YOUNG FIRST AIDER JAMES PROVES HE REALLY IS A SUPER BADGER
Continued from front cover... In the past couple of years, other Norfolk youngsters have also demonstrated that the skills they learned with St John Ambulance Badger Setts could be put to use in very difficult first aid situations, proving that you are never too young to save a life.
North Norfolk Speakers Club
On Wednesday 2 October, North Norfolk Speakers Club hosted the Area Humorous Speech and Table Topics Contest in North Walsham.
Organised by Club President, David Beecroft, the library at North Walsham High School was transformed to accommodate guests from all clubs in the area, as well as a splendid buffet. The evening was a great success and contestants skilfully entertained and amused the large audience.
James received his Super Badger Certificate from North Anglia Badger Leader Linda Sweeney at a ceremony. He was also commended for passing his Eco Badger subject. At the same event, another Badger was enrolled into the North Walsham Sett and many others received awards, including one Bronze Paw and two Silver Paw awards, for their work in completing a variety of subjects which in time will lead to the Super Badger accolade.
James said 'I like Badgers. I have fun with my friends while learning lots of new topics about ourselves and our world. The best thing was when in groups we made volcanoes and the 'lava' came out.'
Susan Wallace, Leader of North Walsham Badgers, added 'James has worked very hard to reach the Super Badger level. He has always been willing to help out at the Sett and is very good at working with the younger Badgers. He likes learning about first aid and we hope he continues to enjoy his experience with St John Ambulance.'
Now that he has gained his Super Badger Award, James is back at the North Walsham Badger Sett for the new academic year and will continue to help some of the younger members of the group. His family has a strong first aid tradition and in addition to his mother, grandmother and sister being active St John Ambulance members his father is a workplace first aider too.

News from the White Horse Overstrand with Head Chef Nathan Boon
With Christmas just a few weeks away we are now taking bookings for Christmas parties and have our Christmas Day Luncheon and New Years Eve Dinner Menus freely available at the pub or if you prefer sent to you in the post.
Christmas is always a busy time for us and by the level of enquiries we have already received it looks as if we are going to have a very full pub throughout December.
Our Steak and Pie Nights every Wednesday evening until the 20th November are proving to be very popular and I will certainly be thinking about bringing them back early in the new year.
But before we get to Christmas we have our Halloween Party Night to look forward to. It’s always a great night with lots of people arriving in fancy dress and of course enjoying the live music which this year is from a band with a very large following ‘Blonde Horizon’ who will be performing in the bar from around 8.30pm until late. Don’t forget if you have are planning a Christmas party for you and your work mates or a get together with family and friends that for larger parties we offer a free

disco as part of our Christmas party Nights so it is certainly worth having a word with us before you make your final decision.

Norman Lamb gets flu vaccine, and urges those at risk to take up their jab when offered • had a stroke or a transient ischaemic attack (TIA) • diabetes • a neurological condition, for example multiple sclerosis (MS) or cerebral palsy • a problem with your spleen, for example sickle cell disease, or you have had your spleen removed.
North Norfolk MP and Health Minister Norman Lamb visited the doctor himself last month to get his annual flu jab.
Because he has a history of asthma, and his work frequently takes him into hospitals and care homes, he was advised to get the jab by his GP.
Speaking beforehand, Norman Lamb said “I would urge anyone who thinks they might be at risk – and in particular those over 65, and pregnant women, to get the jab early. Flu is very different from just getting a cold – it can be a really serious illness, leading to prolonged stays in hospital and even death. Even if you had the jab last year, or have already had the flu, it’s important to get the vaccine this year because flu changes every year. Flu is caused by a virus rather than bacteria, so antibiotics don’t work once you are ill – and symptoms can come on very suddenly. As soon as your doctor gets in touch, take up the offer and get the vaccine.”
Summary of those who are recommended to have the flu vaccine: ■ everyone aged 65 and over
■ all pregnant women, at any stage of pregnancy
■ all two and three-year-old children
■ everyone under 65 years of age (but over six months) who has a serious medical condition, including: • a heart problem • a chest complaint or breathing difficulties, including bronchitis or emphysema • a kidney disease • lowered immunity due to disease or treatment (such as steroid medication or cancer treatment) • liver disease
North Walsham Times 433 October 19th 2013
■ everyone living in a residential or nursing home
■ everyone who cares for an older or disabled person
■ household contacts of anyone who is immunocompromised
■ all frontline health and social care workers
The final decision about whether you should receive the flu vaccine is made by your GP, looking at your medical history and other circumstances.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
We are still trying to make contact with the owners of the young cat mentioned last time and, with help from the vets, will continue to do so. We are also still trying to catch the last cat from the feral colony but another kitten, Buckaroo, has been found and is now in our care.
There are many reasons for cats and kittens needing to come into care and we do have to give some special priority because their need is greater. A recent instance of this concerns four cats from a house where the marriage had broken down. Two of the cats had more or less been abandoned and were to be found outside the local store begging for food. Both of these cats had serious flea infestations with scabs in their coats and were underweight. Two of our fosterers live in Briston, the village concerned, and they and two local catteries were being contacted on a daily basis for something to be done. Fortunately, some other cats due to arrive at Hemsby at the beginning of the week went elsewhere so we had space available for the abandoned cats. Contact was therefore made with the owner to get him to sign all four cats over to us, which he was only

