Issue 443 29th March 2014

Covering North Walsham, Aylsham and surrounding villages in association with the Cromer Times and Sheringham Independent

2014 is the 100th Birthday of the Brownie Guides and in North Walsham we started celebrating on 3 January at 6.45am on BBC Breakfast television!

We were filmed live from 'Hautbois House' Anglia Guiding near Coltishall. We sang songs and we all had a climb on the outside floodlit climbing wall. Between the live broadcasts we were treated to a lovely hot breakfast. When it began to rain we came indoors for circus skills and birthday cake. While the BBC television filming was going on Wally Web of Radio Norfolk also came and interviewed two of the Brownies, and when the BBC had finished at around 9am Anglia Television turned up so indoor archery was set up for the filming. All the girls enjoyed the morning despite the early start. Some of the Brownies and their leaders who had had the early start and the TV production excitement then loaded up the mini bus and drove to Butlins in Skegness to join 2,500 Brownies and their leaders for 'Starburst'. Starburst was for two nights with crafts and activities in the day and discos in the evenings. Thankfully we were on second sitting for the dining room - a lay in before breakfast!

Dia Espanol!

Pupils at Millfield Primary School in North Walsham said Hola! to Spanish traditions and culture in a fun packed day of Spanish activities. The children who got into the spirit of the day dressed in the traditional colours associated with Spain of red and yellow and classrooms were a wash of colour, which included many flamenco and matador costumes. The day was led by Ms Contreras, who had come to the school from the Canary Islands in October as part of a cultural enrichment programme funded by the British Council. Ms Contreras has been teaching Spanish to the pupils and has now set up an after school club for parents and pupils as well. Ms Contreras taught the children traditional dances in the school hall, while other activities were taking place in the pupils’ classrooms. The children had enormous fun creating artwork inspired by Spanish artists, cooking, model making and enjoyed a traditional Spanish lunch. For many this was the first time they had the opportunity to sample Spanish food and loved it, some pupils stated they wished they could have it every day!

Ava Craske a pupil in year 5 said “There were lots of things I liked, I enjoyed the dances it was really fun and I learnt new moves. I also loved the Spanish lunch the meatballs were really good.”

Top ambulance boss to address public meeting in Cromer

The new Chief Executive of the East of England Ambulance Service Trust, Anthony Marsh, will address residents of North Norfolk about his plans for the health emergency service.

Dr Marsh will be speaking at an Act on Ambulances campaign event and addressing the campaigners who fought for improvements when stories of poor response times were first highlighted more than two years ago. He will be the first Chief Executive to address members of the public since a number of damning reports from the Care Quality Commission were first issued over two years ago.

Anthony Marsh has joined the East of England Ambulance Service Trust (EEAST) on a part-time basis, also continuing to work with the ambulance trust in West Midlands. He was brought in after concerns over poor response times in the East - in particular rural areas like North Norfolk - and worries over savings within the service which had planned to reduce the ambulance fleet in the area.

The event will take place on Monday 14 April at 8pm in the Cromer Community Centre on Garden Street. Suggestions for questions can be submitted in advance to mail@actonambulances.co.uk and updated information about the event will be online at www.actonambulances.co.uk.

Denise Burke, an Act on Ambulances campaigner and Labour's prospective parliamentary candidate for North Norfolk, said "The Act on Ambulances campaign has been focusing on holding the ambulance trust and government health ministers to account over the failures within our local ambulance service.

I am confident that Dr Marsh is the right man to bring in the improvements that are needed within the trust, and I hope this year is going to be a turning point for EEAST. It is vital they are as transparent as possible going forwards, so I am delighted to announce this event taking place in North Norfolk on 14 April.

This is a public meeting so members of the public are both invited and encouraged to join us to hear what Dr Marsh has to say, and also to put questions to the man in charge of our ambulance service." North Walsham Times 443 March 29th 2014

Local Marmalade Maker Given Huge Business Boost by Award Win

Local preserves company Ollands Farm Foods, of Happisburgh, is set to taste sweet business success thanks to winning a prestigious food award.

