RACING TO BEAT CANCER
Covering North Walsham, Aylsham and surrounding villages in association with the Cromer Times and Sheringham Independent
The family of the late Helen Plummer from North Walsham are currently training hard for the 2014 Virgin London Marathon. This is the 4th year Helen’s family members have covered the 26.2 gruelling miles for Breast Cancer Campaign and this time they have their biggest team yet!
Helen’s niece Vicky Harmer says ‘Although our training is challenging, our aim is simple... to help beat breast cancer. We have been committed to raising money for Breast Cancer Campaign for the last nine years and have now raised over £60,000. Our target is to reach £100,000 by 2020.

RACING TO BEAT CANCER Continued from front cover...
We are passionate about supporting Breast Cancer Campaign because it is the charity that my aunty, Helen Plummer, supported before she died of breast cancer in 2006. She was an inspiration during her two and a half year battle, raising over £11,000 (with the support of family and friends) and we promised her that we would continue to play our part in finding a cure and preventing other families from suffering the same fate. With 50,000 women being diagnosed with breast cancer in the UK every year (and 12,000 dying from the disease) there is still a lot of work to be done’.
As part of their London Marathon fundraising campaign the family are holding their fourth Helen’s Heroes Charity Night in aid of Breast Cancer Campaign with live entertainment, including a DJ and the band ‘Night Train’ at North Walsham Community Centre on Saturday 22 March 7pm until 12 midnight. Tickets are £8 and can be purchased at Station Rd, Happisburgh Rd and Mundesley Rd Stores or on the door. There will be bacon rolls and pizza available from 8pm. For more information about making a donation to their fundraising or or donate an auction prize for the Charity Night please contact Jo Inch on 01263 834925 or Vicky Harmer on 01692 406626

Esuubi Craft Fair Success
Paston Sixth Form College students raised over £200 for the Esuubi Trust. The trust started when one of our students took a gap year in Uganda, and worked at an orphanage in Mityana, near the capital Kampala.
Essubi Trust was set up to raise money to care for the hundreds of orphans whose parents have died from the Aids epidemic. The charity is particularly interesting to us because our money goes directly to help students the same age as ours to pay for their education, and also pay for equipment to train them in craft skills so that they have a means for their education and in the future supporting their families.
The BTEC Art students made jewellery, printed t-shirts and made cakes which they sold to staff and students throughout the college.
The Belfry School Gets Helping Hands from Waitrose Volunteers
Staff at Waitrose North Walsham have volunteered to help a local organisation – The Belfry School, Overstrand - in the community.
Amy Hobart at The Belfry School said “They were so enthusiastic and brilliant fun to work with. The completed paint job in the library looks fantastic and the PE sheds have never been so tidy”.
This is part of a Waitrose initiative called Partner Volunteering which allows Partners, as all employees are known, to take time out of their daily roles to volunteer their skills, experience and time to local causes.
Casey Walker, a Partner at Waitrose North Walsham said “It’s been great to help out the school and as well as doing work for a local organisation, I’ve been able to develop my new skills and experiences which I can bring back to Waitrose”.
Every year Waitrose North Walsham, volunteers up to 250 hours to organisations, charities and causes in their local communities which have been nominated by customers. In the past year, Waitrose North Walsham has helped to clear shrub land, paint rooms, gardening, etc.
If you know of any local causes that are in need of a helping hand, you can fill in an application form at the Welcome Desk of your local Waitrose or contact Lynn Aldridge, Partner Coordination Manager, on 01692 503109 or email personnelmanagernorthwalsham@waitrose.co.uk
First World War Commemoration
Events to commemorate the hundredth anniversary of the outbreak of World War One are being organised throughout Great Britain.
The North Walsham branch of the Royal British Legion are planning a two day event to take place on Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th of September this year. Thanks to the many local organisations who have joined in to assist, a full weekend of commemoration to include films, music, drama and exhibitions is planned.
At this stage we are earnestly appealing for help from the local public. If you have any photos, memorabilia or information about relatives or acquaintances who served in the First World War you would be willing to share with us can you please let us know? You can call in at Three Cottages Fish Restaurant on Bacton Road or telephone David Audley on 01692 404418 and arrangements can be made to collect any items you are able to loan. Spring Scallops, Pea Puree, Norfolk Smoked Back... Simple yet so scrummy! Serves 4 people
8 scallops with roe cleaned, and seasoned pan-ready…
For the pea puree, boil fresh garden peas for approx 3-4 mins until soft.
Strain and blanche the peas under iced water to instantly put an end to their suffering.. place peas into food processer, seasoning to taste, sqeeze of lemon, and orange zest. And puree to a smooth paste.
Place place 8 pieces of bacon (Icarus Hines, my fab buthcher, will always advise you on the best bacon to use) in the oven on a tray, with another tray on top, then add a weight of some kind (ie cast iron skillet pan) and bake for 10- 15 mins on gas mark 7 until the
bacon is golden brown and crisp. The weight is used to keep bacon as flat and thin as possible so, when cool, it looks like shard of glass.
With a hot pan, sear your scallops (I get mine from Davies fish merchant in Cromer) for approximately two mins (dependent on size) on both sides. We tend to use cold pressed rape seed oil from Crush Foods in our pans the taste is fantastic and most importantly it comes from Norfolk. At the same time gently heat the pea puree until nicely hot.
Present on the plate with a nice spoonful of puree, two nicely cooked scallops, two pieces of bacon, a few

