Clapham & Collinge tackle Dementia Awareness Q&As Dementia currently affects 850,000 people in the UK and it is thought that 225,000 people will develop dementia this year. That’s one every three minutes.

At Clapham & Collinge we play our part in making Norfolk a more welcoming and helpful place for people living with dementia by holding regular dementia awareness sessions and training workshops to help raise awareness, understand what it’s like to live with dementia and help create a dementia friendly community.

With Dementia Action Week 2019 taking place between 20th and 26th May, we have taken the time to answer some of the most frequently asked questions which arise during our training sessions.

Q. What is dementia? Dementia is the term which describes different brain disorders that trigger a loss of brain function, such as memory loss, confusion and problems with speech and understanding. There are numerous conditions which fall under the heading of ‘dementia’ and it is important to know the difference between them as each exhibit different symptoms so will be treated differently. We have highlighted the most common forms of dementia below.

Q. Can someone still make legal documents if they have been diagnosed with dementia?

It is often a concern for someone living with dementia that once they have been diagnosed there are no longer able to make or change their legal documents, however this is incorrect.

As mentioned above, dementia and the severity of it can vary between each person, however provided a person has the mental capacity to make legal documents, they can do so despite having been diagnosed with dementia. It is a principle of the Mental Capacity Act 2005 that a person it not to be treated as unable to make a decision unless all practical steps have been taken to help them to do so.

The legal test for capacity to make a new Will or Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs) is decision specific and applied on a case by case basis. This means that whether an individual has capacity to make a new Will or Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs) will be very much dependant on their personal circumstances at the time of giving the instructions.

As capacity can fluctuate with a condition like dementia, people are said to have good and bad days, so it may be that more than one meeting is needed to determine if the person has the requisite capacity, and it is not uncommon for a solicitor to ask the person’s GP to assist, should they have any concerns.

Q. How can I get involved with Dementia Action Week 2019? Dementia Action Week is an initiative set up by the Alzheimer's Society

which aims to encourage people to take action to improve the lives of those affected by dementia. https://www.alzheimers.org.uk/getinvolved/dementia-action-week. Show your support, volunteer, or support a loved one who volunteering and visit one of the restaurants taking part on Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th May.

Q. How can I learn more about living with dementia or helping a loved one who is living with dementia? At Clapham & Collinge we hold regular dementia awareness sessions and training workshops to help raise awareness and help to create a dementia friendly community. We are part of the Sheringham Dementia Friendly Community and Norwich City Dementia Action Alliance.

All of our lawyers are ‘dementia friends’ and so are experienced, knowledgeable and approachable to advise you the documents you may need if you have been diagnosed with dementia, or can provide you with advice and guidance on steps which may need to be taken if you have been appointed as an attorney for someone living with dementia and are unsure on your role.

For more information on the legal services Clapham & Collinge offer or to book an appointment please contact our dedicated Client Relations Team today on 01692 660230. Appointments available at our North Walsham, Sheringham and Norwich offices.

PICTURES AND SOUNDS QUIZ SUCCESS!

On Saturday 13 April Briston held its second Pictures and Sounds Quiz, and in a packed Copeman Centre the happy crowd pitted their wits against the sound, picture and video questions that came up fast and furious on the big screen, and also an interval game where you had to guess what was in ten sealed bags by feel alone which contained such various items as a printer cartridge, a piece of root ginger, and a pair of handcuffs!

The event was a fund-raiser for the Copeman Centre itself, and at just £5 per head for entry (which included a delicious Jacket Potato Supper, with loads of different fillings, a dessert, and teas and coffees!) after all costs had been taken out, a profit of £273.70 was made for the Centre - but more importantly, it was a fun evening where everyone joined in the spirit of the event, and had a brilliant time!

The next quiz will be on Saturday October 26th and if you would like to come along, why not let us have your telephone number, and we will contact you a few weeks before the event to sort out your tickets - you can do this now by contacting Carol on 01263 860844.

How to restore a youthful jawline?

Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic is fully equipped to help you achieve a tighter jawline and neck.

Sagging jawline is a common concern for many men and women. They do not want major surgery but are looking for some tightening and lifting to make their jawline more defined.

Thanks to modern technology we are able to achieve this in a number of different ways. We can achieve a very pleasing profile with our treatments.

Thanks to modern technology, our treatments, sun-protection and awareness; we find people are maintaining their youthful looks for longer. Our journey begins with a consultation and assessment to determine causes of your particular concern so that a customized treatment plan can be devised. We can usually offer you a choice. Our treatment recommendation may include one or more of the following:

Radiofrequency skin tightening This device can tighten the skin without any pain or discomfort and requires no preparation with numbing creams. It takes about 40-45 minutes to treat the whole face. Patients love this treatment because they are comfortable without pain medication or numbing creams.