Ollands Farm Foods from Short Lane in Happisburgh on the North Norfolk coast has just scooped two Bronze awards in the 9th World’s Original Marmalade Awards. Ollands Farm Foods won one of the marmalade world’s most prestigious accolades for its Seville Orange Marmalade and for its Seville Orange Marmalade with Whisky which both scored high marks for their appearance, colour, consistency, aroma and flavour.

The Awards took place at Dalemain in Cumbria on 1 & 2 March and kicked off National Marmalade Week (1-8 March), overseen by the awards’ organisers, which encourages people to try, buy or make marmalade. Owner Mary Ann Stuart said she was delighted to win the awards “This is a fantastic award for us in more ways than one! We’ve got our preserve pans at the ready to make lots more jars so please come and try it at Sheringham Market, Cromer Market and local farmers markets including Thorpe St Andrew, Taverham, Stalham and Hickling! We will also be at the Creake Easter Fair and Kelling Producers Market all over the Easter weekend”

Method Chop the cucumber into small chunks, mix all ingredients in a bowl adding the yoghurt last. Keep in the fridge and serve with dips and olives, delicious with a glass of wine.

Explosion of Youth Services in Rural North Norfolk

Four Youth Hubs, in Cromer, Mundesley, Sheringham and Stalham, have developed into thriving centres of positive activity, community involvement and emotional/ social development. The diverse range of activities that members have taken part in is remarkable and extensive: beach trips, theatre visits, campfire cooking, and IFS Motivational Defence sessions, intergenerational networking at Halsey House, conservation work with the Broads Authority;

advice and information on issues such as bullying and respect, relationships, sexual health, substance misuse, anger management and emotional wellbeing; consultations and collaborations with The Matthew Project (drugs and alcohol service), The Joy of Food, Smoke Free Norfolk, Community Sports, High Schools and local Police Services. Twelve young people from Stalham raised £200 for chosen charities, Macmillan and B-EAT.

“We make sure that all our activities are ‘youth-led’, so that we continue to meet the direct and expressed needs of the young people we work with,” says senior youth worker William Mills, who has been “immensely impressed by the passion and imagination of young people in North Norfolk, and their positive efforts to make a difference in their local community”.

Over the past year, MAP’s youth workers have made contact with over one hundred young people, aged 11-19, through the popular HUBs, and through Life Zones at nearby High Schools; MAP expects the project to receive ongoing funding and continue

expanding and developing.

Building on existing links within the community, the HUBs will increase their engagement through fundraising activities and social visits, attendance at the Cromer Carnival and other summer festivals, and inter-HUB projects and events. The groups will be twining with a school in Liberia, through email and Skype correspondence where young people will learn about each other’s communities, their similarities and differences.

If you, or a young person you know, are interested in attending one of the HUBs, or would like any further information, please contact William Mills on 07876 864281 or williammills@map.uk.net.

Patsy, one of our kittens, has recently returned to our care as she was not getting on with the resident cats and suffered several bouts of cystitis Cromer/Sheri which may have been related to this. A recent visit to the vets confirmed she had crystals in her bladder and she has been put on a special new food which, hopefully, will help resolve the problem. If, however, she does not respond to the treatment she will need further investigations to get to the bottom of the situation. Frequent visits to the litter tray do not bother her and she is a very confident little kitten, who enjoys a cuddle, but only in the mornings. Abandoned Snoopi finds friends at Animal Magic Dog Club

Snoopi has found some new friends at Animal Magic Dog Club where he was offered a place at puppy classes - he’s been off to visit our club photographer to pose for his picture to be taken too. Not all abandoned dogs are as lucky as Snoopi and members of Animal Magic work hard fundraising for local rehoming centres. You’ll find dogs and puppies of all ages, shapes and sizes looking for a home, so if you’re considering getting dog then please make a rehoming centre your first stop, you might just find your best friend waiting there for you.

Little Snoopi hit the headlines when at just fourteen weeks old he found himself abandoned on a freezing cold January night in Downham Market.

Luckily a passer-by heard a whimper from his pet carrier which had been hidden in a hedge on a residential street. Whilst being contained in a carrier kept Snoopi safe from traffic this also meant that had he not been found, he could have caught hypothermia. The RSPCA suspects that Snoopi was an unwanted Christmas gift and sadly his story isn’t unique.

