Diamond raises money for Walking with the Wounded
One Norfolk lady’s Christmas was made on Friday 22 December as a result of being the lucky winner of a beautiful diamond worth £2000 donated by Webbs Jewellers in Holt in aid of local charity Walking with the Wounded. Since the beginning of November people have had the opportunity to purchase a ticket for £10 to be in with the chance of winning the diamond, with all funds raised going directly to support our wounded ex-servicemen and women.
Cheque Presentation to Wells Community Hospital Trust
Last month Great and Little Snoring WI President, Judith Vertigen presented the proceeds collected from a tree decorated by the WI at Fakenham Parish Church Christmas Tree Festival in December to Wells Community Hospital Trust.
The cheque for £343 was handed to the hospital’s general manger, Samantha Taylor, to go towards their Dementia Hub which caters for those living with dementia and has a variety of weekly activity sessions held at the hospital. These sessions run on Wednesday mornings
The lucky winner was local resident Judith Mitchell, who was over the moon when Olly Webb, Director of Webbs rang her up from the shop to tell her of her exciting win. In total, the diamond competition raised ÂŁ2,050 for Walking with the Wounded. The lucky ticket was drawn on Friday 22nd December by double leg amputee war veteran and local resident Duncan Slater.
Ed Parker, Co-Founder and CEO of Walking with the Wounded commented “We are hugely grateful to Webbs Jewellers – not only was it such a fun idea but hugely generous and the funds raised will significantly improve the lives of our ex-servicemen and women. Such an amount could pay for two veterans to complete our mental health programme or indeed pay for the training and skills needed for an ex-serviceman or woman to get back into employment allowing him/her to regain their independence. Thank you to Olly and all the team at Webbs.
and are driven by a team of passionate volunteers and trained staff members. They are fun, free and upbeat where friends, family, carers and those living with dementia can share a cuppa and make new friends.
“It’s wonderfully generous said general manager Samantha Taylor “with the continued support of the Women’s Institute we are able to maintain these vital services for our local community.
Gt & Little Snoring WI meets on the 2nd Thursday of every month at Kettlestone Village Hall at 7.30pm. If you are interested in joining a lively group of ladies, please telephone 01328 821960.

Diabetes UK North Norfolk Group
Through the North Norfolk Group's fundraising activities last year we are again able to offer a limited number of FREE support holidays, organised by Diabetes UK, during the summer of 2018.
These will be available for children and young people with diabetes between the ages of 7-10 and 11-17 who live in Norfolk.
The holidays are invaluable for the youngsters, allowing them to gain skills and confidence to help them deal with their diabetes among others of the same age. Some go on holiday having never met anyone else with diabetes before. So to be able to leave thinking “I’m not different from anyone else” has to make it all worthwhile.
If your child is at all interested, please encourage him/her to contact Jackie or David on 01692 405492 or email diabetes.uk@hotmail.co.uk All contacts will be acknowledged on a first come first served basis. Whilst we are prepared to fund the holiday, you would be expected to organise travel and provide pocket money.
Details of the holidays for 2018 will be available shortly

Graham was presented with a book token to support his learning, and a bottle of fizz to support his living and laughing - everything that U3A stands for!
Graham and his wife Sue moved to Kettlestone three years ago from Derby, after retirement. They both lived and worked and raised their family in Derby but were familiar with Norfolk from family holidays. They planned to have a long term holiday retreat in North Norfolk after retirement but liked living here so much here that they decided to make it their permanent home.Graham says that living in North Norfolk is like Utopia for them. … Guide Dogs for the Blind have set up a support network for people who are blind or partially sighted in North Norfolk called the North Walsham Guide Dog Forum.
Guide Dogs for the Blind has a network of locally based support forums across the UK. North Norfolk has its very own forum called the North Walsham Guide Dog Forum (NWGDF). This group meets every 3 months in North Walsham.
Chris Waller from Sheringham is visually impaired and a newly appointed volunteer for Guide Dogs as media handler for NWGDF. He commented "The purpose of the forums is to have a community group who can learn from key speakers, share and learn information and to raise issues which maybe concerning those with visual impairments in their local area. The forum can look at ways to resolve those issues with support via community engagement staff from Guide Dogs Organisation, and other subject matter experts. There is also a social element after the forum as some of the attendees enjoy a natter, spot of lunch and

The forum is for: • All people who are blind, partially sighted • Their families, or carers and • Anyone who would like to know more about Guide Dogs or those who may simply want to volunteer or would like to fundraise for the charity – every penny counts!
Current attendees are spread across North Norfolk including Sheringham, Cromer, Mundesley and North Walsham.
"We have got some great guest speakers lined up for this year’s meetings. On 26 April we have Equal Lives and a Guide Dog puppy walker talk-
Chris commented "Although new to the role, I can already appreciate the value of this forum to our community for those sighted and those not. The enthusiasm and willingness of speakers attending the forum is a reflection of the great community spirit in North Norfolk, working together to achieve results. But we'd like to see even more people attend the forum, and learn even more"
Please come along and find out more!
The forum meets at the Black Swan, Swan Loke, North Walsham 11am to 1pm.

