Your Choice Social Centre at the Norfolk Care Awards
Covering North Walsham, Aylsham and surrounding villages in association with the Cromer Times and Sheringham Independent
Your Choice Social Centre in North Walsham was nominated for the 'Outstanding Achievement' award at the Norfolk Care Awards, along with 16 other companies and were delighted to be shortlisted to the last four, thereby receiving an invitation to the awards ceremony hosted by television favourite Helen Lederer.
Representatives were both shocked and stunned when the announcement was made that the Centre had in fact won the award presented by Norman Lamb - a very proud moment in only their second year.
Your Choice was set up due to another local care provider choosing to close a previous centre that Your Choice owners Paul Goldsmith and Paul Scott worked at. The closure meant that ten people with learning disabilities had no centre to use within the immediate locality and so the two Pauls decided to throw caution to the wind and open something in its place. They used just some small redundancy payments to fund the project and managed to have the new centre operational in just three weeks.
Their hard work, determination and dedication to giving the members of the centre an environment that they could feel at home in and be a real part of was quickly rewarded when existing members wanted to increase their time at the centre and new members began joining. Your Choice Social Centre at the Norfolk Care Awards
Continued from front cover... As a result the company has been able to employ nine staff and expand the unit to enable them to offer even more to those that attend.
They have a philosophy that the centre should be flexible and that the choice of the members drives what is offered therefore creating a resource that each and every member can find things that interest and benefit them.
The award comes just after a lot of time and effort has been put into developing the new side to the centre which consists of an indoor garden area, member led cafe and tuck shop, a pamper room, woodwork centre, shower room and even an adult sized bouncy castle.
The two Pauls are elated to have won the award and accepted it gracefully on behalf of the entire team.
Paul Goldsmith’s speech upon accepting was 'We are all so lucky to do the jobs we do, so lucky to be able to be part of the lives of the people we all in this room come into contact with. Paul and I are really just two support workers who are passionate about benefiting others life so to receive an award for doing what we love is totally humbling'.

The February meeting commenced with the singing of Jerusalem. President Kim welcomed Maggie Gallop the Denman representative to the meeting, and with the aid of slides she treated us to a detailed interesting insight to Denman the WI's own College. Some members present had been on various courses and several had attended more than once but all agreed that it was a fantastic experience and that the tuition was excellent. As a member who has not ever experienced Denman it has now going onto my ‘to do list’, the only problem will be choosing from the many exciting courses available. Stephanie gave the vote of thanks with a few words on her recent enjoyable Denman trip. The Group meeting is being held at the Community Centre on 18 March - tickets are £3 - Neil Storey is the speaker (The Tommy on the Western Front 1st World War) The Darts group continues to meet Monday evenings at the Sports Centre just for fun at the moment until the league starts in April. Margaret Bane advised that they were also hoping to restart the ten-pin bowling sessions and any member who is interested should let her know. Our next meeting is our 48th birthday celebration and a musical entertainment performance by Mrs Pam Warren and Friends. As it is our birthday, the competition on the night is a greeting card. We meet on the second Wednesday of the month and we are now installed into our new venue at The St. Nicholas Room (this is accessed through the main St Benet Hall door. and the start time is now 7.30pm. A warm welcome is given to all so why not come and give us a try. Please contact Kim Reynolds for details on 01692 406246

Happisburgh Lifeboat Station
Happisburgh RNLI Lifeboat Station volunteers have been updating their First Aid skills with a trainer from Poole. This has included the introduction of new drugs to be used, along with a new stretcher to be carried on both boats. After an evening in the classroom the crew took the new stretchers to sea and put them through their paces.
The 100 years of continuous service, which is being marked this year, will be happening in early July 2014 - watch this space for the date. We would be most grateful if anyone has photos or other information on the history of Happisburgh Lifeboat Station to get in contact with us. Also we would love to hear from any of the crew from 1965 onwards in order to help with our centenary.
Two members of the station have been given awards by the RNLI, Cedric Cox who joined the Crew in 1967 and then became Lifeboat Operations Manager in 1992 has been awarded the RNLI’s Gold Badge and Dawn Phenix, who is the Station Administration Officer and head of Fundraising has been awarded Thanks on Velum for all her work at the station.