January is an incredibly busy time for those working in animal rescue. It is when people tire of their new pet and decide a lifelong commitment isn’t for them. Thankfully Snoopi’s tale has a happy ending. He’s found his forever home here in North Norfolk.

Luckily his new family were watching the evening news when his plight was reported upon and were straight on the phone to offer him a home. This cheeky chappie has settled in well, he loves to play with squeaky toys and stealing his owners’ socks!

Animal Magic Dog Club based near North Walsham is a fun, family orientated club offering a wide range of training for puppies, junior and adult dogs. For more information on the club and classes available please call 01263 720730 or visit our web site www.animal-magix.co.uk.

Meet Naomi Brangwin - glass aritst - on April 5th

Following the very successful exhibition of Mary Randle and Lance Beeke during March, Naomi Brangwyn, glass artist will be exhibiting at The Gallery Norfolk from April 5th to 26th. You have the chance to meet Naomi on April 5th all day to discuss her work and techniques.

Every artist works in a medium, such as oils, watercolour, charcoal, stone or bronze. Naomi Brangwyn’s preferred medium is glass – stained glass. If those words suggest solemn church windows, then think again. Naomi’s pieces are lively, imaginative, a breath of fresh air – and perfectly scaled for a domestic setting.

Many of them evoke the landscapes and seascapes of East Anglia – she has lived in Suffolk since the 1980s, and on its coast since 2001. “Moving to a home by the sea was significant for both my life and for my artistic identity,” says Naomi. “It was a time for new beginnings – and one of those was my work with glass. Norfolk in particular inspires me with its unspoilt nature,” she continues. “It’s full of hidden secrets. You go round a corner in the road and a new view unfolds. The county’s vast skies dictate the mood as the light shifts in intensity and the

colours change ... energetic, calm or reflective.”

She does not, however, seek to portray specific locations: “It is more about using my imagination to capture an experience,” she says. “... A fun day on the beach with the warm sun and breeze on your cheeks, and lunch in the beach hut or a solitary walk with the sand between your toes."

“It’s fascinating to take something that moves and changes and to capture its spirit in something as still and delicate as a piece of glass,” she continues. “I never cease to be intrigued by the process of taking this hard, flat, brittle material and transforming it into sky or water, or something as soft and delicate as a field poppy.” Always exploring and always experimenting, Naomi uses traditional stained glass techniques, but produces art that is, as she says, “a unique combination of glass, lead and nature”.

Often, she will literally add an extra dimension by layering the glass – and by integrating pieces of decorative metal or found objects such as shells and pebbles. Engraving can also play a part. All this means that each of her pieces is different – this is art rather than design – and each

Naomi Brangwyn – Glass Artist 5th – 26th April 2014

Meet Naomi Brangwyn At The Gallery Norfolk, 10-5pm - 5th April 2014

is individually signed.

The Gallery’s owner, Polly Miller, explains that: “This is our first exhibition with Naomi, though her work has become closely associated with The Gallery Norfolk. The pieces we have chosen draw inspiration from Norfolk and its scenery, which is very much in keeping with the gallery’s ethos. With prices ranging from £30 to £395, small-scale pieces will be on show beside some quite ambitious and spectacular works. The great thing is that each of them will be right for someone’s home and that they open up new possibilities for display ... Yes, you can hang them on a wall, but you can also make a feature of them in a window. In a sense they are made of light, and each one offers its own ever-changing play of colours, lines and textures, so they really do bring a space alive.”

Did You Miss the Mary Randle and Lance Beeke exhibition in March?

If you did, you will be delighted to know that their work is still available at the Gallery.

They are two local painters, both endlessly fascinated by the play of light.

For all their shared luminosity, the two artists inhabit different

environments. Mary’s vivid, almost tactile paintings of flowers evoke intimate and stylish interiors, while Lance, with his atmospherically shaded landscapes, favours the open air. An example of each of their evocative work is alongside - so pop down to the Gallery for a triple viewing.

North Walsham Access and Independent Living Groups have now merged.

