Issue 446 10th May 2014
100 Year Celebration
Covering North Walsham, Aylsham and surrounding villages in association with the Cromer Times and Sheringham Independent
Saint Nicholas Church and the local community will be celebrating the last 100 years at a special four day festival in the church from 6 to 9 June. Almost 40 local organisations and businesses have been busy preparing displays to illustrate some aspect of the last 100 years which is of special importance to them.
The church hopes that the event will both celebrate the accomplishments of the past 100 years and express the diversity of the local community. By drawing people into the church over the festival weekend it is hoped to raise awareness of the central place the church holds in North Walsham and how working together we can raise the profile of our town.
There will be a grand opening on Friday 6 June at 7pm when Major General Sir William Cubitt will declare the 100 Year Celebration open. NEW COMPETITION INSIDE THIS ISSUE! Continued on page 4...

100 Year Celebration
Continued from front cover... Sir William a local landowner has been at the organisational forefront of many grand state occasions at the latter end of the 100 years by being in command of the army's presence in London from 2007 to 2011 when he provided troops for events such as The Lord Mayor's Show and the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton. He is also the President of the Norfolk branch of the Royal British Legion.
During the evening visitors can preview the displays whilst the church is filled with the music from our talented organist Mr David Ballard. There will be wine and a buffet included in the ticket price of £5.
The Celebration will continue from 9.30am to 4.30pm on Saturday, 11.30am to 2.30pm on Sunday and 9.30am to 4.30pm on Monday. Entry is free but programmes can be purchased for £1 with the opportunity to vote for the three best displays. Light refreshments and a tombola will be available. All proceeds will go towards the necessary repairs being carried out on the church tower.
On Saturday evening 7 June, there will be a Cantamus Concert when again the church will be filled with inspirational music. Tickets for this and refreshment will cost £6 and can be purchased at the door.
On Sunday 8 June there will be two special services held in the midst of the displays, Parish Communion at 10am when the preacher will be Canon Michael Long and a Civic Service at 3pm when all the church communities of the town welcome the Mayor and Councillors and join in singing some favourite hymns.
Saint Nicholas is hoping that as many people as possible attend the celebrations and support not only the church but all the local organisations and businesses who have resourced and prepared displays.

NATIONAL BLOOD SERVICE BLOOD DONOR SESSIONS Thursday 29 May
COMMUNITY CENTRE, NEW ROAD, NORTH WALSHAM
1pm – 3.15pm and 4.45pm – 7pm
Spring into action to save lives
NHS Blood and Transplant is asking readers not to forget hospital patients when they’re making plans to enjoy the better weather. With more sunshine and longer days, everyone will be getting out and about more in their free time.
Derek Carr, Lead Donor Relations Manager for Anglia for NHS Blood and Transplant, said: “We’re asking people to spring into action this Spring. This time of year is an important time to give, as stocks are often more vulnerable around public holidays, when people are busy getting out and about or going away for breaks. Giving blood now and in the next few weeks will also help boost blood stocks before people turn their attention towards England in the Football World Cup. Please don’t forget about those hospital patients who rely on blood donors to save their lives or keep them well.
“We need more than 7,000 people to attend a blood donation session every day to collect the amount of blood hospitals across England and North Wales need to treat patients. So go on, make an appointment to donate. All you need to do is visit www.blood.co.uk, find a local session and make an appointment.”
NHS Blood and Transplant needs people from all blood groups to donate, but O negative and B negative donors are particularly needed. O negative or “universal” donors can help patients with a different blood group, vital in an emergency when there may not be time for an immediate blood grouping test. B negative blood is also in demand as certain ethnic groups are more prone to certain diseases that require blood, like sickle cell anaemia and thalassemia and a higher proportion of these ethnic groups are Group B. B negative blood can be given to B negative or B positive patients.
Conditions including cancer, thalassaemia and sickle cell anaemia, accidents and problems in childbirth can all lead to patients needing vital blood transfusions. Patients may need a one-off transfusion or weeks, months or even years of treatment.
In general, as long as you are fit and healthy, weigh over 7 stone 12 lbs (50kg) and are aged between 17 and 66 (up to 70 if you have given blood before) you should be able to give blood. If you are over 70, you need to have given blood in the last two years to continue donating.
For more information or to book an appointment visit www.blood.co.uk or contact 0300 123 23 23.