News from the White Horse Overstrand with Head Chef Nathan Boon
What a busy start to the year! We have had a wonderful response to our Theme Nights which give our patrons a chance to try something just a little different. Amongst the themes on offer are Seafood, Asian, Steak, Dingly Dell Sausage, Italian and Burger Nights. I am delight to announce that we have extended the 2 for 1 until the end of March. Mothers Day is already beginning to book so my advice is to call in and book a table as soon as possible, it is such a great day and it would be a shame not to be able to treat Mum.
We have also introduced an exciting range of lunchtime sandwiches ideal with a pint of real ale or a cup of coffee. Why not meet with friends and choice a selection and share them around? Served with a Greek Salad and Handcut Chips for just £7.50 its a nice way of passing a lunchtime. Choose from Sausage Bap, Emmental Cheese, Red Onion Jam and BBQ Sauce, ‘Whites’ Club; Smoked Chicken,
Griddled Bacon, Beetroot Relish, Aioli and Wild Rocket, Fish Finger, Tartare Sauce with Pickled Cucumber, Beef Tomatoes, Binham Blue, Balsamic Shallots and Baby Basil. Don’t forget our great Sunday Roasts served each week until 3pm.

North Norfolk Social Centre for the Blind
The Club met on Thursday 6 February at the Community Centre when it was great to see all the old faces again after the long Christmas and New Year break. It must seem a long time for some who are unable to get out of the house because of commitments - a break once a month to come to the club is something to look forward to and members certainly have a good time!
We were entertained this month by the Den Barrie Duo who always turn up to sing us a medley of 50s and 60s songs. They are a great duo and have been entertaining the Club for quite some time now and members look forward to seeing them.

The club received several donations in 2013 - if we missed anybody in the last issue please accept our belated thanks for all the donations. We would also like to say a big thank you to the kind lady that came to the club on Thursday and donated a large bag of copper change - it was a wonderful surprise.
Our fundraising at the Club brought in a total of £67.50, the raffle made £45 and the remainder was from the secondhand clothes stall.
One of our tables at the Club seats about eight people who are now in their 90s - what stories they can tell about their lives! What a wonderful achievement to have reached that age and still look great.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
A recent article highlighted the importance of getting cats neutered not only to prevent unwanted kittens but also the spread of FIV and FELV. At the time of writing we had three FIV positive cats in care, one of which has been re-homed and another with a possible home.
veterinary department notes and guidelines indicate that on average just one third of a litter will test positive so we are hopeful that the results for the older kittens all come back negative, if mum was infected prior to having the last litter, and that very few if any of the remaining young kittens test positive.
In the same article I mentioned the 17 cats taken in from two households. The five kittens which came in from the second household Sykes, nice gentle little boy, one of our have now left for new homes after receiving a clean bill of health from older kittens looking for a loving home If you are looking for a our vet, being chipped and also having their first vaccination. The care cat or kitten please give a of the cats from the second household was split between Stephanie and call Stephanie on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit one of our other fosterers and all appeared to be well at first. The six www.cats.org.uk/northwalsham for a description and photographs older kittens were neutered, chipped and vaccinated with one being of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out blood tested to check for FIV/FELV and we were pleased when this where any particular cat is being fostered. came back negative. One of the younger kittens however gave Stephanie grave concerns from the outset and sadly she had to be put to sleep on If however you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten her second visit to the vets as she had meningitis. Mum, Guiness, had please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). already been booked to be neutered and blood tested to rule out possible problems with the kittens before this occurred but, unfortunately, her tests came back positive for FIV so she now needs a loving new “indoor home”. Although all the other kittens are very healthy and lively they will all need to be tested too. We know that one of the older kittens has tested negative but need to check the others too so that if their tests are positive they are re-homed as indoor cats. The same applies to the four younger kittens On 15th March we will be holding an OPEN AFTERNOON at although they will have to wait until our new surgery at Weybourne Road in Sheringham. they are 12 weeks old before testing.
OPEN Afternoon
This is the first time we have had a FIV positive mum in care and a new and expensive experience for us. Our
Mothers' Union
We welcomed the Reverend Nigel Paterson to our February meeting when he showed slides and spoke of his 34 day pilgrimage along the Camino de Santiago (Way of Saint James) in Northern Spain.
The starting point takes travellers over the Pyrenees following the scallop shell, which has long been the symbol of the Camino de Santiago, guiding pilgrims on their way. Nigel tried to walk between 15 and 25 miles each day, depending on how he was feeling.
Sometimes walking with other pilgrims and other times alone, catching up with other walkers at the various hostels that he stayed at. Each traveller carries a 'pilgrim's passport', giving access to inexpensive and sometimes free accommodation. The passport is stamped with the official St James stamp at each resting place and serves as a reminder of the journey. A 'certificate of accomplishment' is presented to each pilgrim on completion of the pilgrimage and a memorable Pilgrim's Mass is held in the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela.
Between 2 pm and 4 pm you have a chance to look behind the scenes at the Operating Theatre, Digital X-ray suite and our in house Laboratory. There will be a chance to look round Hector the whole premises, including the separate cat and dog wards, isolation unit and even see some of the equipment in action.
Footsie
You can also have a chat with the vets, nurses & receptionists over a cup of tea and a piece of cake.
Don’t forget to claim your free gift when you visit.
Local photographer Andy Langley will be at the surgery on the day taking pet portrait photographs.

