Society Celebrates Centenary! Covering North Walsham, Aylsham and surrounding villages in association with the Cromer Times and Sheringham Independent
The Cromer and Sheringham Operatic and Dramatic Society are celebrating their 100th year in 2014. They have many events planned, the first of which was this photo on Cromer beach with over 100 members of the society making the number 100 on Cromer beach.
The age range of CSODS members in the photo was from someone in their nineties to a seven year old junior member who is just about to start rehearsals for the musical Oliver!
Some of those present had been in the society over forty years while for others this is the first year of membership. This award winning society have raised thousands of pounds for various charities, both local and national over the years, and this year are raising money for ‘About with Friends’ a Cromer based charity that helps adults with learning difficulties live the lives they choose, the Sheringham Salvation Army’s Christmas care project, ‘Toy and Tins’ which is being run in conjunction with Norfolk Radio, and ‘Changing Faces’ a national charity that helps those with facial disfigurements.

Have a heart and donate for cancer patients in need
With thousands of cancer patients receiving blood transfusions every year, NHS Blood and Transplant is challenging people to make a date to donate to mark this year’s World Cancer Day.
On 4 February people from around the world will join together to dispel the myths around cancer for World Cancer Day. Many people who develop cancer have a need for red blood cell or platelet transfusions during their treatment. Cancer patients may develop anaemia (a reduction in the number of red blood cells in their blood) or have a reduced number of platelets in their blood (the clotting cells which prevent bleeding). This can be due to the cancer or its treatment, including chemotherapy and radiotherapy. A blood transfusion can give a patient more energy and improve the quality of their life.
Derek Carr, NHS Blood and Transplant’s Lead Donor Relations Manager for the Anglia area, said “With platelets only having a shelf life of seven days and red cells having a shelf life of 35 days, patients depend on the generosity of blood and platelet donors to provide the vital transfusions they need.
“World Cancer Day is a good time to remember that blood is not only given in accident and emergency situations but also for patients undergoing surgery and receiving treatment for cancer and blood diseases. With around 7,000 units of blood needed every day, I would encourage both new and returning donors to make a date to roll up their sleeve and donate.” Once blood has been donated, it is broken down into individual components including red cells and platelets. Platelets can also be collected separately from donors using special machines at 24 centres across England.

News from the White Horse Overstrand with Head Chef Nathan Boon
We are already half way through the month of January and we have started planning our Mothers Day Luncheon, but first we have to complete our preparations for Valentine’s Day, which this year is on a Friday.
We will of course be offering our usual romantic Valentines Day Menu and this year extending the celebrations to the 15th with a special Sharers Menu served in the bar and again offering our Valentines Menu as well as our as usual Evening Restaurant Menu.
To add to the atmosphere we have live music in the bar on the Friday and Saturday night.
We have also arranged a special pre- and postPantomime Menu for the Overstrand Pantomime ‘Sleeping Bewty’ which is being staged at the Parish Hall on the 20th - 22nd February 7.30pm as part of our charity fund-raising events for Nelson’s Journey.
It should be a really fun evening and we thought it would be a good idea to offer a special meal deal by way of a thank you to both the audience and of course the ‘thespians’, many of whom are regulars at the White Horse.
Don’t forget we are still running our ‘2 fo1 Meal Deal’ Monday - Friday lunchtimes and our ‘Speciality Food Nights’ are also making a welcome return every Wednesday evening starting in February.

