Pigmentation treatments from Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic

Weather with Ned Nimbus

Two of the past three months turned out to be a lot less settled and wetter than predicted but overall 2019 didn’t stray much from predictions with no weather type hanging around for too long plus a few very warm days which we always expect. Rainfall was lower than average but the later stages of the year made up for the shortfall. The next three months will have a mixed pressure pattern but no long periods of one type of weather. March could be the coldest of the three months. There will be mild and cold spells in this mixed pattern but whether they break records remains to be seen. January 18.8, February 19.6 and March 25. Coldest records are January -27.2, February -27.2 and March -22.8. Average temperatures for January, February and March are 7, 8 and 9 respectively Ned Nimbus

A uniform skin tone and texture is desired by many irrespective of their colour and considered a sign of skin health.

Pigmentation can have a number of causes such as excessive sun exposure, genetics, injuries, inflammation or disorders such as melasma.

Melasma is a commonly acquired disorder of hyperpigmentation. Treatment of melasma has been traditionally centered on the use of daily sunscreen and topical bleaching creams or chemical peels.

A careful evaluation and diagnosis of cause of pigmentation is important. Response to treatment can be variable and recurrence very common so some kind of maintenance such as long-term use of sunscreen and lightening agents is often recommended. Most benign pigmentation and pigmented lesions however can be treated very successfully.

at Thorpe Market Church

We can evaluate the location and depth of pigmentation in the skin and this guides what treatments we may recommend. This may include sun protection, skin creams such as lightening creams, vitamin creams and gentle skin peels. Recently a variety of lasers have been used. We have had great results with our lasers but in general 3-5 sessions of treatments are required. These laser treatments are gentle and do not require social downtime. We also use fractional lasers in which case skin may be pink for a few days. Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic is well equipped with multiple lasers and non-laser technology so we can device a customized treatment programme based on your unique characteristics. There are also many innovative gentle treatments such as mesotherapy on offer so why not come and see us and start your journey towards a flawless skin.

Former member of cabaret act, ‘The Brother Lees’ for 45 years, appearing on TV shows from the 70s to the 90s including Generation Game and the Cilla Black Show, Tony Lee is a selftaught artist in original and acrylic paintings. He first applied brush to canvas in 2005, painting mainly landscapes and seascapes. Tony will be exhibiting at Thorpe Market Church at an Art & Craft event on 2 February as part of the annual ‘Snowdrop Sundays’ Also exhibiting with Tony will be Rosemary Fereday who says “I have a love of all things in the natural world and since retirement I have returned to painting mostly in watercolour. I am particularly interested in floral studies in the ‘botanical style’ but recently broadening work into line and wash and including some wildlife images alongside some photography”.

Clapham & Collinge Launch New Year Charity Lasting Power of Attorney Scheme Make it your New Year's Resolution to get your legal affairs in order and plan for the future. Clapham & Collinge Solicitors are offering a 25% discount on Lasting Powers of Attorneys throughout January 2020. We will also make a £40 donation per Lasting Power of Attorney appointment to support 4 Norfolk based charities. Our chosen charities are Age UK Norwich, Keeping Abreast, North Norfolk Community Transport and Cruse Bereavement Care Norwich.

importance of getting your legal documents in place for peace of mind.

What is a Lasting Power of Attorney?

A Lasting Power of Attorney is a legal document that allows you to appoint one or more people (known as 'attorneys') to help you make decisions or to make decisions on your behalf.

This gives you more control over what happens to you if you have an accident or an illness and can't make decisions for yourself (where you 'lack mental capacity') or when you simply want to delegate the role to someone you trust.

Although it is often difficult to think about, it is crucial that we plan for the future and ensure we can manage our financial affairs in the event of an incapacitating illness, accident or injury. Everyone understands the importance of a Will, but Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPA) are a bit more obscure in the public sphere and often people are not aware why they need them. Government research has made it clear that there are dangerous misconceptions about managing your affairs when you lose mental capacity….

