Dear Margaret
Whilst I do not wish to alarm anyone, I want to warn readers of a scam currently targeting the area.
We have knowledge of two incidents where elderly individuals have been targeted by phone, by a call centre in which the caller states that they have reason to believe that there is a problem with their internet or email service. The caller then states that their "firm" can fix the problem on their computer for a fee and asks for bank details and their internet access codes.
These people are convincing and very persistent. As many people, especially of an older age group, are not always confident with new technology this request can seem compelling; especially when they are in their own home and feeling safe and off guard. It is extremely unlikely that any reputable email/ internet service provider would ever cold call a customer in this
01692 402019
way and clearly if you had a problem with your email or internet service it would be more likely that you would bring it to your service provider's attention than the other way around.
If this happens we would strongly suggest that you put the phone down, without giving any details then refer the matter to Norfolk Police. If you have given details and have been targeted in this way then I would suggest that you contact Norfolk Police for advice as to what to do next. COMPETITION INSIDE THIS ISSUE!

Thai King Prawn Green Curry with Sticky Jasmine Rice and Asian Style Vegetables from Head Chef at The Grove, Gary Parrett 50g fresh coriander 3 pulped cloves of garlic 100g of peeled raw tiger prawns (half and remove the tube through the body) 50g sliced Chinese cabbage, either from the supermarket, or ask Andrew or Lisa at the Cromer Farm and Health Shop ½ finely sliced red onion 2 peeled and finely sliced carrots 1 finely sliced courgette halved Jasmine rice as you require
This is a fantastic Thai curry passed down to me from a previous head chef who had lots of experience with Asian foods, and it’s stayed with me ever since. It’s the perfect time of year for curries generally, and this one is a real winter warmer – in fact one of the owners here calls it ‘The Suffolk’ because it’s slightly thicker than normal… (!)
As we keep one eye on a couple of big occasions coming up here at the Grove – Mother’s Day and Easter – we’re continuing to run our over 50s lunchtime special – two courses plus coffee off the specials board for just £10 – so do pop in and see us Wednesday through to Saturday. And don’t forget our amazing Sunday lunch too!
*Thai green curry paste - try to use mae ploy, but if that’s not available Blue Dragon is also ok – just double the weight as it’s not as strong. Alternatively there’s a good recipe online that I’ve used before: www.kitchenbutterfly.com/ how-to/make-thai-green-curry-paste/ - all the ingredients can be found at the Cromer Farm and Health shop on Tucker Street.
The delicate blend of flavours give my Thai King Prawn Green Curry a starring role on our upcoming Valentines menu – details at eatatthegrovecromer.co.uk.
Ingredients: 50g Thai green curry paste or more for extra heat* 4 tins of full fat coconut milk 15g lemon grass 15g finely sliced fresh ginger 1 lemon (zest and juice) 2 limes (zest and juice)

Method: 1. Empty the contents of the coconut milk into a saucepan and gently simmer. 2. Into this add your sliced ginger, chopped lemongrass, citrus zest and juice, garlic and your curry paste. Reduce the mixture until it has thickened slightly, remove from the

STAYING ALIVE...
As part of their Paston Sixth Form College Enrichment Challenge, 32 students completed a St John Ambulance course in Essential First Aid. The students now know how to deal with emergencies safely, from accidents involving broken bones and burns, to heart attacks, choking and unconsciousness. Students demonstrated their skills in recognising a range of conditions and treating the casualties, including bandaging, mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and heart massage… this often accompanied by rather off-key renditions of the Bee Gees ‘Staying Alive’ or ‘Row, row, row your boat…’! Students were presented with their certificates by Kevin Grieve, Principal.

heat and strain back into the saucepan. 3. In a separate pan boil the rice until the water has disappeared, then drain - the texture should be fluffy and sticky. 4. Place the curry sauce on a medium to low heat and add your vegetables; these need to be crunchy in texture so only a few minutes cooking in the sauce is needed. 5. Once your vegetables are done add your halved peeled prawns and chopped coriander. The prawns will only need a about a minute as they will be delicate after halving.

Students commented that they really enjoyed the three hour session, ‘I loved being covered in bandages’ and ‘it was really friendly even though you didn’t know everybody at the start’. Several students commented that they felt more prepared for going to university and living independently, ‘you never know when you’re going to need it’. North Walsham Times 416 February 16th 2013

Henry Blogg Museum calls for straw donkey The RNLI Henry Blogg Museum in Cromer is searching for a straw donkey, and other special souvenirs, to feature in an exciting new exhibition.
On Saturday 23 February members of the public are invited to visit the museum bringing with them a souvenir that holds a memory.
Chosen souvenirs will then have the chance to be displayed in a forthcoming exhibition. Keepsakes, Key Rings and Kiss Me Quick!: A History of Souvenirs will run from the 29 March to the 14 April 2013 at the museum. Looking at the history of souvenirs, including items salvaged from shipwrecks and RNLI memorabilia, the exhibition will explore what makes objects special to us. People have always collected keepsakes as reminders of special events, holidays, moments in history, places or people and this will be reflected upon within the display.
The exhibition will feature items from the museum's own collection including an emotive tile salvaged from the Sepoy. This memento commemorates Henry Blogg's rescue of
the two crew members from the barge in December 1933. Hand painted to depict the scene the tile shows a desire to remember and commemorate the event.
Also on display will be a photograph of three elegant Edwardian women riding donkeys at Lowestoft. This souvenir shows a more light-hearted recording of events. Taken exactly 100 years ago, the image was preserved in a photograph album belonging to Joyce Taylor, which was later donated to the Henry Blogg Museum by her son and also includes images of Cromer lifeboats.
The museum is hoping that visitors will bring a range of souvenirs on the 23 February ranging
North Walsham Times 416 February 16th 2013
from Mexican sombreros to RNLI memorabilia and, of course, the elusive straw donkey. Whatever the souvenir this is a fantastic opportunity for the public to see their own objects on display and tell their stories.
Jacqui Palmer, Museum Manager said: ‘I hope that many interesting souvenirs are shown on the day, especially ones related to the RNLI, and I look forward to seeing some become part of our exciting Easter exhibition.’
Exhibitions Assistant Rebecca Fletcher said: ‘I am eager to see the mix of items that the public will bring to the museum and am particularly interested to hear the fascinating and varied stories behind them. We obviously want to find that straw donkey!’