Do you have a few hours to spare per month?
You could change the life of a child or young person.
Action for Children’s Norfolk Independent Visitor Service is looking for volunteers to befriend young people who are looked after by Norfolk Children’s Services and who have little or no contact with their families.
Young people who are in care, experience huge change in their lives, can be very isolated and emotionally vulnerable. Volunteers act as adult role models and enable children to have someone who is outside of ‘the system’ in their life. Someone who is there just for them.
Volunteers offer a listening ear, understanding, support and encouragement and have lots of fun in the process! Volunteers get to take their young person out on trips and visits to places such as the beach, cinema and zoo or they often simply have a kick around in the park or sit and chat together over a coffee.
You don’t have to have experience to volunteer you just need to be committed to the improving the life of children and have some free time on a regular basis.
For more information please contact Steph at the Norfolk Independent Visitors Service on 01362 697537 or 07843345740, or e-mail: independentvisitors.norfolk@actionforchildren.org.uk Website: www.actionforchildren.org.uk North Walsham Times 439 February 1st 2014

Big Country to play at Reepham Festival
Organisers of this year’s Reepham festival have announced that legendary rock band Big Country are to headline the two-day festival in August.
From 1983 onwards Big Country delivered a series of multi-million selling singles and albums including the classics In A Big Country, Wonderland, Fields of Fire and Look Away. The 1990s saw them touring with the likes of The Rolling Stones and The Who. In 1998 they opened for the Rolling Stones on their ‘Bridges To Babylon’ tour of Europe prompting Mick Jagger to comment that Big Country were ‘one of the best opening bands we ever had’.
2007 saw a reunion of the band accompanied by renewed success, endorsed by appearances at the Isle of Wight, T in the Park, Oxegen and V Festivals in 2011 and 2012. Last year saw a major tour with new bassist Derek Forbes, ex-Simple Minds, who was voted Best Scottish Bass player of all time.
‘We’re really pleased to have been able to secure Big Country, especially when they are being scooped up by major festivals across the UK and Europe’ said Festival Chairman Steve Jenkins. ‘It just reinforces Reepham’s growing presence on the festival circuit. Reepham has a reputation for being able to bring in a well-known headline band each year - Big Country continues that tradition and will undoubtedly appeal to older and newer fans alike.’
Eating Disorders Awareness Week 24 February – 2 March
Beat – the Norwich-based national eating disorders charity celebrates its 25th anniversary during 2014
2014 is extra special as awareness week marks the start of Beat’s 25th anniversary. Since 1989 we have been supporting those with an eating disorder as well as their family and friends, providing information through our Helplines, UK wide network of self help and support groups and online support; providing expert training and resources to professionals and schools; supporting and encouraging research and campaigning for better services and access to treatment.
To mark our special year on Wednesday 22 October we shall be holding a Memorial Service in Norwich Cathedral remembering those who’ve lost their lives to eating disorders. Attending will be family and friends from across the UK who’ve lost a loved one or experienced the distress these devastating illnesses can cause.
Raising awareness is a serious matter, but it can be fun too. During the week we run our Sock it to Eating Disorders fundraising campaign and encourage people to get silly with their socks and raise funds for Beat. Supporters can hold silly sock days at school or work, organise a sock themed bake sale or take part in a sponsored event in bright and funny socks. This year the campaign is being supported by Britain’s Got Talent winners dance group Diversity.

