80 Years Young and still Bell Ringing

Covering North Walsham, Aylsham and surrounding villages in association with the Cromer Times and Sheringham Independent

On Sunday 18 May well known local Bell Ringer Derick Grey celebrated his 80th Birthday by ringing for service at his home tower, St James, Southrepps, something he has done for the last 30 years. He was given a signed card and bottle of wine by the congregation, not just for his birthday but to thank him for everything he has done for the church for many years.

Derick learnt to ring at Northrepps Church 53 years ago, being elected a member of the Norwich Diocesan Association of Bell Ringers two years later in 1963. He has rung 61 peals and several hundred quarter peals for the Association since.

80 Years Young and still Bell Ringing Continued from front cover...

Derick was a skilled carpenter by trade, working for Bullens of Cromer up to his retirement and these skills have been put to good use over the years with Derick being involved in many local bell restoration projects including at Southrepps in 1984 and most memorably at Gimingham in 1990 where he made, and along with other members of the NDA Bell restoration team, installed the new five bell frame to replace the rotten and unsafe three bell frame, the three bells in the tower were joined by two trebles, kindly donated by another ringer, to make a very fine ring of five bells. As well as being involved in these major projects Derick has made countless wheels and other fittings to enable other Norfolk Bell Towers to keep ringing.

Even at 80 years of age Derick continues to ring every Sunday where possible and also at the local weekday evening practices at Gimingham, Knapton, and his home tower of Southrepps, where he has been the Tower Captain since the restoration of the bells. As well as ringing for services, weddings and other special occasions, Derick has taught many local people to ring and has also spent countless hours maintaining the bells and carrying out other odd jobs in and around the Church.

On Friday evening practise at Knapton Church tower Derick was surprised with a cake and candles, nibbles and bubbly which we enjoyed before bell ringing practise.

NATIONAL BLOOD SERVICE BLOOD DONOR SESSIONS Thursday 12 June

COMMUNITY CENTRE, NEW ROAD, NORTH WALSHAM

1pm – 3.15pm and 4.45pm – 7pm

Give blood and be part of the Greatest Team in the World

NHS Blood and Transplant is asking new and existing donors to give blood and be part of the Greatest Team in the World to help maintain healthy blood stocks for patients throughout the busy summer months. The number of people donating blood often falls during the summer and this year’s football World Cup may present even more of a distraction. Jon Latham, Assistant Director for Donor Services and Marketing at NHS Blood and Transplant, said “We want to remind everybody that the need for blood will continue even when their attention turns to the beautiful game. While the overall need for blood within the NHS has been reducing, thanks to improvements in clinical practice and our work with hospitals, we still need more than 7,000 people to attend a blood donation session every day. Voluntary donors enable us to collect the amount of blood hospitals across England and North Wales need to treat patients. “So if you have an appointment coming up in June or July please keep it. And if you have time to donate, why not book an appointment to give blood and save lives? We particularly need our O Rh Negative and B Rh Negative blood donors and our platelet donors to keep attending. “The Greatest Team in the World is never complete, so if you’ve never given blood before come and join us. We always have spaces in our squad as we continually need new donors to replace our former team members who can no longer donate for reasons such as illness or pregnancy. So come on, why not get off the bench and join the Greatest Team in the World?” Every blood donation saves or improves the lives of up to three people, and if each member of the England World Cup squad gave blood, they would save or improve the lives of up to 69 people. In general, as long as you are fit and healthy, weigh over 7 stone 12 lbs (50kg) and are aged between 17 and 66 (up to 70 if you have given blood before) you should be able to give blood. If you are over 70, you need to have given blood in the last two years to continue donating.

For more information or to book an appointment visit www.blood.co.uk or call 0300 123 23 23.

Sharp Shooter Richard Powell to Lead North Walsham Photographic Group Photography has been an integral part of Richard Powell’s life ever since he was given his first camera 50 years ago.

Self-taught, learning by trial and error, through reading books and watching others, Richard gradually built up his knowledge and experience. He founded Buxton Photography Club 23 years ago and has also been closely associated with the Mundesley club and, more recently, North Walsham Photographic Group.