North Walsham Times Expands
The North Walsham Times will continue to deliver 5800 copies through the letter boxes of residents in the town through 2013. However, we have been asked to expand our coverage into surrounding villages as well to enable those not on one of our regular rounds to collect their copy from convenient locations.
We will now have a circulation of 6,600. The pick-up points so far arranged are listed below - there are more to be agreed which we will list next month. The other two magazines in the Rose Villa Publications group - the Cromer Times and Sheringham Independent will also be increasing the number of copies printed - Cromer will rise to 6000 in total and Sheringham to 5600. They will be covering locations such as Mundesley, the Runtons, Holt and Bodham as well as Aylmerton and Alby, which do not have a letterbox round. We do not know how many readers we have, but what we do know is that most people in North Walsham like to read our magazine.
We hope that in the coming year we will be able to continue to make our magazines the most read in North Norfolk. Crab & Lobster Festival 2013 is launched Nip along to North Norfolk
This May Cromer and Sheringham will host the fourth Crab & Lobster Festival – a feast of fun, food, art, music, heritage and entertainment – and there are more opportunities than ever to get involved.
A full and varied programme will take place across the Festival weekend 17-19 May. On Thursday 24 January an evening of lifebuoys, film and seafood launched the 2013 Festival.
The Crab & Lobster Festival will kick off the coming holiday season with an Opening Concert on at Cromer Pier’s Pavilion Theatre on Friday 17 May. Hosted by the ever-popular Olly Day the concert will feature music by the renowned Sheringham Shantymen, internationally-respected singer John Conolly and comedy by Nigel ‘Boy’ Sayer. This will be a show for everyone who enjoys the seaside tradition of Sea Shanties, folk and irresistible humour. Tickets for this concert are now on sale via the Pavilion Theatre box office on 01263 512495 at only £5 each.
The Festival weekend continues in Cromer on Saturday 18 May and in Sheringham on Sunday 19 May with a programme which promises a feast of superb seafood, scintillating street entertainment, music, comedy, film, seafood competitions, the World Pier Crabbing Championships and the return of the Festival’s art trail.
In 2013 the Festival will concentrate on highlighting the local seafaring heritage of Cromer and Sheringham through live demonstrations of fishing crafts where audiences can also ‘have a go’, crab dressing competitions as well as cookery demonstrations from local and national chefs and fish specialists.
This week the Festival launched a range of ways in which local businesses, schools, community groups and individuals can get involved with this year’s celebrations. Central to this is the Lifebuoy Art Trail which will run in the same spirit as the decorated windbreaks in 2012. For the sum of £50 or £60 sponsors will be supplied with a 24” or 30” primed, plastic lifebuoy to decorate and display as part of the Festival’s Art Trail which will run from Easter until August 2013. At the end of the trail all the windbreaks will go into the Grand Windbreak Auction on Sunday 25 August. The first 100 lifebuoys are now available to sponsor. Alongside the Lifebuoy Art Trail the Festival is encouraging artists, designers and creative’s of all ages and abilities to enter their second Poster Design Competition where one lucky winner will see their design
turned into 2013s official Festival poster. Details of the competition can be found on the Festival website, the deadline is Friday 1 March.
The Festival would like to see as many people as possible getting involved. Chairman Tony Shipp said “We are delighted to start the year on such a positive note. We hope the Lifebuoy Art Trail will be as successful as the windbreaks, it’s a great way for visitors to explore the area and see what North Norfolk has to offer.” He added “we are also running the Festival’s Poster Design Competition where people can design the Festival’s official poster for 2013, entries are already coming in”.
With over 40 events and an expanded street theatre programme this year’s festival offers an abundance of fun for all the family across the week
Festival secretary Kate Royall said “In 2012 the Festival achieved enormous successes. Over 20,000 people enjoyed the Festival weekend, thousands followed the art trail and hundreds of people entered the poster design competition and we hope this year’s Festival, with an expanded programme of free events, will achieve the same success and bring more people to this fabulous area”.
For more information on the Lifebuoys, Poster Design Competition, volunteering with the Festival and many other opportunities please see the website www.crabandlobsterfestival.co.uk or call 07775 337201.
Keeping the vulnerable warm and well
Following the announcement that Norfolk has again successfully bid for extra funding from central Government to help the vulnerable this winter, North Norfolk District Council has begun distributing 300 Winter Warmth packs to residents across the District.
Deaths due to cold weather increase by almost 20% during the winter months. Many of these deaths can be prevented if those at risk are able to keep themselves warm by heating their homes, wearing warm clothing and staying active. NNDC is working with a number of health and voluntary sector organisations to ensure those residents more likely to be affected by the cold weather receive a Winter Warmth pack. The packs include a range of products and information to help keep people warm and well in cold weather.
Those who will benefit from the packs are vulnerable people whose health and well-being is more likely to be at risk from living in a cold home. Priority will be given to people who are vulnerable due to age, disability, a pre-existing
health condition, a low income or who live in a poorly heated or insulated home.
The Winter Warmth pack contains a range of products including gloves, a hat, socks, a hot water bottle, insulated mug and a room thermometer. The room thermometer has been provided to help recipients check that their homes are at the recommended temperature of between 18 - 21°C (64 – 70 °F).
NNDC Cabinet Member for Health and Well-Being, Angie Fitch-Tillett, said, “The recent cold snap has brought in to focus just how important it is to ensure we consider the health and well-being of the most vulnerable among our communities. Remaining warm and well is often difficult for those on a low income, older people and those with long-term
North Walsham Times 416 February 16th 2013
health conditions. The range of products offered within the Warmth Pack will help make a real difference to those people. Distribution of the packs is already underway and I am pleased that we are working closely with many local voluntary organisations to provide help and practical advice to those in need.”
For further information and advice concerning energy efficiency in the home, please contact NNDC Housing Services on 01263 516315.
Additional services to support vulnerable residents are available all year round from statutory agencies in Norfolk. See
www.norfolk.gov.uk for details.