too happy to do. Our lives are often juggling acts and we could not take them in until we had space to hold them for a short time before transporting them from Briston to Hemsby. Andie, Amos, Remy and Riley are now making good progress, putting on weight and free from fleas.
If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.cats.org.uk/northwalsham for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered. If however you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher).
Our nurse clinics are designed with you and your pets in mind. Whether you are thinking of getting a pet and are not sure what breed to choose, or you want some help and advice with an existing pet, our nurses are here to help for FREE!
Nurse clinics are run daily at our Sheringham and Cromer surgeries, booking is essential as these clinics do get busy, for Sheringham call 01263 822293 or for Cromer call 01263 513976.
CLINIC TYPES
• New pet – advice prior to choosing your new pet from breed type, approximate cost and training. • One to one puppy and kitten clinics – monthly appointments to monitor the progress of your pet and discuss any issues you may have along the way. • Monthly weigh and worm clinics – for puppies, kittens and older pets, bring them along and let the nurses take the stress out of getting that tablet down! • Weight clinics – got a portly pet? Come along for an assessment – we promise not to tell you off! Our nurses are trained to assess body condition and manage weight loss at a healthy level. With monthly appointments we are able to monitor progress and adjust the plan accordingly making our plans individually tailored to your pets specific needs. • Dental checks - a 6 monthly invitation to get your pets mouth assessed, our nurses are trained to spot signs of gum disease or other common problems – imagine if you didn’t clean your teeth every day – we are here to help prevent problems occurring . • Senior clinics – a hugely popular clinic targeting the older pets as they enter their twilight years. Covering topics such as free blood pressure testing and blood analysis for kidney or liver problems at a reduced cost, this thorough clinic can help rule potential problems out or offer fast treatment to anything detected (Please note – nurses are unable to diagnose conditions by law and referral may be required to the vet – this will be at a reduced cost if booked through the senior clinic). • Suture removal and post-operative assessments – after surgery animals need to be monitored to make sure healing is progressing and completed. Usually 2 appointments are sufficient with the nurse signing the animal off after suture removal. • Arthritis clinics – keeping the older generation of pets moving and comfortable we are able to assist with the correct medication and dosage as well as an individually tailored exercise plan, with monthly or 6 monthly monitoring depending on circumstance this clinic will keep up with the changes experienced by older pets. • Pet Health Plans checks – our monthly payment plan, spreading the cost of your annual booster injections, worm and flea treatment. These clinics concentrate on keeping your pet well and up to date with preventative healthcare.

