North Walsham Probus Club

Last month members were entertained by a role playing presentation by Elizabeth Scott, playing the part of Kath, Bunty Gotts, as the the ghost, and Bob Scot, as ‘His Lordship’, on domestic life at Blicking Hall in 1938.

As well as being perceived as a trip down memory lane, it is tempting to think of Downton Abbey being revisited. The life of a scullery maid, Kath, was described in a pleasant Norfolk accent. Paid the princely sum of 5/- per week, she was despatched by ‘His Lordship‘ to explain her duties in the hope that by being required to discuss her role she might improve her performance.

Her day began with lighting the fires at six o’clock, and taking the cook a cup of tea after she had laid out her utensils.

Breakfast was served buffet-style and comprised egg, bacon, sausage and ‘kedgeree’. The Hall was largely self sufficient with regard to vegetables which were produced in the gardens, any surplus being sold locally. This included bananas, white peaches and pineapples.

Luncheon for the Lord was either curry or fish and chips. Dinner, a more elaborate meal, commenced with consomme soup. This was prepared by boiling bones the previous day and

later adding meat and vegetables. The gentry were given the liquid but the staff ate the remaining meat and vegetables. The second course was filleted fish with white sauce, followed by beef or chicken.

The latter was described as ‘poulet’ as a gesture of deference to Lady Astor, a frequent visitor, who expressed a wish for the menu to be written in French. However, Kath insisted that it still tasted like chicken! The final course was usually a soufflé.

One of Kath’s last duties was washing up, before she finally retired to bed at ten. Saturday evening was free and also Christmas Day. Boxing Day involved providing refreshments for the annual hunt. Meals were served by footmen, but the kitchen was the strictly the domain of the cook, not even the butler was allowed to enter.

Visitors included the then prime minister, Stanley Baldwin and the late Queen Mary. Kath was happy at the Hall but found the nights occasionally frightening. If one was standing in the Long Gallery a sudden chill would hit the air and the ghost of May Atcher, a former Victorian housekeeper

North Walsham Times 440 February 15th 2014

might brush past. The door flew open to reveal the ghost. Kath gave an entertaining account of a dialogue between the scullery maid and the deceased housekeeper.

Slides of the Hall and its gardens provided a valuable insight into the building and the life of a domestic servant in 1938. While most of us would find it difficult to accept the conditions described the presentation reflected a pride and love of Blickling Hall.

The next meeting is on the 26 February when we shall be pleased to welcome new members Ted Gadsden

North Walsham Times 440 February 15th 2014

With spring poised to fully launch herself upon us, it's a great time of year for the beautiful fresh fish that this coastline is rightly famous for. My pan-fried seabass is always amazingly popular but of course pan-frying is perfect for many different types of fish, including these incredibly tasty mackerel fillets.

We're doing a lot of work in the garden at the moment as we gear up for our debut season of glamping – glamorous camping – which we are hosting at the Grove for 2014 and is extremely exciting. We are working alongside Magical Camping who will be providing vintage Victorian bell tents – a throwback to the past when John and Ann Graveling used to hold many a summer camp on the field. Please get

Pan-fried Mackerel, Chorizo-braised Leeks and Shallot Crisps

in touch with us if you fancy a glamp this summer!

And don't forget Mother's Day is coming up at the end of March!

I look forward to seeing you then, if not before. Best wishes, Charlie INGREDIENTS 2 mackerel fillets (scored) 25g unsalted butter 1 large leek cut into 1cm slices 150g of chorizo sausage with skin removed and sliced 3 ½ tsp of warm chicken stock ½ tsp of smoked paprika 2 banana shallots peeled and sliced into rings 1 tsp of plain flour 250ml of rape seed oil in (crushed foods). Cold pressed 1 tsp of Maldon sea salt

METHOD 1) Heat butter in a pan, when butter is foaming, add leeks and season with half the salt. Fry for 3-4 mins, until softened and golden brown. 2) Add chorizo and smoked paprika and continue to fry for 4-5 mins stirring occasionally until chorizo has browned. 3) Add stock, and bring to simmer. Continue to simmer for 3-4 mins, until majority of liquid has evaporated. 4) With shallots heat 250ml oil in a deep sided pan, dredge the shallots in flour, fry shallots in oil until crisp- remove from oil and drain on kitchen towel. 5) Pan fry the mackerel fillet for 3-4 mins skin side down, and allow to cook through, remove pan from heat and turn fillets to continue to cook on residual heat of 2-3 mins. To serve - Spoon leek and chorizo mixture into centre of two large plates with two mackerel fillets on each plate.