This treatment is great for firming up your jawline if you do not have a lot of lose skin. We do have some special offers on this great treatment for you.

Fractional CO2 laser resurfacing Fractional Skin Resurfacing is the only method, which creates new skin. This results in a decrease in sunspots, fine lines, wrinkles and acne scarring and a fresher, more youthful skin tone and texture. The Fractional approach stimulates quick healing, while leaving your skin’s surface intact, with no lasting redness.

Volume restoration We can use dermal fillers or your own fat to re-create your jawline and chin.

Chin and jawline are difficult to inject so you need an experienced doctor to do these and not someone who injects fillers ‘on the side’. When injecting fillers it is important to stay away from the important structures such as nerves and blood vessels. So a deep understanding of anatomy is essential.

When the jaw angle gets blurred, it makes a huge difference in how the person is perceived. We can inject fillers to contour the jawline, angle of the jaw and chin. Botulinum toxin injections remain popular for this area as in Nefertiti lift. As we age, we start to lose a little chin projection. This can be restored using fillers.

This approach differs drastically from simply filling lines because it requires placing fairly substantial amounts of filler on underlying bone while avoiding the blood vessels. This is a challenging technique that can produce beautiful results.

More advanced options We do offer a variety of minimally invasive options such as laser facelift, one stitch facelift or full face and neck lifts under local anaesthesia so we can offer these if you have a significant amount of lose skin and feel surgery is your only option.

Give us a call on 01603 736487 or log on to the website www.coltishallclinic.co.uk to book your appointment and start your journey towards a tighter jawline and neck.

WHY CHOOSE WHY CHOOSE SILVER SILVER & WARD WARD SOLICITORS SOLICITORS in in 2019? 20 19 ?

“It’s a recurrent misconception that a larger firm is better.”

I am Clare Mayell and I own Silver and Ward Solicitors in Sheringham. I am an extremely competent and experienced solicitor. I appreciate that any time of the year can be a difficult time fo or many people to resolve legal issues of worry and concern, for example, making a will or Lasting Power of Attorney. As I have worked for 2 larger local firms I know what clients want and expect. My charges are significantly less than other solicitors in North Norfolk or Norwich and I provide 22 years of expertise and exceptional service. I pride myself in being one of the only solicitors who offffers a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, so clients can come in and obtain some initial advice and discuss costs and then make an informed decision. At a larger firm you just pay more. When a client rings or walks through the door they invariably get to speak to me as this personal and direct approach is important to my clients and I. I ensure complete confidentiality is an absolute priority. I advise new clients to “shop around” as I know that my charges are significantly less than other solicitors but I can offer the same expertise, if not better. I have and can act for clients across Norrffolk and the Country as we now have the use of Skype, emails etc. so it enables me to act for clients further afield. The reason that clients, near and far, instruct Silver and Ward is because of my expertise, exceptional service and competitive costs.

“I would say to any potential client with a legal issue or worry in 2019 to come and meet me face to face for a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, as you have nothing to lose but all to gain.

Home visits can be arranged or appointments outside of office hours including Saturdays. 01263 0 1263 8 823465 23465 or email clare@silverandward.co.uk

‘Wally the Elephant’ celebrated St. George’s Day with Scouts at Beeston Hall School

West Runton Scout Group played host to this year’s St George’s Day Celebration on behalf of North East Norfolk District Scouts, and by kind permission of the School Headmaster, Fred de Falbe the Celebration was held on the Beeston Hall School Sports Field and in a blaze of sunshine proved to be a memorable and 3. enjoyable event for all.

Civic Dignitaries, parents, friends and supporters saw 500 Scout members aged from 6 years onwards - Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Explorers, Adult Leaders and Supporters all assembled at Beeston Regis Holiday Park clifftop field.

West Runton Group formed the District Colour Party this year and led the procession along the cliffs, through Laburnham Caravan Park to the Cromer Road and into the school, their flags displayed by a good breeze which gave maximum colour.

5.

Twelve Scout Groups provided standards for each of their Sections, together with the District’s Explorer Scouts and the parade was admirably supported by Gt Yarmouth Sea Cadets, our guest Marching Band, led by S/Lt (SCC) Lydia Chilvers RNR OiC.

The Celebration Service was opened by the new High Sheriff of Norfolk, Clare, the Lady Agnew of Oulton - born in the windmill at Cley and brought up on the coast in 1. east Norfolk, Lady Agnew said she was delighted to be able to return to the area and in particular to Beeston Hall School where her two children, Madeleine, 23, and Edwin, 19, had

8

| north norfolk post | may 2019

been pupils. Lady Agnew sees her role for the year as supporting charities and their volunteers, and she will be particularly trying 6. to shine good light on smaller charities that need more publicity.