Give blood for Mother’s Day this month
As Mother’s Day approaches, NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) is highlighting how donated blood is often used to help new mums and their babies.
Blood is vital for a wide variety of procedures in hospitals. One important, often urgent and life-saving way it is used, is for pregnant women or new mothers experiencing severe bleeds.
Premature babies often also need blood transfusions to replace the blood that is taken for testing as they struggle to make new blood cells in the first few weeks after birth.
Around 6% of blood used in hospitals is for maternity care so people from Suffolk are being urged to think about new mums and their babies around Mother’s Day and make a date to give blood.
NHS Blood and Transplant’s lead donor relations manager for the Anglia area, Derek Carr, said “In the run-up to Mother’s Day we would like people to think about not only their own mother but also the mothers and families they can help simply by giving blood.
“Here at NHS Blood and Transplant, we are regularly contacted by grateful young mothers who owe their lives to blood donors after receiving transfusions during childbirth. So rest assured, you really can make a difference and help to save a life simply by going along to a local session.”
Anyone aged between 17-65, weighing more than 50 kg (7st 12lbs) and in general good health could potentially start saving lives by becoming a blood donor. There is no upper age limit for donors who have donated in the last two years.
For more information, to find a local blood donation session and to book an appointment please call 0300 123 23 23 or visit www.blood.co.uk

Slow Food Aylsham helps celebrate International Women's Day
Shared Earth: Common Ground was the theme of this year's International Women's Day event run by the Norfolk Federation of Women's Institutes on 1 March. Among other attractions, Aylsham's Slow Food group was on hand to talk about the international Slow Food movement and in particular, the group's involvement in local activities.
Mo Anderson-Dungar, Sue Margarson, Margaret Brooker and Jill Willis represented Slow Food Aylsham, staging two very popular workshops. Delegates were told about the Slow Food 'Taste Adventure' for children, which has been a feature of the Aylsham Show for the last three years, and about the annual Aylsham Food Festival, run by the group and staged over three days each October.
associated subjects, culminating in a discussion group on the Women's Institutes' 'Great Food Debate'.
Slow Food Aylsham also had a stand where delegates could learn more about Slow Food Aylsham and which featured a selection of local products.
The day-long event covered a wide range of subjects, almost all relating to food and
No Longer a Women-only Club...
Commenting on the day, Mo Anderson-Dungar said "We were delighted to be part of an event which covered subjects so closely linked to the Slow Food philosophy. Our group in Aylsham works with local community organisations and in particular with local schools, which allows us to introduce youngsters to healthy eating and to give them an insight into the sustainability and biodiversity problems facing the world. Slow Food Aylsham is a not-for-profit membership organisation, a branch of the international Slow Food movement.