If you or someone you know has to go into care, what will happen to your home? by Christina Attridge, Hayes + Storr Solicitors
Of course, the answer to this question depends upon the circumstances eg. ownership and occupation etc.
Here I deal only with the rules relating to what is known as the ‘disregard’.
The value of a resident’s former home will be disregarded in the following circumstances:-
i) Where the same is occupied by a partner, husband, wife, civil partner or unmarried partner except where the resident is estranged or divorced from them.
ii) Where the same is occupied by a relative who is aged 60 or over or a younger relative who is ‘incapacitated’. ‘Relatives’ include parents, parents-in-law, son, son-in-law, daughter, daughter-in-law, step-parent, step-son, step-daughter, brother, sister, grandparent, grandchild, uncle, aunt, nephew, niece, spouse or unmarried partner of the foregoing and also including adoptive parents and adoptive children. ‘Incapacitated’ refers to a person in receipt of Attendance Allowance, Disability Living Allowance, Severe Disablement Allowance, Incapacity Benefit or anyone not in receipt of the above but whose incapacity is equivalent to that required for one of the above.
iii)Where the same is a former partner who is either divorced or estranged from the resident but who is a lone parent.
iv) Where the same is occupied by a child under 16 whom the resident is liable to maintain ie. is a dependant.
The value of the home must also be disregarded if the stay in residential care is temporary and the resident intends to return home or the resident is taking steps to sell it to find something more appropriate to return to.
The Local Authority also has a ‘discretionary’ power to disregard the value of the property where it is the home of someone else not included on the above list and may be exercised where:• The home is the sole residence of someone who has given up their own home to care for the resident, or
• Where someone is an elderly companion of the resident, particularly if they have given up their own home.
The Local Authority will also disregard the value of a resident’s former home for the first 12 weeks from the date of the resident’s admission into permanent care.

If that resident has entered the care home on a temporary basis and then decides to stay permanently the 12 week disregard runs from the date when the stay becomes permanent.

Norman Lamb MP supports Post Office DVLA win
The Post Office will continue to offer accessible driving licence and tax services to millions of customers in the UK, including in North Norfolk. Local MP Norman Lamb attended an event in Parliament last month to show his support for the win by signing a dedicated congratulations board.
Commenting, Norman Lamb, former Postal Services Minister, said “The Post Office is a vital part of communities in North Norfolk and has long provided a platform for essential and every day government services. I was thrilled when it was announced that the Post Office bid has been successful. I am dedicated to ensuing local residents can easily access services they need and think this is another step in reaching that goal. When I was Postal Services Minister I kept a close eye on the Post Office’s work on winning the contract. This is the tenth success in a row for Post Office Limited. It is also great news that we have the lowest member of Post Office closures for 25 years.”
Martin Moran, Commercial Director at the Post Office said “We are delighted to have the support of Norman Lamb MP. The Post Office has a strong track record in successfully delivering essential government services.
Many other driver transactions and motor vehicles services will also be offered through Post Office branches as a result of the agreement, meaning customers will be able to access a wide range of DVLA services under one roof.
Norman Lamb signing the board
Winning the DVLA contract again is testimony to the quality of our staff and subpostmasters, whose longstanding commitment to serving local communities contributed greatly to this success.”
The Post Office secured the seven year Framework Agreement with Department of Transport in November 2012. It confirms that the Post Office will continue to deliver DVLA services from spring 2013, including:
• • • •
Driving Licence photocard renewal Motor Vehicle Licence Issue Statutory off road notices (SORN) Duplicate Vehicle Licence.
The Post Office, now independent of Royal Mail, has an unrivalled national network of over 11,500 branches across the UK, more than all the high street banks combined, and sits at the heart of many communities across the country. The Post Office has made a commitment to no more branch closure programmes. It provides around 170 different services and products spanning financial services including savings, insurance, loans, mortgages and credit cards. Post Office also offers Government services; telephony; foreign currency; travel insurance and mail services.
It serves around 20 million customers a week and half of all small businesses. More than 99 % of people live within three miles of a Post Office branch. For many rural communities the Post Office is the only retail outlet. Post Offices remain highly valued and trusted and are the focal point for many communities. Half-term thrills and fun at the Atrium
There’s a new season of entertainment “licensed to thrill” at North Walsham’s arts centre, The Atrium. starting next week.
Top secret agent 007 James Bond is heading to town to kick off the spring programme in Skyfall (12A), showing twice during the half-term school holiday. The Bond movie stars Daniel Craig – hailed as one of the very best actors in the 007 role – alongside Judi Dench, Javier Bardem and Naomie Harris. Skyfall opens the new Atrium season at 2pm on Wednesday (20 Feb) with an evening showing on Friday 22 February.
Fans of the Atrium’s popular series of films including free afternoon tea and cake – all in the ticket price of £5 – will pleased to hear that the next in the list will be the spectacular costume drama Anna Karenina (12A) showing twice in March.
There are also half-term treats for children with a special visit to The Atrium by Rhubarb Theatre.
The company – headlining the children’s
programme at this year’s Glastonbury Festival - will hold a mask theatre workshop for 12-16year-olds at noon on Friday (22 February) followed by the live theatre show Paper Wings at 2.30pm. In the workshop Rhubarb Theatre members will use humorous full-face masks to explore the magic of mask performance. The session will include games and physical exercises and will cost just £2 for an hour. The afternoon performance of Paper Wings - aimed at all ages - will tell the story of Tatao and her mother, forced out of their own country and newly-arrived in a strange new world. Tickets are: £5 adults, £3 children, students and OAPs. Students from North Walsham High School follow the success of their 2012 show Grease with Footloose the Musical from 12-15 March.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
With the daylight hours increasing and hopefully the weather getting warmer, Spring is once again in the air for the un-neutered members of the cat population. Although most people are aware that it is important to get their female cats neutered to prevent unwanted pregnancies, there are those that believe it is not so important to neuter their tom cats. Unfortunately this can lead to heartbreak when the cat goes missing in search of a member of the opposite sex. In the past week Stephanie has had phone calls from two people whose cat (both under a year old) had gone missing. Although both these cats had operations booked, their hormones kicked in before the appointed day. A male cat will travel a long distance to find a receptive female and there are no guarantees he will be able to find his way home afterwards. These cats very often end up coming into our care several months later with no indication as to where they came from and sadly the worse for wear. There are also the added dangers of crossing busy roads where they could be hit by a car and injured, or worse. Un-neutered tom cats are also more likely to contact FIV or FELV should they get into a fight with another tom that has been infected with either of these Clarissa our cross-eyed cat who is looking nasty conditions. for a home with no young children.
Having your cat neutered is important and we will always offer vouchers to people on low incomes or benefits to help with the cost. Please pick up the phone and ring our neutering line if you think you are eligible as it could save a call to Stephanie to report your cat is missing.