Around fifteen bands and artists will be performing over the Festival weekend of 9th and 10th of August and ‘Early
Bird’ tickets are on
sale from Saturday 1st February priced at £17.50 instead of the full price of £20. Discounted camping tickets are also available for a limited period
‘We’re expecting even more people to buy in advance this year’ explained Steve Jenkins ‘partly because the event sold out in 2013 and we had to close the gates early, but also because Big Country are appearing – which has already attracted a lot of attention through social media such as Facebook and Twitter.’
Details of ticket prices can be found at www.reephamfestival.co.uk and can be bought from UEA Students’ Union at www.ueaticketbookings.co.uk 01603 508050 and at Soundclash, St Benedict’s Street, Norwich, Very Nice Things, Reepham and from Whitwell & Reepham Station.
Dementia Summit
Following last month’s G8 Summit on dementia, Norman Lamb MP is calling on his constituents to share their personal experience of care for people living with the condition, to help inform a ground-breaking national programme of inspections which is being led by the Care Quality Commission (CQC). The CQC is undertaking 150 inspections of care homes and acute hospitals across England until the spring of 2014. The findings will help paint a picture of how people with dementia are cared for with a view to improving the quality of care for people with the condition. People can share their experiences with the CQC in the following ways: by email at dementiafeedback@cqc.org.uk by telephone on 03000 61 61 61 or online via a webform CQC is also working with local groups to gather people’s experiences including: Age UK, Dementia Action Alliance, Regional Voices, Dementia Advocacy Network and the Race Equality Foundation. Norman Lamb said “I see in my role as Health Minister, and in my constituency, the suffering caused by dementia not just for those with the condition but also for their friends, families and carers. Dementia affects 670,000 people in England, and this is set to rise considerably in the future. We want people to able be able to live independently at home for as long as possible but, when their needs are such that they need to go into a care home or hospital, it is so important that they are well looked after. “It is important that the CQC is carrying out focused inspections of care for people with Dementia – this can be one of the hardest things to get right in our health and care system, and the quality of care for people with dementia varies substantially. There are too many cases where standards of care for people with dementia are simply nacceptable. This is an opportunity for people touched by dementia to share their experiences of care homes and hospitals so we can see what works well and what needs to improve. “There are three areas where we need to do more: better diagnosis rates, better care for those with the condition, and better co-ordination and funding of research into the condition.” 7

At our December meeting, our President, Elsa Sequeira, welcomed 11 members and one visitor. We all took along a non-perishable food item as our talk was by Tina and Malcolm Nicholas of the Cromer FoodBank.
For anyone who wasn't aware of how Food Banks came into being and how they helped people in need, this was a very interesting and informative talk. Detailing the stages from the idea of a Cromer Foodbank to extend the reach of the Norwich one, through the staggering attendance of over 100 people at their first meeting followed by finding storage space and a depot and extending even further to include Sheringham, Aylsham, North Walsham and
Stalham. We also watched a DVD of the Trussel Trust's work - the organisation behind the first Foodbank in Salisbury which was housed in a garden shed and garage. In the aftermath of the December Storm Surge, the Cromer Foodbank provided almost a ton of food to people in Walcott and surrounds. At our January meeting, Elsa welcomed 14 members, four new members and six visitors. We were also joined by three representatives from the Norfolk WI Federation. Our speaker was Hannah Clarke the local NHS Health Trainer.
Based at the NNDC offices in Cromer, the five health trainers for our area hold free clinics in local doctors' surgeries. They offer help and advice on various health issues including stopping smoking, taking more exercise, healthy eating and reducing alcohol intake. Hannah advised that people can self-refer or can be referred by their GP. So much good, free advice in the form of booklets, charts and DVDs are available from this excellent service. A very enjoyable and informative evening was enjoyed by all and we still, as always, had cake at the end!
Our next meeting is on Wednesday 19 February at 7pm in the upstairs function room of the Kings Arms Hotel in North Walsham. Our speaker will be Gemma Morris of Back in Motion, the Physiotherapy clinic based at the Atrium in North Walsham. North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
With Spring now fast approaching, it is time to make that important decision to get your cat neutered to avoid unwanted pregnancies and having to find homes for the resulting kittens or place them into our care because homes cannot be found (we had 153 kittens in care last year). Obviously it is important that the female cats are neutered but equally so to neuter the males who will travel miles to find an unneutered female and consequently take the risk of being hit by a car on busy roads or contacting FIV or FELV from other unneutered toms. This is born out from our recent experiences as at present we have three cats in care, all male, all with FIV, and all have come into care as strays, although it is obvious they have had homes in the past as they were all very friendly and affectionate. As they have very likely strayed from their original homes in search of females and got into fights with infected cats, they will now all need new indoor homes either as the only cat or with other cats infected with FIV. Bombadier, Jude and Granville are all such lovely cats and if only their owners had got them neutered, perhaps this would not have happened.
Last year, as is usual, we received a grant from our Head Office to pay/help pay for neutering cats where the owner could not afford to, but this had all been spent by April. All help with neutering from May to