Better Care for Mental Health Crisis A new agreement between police and the NHS seeks to improve mental health crisis care.
Emergency support for people in mental health crisis is set to see dramatic improvements across the country as part of a far-reaching new agreement between police, mental health trusts and paramedics.
The agreement – called the Crisis Care Concordat – has been signed by more than 20 national organisations in a bid to drive up standards of care for people experiencing crisis such as suicidal thoughts or significant anxiety.
The Concordat, announced by Care and Support Minister Norman Lamb, will help cut the numbers of people detained inappropriately in police cells and drive out the variation in standards across the country.
Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg said ‘A mental health crisis can already be distressing for individuals and all those involved, but when people aren’t getting the right support or care it can have very serious consequences. It’s unacceptable that there are incidents where young people and even children can end up in a police cell because the right mental health service isn’t available to them. That’s why we’re taking action across the country and across organisations to make sure those with mental health problems are receiving the emergency care they need. We want to build a fairer society – one where mental health is as important as physical health
– and the Crisis Care Concordat is an important step towards addressing this disparity.’
The concordat, which has already been signed by 22 organisations including NHS England, the Association of Chief Police Officers and the Royal College of Psychiatrists, sets out the standards of care people should expect if they suffer a mental health crisis and details how the emergency services should respond.
It challenges local services to make sure beds are always available for people who need them urgently and also that police custody should never be used just because mental health services are not available. It also stipulates that police vehicles should not be used to transfer patients between hospitals and encourages services to get better at sharing essential need-to-know information about patients which could help keep them and the public safe.
Norman Lamb, Care and Support Minister, said ‘When someone has a mental health crisis, it is distressing and frightening for them as well as the people around them. Urgent and compassionate care in a safe place is essential – a police cell should never need to be used because mental health services are not available. For me, crisis care is the most stark example of the lack of equality between mental and physical health. The NHS and police already work well together in some areas, but
it is totally unacceptable that crisis mental health care is so variable across the country. It is imperative that all areas seek to implement the principles of the Concordat as quickly as possible to ensure consistent care, no matter where you live. Better care for people in mental health crises will not only help those living through their darkest hours to recover – it can also save lives.’
Local areas will now sign their own regional and local agreements to commit to working together across services to improve care and potentially save lives.
The Crisis Care Concordat challenges local areas to make sure that: • Health-based places of safety and beds are available 24/7 in case someone experiences a mental health crisis

One Hundred Years of North Walsham
2014 is a very important year, being 100 years from the outbreak of World War 1. Much has changed over those 100 years, and whilst remembering those who fought in that and subsequent wars, we at Saint Nicholas would like you to join us in marking this in a very special way.
We are hosting a 100 Year Celebration from 7th to 9th June for all those who live and work in our parish and are inviting business and organisations to play a part by providing a display.
We hope that this event will both celebrate the accomplishments of the past 100 years, and express the diversity of our community life. By drawing people to our beautiful medieval church, we hope to raise awareness of the central place the church holds in our town and how working together we can be proud of our town. There will be no charge for people to view the displays but there will be an opportunity for visitors to donate to our tower appeal.
Displays can be floral or made of other items to portray any aspect from the past 100 years. It might be linked to a specific date or decade of interest or importance to you and your organisation, or it might span part of, or the whole 100 year period. It can include information about your purpose and if you wish will act as an advert to promote your activities. Each display will have a small card (to be supplied), on which you will write your name and contact details and also one line describing your aims.
Please register your interest and more details will be sent to you by the first week of April. Please contact Nancy Heywood, Churchwarden 01603 782407 or the Parish Office 01692 408971 giving your name and telephone number and email if possible.
Glamping at the Grove It’s the current ‘must-have’ holiday, but for one North Norfolk holiday destination it’s more a case of going back to the future.
Glamping- glamorous camping - has swept the nation as the perfect way to relax, unwind and enjoy the country under canvas, yet with all the luxuries one expects from a high-class hotel. And the craze is heading to Cromer as one of town’s oldest accommodation providers, the Grove joins forces with Magical Camping to provide wonderful holidays in the most beautiful surroundings.
Magical Events, run by husband and wife team Matt and Lisa Mazurek from Dereham, supply classic Victorian bell tents and tipis for