A"Tail" of Wonder
I wonder why I am sitting here! I wonder why people look at me and walk by! I wonder why I have been here so long! I wonder if I have done anything wrong!
All these thoughts and more must be going through the head of a lovely little greyhound called Dana. She has just had her 5th birthday and is a really sweet and loving girl. She has been really well behaved when promoting Homefinders at shows and on walks. Her black coat with little white flecks all over it stands out and she will make a lovely, lovely pet for someone.
So why I wonder has she been sitting in a kennel for four months watching others around her go to new homes. Dana will make a loving, loyal companion as she adores being fussed and cuddled.
If you think you could give Dana a loving home and would like to meet her, get more information or arrange a home check, contact Homefinding Co-ordinator David Jones (Beeston Regis) through the Homefinders local rate call number 0845 458 3797 or drop in at our kennels at 51 Cromer Road (A140), Hainford (between Aylsham and Norwich). We are now open every day from 10am to 2pm.
February Offer Safe ‘chips’ for Dogs
The ‘Control of Dogs Act 1992’ states that: every dog shall wear a collar with the name and address of the owner attached to it; this means it is a legal requirement for your pet to be identified when out in public places. Unfortunately collars often come off or can be removed; the only permanent form of identification for your pet is by placing an ID chip into the skin of the ‘scruff’ between the shoulder blades. This simple procedure can be carried out by our vets without the need for anaesthetic or sedation. Puppies are normally ‘chipped’ at second vaccination at 10 weeks old. We are offering these id chips at the special price of £15.00 (usually £25.00) for February only. To book an appointment please call 01263 822293. Please bring this coupon with you to claim your discount.

British railways’ biggest engines come together at Poppy Line Steam Gala After the second World War the newly-nationalised British Railways was faced with the need to replace hundreds of worn-out steam engines. Chief engineer Robin Riddles designed a range of different standard types, from giant express engines to more humble freight movers. And the Poppy Line is celebrating the finest of these in a special Steam Gala which runs Friday 8th – Sunday 10th March, and Saturday/Sunday 16th and 17th March.
Interest will be focused on two crack engines, “Britannia” and “Oliver Cromwell”.
Both played a big role in restoring the UK’s express routes, and “Oliver Cromwell” hauled the fast trains from Norwich to London. The Poppy Line Gala will be the first time these two iconic engines have been seen together in preservation. Contrasting with them will be their giant freight counterpart, the 140-ton “Black Prince”, which Riddles built to handle heavy iron ore trains from the ports to the steelworks.
No.70013 “Oliver Cromwell”, once in charge of the fastest trains Three other engines from the from Norwich to London. fertile drawing board of Robin Riddles will also be running, including one – no. 76084 – which has just been restored, and which will become a regular on the Poppy Line.
The British Railways Standards Gala is a first for the heritage railway movement. General Manager Trevor Eady says: “It’s taken a couple of years to organise this event, and it should get our 2013 season off to a rousing start!”
Because of the cost of bringing in these giant engines, the railway has had to increase prices for the event – but there’s a 15% discount on all tickets booked in advance before March 1st (go to www.nnrailway.co.uk or call 01263 820 800). Rover tickets (which are valid all day on all trains) are £21 adult, £20 senior citizen and £13 child 5 – 15. Under 5s are free, and a family Rover (2 adults + 2 children or 3 adults + 1 child) is £54. 2- and 3-day Rover tickets are also available at discounted prices.
There will be intensive steam services every day of the Gala.
Healthy 2012 Visitor Numbers For The Poppy Line
Despite one of the wettest summers ever recorded in Britain, despite the rival attractions of the Queen’s Jubilee and the Olympics, and despite the difficult economic situation, over 148,000 passengers travelled on the Poppy Line in 2012. That’s just 1.5% down on the record number of the previous year.
Key to this sparkling performance were the railway’s special events. The programme included the tribute to the Ealing comedy “Titfield Thunderbolt Live!” in June, the Beer Festival in July, the Grand Steam Gala at the end of August and the re-enactment ’40s Weekend in September (which itself drew record crowds). “Titfield Thunderbolt Live!”