Laser and Cosmetic Treatments for Men A recent study at Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic has shown that a third of our patients are now men. We offer a range of medical treatments unlike a lot of purely cosmetic clinics.
Men can be just as concerned about their looks as women and how society views them. It has seemed the norm for a long time for men to accept that they cannot change things. Not anymore, the trend is that more men are coming for a variety of treatments and enjoying the benefits. Men want to remain youthful and often want to keep up with their partners (who are often the people who introduce them to these treatments or bring them along to appointments!)
Here at Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic we understand that men don’t want to give up their masculinity. Dr Gheyi helps to navigate patients through the numerous treatments we offer and to give you the look that you wish to achieve.
The effects of ageing can be reversed and a new physique can be attained, which could not be achieved even with exercise and a healthy diet.
The most popular treatments among men are photo rejuvenation for conditions such as rosacea, thread veins on the face and pigmentation issues. Botox and filler treatments have also seen an increase in popularity. With the introduction of minimally invasive surgical treatments we see men having their varicose veins removed and having liposuction for body contouring. All our invasive treatments are performed purely under local anaesthesia on a walk-in walk-out basis so there is no worry about general anaesthesia and hospitalisation issues.

From 1st July 2013, a new menu of services is being provided through the Carers Agency Partnership, known as CAP, commissioned by Norfolk County Council and the Norfolk Clinical Commissioning Groups.
What do we mean by ‘carers’? A carer is anyone who spends a significant proportion of their life providing unpaid support to a relative, partner or friend who is ill, frail, disabled or has a mental health problem or substance misuse problem. Who is providing the services? The services are provided via eight very experienced and local carers’ organisations who are working together as the Carers Agency Partnership, led by Crossroads Care East Anglia. The other partners are Age UK Norfolk, Norwich and Central MIND, Great Yarmouth & Waveney MIND, West Norfolk MIND, Norfolk Carers Support, West Norfolk Befriending and West Norfolk Carers. What services are available? CAP is the one-stop shop for: • Information and advice • One-to-one support • Short breaks • Groups • Befriending • Grants • Signposting • Emotional support :::::::::: and access to much more.
How is the service accessed? Via a one-stop Helpline which is open 9-5 MonFri and 10-2 on Saturdays.. A carer can refer directly to the service and can access the service in several ways: • Helpline number is 0808 808 9876, which is both free and local, or access the service via: norfolkcarershelpline@crossroadseastanglia.org.uk
Staff at the Helpline are trained in providing advice, information and emotional support to all carers and will assess the best service for the carer. Where specialist help is required, the Helpline staff will refer a carer to the relevant agency. Partners will also have CAP locality leaders who liase at a local level with professionals and organisations and can also refer into the Helpline. The locality leaders enable one-to-one support, access to befriending and support to local carers’ groups – for contact information, go to: • The website: www.norfolkcarersinfo.org.uk • Via Facebook: Norfolk Carers Information • Via Twitter: @nflkcarersinfo

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
Firstly, we would like to give an update on the cats and kittens mentioned in our last article. The six older kittens have now all been blood tested for FIV and FELV and we were delighted when the tests came back with a negative result. These six lovely cats are now available for adoption and when they leave for their new homes their new owners will be advised of their family history. Mum, Guiness, is now available for adoption but only to an “indoor” home, as previously advised. The four younger kittens have now had their first vaccination but cannot be blood tested until the 2nd one is due. Because they will have antibodies in their blood as a consequence of feeding from Guiness the usual blood tests will not give a true reading as to whether they have FIV or not. They therefore need a different test which will give a true picture as to whether or not they have FIV or just the antibodies. In the meantime Tubbs, Tufty, Pippin and Kato remain in good health, continue to grow and enjoy playing together. We will advise the outcome of their blood test in due course.
We have already re-homed over 40 cats and kittens this year and, as usual, their pens have soon been filled by cats from our website. Two of the cats, Billy and Betty, joined us because they had been abandoned by their previous owners and were living in a cupboard in the foyer of the flats where they previously had a home. Fortunately the caretaker of the

flats was a cat lover and continued to feed them until we were able to take them in. Although only about two years old we were immediately concerned at the condition of one of Billy’s eyes. An initial visit to the vets indicates that this could be glaucoma and may require an operation. Billy will be going to see David for a final decision and we will let you know how he got on once a decision has been made.