Can Any Song Be Played On 4 Strings?

Not many bands feature seven musicians all playing the same instrument. But D’Ukes manage to play music ranging from Amy Whitehouse to the Zutons via Deep Purple and Beethoven all on different types of Ukulele with a hint of percussion! As D’Ukes say “If it’s a good song we will take it apart, rebuild it and uke it up”

D’Ukes perform at venues around London and the south of England at theatres, festivals, pubs, special events and private functions. They have appeared on TV and radio and in 2013 were invited to Prague to headline the 1st ever Czech Republic ukulele festival. Tickets for the 7.30pm show are priced at £10 and are now on sale from the Maddermarket Theatre Box Office on 01603 620917 or on-line at www.maddermarket.co.uk For more information about D’Ukes visit their website www.d-ukes.co.uk

£2 50 OF F

And the good news is that they are coming to Norwich! The Maddermarket Theatre to be precise on Thursday 6 March. “This will be the band’s first trip to Norwich” said John Mattock, the band’s bass ukulele player “and the show will kick off our March theatre tour” he added.

The band first saw the light of day in 2009 emerging from a regular ukulele pub jam session. They have since become one of the country's top ukulele bands specialising in loud, electric, danceable music and have taken the ukulele to new levels of performance.

Ever thought of trying Swing and Lindyhop, or even Argentine Tango? Classes start on the 24th for Jango (a blend of Argentine Tango and Modern Jive) at the Methodist Hall North Walsham 10-11am on the 24th February and Swing and Lindyhop at St Benet's Hall North Walsham on the 27th February at 8pm. These classes promise to be fun and, of course, there's no need to bring a partner, although it does help!

Jango is a slow, gentle, flowing class, with the patterns of Argentine Tango and the uncomplicated simplicity of Modern Jive... Feel yourself taken up by the passion and presence of Argentine Tango, but in a simple form. This dance is suitable to dance anywhere. Swing and Lindyhop came about with the transition from the age of Jazz to the age of Swing. Lindyhop was actually born in the Savoy Ballroom Harlem and was derived from the Charleston, originally being a "Mickey take" of the way that Europeans and Euro-Americans danced. Swing can be danced by all ages, it’s fun and social and you will soon be able to look as if you know what you are doing on the floor, or completely WOW everyone (and possibly yourselves) in no time at all! Both classes are suitable for absolute beginners and experienced dancers alike, and run for a six week course each, at special rates. The Jango class is at the moment a daytime class and Swing an evening class. Steve, your Instructor, is a full member of the I.D.T.A. UKA. GPTD. and BDM and an ex professional actor

Booking for both sessions is advisable, but you don't have to pay up-front for classes, just come along and enjoy and pay-as-you-go.

Non-surgical option for treatment of varicose veins

Coltishall Clinic is pleased to announce a treatment program for varicose veins. Endovenous laser therapy is a quick, minimally invasive alternative to traditional vein stripping.

Endovenous laser therapy is a relatively new outpatient treatment that can be performed under local anaesthesia in less than an hour. Varicose veins occur when the vein is not functioning properly to return blood from the lower leg to the heart. Each vein has a series of valves that open to allow the flow of blood to the heart, and close to prevent backflow (otherwise known as “reflux”) of blood back into the foot. The walls and valves of veins are thin and elastic, and can stretch due to a variety of conditions including pregnancy, heredity injuries, inflammation and age.

Approximately half of the population has some form of venous disease, and varicose veins affect about one out of two people age 50

and older, and 1525% of all adults.

Previously, treatment of painful, swollen varicose veins required a surgical procedure called vein stripping, where the vein was completely removed from the leg.

More recently, endovenous laser therapy has been developed. Bulging varicose veins in the lower leg are usually caused by a faulty valve located higher in the leg that can’t be seen at the surface.

The endovenous laser therapy treats the source of the problem, which then causes the varicose vein in the lower leg to shrink and disappear. “SPEECH! SPEECH!” How often have you been in a situation where

Endovenous laser therapy involves the

insertion of an ultrasound-guided laser fibre directly into the incompetent great or short saphenous vein. Laser energy heats the vein from within, causing it to shrink, collapse and seal shut. Patients experience minimal discomfort, and they can return to normal activities the same day. Because there are many veins in the leg, the blood that would have flowed through the closed vein simply flows through other healthy veins after the laser therapy.