General Manager Trevor Eady commented “We certainly noticed a drop in passengers over the Olympics – probably a combination of the Games and the dreadful weather – but the full-year performance reflects great credit on our volunteers and staff.”

District Council urged to rethink new planned 'Parking Tax' for North Walsham
Conservative councillors at North Norfolk District Council have been criticised for plans to make two car parks in North Walsham 'season ticket only' with a cost of £200 per annum - taking away the existing free parking at the Mundesley Road and Midland Road sites.
North Norfolk District Council has also been attacked for dragging on the issue surrounding the future of North Walsham's car parks for over a year, and failing to carry out much-needed maintenance at Mundesley Road.
Commenting on the latest news David Spencer and Stephen Burke - Labour's candidates for the North Walsham elections – said "This is another Tory tax on parking. But worse than that, this would be another blow to North Walsham town centre deterring many visitors.
Clearly these councillors have not visited Mundesley Road car park recently and seen all the potholes. It is a disgrace. Also during the recent winter weather, the Vicarage Street Stephen Burke and David Spencer inspecting potholes car park was not cleared of snow and cars at Mundesley Road car park, where councillors want were trapped in it. It's time that the district council reviewed its parking policy so that to make the site "season ticket only". North Norfolk Labour Party are calling it actually attracts much needed shoppers on district councillors to include rethink councils that have introduced new parking to our town centres. A £200 fee for North their car park fees strategy before the 2013/14 schemes to encourage more visitors to use our Walsham is not the answer." budget is approved, and to follow neighbouring local town centres.
Crime figures show Norfolk stays ‘on top of its game’ Latest Home Office statistics reveal that crime across Norfolk fell year on year by 8 percent.
The report from the Home Office for the year ending September 2012 shows there were 3,455 less crimes during the period under comparison.*
With a crime rate of 46 crimes per 1000 population, this is well below the English national average of 68 crimes per 1000 and makes Norfolk the joint safest county in England.**
Among the highlights include burglary which reduced by 19%, compared to an 8% national reduction. Burglary from a dwelling was down by 22% across the county and there was a drop of 16% for burglary other than a dwelling. Norfolk has the joint lowest rate of burglaries in England *** with only 4 offences per 1000 population.
figures are somewhat historic, I am pleased to yet again welcome a positive performance by Norfolk Constabulary. I congratulate the Chief Constable and all police personnel on their contribution to making Norfolk a safe county. The challenge for me, is funding them to sufficient a level to maintain that.” * Comparing 2010/11 to 2011/12 (1 October to 30 September) a reduction of 42,697 crimes to 39,242 ** The same as North Yorkshire *** The same as Cumbria
WHITE HORSE Overstrand
Criminal damage reduced by 19% to 7,617 offences, compared to a national reduction of 13%, while robbery reduced by 19% to 189 offences. The year to date from 1 April 2012 to 30 November 2012 shows a robbery reduction of 34.1%.
Vehicle crime has reduced by 17% to 2,766 offences compared to a national average of 8%.
All Home Office categories saw reductions in the number of offences in 2011/12 compared to the previous year with the exceptions in violence against the person, drug offences and fraud.
Violence against the person year on year increased by 3% - a rise of 277 offences. Much of this increase is in the category of causing intentional harassment, alarm or distress and represents an increase in the activity by police to tackle violent crime and identify offenders.
Drug offences increased by 9% - a rise of 191 offences. This is classed as a ‘preventative crime’ by the force.Consequently, this rise can again be put down to police action to tackle and disrupt criminal activity to combat drug crime. Fraud and forgery increased by 11% to 768 offences. This category of crime is one of those currently ‘under-reported’ in Norfolk.
Deputy Chief Constable Simon Bailey said: “The Constabulary can rightly feel very proud of these results, alot of hard work has taken place to ensure the Constabulary continues to perform exceptionally well. The county remains a very safe place to live and with our partner agencies, we will continue to deliver a high quality service.”

Dear Margaret
There is a desperate shortage of both adopters and foster carers throughout the UK and more people from all walks of life are needed to come forward. Many people still believe being gay or lesbian, whether they are single or in a same sex relationship, is a barrier to adopting or fostering, but this is just a myth. Through our work, the British Association for Adoption & Fostering (BAAF) has met many amazing adoptive parents and foster carers from the LGBT community who have given hundreds of children a loving, safe and secure family life. We are, therefore, very pleased to support the LGBT Adoption and Fostering Week (4-10 March). There will be information events held across the UK, throughout the week, which will include opportunities to speak to others who have already become a family through adoption or fostering. So if you are thinking about adoption or fostering, please come along and find out more. To find your nearest event, please visit www.lgbtadoptfosterweek.org.uk or for more general information about fostering and adoption, please visit www.baaf.org.uk. Dear Margaret
Please could you thank readers of The North Walsham Times for the stamps they send me for the various charities that I support. I am now getting short of stamps so if any readers have any stamps or know of anyone who does, please could I ask them to send them to me at the address below. Could I also ask readers if they would be so kind as to make sure they put the correct postage on as I have had several lots where I have had to pay handling fees. Best wishes to you all and keep saving stamps Yours sincerely Jayne Manning, 111 Mill Road, Cromer NR27 0AD
Dear Margaret
I am from North Walsham town, a former North Walsham High School student, and at 19 years old I am currently a second year law student at Nottingham Law School. I am currently working with a charity called Childreach International which works in genuine partnership with local communities in the developing world to help improve children's access to healthcare, education, and child rights and protection. I am raising money for a project called 'the big build'. This is where I personally go to Africa with a small group of people to help construct a school for the less fortunate children. The school I will be building will be in the Berber communities in the Atlas mountains to help give children a greater chance in life. I have a target of £1350 to raise for the building materials/resources and have raised around £300 from small events such as the 'Boxing Day Dip' and public bucket collections. I am also going to be holding a pub quiz on 22 February, at the Bluebell Pub, North Walsham at 8.30pm, alongside a raffle, for £1 per person. Other events will follow to raise money for such a good cause. Through your paper I would like to raise readers’ awareness of what I will be doing to help the children in Africa. I also have a link to a donate page, which if any readers would donate to it would be greatly appreciated - https://mydonate.bt.com/fundraisers/remiegrice1 I also have a donations text code if any readers would like to donate just £3 that way. Text UNLOCK 111531 to 70007 to donate £3 directly to my target For further information on the charity please go to www.childreach.org.uk Thank you for your time. Kind regards Remie Grice