campsites all over Norfolk and the UK. They have been looking for a Cromer-based site for a number of years and have now found the perfect spot. The Grove, on Overstrand Road, is a Georgian summer house built by the founders of Barclays Bank and enjoys four acres of grounds, with walks through Warren Woods to the cliffs and the beach, plus an award winning restaurant, swimming pool and some quirky items including a decked pill box overlooking the gardens!
The Grove has been owned and run by the Graveling family since 1936, and during the sixties, seventies and eighties John and Ann Graveling and John’s sister Edna often held or hosted Pathfinder, Scout and Girl Guide camps during the long summer months.
Current owner Richard Graveling was just a boy when camping was a regular feature. “I remember when there were rows of old bell tents out on the field, and of course when we were very young we used to love pottering around and exploring – probably being a real nuisance!” he said. “We sometimes still have friends camping out on the field and so it’s always been a big part of summer here. So when my head chef Charlie Hodson got in touch with Matt and Lisa we were delighted that their approach would bring the past back to life here.”
Glampers can also enjoy discounted rates on bike hire and surf lessons from Pedal Revolutions and the Glide Surf School in Cromer, as well as a welcome hamper from the Grove with goodies from local suppliers Icarus Hines and Crush Foods. In fact the tents will be

NORTH WALSHAM & BRADFIELD NORTH WALSHAM IN BLOOM FLOWER CLUB How much longer, we are all asking ourselves, is this wet weather going
For our first meeting of the year in January we had a fantastic turnout to see a new demonstrator, Annette Watson who also works at Spring Floral Design here in North Walsham and, although she was a little nervous to start with, she quickly endeared herself to us all as she worked and we hope she continues to go from strength to strength.
Our membership seems to be growing month on month which is great but it does mean we are having to make plans to try out the staging for future demonstrations so all members can see.
Over the coming year as well as a mix of demonstrators visiting from near and far, we are also planning some workshops in addition to our programme so that members can do some 'hands-on' work instead of just watching a demonstrator. We are also putting on a couple of larger demonstrations in The Atrium in May and October - more on this next time.
We don't have a demonstration in February as we hold our AGM, followed by a members’ lunch at The Beechwood Hotel. For our meeting on 27 March, we will be welcoming Vicky Hease from Suffolk, who will be doing "Spring Fantasy' for us. She is also a keen patchworker so I'm particularly looking forward to seeing her work with flowers and colours. Glenis Dillon

ROLLS ROYCE SPIRIT
to continue?
We have been trying for the past few weeks to move forward with our new bed in Grammar School Road, but so far have not been able to get very far due to the very wet weather and the fact that all the plants have rooted through the weed suppressant.
This area was created by Norfolk County Council in 2007 and was not designed to need much attention let alone be completely re-vamped. However we are determined to succeed and all our helpers will be working on the area on a regular basis to achieve this aim.
Our new planters have arrived and will soon be sited in the town complete with our sponsors’ names on their plaques, we hope that these will make up for the fact that we are not having as many hanging baskets this year, and indeed some of the basket sponsors have moved over to support the new towers. Our thanks do indeed go to them for being flexible in their thinking and helping is with this.
We have set the date for our spring planting, this being 2 June, please bear this date in mind as we are very short of planters this year and all help, young and old, would be appreciated. If you would like to help please contact Muriel on 01692 400717 or Sandra on 01692 501078.
Before that however we have our coffee morning on 10 April. This will be the first coffee morning without Pat Stott who. as many of you know, was something of a stalwart on these occasions and will be greatly missed.