The Celebration Service on the chosen theme of ‘Bones’ was led by District Scout Chaplain, The Rev’d Canon Paul Cubitt - Vicar of North Walsham, Edingthorpe, Worstead and Westwick (Benefice) and Priest-in-Residence at the Parish of Our Lady and St Joseph, Sheringham and Cromer, The Rev. Tim Bugby 2. (Ordinariate of Our Lady of Walsingham).

The gathering was then treated to a very original presentation by West Runton Scout Group members about their village history which began with the Scouts ‘sailing’ by in a crabber (mounted on a trailer)! They then gave a very animated potted history of the palaeontology behind, and discovery of, the fossilized skeleton of a steppe mammoth, found on the beach after a heavy storm in 1990 ... the Scouts named him ‘Wally’!

The audience sang and cheered as the performance unfolded. Scouts, Cubs and Beavers together with their Leaders all 4. renewed their Scout Promises. Following the National Anthem and the presentation by District Commissioner Paul Henriksen of the St George Flag to 1st Hoveton & Wroxham Group as the exemplary Group of the year, the young people and their Leaders paraded back to their starting point.

A very good turnout of guests including the High Sheriff, Lady Agnew, Royal British Legion - Norfolk County Vice Chairman, PE 'Smudge' Smith MBE MCGI, North Norfolk

District Council - Leader, Cllr Sarah Bütikofer, Councillor Richard Shepherd; NEN District Scout President, Richard Butler, MBE, DL, NEN District Scout Vice President, Mrs Betty Jackson, founding member of West Runton Group, John Creasey and other scouting representatives, supporters and friends enjoyed tea and refreshments in Beeston Hall’s dining room.

West Runton Scout Group decided to support Beeston Hall School’s nominated Charity for 2019 and therefore the collection was this year in aid of East Anglian Children’s Hospices (EACH) for their NOOK Appeal.

The Headmaster, Fred de Falbe, said afterwards “It was lovely to be able to welcome so many to our school to share in what is an important community event. My thanks go to District Commissioner, Paul Henrisen and West Runton Group Scout Leader, Helen Cardani for organising this so brilliantly, and also two long-serving members of the Beeston Hall staff, Mike and Angie Cole – Mike has been at Beeston for over 40 years and has served the Scout Group throughout that time. It is a source of particular satisfaction that the bonds between Scouting and Beeston Hall have been so strengthened of late.” Photo 1 Roughton Mill Beavers & Cubs ready to begin the Parade

UPPER SHERINGHAM BELLS WILL BE RINGING OUT AGAIN SOON!

We are delighted to report that the appeal is progressing so well that, if all goes to plan, we will be ringing the bells in time for Remembrance this year, and certainly by Christmas. Remember to listen out for us! We still need to raise the last bit of the money – please do consider helping us with this last push – what better legacy than to be able to say “I helped those bells ring out again”. We are already training new bellringers at nearby St Andrew’s in Holt who will also help with ringing the bells at All Saints Upper Sheringham – but we are always keen to teach new people so if you ever fancied

trying your hand at this ancient art get in touch! It’s nothing like you see on the television – you do not fly through the air, you do not need to be strong, you do not need to be musical or mathematical – you just need a sense of rhythm and a sense of humour! As we start dismantling the fixtures and fittings prior to the bells being taken to the bell works in Dorset, we will have a few items we could sell as mementoes of this project – we will have some clappers, chiming hammers, pulley blocks and an odd selection of handbells in varying conditions. The photo shows an example of a clapper (from a different church, we haven’t removed ours yet) and the actual handbells and pulley blocks and other random items that we are offering. How to donate: If you would like to donate towards giving

our 6 bells their voices back please send your donation to Sue Morton, 4 Linden Grove, Sheringham, NR26 8PD. Cheques payable to “Upper Sheringham PCC”. If you are able to gift aid your donation, please ask me for a gift aid form – 01263 826078 or suejmorton@gmail.com. A big thank you to those who have donated so far – we couldn’t do it without you! This year is the 25th anniversary of the shop being opened as a community business.

take the shop forwards in the years to come. Inevitably fundraising is essential to make these plans reality.

Itteringham Open Gardens and Shop The small village of Itteringham near Aylsham has a hidden gem at the heart of the community.

The Village Shop has been in existence since 1637 providing the locals with goods and services. It was once owned by Lord Walpole’s estate and the freehold was sold off in 1996. At the time, a meeting was held in the village and the decision made to lease the business from private owners so that the shop could continue.

Today it is run by a combination of paid members of staff, a part time postmistress, and lots of volunteers who freely give their time to ensure the shop continues to be a valuable resource for the village and surrounding area.

The shop and cafe are supported by many loyal customers and is a favourite with cyclists and walkers. It has won awards including an East Anglia Countryside Alliance Award. The shop also supports 55 local producers and firms by selling their products.