Listening to Richard, it becomes quickly apparent that his enthusiasm has not diminished; he remains keen to bring new ideas to the clubs’ nights, is supportive of disseminating knowledge, and is determined to retain a sense of fun in all proceedings. This is not to depreciate his achievements - he has been awarded ‘Photographer of the Year’ by his club several times, and has picked up other trophies over the years. Fifteen years ago he gained membership of the LRPS (Licentiateship of the Royal Photographic Society) and later the CPAGB (Credit for the Photographic Alliance of Great Britain), by submitting a panel of 12 different images displaying a range of photographic skills.

His gruff exterior belies a quick wit and friendly demeanour; his ‘people skills’ were learned from running his shop in Buxton for many years. His sense of humour and critical

observation stood him in good stead when he developed his repertoire as a wedding photographer, working with spontaneity and deference, pleasing the bride while appeasing the bride’s mother! And after 21 years and over 500 successful weddings, he can claim to be doing something right! His reputation has largely been by personal recommendation, mostly confined to Norfolk, with the occasional fling to outer regions such as London and Wales. He has also dabbled in pet photography (“never work with animals!”) and still organises the local playgroup photoshoot.

Richard learned photography with film and dark room processing, and while not a purist, thinks that his background has given him a greater appreciation for composing a picture ‘straight from the camera’, and doesn’t find much joy in spending hours embellishing or improving an image through software. He does own a DSLR and some high quality lenses and acknowledges that the digital format has made photography widely accessible, which is to be applauded. Outside of weddings, his passion is in capturing speed in sport, be it at the Isle of Man TT, Sandringham Horse trials or

Snetterton. He is also widely travelled and regards his holidays as “adventures with a camera”, producing a display for both Camera Clubs which are understandably leagues above the usual holiday snaps!

Richard will be leading four of the club’s meetings in the forthcoming months - the first being on the evening of 10 June, when he will organise an outdoor photo shoot challenge in Wroxham. If you are interested in joining the group, please contact Secretary Liz Fiddy on 01692 582793.

A VERY BIG THANK YOU…

We would like to pass on our thanks to the Bluebell pub , Marc James, and the great company of friends, neighbours and colleagues, who joined us for our farewell bash. We had great food, excellent entertainment and much fun with everyone who came along.

Although this was our farewell ‘do’, it was also a way of us giving thanks to everyone who touched our lives over the last 21 years. We have had a very fulfilling and eventful life since we have been here. So we would like to thank everyone in North Walsham who knows us, because without them, none of what we have achieved would have happened.

Thank you all and goodbye from us. Liz and Tom Cornwall

What a wonderful time to be in Cromer and what a great start to the season it’s been. The Crab and Lobster Festival was superbly supported and it’s terrific to see holidaymakers heading for the beaches once again.

We’ve been very busy here at the Grove and of course my fantastic fishmonger John Davies has been flat out getting in the most amazing seafood for me. I’ve always had scallops on the menu and this is a twist on our usual presentation – but just as nice of course!

With Father’s Day looming do be quick and book your table – at the time of writing we have a couple left but they are sure to go quickly! If you can’t get infor lunch then we are running the same menu in the evening; please give Dad a treat and bring him up to see us at the Grove. As always 01263512412 to book.

John Davies’ Queenie Scallops

John Davies’ Queenie Scallops 3 cloves garlic, finely chopped Lemon juice 300g Smoked Dapple 2 tablespoons breadcrumbs Maldon sea salt & pepper 4 x King scallop shells for serving (or shallow dishes)

1. Preheat the oven to gas mark 4 / 180degC

2. Melt the butter and clarify it by scooping off solids leaving a clear liquid butter.

3. Divide the scallops between the four shells or dishes. Add the chopped garlic to the butter and pour a tablespoon of each portion scallops, followed by a squeeze of lemon; lightly season with salt and pepper .

4. Sprinkle the smoked Dapple over the scallops, then the breadcrumbs.

5. Cook for eight minutes on the top shelf of the oven or until golden.

6. Serve with sourdough or some crusty bread.

WAITROSE GIVE and GAIN DAY

Partners from Waitrose North Walsham volunteered their time to promote Healthy Eating to two local schools on 'Give and Gain Day' on Friday 16 May. This date also coincided with Global Volunteering Day.

Afternoon of Celebration at Age UK North Norfolk

Trunchonbury – a date for your summer diary!

On the weekend of 22 August the idyllic village of Trunch in the heart of North Norfolk will come alive with the sound of Norfolk’s latest music festival, Trunchonbury.