NORTH WALSHAM PROBUS CLUB
Have you considered a holiday in a historic building, for example Clytha Castle, Robin Hood’s Hut or even treading in the steps of Cardinal Wolseley at Hampton Court Palace? These properties were the subject of a presentation by Marie Stevenson to North Walsham Probus Club at the January meeting.
Unlike the National Trust which, apart from fundraising and donations, relies upon money bequeathed with the property, the Landmark Trust is concerned with smaller properties, many of which might disappear without the efforts of the Trust.
The Trust was founded 50 years ago by businessman and philanthropist John Smith to rescue properties which might be described as ‘too desperate, troublesome or unfashionable to preserve’. Often they are small properties of two or three rooms which are given a new lease of life.
A Choral Feast at St Peter’s Sheringham
On Saturday 16 March at 7.30pm St Peter’s Church Sheringham will welcome Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society directed by Nathan Waring for their Spring Concert.
The choir, which this year celebrates its 80th Anniversary, will perform Karl Jenkins Requiem which was composed by the Welsh musical wizard just a few years ago. Jenkins is now reputed to be the most performed living British composer.
Funds are obtained by letting properties for periods ranging from a few days up to possibly two or three weeks. The lets in Hampton Court Palace are two smaller properties within the curtilage of the Palace.
Such properties may have architectural or historic interest or evoke interest because of their former inhabitants. The latter include the late Windsor’s home in France, or Kipling’s in Vermont, USA - Sir John Betjeman’s former home, Cloth Fair, in London’s Smithfield, is another example.
Slides were shown of numerous properties including Manor Farm in Norfolk. Clavell Tower in Dorset, Glenmalloch Lodge in Galloway and St. Winifred’s Well in Shropshire, which may also be a place of pilgrimage. A notable example of how the Trust retains the culture of an era is the Lengthman’s Cottage in Warwickshire, with a barrel roof, built for canal workers.
Further information may be obtained on the Landmark Trust website, www.landmarktrust.org.uk
The Club meets again on the 27 February at North Walsham Community Centre. New members are cordially welcome. Ted Gadsden
Alongside this will be a performance of Five Mystical Songs by Ralph Vaughan Williams written some 100 years earlier. Ralph Vaughan Williams is arguably the greatest composer Britain has seen since the days of Henry Purcell. He composed music notable for its power, nobility and expressiveness representing, perhaps, the essence of ‘Englishness’. Five Mystical Songs is a setting of four poems by George Herbert, from his 1633 collection The Temple: Sacred Poems. The baritone soloist will be Jamie Wright, a choral scholar at York Minster. The concert will also include a short organ recital by Lawrence Tao, organist at Gresham’s School. He will play Bach’s Trio, Prelude and Fugue in C Major BWV 545.
Tickets £10 (£12 on the door) from Sheringham Little Theatre Box Office (01263 822347) and K Hardware, Cromer. Under 18s go free. For further details visit www.sheringhamandcromerchoral.co.uk
Inner Wheel Club of North Walsham
At the December meeting members enjoyed a Christmas Flower Demonstration given by Mrs. Wendy Pugh, using greenery and berries from her garden. We then had a delicious Lunch accompanied with much chat and laughter. The knitted baby clothes and toys made by friends of Inner Wheel were on display before being shipped to those in need.
In January the club meeting was held at the home of member Barbara Hankin. It is hard to believe our Club was formed nearly 65 years ago, but the first Inner Wheel was founded in Manchester 89 years ago on January 10th. To commemorate this, members made cakes which were distributed to the residents at Blacksmith's close in Trunch and others who now find it difficult to do home baking. These home made goodies are always accepted with appreciation and delight. New members are always welcome at Inner Wheel and any one interested should telephone the Secretary on 01692650223.

Motherhood is inspiration for new local business
A new mum from North Walsham has re-trained as a photographer after discovering a love of photographing babies and children.
Kerri- Alana Burrows, 30, discovered she had a talent for photography after taking snaps of her own children. When friends and family started asking her to take photos for them as well, she decided it was time to re-train and has now set up her own photography company, Pitter Patter Photos.
As a mum of two young children Kerri was well aware of the problems parents face when trying to capture the perfect shot. As a result Kerri decided to specialise in maternity, new born baby and child photography. She says: “Parents want a timeless piece of photography that they can treasure forever, but the perfect image can be difficult to achieve with very young children and babies.
“My experience with my own children has taught me how to make things comfortable, and I always take plenty of time. Nothing is ever rushed and each photo shoot is completely unique to the family involved.”
Kerri has had a lot of fun with her first photo shoots. They have included dressing newborns in cute outfits, babies posing in baskets and also a ‘cake smash’ in celebration of a first birthday. Kerri says: “We let the one-year-old loose with her birthday cake. She had a great and very messy time playing with and eating the cake. The resulting photographs are unique and something that will be really treasured.”
Kerri works from a studio in her own home, but is also able to travel to almost any location her customers chose.
For more information on Kerri’s work and availability, visit www.pitterpatterphotos.co.uk or call 07884 063191.