There are two types of Lasting Powers of Attorney: • Property & Financial Affairs • Health & Welfare

When can they be used?

Property and Finances – as soon as it has been registered • At the point you no longer have sufficient capacity to make certain decisions yourself or; • While you are still able to make decisions but are physically unable to carry them out or you want someone else to make decisions for you Health and Welfare – can only be used if you cannot make the decision yourself (unconscious or lacking capacity).

• 73% of people think if a couple have a joint bank account and one person can't make decisions for themselves, their partner can legally make decisions for them both. This is untrue. An LPA will however give you consent to access joint funds to pay and monitor financial aspects of a joint account. •72% of people think your next of kin always gets the final say in treatment decisions at hospital, if you can't make them yourself. This is untrue. Medical decisions need the specific, agreed consent of the person involved, before a next of kin can make treatment or welfare choices on someone else's behalf.

Who can be an Attorney?

• A family member • A trusted friend • A professional

(Powerofattorney.campaign.gov.uk, 2019)

What happens if I don't make a Lasting Power of Attorney?

With this scheme we hope to raise awareness about the legal and financial implications of dementia and highlight the

• No one has legal authority to act on your behalf – your spouse and children have no automatic rights to make decisions on your behalf • Someone will need to make an application to the Court of Protection for a Deputyship Order • This can be costly, time consuming and you may not end up being assisted by the person you would have chosen yourself The cost of preparing and registering a Lasting Power of Attorney will depend on whether you wish to have a Property & Financial Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney and/or a Health & Welfare Lasting Power of Attorney prepared and registered.

Captains’ drive to raise funds for cancer charity

New captains at Mundesley Golf Club have teed off a year which will raise funds for a cancer charity close to their hearts. Pat Kerrison and Jenny Smith, both from Stalham, did the traditional ‘drive-in’ to signal the start of their men’s and ladies’ captaincies, joined by senior and junior counterparts John Sewell and Finley Burnett-Kiernan. The captains’ charity for the coming year will be Pancreatic Cancer Research, after Jenny’s husband Derek, also a member of the Club, died from the disease in April 2017. The new captains Jenny Smith, Jenny, said “Losing Derek to pancreatic cancer within five weeks of diagnosis was a terrible Pat Kerrison, John Sewell, and shock. It feels so right to nominate this charity and help find a test for early diagnosis. Pat, 76, who ran a family windows Finley Burnett-Kiernan business, has been playing golf since his mid-20s and was also a member at the Great Yarmouth and Caister Club. He took a break from the sport for five years to compete in triathlons all over the world. Jenny, 66, who followed up a career mainly in sales and marketing by becoming a Thai massage therapist and Reiki Master, joined Mundesley in 2011 with her husband after being instantly ‘hooked’ on a Get Ladies Back to Golf class. She has been helping the resurgent coastal club gain sponsorships. Both captains play off handicaps of 12, though Pat has been as low as six while at Caister, and Jenny’s goal is to play off eight.

New Year’s Day Fireworks

Cromer Pier was once again the backdrop for the town’s annual New Year’s Day Firework Display.

The display by Titanium Fireworks rounded off an afternoon of family entertainment including a fun run organised by North Norfolk Beach Runners and a torchlight procession. Many shops and cafes opened for the day to welcome visitors.

At 5pm crowds waited in anticipation for the fireworks to begin – and once again they didn’t disappoint!

WHY CHOOSE WHY CHOOSE SILVER SILVER & WARD WARD SOLICITORS SOLICITORS in in 2020? 20 20 ?

“It’s a recurrent misconception that a larger firm is better.”

