Victory Explorers

Covering North Walsham, Aylsham and surrounding villages in association with the Cromer Times and Sheringham Independent

Victory Explorers have decided that they would like a trendier uniform that they could wear when they are out and about in the community – ‘the aim is that people will get to know who we are & will raise our profile’.

They are still busy fund raising for their Norjam 2014 trip in August. It is hoped that they can raise enough funds to buy some equipment like a Burco boiler, catering sized cookware & a couple of new tents. This will mean that they no longer have to beg and borrow from other people.

There will be a Jumble Sale on Saturday 26 April at The Black Swan rooms from 11am -1pm (not 27th at the Scout HQ as previously advised).

The Explorers and some Scouts will also be doing a Sponsored Bike ride from North Walsham to Aylsham to Wroxham & then back to North Walsham on Wednesday 28 May.

If you can help them in anyway please contact 01692 406415 victory_explorers@hotmail.co.uk

No 1 Composer to present Masterclass at Auden Theatre “Never before have I been so moved by my own writing”. With these amazing words

internationally acclaimed composer Patrick Hawes introduced over 100 members of Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society to the music which they have commissioned him to write to commemorate the centenary of the outbreak of the Great War.

A few days ago, closely followed by BBC television cameras (in preparation for a report later in the year), Mr Hawes took time out from a very busy schedule talking about his latest album Angel which is currently number one in

Bob Cumber, chairman of the Society, said “None of this would have been possible without invaluable grants for the arts from Arts Council England, North Norfolk District Council Big Society Fund and the Ernest Cook Trust. Every member of the choir is hugely excited about this once in a lifetime project and greatly looking forward to sharing this wonderful music at the workshop and premiere performances.”

Called Eventide this 45 minute choral work will be performed for the first time in Norwich Cathedral on Saturday 12 July with the English Chamber Orchestra and soprano soloist Elin Manahan Thomas.

Prior to the world premiere performance Patrick Hawes will lead a Workshop in the Auden Theatre on Saturday 17 May. He will talk about the process of composing, referring in particular to Eventide. There will be opportunities for those who wish to sing sections of the new work. This will be a unique opportunity to learn direct from one of the world’s leading composers. There are FREE places available for school children – for further information contact info@sheringhamandcromerchoral.co.uk

the classical music charts. He took the choir through its paces to learn not just how to sing this beautiful music but also properly understand why he has chosen to commemorate the life of Norfolk’s very own First World War heroine Edith Cavell. Many of the sacred texts chosen by his poet-priest brother Rev Andrew Hawes

North Walsham Market Cross WI

Kim welcomed us all to a very well attended April meeting, which commenced with the singing of Jerusalem. Our speaker for the evening was Mrs Ellen Howe who gave us an entertaining talk and demonstration on Strawcraft and Corn Dollies. Straw use in the past and today are numerous and include the building industry, constructing haystacks, bedding, plaiting, bonnet and boaters and

(who compiled the libretto) were clearly close to the heart of nurse Cavell when she was in prison in Belgium awaiting execution. These are sung alongside quotations from her letters to her family and her nurses. The whole experience is very poignant and moving.

Workshop tickets are available from the Auden Theatre Box Office 01263 713444 at just £15 (just state Rose Villa offer when booking). Tickets for the world premiere in Norwich Cathedral can be obtained from the Theatre Royal Box Office 01603 630000 or via

rope making, historically the previous year's Corn Dolly would be broken up over the newly ploughed field in Spring to ensure fertility of the soil. We were told that the wheat used prior to 1950s was much taller but with the introduction of combine harvesters on show for the first time at the 1951 Festival of Britain, a shorter wheat had to be found that the combines could manage, and so started the decline of the Corn Dolly. After Ellen's excellent demonstration all of us had the opportunity to make and decorate a Corn Dolly and I think we were all surprised with our achievements. Sylvia Le Mottée gave a vote of thanks to Ellen for a very enjoyable hands-on evening.

Thank you to Mrs Joan Etherington who gave an interesting, humorous and detailed account of her day as our delegate at the recent Federation Annual Meeting at St.Andrew’s Hall Norwich.

The Darts group has its first match of the new league at Rollesby on 22 April and the Craft groups next meeting is at Stephanie’s on 1 May. Any member interested in either of these pursuits please contact Margaret Bane or Stephanie Cooper. Members are reminded that donations of tins are requested for the fun day in the park on 9 June.

For May we have our Resolution meeting and also a Beetle Drive. We meet on the second Wednesday of the month and we are now installed into our new venue at The St. Nicholas Room (this is accessed through the main St Benet Hall door. and the start time is now 7.30pm. News from the White Horse Overstrand with Head Chef Nathan Boon

At Last summer seems to be on its way, the evenings are warmer and our customers are beginning to enjoy our garden area.