December came from branch funds. Although we are happy to help with the cost of neutering (both females - £26, and males - £20) we hope that people who can afford to pay for this will do so. It takes a lot of time and effort to raise money for the branch and we need to ensure the money is spent in an appropriate manner.
Percy - this little black cat with the white medallion is the only one of his litter still in care. He is lovely friendly lad so hopefully will get a home soon.
As I prepared this article I heard from Stephanie that she had just taken in seven cats (a mum and six 9 month old kittens) plus five 4 week old kittens and the next day a further five kittens would be coming into care from another household. If only their owners had got the cats neutered! There is now “no more room at the inn”.
If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.cats.org.uk/northwalsham for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered. If however you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher).
Walking in a Winter Wonderland
Caring for your dog is a year round job, but in the cold weather we need to pay extra attention to the health and wellbeing of our four legged friends. Here’s our top tips on keeping your dog in tip top condition during the winter months:
• Grab your coat and walk off the winter blues. Although you may not feel like going for a walk on dark wintry mornings and evenings, try to maintain a regular routine as the exercise will keep you both, happy, healthy and fit.
• Be seen. Always wear reflective clothing to make yourself visible in the dark. The same applies to your dog; invest in a reflective dog coat, collar or lead.
• Prevent sore paws. Rock salt is used to melt ice on footpaths and may irritate the paw pads, always rinse and dry your dog's feet when you get home to avoid cracked, sore pads.
• Stop snow balls. The fur between the toes should be kept short to avoid uncomfortable snow balls forming when out on a wintery walk.
• Wrap up warm. Older dogs or those with short, fine coats will especially feel the cold; consider keeping them warm in a cosy dog coat.
• Feeling thirsty? Don’t let your dog drink from puddles; they could contain traces of Antifreeze which is poisonous. It smells and tastes good to your dog, but it can be lethal.
• It’s cold outside. Don’t leave your dog out in the garden for long periods of time in cold weather, if it’s too cold for you to sit outside then it’s too cold for them.
• Be safe not sorry. Always consult your Vet if you are concerned about your dog’s health.

RNLI to launch national WW1 touring exhibition featuring inspirational lifeboat rescues The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) is to feature six inspirational lifeboat rescues within its national touring exhibition entitled Hope in the Great War, commemorating the centenary of World War One (WW1). The free-to-attend charity exhibition, funded by Arts Council England, will honour the bravery of RNLI volunteers who risked their lives to save others during WW1 by raising awareness of six relatively unknown heroic lifeboat rescues.
Open to the public from 4 February to 28 February at the RNLI’s Henry Blogg Museum in Cromer, Hope in the Great War will start a 4-year tour of RNLI and other museums and of RNLI lifeboat stations. Hope in the Great War will highlight the extraordinary achievements of ordinary people who volunteered for the RNLI throughout the war years, conveying a sense of hope as many lives were saved at sea by the charity. The exhibition offers an ideal way for families and young children to learn about the work of RNLI volunteers during WW1 and will feature a play area for younger children.
on 9 January 1917.
• The 1914 Whitby RNLI lifeboat rescue of the wrecked hospital ship HMHS Rohilla which saw 144 people saved from the sea.
• Fraserburgh RNLI lifeboat’s rescue of the steamer SS Glenravel which saw 14 people saved from the sea on 8 August 1915.
• RNLI Port Eynon lifeboat’s service to the Dunvegan that took place 1 January 1916.
• The saving of 20 lives from the tanker Ponus on 3 November 1916 by Falmouth RNLI lifeboat crew and service men.
The exhibition was made possible by an Arts Council England grant of £78,200 awarded to the RNLI in order to share more widely the role of the charity’s coastal community volunteers during WW1 to help mark the centenary.
• The rescue of 23 survivors from the SS Alondra which was wrecked on the Kedge Rock off Baltimore on 29 December 1916 by Baltimore volunteers together with two Royal Naval trawlers.
The RNLI has been working with local community groups to create inspirational artworks that interpret their own local lifesaving story. These items, including a giant jigsaw, a podcast and an animation, will be included in the exhibition and allow the fullest story of the rescues to be told nationally, in an interactive and engaging manner.
The lifeboat services to feature within the exhibition include:
• Cromer RNLI lifeboat’s rescue of the Pyrin and Fernebo, which saw 33 people saved from the sea