Hickling Broad & later Stubb Mill for Winter Raptor Roost on 18 February 12:30pm – 5pm - this event is for both beginners and reasonably experienced birders. We will first look for winter species, particularly wildfowl and waders, at Hickling Broad (a walk of perhaps an hour around the reserve reed-bed) and then walk to Stubb Mill to watch the winter raptor & crane roost. This is a lunchtime and afternoon trip. We will meet at the Hickling NWT car-park NR12 0BW at 12.30 for an initial al fresco lunch (bring your own!). The grid reference is TG 428 222. The NWT Visitor Centre has picnic tables and toilets. Currently their web site does not indicate any opening hours for the cafe. The afternoon raptor-watch is at Stubb Mill, which is reached with a moderate walk from the NWT car-park. Stout footwear or wellies are essential as some areas are wet underfoot. Warm windproof clothing is also essential because the raptor watch involves standing in the open, possibly for a couple of hours, which can be cold, but its also rewarding with the possibility of seeing Common Cranes, Hen Harriers, Marsh Harriers, Merlin, Buzzards, Short -eared and Barn Owls coming in to roost. As the raptors can be distant a telescope is useful if you have one. Children are welcome if accompanied by well-behaved adults, but we regret no dogs. To keep the club's carbon footprint small, please consider car sharing. The walk will be led by Janice Darch.
Felbrigg Park Mid-Week Walk on 21 February 9am – 11am - this walk caters for all levels of ability. We will take a leisurely walk around the Park & Lake, route dependent on the local bird and other wildlife likely to be present on the day. Please wear clothing appropriate to the weather

Pictured is Grumpy who came in on 24 October as an autumn juvenile weighing 240grms.

- footpaths in Felbrigg can be muddy at any time of the year. Meet at Sexton's Lodge car park, off Lion's Mouth, NR11 8PS at the western end of the estate. 'All About Swifts' talk with Dick Newell on 22 February 7.30pm 9:30pm - since his retirement in 2002, Dick Newell has devoted much time to those aerial masters of the sky – swifts. Their noisy acrobatic flights over our towns and villages for just a few short weeks in summer have become increasingly less common in recent years, prompting Dick to find out what could be done to reverse their decline in Britain. As a result, many projects have been implemented and ideas generated, some of which are documented on actionforswifts.blogspot.co.uk. In 2016 Dick and ‘Action for Swifts’ were given a Marsh Award for Innovative Ornithology. His talk will cover the lifestyle of Common Swifts, the reasons for their decline, their migrations, and ideas for nest boxing. Venue - Aylmerton Village Hall, NR11 8PX. Please park along Church Road or in the overflow car park at the church. Please ensure that local residents can still access their driveways and there is sufficient clearance for agricultural vehicles to use the road. A torch might also be helpful, as the village has no street lighting. To keep the club's carbon footprint small, please consider car sharing.
My latest arrival came in on 27 January. Corton was found in a garden under a bush at only 300grms. I don't know how he had managed to survive for so long. I have given him a course of antibiotics and he is slowly gaining weight, so hopefully he will be big enough for a release in April.
Early risers will be starting to awake from hibernation.
REDWINGS REHOMES FIRST DONKEY AT DINOSAUR PARK
followed him around all day!
A little donkey in need of companionship has started the New Year with a new friend after Redwings Horse Sanctuary rehomed its first rescued donkey – to a dinosaur park! Adorable Arnie, a Miniature Mediterranean donkey, had been living alone at the Secret Animal Garden at the Dinosaur Adventure Park, near Norwich, following the passing of his previous companion. Donkeys are sensitive souls who form strong bonds and Arnie’s animal keepers knew he needed a new friend to prevent him feeling lonely, so they approached Redwings for help.
Due to the availability of suitable rescued donkeys, Redwings hadn’t rehomed one of these lovable long-eared creatures before but – as luck would have it – the perfect candidate had just arrived at the Sanctuary! Handsome Addison had come to Redwings within a group of six donkeys from a fellow animal sanctuary in August last year but had yet to form any strong attachments within his herd.
“They’ve settled in well together and share a stable. Addison is even coming over to meet visitors which is lovely and everyone is asking about him. All the team here love him already and we look forward to the boys becoming best buddies!” Redwings currently has 500 rescued horses living in Guardian homes across the country with many going to successfully enjoy all kinds of disciplines from cross country to showing, as well as serve as treasured companions to other horses.
For more information about the Redwings Guardianship Scheme, how to apply and details on the latest horses looking for new homes, visit www.redwings.org.uk/rehoming
So after a thorough medical and behavioural check, Addison was cleared to travel to the Dinosaur Adventure Park where he was happily welcomed by Arnie just before Christmas, and the two have been enjoying each other’s company ever since.
Rachel Angell, Redwings Operations and Rehoming Manager, said: “Donkeys crave company which is why we were delighted to help find Arnie a new friend and we hope he and Addison will be really happy together. “Due to their strong bonds, donkeys normally need to be rehomed in pairs or small groups so it was by chance that lovely Addison arrived at the Sanctuary still looking for his own special champion. With its long history of caring for animals, we knew he would be in safe and loving hands at the Secret Animal Garden – although we never expected to rehome a donkey to a dinosaur park! “We hope this will now pave the way for us to look at rehoming more donkeys in the future.” Nicole Douglass, Secret Animal Garden Manager, added “Arnie’s little face lit up when he saw Addison – he was so happy to see another donkey and