Coltishall Clinic also offers sclerotherapy and lasers to treat leftover spider veins.

THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER SWEET PEAS

one, two or three blooms at most, small and on a modest, slender stem, and of maroon colour with bluish purple wings it had one redeeming feature, however, a captivating perfume.

Sweet peas in all their glory

The Sweet Pea has been called the ‘Queen of Annuals’. Its attractive blooms, brilliant range of colours and captivating perfume make it a favourite flower but it is delicate and ephemeral and it is not easy to find bunches of sweet peas for sale. The answer is of course to grow them in the garden and with a little care long stemmed flowers can be picked over a long season.

We can be fairly certain that seeds first arrived in England in 1699, sent to Dr Robert Uvedale, a schoolmaster at Enfield, Middlesex, by one Franciscus Cupani, a monk living in Sicily. As someone who was educated in Enfield and was in Uvedale House at the grammar school I guess I was fated to love sweet peas! The flowers of the 17th century were mean things compared with modern standards, probably

• Push the seeds in to about an inch below the surface of dampened multipurpose compost.

• As the plants grow tie them into the frame and if your soil is light and poor feed them with a general fertiliser.

Now you can let the plants get on with producing lots and lots of flowers, and all you have to do is to keep picking and deadheading.

If you want to see Sweet Peas grown to perfection I can recommend a visit to the horticultural tent at the Royal Norfolk Show at the end of June.

Changing of the Guard... Full Steam Ahead as St. Nick’s Heads into 2014 St Nicholas House Prep School and Little Nick’s Nursery, located in North Walsham, starts the New Year with a new Headmaster, Mr Martin Castle, an experienced teacher having worked in the UK independent sector for over 30 years. In his teaching career, he has acquired a knowledge of Early Years through to GCSE but considers teaching young children to be the most rewarding and privileged aspect of his career.

He will be supported by the new owners and School Directors, Paul and Julie Grisewood, who have chosen to settle in Norfolk with their young family after 23 years experience in independent schools. It was over sixty years ago that a group of North Walsham families set up their own school. For some children, their parents and grandparents have been nurtured at St. Nicholas House before them.

Under the leadership of Craig Wardle, headmaster for ten years since 2003, St. Nick’s has thrived and his dedication to the school will be fondly remembered. With the advent a new Head and under new ownership the future

Little Nick’s Nursery offers warm, responsive care in a separate, specially designed unit. Recently approved to accept children from age two, it accepts Nursery vouchers and offers flexible hours to suit, funding guidance and free ‘taster’ sessions to reassure parents. There is no commitment to the main school.

Mr Castle commented that “St Nicholas House School occupies a ‘niche’ position, offering parents a realistically priced option, an excellent and affordable all-round education, access to a values based education in a school with similar values and beliefs to those of the family, good facilities, small class sizes and flexibility.” He concluded, “Education, and particularly an independent education, is the greatest gift you can give your child and, contrary to perception, at St. Nick’s it is affordable.”

Our December meeting was held at the North Walsham Garden centre, where we had a Christmas lunch at the Rambler’s Restaurant. This was a most enjoyable event. In January we meet at the home of Inner Wheel member, Barbara Hankin. In the past, to celebrate Inner Wheel day, we have all made cakes to distribute to the recipients of ‘Meals on Wheels’. This year we have contributed to a collection for the North Walsham Hospital. One of our members had recently been a patient there and could not praise it highly enough. After refreshments, Barbara gave us a very interesting talk about her collection of unusual items. We were shown a Chatelaine for holding scissors, needles, notebook and most importantly keys – usually kept by the housekeeper. There was a chain purse and a 19th century “Pennylick” or “Hokey-Pokey”, a small glass used for selling ice-cream. This was banned in 1899 as it was deemed to be unhygienic because it was not washed between customers. There was a 1905 Swedish commemoration cheese spoon for the wedding of the Crown Prince, a wooden knitting sheaf from 1902, made by prisoners of war held in Ceylon and a “Judy” doll from a late 19th century “Punch and Judy”. Amongst her interesting coins was an 1819 Obel – from the Ionian Islands, a Thomas Payne Middlesex farthing and a Victorian ½ farthing. There was also a Medallion from Queen Victoria’s Jubilee and amongst other things a Tippet (fur collar) from 1911, a wooden implement to keep a bowler or top hat in shape, an 1830 Royal truncheon, a hymn tuber pitch pipe, 19th century glass Christmas tree decorations and a pair of chairs, used at the June 1911 Coronation of George V, by the Honourable J Wood Esq., MP and Mrs Wood. After a fun time guessing the uses of some of the artefacts, we closed the meeting. Stella Hunter Club Correspondent – Inner Wheel Club of North Walsham North Walsham Times 440 February 15th 2014