flamboyant leader Hans-Peter Hofmann and oboist Arco van Zon return for the third time to work with our strings players and also this year, with the Choir. Haydn’s Little Organ Mass, Elgar and Vivaldi will ensure another wonderful concert from this renowned chamber orchestra.
On 7 December a group of young people from Cromer’s Youth Hub visited elderly residents at Halsey House. The British Legion funded care home for ex-forces personnel were delighted to have the group visit on the Saturday morning in their games room. The group of six young people spent time playing board games and swapping winning tips with residents, and getting to know each other. The North Norfolk Youth Hubs project, funded by the county’s Youth Advisory Board, assists young people in having more involvement within their communities. Young people take the lead role in coming up with ideas for projects, and organising themselves so that the activities run smoothly. Youth Worker, Will Mills, said “This project was a fantastic example of how much young people can contribute to their communities. Their energy, ideas and enthusiasm is really inspiring. I’m excited to see what they come up with next.”
Halsey House residents enjoyed the opportunity to spend quality time with young people, and the group are planning another visit in a few weeks’ time. Halsey House will be having some inspiring, regular visitors!
If you or a young person you know aged 13-18 would like to get involved in any of the Youth Hubs in Cromer, Sheringham, Mundesley or Stalham. Then contact the lead Youth Workers Will Mills williammills@map.uk.net 07876 864 281 or Hannah Garrard hannahgarrard@map.uk.net 07876 864 282

NORTH WALSHAM IN BLOOM
North Walsham in Bloom is having to reluctantly withdraw from the annual supply of hanging baskets to all the town traders who have supported us over the years.
The committee have been very grateful for the support we have had and we thank you all very much.
The main reason we have had to take this decision is that over the last two years we have had a basket support collapse each year, the last one very nearly hitting a customer. The hooks we used were not supplied by us, we just used the hooks that were already in place and each year we had a builder check the hooks and issue a report so that we were covered for insurance purposes.
However we have old buildings constructed mostly from soft Norfolk Red Bricks and with baskets weighing virtually 30lbs with the reservoir full, perhaps we were tempting fate to think that these supports would be sufficient. We looked at the possibility of a support replacement programme but the logistics and the cost is beyond our resources.
So what do we plan to do?
We are going to maintain hanging the eight baskets around the Market Cross and the four baskets on the stand further up.
We are investing in five new towers like those outside the church – one to go outside the Post Office to replace an old one removed last year, two to replace the concrete rings at the entrance to the New Road car park, one to go in the centre of the beds at the entrance to the Griffon College site and one to replace the tubs near the Market Cross.
We are also in negotiation with County Highways to add more saddle troughs to the railings outside HSBC.
We are taking over responsibility for the Griffon site beds on Grammar School Road currently under the County Council control but effectively are not.
North Norfolk Social Centre for the Blind
On Thursday 5 December North Norfolk Social Centre for the Blind held its annual Christmas Lunch at the Community Centre. It was almost a full house and we all had a great time. The Ludham Choir came again to sing some carols and everybody joined in. The Christmas Raffle had many prizes donated by local companies. The main prize was a very large hamper followed by a huge amount of voucher, tins of biscuits, a selection of bottled wines and spirits and lots of other prizes. The Committee would like to thank all members for their great support throughout the year and also the local traders who support us. We had a kind donation of £200 from North Walsham and District Round Table, other donations and prizes came in from The Inner Wheel Club of North Walsham, East Coast Plastics, Davenport's Magic Kingdom, Rossis Leisure, Waitrose plc of North Walsham, Tesco plc Stalham, Sainsbury plc North Walsham, Morrisons plc Cromer, Julie Mobray, Photographer Aylsham, Tetley Tea Company, Yorkshire Tea Harrogate, Norwich & Peterborough Building Society, Roys of Wroxham and Andy Grey Electrical. We thank them all.
To continue in this capacity we still need financial support from the public and businesses in the town, so if any of you wish to sponsor a tub (£25 per annum displaying your logo) etc please contact me.
Once again from the North Walsham in Bloom committee thank you for your support so far. We do hope you will be able to support our projects in the future.
On behalf of the North Walsham in Bloom committee by Chris Roberts 01692 402174