Age UK North Norfolk was awarded a 3 year Big Lottery continuation grant, which we will be celebrating on 19 June 1pm – 3pm at Sheringham Community Centre, Holway Road, Sheringham.

Trunchonbury has grown from a small garden party in 2007, expanded to a private charity festival in 2009 and now for 2014 exploded into a full scale music and arts festival for the public!

The event will include other organisation that support North Norfolk along with music, song, laughter, refreshments, cake, raffle, information, dancing, and lots of fun!

The organisers aim to create the most memorable weekend our county has ever seen with two stages of live local talent, Trunchonbury Playhouse Theatre, Dance tent, Davenport’s Magic stage, healing fields, children’s activities, Buddhist tent, food stalls, craft stalls, workshops and the Trunchonbury Arms beer tent and the list expands every day.

All members of the public are invited to attend and will see what great services North Norfolk has to offer

Camping is available and all this year’s profits will be given to the Mundesley onshore lifeboat and to Trunch village.

More information and tickets are available online at www.trunchonburyfestival.co.uk and are selling fast. TRUNCHONBURY: A HAPPY PLACE FOR SMILEY PEOPLE

Music for a Summer’s Evening

The Cromer Orchestra will be performing a concert of Music for a Summer’s Evening at Cromer Parish Hall (opposite Boots) on Saturday 21 June at 7.30pm.

The programme will include a wide variety of music, from light classical to film and musicals by composers including Strauss, Webber, Sondheim, Offenbach, Debussy, Ennio Morricone and John Barry. The orchestra is conducted by Norman Moor and led by Michael Griffin and this will be their first public appearance. The orchestra is made up of local players (both young and old!) so come along and show your support for what promises to be a thoroughly enjoyable evening of ‘music you love’. Tickets are priced at £5 for adults/£2.50 for under 18s and include refreshments. Tickets are either available on the door, or in advance from Cromer Tourist Information Centre.

New players are always welcome to join the orchestra. Rehearsals are on Monday evenings at The Belfry Arts Centre, Overstrand starting at 7pm. For more details please contact Norman Moor on 01263 511600.

North Walsham and Dilham Canal Trust Open Days

North Walsham & Dilham Canal Trust will be holding Open Days at Ebridge Mill Pond, Happisburgh Road, North Walsham, NR28 9NH on Saturday 14 and Sunday 15 June between 10am and 5pm on each day.

Do come along and meet the people who are working hard to re-open Norfolk’s only locked canal and part of our industrial heritage. See where the wherries used to carry coal, cabbages etc. between Antingham, North Walsham, Honing, Dilham and the sea port of Great Yarmouth.

History - photographs – memories! Raffle – tombola – refreshments (lovely cakes!) – plant stall – bric-a-brac. Various information stalls – boats….and a lovely day out by and possibly on the canal!

Summer Rep at Sheringham Little Theatre

Sheringham Little Theatre runs a packed programme of drama, film and artistic events throughout the year. While its youth outreach work continues to give new opportunities to young people throughout the area, its famous Summer Repertory programme attracts theatre-goers from all across the country.

For years, summer repertory seasons flourished throughout the UK, bringing with them the chance for villages and towns to enjoy a varied selection of performances from a small group of professional actors.

Over time the practice declined, partly due to the time and effort it takes to organise and produce an entire series of plays in-house.

However, Sheringham Little Theatre’s Summer Repertory has survived, and today it remains one of the last theatrical seasons of its type in the entire country. This ensures that it receives a great deal of interest from theatre lovers and

seasonal tourists throughout its run; the surrounding community are extremely proud that their town is able to produce something which is so loved by so many.

Traditionally, Sheringham Little Theatre’s Summer Rep has lasted 10 weeks, with each play appearing twice within the programme. However, due to programming restrictions this year each play will only run once, making it more important than ever for people to catch it before it vanishes or sells out.

We open with FUNNY ABOUT LOVE, written by THERE’S A GIRL IN MY SOUP author Terence Frisby. Packed full of laughs and emotion, it’s especially exciting that Terence Frisby himself will be directing the production.

After that, there’s the unnerving psychological thriller KISS OF DEATH, followed by a hilarious play from the master of farce himself: Ray Cooney’s CAUGHT IN THE NET.