Having been threatened with closure, the 2017 Save Our Shop campaign concluded with NNDC stepping in to purchase the premises and secure the shop’s future.

The committee that run the shop have a variety of plans regarding how to

To that end, the Itteringham Open Gardens event is taking place on 2 June, from 11am – 5pm, entry to around 10 beautiful gardens is just £5, including a guide map which is available from the Village Hall. As well as viewing the gardens there will be a pop-up ice cream kiosk in the bus shelter, local produce and light refreshments to buy at the Village Hall and teas at the shop’s cafe. All proceeds from the day will go to keeping this little gem open for business!

Quilting Exhibition There will be a Quilting Exhibition and Craft Fayre on Saturday 8 June from 10am - 4.30pm at Cromer Parish Hall.

Proceeds will be for Roughton and District WI and Friends of Cromer Hospital – an item for the new Cancer Unit.

As well as a quilting demonstration there will be wooden toys, wooden toys, cards, fabric and yarns to name a few plus tombola, raffle and teas/coffee and cakes

Aylsham Open Gardens Weekend A record number of private gardens will be open for the public to enjoy in Aylsham over the weekend of 1 and 2 June. Seventeen are open on Saturday and 19 on Sunday.

You will be able to stroll through woodland, gaze into ponds and pools and sit in courtyard gardens. The route also takes you passed the preserved World War Two ‘Pill Box’ at Bure Meadows which is surrounded by a commemorative garden.

As well as planting ideas you can take home inspiration on the use of garden

sculpture, managing a wormery to make fertiliser, novel ideas on disguising bins and growing fruit and vegetables.

When you need a rest sit and enjoy the delicious teas, cakes, ice-cream and light lunches that will be available. There will also be a plant identification competition, free to enter, with a garden voucher worth £20 going to the winner.

The Open Garden event is organised by Aylsham in Bloom. Money raised from ticket sales enables the volunteers to continue funding the Bloom planting around the town. Money raised in the individual gardens from the sale of various items including refreshments, plants and books goes to a charity of the gardener’s choice. This year’s charities include the

Norfolk Heart Trust, Oxfam, Aylsham Methodist Church and the Aylsham Care Trust.

Tickets will be on sale on the open days from 9.30am from the Heritage Centre in St Michael’s churchyard. The cost is £5 for one day and £8 for a weekend ticket. Those aged 16 and under are free. Artists from North Norfolk get set to invite the public into their studios

Hundreds of artists from across the region are preparing to throw open their studio doors to the public as part of Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios 2019.

The event, which has firmly established itself as one of the biggest open studio schemes in the country, will celebrate its 25th anniversary this year. The 16-day celebration of Norfolk’s artistic community runs from Saturday 25 May to Sunday 9 June 2019.

The free event will see more than 430 artists taking part across 250 venues throughout the county - opening their doors to the public to exhibit, sell and talk about their work and practice. In North Norfolk, 75 artists and nine groups will be taking part.

As well as the hundreds of artists taking part, numerous Norfolk schools will be exhibiting in the scheme. Art Trails will also be in place across the county, allowing audiences to visit a number of artists in a particular area, stopping at studios and local attractions along the way.

Artist Shauna Richardson (CATERS)

In North Norfolk five school groups are taking part (Antingham & Southrepps Primary School, Hindringham C of E Primary School, Walsingham C of E Primary School, Kelling C of E Primary School and Blakeney C of E Primary School) and six art trails have been

organised by artists participating in the scheme. These are the Cromer Art Trail, Happisburgh Art Trail, North Walsham to Southrepps Art Trail, The Smallburgh Small Art Trail, Wells-next-theSea Art Trail and 10 artists, 7 locations.

Throughout the duration of Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios many of the artists will be holding additional events, demonstrations and workshops. Artists taking part are working in a diverse range of art forms and techniques including mosaic, ceramics, printing, jewellery, textiles, painting, papercutting, glass work, sculpture and wood turning. Internationally renowned artists as well as artists new to the scheme take part each year.

Alongside the Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios fortnight, North Norfolk artists will be hosting three taster exhibitions at The Old Workshop Gallery, Corpusty (11 May to 9 June), Cromer Library (2 – 30 May) and North Walsham Library (13 May – 10 June).

Ros Dixon, Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios Administrator, said: “It’s wonderful to think that Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios will be in its 25th year in 2019. It goes to show that the scheme has a timeless appeal for both artists and visitors.

“It’s not just about buying and selling work directly from the artist, which of course is one of the appeals, but it also offers artists the chance to meet and talk with people who are interested in their work.

“Many artists also enjoy being able to meet and work with other artists, which for some has resulted in longterm collaborations and friend-

ships. Being able to see artists at work in unique working spaces will continue to fascinate and appeal to people, whether the artist has Robert Downie work in been taking progress part in Open Studios for 25 years or whether it’s their first time.”