Our Bouncy Castle will be installed in the garden for the May Bank Holidays and will stay until the end of summer. Children love playing on it and it is a welcome addition to our garden play area. We are planning to extend our ‘Kids Eat Free’ offer for a few more weeks so why not take advantage of this great lunchtime deal. Available Monday to Friday from 12 noon to 3pm the offer allows two children (per adult eating) to eat free from the Children’s Menu when the adult purchases a main meal from our lunchtime menu. Don’t forget our great Sunday Roasts served every Sunday from 12 noon, or book a table in our restaurant and enjoy an evening out. When ever you visit you are certain of a warm welcome a choice of local real ales, a superb wine list and of course some of the best food in North Norfolk.

Nathan’s recipe Passion Fruit Pavlova

Ingredients (recipe serves 8) 6 passion fruit 6 egg whites 350g caster sugar 2 teaspoons cornflour 1 teaspoon white wine vinegar Pinch of salt 600ml double cream

Preheat oven to 140c. Lightly grease a lined baking tray. Whisk the egg whites in a large bowl with a pinch of salt until stiff peaks appear, slowly add sugar to meringue until it goes stiff and shiny, and then add corn flour and vinegar. Drop large spoonfuls of meringue onto the baking tray and spread each one roughly to 10cm round. Bake for 45 minutes, until top of meringue is pale in colour and of a marshmallow consistency in the middle.

Are you one of the Missing Million?

Kidney Research UK are running a campaign called the ‘Missing Million’ in the Anglia region this month.

Paul Welsh

There are three million people in the UK who are at risk of chronic kidney disease, but only two million are registered with their GP as having chronic kidney disease (CKD), sometimes called “The Silent Killer”.

The aim of the campaign is to try to find the ‘missing million’, and a website www.missingmillion.co.uk has been launched for this purpose, where people can take a free kidney health check, and request an information pack about kidney disease.

Dialysis patient Paul Welsh from North Walsham is backing the campaign. He was first diagnosed with kidney problems when he was just seven years old and has been a dialysis patient since he was 35. Having undergone previous unsuccessful transplants Paul is now back on haemodialysis four hours three times a week and also faces dietary constraints.

Paul explains ‘In most people, kidney disease does not display any obvious symptoms, hence ‘the silent killer’ tag. Sometimes there are no obvious signs at all until it's too late to prevent permanent kidney damage. It's better to be safe than sorry- go and see your GP if you are at all concerned’.

if not now, when The if not now, when community woodland is tucked away in Suffield, between Aylsham and North Walsham.

The woodland was created in April 2002 after the death of David Hood and is open to all. Complete with an orchard, labyrinth, interesting architectural features and a wetland meadow, it's the ideal spot for a picnic and gentle stroll.

David Hood bought Home Farm, Suffield in 1974 which included a 4.5 acre field. During his lifetime it was used for grazing cattle and horses from the local riding school and it was only during the final weeks leading up to his death of cancer that David conceived the dream of the if not now, when community woodland. In a very short space of time solicitors setup

- a hidden gem in North Norfolk

trust funds, architects drew up plans and friends were approached with a view to becoming trustees. By the time of his death in April 2002, the legalities were completed and a charitable trust was set up so that the if not now, when community woodland could begin to grow.

The woodland is divided into two distinct areas. One half is a wet land meadow, covered in an abundance of flora and fauna including a spectacular display of Meadow buttercup in late April/early May. These habitats are in serious decline which makes the meadow at Suffield rather special and in 2007 the meadow was awarded the status of a County Wildlife Site (CWS).

The other half of the if not now, when woodland is managed more formally and has been planted with a mixture of fruit trees.

NORTH WALSHAM IN BLOOM

As most of you will have seen, we have made great strides with the Grammar School road bed. In June we will be adding bedding to this site and then it should look really spectacular. Unfortunately as the average age of all ‘In Bloomers’ is around 70 ,these sort of projects are very hard going. We badly need some younger people in order to proceed along our present path, as in the autumn we intend, if possible, to make a start on the second bed.

Our summer planting starts on 2 June for two weeks, so please help if

Dotted around are some re-constructed architectural features, originally collected and treasured by David but never used in his various renovation projects. A rather interestingly shaped three metre mound winds its way through the trees, to tell you any more would spoil it, but you need to climb the steps to get the joke.

This year the woodland is holding a couple of events to raise awareness and fundraise. For those early risers, hearing and identifying our feathered friends in a Dawn Chorus Walk on 10 May. On 21 June there will be Moth Night and on Saturday 11 October the wood, in conjunction with Suffield Village Hall, will hold its first Apple Day complete with tours, apple folklore talks, cider cafe and much, much more.

you can – please contact Muriel on 01692 400717 or Marion on 01692 405211.