We shall still try and help with issues facing people disabled or able bodied. We are a member group of Equal Lives. We meet every second month on a Monday 10.30 - 1.30 in the St. Nicolas Rooms in the church yard with easy accessibility. Our next meeting is on 7 April. Refreshments available but advised to bring your own lunch, if not just pop in and see us. We will welcome old and new members. North Walsham Times 443 March 29th 2014

What’s On this April at The Atrium New plays, a film and the year’s big Variety Show are all in full swing for this April at The Atrium.

The Canada Boys, a new play by Rob John, tells the story of a group of Colman’s Mustard Factory workers in 1912, who are offered a new life the other side of the Atlantic. It’s funny sad and through-provoking, and also resonates with Norfolk voices and local locations. The play is presented by fEast Theatre, a company who are committed to developing and showcasing new work from the eastern region. The Canada Boys takes place on Tuesday 8 April at 7.30pm and tickets are £10 adults and £5 students/children.

Film only tickets are available at £6 and £4 concessions. The matinee café is open at 2.45pm and the film at 3.30pm, and the evening screening starts at 7pm, on Friday 11 April.

The popular matinee film is back this month with The Great Gatsby, last year’s new adaptation which stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan and Tobey Maguire. It’s New York City in 1922 and a would-be writer is drawn into the captivating world of the super-rich, theirs loves and

True Motion Dance

Joseph Ballard, Artistic Director said “It’s been a great start to the spring season so far, with shows doing really well so we’re encouraging people to book early. We enjoy presenting a varied programme from film, music and theatre and the local talent gets summed up in our big Variety Show at the end of the month. Support is growing and growing – as a new charity for the local area, that’s really important.”

The big show of the season is the annual Variety Show on Friday 25 April (7.30pm) and Saturday 26 April (2.30pm and 7pm), which will showcase local talent from groups such as True Whilst clearing out the family loft after a burst pipe, Alex Kearns Motion Dance, the discovered his grandfather’s old plate camera. It was made by North Norfolk prestigious camera makers Butcher & Sons of London around 1913. Ukulele Orchestra and belly Alex managed to get the camera working again after it was dried out. The camera was converted from using plates to film and paper and is now back to full working order. Alex used the camera to great effect on his AS level course at Paston Sixth Form College. The project investigates places in Norfolk such as St Benet’s Abbey, Norwich Cathedral and Bingham Priory which Paul Greeves were affected by Henry VIII’s Dissolution of Monasteries. Atrium favourites Joseph Ballard and Krissi Jae Kitson will once again take to the stage to co-host the show and keep the pace. Last year over 100 performers were featured, and families and people of all ages enjoyed the range of talent on show. Tickets are £9 adults, £6 concessions, family tickets are £27 and group booking discounts are also available.

Looking ahead to May, the theatre will be hosting a stage adaptation of Blackadder Goes Forth on 2 May and also Phil Beer of acoustic roots fame on 9 May.

The Atrium’s box office is open Wednesday to Friday afternoons, 01692 400080 or you can book online and check out more event listings at www.theatrium.org.uk. To make it even easier to buy tickets, you can also buy your tickets for the show from the Showcase Gallery which is in the town market place (open 7 days a week).

JAZZ TEAM AT THE GOAT

We frequently bring you information about the Norfolk Dixieland Jazz Band and particularly about its activities at The Goat Inn, Skeyton. The band started about five years ago and quickly established itself as one of the best of its type in the region. Crucial to its popularity, of course, is the quality of the musicians and their feel for the music they play.

Equally important, however, has been the band’s relationship with the owners of the Goat Inn. The band sees the venue as its home-base and six dates were planned for 2014. The events in January and March were so well attended, however and the atmosphere so good, that there will now be an additional date on

Aylsham Library

Sunday 6 April between the usual times of 1.30 p.m. and 4.30 p.m. Spokesperson for the band, Vic. Brown, says “The Goat is a great place to play. You can just drop in for a drink or have a meal in the restaurant or the garden room where the band plays. In the summer everything moves into the garden. Admission is free and the aim of the owners and the band was to turn the venue into North Norfolk’s premier traditional jazz venue. We feel that the success has been due to the team approach between everybody at The Goat and the band”. Working together isn’t just a

The Old Churchyard I lean against the old church gate, The churchyard has improved of late. The tombstones always cold and grey So not look so bad today.