North Walsham Bonus Card to give boost to local shoppers and traders
The local Labour Party this month has launched North Walsham Bonus Card to encourage local residents to shop in the town and to boost North Walsham.
The Bonus Card entitles residents to discounts and special offers with participating retailers. So far 27 businesses have signed up and more are expected to join. Every business has a different offer for Bonus Card holders.
The North Walsham Bonus Card is being distributed to 7,500 households in North Walsham and nearby villages. Retailers taking part have posters in their windows to remind shoppers to use their card.
It is hoped the new scheme will bring savings to local shoppers, extra trade for North Walsham's retailers, and give a boost to the town's local economy.
Stephen Burke and David Spencer, Labour Party representatives in North Walsham, explained why they are helping local residents save money and support local businesses in North Walsham “Times are tough. Local families face a big squeeze on their income as austerity bites. This is having a real impact on local shops and businesses in North Walsham.
That’s why the local Labour Party is launching the North Walsham Bonus Card to help local families and businesses and to boost the town by encouraging local shopping.
The Bonus Card offers local residents discounts and special offers with local retailers who sign up to the scheme. It’s up to retailers what they offer Bonus Card holders. For example, it could be discounts of 5 or 10% or special offers which change each week. The Bonus Card is a win-win-win for local families, for local businesses and for North Walsham.”

Grumpy Old Man - Retail Therapy
A couple of shopping issues this month, the first up being of particular interest to men.
Men shop differently to women. If we need to purchase specific items we seek out sources and buy with the least possible fuss. Women enjoy shopping, apart from the weekly grind around the supermarket shelves, they love to browse and nowhere more than in fashion stores. If their husbands or partners accompany them, which when retired is pretty frequent, the men are in for a tough time.
From long experience I know that if I exhibit the slightest sign of disinterest or restlessness, a palpable tension manifests itself between us. Hanging around aimlessly soon makes my legs ache. Acres of space crammed with clothes and displays to hold female interest, but nowhere to sit down. In winter, wrapped in cumbersome outdoor clothing in a very warm store, adds to my discomfort. Preoccupied with my petty miseries it is disconcerting when my nearest and dearest suddenly confronts me with the question ‘What do you think of this?’
Caught unaware I have no idea whether I am expected to approve or disapprove, and domestic harmony for the remainder of the day
hangs in the balance …
When will the retail trade wake up and realise that if shops provide sufficient handy seating for men in their fashion departments, preferably with a few newspapers to peruse, everyone will be happier. Women will be able to relax and take their time knowing that the old man is comfortable instead of irritable and that he will be more likely to contentedly nod approval at a purchase.
The second issue which raises my hackles and mars the shopping experience is the way large organisations coach their staff to converse with customers in a pre-determined and formulaic manner which is so insincere that silence is preferable. A few examples: • ‘How are you today?’ • ‘Have you finished all your shopping today?’ • ‘Did you find everything you were looking for?’ • ‘Enjoy the rest of your day’ and so on. We are all peppered with these trite phrases to which we are expected to respond in an equally automatic way, knowing full well neither party gives a toss for either question or the answer. Conventional moves keep our irritation in check.
I am sure that being expected to quote these insincerities over and over ad nauseam during their shift at work seriously inhibits staff from interacting naturally with customers. Some of us like a bit of banter, others do not. Most of us dislike overfamiliarity, appreciate politeness and a natural smile and cannot bear indifference from staff, which is inexcusably rude. Are the retail gurus aiming to train the humanity out of their staff to a point where we will be unable to distinguish between them and the automated self service tills (which order us about like Daleks) in the hope that we will get used to dealing just with machines and screens? I think they may be. What a dreadful prospect. Huxley’s ‘Brave New World’ is becoming a reality, with a sheep-like proletariat kept amused and controlled by a small, powerful elite.
Before you dismiss me as a miserable old nutter, just think how browsing in shops, a social activity, is rapidly being replaced by browsing the internet, a solitary activity, with the huge social consequences already apparent.

More money for cycling in Norfolk 21 Cornish Way, North Walsham NR28 0AW
Norfolk is eligible for more money to improve cycling infrastructure, the Liberal Democrat Transport Minister, Norman Baker has announced.
Norwich will be able to bid for a share of the £30m available to improve infrastructure so that more people have the confidence to take up cycling. The Broads national park, in partnership with local councils, will also be able to apply for a share of a separate £12m fund to improve conditions for cyclists.
Meanwhile, Norwich station is due to get secure, sheltered bike storage with 242 new spaces as part of a £15m boost to the Community Linking Places Fund aimed at improving cycle-rail integration.
Commenting, North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb said “Cycling in the Broads is a real pleasure and popular with visitors to the area. By encouraging more people to get on their
providing more cycling facilities at Norwich station, and I’m delighted that Norwich is getting the vital infrastructure it needs. Making our streets safer and encouraging sustainable transport is so important. This investment is welcome news for cyclists wishing to use the train.”
bikes, we can help strengthen our local economy. That’s why I will be working hard to secure a slice of the money so we get our fair share and get those improvements in as quickly as possible. I often cycle in Norfolk and, while we’ve seen improvements in the past, more work is much needed. This additional money comes at the right time.”
Commenting, Norwich South MP Simon Wright said "I’ve had very positive discussions with Norman Baker and Greater Anglia about