The coffee morning on 10 April was a great success and our thanks must go to Christine Boggis of Orchard Farm Plants who as usual brought some wonderful plants along to help us with the morning. Thanks as well to the helpers for all their work and all the people who made scones for us to sell. We will be having another Coffee Morning on 18 September as well as a Town Collection and further Plant Stall on 12 June. Life never stands still for long!

Phil Beer in Concert at The Atrium

Phil Beer, one of the most popular ambassadors for folk and roots music, is in concert at The Atrium, North Walsham on Friday 9 May.

Best known as the multi-instrumental wizard of highly regarded and popular acoustic roots outfit, Show of Hands, Phil will be showcasing his virtuoso skills on slide, Spanish and tenor guitar, cello-mandolin, fiddle, mandolin and South American cuattro, not to mention contributing rich vocals.

His long-standing partnership with songwriter Steve Knightley has propelled Show of Hands forward as a high profile band in the roots and world music arena, selling out the Royal Albert Hall four times and three-time winners at the BBC Folk Awards (Best Duo, Best Original Song and Best Live Act). Show of Hands’ current album ‘Wake the Union’ has received huge critical acclaim throughout 2013.

Phil’s musical pedigree is impressive. He has played and toured with many of the best known names in the folk and rock world, including the Arizona Smoke Revue, Johnny Coppin and The Albion Band. He toured with Mike Oldfield and guested on The Rolling Stones’ ‘Steel Wheels’ album.

Constantly in demand to produce other artists’ albums Phil somehow still finds time to tour with his own roots/rock band - and his UK solo tour in 2014 sees him performing at The Atrium for the very first time. Tickets £12 01692 400080 Concerts starts 7.30pm

Friends of Friesenried Association

The North Walsham Friends of Friesenried Association are well into planning their visit to Friesenried, Bavaria in Germany during July of this year. Our role is easy as all we have to do is “turn up” to enjoy what has always been a well organised and interesting visit programme.

We are travelling by coach for the first time

since 1994 and many are looking forward to the change. A lesson learnt was that trips at the start of the school holidays have great competition for airline seats. We came second but the journey should be interesting none the less.

We are pleased that forty are making the trip and in these numbers we include six A’ level

German students from Paston College who all hope to put their German to the test. Along with the driver there will be 10 first time visitors.

Before we go there is time for our usual fund raising functions of our town centre cake and plant stall followed by us taking part (dressed as Bavarians) in the annual North Walsham Town Fun Day. Sunshine please!

Act now to secure your vote says Local Returning Officer

With the European Parliamentary election taking place on Thursday 22 May, the Local Returning Officer for North Norfolk is urging voters to make sure they are registered to vote in time.

“People are talking about the elections, but you’ll only be able to have your say on who represents you in the European Parliament if you’re registered to vote by the deadline of Tuesday 6 May”, said Sheila Oxtoby, Chief Executive of North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) and Local Returning Officer for North Norfolk for the European

TOWN AND COUNTRY CARS

Parliamentary election.

“Registering is quick and simple. All you have to do is visit www.northnorfolk.org/elections and print off a registration form or call NNDC Electoral Services on 01263 516046 or 516317.

“Even if you think you’re already registered, it’s really important to double check. Many people think they are automatically registered because they pay council tax, but this isn’t true. If you’re unsure, you can call your local authority to check.”

When you want long distance private hire, who're you gonna call? OK, so maybe not GhostBusters, but you can try...............

We can take you to airports, ferries, universities, pop concerts, London shows, sports venues, etc, etc. We will also happily transport you to destinations in Europe, including Paris, Brussels, Amsterdam, Strasbourg, Berlin, et al. North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Patsy, the little kitten with bladder problems, has now been given a clean bill of health and is available for homing. At her final visit to the vets a urine sample indicated she was now completely clear of crystals in her bladder and after a few more days on her special food she will be able to revert to ordinary cat food.