FOR A PERSONALISED QUOTATION. North Walsham Times 446 May 10th 2014
I have very much enjoyed being part of the wonderful Crab and Lobster Festival over the weekend and serving up my beautiful seafood paella. I do think that this part of the world has so much to be proud of and it’s great whenever we can shout about the fabulous local produce that we deliver day in and day out.
Paella is of course an amazingly tasty dish to make and enjoy and it’s always good fun to serve, especially in the summer. (We had a six-foot paella dish for the festival which serves up to 250 people, so you’ll be relieved to hear that I’ve cut down the ingredients that you will need somewhat!)
We had an exceptionally busy Easter here at The Grove and we are now gearing up for the surge into the summer, with the Whitsun half-term and then Father’s Day fast approaching. Of course, my à la carte menu runs every night too so do please pop in to see us for dinner – 01263512412 to book your table.
Best wishes, Charlie

Taste and See at Liaison
We have just celebrated Easter and the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Why is it still important today? Should it really affect us in the 21st century?
When Jesus died over 2000 years ago he was dying for YOU, to bring you back into a right relationship with God where we all belong.
If you want to know more and to find out the difference that Jesus will make to your life, Taste and See still meet on the first Friday of each month at Liaison at 2.30pm. The next dates are 6 June, no meeting in July, 1 August, 5 September, 3 October, 7 November and 5 December. Here you can relax in good company over tea, coffee and cake and chat and perhaps find answers to those questions that as yet are still a mystery to you. A lovely welcome awaits you.
and gently fry until all the ingredients are nicely golden in colour.
▪ Gently add stock until all absorbed.
▪ Add your peppers and keep stirring, adding the saffron and smoked paprika; add the smoked prawns and finally flake the crab and the lobster into the mix.
▪ Make sure everything is cooked through thoroughly, and serve with wild garlic leaves (there are loads around right now!)

Following a visit from a mystery shopper earlier this year they were assessed on the quality of fish and chips, staff presentation, front-of-house, hygiene and customer service. An award of 100% for their food helped them achieve a place in the coveted top 50 fish and chip shops of the United Kingdom and the mystery diner commented “This is the nicest fish I have tasted in a fish and chip shop.”
Left to right: Tim Ashdown, Kirstie Anderson, David Audley, Paula Audley, Sam Homfray Owners, Paula, Sam and David, would like to thank their staff for their work in helping reach this standard and the many loyal customers and friends who have supported them over many years trading in North Norfolk.
Concert by The Choir Worstead
Highlights from Handel’s popular Messiah will form the latest concert by The Choir Worstead.
The choir has been rehearsing the music since the new year in readiness for the performance on Saturday 17 May at St Mary’s Church, Worstead.
Following this, it will be switching to more up to date tunes in time for Worstead Festival, where it will be performing on the Sunday of the weekend 26 & 27 July.