Commenting further, Norman Baker said “Cycling is a great way to get around. Not only is it good for the environment and the economy, but evidence shows that with people who cycle living longer than those who do not it is also great for your health. The country’s success at the Olympics and in the Tour de France has brought cycling right into the public’s imagination and there is a huge appetite for better cycling provisions. This announcement capitalises on that and adds to the significant investment that we have already made to allow more people to get on their bikes.”
traditional jazz and is one of the best of its type in the region. It is always well received at The Crown.
An added attraction on 24 February will be guest bass player, Liz Underdown. The band’s regular bass player is working abroad and it’s always a delight to have Liz “stand in”. Liz is a full-time music teacher and, in addition to being an excellent bass player, plays piano and trumpet. Liz is the daughter of the band’s guitarist and banjo player, Peter Gregory. A “chip off the old block”. The remainder of the line-up will be: John Gooding (cornet), Tim Densham (clarinet and saxophones), Bill Brewer (trombone), Vic. Brown (drums).
Admission is always free at The Crown, but if you would like a table for lunch it is advisable to book. Tel: 01263 733534.

Council announces new Deputy Leader
Council Leader Tom Fitzpatrick announced Rhodri Oliver as the new Deputy Leader for North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) at the Full Council meeting on 23 January. He succeeds Cllr. FitzPatrick, who was appointed Leader of the Council in December. It was also announced that Russell Wright would be joining the NNDC Cabinet.
Educated in Holt and living in Aylmerton, the new Deputy Leader was elected as Ward Member for Sheringham South in the District Council elections in May 2011. At 22, he is NNDC’s youngest member, the 2011 council elections coinciding with his final exams at Imperial College, London, from where he successfully graduated with a degree in physics. He is Cllr. Oliver
currently studying for a law degree and is a keen racket sports player, representing Cromer in squash, table tennis and tennis. He will be a candidate for the Sheringham division in the county council elections in May.
Commenting, Cllr. Oliver said, “I have been actively involved in politics for over five years and am interested in all areas of local government. North Norfolk is a wonderful place but we know that as a council we can help our communities to make it even better. I am particularly keen to show that young people can make a real difference and I hope that my appointment will encourage more young people to get actively involved in their local communities.”
Russell Wright, 53, Member for the Astley Ward, which is centred on Melton Constable, and who runs a well-known design and build landscaping company, will join the six existing members of the ruling Conservative Cabinet, Tom FitzPatrick (Leader), Rhodri Oliver
TEL: 01263 511331 FOR FREE QUOTATION (Deputy Leader), Angie Fitch-Tillett, Trevor Ivory, John Lee and Wyndham Northam. Cllr. Wright was a member of NNDC 1991-1995, he was re-elected in 2011 and is currently also a member of Norfolk County Council.
Cllr. Fitzpatrick
Cllr. FitzPatrick said, “I am delighted to announce these two new appointments. Cllr. Wright will bring to the Cabinet many years of experience at both District and County authority level. He has solid business experience and this will be of real benefit in our work to help the economy in these challenging times. Cllr. Oliver has proven himself to be very able in his time on Cabinet and I am looking forward to working further with him in the coming months. I believe both these appointments will be welcome news.”
News from Paul Morse, Liberal Democrat County Councillor for North Walsham East
The bad weather has taken its toll on our roads and pavements. I am worried about how quickly repairs will be done; money is incredibly tight at the County Council and I have been finding for some time now that such work is being delayed longer and longer. Someone asked me why, with all the reduction in services of recent years, the Council Tax has not been cut. The answer is that, as well as the Council Tax, Councils receive income through grants from Central Government and these grants have been cut drastically.
During the icy weather I had a few calls asking why the Council grit this particular road but not that one. Where they grit is not my decision, though I do my best to influence. Getting new gritting routes is very hard and I was pleased to get Brick Kiln (where I have asked for an extension to the route) added to the top priority list last year.
I am trying to help the Gymnastics Club find a permanent home with exclusive use. The latest idea, which is quite promising, is somewhere at
Coltishall sit the County Council has just bought the ex RAF site. With a waiting list of 200 it is really important they find a home.
Being Chair of Governors at the High School continues to take up more time than I had expected. Something I have been really impressed by in my regular visits is how purposeful the School is, and the good relationships both amongst students and between students and staff.
Many of you will have read about Derrick Murphy, the former Conservative Leader of the County Council, being censured by the Standards Committee for his behaviour. We could do without such political shenanigans which have wasted an awful lot of resources and made County Hall a pretty nasty place in which to operate.

North Walsham Table Tennis Reverse Fortunes for NWSCB
Pirate’s Andy Marsh, Jack Bramwell and Barry Evans hosted NWSCB’s Dennis Elliott, Simon Halliday and Paul Price. In the reverse fixture at the start of the season in which the same six players were involved, Pirates had suffered a heavy 9-1 defeat. However this time Marsh came from two sets down to win the opener against Elliott 7-11, 8-11, 11-9, 11-5, 11-9 in a performance that earned him the player of the match accolade and which gave the Pirates the initiative they needed for the rest of the evening. Bramwell then defeated Halliday in five, before

yet another deciding set followed as Price took the first point for the visitors with a topsy-turvy 12-10, 5-11, 3-11, 11-3, 11-6 win over Evans. Bramwell then defeated Elliott 2-10, 11-9, 11-8 and Marsh beat Price in four. Halliday recovered from two sets down to deny Evans and Bramwell beat Price in four. Evans then played his third five-setter of the night, but this time it went the way of the Pirate as Elliott was left with nothing to show for the evening – Evans winning 11-6, 4-11, 5-11, 11-7, 11-8. Marsh conquered Halliday in straight, but

there was consolation for the NWSCB player in the doubles as he teamed up with Price for a straight sets win over Evans and Bramwell. However the night this time belonged to Pirates as their 7-3 win was a big reversal of the two team’s previous meeting.