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Cats come into our care for very many reasons but for every one of them it is a stressful situation (even for the most laid back cats). They come into care and are confined in our cat pens to be cared for by complete strangers. Most take a few days to settle but some can take longer - it depends on the cat. At this stage it is important that we do not put extra pressure on them by trying to force contact. Talking quietly to them while we clean their pens without making any effort to touch them will help them to gain confidence and learn to trust people. The more timid cats may need a place to hide should they feel threatened and this can be provided by a cardboard box. For some cats, visits from people coming to offer them a new home can also be challenging and they may not react positively and let people see what delightful companions they will make. Very often a cat with a lovely temperament will be overlooked for this reason although, obviously, they eventually find a new home with someone who can sense their potential as a loving pet. The same applies when a cat goes to its new home. Again, there is a potentially stressful situation with new surroundings and, now, a much larger area to explore. Although some cats do settle in straight away it is best to assume this will not always be the case and to give the cat several weeks to adjust. We advise new owners to provide a quiet area where the cat can hide as this will help it to feel safe and secure in its new surroundings. Confining it to one room to begin with and gradually introducing other areas it will have access to, will also help it to settle. It is important not to force contact on the cat and expect it to settle and accept fuss straight away as this can make the cat feel threatened. Some cats will not eat or use their litter tray when they first arrive and this is not unusual but you do sometimes wonder how long they can “keep their legs crossed”. The cat needs time to adapt to its new surrounding (sometimes this also includes adapting to new companion animals) in a similar way as people when they start a new job, go to a new school or

join a new club. If people do have any concerns Stephanie will be only to happy to discuss how to successfully work through this period of adjustment for both owner and cat. If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give a call on 01692 535858.

Alternatively you can visit www.cats.org.uk/northwalsham Liquorice, lovely little mum for a description and photographs of who loves to play now that her the cats before giving us a call on kittens no longer need her the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered. Match Report - Cardiff City v Norwich City

Norwich started brightly, with Robert Snodgrass scoring in the first five minutes. Early on Cardiff are making to many unforced errors with Norwich passing the ball around comfortably. Cardiff start putting more pressure on Norwich going close a few times. Wittingham has a free kick on the edge of the box but blasts it well over the bar. Johnson has a good chance but gets deflected over the bar. In the 38th minute Wilfred Zaha comes on to make his debut for Cardiff City. Zaha plays well when he comes on, giving the game a bit more life. Snodgrass has a shot early on in the second half but is also deflected over the bar from a corner. Craig Bellamy scores a great goal in the bottom right hand corner. Cardiff get a corner a minute after their goal, then Kenywne Jones hitting the post from the header then scoring on the rebound to make it 2-1. Bellamy goes down in the box but no penalty. Marshall with a wonder save then Bellamy cleared the ball of the line. Cardiff scrape the win after hanging on for most of the second half. Thomas Wardle & Jake Woolston

Police warning after two arrested

Senior officers are re-issuing their warning to residents to be vigilant around a credit card scam where offenders attempt to get victims to hand over their money after two men were arrested in Norfolk. In a recent incident in Terrington, a victim had been persuaded to give their PIN number over the phone and then told that their credit cards would later be collected by a taxi. Two men, aged 18 and 19 and from the London area, were arrested on suspicion of committing fraud by false representation and have since been released on police bail. T/Chief Superintendent Nick Davison, Head of Norfolk's County Policing Command, gave the following warning: "We are advising residents to remain vigilant and to spread the word and raise awareness of these types of crimes, particularly amongst vulnerable and elderly people. Residents should remember the following: • Your bank, credit card company or the police will never ask for your PIN, bank card or bank account details over the phone – never give these details out. • The police will never call you and ask you to withdraw money from your account to give to a courier or taxi driver, regardless of how convincing they may seem. • If you receive such a call leave the landline for at least five minutes to make an outside call. Fraudsters will keep the line open and have been known to play ring tones, hold music and a recorded message down the phone so the victim believes they are making a call to a legitigate number. • Use a friend’s or neighbour’s telephone instead. • Friends, family, carers and neighbours are asked to spread the word to ensure everyone is aware of this scam and what they should do.” Anyone who believes they have been a victim of fraud should contact police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

More North Norfolk communities

to benefit from District Council’s Big Society Fund

North Norfolk District Council’s (NNDC) Big Society Fund Panel met recently to consider the latest grant applications.