Our first meeting of 2014 was an informal one to which members were asked to bring a favourite article or poem to share with the group. The meeting was well attended and we heard a good selection of material.
Our next meeting is on Tuesday 11 February at 2.30 pm in the St Nicholas Room when the Reverend Nigel Paterson will talk about his recent pilgrimage along The Way of Saint James. Visitors and new members are always welcome. For more information please contact Ann Herd on 402705.

Our next meeting will be on Thursday 6 February when we will open up our doors again for another great year of entertainment arranged by a very good committee that keep working to make their members happy.
We would like to take this opportunity to wish all our members and everyone that has helped our club in the past a very Happy and Prosperous New Year. It is not easy raising funds but the support of the local community certainly helps and as a club we are very grateful.
Record Passenger Numbers on Poppy Line
Record passenger numbers last year on the North Norfolk Railway have now been confirmed. The Poppy Line carried 157,800 passengers in 2013, a rise of 6% over 2012 and an all-time record for the line. The previous best was 150,497 in 2011.
General Manager Trevor Eady said "Our volunteers and staff have produced an outstanding result, especially given the year's constraints on disposable income and a weather-hit Spring Gala at the start of the season. Key factors in the performance were an excellent August, and record traffic levels at Day Out With Thomas in May, the summer Steam Gala, and the September '40s Weekend." District Council offices to accommodate County Council Northern Area Children’s Services team
Agreement has been reached for members of Norfolk County Council’s Northern Area Children’s Services team to be accommodated in North Norfolk District Council’s (NNDC) offices in Cromer.
In April, staff from the County Council’s Northern Area Children’s Services team will move from their current office, primarily in North Walsham, to their new base in Cromer.
NNDC Leader Tom FitzPatrick said “This is excellent news for everyone involved. Basing the Northern Area Children’s Services team in Cromer will make it much easier for District and County Council staff to work together for the benefit of vulnerable families living in this part of Norfolk.
“It also makes sound economic sense. The District Council has streamlined its operation to become more efficient at what it does and now employs fewer staff, while continuing to maintain our front-line services, so we have space available in our Cromer offices. We have agreed a 10 year lease with the County Council, at a commercial rent. As well as being good for our residents, this agreement will also be a more efficient use of public assets. We look forward to working more closely with our County Council colleagues at all levels in the future.”
James Joyce, Cabinet Member for Safeguarding Children at Norfolk County Council, said “This is good move which will benefit families in North Norfolk, as it means both councils will be able to work more closely together to support those in need.
“We want to work collaboratively with our partners wherever possible to share resources and make the best use of taxpayers’ money.
“This move will also give staff the opportunity to work in modern, open plan offices, making it easier to share information and work more efficiently.”
Rotarians set a challenge for our future leaders
Rotary International has a long tradition of working with young people. One of the ways it does this is through the Rotary Young Leaders’ or RYLA scheme, a week long ‘outward bound’ courses for young people aged 18-25 who have the potential to become the leaders of the future – in the workplace or in the community setting.
Rotarians in East Anglia organise a week-long programme in late Summer at Grafham Water, near Huntingdon. This year’s dates are August 30 – September 6.
Those who have been part of the scheme, called RYLA, in the past say it is a really fantastic, even life-changing, experience, pushing them emotionally, intellectually and physically to the limit, and enabling them to discover new strengths and skills, and to achieve things they would never have felt they were able to do before the course.
Rotarians from the North Walsham and Broadland Clubs have worked together for some years to sponsor young people to attend and will meet all expenses for suitable candidates.
So if you are a young person aged 18-25 (on 1 September 2014) who is seeking a challenge, and aspires to a leadership role in the future, this may be for you. Equally if you are an employer or teacher and know a young person who would benefit from RYLA, please tell them about RYLA.
You can find out more by downloading an information pack which describes RYLA in full and tells you how to apply at www.nw-rotary.org.uk