Towards the latter part of last year we had an e-mail from a young lady called Shar at the Norwich and Peterborough Building Society advising us she was in charge of nominating the charities they help and asking if there was any way they could help us. Although restricted in what they can donate she wondered whether we needed any equipment or cat carriers. We responded by saying that we would be delighted for any Stephanie with Shar and David on their visit to Dilham help they could offer and after visiting Shar at her workplace were able to advise her how much money various items cost if obtained from our before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any suppliers. At the beginning of the year Shar was very happy to tell us particular cat is being fostered. If, however, you are interested in that our request for help had been successful and she had a cheque for receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten please ring 07880 256948 (to £259 for us to purchase the equipment. These items were duly purchased see if you are eligible for a voucher). and Shar, together with her work colleague David, came down to Dilham recently to formally hand the equipment over to us. The cat trap and restraining basket have already been out on loan to catch two feral cats that have been caught, neutered and returned to site, the cat basket with its distinctive red May is a busy month for us at Miramar Vets as its RAW (Rabbit Awareness Week) and Nahandle has also been used to transport tional VN month (Veterinary Nursing awareness) and we are launching our new puppy socialicats at Dilham to the vets and we are sation course at Sheringham surgery. Colleagues at Sainsbury’s North Walsham Go The Extra Mile for Sport Relief and raise over £3400

Sainsbury’s North Walsham went the extra mile in their fundraising for Sport Relief, raising over £3400. It comes after the retailer announced a fundraising total of over £6.5 million, making it the biggest corporate donation on the night and £1 million higher than the retailer’s support in 2012.

Customers and colleagues got behind Sainsbury’s North Walsham fundraising activities for this year’s Sport Relief, which began with a colleagues’ pancake tossing competition on 4th March. Colleagues also took part in a static bike ride outside the store with support from The Victory Swim and Fitness Centre which took place on Thursday 20 March. Customers supported a very successful tombola on Friday 21 March. On Sunday 23 March the Sainsbury’s North Walsham night shift completed a relay walk from their store to the Sainsbury’s store in Great Yarmouth. Eight night workers walked “Out in the Light” and three (plus the sister of one) walked the whole distance in just eleven hours.

Colleagues, Sue Plummer, Lindsay Smith and Honor Griffin took part in the first ever Sainsbury’s Sport Relief Games six mile run in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park on Sunday 23 March. Meanwhile, Sainsbury’s Chief Executive Justin King, took part in his final Sport Relief Mile challenge before he leaves

colleagues, Sue Plummer and Lindsay Smith.

Justin has been a great supporter for Sport Relief, having done four Sport Relief Mile Challenges since 2008.

Sainsbury's North Walsham night shift on their long distance walk

the company in July. Justin smashed his fundraising target of £70,000 by running 17 regional miles across the UK, raising over £104,000, with money still coming in. Justin’s challenge included a mile in Cambridgeshire near the Coldhams Lane Sainsbury’s store where he ran alongside North Walsham store

Chief Executive Justin King said “I'm proud to announce this year marks our biggest fundraising for Sport Relief, raising over £6.5m for the charity. I've enjoyed every minute - and mile of it – and it was great to run with Sue and Lindsay from North Walsham at my East of England mile.”

The Museum of the Broads

If you haven’t yet visited the Museum of the Broads at Stalham Staithe, come in 2014! We have activities for families and plenty of unusual displays – you may have seen a coypu, but how about a lifeboat that was dropped from the air? Plus, our steam boat Falcon runs on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and event Sundays. There’s something for all ages, and dogs are welcome too. Free entry to café and shop and we also have a great picnic area by the river for our visitors to enjoy.

Around 30 volunteers and staff worked hard all winter to re-vamp displays, re-decorate the Museum, and overhaul our steam boat, Falcon. New for 2014 are displays of a model yacht built by a teenaged apprentice boat builder in 1918, items from the old Stalham Pharmacy and Roys of Coltishall (yes, Coltishall came before Wroxham!), a children’s mascot called ‘Dolly Duckling’, a ‘land boat’ for our younger visitors to steer, and much more besides at our unique waterside setting.

From mid-June, our must see exhibition, ‘Broadland During the First World War’, will be on display at the Museum. The exhibition features a film made, illustrated and animated by students from Stalham High School, and includes displays relating to the home front and to life on the front line. We hope it will be a fitting tribute to those who lived and died in Broadland during the Great War.

Events for May: Enjoy the Sheringham Shantymen at Hoveton Village Hall on Sat 2 May, bag a bargain at our Boat and Fishing Jumble on Sunday 11May, bring the family for a Teddy Bears’ Picnic on the evening of Friday 16 May, and learn to weave on Saturday 17 May. Contact us for prices and full details.

We’re at Stalham Staithe, NR12 9DA. Phone 01692 581681 or see our website, www.museumofthebroads.org.uk. And remember, if you join as a Friend of the Museum, you get free entry all year.

New ambulance boss: Two years needed to deliver the

improvements needed at ambulance trust It will take two years to bring our local ambulance trust up to a good standard, Norfolk’s top ambulance boss has claimed.

The new Chief Executive of the East of England Ambulance Trust Dr Anthony Marsh was outlining his plans at an Act on Ambulances meeting in Cromer earlier this month – his first public speaking event since he took over the role in December.