The sun shines from an azure sky, White puffs of cloud slide slowly by. Some kind soul has cut the grass Showing bright celandines along the path. White doves coo quietly in the tower, A robin sings high on a bough. Soft green now cloaks all the trees, Daffodils nod in the breeze, Suddenly dark clouds have come, Now snowflakes obscure the sun. The weather changes every day, It’s April, please no snow in May!

Council announces new Cabinet member North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) Leader, Tom FitzPatrick, announced that Councillor Glyn Williams would be joining NNDC’s Cabinet following the announcement at the Full Council meeting on 26 February that Councillor Trevor Ivory had decided to stand down from the Cabinet.

Mr Williams, who lives in Long Common, Swanton Abbott, was first elected to the council in May 2011. His ward includes Felmingham, Skeyton, Suffield, Swanton Abbott, Westwick and Worstead.

He came to local prominence in 2008 as chairman of Cetag - Coltishall Eco-Town Action Group - a campaigning body of 14 parish councils surrounding the former RAF Coltishall base which were opposed to

a proposal to turn it into an eco town.

Mr Williams will join the seven existing members of the ruling Conservative Cabinet, Tom FitzPatrick (Leader), Rhodri Oliver (Deputy Leader), Angie Fitch-Tillett, Russell Wright, John Lee, Benjie Cabbell Manners and Wyndham Northam. His portfolio will include Leisure and Cultural Services and Customer Services.

Cllr. FitzPatrick said: “Cllr. Trevor Ivory has made a huge contribution to both North Norfolk District Council and the Conservative Group since we took over the administration of the Council nearly three years ago. Trevor has made a real impact in areas such as Housing and Legal Services and his vision in establishing the Big Society Fund has greatly benefited communities and organisations across the whole of North Norfolk.

The past three months have turned out more or less as forecast although day and night temperatures have been higher mainly because the high pressure area has not been as far north as I thought it was going to be.

We still have a maritime climate regardless of this winter’s antics and the past three that were cold and often snowy. The change seems to be, and it has been for some time, that there are more occasions when the weather pattern get set for a few months with little variation. This winter was a good example of that when storm after storm came across from a cold North America and three large amounts of moisture at the south and west of Britain. Most storms turned north to the west of us so we were spared the main forces of these depressions. The one that did cross the north of Scotland did, however, have a major impact on our coastline but thereafter the very vast majority stayed out to the west bringing us a lot of southerly gales but much less in the way of rain than further west. Frost and snow were notable absentees.

The next three months will see more of a mix of weather but that does not rule out the rogue air mass turning up out of season and at this time of the year the power of the sun needs to be taken into account.

support he has given me personally during my time as Leader, particularly during the early days. The group is sorry to see him leave Cabinet and he leaves with both our regrets and good wishes for the future. I am pleased that we will continue to have the benefit of his knowledge and enthusiasm.

“I am delighted to welcome Cllr. Williams to the Cabinet. Glyn has had a long career working as an officer in local government. He has brought a wealth of experience to the group and I am pleased that we will be able to make full use of this expertise in his portfolio responsibilities. I am looking forward to working even more closely with him in the coming months.”

The RSPCA East Norfolk Branch has several dogs looking for new homes and lots of cats. The animals featured here are just two of them looking for their new forever homes. Meet Junior he is a six month old Staffordshire Bull Terrier and is a lovely boy, he walks well on the lead and does not mind other dogs. He already knows some commands and will need someone to continue with his training. The other is Ginger Legs, he is a lovely cat and loves company, he is just not very good with his own kind.

Our Support Charity shop at 11 Mundesley Road in North Walsham helps towards the care of these animals and is in desperate need of donations especially clothes. If you are having a spring clean then please think of us and drop them in to the shop. Dawn and the team would be really grateful along with all the animals. If you would like to rehome one of our animals call our adoption line on 07867 972870

Miramar Open Day

16 years of Community Singing of The Crucifixion

We held our first open afternoon on Saturday 15th March and were overwhelmed by the amount of people through the doors.