Messiah has been a firm favourite for choirs and audiences over the years since its first performance in Dublin in 1742 when, to create more space for as large an audience as possible, gentlemen were asked not to take their swords and ladies not to wear hoops in their dresses.
Organist for the concert will be Henry Macey, who has played for the choir for several performances as well as being the organist and choirmaster at Aylsham Church.
The choir, firmly based in the community, is unauditioned and includes all ages. It has recently benefited from the arrival of new members and continues to flourish, though is always happy to welcome more, particularly tenors.
It rehearses on Thursdays at Worstead Village Hall, 7.30-9.30pm. Call Helen Kelly on 01692 538941 if you would like to find out more or see www.thechoir.org.uk. You can also see its Facebook page or follow on Twitter @choirworstead.
Tickets for the concert are £7.50 including a glass of wine or a cuppa, on the door. It starts at 7.30pm.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
The message on our answer phone asks people to phone the special number shown below if they wish for help to neuter their cat but to leave a message if they are calling for any other reason. Unfortunately, if they do call the neutering line for any other reason (and this does happen quite often) our volunteer who “mans” the phone will not be able to help them and they will need to ring the “cat” phone again and leave a message. Stephanie will respond to their enquiry as soon as she can, although we do ask people to ring again if she has not done so within 24 hours, as sometimes the message is indistinct, or the person forgets to leave their number. Working, looking after her own animals, plus the cats in the pens at her home, does mean she is not available to respond straight away, so please do give her time to get back to you before calling again.
Cats come into care for lots of reasons but it is always sad when someone has to re-home their cats because of a relationship breakdown resulting in them not being able to afford to keep them. Having to part

shortlisted for prestigious award
North Norfolk District Council’s (NNDC) legal team, eastlaw, has made it to the finals of the National MJ Achievement Awards.
Many hundreds of councils have entered the MJ Achievement Awards 2014 and six exceptional legal teams have been whittled down as the finalists in the ‘Legal Services’ category.
The award recognises and rewards a council legal department which demonstrates exceptional value for money for the council through their contribution and innovation.
with well loved members of the household for any reason is difficult but in these circumstances doubly so. Some recent additions to our pens came in for this reason, beautiful cats, with lovely temperaments and obviously well loved. Patch, one of the new arrivals mentioned One has already been offered a new home and so hopefully the others will too.
If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit

for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.
If however you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher).

The concept of eastlaw was developed by NNDC’s legal team itself, to deliver services both in-house and on behalf of external clients. Aiming to combine the best aspects of public sector practice with the efficiency and dynamism of the private sector, eastlaw has been particularly successful in acting as the legal arm of NNDC’s drive to bring empty homes back into use, in setting up the coastshare group to help charities and other not-for-profit organisations, and in greatly exceeding the income target for its first year of operation.

Intestacy Rules
written by Adele Moore – Trainee Solicitor with Hayes + Storr Why should I make a Will? I do not have anything to leave.
This is a question most people will ask at some point in their lifetime. Often people are worth more dead than alive, in terms of life policies and pension funds falling in.
If you die without a Will the intestacy rules take effect. These are rules which are set down by law detailing who is to benefit from your estate.
If somebody dies intestate whilst married with children, they may think their entire estate will pass to their surviving spouse. However, only the first £250,000 passes to your spouse absolutely. The remainder of the estate will be divided into two parts. The first part will be a life interest for your surviving spouse and the other half will be split equally between your children when they attain the age of eighteen.
Generally, a married couple with children will wish on the first death for their entire estate to pass to their spouse and only on the second death is it to pass to the children.
If you die intestate with children and are not married or in a civil partnership, the entire estate will pass to the children in equal shares. This will include estranged children. Therefore, even if you have a child who you do not see,
they will still be entitled to an equal share in your estate.
The intestacy rules do not favour cohabiting couples. If you are not married or in a civil partnership and die intestate your partner will not be entitled to any of your estate. If you have children, again your children will benefit and you may hope they would provide for your partner but this is not always the case. If you want your partner to benefit you have to make a Will. If you do not have children your estate will pass to other family members.*
If you have made a Will you get to choose who will be responsible for the administration of the estate, your Executors. If you die intestate, your estate’s administrators are selected from the beneficiaries, who might not be individuals who would get on or are competent to do the job. If any child is under eighteen or the surviving spouse is entitled to a life interest in part of the estate, then there have to be two administrators. Sometimes circumstances are such that two, eligible potential administrators are not available.
Below is an example of a simple intestate estate: Mr & Mrs X have assets worth £1,000,000, £500,000 in Mr X’s name and £500,000 in Mrs X’s and no Will. Mr X has two children from a
previous marriage who he no longer sees. There are three children of the current marriage. Mr X dies. Mrs X would inherit £250,000 plus a life interest in £125,000. The remaining £125,000 would be split between the five children, each receiving £25,000. Mr X had not had contact with his two children for 20 years and therefore the estate had to bear the cost of locating them. This would reduce the shares the children receive and the life interest.
One of the major issues when someone dies intestate is the cost of locating beneficiaries. In the above examples, it may be easy to locate all the children. But in situations where someone dies intestate with no children and their spouse has predeceased them, the cost of tracking beneficiaries can take up a large proportion of the estate. Please see our next article ‘Intestacy rules – no immediate family’. *Please see ‘Intestacy rules – no immediate family’.