Springtime Safety Tips with Animal Magic Dog Club
Despite the wet weather the springtime plants are starting to appear. Snowdrops are in bloom and even the Daffs are starting to poke their greenery above the surface. It’s a cruel trick of nature that some of the most beautiful, colorful springtime plants pose a deadly temptation to the four-legged members of your family. Taking a few simple precautions to avoid any plants known to be deadly to pets can prevent a potential tragedy for you and your family this spring.
Here are a few common plants to be aware of: Tulips and Hyacinths - Tulips contain allergenic Lactones. Lactones are derived from chemical compounds and taste a bit like Whiskey. Hyacinths contain similar compounds. It’s the bulbs of these two plants, not the leaves or flowers, which are toxic. There’s no antidote if your dog is poisoned by eating a Tulip or Hyacinth bulb, and severe symptoms need immediate treatment.
Daffodils - If your pet licks or eats any part of a daffodil – the bulb, plant or flower – they will ingest an alkaloid called Lycorine which can irritate the tissues of the mouth and throat and cause excessive drooling. Lycorine can also trigger a gastrointestinal response like vomiting, abdominal pain or diarrhea. In more serious cases, heart and respiratory problems can occur. Severe symptoms such as these require immediate attention by a vet.
Crocuses - The variety of crocus plants that blooms in the spring is a member of the Iridaceae family. Spring crocuses can cause gastrointestinal upset in your pet, typically vomiting and diarrhea.
Lily of the Valley - The substance in Lily of the Valley that is toxic to your pet is called cardiac glycosides. If you think your dog has ingested a Lily of the Valley, you should get him to your vet for a checkup asap. If you are concerned about your dog’s health at any time please seek veterinary advice.

Happisburgh Lifeboat Station Happisburgh Lifeboat Crew looked back at 2013 with the awards and dinner dance held at Sutton Staithe Hotel last month.
Just under a hundred people attended the dinner dance. After the meal the main purpose of the evening was to look back at 2013.
Happisburgh R.N.L.I. Lifeboat Station volunteers have had a busy 2013, with seven services for our D-Class, Spirit of Berkhamsted, and five services for our Atlantic, Douglas Paley. The services include swimmers, people on reefs, missing divers, broken down boats and missing dogs. The crew have also helped when the boats were not needed, for a man with head injuries who was treated on the beach until handover to the Air Ambulance.
the D Class in December.
Bob Mann and Sean Ferguson both went on a mechanics course, for the Atlantic 75, in June with Dave Cato completing his crew course also in June.
If services and training was not enough the crew also did fundraising for the RNLI throughout the year raising a total of £18,500, this includes last year’s Dinner Dance £545, Lifeboat Fete £4,800 and Christian, Dave, Will, Danny, Tim and Justin took on the Three Peaks Challenge, climbing the three highest peaks in Britain; they climbed The volunteers have a total height of 3,407 also carried out meters, hiked 25 miles training on Sundays up and down and Justin Cedric Cox, Jake Munday, Philip Smith and Tuesdays. Peter and Rita Poll, who have both supported the station with our shop and collection boxes since the mid 80s, were presented with a cake, in the shape of a collection box and flowers for Rita.
The Service award for memorable Services was not awarded this year as the Lifeboat Management group did not deem any of last year’s services were sufficiently memorable to receive this award.
The crew and their guests then enjoyed the rest of the night dancing to music played by an excellent band.

North Walsham Photographic Group AGM & Presentation of Trophies
North Walsham Photographic Group held their 29th AGM at the Atrium (Annex building) on Tuesday 18 February.
The group membership has increased to 30 in the last year and members have had a very busy time. Activities ranged from speaker presentations, outdoor photo shoot events, practical workshop sessions, competitions and the annual exhibition of members’ work which, in 2013, included a photographic competition open to the public.
Trevor Fiddy won the trophy for the digital image section in the Annual Competition with his image ‘White Feather’ . Entries to the two sections of the Annual Competition comprise of members’ best work over the year.
with her print ‘Goatsbeard Seedhead’
Most excitement came with a special prize of a Nikon camera and flashgun.
North Walsham Photographic Group was invited, as one of three camera clubs, to enter a competition being run by Nikon UK. The theme was landscape and we entered 22 images.
John Riggott, our treasurer, won the competition and is now the proud owner of one of the newest Nikon cameras on the market. We have been very well supported this year by the Nikon group.
The group has five trophies, which are presented annually and the competitions were hard fought.
Richard Powell won the Bellenie Trophy for the highest overall score in the quarterly competitions, narrowly snatching victory from Bob Whitbread by ½ point.
Ray Woolcock won the Zelley Shield for the best print in the Annual Competition together with the Jolyn Trophy for the picture most admired by the judge. His winning print was entitled ‘Two Minute Silence’.
Prizewinners L to R: Liz Fiddy, Trevor Fiddy, Ray Woolcock, Richard Powell The Myall Trophy is presented to the best Nature print and was won by Elizabeth Fiddy
North Walsham Photographic Group is now moving into its 30th year. Originally starting as North Walsham Camera Club and meeting on Sunday evenings in the bar of the Feathers in North Walsham, it has developed over the years to encompass new technology and still encourage the hobby of photography. We are looking forward to an exciting year.
The annual Music Matters scheme is back, bringing with it an opportunity for community-based benefit from John Lewis Partnership donations of between £500 and £3,000.
Nigel Brotherton, Music Appeals Advisor to the Partnership said ‘Music Matters makes possible local musical events which have a real impact on local communities’.
Music Groups can apply for the award through the local Waitrose at North Walsham.
Submissions must be made before the closing date of 20 March 2014.