Gresham’s lends a hand to local charity North Norfolk Young Carers
Gresham’s School in Holt is delighted to announce their charity of the year for 2013/14 will be North Norfolk Young Carers.
Last year Gresham’s chosen charity was The Norfolk Hospice, Tapping House, where pupils and staff took part in a number of fundraising events which resulted in excess of £12,000 being raised.
This year the School is delighted to be working alongside Julie Alford – Manager, Youth Consultant and Senior Youth Worker at the award winning Holt Youth Project where a number of Lower Sixth Form pupils from Gresham’s will give their time supporting young carers.
member at home. The charity provides opportunities for them to take part in a range of activities as well as providing them with a meal giving them a much needed break from their busy lives. Currently one in twelve young people find themselves in a caring role in their family environment and one of the aims of this charity is to reach out to as many young people in the community and provide them with some support.
Julie Alford of The Holt Youth Project said, “Young carers is a very important part of our North Norfolk Young Carers is a very work. We deliver sessions on a regular basis to important charity, providing respite time and two groups of young carers, 6-11 year olds and support to young people who, for a variety of the 12-18 year olds. young carers we serve for them to meet with other young people in a similar situation.”
Many young people are unaware of the charity and the help and support it can give to young people undertaking a caring role. The charity is keen to raise awareness to children and young people across North Norfolk that help is available to them. If you know someone who might benefit or if you are a young carer looking for support in North Norfolk, then please get in touch.
Telephone: 01263 710918 www.holtyouthproject.org.uk/ activities/yooung-carers
The lunch is run solely by volunteers who do driving, to bring the clients to the community center for 12.30m and taking them home again at 3.15pm, waiting staff to serve the lunch, kitchen support staff to assist serving and washing up and not forgetting the drink waiters who also look after a lucky dip raffle and of course the preparation of table decorations. Also we must not forget the Community Centre staff for their dedicated help on Christmas Day. Could you help with driving or waiting? Other help you could give is to pop your green Waitrose tokens into our box in December.
This lunch is not entirely for old people, it is for any person who is on their own on Christmas Day living within North Walsham. We are not convinced that we are reaching everyone who qualifies so if you fall within this criteria, or know of anyone who does, please write to Mr. and Mrs. R. Another Vodafone signal blackout hits them to compensate customers, and telling parts of North Norfolk them that customer service still isn't good
Vodafone users in north Norfolk experienced another three day "black out" of mobile phone coverage at the end of September following more technical problems at their transmitter in West Runton.
Customers in Sheringham, Cromer and North Walsham took to the Vodafone internet forum to complain about more signal problems, with North Norfolk Labour Party also complaining to Vodafone executives about the network failure and demanding that customers are compensated.
In a statement to the party, Vodafone told them “We are sorry for the intermittent loss of coverage to some parts of North Norfolk. The air conditioning in the cabin at our site in West Runton became faulty which caused the site to shut down as the equipment overheated. This had a knock on effect to a number of other sites in the area as they link into the rest of the network through the West Runton site. We will continue to monitor the sites in the area to ensure that the coverage remains stable.”
The Labour Party here is continuing to press the major phone companies to bring better signal to North Norfolk and has been running a petition over the past 8 months to call for improvements from Vodafone. They raised the issue of poor mobile phone coverage in rural areas at Labour Party conference in Brighton in September.
Denise Burke, North Norfolk Labour’s prospective parliamentary candidate, said “I have been inundated with messages from Vodafone customers who live in north Norfolk who have been let down by the company over the past 12 months.
This issue highlights the problems we are facing in rural north Norfolk with regards to mobile communication. Even in areas where there is reportedly a good signal the infrastructure is so outdated that the connections are unreliable.
The phone companies need to get their heads together and come up with a solution that brings a decent phone signal to the many here in north Norfolk.
I have written to Vodafone asking

Local Artists’ Exhibition
Cromer artists, Leslie Hawkes Nockels and Des Clover, have work on show at a major NOVA (North Norfolk Organisation for Visual Artists) show entitled "NOVA EXPOSED” to celebrate the great new Atrium Gallery at North Walsham, 3 October - 6 November.
Leslie is showing “Salthouse”, originally began in 2007/8 and after many changes , it was quietly sidelined, its framing made it too big for her car – until NOVA this summer decided to have a selected exhibition of abstract or semi abstract work. “Salthouse” was taken out of the frame, and she took a deep breath and repainted the marsh, the dipping countryside and the sky filled with skudding clouds, with a total non-representational expression of the fierce wind blowing over the marsh, the light,
the shingle and the sea. Hence its title Salthouse: Wind, Marsh, Shingle, Sea – Inundation.
After Art School, Des Clover worked as a Graphic Designer and Book Illustrator for a London Publisher, followed by twenty five years as a Studio Potter in Cambridgeshire. He says ‘I have always painted but since moving to North Norfolk have been able to paint full-time.
Des Clover
They will both also be taking part in COAST – the Cromer and Sheringham Arts Festival 25 October to 3 November - her coast inspired paintings will be in a one man show at the Blue Sky Cafe, Runton Road, Cromer, and in the Nova exhibition Frieze Frame at the Garden House

Leslie and Des’ work will also be in Sheringham Library's “Sneak Preview” for COAST Festival running between 26 October and 3 November.
Cromer Artist Raises £29,300 for Charity in two Weeks
In only two weeks seven of Samuel Thomas’ commissioned animal sculptures were auctioned off for charity raising a collaborative sum of £29,300
On 19 September around 30 giraffe sculptures were auctioned off in Colchester, Essex, three of which were painted by Samuel and raised £9600. Fourteen days later on 3 October four gorillas were auctioned off in Norwich which were painted by Samuel, one of which sold for £7700. In total from both auctions Samuel raised a sum of £29,300 which will be donated to charity. On the same night around 50 gorillas were auctioned off raising an impressive total of £272,300. Charities that will benefit will be Break, Born Free to Wildlife conservation trusts and it is good to know that art work has an ability to reach different kinds of people in very different ways.
In fact it was this time last year when Samuel Thomas was first approached to take part in ‘GoGo Gorillas’ by the project manager Martin Green where they met at Samuel’s