I am Clare Mayell and I own Silver and Ward Solicitors in Sheringham. I am an extremely competent and experienced solicitor. I appreciate that any time of the year can be a difficult time for many people to resolve legal issues of worry and concern, for example, making a will or Lasting Power of Attorney. As I have worked for 2 larger local firms I know what clients want and expect. My charges are significantly less than other solicitors in North Norfolk or Norwich and I provide 24 years of expertise and exceptional service. I pride myself in being one of the only solicitors who offffers a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, so clients can come in and obtain some initial advice and discuss costs and then make an info ormed decision. At a larger firm you just pay more. When a client rings or walks through the door they invariably get to speak to me as this personal and direct approach is important to my clients and I. I ensure complete confidentiality is an absolute priority. I advise new clients to “shop around” as I know that my charges are significantly less than other solicitors but I can offer the same expertise, if not better. I have and can act for clients across Norfolk and the Country as we now have the use of Skype, emails etc. so it enables me to act for clients further afield. The reason that clients, near and far, instruct Silver and Ward is because of my expertise, exceptional service and competitive costs.

“I would say to any potential client with a legal issue or worry in 2020 to come and meet me fa ace to face for a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, as you have nothing to lose but all to gain.

Aylsham Singers’ Victorian Christmas Evening

enhanced by the cast dressed in Victorian costumes and the back-drop of Aylsham Town Hall’s beautiful Christmas lighting.

Use of prompt cards to help the audience with the words for ‘Twelve Days of Christmas’

The Aylsham Singers’ latest production gave an enthusiastic Aylsham Town Hall audience an early taste of Christmas. The concert included a wide variety of songs from the Victorian era including a flute solo of ‘Who Will Buy’ from Oliver (Csonger Papp), ‘Away in a Manger’ (Katie Berritt and Katy Rice), ‘O Holy Night’ (Malcolm Munday) and the whole choir singing ‘Here we come a-wassailing’ and ‘It came upon a midnight clear’ amongst others. The final two songs of the evening included the audience in lively renditions of ‘The Twelve Days of Christmas’ and ‘We Wish You a Merry Christmas’.

Throughout the evening, Julie Reeve provided narration about Victorian times in Aylsham and introduced the audience to several characters who lived and worked in the Market Place in 1871 enthusiastically played by members of the choir. The production was further

Viv Cairns (Musical Director) and Bernie Witcomb (choir member) were pleased by the audience’s reaction - with Bernie commenting “there were months of planning involved in putting on this production. Everyone involved was thrilled and relieved all the effort paid off so well.”

The choir’s next concert is Saturday 16 May 2020. Local singers, able to rehearse on Wednesday evenings, can find out more by visiting www.aylshamsingers.co.uk and/or telephoning 01263 731170.

Mundesley Library Friends Dates for your New Diary

Mundesley Library Friends (MLF) built a reputation last year with a series of well attended and interesting talks at the library. We now have a programme of events for 2020 with talks by some old friends and some new faces - hopefully something to interest everybody.

Funds for each event are split between MLF and the speaker's chosen charity. Why not come along to one (or more) talks for an entertaining evening whilst supporting our library.

Hedgehog Haven

Since Crackers’ (who is doing well) arrival, Charlie, Humbug and little George have come into care. George was found on 30 December at only 250g. He was the last admission of 2019. He had a heavy lungworm burden and is on medication. Due to the lungworm he isn't inclined to eat so, to encourage his appetite, I am syringe feeding him approximately three hourly, which is helping to keep his weight stabilised. In 2019 I attended to 163 hogs here at the hogspital - the rise in numbers hopefully means that more people are becoming Hedgehog Aware and more hedgehogs are being given a second chance for a fulfilling life back in the wild.

The programme is listed below and further details will be available before each event via Mundesley library and council websites, Facebook or posters around the village. Friday 17 January - Chris Brown (Fosters solicitors) gives a light hearted view of his work as a Solicitor Advocate defending cases of murder, manslaughter and serious fraud. He gives examples to show that all is not always as it seems!

Wednesday 19 February - Millicent Chapandra, a Zimbabwean musician and creative cultural artist, will lead a multicultural African music making workshop featuring drumming, singing, dancing, and movement. Come and learn how various African instruments are made, then have a go at playing them.

Friday 24 April - Blickling 1930's guestbook - Bunty Gotts returns with a talk highlighting 4 guests to Blickling at that time - three you will have heard of, one you may not!