Studios are free to visit and all details, including studio opening days, directions, art trails and additional events and demonstrations, can be found in the Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios brochure and on the scheme’s website.

North Norfolk artist Robert Downie said: “I really look forward to Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios, as over the fortnight I have this once-a-year opportunity to meet with lots of old friends together with new visitors to my studio. It can be hectic but is always stimulating. I learn so much from just listening and chatting to visitors, it plays a significant role in inspiring the future direction of my work.” Brochures can be picked up from Tourist Information Centres, libraries, cafes and various art venues across Norfolk.

Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios 2019 will take place between Saturday 25 May and Sunday 9 June 2019. For more information please visit www.nnopenstudios.org.uk

ARTISTS GET READY FOR OPEN STUDIOS AND ART EXHIBITION

Preparations are well underway for the annual Open Studios event at Barrington Farm day service centre at Walcott.

Barry Skinner, 44, attends the centre’s supported Art Barn studio every week and is looking forward to welcoming visitors to the space and showing his work.

“I’m happy to exhibit my work. I like to draw scenery and famous faces like Toyah and Bjork. I have autism. I taught myself how to draw and bring my own ideas. People should

come here for Open Studios – it will do you the world of good and you might find something really interesting!”

Staff member Sarah Ballard says “Open Studios is a fantastic opportunity for local people to visit to this unique art centre. There are very few places like it in the UK. We don’t expect visitors to buy anything (though it’s great if they do!) – it is more about people seeing how each individual makes their art in this shared space and engaging with the artists. Barry is one of 30 artists here who work hard all year but also face challenges in exhibiting their work. Open Studios also allows us to create an accessible exhibition outside of a traditional gallery environment and gives everyone an equal platform to show their work and celebrate their achievements. Please don’t miss your chance to come and support these brilliant artists – everyone is welcome.”

The exhibition will feature drawings, paintings textiles and sculpture with prices for all budgets. There is also a special event this year called the Happy Cafe. This will take place on Wednesday 29, Thursday 30 May, Wednesday 5 and Thursday 6 June from 2pm - 4pm and offers the public the chance to have a fun and informal cuppa and homemade cake with the artists.

The Art Barn studio at Barrington Farm will be open 10am - 5pm every day from Tuesday 28 May until Sunday 9 June. It is No 092 in the brochure. Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios, run by the N&N Festival is one of the largest schemes in the country with over 450 artists taking part. Breaking the impasse... resolving conflict using mediation techniques Amanda Nudds, Solicitor & Mediator, Hayes + Storr

The seemingly interminable failure of MPs to agree Britain’s withdrawal agreement from the EU is typical of many intractable disputes. At some point in our lives, most of us will find ourselves at odds with someone over something. Each person will have their own ideas about what’s right (usually based on what’s most important to them) but that can result in both parties being totally unable to agree an outcome – and a stalemate ensues.

Breaking that impasse can seem difficult, if not impossible. And that’s where mediation comes in. A form of dispute resolution used to prevent (or conclude) court proceedings. Here are ten useful techniques used in mediation to help find a settlement:

1. PARTICIPATION It’s important that both parties are willing to engage in the process, can put forward proposals as well as consider any proposals received.

2. EVIDENCE Both parties must be upfront and make available all key documentary evidence – so each side can understand the other’s position.

3. STATE YOUR POSITION Make your position clear at the outset, as it may be that one party has misinterpreted the other’s position. Explain what you believe to be right and what you hope

to achieve.

4. WORK TOWARDS A SETTLEMENT Initially, each party’s aim will be to win, but it’s important to realise that resolution isn’t going to be a ‘win’ for one and a ‘loss’ for another – it will be a compromise that enables both parties to move on.

5. BE RESPECTFUL Whatever your feelings, it’s important to treat the other party with respect. Being insulting only creates more barriers and makes it more difficult for any resolution to be achieved.

6. BE PERSUASIVE Highlight the merits of your position so the other party can see that their point of view may not be as strong as they originally believed. This can also bring the other party’s attention to the mutual benefits of a deal.

7. INTERESTS Identifying the other party’s interests can be difficult – but once you’ve asked questions and gleaned more information on what they want to achieve, you’ll have a much better understanding of what can be done.

8. BRAINSTORMING Neither party is going to leave with a settlement that includes everything they want. Explore and identify options which will satisfy

both parties.

9. EMOTION Although all conflict gives rise to anger and frustration, it’s important to keep your emotions in check so you are able to think clearly and practically.

10. PATIENCE A fully-informed overview can take time before a final settlement is reached, so try and remain patient – it will pay off eventually!

If you’re currently locked in a dispute and would like to find a way out, call Hayes + Storr on 01328 863231 and ask to speak to Amanda Nudds. If you require advice on any other legal matter call 01328 863231 or email law@hayes-storr.com.