Having never held such an event we were unsure of the response, however we need not have worried. As soon as 2pm arrived people flocked to the purpose built surgery to have a look behind the scenes. We had demonstrations of the ultrasound machine, digital X-ray processor and various critters to see under the microscope. People had the opportunity to look in theatre and see how a spay operation would be performed, whilst in the prep room at the dental table a mock tooth extraction was under way with the children performing the extractions!

We had various associates in the spacious waiting rooms including Dave Brice our dog behaviourist, Homefinders grey hound rescue,

Cantamus Choir and friends will reunite to perform Sir John Stainer’s “The Crucifixion” which includes the beautiful “God So Loved the World” on Good Friday 18 April in St Martin Church, Overstrand at 7pm.

NNCLT and Animal Magic with games and raffles, money raised by our tombola went to NNCLT at Beeston Regis.

We were delighted to see many of our regular clients coming along to see just what goes on when they leave their much loved pets with us for any procedures and welcomed many new clients through the doors too. Overall it was a really good afternoon enjoyed by staff and visitors alike, with plenty of tea and cake to finish off.

Our thanks to our clients, old and new for their continued support.

Look out for the next Miramar event - The Dog Show -at the carnival!

Biology students research solutions to world food issues Students studying AS level Biology at Paston Sixth Form College were able to appreciate at first hand a range of cutting edge research which takes place at the John Innes Centre in Norwich. Their Biology coursework requires them to identify a problem, and then describe how scientists might solve the problem, and what ethical, environmental and economic issues this might raise.

The students were rather spoiled for choice with topics, as researchers working in the field of nitrogen fixation, ash dieback, finding new antibiotics, potato blight, and finally the production of novel foods with higher levels of nutrients, such as the purple tomato, explained the principles of their work.

The students had a tour of the site, visiting in turn the seed bank (that maintains stocks of ancient crops), and the genome analysis facility, that sequences DNA and the huge glass houses with an array of experiments. Given it was a cold February day the visit to the wheat growing experiments was popular as the climate inside the glasshouses was meant to simulate mid -June.

Biology teacher Julian Thomas said “ Paston Sixth Form College has a long tradition of links with the centre and we always feel that being able to meet and talk to scientists face to face gives students the best possible chance of producing the best possible coursework”.

A gift that lasts a lifetime

St Nicholas House School in North Walsham is to take the offer of a ‘Free Taster Day’ one step further by offering a ‘Free Taster Term’, worth £1,595. Think about what your child could learn in a day – now discover what they can experience in a whole term!

A spokesman says “We understand the initial step into independent education can be very daunting for some parents, not only financially, but also emotionally. Families have lots of questions and often in every independent school prospectus these questions are all addressed the same way, which can be overwhelming. Instead, come and see us, come experience us first hand, for a tuition-free whole term. We believe that this is the only way for families to truly appreciate all the benefits of a quality education and the lifelong opportunities and results that come with it.

Paul Grisewood, director of St Nicholas House School is a teacher and parent himself, so he appreciates the benefits of a good start in life. “The greatest gift you can give your child is a good education; one that will prepare them for the future, educate them in all aspects and instill in them the confidence and positive attitudes necessary for today’s competitive world. Many people view independent schools as ‘toff schools’, but this is far from the case today. St Nicholas House School provides a quality education for much less you think and we take pride in our family atmosphere where students of all abilities have their needs met.

For more information on our FREE taster Term, being offered for next term only, please contact us today. Telephone 01692 403143 or email admissions@stnicholashouse.com

Celebrating World Book Day at St Nicholas House School

On Thursday 6 March, pupils at St Nicholas House School celebrated World Book Day with a range of literary events throughout the day.

Children in Forms 2 and 3 followed a ‘Worst Witch’ theme for the day and pretended to be trainee witches and wizards at ‘Miss Cackle’s Academy’. They spent a morning creating and writing their own spells and later on conjured them up in the school garden! Form 4 pupils brought in their favourite books to show to their friends and then wrote book reviews of them. The tempting aroma of teddy biscuits could be smelt from Nursery and Form 1 and the younger children were later treated to readings of stories written especially for them by the children in Form 5. In the afternoon all the children (and some of the teachers) changed into their pyjamas and onesies for a book mark making competition and bedtime stories. A great day was had by all!