Happisburgh Lifeboat Station Volunteer Making History
Happisburgh R.N.L.I. Lifeboat Station is celebrating 100 years of continuous service this year and now one of our volunteers has made history by becoming the first female to hold the position of Helmsman of the station’s ‘D’ Class lifeboat.
Charlotte Siely, who was passed out by the Divisional Inspector on the 31 March follows in her father’s footsteps as Cubitt is also a Helmsman. It is a family affair with not only her father but also her brother, Cubitt (Junior), on the crew.
everyone worked together to save a life”.
As Charlotte became more experienced she was placed on the helm training pathway and in 2013 went back to the RNLI college to do her Helm Course, then returned to the station at Happisburgh to finish her training. This included working with the other station’s helmsmen and completing assessments before going to sea with the Divisional Inspector.
Charlotte joined the crew in May 2010 just after her 17th birthday; “once she had been out on the boat she was hooked and now can’t see herself not doing this vital role”. In February 2011 she went to Poole to the RNLI college to do her crew course.
She remembers one of her first rescues, when called to a diver with the bends. The crew picked him up quickly and started treatment, then he was transferred to an RAF helicopter. Charlotte said “I was so impressed by the way

In June 2011 Charlotte and Jake Munday completed a skydive to raise money for the RNLI to help pay back the cost of their training; both are now “D” Class helmsmen.
The opportunities for volunteer crew and shore crew are available for males or females over the age of 17 years; you would need to be fit and not colour blind. If interested please visit the station on Tuesday evening or Sunday morning to find out more.

'Stand By Yer Beds'
'Stand By Yer Beds' is a light-hearted look at what it was really like to be a National Serviceman in the ’40s and ’50s, written by first time author and bandsman Dennis Cozens.
The book is chock-full (geddit?) of photos from the time and humourous cartoons drawn by the author, which brings to life the reality of National Service, the good, the bad, the mad and the sad in a very light-hearted fashion.
A nice read, available exclusively from Showcase Gallery, 40a Market Place, North Walsham 01692-500928 at just £10.

THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER FORECASTING THE WEATHER SEAWEED OR SCIENCE?
The weather is an enduring topic of interest to gardeners. For example, the weather in May can be particularly treacherous with frosts late in the month that are especially likely when night skies are clear - which is usually the case for most of the month - and when April has been drier than usual. Equally May can be hot and low in rainfall so gardeners need to know what to expect so they can plan when to plant tender plants and vegetables, when to water, when to apply weedkiller and how to plan their many other tasks. To help gardeners there are the professional weather reports on the radio and television of course but also many old wives tales and much folk lore which has been used over the centuries.
Meteorologists have the advantage of lots of complicated equipment, such as satellites and supercomputers to forecast the weather, however people have always used all the things around them as a guide. As well as looking at the skies, they also used the behaviour of animals, birds and plants as clues to future
weather patterns. Nowadays, people still disagree as to whether this weather lore is simply superstition or if it can in fact help in predicting the weather. However the ability of some plants and animals to respond to the many environmental indicators that can foreshadow an imminent change in weather conditions should not be dismissed out of hand.
For example it is thought that there are a number of flowers that you should look for if you want to know if it is going to rain. One of these is the Scarlet Pimpernel, which has been called the ‘poor man’s weather glass’, because the flowers open in sunny weather, but close tightly when rain is expected. Interestingly this common annual also acts as a sundial, opening its red petals at about 8am and shutting them at two in the afternoon. The petals of the Morning Glory also close when rain is expected. In coastal areas, seaweed is often used as a natural weather forecaster. Kelp shrivels and feels dry in fine weather, but swells and becomes damp if rain is in the air.
If we add in all the other observations, folk lore and superstitions which include such various clues as cows lying down, the timing of oaks
and ash trees coming into flower, red sky at night and swallows flying high there seems to be no need for professional meteorologists. However at the next meeting of the Sheringham Horticultural Society members will hear from Jim Bacon, the well known weatherman about ‘Weather in the Garden’. Jim has been a meteorologist since 1968. In 1986 after working for the London Weather Centre he moved back to East Anglia to become a member of the Anglia Television weather team. This lasted until 1997 when Jim rejoined the Met. Office for a period before setting up Weatherquest, based at UEA, when the local Norwich Weather Centre was closed down.
The meeting will be held on 15 May in the Lighthouse Community Church, Sheringham commencing at 7.30 pm. Free to members with a charge of £3 for visitors. There will be a collection and all the proceeds will be donated to the East Anglia’s Children’s Hospice.