RESIN DRIVE HELL FOR ELDERLY WELLS RESIDENT

An elderly Wells-next-the-Sea resident has been left severely out of pocket, after a two-year saga relating to the unsatisfactory installation of her resin-paving driveway. Mrs Small who had the works completed by ‘New Look’, has been in contact with local MP Norman Lamb relating to this incredibly distressing matter.

Mrs Small had the works completed two and a half years ago, the total cost was £7500. She expected, as was outlined when quotes were made to her, that New Look were certified installers of resin-paving and their work was of such a high standard, that a guarantee was attached to completed projects.

Once the installation was complete, it was clear to Mrs Small that it was substantially faulty. Despite strenuous efforts made by Mrs Small to arrange a visit from a representative of the company who installed it, to seek compensation, or a way to fix her drive no one from the company

has visited.

Mrs Small complains of weeds constantly growing through the surface of her drive as well as moss and black algae, which she was assured and it was made clear in advertisements from the company – would not happen. The surface is also discoloured in part and you can see paving slabs underneath it on the paths. Mrs Small has also been told by other providers of resin paving that her drive has been laid far too thinly.

It is now clear to her that there is no way to repair the damage, rather it would be necessary for the whole drive to be broken up and re-laid. The cost of this is and the disruption it would cause is something Ms Small is unable to face at present.

Two months after work to Mrs Small’s drive was completed New Look changed its name to ‘Resin Pave’. The new company has the same director.

Advertisements from said continue to appear in the EDP claiming ‘Resin Pave’ are approved installers - in her conversations with the providers of resin pave, Mrs Small has been told that they are not.

Local MP Norman Lamb said “I have has been in contact with my constituent Anne Small for a long time now – and this ongoing saga has taken a heavy toll on her. I am acutely aware that my constituent lives on her own and has lost her husband recently, this is all incredibly stressful and distressing for her.

I am calling on the company that installed her drive to adhere to the guarantee that was made when they were contracted to do the works and ensure that Ms Small’s drive is fit for purpose, as it should be.

I am hopeful that this matter can be brought to an end very quickly, in order for my constituent to be able to get on.”

Evan’s crab

What do you get when you mix a fast bowler with a two Rosette restaurant…?

good to see a friendly face whenever ET and Kerrie came in for dinner.

Well, this summer you could end up with a delicious ginger, coriander and chilli crab dish, courtesy of an old friendship and the local cricket club…

As a fearsome paceman for Cromer and Norfolk CC, Evan Tuck was already a good friend of the Graveling family, and when the Grove opened its restaurant in 2012 Evan and his wife Kerrie were one of the first couples to visit.

“Those first couple of years were quite an experience,” remembers Richard Graveling, a former teammate of Evan’s at Cromer, “so it was always

“ET is a great chef himself and, after tasting his crab, I thought that it had to go onto the summer menu (with some beautiful finishing touches from our head chef Reis Khalil).”

“It’s a lovely recipe from the (now extinct) Red Lion in Upper Sheringham,” says Evan. “I’ve added some coriander, cheese and chillies, experimented lots to get the flavours just right, and I’m now really happy with it.

“I love cooking just as much as I used to enjoy knocking over opposition batsmen for Cromer and I’m chuffed to see one of my home efforts on the menu!”

To book your table call 01263512412 or visit thegrovecromer.co.uk

For one crab:

One teaspoon finely chopped ginger. One teaspoon olive oil. One teaspoon finely chopped coriander. Dash of salt and pepper. One tablespoon single cream.

Mix with fork loosely. Return crab to cleaned shell and smooth into space. Grate Norfolk Mardler cheese; enough to cover the crab. Finely chop half a mild chilli and shake with cheese. Cover crab. Bake on 180c for 10 mins, checking cheese has melted.

RAF Radar Museum has become yesterday’s news… wrapping chips! In a novel marketing ploy, the RAF Radar museum has produced its own newspaper so that fish and chips can we wrapped up in it.

In collaboration with Ken’s Fish and Chip shop in Wroxham in the Broads, the museum is providing the printed newsprint wrappers for the takeaway service.

The newspaper includes a range of museum news and carries a voucher for a £1 off admission for visitors bringing the voucher with them to the museum.

Museum marketing manager Greg Hayman said “We were looking for interesting ways to connect with potential visitors and we thought we would try this idea to combine great eating with a sense of nostalgia for how chips were wrapped in yesteryear.

“If it proves popular we hope to extend it throughout the season and maybe to chip shops in other towns. We like to think that we are making news and this way we are, quite literally!”

Chip shop manager Michael said “We thought this was a great idea and offers our customers something a bit different and we are teaming up with a great local visitor attraction so it’s

20

| north norfolk post | may 2019

a win win for us both!”