‘ESCAPOLOGY’ Exhibition: Samuel Thomas and David Morris have teamed up for a collaborative show where stunning photography will be shown alongside originals and limited edition prints of Samuel’s. All of the work is available to purchase or leisurely browse. The two artists will also be showing slideshows exploring the theme of Escapism that runs throughout their work. There is also a ballot box where visitors can share their opinions and the best line formulated on escapism will win a £100 Art Gift Voucher.
Samuel and David have both captured Cromer and Norfolk in their very unique ways yet they have both captured the unique spirit and atmosphere of the place. Find out more about the exhibition by going online here: www.samuelthomasart.co.uk/BLOG The exhibition is open 25 October – 1 November 11am – 6pm in the Function Room, Red Lion, Cromer. NO/WHERE FESTIVAL AT THE ATRIUM
Horror, comedy and murder in first Atrium fringe festival.
An exciting four-day “alternative” extravaganza brings old and new film and live stage classics to North Walsham’s Atrium arts centre later this month.
The innovative festival will include the first vampire movie classic, a new children’s favourite, a late-night horror special and a new live stage version of a murder thriller.
“With a bit of play on the name and our town's abbreviation to NW, our festival will certainly put us on the map.”
International pianist and composer Roger Eno will be playing live for a screening of the 1922 vampire classic Nosferatu (PG) directed by FW Murnau on Wednesday 30 October at 7.30pm with all tickets £8.
And to end the festival there will be a daring, and saucy, cabaret evening.
The N/W NO/WHERE festival, running from 30 October to 2 November, is the brainchild of Joseph Ballard, artistic director at the Atrium.
He said “We're very proud to present the very first NO/WHERE FESTIVAL. It’s a fringe event to the local COAST festival which happens around the same time and we thought North Walsham shouldn't miss out! It all has a Halloween feel about it which is certainly the time of year to expect the unexpected! NO/WHERE came about when I asked a friend to come and perform in our theatre. He said ‘North Walsham - that's in the middle of nowhere isn't it?’
Children can enter a fancy dress competition, enjoy face painting and meet some Halloween characters from 6pm, before seeing Paranorman (PG) at 7pm on Thursday 31 October. Tickets are £5 adults and £4 children, students and over 60s.
This will be followed with a horror treat for adults with a 9pm screening of the 1976 movie
original version of Carrie (18) ahead of this year’s remake. All tickets are £5.
Stuff of Dreams theatre company revive the tense and exciting Patrick Hamilton play Rope which was turned into a stylish film classic by Alfred Hitchcock. Set in London in 1929 it is about two students who hide their murder victim in a box during a dinner party. Rope is suitable for those of 14 and over and is on stage on Friday 1 November at 7.30pm with tickets £10 for adults and £8 for over 60s and students. The climax of the festival will be a unique international Cabaret by Candlelight evening on Saturday 2 November. MC Hans Hoffyer will introduce guests Ivanna More, a torch-song diva, Minsky the Clown, Alex the Mindreader and more – all in an Atrium specially transformed for the evening. The cabaret show is suitable for those of 16+ with all tickets £10.
The Atrium is on Spenser Avenue, North Walsham, between the high school and the sports centre and is wheelchair friendly.

Decision to cut CCTV in North Norfolk is "reckless" - NNLP
CCTV is an essential part of keeping north Norfolk residents safe and councillors have made the wrong decision by voting to scrap it, North Norfolk Labour Party have argued.
The Labour Party had encouraged North Norfolk District Council to review how it can use CCTV more efficiently, but long-argued that turning them was not an option.
They believe that CCTV is a valuable resource in keeping crime low and keeping people safe, and also believe that CCTV gives north Norfolk residents, tourists, and traders confidence that they are safe in our towns.
Across the district parish and town councils including Cromer, Fakenham and North Walsham have spoken in support of keeping CCTV but the Conservative administration at North Norfolk District Council has voted to scrap the measures.
Stephen Burke, Labour's spokesperson for North Walsham, said "CCTV is an essential part of ensuring the safety in our town centres and we think it is reckless to be cutting it. We want to see North Norfolk maintained as an area of low crime, and these cameras act as a deterrent and keep residents, tourists, and traders safe on our streets. These systems act as criminal deterrents, and have the support of town councils as well as the police who have seen the benefits of having them installed. It is wrong that when just this year nearby district councils like South Norfolk are investing in new wifi set-up, we are cutting it altogether.”
Millfield Pre-School receives fun activity ideas from local supermarket
The team at Sainsbury’s North Walsham have donated copies of their ‘Bumper Book of Summer’, which contains a number of arts and crafts activities and recipe ideas which can be used whatever the weather, to Millfield Pre School.
The book was on sale at the store this summer and has helped tens of thousands of families across the UK have an action packed summer which didn’t blow the budget. Due to popularity of the book, the colleagues decided to donate copies to Millfield Pre-School. The store has worked with the pre-school, the charity chosen by customer and colleagues at Sainsbury’s North Walsham as the Local Charity of the year.
Rachel Griffiths, Lead Practitioner/Manager of Millfield Pre-School said “We’re very grateful for the donation of these activity books, which we will look to use for future fun-days and events. They’ll help our staff here to create some great action-packed days for everyone”.
The donation of the books is just one of the ways of building the store’s partnership with their charity partner. The next planned activity is to support sponsored runners in a half marathon.
Sainsbury’s North Walsham Store Manager, Rob Wilkinson, added “Helping give our community opportunities to live well for less is really important to us. There are lots of great activities in the book which can be used throughout the year and we look forward to helping Millfield Pre-School do some of the boredom-busting ideas in the coming months”.