With the energy at full speed, we hit the darkly comic NEVILLE’S ISLAND, written by CALENDER GIRLS Dramatist Tim Firth, before finishing the season with the supernaturally satirical THE MYSTERY OF IRMA VEP. The combination of vampires, mummies and werewolves makes this a tour de force not to be missed as just two brave actors play all the parts.

All the money earned from this season will go directly towards sustaining the theatre for another year, ensuring that it can continue to offer a great range of programming to the people of North Norfolk.

The Sheringham Players go “ON THE RAZZLE”

To celebrate their 50th anniversary The Sheringham players will stage Tom Stoppard’s masterpiece ’ON THE RAZZLE’ directed by June Cooper assisted by Julian High (both founder members of The Sheringham Players.

‘ON THE RAZZLE’ – a prime example of Tom Stoppard’s mastery of farce and language consists of two hours of slapstick, shenanigans, mistaken identities, misdirected orders, malapropisms, double entendres and romantic complications. Set in Vienna in the 1880s and packed full

of laughter it promises to be an unmissable production.

The Sheringham Players invites you to join in their celebration of 50 years of theatre between the 11th and 14th June at 7.30pm at Sheringham Little Theatre.

Tickets are now on sale at £10 (to include a special souvenir programme) and are selling fast. To book ring the box office at Sheringham Little Theatre on 01263 822347 or book online at www.sheringhamlittletheatre.com

Chelsea inspired Garden Show raises £1840 for the Peter Purdy, owner of Woodgate Nursery is East Anglian Air Ambulance

pleased with the success of the Garden Show - “Saturday was our busiest day so far this year and I am delighted with the weekend and especially our charity raffle – which has this year raised three times as much as last year.

A Garden Show in Aylsham has raised £1840 for the East Anglian Air Ambulance with over 3000 visitors enjoying the glorious weather over the weekend at Woodgate Nursery.

Inspired by this week’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show, the Woodgate Nursery Garden Show showcases local companies’ gardening skills, with visitors voting for their favourite garden design. This year’s winner was the ‘Wind in the Willows’ garden, using a mixture of wild flowers, Iris and pond plants to create a garden full of colour and interest – designed by the Woodgate Nursery team.

I would like to thank all the garden designers and exhibitors for their hard work over the two days and everyone who donated to the East Anglian Air Ambulance.”

Wind in the Willows

In second place was Sue Bell Garden Designs of Little Melton for her ‘Time for Tea’ garden which had a more modern look with paving, box hedging and a mix of Heuchera and Salvia. Followed by Mark Sapwell and his ‘Woodland Walk’ a design of shade loving plants and native woodland trees. Kevin Myhill created a fantasy garden which proved a real attraction for the children with his hand built fairy castle complete with moat, fairies and crocodiles!

The Show attracted thousands of visitors from around the county, including budding young gardeners who took part in willow weaving demonstrations and a children’s treasure trail, while Purdy’s Tea Room served refreshments outside to visitors enjoying music from the talented Claire Lawrence.

THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER THE ARMCHAIR PLANT HUNTER

and I was very jealous of her opportunities to see familiar garden plants in their native habitat or perhaps to discover something new.

Although I have been lucky enough to visit India, Nepal and China as a tourist and seen some lovely flowers I have never been more than Sheringham Park - I guess we owe this spectacle of azaleas and a tourist treading well rhododendrons to the plant hunters who brought them back from worn routes and not the the Himalayas exciting paths followed by real travellers. Well, another Chelsea Flower Show is over and However as a birthday present I have been although I was not able to get there this year given the opportunity to feel involved in an the television coverage gives excellent views of the gardens and plants. see the whole of the show gardens. I did however miss Alan Titchmarsh from the BBC programmes as he seems to combine gardening with show business which is what makes Chelsea different from other flower shows.

Among the entries in the ‘fresh gardens’ category I was intrigued by the Cave Pavilion, Sophie Walker’s garden in a box, like a giant Victorian Wardian case. It was filled with plants collected in the wild by Bleddyn and Sue Wynn-Jones of Crug Farm, North Wales. It is amazing how every year more new plants are introduced after being brought back from all parts of the world continuing the tradition of the great Victorian and Edwardian plant hunters such as Ernest Wilson and Robert Forrest. I remember that when I was studying horticulture and was taught by Christine Walkden (before she found radio and TV fame) she used to regale us with accounts of her expeditions in the Alps to find new plants

of the appropriate authorities.