Dear Margaret,
It seems staggering that January's cabinet meeting at North Norfolk District Council has been cancelled due to a "lack of business".
Individuals in the Tory administration have privately said much of the key decision making at the council goes on in these meetings, so I'm surprised they have found nothing to talk about at such an important time.
What's worse is that the administration explained on Twitter the decision was made in the middle of December - seemingly days after the floods hit the coastal areas of our district. What sort of message does this send out to the communities wanting more action on flood defences from both council and the government? The council will also shortly decide where the axe will fall for the next round of budget savings - which includes negotiations over our towns CCTV systems - these meetings should be used to give the public an opportunity to have their say before the final decisions are taken.
There is no word on whether allowances will be deducted for the reported shortage of business to deal with. Jono Read, Holt
Happisburgh Lifeboat Station
Happisburgh RNLI Lifeboat Station volunteers had a busy 2013, with seven services for our D-Class, Spirit of Berkhamsted, and five services for our Atlantic, Douglas Paley. The services include swimmers, people on reefs, missing divers, broken down boats and missing dogs. The crew have also helped when the boats were not needed, for a man with head injuries who was treated on the beach until handover to the Air Ambulance.
Looking forward to 2014, Happisburgh RNLI Station will have completed 100 years of continuous service this year; we are planning to mark this milestone so we would be most grateful if anyone has photos or other information on the history of the Station. Please get in contact with the Station, we would like any of the crew from 1965 to also get in contact with us in order to help with our centenary.
On Saturday 1 February we are having a Station Open Day; all welcome to come and meet the crews and see the boats. Station will be open 10am to 4pm.
Happisburgh Lifeboat Annual Dinner Dance & Award Presentation will be held at Sutton Staithe Hotel on Saturday 22 February. Live music by ‘Don’t Ask’, smart dress code please. The evening, including a threecourse meal, is priced at £28.50, tickets available from any of the Stations Crew or phone 01692 583269.

New Vet Centre Opens
North Norfolk’s newest Vet Centre has opened in North Walsham. Independently owned and operated, building work was recently completed and the Centre opened its doors to its first patients.
Toll Barn Veterinary Centre provides modern purpose built premises offering compassionate and knowledgeable veterinary care for pets and exotic animals. With its own large car park, the modern premises have been designed to minimise stress on pets by providing separate waiting areas and wards for dogs, cats and exotic pets,
with spacious facilities for pets needing hospitalisation overnight, and a secure outside dog exercise run. A Diagnostic Imaging Suite including X-Ray and Ultrasound together with in-house laboratory means rapid diagnosis, and two dedicated operating theatres enable early treatment. The high quality care includes 24/7 emergency service for clients.
VIP Clubs for dogs, cats and rabbits are also available, designed to spread the cost of routine pet healthcare.