North Walsham Probus Club Do we regard the sea as ‘friend’ or ‘foe’?
This was a question posed by Brian Hedges when he gave a slide show presentation on the 1953 floods, at the meeting of North Walsham Probus Club last month.
For those who experienced the catastrophic events of that fateful January night the perception must certainly be one of fear.
The effect of an exceptionally high tide, aided by a Force 10 wind, driving towards the south led to a total of 307 deaths, of which 100 were from Norfolk. Not surprisingly many beach huts, caravans and the recently constructed post war ‘pre fabs’ were swept away. Canvey Island alone suffered 58 fatalities.
Vessels were swept ashore, notably the ‘Olcades’, a refuelling ship with a displacement of about forty thousand tons. Another hazard was the pollution of water.

Scary Halloween Trail Saturday 26 October – Sunday 3 November daily, 10am-4.15pm
Spooky stories on a trail through the park.
Amid the chaos and fear one name which immediately comes forward is Reis Leeming, an American airman stationed at the US base at Sculthorpe who was accredited with rescuing twenty seven victims. He finally had to be rescued himself when he collapsed through hypothermia. His heroism was recognized by the award of the George Medal. He also celebrated his wedding at Hunstanton the following June, and returned from the US for the fortieth and fiftieth anniversaries of the disaster.
While his was probably the most outstanding feat during the night of 31 January, there was a spontaneous response from the WVS and army personnel stationed in the vicinity. Mentioning individuals is liable to prove invidious when describing this kind of disaster but Police Sergeant Garnham, and Archie Burrell,

a member of the St John’s Ambulance Brigade, both from North Walsham, played an exceptional role in the rescue and rehabilitation of many victims
The reason for the exceptional surge tide was the high wind which created unusual pressure between the narrow strip between the East Coast and the continent. The likely of a similar tide is likely about every two hundred years. The loss of life may have been less had warnings been given when the surge first affected Lincolnshire, which may have enabled the emergency services to provide a better coordinated response.
Weather forecasts are now extremely accurate compared to sixty years ago and the emergency services do have plans to deal with such major disasters.
The next meeting will be on 23 October at the Community Centre, when we look forward to seeing new members. Ted Gadsden

North Norfolk Social Centre for the Blind
What a great afternoon was spent at the meeting on Thursday 3 October - not only were we entertained by the Decibells, a group of people who certainly knew how to bell ring - it was beautifully done, we never knew that bells could sound so great – but it was also the Club’s 67th birthday which we all celebrated with a beautiful birthday cake made by our very own Peter Berthelot.
Our second hand clothing stall raised £16 and the raffle cashed in at £46.
Our fundraising this summer has been boosted by volunteers enjoying the fun to raise money for the club. We would like to thank all the members that gave donations for our Cromer Carnival car boot which raised £160 and a big thank you to Mrs Mace and her daughter Stephanie who do regular fund raising and donated £400 from tombolas at Sheringham Carnival and Mannington Hall.
The Club’s September meeting was our annual bake off day when all members bake cakes to fund raise. It was a sell out again and we raised £63. We would like to thank all members for their support. The day was finished off with a good ol’ game of Bingo – what a laugh but we are getting to know the game better and we all enjoyed it.