Dementia - What steps can we take to safeguard our loved ones? What can we do to help a family member or close friend following a diagnosis of dementia? It is important to remember that if an individual loses, or starts to lose mental capacity a spouse, next of kin, or family member is not automatically appointed to legally deal with their affairs.
Lasting Powers of Attorney If an individual is diagnosed with dementia, or other condition that means they are likely to require help and Jennifer Nash support in the future, they should consider making a Lasting Power of Attorney. This would allow the individual to appoint specific people they trust implicitly to help them, legally, manage their affairs. This can help safeguard against the person falling victim to financial abuse.
Taking advice from a legal profession is essential here to ensure that the person fully understands the powers they are giving to their attorney and also considers who would be best in the role. We help individuals to explore whether a particular family member or friend is suitable. However, if the individual has not taken steps to make a Lasting Power or Attorney or is at the point where they no longer have sufficient mental capacity, the Court can appoint someone to act on the person's behalf as a Deputy. Deputyship If you are caring for an individual who has been diagnosed with dementia but they do not have sufficient understanding to make a Lasting Power of Attorney you may apply to the Court of Protection for a Deputyship Order. This enables a person who is appointed as Deputy by the court to make decisions on behalf of the person living with dementia in circumstances when the person is unable to make those decisions themselves.
You can apply to be a person's Deputy if you are aged 18 or over. Such applicants tend to be close friends, relatives or legal professionals. The Court can appoint two or more Deputies for one person, if appropriate.
The process of applying to become a person's Deputy can take much longer than if the person had taken steps to make a Lasting Power of Attorney while they were still able to. This is because the person is no longer able to willingly appoint those they trust to act on their behalf. Therefore, the Court requires much more information to be able to make a decision that would be in that person's best interests.
Due to the nature of the application, and the additional work involved, the process of applying to be a person's Deputy is invariably going to be more costly than if the person had made a Lasting Power of Attorney. However,if the person has reached the point where they can no longer make decisions on their own, and there is no Lasting Power of Attorney in place, there is little choice other than to go down this route. We aim to deal with such applications as quickly and cost efficiently as possible. We also ensure we make applicants aware of the projected timescales,
Cley Calling Presents : An evening of poetic-folk music with Jade Cuttle

Jade will be performing for us on Thursday 22 February. The night promises to be an enjoyable evening, with guests enjoying a delicious supper and getting the opportunity to observe the beautiful scenery of the marsh, which is visible from the education centre, whilst listening to the performance.

and possible delays with the Court system, from the outset.
Summary If you are aware that a family member or friend has been diagnosed with dementia we recommend you encourage them to seek legal advice at the earliest opportunity to ensure they get their affairs in order and make a Lasting Power of Attorney. Although this can seem like a daunting task, the help and advice from a skilled lawyer will ensure that process runs smoothly and effectively.
If, however, making a Lasting Power of Attorney is not possible, we suggest a Deputyship application is considered. Our team of trained experts are here to help guide you through this process.
To find out more or discuss your individual requirements in further detail, our dedicated Wills, Trusts and Probate solicitors will be delighted to help. Contact Jennifer Nash for appointments at our North Walsham office on 01692 660230 or Sheringham on 01263 823398.

Jade read literature at the University of Cambridge, and has won a number of competitions and awards such as ‘The National Seafaring Limerick Competition’ and the ‘Foyle Young Poets Award’. Her debut album, Leaves & Lovers, explores the fascinating similarities between trees and humans, and she has performed some of her work on BBC Radio 3 in association with BBC Proms (The Art of Splinters). MP opens new Dementia Inclusive Café in Mundesley
Last month Norman Lamb, Liberal Democrat MP for North Norfolk, met with customers and said a few words to mark the opening of Open Doors, a new café for the elderly and those with complex needs. The café was initiated by Eleanor Jones, Wendy Fredericks, and other members of Mundesley Parish church supported by the Revd Andrew Jones.
Their vision for a community café came early in 2017 when they noticed the need for support and friendships amongst the local community’s older
generations, and for social environments which were inclusive for those with additional needs. Eleanor and Revd Andrew Jones, whose daughter has multiple learning difficulties, have personally experienced the complications carers can face taking their loved ones to public and social places.
Mrs Jones said “There have been many times when it has been easier to stay at home, but the more times I have done this the more confidence I lost. I am sure many people feel this way but don’t know where to start. We hope that the Open Door café has created a place for everyone, somewhere that cares for carers and those who are cared for. A safe space where no one is judged and
eastlaw shortlisted for prestigious award
North Norfolk District Council’s (NNDC) award-winning legal team, eastlaw, has made it to the finals of the LexisNexis Legal Awards 2018 (formerly known as the Halsbury Legal Awards).
eastlaw shares the shortlist with three exceptional legal teams; GLD (Government Legal Department) Grenfell Tower Team, MVF Legal Team and Reprieve. A number of leading figures from the legal profession and beyond have been selected to form the judging panel. The ‘In-House Team of the Year’ award acknowledges the tremendous importance of work done by the legal teams of companies and bodies other than law firms, including those in the public sector. The concept of eastlaw was developed by NNDC’s legal team itself to deliver services both in-house and on behalf of external clients. eastlaw’s innovative and agile approach has not only secured it position as a value for money, specialist legal service which is efficient, effective and highly regarded, it has been recognised nationally with a number of prestigious awards. Cllr. Judy Oliver, North Norfolk District Council’s Cabinet Member for Legal Services, said “Congratulations to eastlaw and yet another, well deserved accolade. Being shortlisted this prestigious award is testament to the team’s excellent track record of service to the Council and to other public sector partners and I, and my colleagues wish them the best of luck for the finals”. The winners of the award will be announced on 15 March at a ceremony in London.
everyone is valued as part of our wonderful community.”
Mr Lamb said “It’s really inspiring to see members of the community creating dementia and complex need-friendly spaces, especially considering the high levels of social isolation that conditions like dementia can lead to. Open Door is a fantastic initiative which I am proud to have opened. I hope it flourishes.” The café was made possible through fundraising on the part of many local businesses and charities, including Friends of Mundesley Inshore Lifeboat, Mundesley Fish and Fry, Affinity Digital Agents, Trunch Village Store, Aviva and TESCO, amongst others. The café hopes to host outside agencies like Age UK in the future to provide wider assistance to those attending the café.