Dr Marsh told the audience that the average ambulance response time for North Norfolk had fallen from 27 minutes for life-threatening emergencies to 18 minutes over the first three months of 2014, which he said showed signs of progress. However there was still work to be done, with the campaigners’ latest statistics showing that in February 2014

only 35pc of calls for the district were being met within the 8 minute target – well below the 75pc expectation of Trusts.

The ambulance chief explained that his first goal was to ensure safety of both patients and staff by investing in new vehicles, additional “home grown” paramedic paramedics, and more ambulance hours which would then lead to improvements in response times. He was also critical of his predecessors’ attempts at rota redesigns, which had an over-reliance on Rapid Response Vehicles rather than Double Staffed Ambulances.

He answered a variety of questions which included the crisis in A&E, long-term funding

Norfolk Wherry Brass in Finals

Norfolk Wherry Brass is delighted to have qualified again this year for the National Brass Band Finals following its success at the London and Southern Counties Regional Contest. This is the second time in three years that the band has represented the region and they are hoping to repeat their success from 2012 when they won and became National Champions of their section.

The band has members from all across the county and ages range from 14 to over 70. Theo Oxley, from Sheringham, is the youngest member of the Band and the first success of the band’s recently established Academy Band which teaches and trains new players. This was Theo’s first contest experience so he was over the moon with the result.

for the service, and contracts for private ambulances.

Denise Burke, who chaired the meeting and is Labour’s Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for North Norfolk, said “Dr Marsh has set some clear priorities for turning around the trust and improving performance in North Norfolk. It will take time to recruit and train new staff and get more ambulances on the road but we welcome his ambitions.

Act on Ambulances will monitor progress closely to ensure that North Norfolk gets the ambulance service it needs for its ageing population in remote rural/coastal areas and influx of tourists.

Any local residents experiencing issues with the ambulance service can contact us for help in raising the matter with the trust. We have invited Dr Marsh back to North Norfolk in a year's time to see what progress has been made.”

Mothers’ Union

The Reverend Alan Robson was our speaker in April. Alan began by referring to the story of Joseph, Jacob's favourite son, and his coat with long sleeves (considered to be 'posh' in those days) which illustrates God’s ability to turn evil into good and went on to outline the providence of God in his own life.

Our next meeting is on Tuesday 13 May at 2.30pm.in the St Nicholas Room when Sandra Sacks and Sandra Bendal, MU speakers, will talk about 'Away from it all Holidays', a Mothers' Union holiday scheme to help families who are experiencing stress in their life. Visitors and new members are always welcome. For more information please contact Ann Herd on 402705. In association with www.northwalshamdeals.co.uk

GoGoDragons! will fire up Norwich in 2015

Following on from the amazing success of GoGoGorillas! in the summer of 2013, Break and Wild in Art are delighted to announce GoGoDragons! for summer 2015, bringing more love and laughter, families, communities, artists and local business together for another summer of fun! ‘The success of GoGoGorillas! was unbelievable. The way the public took them to their hearts - the partnerships, sponsors and artists who made the trail come to life will be remembered for a long time to come and the legacy lives on.

This time, Break and Wild in Art have chosen the Dragon, a mythical creature whose legend is much embedded in the history of Norwich. We will be looking for artists to submit designs and businesses to sponsor the Dragons working towards a stunning trail around the City of Norwich in June 2015.

As well as the main Dragon sculptures, there will also be community and school projects to engage with the widest possible audience. We are at the beginning of another awesome

journey which we hope will bring amazing art to Norwich, visitors to our beautiful City and lots of joy and laughter’.

Michael Rooney, Fundraising Manager at Break, says “Break is really looking forward to delivering another fantastic event for Norwich in 2015. We are very pleased to be working with our excellent partners Wild in Art and are excited about the possibilities that the Dragon sculpture brings. We want to build on the success of GoGoGorillas! whilst at the same time delivering some different aspects to increase its appeal to wider communities. Our aim is to have an inspiring event and raise money for Break’s work with vulnerable children young people and families. We will shortly be making an announcement about how

North Walsham Social Centre for the Blind

We are currently looking for new members to join our club. With some members moving home and bereavement our numbers have dwindled slightly. The club meets the first Thursday of every month at 2pm at North Walsham Community Centre - if you are partially blind, blind or have any other sight problems, come and pay us a visit. We have a yearly programme so there is something different going on each month, also a monthly raffle and a second hand stall the proceeds of which are added to our fund raising.

When the Club met on Thursday 3 April we were entertained by local duo, The Squeegees, who sang a medley of songs from the 60s and even got members joining in on a couple of fun songs! We had a good laugh and all really enjoyed the fun.