The Panel awarded conditional grant funding totalling £44,186.10 to seven community projects across North Norfolk.

Successful applications include North Walsham Rugby Football Club, which was awarded £12,500 to improve club facilities for the benefit of players and spectators, as well as for the wider community to use the club for social and community events.

Antingham Village Hall Committee was awarded funding of £2,000 to install double glazed windows at the hall. This will both reduce running costs and help ensure the sustainability of this valued community facility.

A grant of £3,287.90 was awarded to Fakenham and District Light Operatic Society, which is run by volunteers and offers community theatre and entertainment in Fakenham, Wells and surrounding villages, towards the purchase of portable theatrical lighting. No longer having to hire theatrical lighting will reduce production costs and enable the Society, which particularly welcomes and supports the involvement of people with additional needs, to increase the number, type and location of its productions. West Runton Scout Group was awarded

£10,000 towards a project to extend and improve the facilities at the scout hall. This will benefit local and visiting scout groups and enable greater use of the hall by the wider community.

As well as the grant awards from the Big Society Fund, conditional funding has also been approved by NNDC Cabinet for projects through the Council’s Enabling Fund.

Early Bird Discount for CHORAL WORKSHOP with COMPOSER PATRICK HAWES

To commemorate the centenary of the First World War in 2014 Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society has commissioned the internationally acclaimed composer, Patrick Hawes, to write a major new choral and orchestral work for adult and children’s choirs and soprano soloist. Prior to the premiere Patrick Hawes will present a workshop at the Auden Theatre Holt on Saturday 17 May 2014 entitled “A composer’s insight into setting words to music”. HIGHWAYS – the Town Council has put in a grant bid to the County Council through the Parish Partnership Scheme for a height reactive sign to warn HGV drivers approaching the Cromer Road railway bridge that the vehicle is too high and they should turn right into Greens Road, to avoid further mishaps at the bridge. A traffic speed warning sign has also been included in the bid.

ACORN ROAD PLAY AREA - The Town Council approved the provision of a litter bin for the new toddler play area. The District Council to be responsible for the future maintenance and emptying.

NORFOLK CAB - the Town Council approved £2,000 part grant to be released to Norfolk CAB and agreed to ask the District Council to arrange a meeting with Norfolk CAB, Fakenham and North Walsham Town Councils and the District Council to forge a way forward to keep the North Walsham office open.

TOWN TEAM - It was reported that the Easter Bunny project had been postponed for the time being either until Easter 2015 or an idea around Christmas. There had been insufficient interest due to the floods at Walcott.

TOWN CRIER - the Town Council approved a request from Norfolk Hospice Tapping House for Roger Hopkinson, Town Crier, to take part in a fund raising event on 6th March in Norwich.

BITTERN LINE - Following a letter from the Town Council, supporting the Bittern Line Partnership’s request for the late train from Norwich to Sheringham being delayed by a further 20 minutes to allow people attending theatre/cinema to travel by train, a letter was submitted from Greater Anglia stating that it would not be possible at the present time due to the short time available to clean the carriages in readiness for the next day. It was agreed to send a letter expressing the Council’s great disappointment and stating that the rail service should be operated in a way which the people of this town require and not what the rail company wants.

TOWN MEETING - The Town meeting will be held on Tuesday, 1st April, 2014 in the Community Centre, New Road, North Walsham at 7.30 p.m. Save the date! More information next edition.

TOWN CLERK - Due to the retirement of Mrs. Margaret Foster, the Town Council has appointed Mr. Nick Clancy as her successor.