'Protect Our Coast' petition launched following Environment Agency warning
North Norfolk Labour Party has warned the government against "sacrificing" parts of North Norfolk to the sea as it launches its Protect Our Coast campaign and petition. The local Labour Party has started the online petition following the news that the Environment Agency are considering protecting towns over villages - leaving areas like Cley, Salthouse, and Brancaster potentially without protection. The petition also calls on people to call for more government investment in flood protection - after it was revealed spending on protection was being cut below the levels the previous government had budgeted for. Last month it was revealed the Environment Agency was having to cut 1,500 jobs to deal with budget restraints. These workers could be key to alerting people to floods as well as helping to protect homes. Denise Burke, Labour's Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for North Norfolk and who lives on the coast in Happisburgh,
is concerned that this could lead to more communities being affected in the longer term if flood defences are not reinstated in marshes. She said "We all will have heard recently the Environment Agency boss saying that funding cuts from government mean tough choices between protecting towns or protecting villages. Friends of the Earth have pointed out that a that they will consult first we feel this petition small increase in funding recently announced could add real weight to any final decision, and for victims of the the Somerset flooding has we hope it will send a message to government been a knee-jerk reaction and is only a drop in too." the ocean of what we need to combat climate change and severe weather. Already hundreds of people have signed online I fear proposals for Cley, Salthouse, and at www.protectourcoast.co.uk. The local Brancaster are just the thin edge of the wedge Labour group are using the petition to seek the the marshes are first but where will be next? views of those concerned about the proposals. This is going to significantly hit villages, communities, businesses, and tourism. We cannot allow North Norfolk to be sacrificed on the altar of government cuts. Dear Margaret With the Environment I am currently in the process of setting up a youth group for the Agency announcing towns new generation. To start off we are putting on a music event in the town’s Community Centre on Friday 14 March 7 to midnight. 25% of all proceeds will go to the fund. The group activities will be catering for the youths’ needs in music, stage settings, arts & crafts, learning how to promote and perform at venues and also taking their skills into the public. East of England Ambulance Trust announces more ambulance cover in Norfolk The East of England Ambulance Service Trust has announced they will increase ambulance cover in Norfolk - with a new ambulance based in Cromer.
Campaigners have welcomed the additional cover, but there has been some scepticism as it is nearly a year after five extra ambulances for the county were announced but did not make it on to the road. It was revealed shortly after that the initial announcement last year that additional cover had been hampered by a lack of staff resource.
Act on Ambulances campaigners, from the North Norfolk Labour Party, are now asking East of England Ambulance Service Trust to reveal
where those additional promised hours have gone.
The Act on Ambulances campaign was created over concerns about a rota shake-up that led to the number of Double Staffed Ambulances (DSAs) in Norfolk fall from 53 to 44.
Denise Burke, Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for North Norfolk, said "While we welcome any additional cover in North Norfolk we have had numerous promises of additional resource that did not come to fruition, and we are still looking for answers on a similar announcement made last year. Out of the 5 additional ambulances earmarked for Norfolk we do not know how many of of these actually ended up in action. The East of England Ambulance Service Trust needs to be more transparent about the changes to rotas so campaigners can keep a careful eye on the bigger picture.”
House of Commons debates North Norfolk's ambulance response times
Poor ambulance response times in North Norfolk was mentioned in the House of Commons during a debate on Accident and Emergency in the NHS.
During the debate Andy Burnham, the Shadow Health Secretary, claimed increased Accident and Emergency visits were having a knock-on effects on ambulance response times in areas like North Norfolk, and referred to the increased delays at A&E in Norwich “That has left large swathes of the country - particularly in rural areas - without adequate ambulance cover, and very serious incidents have taken place across the country,” he said.
He pointed to cuts in adult social care budgets,
the closure of walk-in centres, the scrapping of NHS Direct, and delays in patients seeing doctors which had all added strain on A&E since the last General Election.
"David Cameron has made it harder to see your GP" he said, because the coalition had done away with Labour’s guarantee of an appointment within 48 hours. "Now, the story I hear up and down the country is of people phoning surgeries only to be told there is nothing available for days. What will they do? Go to where the lights are on - A&E."
Labour are calling for better integration to improve care in the home or community which can relieve pressure on A&E, as well as