The March meeting was our AGM. The meeting went well and the committee were all voted back in for another year. Peter Adamson, one of the organisers of Talking Newspapers, also visited. We have started our fund raising events with a bang this year - a bingo session was organised on the evening of Friday 15 March by Cynthia Clare and Lila Bispham at The Queen Elizabeth Hall in Worstead. The total raised was £302. We would like to say a big thank you to the organisers for collecting all the prizes and staging the event. Our raffles and second hand clothing stall have also had a boost since we started the new calendar year - on our return in February the joint amount for both the second hand clothing stall and raffles totalled £135.

We are not at the Community Centre in May because we are out for our annual Spring Lunch at the Scarborough Hill Restaurant.

We will be back at the Community Centre on Thursday 5 June. If you are interested in joining the club please telephone either 01692 500400 or 01692 402562.

CCTV

At a special meeting held at the Atrium on Wednesday 9 April, the Town Council resolved to sign the agreement proposed by North Norfolk District Council in respect of the transfer of CCTV equipment. The Council now awaits the completion of this process, and looks forward to being able to offer a continuation of CCTV coverage of the town in support of the police and ongoing efforts to ensure community safety.

Following the launch of the new AED (defibrillator) at Aroma on St Nicholas Square earlier this month, and a further installation expected at Coral Bookmaker’s soon, the next step is for the Town Council to publish a map showing the location of all such devices in North Walsham. Although we are already aware of the locations of several of these, Town Council staff would be grateful for confirmation so that records can be checked and the map published can be as up-to-date as possible. Please call on 01692 404114 or email clerk@northwalsham-town.co.uk with details.

Staying with defibrillators, offers of training in the use of these devices have been made to the Town Council. Anyone who might be interested is asked to contact staff, who will coordinate a list and discuss further with the trainers.

Council gallery hosts new exhibition

North Norfolk District Council’s (NNDC) public art gallery is presenting an illuminating and entertaining collection of watercolour originals by Cromer artist June Skinner.

Now a resident in Cromer, June’s former home was in Cornwall, where she attended two art colleges and gaining a Higher National Certificate in Illustration and Design. As a mature student June did not pursue further academic training because of costs and the inaccessibility of education centres specialising in art. However, her time is now spent passionately producing vibrant and fun-loving works. June has developed her own style using watercolour, acrylic and oil, although she believes watercolour is the best medium for flower paintings.

The colourful “Jolly Ladies” are predominately executed in watercolour or acrylics and reinforce the principle that exuberant art helps improve the overall sense of well-being for the observer “I hope sometimes they make the viewer smile. Colour and smiles are good for all of us.” June Skinner The exhibition offers original framed watercolours at affordable prices from £30 to £70. NNDC seeks to offer opportunities to local artists to display their work in the well-lit first-floor ‘gallery’ area in its Holt Road offices in Cromer, and in turn provides staff and visitors to the building the opportunity to see a variety of different artists’ work. Currently six exhibitions are held annually; open for view to the public during normal office hours, Mon, Tue, Thur 8.30am-5pm; Wed 10am-5pm; Fri 8.30am-4.30pm.

Norfolk music festival donates to local charities

One of Norfolk’s premier local music festivals last year donated almost £4,500 to charities and community causes.

Reepham Music Festival, which runs on the second weekend of August each year was, in 2013, able to direct proceeds from the two-day event to a range of good causes, including Norwich Mind, Surviving Together, Musical Keys and the Matthew Project.

Festival chairman Steve Jenkins said ‘The Festival committee has always has always been firmly committed to the idea of the wider community benefiting from what is essentially a fun and affordable weekend for music fans." Reepham Festival started seven years ago as

a community event and has swiftly grown to find its place on the regional and national festival calendar, with bands and musicians from across the UK, Europe and even Australia applying to perform. Headliners have included such legends as From The Jam, Wishbone Ash, The Boomtown Rats and Dr Feelgood. 2014 sees the legendary Big Country headlining and one of the UK’s top tribute acts, Mainly Madness, have just been confirmed to appear.

"It’s a non-profit-making event," explains Steve. "And it costs a considerable amount of money to set up each year, but the ethos of directing net proceeds to charity underlines the principle of a community event giving back to the community."

Whilst some benefiting charities cover the whole county, other causes helped have been more specifically local, such as Reepham Patient Care and a donation towards a wheelchair for a Norfolk three year-old suffering from spastic diplegia cerebral palsy.

Full details of this year’s Reepham Music Festival, which is on 9 and 10 August, can be found at www.reephamfestival.co.uk.