North Walsham Times 446 May 10th 2014
10,000 Reasons to Support North Walsham Live Aid North Walsham ROCKED on Saturday 19 April when a capacity sell out crowd filled the Community Centre for the 2014 North Walsham Live Aid Rock Show.
The unique Formula 1 shaped wine bottle signed by Sir Stirling Moss raised £240 and a signed photo plus his Goodwood members’ badge raised £170.
As Rod Stewart couldn’t be there a looky-likey stand in was on the door to welcome everyone to the gig!
At 7.15pn The Grease Monkeys kicked off the evening with a mixture of great Blues classics and a rocking finish to their set of Staus Quo favourites.
As tradition now dictates, rocking the joint as usual, local stars Raw Edge took the stage, the only band to have played the gig virtually every year with their signature set of Rock classics.
Opening the second half were the fabulous Norwich based Pure Passion, their first time at Live Aid and judging by the tremendous response from the crowd, it will not be their last.
On the acoustic stage during the band changeovers we featured local duo Cruel Folk playing original tracks from their current and new albums.
The now established and compulsive Memorabilia Auction followed, with over 40 lots of items signed by rock stars and other Next on stage with great tracks from their British icons, such as Sir Stirling Moss, raising album were The Burning Crows, back in the over £6000 in total with the highest priced item area after extensive countrywide gigs. being the Gibson guitar signed by Rod Stewart on the TV programme Surprise, Surprise, which raised £2100, the Woodgate Nursery in Aylsham hosts its popular signed CD from the Garden Show Weekend over the weekend of same show raising an Saturday 17th & Sunday 18th May, 10am – 5pm, additional £630 and in aid of The East Anglian Air Ambulance. a framed drum head Want to achieve a lush lawn, beautiful blooms or even weave your own signed by all Willow fence? A fun day for all the family, budding young gardeners can get up close and personal with birds of prey from The Seal and Bird Rescue Trust, take part in the Nursery Treasure Trail and go home with seed kits ready to start growing their own.
Norfolk craft companies will be selling handmade gifts. While the garden centre’s tearoom, Purdy’s, will be serving a delicious range of homemade cakes, light lunches, ice cream, teas and coffees throughout the weekend.
Last year’s event was a resounding success, with more than 3,000 people visiting, raising £648 for the charity. Entry is free, but donations to The East Anglian Air Ambulance are welcome.

On stage at midnight were the outrageous Pout at the Devil – long hair and lycra taking the crowd on a journey of hard, fast and exciting rock to end the evening.
Thanks must go to all the bands playing for free, plus Chris, Kerry, Daisy, Tim, Anne, David, Pam, Harry, Alistair and Billy plus Titch of Rhythmic Sound & Light for a brilliant job, also for free, and of course Charles Horner-Glister, our brilliant auctioneer. Thank you also to the very hard working bar staff at the Community Centre.
With the hard work of all the above and the support of shops and businesses in the town, plus the celebrities that help out every year, we raised an amazing £10,000 for the Sporting Light Childrens’ Charity, Norwich.
Finally thank you to all those who supported us on the night – here’s to next year – Saturday 18 April 2015, put it in your diaries now!