Star of War Horse Film to make special appearance at Blickling Proms event
Organisers of Last Night of the Blickling Proms have announced a very special guest appearance to this year’s event on Saturday 9 August.
Augustus, the 7-year-old, 14.3hh horse that starred as the young Joey in the 2011 classic Steven Spielberg blockbuster War Horse, lives in Suffolk and will be making a special visit to Blickling as part of the event’s commemoration of 100 years since the start of World War I. War Horse, which was nominated for six Academy Awards, two Golden Globe Awards and five BAFTAs, was an adaptation of British author Michael Morpurgo's 1982 children's novel of the same name, set before and during World War I.
The first half of the concert will include a nostalgic sing-along of some of the best-loved songs from the World War I era, including “It’s a long way to Tipperary”, “Keep the Home Fires Burning” and “Pack up Your Troubles in Your Old Kit Bag”; song sheets will be provided and the audience will be encouraged to join in. The second half will begin with the emotionally-charged War Horse anthem that was composed by John Williams;
TIME TELLS
North Walsham resident Jan Woodhouse has recently published her first novel, ‘Time Tells’.
It is a rather dark, psychological mystery, with lots of twists and turns, and it just happens to be set in North Walsham and Norwich.
Paperback books are available from Amazon, and it can also be purchased as an ebook.

a wide walkway will be cleared down the centre of the picnic area and Augustus will parade down the middle, with a spotlight on him, accompanied by an actor depicting Albert, the young lad that goes in search of his horse in the film. Lisa Ward from Revival Productions said: “It will be a special moment! The music and the film are incredibly moving and we’re delighted that Augustus will be joining us to make the piece complete for us.”
Augustus is owned by AB Film Horses which specialises in the equestrian TV/Film and stunt business; it was founded by horse trainer and master, Andy Butcher. Augustus has been with Andy since he was three years old and War Horse was the first film that he featured in. He was on location for around three months in Sussex, Surrey and Devon, where stabling was provided and the horses were looked after extremely well. Along with the other six Joeys who were used for specialist skills in different scenes, “hair and make-up” was done daily to make them all look identical. Andy explained: “The training was very intense. Augustus had to be de-sensitised to noise, taught to rear, lie down and bow in 3 separate ways! One of the most important parts of his training was coming to the whip, enabling the trainer to be out of sight of the camera but still able to control the horse from a distance. This particular part of the training formed the foundation of some of the most iconic moments in
the film, when Albert is teaching Joey to come to his whistle; this obviously comes full circle at the end of the film when he is trying to identify his horse. Augustus is very clever and good-natured and he took to the role like a pro.”
Lisa Ward from Revival Productions said “This year’s event will include several moving moments and Augustus’s appearance will definitely be one of them. Apparently he’s very cheeky and I’m sure he’ll enjoy all the attention. Since War Horse, he has featured in three other blockbuster films and made other TV appearances and next Christmas, I believe, he will be on screen again as a part of a pair of horses pulling a chariot in a big film called “The Book of Exodus”, so watch this space!
The second half of the concert will also contain a poignant remembrance before the rousing sounds of “Rule Britannia”, “Jerusalem” and “Land of Hope and Glory.” It promises to be a true celebration of some of the greatest music ever written and performed by the highly acclaimed Sinfonia Viva orchestra under conductor Roderick Dunk. Concert goers can bring their own picnics and soak up the atmosphere in the company of friends - now firmly rooted in the Norfolk social calendar, this is an event not to be missed.
Tickets (£33 in advance or £36 on the night) are available online at
www.revival-productions.co.uk