Just the Ticket at The Old Rock Shop Bistro
Sam Grout, owner of the Old Rock Shop Bistro in Hamilton Road, Cromer is to host a ‘temporary’ Box Office for the Pavilion Theatre, Cromer Pier.
Sam said “With the continuing wet and cold weather I thought it would be a good idea to offer patrons to the theatre an alternative to walking up the pier to buy their tickets - of course on a good day there is nothing like a walk on the pier but for the days when it’s not so good calling into the Bistro to buy tickets and get information on forthcoming shows seemed like a good idea”.
The new service will commence on Tuesday 18 February with the Box Office open Tuesday to Saturday 9.30am – 3pm and will operate initially until Saturday 8 March. And if demand
is high the period will be extended until later in the month. Customers will be able to book and pay for tickets at the bistro as well as collect details on forthcoming shows and concerts.
Rebecca Wass, General Manager of Cromer Pier, said ‘I am delighted, it is a great idea and a wonderful gesture on Sam’s part, it is very important that both residents and visitors to the area know that they can still buy tickets to the many exciting shows and concerts that we have scheduled at the theatre and an ‘in-town’ Box office to help us through the next few weeks while work is going on at the pier will certainly help’.
She continued ‘Our new entertainment brochure will be published in the next few days so demand for tickets is bound to increase so this is perfect timing and I am sure my Box Office team are all looking forward to seeing
our patrons at the bistro.’
Sam commented ‘Cromer Pier and the Pavilion Theatre are very important to the town and anything that can be done to make sure that people are aware that they are open for business after a very dramatic end to last year is good for the town, it’s all about working together to make the best of a difficult situation’.
Work has now started on the repair work to the pier Box Office, Coffee Reef and Footprints Gift Shop although at present a definite re-opening date cannot be given. The Pavilion Bar at the end of the pier is open daily while the theatre will reopen for its first show of the season on Saturday 1 March - Julian and Jiaxin Lloyd Webber in ‘A Tale of Two Cellos at 7.30pm.

BEGINNERS PLEASE!
The Sheringham Players present an Evening of Short Plays Showcasing New Talent ‘Beginners Please’! is the traditional call heard backstage at theatres all over the world from the National in London to the tiniest of amateur dramatic companies held in the humble church hall.
It signals the imminent start of the play/opera/ pantomime and quickens the pulse of those who need to be on stage as the curtains open.
The Sheringham Players, who are privileged to perform at Sheringham Little Theatre have heard the same call to arms for almost 50 years. However on 21 and 22 March at Sheringham Little Theatre, this call will have another meaning.
The Sheringham Players have been recruiting new members in order to keep going strong for another 50 years. To showcase the new ‘beginners’ (both onstage and back) they are presenting something a little different. - a mix of short plays from 5 minutes to a full one act,
Readers Write ...
ranging from sad through to downright silly - and from the pens of authors such as Harold Pinter and local favourite, David Tristram.
The whole evening will be compéred with short introductions to each play to set the scene.
The plays will include Score by Lyndon Brook, Night by Harold Pinter, Doggies by Jean McConnell and What’s for Pudding by David Tristram.
The Sheringham Players will present ten plays each evening and of course members of the audience can take full advantage of the beautifully refurbished Hub Bar and Café.
Please go along on 21 or 22 March and be in at the ‘beginning’ of the next 50 years of The Sheringham Players.

All Aboard, Volunteers!
On Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 March the Bure Valley Railway will be hosting its Volunteers Open Weekend for anyone interested in volunteering on the railway. The day will give the opportunity to meet existing staff and volunteers and see behind the scenes, including a chance to drive a steam engine!
The Bure Valley Railway is Norfolk’s longest Narrow Gauge Steam Railway and operates over the nine miles between the market town of Aylsham and the Broads town of Wroxham. The railway is owned by a small group of enthusiasts and is operated entirely on a not for profit basis, with any profits being reinvested. With the dedication and commitment of a small team of paid staff and active volunteers the railway now carries over 100,000 passengers each year.