White Horse Cheque for Nelson’s Journey is over £6,000
Members of the White Horse Charity Committee presented their last cheque to Nelson’s Journey on Thursday 24th April bringing to a close five years of fund-raising for various charities.
Carol Plunkett, Funding and Marketing Officer from Nelson’s Journey said “I am thrilled this is a really amazing amount of money and we are extremely grateful to the White Horse and all those who have worked so hard to raise it” she continued, “without the help of groups like this we would find it very hard to carry on with our work and it is so important that we are their for children who go through perhaps the most traumatic thing the will ever have to endure” Nelson's Journey is a charity dedicated to supporting bereaved children and young people throughout Norfolk. Based in Norwich, we were founded in 1997, since which time we have helped over 1500 children between the age of 0 to 17, who have experienced the death of a significant person in their life.
The name Nelson's Journey was chosen to inspire the two main aspects of the charity -
much money for such a superb charity is a great way to finish”
Lleft to right: Brian Walsgrove Di Rolph Carol Plunkett (Nelsons Journey) James Bird Nick Claridge, Margaret Claridge, Marie Kimp
we are local, hence the use of Norfolk's own Admiral Nelson, and 'Journey' was chosen as bereavement is a journey which begins the minute your loved one dies and lasts a lifetime. The work that the group began 15 years ago continues and Nelson's Journey has gone on to grow year-on-year.
The charity relies entirely dependent on donations from individuals, groups, Trusts and organisations, as well as money raised by our own fundraising events.

This year’s figure of £6,304.79 was the largest amount raised in the five years that the group have been going, but now after an AGM held at the White Horse have decided to call it a day. Out going chairman Nick Clariage said, “We have all enjoyed the last few years but feel it is time for a break and raising this
White Horse owner, Darren Walsgrove, said “Over the past five years the White Horse has raised an amazing amount of money for charities and I am delighted to say that the work is to continue into 2014 but with the emphasis very much on ‘local’. He continued, “it is testament to the real community spirit of our village and the hard work of a small band of volunteer event organisers and the generosity of the many that have allowed us to raise such a fantastic amount for good causes and now is the right time to re-think our aims and to direct our efforts more towards the village of Overstrand, there are a number of projects and events that are just as deserving of our support and I would like to look at ways to help them and make sure that they can continue into the future for the benefit of the whole village”.
At an open meeting held at the White Horse on Tuesday 11th March over 30 residents many representing other village groups and clubs came together to discuss the formation of a new village fundraising group.
A very lively and positive discussion led to the formation of ‘Overstrand Together’. The aim to raise money to support village groups and events including the Millennium Playground by creating events that will bring village residents together in a true community spirit.
A second open meeting held at the White Horse on 10 April agreed the way forward and as part of its fund-raising efforts are planning the Overstrand Summer Fair on Saturday 2nd August to be held at the Overstrand Sports Ground. Also in the diary for the coming months is the White Horse Car Wash in Saturday 12th July and a Village Yard Sale on Sunday 13th July. Details of these and other events can be obtained from the White Horse.

