Covering North Walsham, Aylsham and surrounding villages in association with the Cromer Times and Sheringham Independent
North Walsham and Dilham Canal Trust Open Days Weekend The weather had cooled substantially from earlier in the week but that did not prevent hundreds of people turning out to visit Ebridge Mill Pond over the weekend of 14 and 15 June.
he history of the canal was presented in photographs, maps, literature and copies of the original Acts of Parliament dated 1812 and 1866, which are even now extant (still law). Various opportunities were open to the visitors including tombola, raffle, bird knowledge game, cakes and beverages together with DVDs of the restoration work. The Canoe-man of Wroxham was present, a friend of the Trust brought along his sailing boat and an eco-friendly electric-powered outboard vessel made trips along the canal, giving a lot of visitors a chance to see and feel what it is like to be afloat on this unique waterway.

North Walsham and Dilham Canal Trust Open Days Weekend
A surprising number of our visitors recounted tales of the times when they, or a member of their family, had worked at this mill or had learned to swim and did so up and down the canal. Fishing was also a great past-time of these folk and we look forward to these activities returning.
A number of the Canal Trustees and members of the Trust were present running the various activities, discussing the project and passing on or correcting information of which many visitors were not aware. Overall, we were very pleased indeed with the amount of interest being shown in all aspects of our work – both the physical and the political! The number of signatures now on the Petition in support of the restoration of the Canal is now well over the 2,100 mark! Our membership secretary has added another score of names to the list and a further number have expressed an interest in joining the working parties.
Adding to our attraction, we were pleased to welcome some members of the Norfolk Vintage and Classic Tractor Club of Bacton displaying their treasured vehicles on the verge of the Millpond. If you wish to see them in action, go along to their Ploughing Competition day on Sunday 21 September in Bacton.

NORTH WALSHAM IN BLOOM
North Walsham in Bloom would like to say a big thank you to all who helped and contributed to our Town Collection on the 12th June. We raised £153.33 for our funds. Unfortunately, due to a misunderstanding, we were not able to have our Plant Sale as usual in the Church Approach. This we apologise for. We hope to be able to have a Plant Sale on the second Thursday in June next year as well as one at our Coffee Morning in St Benets Hall on Thursday 18th September this year. Thanks must surely go to Sandra Bonney and her band of helpers, mostly husbands and partners of our ladies, who put themselves out considerably to collect shingle from a good friend in Longbarrow Drive to put at the base of our boat on the Norwich Road. The moles had done so much digging beneath the boat that it had started to sink. A lot of effort, blood, sweat and tears went into the undertaking to rectify the problem. Our thanks also go to the very kind Paston College student who gave us a lovely box of chocolates to eat whilst we were planting the new bed in Grammar School Road. There are some very kind young people in our town. Unfortunately it is normally the ones who cause problems that we hear about. Two of our ladies went to the churchyard to work on the cross this morning and found that the sponsorship sign had been ripped from the flower bed, damaging several of the flowers, and left laying on the grass. This is a sign that was set in concrete, so it must have taken considerable effort to pull it from the ground. However, just as we were wondering how to get the offending concrete reinforced sign back to our car for safe keeping, a very kind gentleman from one of the banks in the town came to our assistance and carried it for us. This somewhat restored our faith in human nature.
Blankets galore!
When a call went out from the Norfolk & Norwich Hospital premature baby unit for knitted blankets just 20 inches square, craft producers and customers at Aylsham's weekly Country Market were quickly on the case. The end result was no less than 26 of the blankets delivered to the hospital, via John Lewis' store in the City. Leading 'crafter' at the Country market, Jean Hinchliffe, commented "I'm a dedicated knitter as are some of my colleagues in the Market's craft section. Add in some very generous customers who share our interest, and very soon we were up to a quite a number of blankets. It's great to know that they are going to help premature babies and I'd like to thank everyone involved." As well as hundreds of craft items, Aylsham Country Market a cooperative of local home-based producers - sells cakes, desserts, savouries, cookies, preserves, plants, flowers, eggs and goats meat. It is open every Friday morning in the Town Hall from 8.30am to noon.

THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER HOW TO GET THE GARDEN READY FOR YOUR HOLIDAY
‘We arrived home after a fortnight’s holiday to find our grass had changed from velvet to pasture, the hedges seemed to have grown with a kind of surreptitious spurt, the yew cones in front of the house had, I swear, grown six inches, the cardoons and hostas had been terribly ravaged by slugs, bindweed, thistles and nettles nestled insouciantly among their cultivated cousins’ This was Monty Don’s account of returning to his garden after a holiday (from the Ivington Diaries)
For gardeners, the summer holidays can be a worrying time. From spring to summer there are so many jobs to be done that it is impossible to identify time when we are not sowing, planting, watering or harvesting and can safely leave. When we are away there are the constant thoughts of home, are the pot plants dying, are the hanging baskets and tubs drying out and why am I away when the first tomatoes are ripening?
To avoid such disasters a little pre planning can be a great help and the following suggestions which might be of use...
PREPARE THE GARDEn A day or so before you drive away cut the grass and trim the edges of your lawn. Not only will this make your house look occupied but there is a chance that everything will be relatively neat when you return. Remove any weeds from your beds as they will compete for available water with your plants. Water everything thoroughly and mulch the soil with anything available. It is always good advice to water deeply throughout the season as this encourages plants to send roots deeper and they will be better able to cope with periods of drought.
COnTAInERS The absolute ideal is to install some form of automatic irrigation system but, for most of us, all that is necessary is to move hanging baskets and containers from a sunny patio or terrace and put them in a shady place where they will dry out less quickly. Water well and shade the plants with netting as this will further reduce evaporation.
HOUSEPLAnTS Plants sitting on a sunny windowsill will need lots of water while you are away, so move them to out of direct sunlight and water well. If you have a lot of plants soak a towel in water and put it in the bottom of the bath or shower and and stand the plants on the wet towel.
FRUIT AnD VEGETABLES Stake plants such as tomatoes and tie them in firmly to the cane. Plants always seem to grow faster while you are away! Again automatic watering devices can be very useful but proper watering and mulching will suffice unless there is a heat wave.
FInD A GARDEn FRIEnD The very best solution, of course, is to find a relative or neighbour who will come into your garden, greenhouse and house to look after the plants. Someone who is as keen on gardening as you are is ideal and you can then offer to look after their garden in return. Make it easy for your gardening buddy, show them round and point out what needs to be done. Leave watering cans, already full, by the outdoor tap. Group your pots together to make watering easier. Run out the hose in the vegetable patch. Invite your garden sitter to harvest anything that matures while you are away (Not only does this mean that they are more likely to visit regularly but will also encourage continuous ).
Don’t expect perfection however thoroughly you plan for your holiday but this advice might mean you do not come home to parched plants. Have a good time. Bob Wilkinson
Thorpe Market Churchyard Conservation
Thorpe Market Church has won numerous awards for its churchyard. This year a new maintenance schedule for the churchyard at St Margaret’s church is being established, supported by Norfolk Wildlife Trust and with the hands-on help from the Unpaid Work Unit Churchyard Management Project.
A recent survey has again declared Thorpe Market churchyard to be “One of the most botanically rich in Norfolk, with 3 of the 6 churchyard dependent species, several scarcer species and abundant attractive meadow flowers.”
The whole churchyard will be cut and raked by the unit in July and again in the autumn. After the July cut the paths and areas around the modern graves will be maintained by volunteers using machinery belonging to the church. Offers of help from parishioners to keep our churchyard beautiful by assisting with cutting the close-mown areas would be warmly appreciated. As little as two hours a fortnight during the growing season would make a big contribution to the overall appearance.
If you feel you can help us please email info@thorpemarket.org.uk. In association with www.northwalshamdeals.co.uk

Summer lemon curd tart
This month’s recipe from the kitchens of the Grove comes from Hanna Siggee, one of our chef-de-parties.
“I’ve been working at the Grove for three months now and I am absolutely loving being here. We have a lovely atmosphere, the chance to prepare and work with superb local Norfolk produce, and having the experience of being able to pick and use our own vegetables from the garden, grown by John and Ann Graveling, the second generation of owners here.
“I’m currently studying for my level 3 NVQ at Norwich City College and long-term I would love to be able to work my way up to head chef at somewhere like the Grove – that would be amazing.
“I’ve had the recipe for my lemon curd tart for around four years now. The key is getting the right balance between the sweetness and the lemon, and making sure the pastry is perfect – not too dry, not too soggy. I like to make the
curd really lemony and so far it seems to have gone down very well this summer! Please do come in and try it next time you are in town.”
SHORTCRUST PASTRy ½ pack butter ½ pack lard 500g flour 100ml water
■ Pour your flour, lard and butter into a food processor and blend for ten pulses, before setting to constant and slowly adding water until the pastry forms a ball. ■ Wrap in clingfilm and set to rest to twenty minutes. ■ Once rested roll out to 3mm thickness and mould into greased tartlet cases. ■ Using a fork poke a few holes in the bottom of the case to prevent bubbling and bake on gas mark 4 until golden New brown.
CURD 4 x large lemons 200g caster sugar 100g unsalted butter 3 x large eggs 1 x large egg yolk