Paston Question Time 2014
“What’s next for Norfolk?”
The annual Paston Sixth Form College Question Time took place in the theatre on 28 February during a specially extended lunchtime. Over 250 students and staff took part in the event.
The distinguished panel was chaired by event organiser Joan Cherry and was made up of Norman Lamb, MP, Minister of State at the Department of Health and Liberal Democratic MP for North Norfolk, Rhodri Oliver, Conservative member and Deputy Leader of North Norfolk District Council for Sheringham
South Ward, Dr Ian Gibson, who was Dean of Biological Sciences at UEA and an ex Labour MP for Norwich North and then went on to become Chairman of the Science and Technology Select Committee, Dr Richard McGuire Senior Lecturer in Public History at UEA and Andrew Boswell from the Green Party.
The real stars of the event were the students who posed a number of very challenging questions to the panel. The debates main focus was on the question “What’s next for Norfolk?” A range of very topical local questions were linked to national and world issues. Topics included local transport subsidies, health spending, welfare reform, and taxation and immigration policy.

The panel had to work very hard and enjoyed responding to some

North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Corporate Assets, Democratic Services and Electoral Services, Rhodri Oliver, was named ‘Young Councillor of the Year’ at the annual Councillor Achievement Awards ceremony, held at Westminster City Hall in London on Tuesday 25 March.
Judges at the annual achievement awards, organised by the LGiU and CCLA (Local Government Information Unit), awarded Councillor Oliver for ‘setting a fantastic example for young people in politics’. They went on to comment on how they were ‘impressed that Councillor Oliver has achieved a leadership position at a very young age’.
North Norfolk District Council Leader, Tom FitzPatrick, said “I was delighted to be at Westminster City Hall to see Councillor Oliver receive his award as ‘Young Councillor of the Year’. He is a great example of how young people in Local Government can really make an impact and I believe his success will encourage many others to consider how they too can get involved in making a difference within their own communities.
“He is the youngest deputy leader in the country, a position he achieved solely on merit and I regard him as a one of NNDC’s most valuable assets.
“He makes a huge contribution as a member of the Cabinet and as a local Member for Sheringham South Ward. His work to gain funding for a skate park for Sheringham and to ensure improvement works were made to Sheringham Little Theatre has proved that he has a lot to offer residents of north Norfolk in what I hope will be a long and rewarding career in politics.”
Councillor Oliver became the youngest deputy leader in the country at the age 22 in January 2013.
Cut in claimant count shows Liberal Democrats are getting people back to work – Norman Lamb
The number of people claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance in North Norfolk has fallen by 313 people in the last year.
After the last election, there were 1,529 people claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance in North Norfolk, and there are now 1,187.
Norman Lamb said “This recovery would not be happening without the Liberal Democrats in Government. We have helped business create more than a million private sector jobs and now we are working to help create a million more. This is further proof our plan is working and we are successfully rebuilding a stronger economy, in a fairer society. I am not complacent about the future. I want us to have a strong economy in North Norfolk where everyone who wants to work is able to do so. The announcement last month shows that we have made very significant progress.”

Members usually enjoy an hour of relatively passive activity listening to a speaker. Last moth was different- they experienced a spell of mental activity, when the honorary quizmaster, David Brown, provided stimulation for the ‘little grey cells’.

Questions included the identity of Solomon’s mother, the dates of the Hundred Years War, the formalities for resigning as an MP which monarch entered into an illegitimate marriage with Maria Fitzherbert and who wrote the ‘Wealth of Nations’. Unfortunately, for those more erudite readers there were no prizes for the correct answers!