A Grove Miscellany
A few reminiscences of 75 years at The Grove, by John Graveling.
Part 24 1978 to 2005 Continued
strong Christian faith. He walked around in quite a slow ponderous way but when he bowled he was transformed. I don’t know what speed it was but it must have been well up in the 80’s when he really let go. Fortunately his shyness was rapidly overcome when the girls were home as they pulled his leg unmercifully. “What are you like Carl?”
He used to coach the juniors and these young lads thought he was wonderful. The front door bell rang one afternoon and this little lad no more than 10 years old was at the door. “Can Carl come out to play?” This waif of a boy and a great big West Indian! Although Carl had vowed not to eat starchy food it was not long before he took a liking to bread and butter pudding. Ann had to teach him how to make it. The fruiterers in Cromer sponsored him by supplying us twice a week with bananas.
Being quite involved in cricket we were asked if we would host a West Indian by the name of Carl Tuckett. Carl played for the Leeward Islands with Sir Viv Richards, Curtley Ambrose and a number of other test match players. Carl also represented The West Indies in a one day game against England and captured the wickets of two of England’s best batsmen, Alec Stewart and Graeme Hick, but for some unknown reason was never picked again even though he was one of the best all rounders in the Caribbean. When Carl arrived he was terribly shy and hardly lifted his head or said very much. He was very careful about what he would eat, avoiding all starchy food, and he went to the gym regularly to keep up his fitness. He did not smoke or drink. He was a big man with wide powerful shoulders and a
During cricket week there was a match against Sheffield Squirrels. Carl was not due to play that day but was implored to do so because Sheffield had a giant of a West Indian in their team called Lesroy Weeks. Lesroy had played for Yorkshire against the West Indian Tourists and taken 6 wickets and bowled pretty quick. Carl commented that Lesroy was a bit of a poser and agreed to play. Lesroy had taken 2 or 3 Cromer wickets off a short run when Carl came to the crease. He then went to his full run from just in front of the sight screen. The next hour became the talk of cricket in Cromer for years to come. The light was fading and quite a crowd gathered to watch this contest between two giants. Sixes and fours flowed from Carl’s bat to rounds of applause. Eventually he was caught on the boundary for about 60 but no one who was there will ever forget it.
The Word Defiant!
Blickling announces exciting new experience with award-winning theatre company Les Enfants Terribles
Award-winning theatre company Les Enfants Terribles have been commissioned by the National Trust to create a new immersive art installation, that will be unveiled in May and is all set to shine a light on Blickling’s library and the importance of books.
Blickling’s library contains one of the most impressive country house libraries in the care of the National Trust and is one of the most significant in England, with over 12,500 volumes. It is currently undergoing a comprehensive five year conservation programme to ensure its survival, after being plagued by damp and death watch beetle for some years.
The Word Defiant! will be an immersive theatrical experience using sound and theatrical design to enable visitors to explore the importance of books, the threat posed to them around the globe and their shifting role and continued relevance in a changing world. A series of installations around the house and out in the garden Temple will tell the story of books that once held significance but now find themselves superseded by modern technology, those that have been banned, neglected or have become symbolic.
Jo Bosch, the National Trust’s Visitor Experience Manager at Blickling said “We’re really excited to be working with Les Enfants Terribles. We wanted to offer our visitors a creative new way for reflecting on the importance of books and highlight Blickling’s collection that’s in need of our care. The temporary experience, which will run until October, will be designed to be noticed, create debate and prompt important questions. It certainly makes you question what the world would be like without books!” Les Enfants Terribles have won multiple awards and are internationally acclaimed for their ground-breaking immersive work.