The ‘newspaper’ chip paper has been designed and printed by Century Printers in Stalham.

In other news, the Radar Museum is celebrating because it has become the number 1 visitor attraction in according to TripAdvisor.

Greg Hayman continued “Following its most successful year ever, the RAF Radar Museum has opened for the 2019 season with an air of celebration as it has recently taken over the top spot as the best local visitor attraction according to those that know - the people who visit it. We couldn’t wish for a better start to the year!”

Despite being a top visitor attraction, it has not always been well known as the museum sits on the site of one of our most Top Secret military bases and didn't even appear on a map until recently. That all changed when the Cold War ended and part of the base became a museum.

The museum is a great place to visit for a day out in Norfolk and is fun for all the family. There are over 20 exhibition rooms as well as outdoor exhibits. Plus, there are 3 free presentations running throughout the day, one in the WWII Operations

Room and one in the Cold War Operations Room and one on the Bloodhound surface to air missile system. You can relive the experience of RAF staff who monitored the skies keeping us safe during the war and during the threat of nuclear war with the Soviet Union.

Brewery launch ale which is set to fly

A Norfolk brewery is set to launch a new beer to celebrate a milestone for one of the UK’s most dynamic aerobatic display teams.

Wildcraft Brewery, based in Buxton, is hoping their Wildcat beer will fly off the shelves thanks to their collaboration with Wildcat Aerobatics, who mark ten years together as a team in 2019.

The Norfolk-based team, who fly a pair of Pitts Special biplanes, display throughout the UK and Europe.

Over the past few months Wildcraft Brewery and Wildcat Aerobatics have been working together to produce a very drinkable pale ale at 4%. Made using Chinook and First Gold hops the beer is smooth with traditional bittering and a hint of orange on the nose.

Mike Deal from Wildcraft Brewery said “Wildcraft has always been about community, collaboration and exciting new adventures that may not normally be seen in the brewing world.

“With this in mind, we were so excited when Wildcat Aerobatics contacted us about a collaboration. After only a couple of meetings, friendships were

formed, and the beer and competition were born.”

Ahead of the launch of the Wildcat beer, Wildcraft Brewery will unveil their Brewery’s Egg Hunt competition. Promotional beermats will be scattered throughout pubs in Norfolk, complete with interactive Snapchat codes. People are tasked with collecting a set of six different competition beermats to be in with a chance of winning a flight with Wildcat Aerobatics as well as beers, brewery tours and WildFest tickets.

Wildcraft Brewery, run by Mike Deal and Mark Goodman, launched its first craft beer in November 2016 and have since created more than 15 different brews and pride themselves on using as many foraged ingredients in their ale as possible.

Willie Cruickshank from Wildcat Aerobatics said “It’s been really exciting to work with Wildcraft to develop the Wildcat beer and I’m delighted with the delicious IPA we’ve created together.

“It’s smooth, effervescent and wellrounded with just a hint of fruitiness. A glass or two of chilled Wildcat IPA is going to be the perfect way to top off a day of hardcore aerobatic display flying in what’s shaping up to be a busy summer for Wildcat Aerobatics.

Bacton Sandscaping Project

North Norfolk District Council can confirm that works have been completed to remove a significant amount of protective material from Bacton cliffs over the past week.

A minimum coverage of protection will remain temporarily on the lower levels of the cliff to ensure the successful delivery of the Bacton to Walcott Sandscaping project and to ensure that sand martins are not disturbed while the works take place.

The project, five years in project development since the devastating coastal tidal surges and subsequent floods of 2013 and 2017, will help to protect hundreds of people’s homes, local businesses and nationally important infrastructure for many years to come.

Monitoring will continue to take place three times a day, with further advice and surveys by the site team and ecologists.

This decision has been reached following further discussions with the RSPB and Natural England.

Brewery has also enabled us to provide fans of this artisan beer the chance to enter a unique competition to win a flight with us and experience the "Wild" G-Forces of aerobatic flight for themselves.”

Al Coutts of Wildcat Aerobatics said: “It’s quite an honour to have a brewer of Wildcraft’s calibre create an ale for us to help us celebrate ten years since the foundation of our team. Having sampled the beer, I’m sure it will go down a storm!”

The beer will officially be launched on cask at Norwich City of Ale on 23 May. You can sample the beer and watch Wildcat Aerobatics at the same time on Saturday June 1 when the team plans to display at Wildcraft Brewery’s WildFest event in Buxton.

Dear Margaret, I work for a charity (Change, Grow, Live) which delivers the Norfolk Independent Visitors Service and we are desperate to recruit committed and passionate volunteers who would like to spend a day a month with a young person in care.

The children and young people we work with have suffered abuse, neglect and often both; they often mistrust adults and need positive role models to show them that relationships can be trusting, healthy and positive. The role of an Independent Visitor can be immensely rewarding and fun - taking a child or teenager out once a month to have fun together by engaging in community activities or visiting places of interest.