The party will consist of Dr Paul Bygrave, proprietor of Forde Abbey Plant Nursery in Dorset, Ray Brown of Plant World Seeds and David Howard, Head Gardener to Prince Charles at Highgrove House for ten years. Lhakpa, a highly qualified Sherpa guide completes the brave quartet. Their targets include new irises, poppies begonias and aquilegias

For my sponsorship I will get an account of the expedition and a description of their finds and most interestingly some of the seeds. When the party returns they will clean and package all seeds collected and post out allocations to shareholders in October and November 2014. I should be getting 25 packets of seed, mainly alpine plants, which I will then be challenged to germinate and grow.

I will publish the results of this expedition in due course and list the seeds that I received and if any readers are interested in sharing any of the seeds they will be most welcome.

After years of planning, three experienced botanists and plant growers will be making the arduous trek up some of the tallest mountains Bob Wilkinson, 01263 825364 in the foothills of Everest. It will be hard work for them at that altitude, staying in tents and remote villages to collect seeds of rare flowers and hopefully find new plants not yet in cultivation. Science Success at Paston Sixth Form College

The Royal Society of Chemistry runs a fiendishly difficult competition each year to find the best chemical brains in the Country. A competition so challenging, that to score even one single mark is counted an achievement. This year competitors were asked questions ranging from how to control phosphate levels in blood, how to synthesise a drug used to treat acne, and how to determine the structures formed between natural gas Photo: Greg Hayward and water in deep oceans.

As always, Paston Sixth Form College students rose to the challenge and between them, Sam Fisher, Emily Grapes, Lucy Handford and Daniel Wicks were worthy winners of certificates including silver and two bronze awards. These were presented to them in the new £1.5 million Scarburgh Science Centre by Kevin Grieve, Paston Sixth Form College Principal.

KITCHEN FRONTS of Norfolk

Another publishing success for author Mark

Mark Brown, a Paston Sixth Form College A’ level English Literature student, has just published his second novel “A Kingdom Ruled by Fear”. It was Mark’s history coursework on the Russian revolution which inspired him to write his new novel. Set in a fantasy kingdom, the novel is based around a rebellion and the consequences of the event.

Mark is planning to start a creative writing degree course at the University of East Anglia in September. This novel along with Mark’s Photo: Greg Hayward first novel, “A New Order” is published on the Amazon booklist. He is now focusing on his A’ level exams, but he already has an idea for a third novel.

Felbrigg Hall –

a unique volunteering experience

Felbrigg Hall, a jewel in the National Trust’s collection in Norfolk, urgently needs more volunteers to act as room guides particularly during the summer months when we open 7 days a week. Year on year visitor numbers are rising – over 100,000 last season.

As a volunteer myself I was initially worried about learning about the Hall and its history but my worries soon disappeared after shadowing an existing guide for a few sessions before taking on a room on my own. The NT provides excellent room guide folders which will help you answer any questions you might be asked and remember that you will generally know more than any visitor. However through interaction you can always learn from some of the visitors thus extending your own knowledge.

The opportunity to interact with the public and help them to have a wonderful day out is very rewarding and you can choose to work morning or afternoon shifts to suit your availability. Very soon you will feel part of the friendly team of volunteers some of whom have decades of experience at Felbrigg but always welcome new guides who will hopefully provide the next generation of volunteers.

Felbrigg offers a unique volunteering opportunity and although there is no direct financial reward you will receive a National Trust car parking sticker (useful if you want to visit other NT car parks locally), a mileage allowance which subsidises your travel costs and at the discretion of the local NT management a Volunteer membership of the NT after a qualifying number of hours worked. For younger volunteers a history of volunteering for such a well-respected organisation as the National Trust is a useful addition to your CV.

For further information contact Felbrigg directly on 01263 837444 Tom Dick

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

It is always very sad when we take in a cat because their owner has died. Having been well loved and cared for they must find it confusing to end up in a cat pen being cared for by strangers. One such cat is George, 8 years old, ginger and fluffy, who arrived recently. Obviously well loved, he has a lovely nature but is a little bit overweight. This gorgeous lad now has his food intake monitored and controlled and his vet is very impressed with the amount of weight he has lost on his last visit. We should point out that it is important not to lose the weight too quickly as this is not good for the cat and can cause other health problems.