Owner Faye Bethell said “Whether you have a fish or Great Dane, an exotic bird or reptile, we realise that pets are family members and we are committed to offering high quality care and treatment options. As an independently operated Centre we aim to offer the same vet or nurse for ongoing consultations and treatments ensuring client-vet continuity.”
Faye qualified at the prestigious Royal Veterinary College in London in 2009 and subsequently gained her European GP Certificate in Exotic Animal Practice. Whilst all pets are dealt with at the Centre, Faye has a keen interest in exotic pets and is often found performing dental treatment on rabbits, repairing damaged tortoise shells, treating constipated snakes and egg-bound birds, or performing caesareans on monkeys!
Job cuts puts our coast at risk, argues Labour
North Norfolk Labour Party has criticised the Government over funding cuts which has led to 1,500 jobs being cut from the Environment Agency - weeks after the Prime Minister praised their efforts in North Norfolk. The organisation, which oversees flood and coast protection, is having to deal with government cuts to the Department for the Environment. The local Labour Party believe the move is putting public safety at risk, and have said that more investment in flood and coastal defences is vital, especially as it is predicted Britain will see more bad weather like was witnessed at the end of last year. The move came just weeks after MP Norman Lamb and the Prime Minister visited Wells praising the organisation and promising to do all they could to help communities affected. The Environment Agency issued nearly 7,000 flood alerts and warnings in 2012-13 – the largest number in its history. They are involved in maintaining rivers, deploying sandbags, and giving flooding warnings. Denise Burke, Labour’s Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for North Norfolk, said “Successive governments learned the lessons of the 1953 floods by investing in coastal defences, but that work could be undone by these cuts. Central government must reconsider its decision to cut funding to the Environment Agency and invest appropriately in robust emergency responses as well as fund the costly clear- up operations. Local MPs who supported these cuts are putting cost-cutting ahead of public safety and the economy of North Norfolk. We need collective action through central and local government to protect our communities.”

STAR PAVING SERVICES
North Walsham Table Tennis Baldock-Yaxley Beats Hancock from Two Sets Down
In the first division of the Star Paving Services North Norfolk League, NWSCA’s John Vaughan, Andy Beane and Tom BaldockYaxley hosted Outlaw’s Steve Patterson, Colin Humphries and John Hancock at Antingham Village Hall with Patterson winning a cat and mouse opener against Vaughan in five. Beane won a battle of forehands against Humphries in four before Hancock took the first two sets against Baldock-Yaxley, however the NWSCA player started playing with confidence and made a comeback to take his first win against Hancock 6-11, 4-11, 11-5, 11-9, 11-8. Hancock won his two remaining battles in straight while Baldock-Yaxley went on to complete his maximum by defeating Humphries in four and then edging a tremendous hard hitting contest against Patterson 11-13, 11-6, 13-11, 8-11, 16-14. The final singles saw a very clean win for Vaughan against Humphries in three, while Beane and Baldock-Yaxley won the doubles against Hancock and Patterson 12-10, 12-10, 11-7 to conclude NWSCA’s 7-3 win.
Did you know…
The following week Baldock-Yaxley took a brace but lost a two set lead against Howard Lupton as Specials beat NWSCA 6-4.
The two matches at North Walsham Sports Centre saw both a 10-0 win and a 10-0 loss for the home teams. Gresham’s School As Robin Thaxter, Haken Bennell and Ian Darricott won away to NWSCD. Philip Stone led Bennell by a set and 10-8, but the Gresham’s player took the second 12-10 before winning 11-9 in the fourth. Bennell was also taken the distance thanks to some superb play from Mary Sawyer, but his serves proved decisive as he took the fifth 11-5. Stone also took a set from Darricott, but no more sets were dropped by the League leaders with Thaxter and Bennell winning the doubles against Joe Kirkup and Stone 14-12 in the third to conclude their whitewash. On the adjoining table, NWSCB were the winners against Barracudas. Paul Price and Simon Halliday were consistently in control while Dennis Elliott’s attack proved as deadly as his new shoes proved flashy!
Cricket returned to North Walsham during last summer when Bacton Cricket Club relocated to North Walsham High School?
Having problems with the Parish Council at Bacton, club representatives had no choice but to ask the High School and the Sports Centre, who came to the rescue and an agreement to use the School and Centre facilities was arrived at.
Club chairman Dave Gale said ‘we have been welcomed by both school and sports centre. We now look forward to supplying cricket in the town for all ages and gender’.