STAR PAVING SERVICES

North Walsham Table Tennis

NWSCC and NWSCB Both Reach Handicap Doubles Cup Semis

The quarter-final of the Handicap Doubles Cup took place at Antingham Village Hall as NWSCA’s Andy Beane (D), Tom BaldockYaxley (A) and John Vaughan (G) hosted Crosscourt’s John Welsh (G), Eric Dolden (L) and Derek Sidaway (K). With NWSCA one win away from a semi-final berth, BaldockYaxley and Vaughan won the first set against Welsh and Dolden (+10) on the sudden death golden point. The second set also reached 20-20, but this time Dolden fooled Vaughan with a crafty serve to ensure Crosscourts survival. The NWSCA duo won the deciding set 21-17 and then the hosts took the one dead rubber that was played to complete their 6-2 match win. Another home team was assured a place in the semis as two met in a derby quarter-final at North Walsham Sports Centre – NWSCB’s Dennis Elliott (B), Simon Halliday (D) and Paul Price (F) faced NWSCD’s Joe Kirkup (E), Philip Stone (F) and Phil Mole (F). NWSCD won the opener but with Halliday’s serves a key factor NWSCB took a 3-1 lead.

NWSCD kept the pressure on by winning the next two battles but in the end, the pivotal moment turned out to be in the first set of the eighth battle between Elliott and Halliday and Kirkup and Stone (+4) as Elliott won five points on his serve at 15-20 down. The NWSCB duo won the golden point and took the second set 21-16 to seal their 5-3 victory. With NWSCA and NWSCB in different semis an all North Walsham final remains a possibility.

There was also a derby in the first division as NWSCA beat NWSCB 9-1 where all of Halliday’s singles went the distance with his point coming against Beane. At the ACT Centre, Aylsham A’s Dave Johns, John Miller and Peter Ward hosted NWSCD’s Mary Sawyer, Joe Kirkup and Edna Stone (playing up). Johns and Kirkup split the first two sets of the opener before the latter won a pivotal third 14-12. The start of the fourth brought something of a rarity – on very rare occasions

it is possible to see three lets as the ball hits the top of the net, here Johns served five in succession! Kirkup sealed his win 11-8 in that set before going on to lose to Miller from two sets to one up before edging out Ward 12-10 in the decider. The smashes of Sawyer saw her keep in control as she beat Miller 12-10 in the third, but the rest of the match went Aylsham’s way – Stone battled bravely but lost out 11-9 in the fifth to Johns and the hosts won the remaining battles in straight as Aylsham A won 7-3. Finally NWSCC’s Phil Mole, James Morter and Chris Johnson hosted Aylsham B’s Hugh Rout, Neil Powell and Ian Potter in the second division. Johnson beat Powell in five after originally being two sets up while Morter defeated Powell in four. Rout and Potter both took braces but a maximum from Mole set up a vital doubles which NWSCC won in five to edge the match 6-4.

PANTOMIME THANKS

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everybody who came and supported the North Walsham Players pantomime ‘Babes in the Wood’, at North Walsham Community Centre on Friday 28 February and Sunday 2 March.

The panto was raising money for this year’s chosen charity East Coast Truckers, and after all expenditure had been paid we are able to add £200 to our year’s total for the charity. The Players worked hard right from the start, to make it one of their best shows yet with plenty of audience participation. The musical

panto featured excellent costumes, beautifully painted scenery and special effects which made for a great looking production. The cast consisted of around 30 people, one of our biggest casts for a while. I’m glad to say that everybody involved with the show thoroughly enjoyed themselves and would like to thank everybody for attending both performances and look forward to seeing them at future shows.

I would like to say a special thank you to everybody involved in making the show the success it was, including the cast also the

technical crew, backstage and front of house staff. Lastly I would like to say a special thank you to Carl Bird Ltd for help and support and also the following local businesses for kindly sponsoring the show - Victory Explorers, Paul Oakes Collectables & MW Motor Services.

New faces are also welcome aged 7+, whether you wish to dance, act, sing or just help backstage etc. If you’d like to take part and raise money for local charities then why not join. We don’t charge for joining and there are no costly subscriptions to pay. Anybody interested in joining should contact Colin on 01692 402116 Colin Jeary, Director, North Walsham Players
