craft workers in the developing World, to increase their yields

Holt WI

On 19th February, Holt WI had the pleasure of welcoming Jason Raper who gave a fascinating talk on the History of the Theatre Royal Norwich He took us back with slides and commentary from the early days of the Theatre when in 1730 an unremarkable public house called The White Swan, in St Peter’s Street was used as a theatre, through to the Theatre Royal of today. Of course, a proper theatre was needed and one was built in 1757 by famous Norwich architect Thomas Ivory on a site next to today’s theatre. Famous actors including Sarah Siddons (who was so popular that she was able to take half the receipts), Paganini, the Italian violinist and even Two Ton Tessie were seen there. Then a theatre was built on the site of today’s theatre but sadly was destroyed by fire in 1934. Undeterred, the owner, Jack Gladwin, rebuilt it and it opened on 30th September 1935. The photograph is from the Souvenir programme of that date. After much applause, questions and a vote of thanks by our President, who is a keen theatre goer, members enjoyed tea and biscuits, chatter and a raffle. The competition was judged by Mr Raper. Next month on the 18th March Holt WI welcomes the speaker the Rev. Penelope Dent who will talk about Amy Johnson, the famous female aviator. New members are always welcome to meetings which are interesting and informative and are great opportunity to make new friends. Granite_Layout 1 08/01/2020 15:20 Page 1 There are also events and outings to be enjoyed.

Walking with Sheringham Ramblers Dates:

WEDNESDAY MARCH 18th: 6.5 mile walk from Stiffkey (Greenways) free NT car parking led by Jane & Mike - contact telephone no: 01263 824885 SUNDAY MARCH 22nd: PLEASE NOTE: 5.5-mile AFTERNOON walk commencing from Baconsthorpe Castle free car park led by Jasmine - contact telephone no: 01263 588822 WEDNESDAY APRIL 1st: 6 Mile walk commencing from Hanworth Car Park (free on road to church) led by Jasmine Contact telephone No: 01263 588822

Solution to No. 279: 1. Rf6! and Black has no effective defence against 2. e5 and 3. Qxh7 mate; 1… h6 2. e3 with 3. Rxh6+ to follow (2… Bxf6 3. Qxh6+), and 1… Nxe4 2. Bxe4 Qxe4 3. Nxe4 is of course hopeless.

No. 280, the fifth of 6 game-positions in the current solving competition, has an interesting situation where the piece (the black B) pinning the white Q is itself pinned (here, by the white R). Black’s next move destroys White’s impending K-side attack and wins material. Difficulty 1.

All walks with the exception of the afternoon ramble on March 22nd commence at 10.00 a.m. If you wish to bring a dog on any walk, please telephone the Walk Leaders beforehand email: info@holtchronicle.co.uk

Update on the Splash Leisure and Fitness Centre

The Splash swimming pool in Sheringham will remain closed in the coming weeks as repair work is undertaken to damage caused by high winds. Following a survey of the building, remedial work will also be carried out to ensure users can continue to enjoy Splash until Sheringham’s new pool opens in 2021. Sarah BĂźtikofer, Leader of North Norfolk District Council, said: “We apologise for the inconvenience this prolonged closure may cause to families and regular users of the swimming pool but our priority has to be the safety of the public and our sta. “This is a building which is coming to the end of its life and is displaying many of the problems associated with ageing infrastructure. Whilst we want to keep it open as we build the new leisure centre, we must ensure it is safe and able to withstand all weathers including high winds. Cllr BĂźtikofer continued: “We are still at the stage of commissioning the work and so, as yet, we do not know exactly how long it will take. Clearly we are keen to ensure the closure is kept to a minimum.â€? Other services at Splash remain open as normal.

Getting into Golf

Blakeney Rowing Club Prepares for The New Season

Over 100 people have taken the opportunity to Get into Golf at the Links Golf Club in West Runton since 2013. The Get into Golf programme, which is supported by England Golf, has proven to be a great way to try golf in a fun and friendly environment. While studies have shown that golf can provide great health benefits with a golfer walking as much as 7 miles in a full round. Likewise, the challenge of the game and social element has been proven to increase mental wellbeing. Another benefit of golf is that it can be played with family and friends of all ages and abilities. Amanda, who has been Getting into Golf since 2018 said, “I have loved my golf lessons at the Links. Dominic is patient, also a good teacher. But more important, golf is fun and I have met new people in my group”. Golf can also fit into your lifestyle by playing 18 holes, 9 holes or by just going out for an hour. Mike, who Got Back into Golf in 2014 said, “The Get into Golf package taught by Dominic at the Links has proved to be one of my best value investments. I joined a small friendly group of varying abilities in a supportive environment. Dominic also provided good follow on support which enabled me to get a handicap and this year I have progressed to being Senior Captain at the Links”. So don’t let crazy golf or pitch and putt be your only experience of golf. Give golf a try with the Get into Golf programme at the Links. You’ll be putting, pitching and driving in no time and also getting out on the fairways. You can Get into Golf with 5 x 1 hour sessions for only £40. The next series starts weekly from Saturday 28th March at 10:30 at the Links Golf Club in West Runton. More dates available. To Get into Golf call Dominic on 01263 83 83 83 or email golfpro@mackenziehotels.com.

The busy winter season continues for your local rowing club with every opportunity being taken to explore the Broads with expeditions starting from the base at Barton Turf. See pictures on the club’s web site of Hoi Larntan, one of the club’s beautiful skiffs, being propelled down the River Ant, and beyond, by crews of happy “Crabbers.” Now preparations are being made for rowing to begin in mid-March on the waters around Blakeney. Teams of club members have been striving hard, in the Bayfield Brecks workshop, to prepare Bluejacket for a summer of rowing to Blakeney Point or towards Cley. It’s lovely to see the gleaming blue and white skiff looking refreshed and ship-shape after much sanding, undercoating and painting. The fun on the water could not happen without the efforts of club members behind the scenes. Everyone is looking forward to a new season full of social expeditions and competitive events. For example, there will be an expedition to the Lake District in April and a Broads Cruise in June; there will also be races at regattas in King’s Lynn, Morston and, of course, Blakeney. What a great year in store! If you wish to be part of the fun, both on and off the water, gain an idea of the club’s activities from crablakeney.wordpress.com then phone club captain Humphrey on 07542371469. Rowing is a great experience and you could take advantage of three trial rows before deciding whether you wish to pay for membership of the club. Coaching and lifejackets are always available. The company is great, and the exercise is healthy. Make contact soon. We’d love to hear from you. Barry Howes.