When George goes to a new home his new owner will be given advice as to his diet to ensure he does not put the weight on again. Although essentially a lap cat, George would also benefit from a new home where he is encouraged to play, something which will also help keep him nice and slim. We do know that George does not like dogs but he is OK with children, providing they treat him with respect, so would make an ideal addition to many households.

After a few challenges we have finally been able to arrange a date for our Hog Roast at Dilham. This year it will take place on Sunday 6th July

North Walsham Market Cross WI

Kim welcomed members and guests to the May meeting, which opened with the singing of Jerusalem.

As this was our resolution meeting she spoke of how the resolution platform had proved to be both influential and powerful over the years since the WI movement started which is very close to a century ago and she highlighted a resolution from 1918 that proposed to offer the provision of sanitised housing for woman in the country.

A lively discussion followed before the vote which was decided by a show of hands and our delegate will be informed of our decision. Tins are still needed for the fun day in the park - if it's in a tin it's wanted.

Margaret Bane was pleased to tell members that the darts team had won the first match of the season and they were looking forward to the next competition which will be against Spixworth on 29 May.

with our friends and fellow cat lovers arriving from noon to enjoy the day. As well as the Hog Roast there will be the usual accompaniments, plus salads, a choice of dessert and a bar for liquid refreshment. As several of our supporters are vegetarians they too are catered for. However, beware the dreaded Car Park Attendant who will once again be on duty ready to fine anyone who disobeys his rules. Tickets must be purchased prior to the event and remain at £10 each, available by either ringing 01692 535858 or emailing northwalshamcp@gmail.com. With our party tents in place we do not have to worry if it is not fine so why not come and join us at this popular event.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit cats.org.uk/northwalsham for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

If however you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). for the pretty table posies.

Our next meeting is on 11 June and our speaker is Mr Lynford Brunt on how he became a Magistrate.

We meet on the second Wednesday of the month and we are now installed into our new venue at The St. Nicholas Room (this is accessed through the main St Benet Hall door. and the start time is now 7.30pm. A warm welcome is given to all so why not come and give us a try. Please contact Kim Reynolds for details on 01692 406246

Local campaigners celebrate victory in campaign to improve Sunday rail service in North Norfolk

Councillor Eric Seward and North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb are celebrating victory, as Greater Anglia announced that their enhanced Summer Sunday service would in future be run throughout the year.

Eric Seward said “This change will be a valuable boost for towns and villages served by the Bittern Line. From 18 May this year, they will benefit from the enhanced summer Sunday service all year round, with six extra trains in each direction every Sunday. This will be valuable for local residents and tourists alike, and I know from speaking to residents here in North Walsham how many people support this change.”

Norman Lamb said “We have been pressing Network Rail to agree to the timetabling changes that would facilitate the enhanced service throughout the year. After we secured this commitment a few days ago, I am delighted that Greater Anglia has responded so promptly in confirming that they will run this improved service throughout the year.”

I help to organise a group for those of us who have been mentally ill. We meet every Tuesday at Stalham Youth Club, Recreation Road, Stalham from 11am to 2pm. One of the members cooks us lunch and tea or coffee are readily available. The first week is free but then we pay £4 each to cover lunch and the rent of the premises. It is a casual group and you can chat about whatever you like. There are five pool tables which are free to use. We are arranging several outings during the summer. Transport is limited but we have Chris in Trimingham, David in Buxton, Gary in Catfield and myself in North Walsham who can offer lifts. If anyone is interested please contact me on 01692 402038 or 07919 865413 Yours sincerely, Richard Baker

Dear Margaret,

This year it was looking like a bumper year for wild flowers. Highways said they had listened and left the road verges alone and only started to cut the parts we need to see at junctions at the end of May. On the way to work one Friday morning I even spotted wild poppies along the Aylsham Road in North Walsham - a real pleasure to see. Sadly by home time these had all been cut down even though these were not causing any visibility problem. A complete waste of time and money, and now other areas have had the same. Even some of the high banks. Of course foot ways and park flower beds need doing, but the wild areas need to be left at this time of year. You only need to get out of the car and look over the bank or hedge to notice the lack of wildness in our countryside. For many miles the roadside is the only wild parts we have. We are told by the county council there is no money so our recycling centre will start charging or not open on weekdays, but they have plenty of money to chop wild flowers down in the summer - the very time butterflies and bees need them. It looks a mess. Why is this being done? It makes NO environmental or economic sense. Yours sincerely David G Spencer, Southrepps