Saturday 13 June - Wild Touch childrens' event - come to meet and learn about the animals that Wild Touch have saved.

Friday 4 October - Friends of Horsey Seals - with around 2000 seal pups born each year at this time, the Friends will tell of the work that is involved caring for and protecting these mammals and informing the public who flock to see the spectacle each year.

The Spitfires and Hurricanes are hoping for promotion at the end of the season. There have also been some good performances by Aylsham Gladiators in Division 3 but, in their first season, they are targeting for a mid-table finish.

One for the Veggies!

Whether you have started the year doing Veganuary, or are just trying to have the odd meat free day, this recipe is one you definitely need to have in your repertoire. Even the determined meat eaters want a slice of this loaf once they smell it, as the flavour is so rich and full, and the textures are just gorgeous. This has been a few years in the making, having gone through various changes and adaptations, and is what we served on Christmas Day this year; needless to say, there was none left! Cranberries and roast chestnuts can be purchased in most supermarkets, and although this isn’t the cheapest nut loaf recipe, it is so worth the extra pennies! Miso paste can be bought from all good health food stores, and keeps a long time in the fridge. You can add it to home made soups, as it adds a fabulous umami flavour, and having live cultures in it, is very good for your gut, so an all-round great purchase. Even if you’ve never been tempted by vegetarian food before, give this a go – I promise you will be converted!

Run a little olive oil around a 2lb loaf tin to prevent sticking, and preheat your oven to 180°. Place onion, carrot and garlic in a couple tblsp olive oil in a deep frying pan or wok, and cook gently until getting soft giving the occasional stir, around 10 mins. Add in the lentils and stir well to coat in the oil, and then add in your stock and bring to boil. Simmer for 10 mins, and then add in sage, chestnuts, cranberries and stir in the miso. Continue simmering for a further 10 to 15 mins until most of the water is absorbed and the lentils are soft. Take off the heat and stir in the oats, combining well. Pour mixture into the loaf tin and firm down a little with the back of a large spoon and bake in the oven for 35 – 40 mins, until slightly brown on the top. Run a spatula around the edges to loosen. Leave in tin to cool slightly, and turn out smartly onto a chopping board, knocking the bottom to loosen the loaf. Leave to stand for a further 15 mins to enable easy cutting (I cover with foil and a clean tea towel.) Can be portioned once cold (put in fridge to properly chill before cutting) and frozen in portions for easy roast dinners. Reheat in the foil at the bottom of the oven. Carolyn Burn

New horizons for COAST Arts

Help shape our future at open meeting on Friday 31 January, 10.30am – 12pm at The Belfry Centre for Music & Arts in Overstrand.

COAST Arts, an arts charity based in the Cromer and Sheringham area of North Norfolk, is holding an open meeting about its future on 31 January at The Belfry Centre for Music and Arts in Overstrand. The meeting will take place from 10.30am – 12pm. Amanda Hensby, Secretary of COAST Arts, says “We have some ideas that we’d like to share, and we want to hear your ideas on how we can best support and contribute to a local vibrant arts scene. Everyone is welcome and if you have an interest in any form of visual or performing art, or you have links within the community with any arts group or school, please come along.”

Every October since 2010 COAST Arts has organised an arts festival in and around Cromer and Sheringham as well as supporting and coordinating other arts events throughout the year. Malcolm Birtwell, a trustee of the charity, says: “Over the years we’ve braved the storms and had all hands to the pumps. We’ve cast our nets wide, been fishers of all arts and always made it safely back to port, if a little battered at times. After 10 years we want to do more, so the old ship is

The trustees of COAST Arts are holding this open meeting to gather more ideas for activities and events that can be staged throughout the year as well as during the autumn festival, to increase working in partnership with other groups to enable the charity to broaden its scope, and to recruit more individuals to contribute to COAST Arts’ work. Amanda continues “Our goal is to deliver a varied programme of art, photography, drama, dance and all types of music, through workshops, exhibitions, films, concerts and theatre shows, all year round for local people to enjoy and take part in. Hopefully the meeting will result in input from schools, young people and all those with an interest in art in its broadest sense.”