I did play against Carl in the President’s game. Beforehand he told me that whatever happened he would not let me get him out and with this he illustrated with a solid forward defensive shot. It so happened that I was given a bowl and Carl came to the wicket. My slow high orbital deliveries would never be a match for him and he promptly hit me for two fours. However he could not contain himself and next ball he hit high to long on and was caught. What happened to his forward defensive shots? I have never let him forget it. “Carl what are you like?” Margaret Barker at that time helped Ann in the kitchen and one of her jobs was to keep clean the toilet near the back door. To do so she would frequently dose it with a liberal quantity of bleach. She was very concerned when Carl went to use the facility that he might splash himself with said bleach. She had visions of a black bottom with white speckles.
Artistic Director of Les Enfants Terribles Oliver Lansley said “We are delighted to be working with the National Trust at Blickling Estate to create these visceral Bespoke Weddings immersive installation pieces which connect Blickling’s renowned library to the stories of book collections and individual volumes around the world. Telling a story is at the heart of everything we do as a company and we are excited to be given the opportunity to tell these relevant and contemporary stories through design in such a historic and significant space.” This project has been made possible by the support of Arts Council England, through Trust New Art, a contemporary arts programme inspired by National Trust places.
The Word Defiant! will be unveiled on 1 May, and will be open daily from 12noon - 5pm until 28 October 2018. Come and see for yourself how this story is brought to life.
Charity Night on the Pier
On 10 March Cromer Pier will host the 6th charity night that Graham Jones has organised and it promises to be an exceptionally good show, which will include local Comedian Pat Nearney.
In all, Graham estimates that some £12,000 has been raised for various charities, including Sheringham Little Theatre Stars Appeal, Help for Heroes, Air Ambulance, and the current beneficiaries Break, The Benjamin Foundation and Playing for Cake. Graham is grateful that the musicians give their time for free and the famous Cromer pier theatre provide a heavily discounted use of the theatre. Graham said “They are a great bunch of people working at the Pier who are so helpful – I particularly appreciate the skills of the technical people.” One unusual entertainer in this year show will be Russian Musician Boris Konoshenko who currently lives in Swafield. He will accompany popular mezzo soprano Maggy Day, a singer who has been influenced by such as Bette Midler, Eva Cassidy and the soulful sounds of Billie Holiday. Boris Konoshenko will also sing a Russian Folk song in English. Ticket are now on sale at the Pier Theatre 01263 512495 – book early for the best seats. There will also be a grand draw organised by Break and Benjamin Foundation and the prizes will include two free tickets to the famous Summer Pier show.
'PLAY ON'
Rehearsals are now well under way for the Sheringham Players spring production which features two one act plays under the title 'Play On'. The production involves some well known and established members of the Players, and a number of new members.
The first play is a bittersweet comedy by Simon Williams entitled 'Happy Birthday Me ' and tells the story of retired actress Margot Buchanan who just wanted "a bottle of Claret and a couple of winners at Sandown" for her birthday. Instead she receives three separate visitors; her ex-husband Leo, an ageing film star fresh from a punch-up with a reporter, Leo's current wife Judy, and his latest mistress Sadie, an aspiring Shakespearian Juliet seeking Margot's acting advice. Just as the inevitable fireworks kick off, Leo suprises everyone ... and then the kissogram shows up ... 'Happy Birthday Me' is a touching and very funny comedy based on the authors earlier full-length play 'Laying the Ghost'.
This play is the directing debut of Imogen Bruce, who also appears in the production as the current Lady Buchanan. The second play, directed by Hazel Randall, is a follow up to the last sell out production of a Grimley play by The Sheringham Players in 2015. 'Last Panto in Little Grimley' by David Tristram features the long overdue sequel to the tremendously popular 'Last Tango in Grimley' and sees Gordon, Margaret, Joyce and Bernard from the Little Grimley Amateur Dramatics Society tackle the Christmas pantomime with predictable hilarious results. The performances are at The Sheringham Little Theatre from Thursday 15 - Saturday 17 March at 7.30pm and tickets are now available from the theatre box office at just £12.

North Norfolk Photographic Society
The standard was as ever very high but North Norfolk Photographic Society came first with 95 out of 100 points. Bishops Stortford were 2nd with 94 points and there was a tie for 3rd place between Wayland, Saffron Walden and Ipswich - all with 92 points.
They just keep winning!
In November, North Norfolk Photographic Society won a competition against nine camera clubs in the Fens. In December they won against two local clubs. But on 20 January, they did it again! This time being the winner out of 36 clubs competing in the Cambridge Digital Interclub competition. The President of the Cambridge Club, Chris Fell, presented the winner’s trophy to North Norfolk chairman, Malcolm English.
North Norfolk Photographic Society held a Club competition on 17 January, judged by Andy Wilson from Bungay.
Trophy presentation by Chris Fell to Malcolm English
The contingent from North Norfolk at The National Judge was David Cambridge, namely Lizzie Wallis, Paul Gibbins. Richards, Malcolm English, Liz Akers and Nick Akers
The competitions were for digital projected images and in fact four competitions, with Novices having one lot for pictures with subject matter ‘Work’ and the other an open section but for monochrome photos. Advanced members had the same groups.
Quality as always was high. Andy Wilson made some very helpful general comments - that if you have a specified subject such as ‘Work’ it’s no good submitting a photo of someone not at work and that ‘Mono’ means mono!
Genesis by Tony Hallsworth
From the Novices, in the Work section, Jackie Ormandy’s ‘Exposed’ showed the interior of an engine ‘cut through‘ to show how it works. Second was a ‘Stone Mason’ at work by Val Dawson and third ‘Anchor Maintenance’ by Barrie Price, which captured a busy gang on Cromer beach, at work on an anchor. The Novices mono competition was won by Barrie Price’s ‘Secret Meeting’ - the interior of a church, all pillars and arches and showing two people in earnest conversation. Second - ‘Low Tide on the Wash‘, a lovely shot of a horse and rider in silhouette against the sun glinting on the beach and sea, by Susie Kemp. Third was ‘No Takers on a Cold Day’ by Heather Green, which showed 2 unoccupied benches in a setting that might be Cromer cliff-top. Then, the Advanced members. In the ‘Work’ section, Andy Wilson awarded joint 1st place to Grace Glaister and Tony Hallsworth. Grace’s picture was a mono picture of an office worker taken through a window from outside, showing piles of paperwork! Tony called his picture of 2 grumpy-looking guys with a chainsaw ’Happy Hour’! Third was awarded to Rob Palethorp’s ‘Pass me the Hammer’.
The Advanced mono competition was won by Tony Hallsworth with a very clever photo of either 5 young ladies (or probably one young lady photographed 5 times) sitting in a V formation and looking at the camera with very few clothes on at all - titled ‘Genesis’. Equal second went to Diana Knight ‘In Safe Hands’ (a charming photo of a soldier complete with uniform and rifle leading a small girl by the hand) and Lizzie Wallis ‘Abandoned Scottish Bothy’ (a landscape picture including a derelict building).
Exposed by Jackie Ormandy
Meetings of the North Norfolk Photographic Society are normally held on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays each month at the Holt Community Centre. For further details please contact the Club Secretary, Judith Wells at secretary.nnps@gmail.com or see the club website at