Car Parking Proposal by Local Conservatives

After success in reducing the costs of the tidal surge to under £600,000 through consistent and continued negotiation with the Government, Conservatives on North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) have called for council officers to produce a report which will examine options for boosting local businesses by laying the foundations for the introduction of a 30 minutes free parking period between 9am and 9.30am and the removal of the evening charges in all North Norfolk car parks.

Your local Conservatives on North Norfolk District Council are doing all they can to promote and encourage tourism and businesses. At a time of great austerity they have supported residents by reducing inefficiency, cutting the number of senior managers, freezing council tax and all the while fighting to maintain front-line services.

Councillor Rhodri Oliver, North Norfolk District Council Deputy Leader and Portfolio

Holder for Corporate Assets said “We are delighted to finally be in the financial position to bring forward these options for examination.

Car parking has been a serious issue for residents and tourists alike and while it significantly subsidises other key services that we provide to the public we feel it is vital that we take this opportunity to help our businesses and communities. North Norfolk must remain competitive as the recovery begins and I hope this will be a real boost to enterprise and residents alike”.

Councillor Tom FitzPatrick Conservative Group Leader and Leader of North Norfolk District Council said “We were very keen to consider introducing these changes at the time of the District Council's Budget in February, but in view of the huge uncertainty over funding following the need to dig into the Council's financial reserves following the severe damage caused by last December’s

tidal surge and storm, it was not deemed prudent to consider changes until the likely cost of the damage to the Council became clearer.

I am pleased that we are now in a position where we can look at making these positive changes for the benefit of both businesses and residents. I can see the proposed half hour free period of being particularly useful for encouraging people who just want to make some quick purchases to use their local shop”.

Councillor Russell Wright Portfolio Holder for Business and Economic Development and Tourism said “I welcome these proposals which will provide further help to the economy of North Norfolk and encourage people to use our local businesses. The proposed removal of the evening charge will encourage people to use businesses and facilities near our car parks”.

New cash injections for our ambulance trust welcomed by campaigners

The Act on Ambulances campaigners have welcomed news that the East of England Ambulance Service Trust is to receive a cash injection of up to £15 million from local Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) within the NHS.

North Norfolk CCG, which has the worst response times in the East of England, is set to pledge an extra £400,000.

The Act on Ambulances campaign was set up by North Norfolk Labour Party campaigners following concerns that the government was planning to cut the Trust’s budgets. These cash injections from CCGs will ensure there is investment in the 999 service.

Denise Burke, an Act on Ambulances campaigner and Labour’s Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for North Norfolk, said “We welcome more investment in the ambulance service here in the East of Eng-

land from the CCGs. Dr Anthony Marsh, the top boss at the ambulance trust, told residents at our public meeting last month that the service needed better funding in order to purchase up-to-date vehicles and fund more qualified staff. This is a positive move and answers some of our campaigners’ concerns. I hope the investment will show a boost in ambulance response times.”

Norfolk Wherry Brass Race Night success sets the Band off on the Gallop to Cheltenham Finals

Norfolk Wherry Brass, a local Brass Band based in Neatishead, is delighted with the support received for our recent fundraising event organised to help the band in representing the London and Southern Counties Region at the National Brass Band Championships in September.

As the venue for the finals is Cheltenham Race Course the band organised a ‘Race to Cheltenham Night’ and hosted 22

the event in fancy dress which raised over £1000 towards expenses for the trip. Thanks are extended to the businesses which sponsored the races including Scarborough Hill Hotel, Wayford Bridge Inn, The White Horse Inn Neatishead, Indulge and Simply Massage in Barton Turf, Three Cottages Fish and Chip Shop and Pamper Nails of North Walsham, The Bank Restaurant Sheringham and Rocket Cafe Cromer, the Lighthouse Inn at Walcott and Davenports Magic Kingdom.

Join us for East Anglia’s Biggest Birthday Party

East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) is inviting the people of East Anglia to join them in celebrating the first birthday of HRH Prince George of Cambridge by holding a birthday party in his honour on Tuesday 22 July.