NORTH WALSHAM & BRADFIELD FLOWER CLUB
Following our recent AGM and lunch at The Beechwood, we have a new Chairman, Irene Morley, who takes over from Jennifer Adcock. Irene is already well known amongst members for her baking skills and, fortunately for us all, she is keen to continue baking along with her duties as Chairman. The other change is that Lynn Butcher has been elected as Treasurer, taking over from Sue McCreary. Jennifer and Sue were presented with cards and garden tokens in appreciation of their hard work and dedication to the club during their time on the committee. Our next club meeting is in The Catholic Church Hall in North Walsham, on Thursday 27 March at 2.30pm, when Vicky Hease, from Suffolk, who is also a teacher, painter and patchworker, will be demonstrating "Spring Fantasy". We offer free parking and refreshments from 2pm.
As a result of our fundraising last year, a cheque will be presented to a representative from the Quidenham Childrens' Hospice.
For Members new and old, subscriptions will be due and are still £20 for the year. Visitors’ fee remains at £4 per meeting.
We are excited to announce our first OPEN MEETING in The Atrium Theatre, on Thursday 29 May at 2pm. Nick Grounds, who is a NAFAS National Demonstrator, will be putting on a show called " A Gentle Plea For Chaos" starting at 2pm which will be followed by tea and home-made cakes. As well as being a wonderful floral designer, Nick is a talented and amusing speaker with plenty of experience gained as an auctioneer in Wisbech where he lives and works, so it promises to be a lovely afternoon to enjoy.
So, if you have not yet been to this new theatre or the Atrium, then this event offers a great opportunity to visit and to see a National Demonstrator. Tickets are just £10 and can be bought or reserved from Sue Bloomfield on 01692 500440. Glenis Dillon
London Museums Textiles and Art trip success
On a cold winter morning 25 Textile and BTEC Art students from Paston Sixth Form College set out on the 8.54am train to London for an inspirational trip visiting museums and art galleries.
The first museum visited was the Victoria and Albert, where students saw the Jameel prize, awarded annually for contemporary art inspired by Islamic starting points. The fashion that won was really detailed and beautiful. Students went off in all directions to take photographs and make drawings for new work back in the art room. Students moved on to the Garden Museum where the exhibition was of Fashion and the Garden, looking at the English love of rambling gardens and colourful flowerbeds. Students worked sat under a canopy of suspended flowers. Next on to London Bridge for the Fashion and Textile Museum and a selection of screen printed fabrics designed by international artists, including Picasso and Chagall and Dali. After an exhausting day, the students walked back to Spitafields along the South Bank in the evening light and ended up in an Italian Restaurant for Ravioli and Lasagne before catching the 8.30pm train home.
Melie said “It gave me insight and will inspire my final exam piece” Tina said “It was a different way to look at London, I’ve always been to shop before, but we walked for miles, past tourist sights, the Shard, Tower Bridge lit up in the dark and saw amazing things to inspire our work”.

year over 116 million journeys were made nationally by Railcard holders who on average saved £148 over the course of the year.
There are already railcards for 16-25s and families – this fills an important gap by helping older couples, or those without children.”
Lee Chambers 01692 666288 / 07788 788669
Norman Lamb: “New railcard will provide important travel boost for couples in North Norfolk” North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb has welcomed the launch of a new national railcard aimed at couples travelling together.
The Two Together Railcard is being launched by Britain’s train companies and is the first new national Railcard in 30 years.
Pairs of adults travelling together by train can use the card to save a third off the cost of their journey. The card is designed to fill a gap in the existing family of Railcards which give many passengers discounts on their journeys. Last 22
The card will cost £30 a year for two named people travelling together and savings will be available for travel throughout Britain in both Standard and First Class.
Commenting, Norman Lamb said “This Government is committed to tackling the cost of living. Liberal Democrats fought to stop any above-inflation rise in rail fares this year, and this new railcard will reduce fares by a third for couples who regularly travel together.
Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin MP said “Over the next five years, passengers will benefit from investment of more than £38 billion in our railways, which will mean faster, more reliable journeys to hundreds of destinations across the UK. Thanks to this innovative product, even more passengers can make the most of the many benefits of travelling by train.”