memorial gardens, to aid with the mourning process, we are maintaining the ethos that the families come first
The building has been sympathetically designed to blend in with the surrounding woodland with the use of local flint stone and natural materials throughout.
Sam Dellbridge continues ‘I would like to personally thank all the families that have put their trust in us to help them say goodbye to a loved one, It is an honour to be able to help at such a difficult time. Every member of staff understands the importance of treating every funeral as if it is a member of their own family. I would also like to thank the Funeral Directors, Clergy, Celebrants and Cromer Town Council for their support throughout the last year and look forward to working with them for many more years to come
The local community has been very supportive of the new crematorium, which offers a bright modern chapel with state of the art music facilities with the option to provide webcasting and DVD recording facilities, together with a Tribute Screen, should these be required, as well as offering the most advanced and efficient cremators available. Sam Dellbridge, Manager of Cromer Crematorium said “From the first day that we opened our chapel to the public, by showing empathy, care and understanding, we are putting the needs of the families first above all else. The support shown has been amazing and goes to show that our service was needed in north Norfolk for a long time. Norwich & Norfolk Campaign For Real Ale Competition has been launched early for the logo for Norwich Beer Festival’s 41st year The annual competition has been launched by CAMRA (Campaign for Real Ale) to find the new logo for the 41st Norwich Beer Festival, taking place from Monday 22 October until Saturday 27 October 2018. The competition has commenced early this year as the Norwich & Norfolk branch will be hosting the Great British Beer Festival Winter (Tuesday 20 February until Saturday 24 February). For more information visit winter.gbbf.org.uk.
The deadline for competition entrants is 9pm Monday 19 February and Norwich & Norfolk CAMRA are looking for innovative designs depicting a dragon of some form. Members and volunteers can feel proud of another successful Norwich Beer Festival in 2017, which marked its 40th year and saw 18,000 visitors. Now the
preparations for the popular annual event can commence for 2018.
Ian Stamp, Chairman, said “We are hoping to receive lots of entries, although they must include a dragon in some form, the entrants can choose a setting or background of their choice. We always look forward to seeing the selection of talented entrants. The logo of the winner will be depicted on the festival glass, programme, and other merchandise”.
As always, the essential element is that a dragon must be included within the design, although abstract is acceptable. Also, a maximum of five colours (four is preferable) can be used, including any black or white parts of the design.

The 13809 Preservation Society based hitherto at the Midland Railway Centre, Butterley have worked hard over the years developing 53809 into a very reliable locomotive. John Moorhouse said “After completing a major overhaul our loco was able to attend the West Somerset Railway Gala celebrating the 50th anniversary of the S&DJR closure in 2016. The members of the Society realised that the time had arrived to accept help with the continued maintenance of 53809. Following two very enjoyable visits to the NNR for their Galas an offer of such help was discussed. This has been developed into, what we hope, will be a long term relationship. The NNR, using their now excellent facilities, will undertake ongoing maintenance assisted as and when possible by the experience gained by the 13809 Preservation Society members during the last 43 years of ownership”. The NNR runs trains regularly between Sheringham and Holt as well as the occasional ‘North Norfolkman’ dining trains to and from Cromer. A full week’s service is available from April through to October and generally at weekends in other months.

Council appoints experienced heritage consultants to help review conservation areas
Purcell appointed to lead conservation area review North Norfolk District Council has appointed heritage consultants Purcell to help in the review of a number of important conservation areas. Purcell are highly experienced heritage consultants and their work with North Norfolk District Council will see conservation areas at Blakeney, Cley-next-the-Sea, Morston, Wiveton and the wider Glaven Valley reviewed. North Norfolk faces increased development pressures, especially within a number of coastal villages, and it is important to undertake a review of these conservation areas to make sure they remain fit for purpose in helping to preserve and enhance the character and appearance of the areas. The work will ensure buildings of heritage significance, as well as key views into and out of the conservation areas, are properly understood and a ppropriate management plans are put in place for their future. This will provide a clearer strategy for these areas and help shape the direction of future development in way that recognises the heritage significance of the area.
role in helping shape the future of these areas and help identify ways to preserve and enhance them for the benefit of all of us.”
Sally Humphries, Senior Heritage Consultant at Purcell, said “We are thrilled at the prospect of working with North Norfolk District Council on this project to assess the significance and characteristics of these conservation areas. We know they are very special to all who live in and visit them. Being locally based, we have a passion for the Norfolk coast and its wonderful heritage assets. We look forward to contributing to the sustainable future of these conservation areas.” Public consultation on the draft Conservation Area Appraisals and Management Plans will take place in July/August 2018 once the initial review work has been undertaken by Purcell.
Cllr Sue Arnold, North Norfolk District Council’s Cabinet Member for Planning, said “North Norfolk District Council is a unique and wonderful place highly valued by residents and visitors alike. It is important that we review our conservation areas and the work to be undertaken by Purcell will play a vital