The charity, which has HRH The Duchess of Cambridge as its Royal Patron, is encouraging as many schools, groups, companies and individuals as possible to hold a Royal birthday party on or around Tuesday 22 July. Party organisers will be encouraged to invite friends and colleagues to attend parties and make a donation to EACH.

Her Royal Highness, The Duchess of Cambridge, became Royal Patron of EACH in January 2012 and has provided the charity

with many great benefits including raising awareness and understanding of services, boosting the media profile and inspiring people to raise funds.

Camilla Haycock, EACH Fundraising Development Manager, said “We’re hoping as many people as possible across East Anglia will hold a birthday party on this special day, or as near to the day as they can, to help us celebrate the first birthday of the Prince. It’s a great excuse to have a bit of fun with party games and cake while raising funds for an important local charity.

“Tuesday 22 July is really near to the end of term for most schools in East Anglia and we think it would be a terrific way for children to have a bit of fun just before the school holidays, making party hats and playing games.

Companies and organisations can also get into the party mood by holding a cake sale.

“It would be exciting to try and create some sort of record in East Anglia for the most people attending a birthday party on a day and we would love to hear from anyone who is interested in joining us.

“The birth of Prince George raised thousands of pounds for EACH with fans making donations in lieu of buying and sending gifts and we hope we can inspire people to raise funds again.”

North Walsham Scouts - Come and see us on Sunday 29 June at the North everything else, Scouting is all about enjoying Walsham Fun-Day - Join the adventure!

Grown-ups - You don’t have to be an adventurer like Bear Grylls to get involved with Scouting. Do you have first aid knowledge? Are you good with numbers? Handy in the kitchen? Or are you a DIY whizz? We all have useful skills and you can volunteer and help in many ways.

Volunteering with us is easy, fun and flexible – how much time you give is completely up to you. Whether you help out once a fortnight, month or term or just at special events or camps, there is bound to be a role you can play, and no matter how you get involved, we'll make sure you're properly trained and supported.

Many of our helpers and leaders are parents of our youth members because they’ve seen firsthand how Scouting benefits young people and want to give something back. It’s also a chance to spend more time with your children and learn new skills. Speak to your child’s leader to discuss how you might become involved.

Children & Young Adults - Being a Scout gives you the chance to get stuck into loads of activities you wouldn’t normally get to do. Chief Scout Bear Grylls says life is about grabbing opportunities! We agree! Above

yourself, whatever you're doing – and there'll always be plenty to do! Not many people know about the stars at night, how to sail a dinghy or make a sausage stew on a campfire, but you soon will! Scouting helps you learn lots of new and amazing skills – and you get to earn badges and rewards along the way.

Council launches Health and Fitness Roadshows in primary schools

North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) is set to deliver an exciting programme of Health and Fitness Roadshows to primary schools across North Norfolk.

The programme aims to ensure that every child becomes more active more often and ultimately achieves life-long participation in activity. Sessions are already taking place in 14 schools across the district, where NNDC staff have been delivering hour long practical and theory sessions to help children improve their fitness, and encouraging them to share their learning with parents and carers. Children who take part are given workbooks to complete during the five week programme. They also receive activity cards and are encouraged to complete 20 or more activities during the programme. Children who complete 20 or more activities within five weeks are rewarded with a free swim pass for use at Victory Swim and Fitness Centre in North Walsham or Splash Leisure and Fitness Centre in Sheringham.

NNDC’s Deputy Leader, Rhodri Oliver said “We are delighted to be launching this programme which is specifically targeted to primary schools in the area. The sessions have been designed to encourage children to develop a positive attitude to their health and wellbeing from an early age and to help them learn about how their body works. We’ve already received feedback to indicate that the children taking part are really enjoying the sessions they’ve taken part in.”

Northrepps Primary School Head teacher, Mrs Angie Hamilton, said “The children have enjoyed the activity. They started with a bleep test and were amazed at one of the boys who reached 11! They are all focussed on improving their fitness and getting healthier. Having a goal to beat is spurring them on even more. The hands-on elements of the practical sessions have been wonderful. And especially memorable has been examining the fat content in food.” Any school wishing to get involved and to understand more about the programme works should contact Wyn Nurse: email wyn.nurse@north-norfolk.gov.uk or 07795 265671.