Injured as a result of unacceptable medical treatment?

Collective heating oil buying combats winter heating blues

– and helps support community projects

Richard Barr, is a highly experienced clinical negligence

With the colder weather of late January and then February on its way, a big worry for many people who live in ‘off-gas’ areas is the cost of heating oil, so a Norfolk charity is encouraging consumers to buy collectively and save money – and help support community projects at the same time. Dereham-based charity Community Action Norfolk runs a collective buying service that helps make buying heating oil less stressful and more manageable. ‘ThinkingFuel’ offers consistently low prices on heating oil by encouraging people to buy as part of a bulk-buy scheme. “Heating oil is an unregulated commodity” explains Community Action Norfolk’s Chief Executive, Jon Clemo. “Unlike mains gas and electricity, there are no rules and regulations or price controls. Oil can be subject to dramatic price fluctuations and you can’t easily buy it in small helpings just when you need it.” Comparing prices for oil is very difficult for the consumer because of fluctuations in price between days, quantities ordered, locations and delivery times. It pays to be part of a collective buying scheme like ThinkingFuel, which are increasingly popular because they offer a fair, flexible and accessible way to buy oil. “Everyone in the scheme gets a really low price on their oil because it’s bought in bulk. All our members pay the same low price per litre no matter how much they order and buying from ThinkingFuel also helps us at CAN support community projects across the county as well as combat fuel poverty in Norfolk.” said Mr Clemo. ThinkingFuel is already well established with three thousand members across Norfolk. The bulk ordering takes place on two key days each month to maximise savings, which is when members can get the best price, but they can order oil on any working day of the month and still get a competitive price. For more information call 01362 698162 or visit www.thinkingfuel.org.uk and to find out more about the work of CAN in supporting community projects visit www.communityactionnorfolk.org.uk

Missing a parent

By Maria Endall, family solicitor, Hayes + Storr When a child loses a parent, through death, divorce or separation, the impact is often significant and long-lasting.

This is bad enough for a child whose loss is owing to the death of a parent, but what if one parent is preventing contact with the other post-separation? No matter how well intended a parent might consider this sort of intervention to be, it has been well researched that the consequences of such actions can have the opposite effect, and cause the child unnecessary suffering and long-term damage.

Not involving yourself in your child’s life, or being prevented from seeing your child by the other parent, can cause feelings of rejection and grief for your child. To make matters worse, the child may feel unable to grieve properly if they have been drawn into conflict. Where one parent prevents the other from having a normal, positive relationship with a child, it is known in family law proceedings as ‘parental alienation’ or ‘intractable hostility’ and is considered extremely damaging to the child and is increasingly being recognised as a form of child abuse. In certain cases where parental alienation is established, the courts will increasingly consider transferring

residency of the child to the alienated parent in order to reunify the child with that important missing link in their life, and address the emotional trauma they have suffered up to that point. The courts aim is to ensure that both children and adults are kept safe, and to enable children to maintain relationships with both parents where it is safe and in the child’s best interests to do so. No matter how parents may feel about one another after a separation, the importance of keeping the child’s well-being as the main focus, cannot be understated. It should be remembered that it is the child’s right to have a positive relationship with both his or her parents, and it is both parents’ responsibility to ensure this happens.

The Cyclist

I went with friends the other night, To a restaurant we know well. We had a lovely dinner there, Then left and said farewell. I got in my car and set off home, It was dark, with no traffic about, Except for a cyclist weaving along, Who rode over a roundabout!

Eventually, he turned off my road, And I watched as he wobbled away. His lights disappeared, I thought he’d gone home, So I carried on my merry way.

When I switched on the news in the morning, The cyclist had been found the next day, Hugging his bike in a ditch by the road, Hungover and in disarray! Frances Wraight