Stamp duty stamped out for first time buyers Nic Sheldrake, Director, Hayes + Storr
The Budget announced on the 22nd November 2017 brought an immediate change to the initial stamp duty threshold for first time buyers, meaning that anyone buying their first home won’t be liable for stamp duty if the purchase price is below £300,000. For more expensive areas such as London, additional relief is available for purchases up to £500,000.00.
It is predicted that the stamp duty changes will help up to 95% of first time buyers in England, Wales and Northern Ireland and up to 80% in London who are purchasing properties beneath the £300,000 threshold.
First time buyers will need to declare that they have never owned a property, either in the UK or abroad. The declaration will be contained in a Stamp Duty Return form, which can be prepared by a solicitor on your behalf. Hayes +
Choir Needed
Storr will do this at no extra cost. If a property is being purchased by more than one individual, then all parties have to be first time buyers to qualify for the relief.
We at Hayes + Storr welcome the new relief and will be offering a 10% discount throughout the whole of 2018 on our conveyancing legal fees for first time buyers. We are keen to help those wishing to get on the property ladder and will do what we can to make the process easier. We are always available for an initial no obligation chat, and your transaction will be dealt with by a qualified property lawyer specifically allocated to your property purchase.

I lost my 76 year brother just before Christmas. His last years were spent in a care home in London. When I got back to Salthouse where I live I was in my garden watching the seagulls thinking he never had this joy. I wrote a song ‘he never saw the seagulls fly’.
After I finished the song something was telling me that it was crying out for a choir. I would be more than happy to send the song via email in its rough form (just me on the guitar) to anyone who think they could help me. Tom Terry

Bodham and Selbrigg wind turbines – legal challenge
North Norfolk District Council to challenge Planning Inspectorate decision
North Norfolk District Council is challenging the Planning Inspectorate on its decision not to hold a Public Inquiry in the process of re-considering joint planning appeals for wind turbines at Bodham and Selbrigg. In May 2017, the District Council successfully challenged a previous Inspector’s decision to allow the two turbine appeals following a seven day joint Public Inquiry in late 2016.
It was expected that the Planning Inspectorate would hold a new joint Public Inquiry to re-consider the appeals. The District Council are of the opinion that the latest decision of the Inspectorate to carry out the appeals using the written representation process would deny the opportunity to properly scrutinise the proposals in public and properly test the conflicting expert opinions.
It would also deny a local campaign group known as No To That Turbine (NOTTT) from putting their case to the Inspectorate at an Inquiry and would prevent the many local residents from putting their views to the Inspector in person.
Cllr Sue Arnold, North Norfolk District Council’s Cabinet Member for Planning, said “It is important to ensure that significant planning applications which have attracted considerable public interest should be dealt with in a fair and transparent way. The decision not to hold a Public Inquiry will deny the rights of local residents to appear in person at an Inquiry, as they have been able to do previously, and this erodes trust and confidence in any subsequent decision the Inspectorate make. We are taking this action because the Planning Inspectorate do not appear to want to listen to the people of North Norfolk.”
Amelia Courtauld, on behalf of the local campaign group No To That Turbine (NOTTT), said “The local communities affected by the turbine proposals are truly staggered by the decision of the Planning Inspectorate not to hold another Public Inquiry as they did in 2016. This decision flies in the face of local democracy and denies NOTTT and other local residents from putting their views directly to the Inspector in person. This decision has eroded all confidence in the Planning Inspectorate to deal with the proposal in a fair and transparent way. We therefore wholeheartedly support the action taken by North Norfolk District Council in helping ensure the voice of local residents can be properly heard.”
The Council are awaiting a response from the Planning Inspectorate but will continue legal proceedings unless agreement is reached to re-hear the appeals via a Public Inquiry.

Former North Norfolk Police Officer, Graeme Sadd is cycling 10,000 kilometres during 2018 to raise awareness and funds for Combat Stress. Graeme’s aim is to raise £10,000, £1 for every kilometre cycled.
Graeme was born in Norwich and educated at Eaton(CNS) school. Graeme served in the Royal Air Force for 23 years and flew on the E3D Sentry aircraft, based at RAF Waddington Lincoln. During his service he flew as part of the NATO peace keeping force during the Bosnia/Kosovo wars. Graeme retired from the Royal Air Force in 2001 and joined the Norfolk Police force serving in North Norfolk for 8 years.
In 2016 Graeme was diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) relating to his time served in the RAF. Graeme was referred to Combat Stress and received treatment for his mental health issues and is currently learning to live with his illness. As part of the recovery program and to raise awareness for the Combat Stress Charity, Graeme is undertaking this cycling challenge. During the year Graeme plans to participate in several charity long distance cycle rides, including the London Nightride and Tour Du Norfolk

MP presents ‘Flu Hero of the Year’ award to Norfolk surgery receptionist
Jessica Bane, Management Assistant and Receptionist at Ludham and Stalham Green surgeries, was presented her award by Lib Dem MP Norman Lamb on Friday 19 January after winning a national competition to find the UK’s ‘Flu Hero of the Year’.
Ms Bane has managed the Ludham and Stalham Green surgeries’ flu clinics for the last two years. Some of her initiatives include inviting local healthcare organisations and charities such as Age UK and Norfolk Carers Support to host information stands at Ludham and Stalham’s flu clinics, and improving the efficiency of clinician’s flu vaccination data collection system.
The Cromer group, part of a network of more than 110 towns and villages all over Britain, will host the event on 12 – 14 October. Invitations will be sent to representatives from all accredited towns and villages.
Group members are planning a series of talks, walks and other events around town. Among these events, a reception will be held on Cromer Pier, which is owned by North Norfolk District Council and operated by Openwide. And the Council Chamber at North Norfolk District Council will be used for the Walkers are Welcome annual meeting.
Cllr Hilary Cox, a North Norfolk District Councillor and Chairman of Cromer Walkers are Welcome, said “This will be a great opportunity for local accommodation providers, restaurants, pubs, shops and attractions to increase their trade at a time of year when the town is traditionally a little quieter.