Minimum age for volunteer applicants is 21 and minimum commitment is for 2 years, once a month. Full training and support is provided, plus reimbursement of reasonable expenses.

News from Broadland Chess

Well just this week I have returned from a fortnight in warmer climes. I have accompanied my chess playing other half to a tournament in the beautiful island of Rhodes, so there are advantages of being a chess widow. Roy Hughes was playing in the European Seniors World Championship, with a list of competitors including several Grand and International Masters from all corners of Europe. I have attached a couple of pics of the event. Although Roy was not one of the medal winners he did receive a grading prize for the best performance by an English player, presented by Stewart Reuben from the English Chess Federation.

So moving on from one of our senior members of the club we now turn our attention to the Juniors who continue to

show great skill and promise in all age groups.

In the Norwich Junior Congress Broadland's most successful players were, in the Challengers section 1st Benjie Perry and 4th= Jay Ambadkar and Benedict Ward, in the Intermediate section 2nd George Hall and 3rd= Joshua Dawson and in the Novice section 5th= Ruby Perry. This was the largest section with 29 entrants.

The u-11 section of the UK Chess Challenge has finished at the club. The winner was Jacob Davison with 8/8. All of the following have qualified for the Megafinal which will take place in Norwich in early May: Benjie Perry (u-11), Jacob Davison (u-10), George Hall (u-10), Danny Dawson (u-8), Ruby Perry (u-8) and George Artherton (u-7). Congratulations to all of our young members.

Broadland Chess Club meets at the Kings Head on Monday and Wednesday nights at 7.30pm, the Juniors at 6.30pm on a Monday. Visitors and new members are welcome to come along, we also offer coaching sessions to those who are keen but less experienced. For more information please see our facebook/twitter pages or our website.

Hedgehog Haven

Stan (pictured) is the newest arrival.

Out during the day, he was found by a dog walker just around the corner from where I live so his finder ran to find me.

He's a small hog just 270grms. Another one who has probably been struggling through the winter, he is slowly gaining weight, but will be quite some time before he is big enough to release.

To coincide with Hedgehog Awareness week, North Walsham Garden Centre are having a Hedgehog Day on Saturday 11 May between 10am and 3pm. Hodomodes Hedgehog Support will be there with an all things hedgehog stall, I will be in attendance with information leaflets, a tombola and, all being well, a hedgehog.

Row, Row, Row your Boat

that quarter for the proposed duration of the row over the Easter weekend, that it would not be possible to complete the row in the allotted time. In December 2020 a trio of intrepid rowers will embark on the longest and toughest row of their lives (to date). They are Sandra Squire, Helen Hogan and Kate Palmer, all members of the Kings Lynn Coastal Rowing Club who will be taking part in the Talisker Atlantic Challenge (www.taliskerwhiskyatlanticchallenge.com).

In order to take part in this mammoth event a serious amount of training will be necessary. To this end the trio ably assisted by Carol Noding, Tim Hogan, Bob Panrucker, Karen Nicklin and photographer Pete Jousiffe set out on Saturday 20 April, in their St Ayles Skiff, the ‘Lynn Rewet’ to row from Kings Lynn and visit all the lifeboat stations along the coast as far as Great Yarmouth, presenting Easter Eggs to all the stations along the way.

As you will appreciate, all coastal rowing is governed by the winds and the tides and timing is therefore of the essence. The team was seriously hampered at the outset by a 45 minute delay with the arrival into The Great Ouse of a container ship. This put their timing all awry which meant that they arrived at Old Hunstanton later than planned and as the tide was on the turn. As they departed from Old Hunstanton they were met with the incoming tide and an easterly wind of about 15- 20 knots and, as they were not making any headway, it was decreed that, with the wind being from

However, the KLCRC members were determined not to disappoint the RNLI stations they had planned to visit and took it upon themselves to journey by road to all the Lifeboat Stations between Hunstanton and Great Yarmouth to deliver their Easter wishes and chocolates aplenty. The crew were obviously very disappointed not to complete the journey but were very grateful for the input from the RNLI, especially Hunstanton RNLI and Skipper Sandra Squire said “Throughout the next 3 days, we continued to visit all of Norfolk’s lifeboat stations on schedule. We have spent a great deal of time talking to the crews, learning about their stations and the work they do and of course, delivering Easter Eggs to them! What has come from this weekend, is a deeper understanding of the work each station undertakes, how invaluable it is and how much support it requires to keep those stations open. We are completely in awe of the fabulous lifeboat crews at all of the stations and are now working on plans to get them involved with some rows around the coast.” We at Sheringham RNLI are very grateful for their best wishes and gifts and wish them well in their endeavours to row across the Atlantic Ocean in December next year.