Council proud to support Hate Free Norfolk campaign
The campaign, supported by Norfolk County Council, Norfolk Police, the NHS, and other district councils, as well as North Norfolk District Council (NNDC), aims to raise the profile of hate crime by educating people on what it is, how it impacts on lives as well as encouraging the reporting of hate crime incidents.
People can become victims of hate crime because of an actual or perceived aspect of themselves, their appearance, and their lifestyle or because of who they associate with.
North Norfolk District Council Leader, Tom FitzPatrick, said “North Norfolk is one of the safest places to live in the country, but hate crime does exist often as a result of ignorance or prejudice and can have a significant impact on victims’ lives.
“The launch of the Hate Free Norfolk Pledge has the full support of NNDC and its Members. Our staff are committed to treating our customers fairly and with respect and as a Council, we will work with our partners and local community groups to tackle discrimination and intolerance, and to promote the rights of everyone equally. We aim to make north Norfolk a place where no one should suffer hate crime because of who they are and where no one feels that they should put up with it.”
Hate Free Norfolk Chairman, Michelle de Oude, said “The Pledge is something anyone can sign up to and stand up for the right of everyone in the county to live freeRANDALLS from hate. ELECTRICAL

Dear Margaret,
I help to run a self sufficient group of people who meet every Tuesday at Stalham Youth Club, Recreation Road, Stalham. It is primarily for people who have been mentally ill but anyone is welcome to join. The group is very casual and the main function is to provide somewhere for people to go who may otherwise be a bit lonely. We would especially welcome ladies because we only have one lady member. Tea and coffee are provided and one of the members cooks us a two course lunch. There is no charge on your first visit but after that we pay £4 each to cover food and drink and the rent of the premises. We meet from 11am until 2pm. Occasionally we go out for a change and sometimes we have a quiz. There are five pool tables that are free to use. I’m afraid that only limited help with transport is available. We have Chris in Trimingham, Gary in Catfield, David in Buxton and myself in North Walsham who will gladly give anyone a lift. If interested please contact me on 07919 865413 Yours sincerely, Richard T Baker

STAR PAVING SERVICES
North Walsham Table Tennis NWSCC Steal a Win Against Poachers
In the second division of the Star Paving Services North Norfolk League, NWSCC’s Chris Johnson, Phil Mole and James Morter hosted Poacher’s John Hancock (Snr) and Andy and Laura Marsh at North Walsham Sports Centre with Andy Marsh winning the opener in five against Mole. Morter then forced a decider after being two sets down, but Hancock moved Poachers into a 2-0 lead. Andy Marsh remained unbeaten, but the NWSCC trio won the remaining singles – all straight sets victories with the exception of Morter’s five set win against Laura Marsh. That meant a vital doubles which saw Mole and Morter defeat the Marshes 11-9, 11-9, 7-11, 10-12, 11-9 to seal NWSCC’s 6-4 win. On the adjoining table NWSCE’s Joel Lodge, Stuart Hook and Stan Baldock hosted Dropshot’s Alf Greer, Sally Homfray Davies and Alison Dunnett. Baldock picked up his first win of the season in straight sets against Dunnett. Homfray-Davies won a close game against Baldock 11-9, 14-12, 14-16, 11-9 and Greer beat Baldock in straight to pick up Dropshots second point. Lodge and Hook both beat Greer in five, both took maximums and

The following week the Sports Centre saw first division action. NWSCB’s Dennis Elliott, Paul Price and Simon Halliday hosted Special’s Jonathan Care, Martin Lawes and Ray Howe with good attacking from Halliday defeating Howe in four. Three other points went to the hosts – however these were all against Care who became unwell during the match and conceded his final clash with Halliday. Lawes took a maximum as his blocked defence conquered Elliott in three and he beat both Price and Halliday in four and teamed up with Howe for a four set doubles win that sealed Special’s 6-4 win – however perhaps the pivotal part of the contest was the clash between Howe and Elliott which saw the Special come back from 2-7 to win the decider 11-9. Meanwhile on the other table NWSCD welcomed back Mary Sawyer a matter of weeks after suffering broken and crushed toes. She joined Joe Kirkup and Chris Johnson (playing up) for a derby against NWSCA’s

Andy Beane, John Vaughan and Tom Baldock-Yaxley. NWSCA won 10-0 with Kirkup on the losing side of two epic five-setters – he had led both Vaughan and Beane by two sets to one with the latter winning 9-11, 11-5, 16-18, 11-9, 11-5. NWSCA also came through 10-0 against Aylsham A thanks to some clinical play from Baldock-Yaxley and effective top-spin from Beane. Peter Ward stretched both Vaughan and Beane to five, the rest of the battles were won by the hosts in straight. John Miller impressed with some fine majestic shots at times, while the match concluded with a 14-12 in the third doubles win for Beane and Baldock-Yaxley against Ward and Dave Johns.