Mr Lamb said “It was fantastic to present Jessica with this award. Her dedication to the community is admirable, particularly at a time when flu vaccinations are so crucial. She’s part of a great team at Ludham and Stalham Green surgeries.”
Hannah Coker, Marketing Manager at CFH Docmail Ltd., said:“At CFH Docmail we are all aware of how tremendously hard all the GP practices in the UK work to deliver effective flu vaccination programmes. However every year there are examples of Practice Managers who demonstrate incredible creativity and go above and beyond to drive up vaccination rates and to ensure as few of their patients as possible develop flu and the subsequent complications which result in visits to A&E or time in hospital. We were delighted to launch this award to recognise this outstanding work and to have such a very worthy winner.
We’ll be calling for entries for this year’s award later this month.”

Ms Bane said “I am very proud to have won CFH Docmail Flu Hero of the Year 2017 and privileged to have my award presented by Norman Lamb. I thoroughly enjoy organising the annual flu clinics, introducing innovative ideas each year and increasing our uptake. I am passionate about ensuring that as many patients as possible are vaccinated and protected against the flu and appreciate that my hard work has been recognised.”

crippling illness, which many service personnel who have seen, or been in contact with military conflict, suffer from. And Cllr Nigel Dixon, North Norfolk District Council Cabinet Member for Tourism, said: “Behind Cromer’s Walkers are Welcome accreditation is a lot of hard work from a dedicated team of people.

“Congratulations to them for attracting the annual get together, which will further raise the profile of Cromer as a destination for walkers and provide a welcome boost to the visitor economy away from the high season.
“It is one of North Norfolk District Council’s
aims to support the visitor economy away from the main season so that businesses can benefit from increased activity during an extended season.” Making the decision to bring the annual get together to Cromer, the national Walkers are Welcome committee in Cumbria acknowledged the hard work and achievements of the small but busy Cromer group.
The group has created printed pocket walks, a town food and drink guide, window sticker and discount schemes, town information boards, footpath and signpost monitoring, negotiation with transport companies and liaison with local businesses. The latter of these led to the creation of the Walkers are Welcome beer, made by Poppyland Brewery. The group has also liaised and consulted with Town, District and County Councils. Walkers are Welcome is a non-profit making Community Interest Company. It is a nationwide initiative, launched in 2007 to encourage towns and villages to be ‘welcoming to walkers’.

Numbers attending training for the new Girls team (pictured) on Sunday mornings have been good but newcomers are very welcome - 10am start, just turn up or contact mikestmack@gmail.com.
Two exciting games since the last report. First the Vikings put in a memorable performance at Ruislip scoring ten tries in a 64 -5 victory.
The Youth teams have begun their Cup campaigns with the Under 14s, 15s & 16s winning all their matches to date and the Colts losing at Southwold.
Then came a 15 all draw versus Fullerians at Scottow. The muddy conditions very much suited the Watford side's big pack but the hosts put in an outstanding defensive performance. This game was unfortunately Hal Riley's last before joining Stourbridge, who play two leagues higher.
Ahead of visiting third placed Amersham & Chiltern on the final weekend of January, the Vikings were in fifth place on 51 points, way behind joint leaders Brentwood and Chingford who have 75, but only seven ahead of eighth placed Fullerians.
The Raiders have completed their fixtures in Eastern Counties One (North) finishing second behind Fakenham after winning six of their last seven. This means they now enter the Eastern Counties Shield alongside Fakenham and the two leading sides from the West and South sections.
Broadland Chess Club
We are now officially the 10th largest Chess club in England.
The Norfolk Rapidplay Congress was held on 28 January and we must offer our congratulations to BCC member Trevor Deniss on winning the Peter Burnett Cup. This was obviously a surprise to him, so I will now hand over to him to tell his own story …
“I learned to play chess in 1949 when I acquired a little HBF pocket chess set which I still use for playing through some of the many games by my favourite players from the past. I had this in the same year that Bobby Fisher's sister bought him his first chess set. He was 6 year's old and a little more talented than I was!
I was 11 and had just started my secondary education. I'd never heard of Bobby Fischer and wouldn't know anything about him until I had emerged from my teens. My teenage idol was Mikhail Tal and I played many times through the one book of his collected games which I had and was edited by P H Clarke. I still have it, with all the pencilled ticks that I inserted by the games as I played them many times each. The collected games of Alekhine and Capablanca also suffered the same treatment.
Unfortunately, at about the time when Fisher came on the scene, I started to lose interest in the game. I had played competitive chess for Bishop's Stortford and the Royal Insurance company in London. I also played in Division 3 of the Postal Chess League run by the British Chess Magazine, using a dozen cardboard ‘Portland’ chess sets, which cost about 5/- (25p) each, to keep a record of the games. Each game progressed quite slowly as it was recorded on a special postcard which had to be sent off to opponents for the princely sum of a penny halfpenny (less than 1p in decimal currency) and I remember the excitement I felt as each reply came through the post.
All this came to an end in 1962 when other interests took over, which included Backgammon, and I became runner-up British Backgammon champion when I lost the final

The Vikings are at home this Saturday (3rd) versus South Woodham Ferrers, when the Raiders are also at Scottow playing Shelford 3rd XV in the Shield. The following week the Vikings are at Holt for a Norfolk Cup semi final tie.