MESSAGE FROM THE OUTGOING CLERK I would like to thank everyone who has supported me during my 16½ years as Town Clerk. I have thoroughly enjoyed the work and it is with reluctance that I retire but it is time for me to catch up on the things which have been on the back burner for a long time. I wish Nick every success and hope he will enjoy the job as much as I have. Margaret Foster

Dear Margaret,

Due to a change in my health I find myself having to use one of these infernal shopping buggies. I suffer from COPD and as a result I am unable to walk far. My buggy is small compared to some so I can get right into shops. I must say I have been very pleasantly surprised at how helpful 99% of North Walsham’s shop users are. People get out of your way (please be careful, don’t step into the road!) rush to open doors or just hold them open for you, ask if they can help. It’s truly wonderful, thanks to you all. However the other 1% that without thought or care park their cars illegally out of the designated area in the Market Place (on the right not the left) are a real pain and even more so those who park across a dropped kerb that is there so that the disabled and mums with prams can get off the kerbs safely. This is against the law even without the no parking restrictions and applies to ALL dropped kerbs including those outside houses etc. READ the Highway Code. A large fine can be levelled at you. And please don’t say, as one young lady said to me after I told her she should not be there, ‘but I had to park there because… ’- no you don’t have to park there, you should not be parked there at all.

The final thing to add insult to injury was the black Mercedes a few weeks back that was parked across the dropped kerb AND had a Disabled Blue badge on display! Really? The same also goes for the dropped kerb outside Paston Surgery in Park Lane, please have some thought for others. I will have my camera with me in future. North Walsham Table Tennis Four Deuce Sets as Matt Beats Tom

In the first division, Shark’s Chris Marshall and Steve and Matt Hudson hosted NWSCA’s Andy Beane, Tom Baldock-Yaxley and Phil Mole. Matt Hudson was full of confidence as he ground out a tight 12-10, 10-12, 14-12, 10-12, 11-7 win against Baldock-Yaxley. Mole was playing up a division but took a brace with wins in four and five against Marshall and Steve Hudson respectively before losing to Matt Hudson in four. Beane took a maximum, Baldock-Yaxley a brace and the pair won the doubles 12-10 in the fifth against Marshall and Matt Hudson to conclude NWSCA’s 8-2 win. NWSCB’s Dennis Elliott, Paul Price and Simon Halliday hosted Backhander’s Teucer Wilson, Whil De Neve and Paul Warner. The final singles saw Elliott get past some fine defence to beat De Neve in four and set up a pivotal doubles with the hosts 5-4 up. Previously the doubles had seen NWSCB miss a match point as the reverse fixture ended in a draw; this time Halliday and Price literally left it to the last minute to start playing as they came back from the dead in the fourth, saved two match-points and beat Wilson and De

Neve 11-2 in the fifth to win the match this time 6-4. On the adjoining table at the Sports Centre, Chris Johnson stepped into the injured Mary Sawyer’s shoes as he joined NWSCD’s Joe Kirkup and Philip Stone to host Outlaws. Kirkup took a terrific brace and joined Stone for a doubles win, but a maximum from Colin Humphries was key in Outlaw’s 7-3 win.

In the second division at Cromer Tennis Club, the best was saved for the final three battles as Crosscourt’s John Welsh, Derek Sidaway and Wren Thatcher hosted NWSCC’s Chris Johnson, Phil Mole and James Morter. Morter had just defeated Sidaway in four and with Welsh taking a brace but the remaining games going to the visitors, NWSCC led 5-2. Thatcher recovered from two sets down against Johnson to keep Crosscourts in the match before Mole led Welsh by two sets. The Crosscourter forced a decider, but Mole won the fifth 12-10 to seal the match for the visitors – a five set doubles win for Johnson and Mole over Welsh and Sidaway then concluded NWSCC’s 7-3 win. Meanwhile, Poacher’s John Hancock (Snr) and Andy and Laura Marsh hosted NWSCE’s Stan

Baldock, Richard Porritt and Edna Stone at Hunworth Village Hall. Porritt was returning from a shoulder injury that has kept him out of the game and has transferred to the second division team and picked up a single against Laura Marsh, as did Stone who won a terrific five-setter. Dogged determination from Hancock saw him beat both Stone and Porritt – the latter from two sets down – and with Andy Marsh in full flow, Poachers won 8-2.

Finally the Handicap Cups have got underway and with eighteen teams in each Competition, four teams were the unlucky ones drawn to face a preliminary tie in order to secure a spot in the last sixteen. NWSCA and NWSCB found themselves in this position but came through unscathed as NWSCA beat LCC 6-0 in the doubles and NWSCB won the singles against Aylsham C 6-3 (the three losses coming after they took an unassailable 6-0 lead).