Day, weekend and camping tickets are available from 01603 508050, www.ueaticketbookings.co.uk, Soundclash in St Benedict’s, Very Nice Things in Reepham and from Whitwell and Reepham Station.

By George! It's time to celebrate Scouting's patron saint North Walsham hosts 500-strong St Georges Day Parade - Sunday 27 April

North East Norfolk District Scouts St George’s Day celebration will be hosted this year by 1st North Walsham Scout Group - Civic dignitaries, parents, friends and supporters will see 500 Scout members aged from six years onwards - Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, Explorers, adult leaders and supporters – all assemble at the Memorial Park in the town at 2pm. The Parade this year will be led by the 901 Troop Marine Cadets, Band and Drum Corps from Winterton, and under the careful watch of Scouts Parade Marshall - Roger Smith (Acting Group Scout Leader from North Walsham), the Parade will proceed along Yarmouth Road to the Market Place where the Flag Bearers will form a Guard of Honour either side of the entrance door of the Parish Church of St Nicholas, where the St George’s Day Church Service will begin at 3pm and will include the renewal of Scout Promises by all members.

St George's Day is officially celebrated on 23 April. Saint George is the Patron Saint of England and also the Patron Saint of all Scouts around the world.

This year the St George Flag, the familiar red horizontal cross on a white background, will be returned to the District by 1st Aylsham Division and during the Church Service District Commissioner, Rena Savage, will

present the Flag to 1st Stalham Group for their safekeeping during the forthcoming year, in recognition of their growth as a Group and outstanding service in their local community.

The theme of this year’s Church Service, chosen by members of North Walsham Group, is to be ‘Courage’ – youngsters from all Scouting Sections will be participating in the service, including presenting their very own ‘live’ St George! District Chaplain, Reverend Phillip Blamire has said that this year is a particularly poignant event for North Walsham Scouts following the sad loss of their Group Scout Leader, Buzz Burrell, to cancer recently. Reverend Blamire said that the young people and their leaders had done a wonderful job and were utterly determined to make this a meaningful and memorable occasion for everyone – using drama, prayers and reflections to recognise that moral courage, courageous achievements and positive outcomes matter.

It is traditional for the collection during the Service to be donated to charities chosen by the host Group, and this year, 1st North Walsham Scout Group have requested that proceeds should be split between “Elmwood Woodcraft Centre”, a locally run service providing a range of accommodation, support services and day opportunities for people with learning

disabilities and those with physical disabilities, living in and around North Walsham, and Macmillan Cancer Support - the largest cancer care and support charity in the UK working to improve the lives of everyone living with cancer.

Acting Group Scout Leader, Roger Smith, also wished to acknowledge the support and practical help provided by many local organisations, including North Walsham Town Council, the Chamber of Commerce who have alerted local retailers and food establishments to stay open for facilities and refreshments to be available for visiting families and friends, the Round Table members who will be helping with marshalling and controlling traffic on the day, and Inspector Kersty Brooks the local Police Command and her team for their guidance and support.

The Service will finish at approximately 3.45pm and the Parade will then form-up in the Market Place and proceed to the march past in column of route where the salute will be taken by North East Norfolk District Commissioner, Mrs Rena Savage, who will be joined on the dais by North East Norfolk Vice-President, Mrs Betty Jackson, and North Walsham Town Mayor, Mrs Jackie Belson. The saluting dais will be located to the right hand side of the Lidl’s car park entrance on Yarmouth Road – a good location for you to see the Parade if you wish.

WW1 - 100 Walk3

On 26 April the Veterans In Action team will be embarking on the WW1 - 100 walk covering 4000 miles over 100 days.

The aim of WW1-100 is twofold. Primarily it is to raise awareness of the Centenary of the start of the Great War and the sacrifices made by the three million British and Commonwealth service personnel who were killed or wounded in the service of their countries. Secondly it is to learn from the past and raise funds for those veterans who are currently suffering from the effects of war or who have found the transition to civilian life difficult.

VIA take a non-therapy approach and instead uses the outdoors and challenging events to help rebuild confidence, self-esteem and self-belief in the themselves.

In the past three years VIA have walked a distance of 6400 miles over the UK in a series of walks called the Union Flag Walks which, when completed, will take the form of the Union Flag over mainland Britain.

Diabetes UK North Norfolk Voluntary Group Sponsored Walk

Walkers wanted to walk in late spring’s beauty for a great cause on Sunday 8 June from 10am to 2pm in the delightful grounds of Felbrigg Hall.

The North Norfolk Group of Diabetes UK have once again chosen the historic National Trust grounds of Felbrigg to hold their annual, fund-raising, sponsored walk. Suitable for all ages and set out as a figure of eight (to give a 3.3km or 2.7km walk) this gentle walk runs through woods and meadows filled with spring bird song and alive with other wildlife.