RECORD-BREAKER ARRIVES IN TOWN The big Poppy Line Steam Gala Friday 7th – Sunday 9th March
The holder of the post-war British steam train speed record will be whizzing in to star in the North Norfolk Railway’s Steam Gala next month.
Sir Nigel Gresley, built in 1937, will arrive in style for the three-day event, steaming over the Sheringham level crossing currently expected at 1830 on the 5th March. Named after her designer, the engine created the landmark when she hit 112 miles an hour as the age of steam drew towards its close in May 1959 – and that was never beaten.
She is the sister engine of Mallard, the holder of the world steam train speed record with an astonishing 125.88 mph in the summer of 1938.
And she isn’t the only one of Sir Nigel’s creations to be gracing the Gala – a Great Northern Railway Class N2 engine will be visiting from the Great Central Railway and, in a perfect marriage, will haul the Poppy Line’s unique set of quad-art coaches, providing a snapshot of the pre-second

world war days when such trains were a familiar sight to commuters in suburban North London.
The Gresleys will be joined by engines from the Poppy Line’s own fleet, including George Stephenson – back in business after a major overhaul by the railway – and the popular B12 express, resplendent in the apple green colour of the old London and North Eastern Railway.
Rover tickets offer unlimited travel all day on all the trains, and there’ll be an intensive steam service every day. Advance Rover fares for a day are £16.15 for adults, with
equivalent on the day fares of £19 for adults.
An advance booking discount is available until 28th February only. Go online to www.nnrailway.co.uk or call 01263 820 800. Tickets give free entry to the William Marriott Museum at Holt Station.

North Walsham Table Tennis Aylsham Thrillers fro NWSCD
The remaining teams entered the handicap arena as the first round of the Doubles Cup continued. At the ACT Centre, Aylsham C’s Will Sutton (K), Harley Dyson (L) and Owain Athill (N) hosted NWSCD’s Joe Kirkup (E), Philip Stone (F) and James Lester (H). The first two battles of a fast attacking nature were shared before Kirkup and Stone beat Sutton and Dyson (+11) 5-21, 21-17, 21-19. Kirkup and Lester did the hard work to draw level at 16-16 in the decider against Dyson and Athill (+12), but then let their concentration slip as the Aylsham duo won the third 21-17 to tie the match at 2-2 which became 3-3 as the momentum shifts continued. Dyson and Athill (+13) took the first against Kirkup and Stone 21-20 and led the second 20-8. The Walsham pair then saved thirteen consecutive match-points, the last of which was the deciding point as they levelled 21-20, but could not recover from a bad start in the decider which Aylsham easily won 21-7 to lead 4-3. Kirkup and Lester then kept NWSCD in the contest as they won a nervy affair against Sutton and Dyson (+10) 19-21, 15-21, 21-19 to set up a deciding match. In the crucial ninth battle Stone and Lester were giving away

slightly less points and as a result were able to hit a little more freely – they beat Sutton and Athill (+8)’s 21-17, 21-16 to seal NWSCD’s 5-4 win.
NWSCC’s Chris Johnson (J), James Morter (H) and Ben Lester (L) at Cromer Tennis Club with the handicaps giving the visitors starts between 6-11. Morter and Lester (+11) won the opener against Wilson and Warner in three, but the turning point of the match came in the next battle as De Neve and Warner saved eleven consecutive match-points against Johnson and Lester (+11) – the last of those of course being the golden point where it was match-point to both teams as Backhanders won 21-20 in the third to tie the contest. The comeback boosted the confidence of the Cromer team and despite dropping the fifth battle of the night in three sets, a quartet of victories in straight saw Backhanders to a 5-2 win.
NWSCD are the defending champions in the Handicap Singles Cup and were also drawn away at the ACT Centre, this time against Aylsham B where James Morter took the place of Lester (both players standing in for injured captain Mary Sawyer). With the first five battles going to a deciding set, it was a shaky start to their Cup defence - Stone lost the golden point as Ian Potter (+4)’s 21-20 win in the third saw Aylsham to a 2-0 lead. However Morter (+2) hit sparkling form to defeat Potter and a maximum from Kirkup saw NWSCD advance with a 5-2 win.
Back in the doubles competition Aylsham A team of John Miller (H), Dave Johns (G) and John Hall (H) visited Antingham where they had starts ranging from 4-10, but the NWSCA team of Andy Beane (D), Tom Baldock-Yaxley (A) and John Vaughan (G) came out the right side of six 21-20 sets during their 6-0 win. Backhander’s Teucer Wilson (E), Whil De Neve (G) and Paul Warner (D) hosted
Elsewhere NWSCB advanced to both quarter-finals in contrasting style as they won a derby in the singles 6-0 against NWSCE and edged a tight clash in the doubles 5-3 against Gresham’s School B while NWSCC lost out 6-3 to Aylsham A in the singles.