The Sheringham Players Go ‘On the Razzle’ to Celebrate Their 50th Anniversary
To celebrate their Golden Anniversary (1964-2014) The Sheringham Players will stage Tom Stoppard’s masterpiece “On the Razzle”.
Director June Cooper – together with Julian High will direct this fabulously funny and clever play.
In 1964, June Cooper joined other enthusiastic actors to form The Sheringham Players. Since then the group has grown and strengthened. Their constant aim has always been to entertain local audiences, without whose loyal support The Sheringham Players would not have survived… so to them a big thank you!
Tom Stoppard’s farce consists of two hours of slapstick, shenanigans, mistaken identities, misdirected orders, malapropisms, double entendres and romantic complications. Set in Vienna in the 1880s and packed full of laughter, this is an unmissable production. The Sheringham Players warmly invite you to celebrate their 50 years of theatre from Wednesday 11 June to Saturday14 June at 7.30pm at Sheringham Little Theatre.
Tickets £10 (including souvenir programme) available at The Box Office, Sheringham Little Theatre Tel 01263 822347 – or see their website for more details www.sheringhamlittletheatre.com In association with www.northwalshamdeals.co.uk

NORTH WALSHAM PROBUS CLUB Last month’s meeting was the Club’s AGM when John Hazel was elected President for the coming year. The outgoing President, Ian Wood, in his valedictory speech commented upon the increase in membership. This, he attributed at least in part, to the quality of speakers over the past year. John, in his introductory presentation as President, gave a spontaneous talk about his national service, which reflected the quality of discussion that Ian had just described.
John’s spell of national service was during the mid 50s, and was preceded by a period of uncertainty, especially when the brown envelope failed to arrive with his cards on his 18th birthday. Has her Majesty forgotten me?
Such doubts were soon dispelled when he was summoned for initial training with the RASC at Aldershot. One of the features of national service was the comradeship which built up between fellow recruits. This was shown when John described his acute disappointment at his group being posted to the Far East, while he was left behind. Initially he hoped that this might result in a cushy posting to Uxbridge with a Territorial tank unit. Again his hopes were dashed.
Many will remember the 50s as a period when the Cold War cast a shadow over the globe and particularly Europe. John was to find that a role existed for him in SHAPE, which gave him a heightened awareness of world affairs and the effect on production. SHAPE was the acronym for
Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe.
Those Probus members who may have nursed hopes of an account of how we survived the Cold War were unfulfilled. There was, among members, mixed feelings of nostalgia and curiosity. However, we were given an insight in to the characteristics of some our senior commanders. One such example was that of a senior naval officer, who insisted upon taking a chair, and reading the ‘Daily Telegraph’ in the middle of the road, until he was allocated what he considered was a suitable seat. Although members’ curiosity may not have been satisfied, their imagination was stimulated.
The next meeting will be on 28 May, when the talk will be on the UK recovery. New members will be welcomed. Ted Gadsden
Get ready for summer - reduce excessive underarm sweating
Summer is upon us and unfortunately higher temperatures mean worsening of sweating issues for some of us. If you suffer from increased underarm sweating, worry about sweating through your clothes, work in close contact with others or in hot conditions or have to make public presentations then you may consider treatment.
What is hyperhidrosis? Hyperhidrosis means excessive sweating. It can be localised or affect the whole body. Sweat is your body’s temperature regulator. Severe underarm sweating is usually due to overactive sweat glands. In severe primary axillary hyperhidrosis, sweating significantly exceeds the body’s normal requirements for cooling. Sometimes excessive sweating is due to other medical causes and here treatment is directed towards the underlying cause. In this case sweating is usually generalised. Generalised hyperhidrosis (affecting the whole body) can be caused by some medications, illnesses including chronic infections, some cancers and by some hormonal conditions including the menopause, diabetes and an overactive thyroid gland. Sometimes no cause can be found. Anxiety, depression and stress can trigger or worsen hyperhidrosis.
How do I know if there is underlying problem? Usually symptoms of the underlying cause are present so if you are generally healthy chances are that you have primary hyperhidrosis. Some more pointers towards this are onset in young
age, involvement on both sides and cessation of sweating during sleep. Diagnosis is usually made on clinical picture but sometimes further testing is necessary.
What are the treatment options? When there is an underlying cause which can be treated, the hyperhidrosis can be cured. Surgical treatment can cure some people. Otherwise the aim is to control the condition. You can take some general measures such as daily showering, wearing loose cloths made of natural fibre and frequent change of clothing etc. Usual first line is anti-perspirants which you can buy over the counter. There are some stronger antiperspirants such as aluminium chloride hexahydrate, driclor or anhydrol Forte. Follow precautions as suggested by manufacturers. If sweating affects hands or feet there are treatment options such as medications and iontophoresis. If underarm sweating is significantly interfering with your daily activities and anti-perspirants have not worked, you may be a candidate for Botulinum toxin type A [botox] treatment. It is a simple and
In association with www.northwalshamdeals.co.uk
highly effective treatment option which can result in dryness for up to one year or more. Lack of awareness can be a problem as we often see patients who have suffered for years with this crippling condition. They are delighted by the results from such a simple, quick and painless procedure. What about a surgical solution for longer lasting results? We offer a laser procedure under local anaesthesia to destroy the sweat glands for those wishing a longer lasting solution to this problem. These five runners raised an impressive £13,783 of the £27,364 total raised by the group collectively.