So if you feel you would like to help raise vitally needed funds to help this Diabetes charity continue to fund new research, raise awareness and improve treatments for those with diabetes, please come along.

All are welcome including families, and dogs (on leads) and there is wheelchair access on the Victory woodland walk loop. Parking is free and toilets and catering are available close by the start and finish point, which will be situated between the Hall and the nearby lovely walled gardens.

WW1-100 will be a long-distance relay walk around the coastline of mainland Britain which will start from the Tyne Cot War Cemetery at Ypres (Iepres), Belgium. The VIA Walking Team will pass through over 700 villages, towns and cities en-route and will be seen by millions of people throughout the 4,000 mile walk.

The aim is to raise £3Million which equates to £1 for each British and Commonwealth service person from WW1 who were killed or wounded. The funds raised will enable VIA to continue to deliver and develop their unique ALIVE Program.

Locally, the team will travel along the A149 from Stalham towards North Walsham on Friday 9 May, reaching Cromer and Sheringham the following day, Saturday 10 May.

Making a Splash with Special Olympics Norfolk

Norfolk’s Special Olympics group is making waves with the launch of a new swimming section adding to the growing range of sports it offers.

Open to children and adults with intellectual disabilities as well as offering volunteering opportunities, the new group will be meeting every Sunday at Wymondham Leisure Centre from 5pm to 6pm.

“The new group will give keen swimmers the chance to compete regionally, nationally and internationally and provide them with a lot of fun as well as exercise,” explained Special Olympics Norfolk volunteer co-ordinator Kay Bailey.

Special Olympics was founded in 1968 by Eunice Kennedy Shriver, the sister of President John F Kennedy, who believed that the Olympic ideals of sport could give confidence and new hope to people with learning disabilities as well as to those who cared for them. Special Olympics now reaches over 4.2 million athletes in 170 countries worldwide.

STAR PAVING SERVICES

North Walsham Table Tennis NWSCA into Second Cup Final

The first semi-final of the Handicap Doubles Cup saw Shark’s Matt Hudson (F), Chris Marshall (H) and Steve Hudson (F) host NWSCA’s Tom Baldock-Yaxley (A), Andy Beane (D) and John Vaughan (G) at Trunch Village Hall. The match was a repeat of a first round tie from the Handicap Singles which had seen Sharks recover from 0-3 to win a dramatic tie 5-4. This time the opening two battles gave Sharks a four point start but a win in three and then in straight moved NWSCA 2-0 ahead. Matt Hudson and Marshall (+10) then took Sharks first point with a 21-16 in the third win against Baldock-Yaxley and Beane. Two straight set wins for NWSCA followed as they recovered starts of six and then eight points to move one win from the final. Matt Hudson and Marshall (+4) kept Sharks in contention with a comfortable win in straight against Beane and Vaughan but Baldock-Yaxley and Beane closed out NWSCA’s 5-2 win in a battle of great rallies against Marshall and Steve Hudson

(+10). They came through 21-17, 20-21, 21-19 and NWSCA will play either Backhanders or NWSCB in the final.

confirmed their status as League champions – the new winners defeated reigning champions NWSCA 7-3, however that did not stop John Vaughan from recording his first win against Haken Bennell since 1981!

In the Handicap Singles Cup, defending champions NWSCD (Mary Sawyer, Joe Kirkup and Philip Stone) faced an away tie to B arracudas at the quarter-final stage. The match went all the way to the wire where Barracuda Mike Toye (+2) faced Sawyer. As deciding matches go, this one was decidedly bitty and rally free as Toye’s stinging returns and stunning winners were matched by unforced errors. A decision in the second by Sawyer to step back and hit, effectively playing the Barracuda at his own game helped her come through 18-21, 21-13, 21-15 to seal NWSCD’s 5-4 win. However a disappointing performance saw the team bow out in the semi-final losing 5-1 away to Aylsham A which was also the score NWSCB lost out to Specials by in their quarter-final tie.

In the second division NWSCE (Andrew Weston, Joel Lodge and Tom Wardle) and NWSCC (Chris Johnson and James Morter joined by Stuart Hook playing up) finished their season with a derby against each other with NWSCC winning 9-1. Morter beat Wardle in five while Lodge took NWSCE’s point with a close 10-12, 11-7, 11-6, 15-17, 11-8 win against Hook. Either Hunworth Poachers or Aylsham B will win the division which has gone right down to the wire and will not be decided until the final match which is between those two teams – Poachers need a win, while Aylsham can settle for a draw.

In the first division of the Star Paving Services League itself Gresham’s School A have