WHEN RESPONDING TO SERVICE GUIDE ADVERTS!
Improvements planned for NNDC offices
Work to improve customer service is planned for North Norfolk District Council’s (NNDC) Cromer office. Plans are in place to refurbish the reception and foyer to create an improved service environment for the benefit of customers and staff. Officescape, a Kings Lynn based company specialising in office design, has re-designed the reception area to create a more accessible and welcoming environment and to make better use of the available space. Reeves Property Restoration Limited, a Norwich-based firm has been appointed to undertake the building work which is planned to start in early October. A new desk will be added at the entrance to the reception area, allowing staff to ‘meet and greet’ visitors and will ensure they receive a more efficient response when they arrive at the council office.
Three self-service computers will be available for public use, and staff will be on hand to assist customers wishing to use them to access council information; or to make payments for services online to save them waiting to be seen. More complex enquiries will be dealt with in private interview rooms. Councillor Russell Wright, North Norfolk District Council’s Cabinet Member for Customer Service said: “The Cromer reception area has not been reviewed in terms of how well it serves our customers since 1999. We are looking forward to fully utilising the space so that so that we can serve customers even more professionally and efficiently than we currently do. I am confident that the newly designed area will be a more flexible environment that will enable us to meet customer needs, whether they wish to talk to a member of staff or if they are happy to use our serve-serve computers. I would like to ask the public to bear with us

Hallowe’en is fast approaching, and the Poppy Line is ready with a week that’s full of treats and tricks. Ghoulies and ghosties abound! At Weybourne Station, if you’re feeling brave enough, you can enter the spook-laden Hallowe’en Hall, hellish haunt of witches, warlocks and shuddering spiders. You can get in (and out again!) free with your Rover train ticket. There are special free-to-enter prize competitions – a fancy dress con-

during the refurbishment period and disruption will be kept to a minimum." Works were due to start on Tuesday 8 October and are expected to take around six weeks to complete. The existing reception area will be closed to the public while the improvements take place. From Monday 7 October, NNDC’s Customer Service team, including staff from the Housing and Planning departments will be based in a building (the ‘annexe’) located in the overflow car park at the far end of the main council building. There will be no change in the opening hours.
Customers are reminded that they can contact the council online at www.northnorfolk.org or by calling 01263 5136811.
test for the best-dressed Hallowe’enster (age limit 15). And we’ll be looking for the best carved pumpkin, which will earn the winner a family ticket for a fabulous Day Out with Thomas next May. Naturally, there’s a special Ghost Train. On Hallowe’en itself, Thursday October 31st, the Ghost Train will leave Sheringham at 6.30pm, returning around 9.30pm. Listen to ghostly tales of Norfolk as you ride through the darkness – and make sure you bring a camera to grab ghostly images all along the line! Tickets for the Ghost Train are £10 for adults and £5.50 for children between 8 and 15. Booking is essential – online at www.nnrailway.co.uk, by phone on 01263 820 800, or in person at Sheringham station office.

Dear Margaret,
I feel I must write to answer the doom and gloom letter printed in your September issue from Ross Wordie.
As far as I am aware the NNR have no intention of running services between Sheringham and Norwich but only to extend the line to Melton Constable and then to Dereham as part of the coastal rail network.
It does however make sense to only have one station in town and I really think that the minimal disruption of two trains an hour will not bring the town to its knees .In any case any disruption could be minimised by implementing the one way system proposed some years ago, bringing traffic from a new mini roundabout on Weybourne Road down Church St then down The High Street then Wyndham Street and out of the town by way of Beeston road, with another mini roundabout on Cromer Road.
This would have the advantage of freeing up Station road for the relocation of both the Wednesday & Saturday markets and other events enabling more parking spaces to be available on market days, leading to more potential customers for the shopkeepers. As an aside, if our shopkeepers are so concerned regarding loss of trade, why were so many closed on the Sunday of the recent 40s weekend organised by The Lobster, in spite of the town heaving with ‘potential customers’.
I think on the whole our local councillors do a fairly good job but they could look at why some of the Common on the way to Beeston Bump is being fenced off by some of the houseowners along Nelson Road and also why there is no light working at the bottom of the black steps leading to East Beach from Vincent/ Cliff Road. I await their reply with interest .
Yours sincerely, Graham McEvoy Sheringham