STAR PAVING SERVICES
North Walsham Table Tennis NWSCA Retain KO Doubles Cup
The first of this season’s four Cup finals to take place was the Knockout Doubles as Backhanders battled NWSCA. After defeating NWSCB 5-0 in the semi of the Handicap Doubles, the Cromer Backhanders team of Paul Warner, Whil De Neve and Teucer Wilson have reached three Cup finals this season while defending champions NWSCA were represented by Tom Baldock-Yaxley, Andy Beane and John Vaughan. The final took place on neutral ground at Trunch Village Hall with Derek Philpott in the umpire’s chair. The opener pitted Wilson and Warner against Baldock-Yaxley and Vaughan - NWSCA were two points from the win at 9-5 in the third but dropped that set, however good serving from Baldock-Yaxley plus some raging returns from Vaughan saw NWSCA close out their win 11-4 in the fourth. Wilson and De Neve took the first set of the next battle, but once again after dropping a set NWSCA became very focused and determined as better control from Beane and Vaughan levelled the contest. Backhanders had a chance to take the third but it went to NWSCA 13-11 as Beane hit a winning return on the team’s second set-point. Good play from Backhanders forced errors as they took the
fourth even winning a point featuring a 360 degree spin from Wilson, but NWSCA led 5-3 at change of ends in the decider. The change of receiver made a difference, De Neve hit some good high top-spin and Backhanders came through 11-9 to win a match that was odd in terms of its ebbs and flows to level the final at 1-1.
The next two battles went to the holders in straight sets as NWSCA won the important points to lead 3-1 before a key contest pitted Warner and Wilson against Baldock-Yaxley and Beane. It went down to the wire and this fifth set was the biggest of the final so far where NWSCA displayed some nice touch to come through 11-6 and move one win from the Cup. The sixth battle saw Warner and De Neve face Beane and Vaughan with a comical point in the first seeing Vaughan on the stretch produce a ridiculous net and edge combination. In another entertaining battle NWSCA moved two sets ahead, let their grip slip in the third but they took their second Cup point in the fourth to seal their 5-1 win. Of course the overall match was much closer than that score suggests and the re-match between the same two teams in the Handicap Doubles Cup final
should be fascinating. Backhanders were back in first division action two days later as they hosted NWSCD’s Mary Sawyer, Philip Stone and Stuart Hook (playing up). Wilson had a match-point in the third but won the opener against Stone 14-12, 11-5, 12-14, 11-8. NWSCD only needed one point to escape from the bottom two and despite failing to convert two set-points in the first, Stone sealed this in five against De Neve. Warner saved match-points at 9-10 in both the fourth and fifth, but Stone won an entertaining battle 8-11, 11-9, 13-11, 10-12, 12-10. Sawyer and Stone beat Wilson and De Neve in the doubles in five, but with the remaining singles all going to the hosts, Backhanders won the match 7-3. Finally away from the home teams, Hunworth Poachers have won the second division by a mere two points after defeating runners-up Aylsham B 6-4 in a dramatic final match. NWSCC finished a very respectable fourth out all the nine teams with NWSCE also doing well to end up in seventh position.