North 28 Walsham Times 433 October 19th 2013
Dear Margaret,
When myself and colleagues met with senior management at Vodafone earlier this year we told them the problems customers in North Norfolk were experiencing were simply not good enough. Indeed, from their full page advertisement in newspapers it appeared they had taken on board that they needed to improve.
Six months on it only takes a quick search on Twitter, a look at the petition at www.vodafonenfk.com, or a glimpse at Vodafone's online forum to see that the company has a long way to go.
Failures with equipment, like the incident with the cooling fan over the weekend of 21/22 September or the power cut in July, I accept are often unavoidable. However, how you deal with these problems make all the difference. There is still a delay in Vodafone accepting and communicating the problem, dealing with quickly enough, and issuing compensation for inconvenience, when appropriate.
The outdated technology that is in place in rural areas also means that when one transmitter has a problem (for instance in West Runton) customers across the district also suffer (as far as North Walsham). In May Vodafone accepted this large relay infrastructure was not ideal and part of the problem.
So far the company has conceded that in September those connected to the Bacton transmitter suffered more than 3 days loss of coverage and therefore will be compensated - I recommend that they take this up - but I still believe they need to go further.
Vodafone made assurances to me that North Norfolk was on the map for improved technology which could also include significant 3G upgrades. This is welcome, but with on-going problems continuing to plague customers I would appeal to them to speed this process up. After all, how many customers will they be left with if they continue to offer a poor service in Norfolk? Jono Read Press Officer for North Norfolk Labour Party
Dear Margaret,
May I put your correspondent Ross Wordie right on one important point? The North Norfolk Railway is NOT behind the plans for a Norfolk Orbital Railway, and certainly does NOT intend to turn the Poppy Line ‘into just another link in a regular train service between Norwich and Holt or beyond’, as Mr Wordie alleges.
Absolutely not. It is the NNR’s firm intention and future strategy to focus on running the steam heritage railway between Sheringham and Holt. Any plans the Norfolk Orbital Railway and the Melton Constable Trust may have (if they ever come to fruition!) will need to fall in with that strategy, which will not be compromised.
The Poppy Line, as Mr Wordie says, is one of our major tourist attractions. This year it is set to carry well over 150,000 passengers, many of them people who come to Sheringham expressly to ride on the railway, and who afterwards spend time and money in the town.
That’s reality. The plans for a Norfolk Orbital Railway are, by contrast, so much “pie in the sky”.
And whatever those plans are, they do NOT, repeat NOT, come from the NNR. Colin Borg, North Norfolk Railway

THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER COLCHICUMS
leaves. These follow later and persist until early summer. Remember if you are planting them that the foliage takes up more room than the flowers and is very untidy.
Among the most spectacular autumn garden flowers are the Colchicums, also known as Autumn Crocus or Naked Ladies (and in Norfolk ‘Strip-Jack- Naked!). The name comes from Colchis (an ancient kingdom – and home of all sorcery – set between the Caucasus to the north and Armenia to the south) where the first plants are said to have sprung from drops of the potion brewed by the enchantress Medea, daughter of the king of Colchis, to restore youth to the ageing Aeson. They are certainly powerful plants, since all parts yield the drug colchicine, a cure for gout.
Most of the colchicums flower without any
There are many varieties but ‘Rosy Dawn’ and ‘Waterlily’ are very hardy and widely available.
The bulbs are still available as I write but they are not convenient things for bulb sellers to deal with as they are in active growth –first the flowers and then the leaves – over a long period. Colchicums generally like deep, fertile soil that is well drained but does not dry out completely. Though they will put up with some shade, they flower most freely in an open site in full sun. Deer, rabbits and mice seem to leave them alone but you need to guard against slugs. After three or four years you may need to lift and split overcrowded clumps.
Colchicums are sometimes recommended for growing indoors; just set on a saucer with no soil or water. They will flower, because in the wild they are used to hot, dry summers and only produce roots after flowering, when the autumn rains begin. However you must plant them outside immediately after flowering to build up the corm for future years.
NORTH WALSHAM IN BLOOM
The time has come to once again take down all the hanging baskets in the town. So on the morning of Sunday 6 October a group of around a dozen In Bloom members and helpers met in the market place to do just that. Several people brought ladders, and with the help of our chairman, who drove the vehicle and the extremely kind lend of a large trailer, we had all the baskets down and cleared away within couple of hours. That is team work for you! There were over sixty baskets to be dealt with, and one thing North Walsham In Bloom is very good at is pulling together. On a more serious note, some of our members have been asked by members of the public why we have “abandoned” the two beds on Yarmouth Road. This is certainly not the case. As some of you may remember we had an issue in June with a lot of the plants dying off without explanation. Our technical advisors – Orchard Farm Plants of Spa Common – were of the opinion that some sort of chemical has caused the problem, as a result of which we were advised to leave the beds alone completely for as long as possible to give the chemical a chance to break down. The beds have recently been lightly tidied and on 14 October we will be replanting with a large number of spring bulbs, as these were felt to be most suitable under the circumstances. Our autumn planting starts on that day and it will be all hands to the pumps for the following fortnight to ensure that everything is completed before the half term hits us.
WINDOW & DOOR REPAIRS
Apart from planting colchicums there are plenty of other jobs that need doing to prepare for winter including: • Bring tender plants under cover before the first frosts • Plant spring bedding such as wallflowers and polyanthus • Batten down the hatches ensuring that nothing can blow about and cause damage on windy nights • Plant tulips and hyacinths • Clear up fallen leaves and compost them • Tidy perennials, removing dead stems but leaving seed heads for birds to eat • Rake fallen leaves from the lawn and then scarify, aerate and top dress the grass • Clear debris, weeds and excess oxygenating plants from the pond but leave them on the side for 36 hours to allow wildlife the chance to return to the water • Indoors, stand houseplants on trays of gravel to counteract the drop in humidity when the central heating comes on. North Walsham Table Tennis STAR PAVING SERVICES
NWSCA Start League Defence in Style
After three weeks of Cup games, the Star Paving Services North Norfolk League itself has started with all five home teams in action. NWSCA started their defence of the first division at home to Backhanders. The team of Andy Beane, Tom Baldock-Yaxley and John Batchford hosted the Cromer trio of Teucer Wilson, Whil De Neve and Paul Warner with Beane coming back from 2-6 down in the last set of his opener against Wilson as he took the set 11-8 to close out his win in four. Errors from Baldock-Yaxley cost him as De Neve took the first set 13-11, but the NWSCA player came back to win a game of good rallies in four and later completed his maximum by edging out Warner 16-14 in the third. NWSCA won the match 10-0, but it was far from one sided with Batchford winning the game of the night against Wilson 15-13 in the fifth. Three more sets went to the visitors with Beane and Batchford dropping a set against Warner and De Neve respectively and another together in the doubles. NWSCD ran out 10-0 winners against Barracudas. Mary Sawyer was struggling with illness but still managed a
comeback from two sets down against Derek Philpott with her 5-0 lead in the decider proving decisive. A comeback from 7-10 down against Rex Parfitt was also important as Sawyer took the first 14-12 and took her third match-point chance to win in four. Joe Kirkup often flirted with dropping a set, but took a maximum in straight, coming back from 7-10 to edge out Philpott 13-11 in the third. Sean Grimes hit a great reaction winner from a net-cord against Kirkup and converted his fifth chance to take a set from Philip Stone. Kirkup and Stone were without a doubles win until the very last game of last season, this year they took their first with a win in straight against Grimes and Parfitt.
Three players made their League debuts as Andrew Weston and cousins Ben and James Lester lined up for NWSCE in the second division. John Hall took a maximum for Aylsham C, edging out James Lester 13-11 in the fourth and was supported by a single from Gina Atherton who defeated Weston in five. The NWSCE player defeated Roger Crouch in five and with the cousins both taking braces the

Added to this, two months ago (as you may have seen in the local papers) Gill helped to deliver her granddaughter Katie after Gill and her daughter were
doubles again proved vital with the Lesters defeating Hall and Crouch in five to claim the match 6-4. On the adjoining table Joel Lodge played up for NWSCC, replacing injured captain Chris Johnson and joining Phil Mole and James Morter for a 10-0 win against Sheringham’s Lighthouse LCC team. The closest encounter proved to be the doubles as Lodge and Morter beat Emma Holt and Sophie Mutton 11-2, 11-7, 14-12.
To round up the remaining home team based action and there were two wins against two Trunch based teams as NWSCB beat both Sharks and Barracudas 8-2. NWSCE trailed Gresham’s School B 0-8 before Edna Stone picked up a single and Stan and Brenda Baldock won the doubles and in their third match this fortnight NWSCE beat LCC 10-0. Finally Mary Sawyer lost out in five to Hubert Cheng as Gresham’s School A beat NWSCD 9-1. All five North Walsham teams feature in the top halves of their respective divisions, but of course it is very early days.
told they had to travel to the James Paget hospital. Little baby Katie couldn't wait and Gill helped deliver her safely to the world en route to the hospital at Gorleston.
Gill has made such an impact at the Slimming World group that the members voted her 'Woman of the Year for 2013' because she had touched everyone of them with her life changing achievements.
Gill said 'The eating plan is so easy, I can enjoy totally unlimited meat, fish, potatoes, pasta, fruit and vegetables and can still enjoy treats like ice cream each day too. My favourite meal is chilli and the whole family can enjoy it too, the recipes
are so quick and easy and taste wonderful, it’s just choosing and cooking differently really.
The North Walsham Slimming World groups are held at the North Walsham Community Centre, New Road on Mondays 10am and Wednesdays at 5.30pm and 7.30pm.