the sugar into a heat-proof bowl. ■ Place over a pan of boiling water (making sure the water doesn’t touch the bottom of the bowl) and whisk until the butter is melted. ■ Add the eggs and yolk and whik continuouslyuntil fully combined. ■ Cook out for ten minutes, stirring occasionally. ■ Seive the zest out and add the mix to the tart cases, then set in the fridge.

The vibrancy of India visited Millfield Primary School in North Walsham on Thursday 12 June as the pupils celebrated Indian culture throughout the day and came to school dressed in traditional Indian costumes or in the colours of the Indian flag.
The air was filled with exotic spices as the children from Upper Phase had various food tasting sessions throughout the day; and the plates were completely empty by the end of each session!
There were different activities, which enabled the children to learn about Indian culture some of which included Bollywood dancing, art activities learning how to make Rangoli patterns and Batik designs, and traditional Indian games which were played outside in the summer sun.
The children also had sessions in spiritualism and yoga, which incorporated learning about relaxation and Mindfulness.
At lunchtime the hall added to the allure of Indian themed food, which offered mouth-watering curry and samosa’s. The children enjoyed the meal with great enthusiasm and the succulent scents filled the school for the rest of the day!
Many children had stated throughout the day how much fun they had learning about India and how they wished it could happen every year. The day was inspired by one of our International Schools links in India, Mr Smith and Ms Croft had just returned from the school and started the week off by giving a special assembly showing photographs of their trip and their experiences over there. The day definitely inspired the children to want to travel and experience different cultures and countries. In association with www.northwalshamdeals.co.uk

A TASTE OF THE MUSICALS The Mundesley Players are currently rehearsing for their next production, 'A Taste of The Musicals'.
After directing a very successful, sell-out, run of Les Miserables at Sheringham Little Theatre, Tracey Loftus is producing and directing 'A Taste of The Musicals' for the Mundesley Players. Tracey's love of theatre began at university, where she was involved in the production and stage management of a number of shows. Tracey has also appeared in a number of musicals including 'Me and My Girl' and 'Annie'. She has also enjoyed acting in murder mystery evenings on the North Norfolk Railway. Some of The young cast of Les Miserables have joined the Players for this show, including Zaira Palumbo, a classically trained soprano singer who was recently placed within the top eight soloists in the Llangollen International Music Eisteddfod in
Wales. Zaira has been offered a place at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance in London where she will study her undergraduate vocal performance degree.
Anthony Loftus joins us after appearing as Jean Valjean in Les Miserables. Anthony joined the Broadland Youth Choir at the age of nine and enjoyed performing in 'Joseph' with them. Anthony achieved his Grade 8 Gold Medal award from LAMDA in year 11.
Joe Annison, Sam Thompson, Jodie Wiggins, and Josh Hinds are also joining the Mundesley Players for this production, fresh from their roles in Les Miserables. We also welcome several members of The Broadland Youth Choir.
The production runs from Tuesday 29 July to
Colby Church: not normal, even for Norfolk
Colby Church Open Day on Saturday 19 July allows visitors to enjoy the church’s unusual features, as well as traditional English afternoon teas and local walks.
In a county blessed with beautiful village churches, Colby stands out. In 1749 it was in such a bad state of repair that the north and east walls were pulled down. So Colby St Giles is a mix of 13th century flint and 18th century brick. As a result, and thanks also to a slightly lopsided aspect, it’s a true celebration of that great Norfolk axiom: do different. “And it’s all the better for it!” says Ada Hooker who, at 93, has been a church stalwart for over 70 years.
She is one of the organisers of the Open Day when visitors will be able to come and enjoy the unusual features of a church that is usually locked up. The delightful surrounds will be turned into a traditional English tea ‘room’ and there will be stalls including homemade cakes and jams.
“It will be a lovely day out, for young and old,” says Ada. “The church has some interesting architectural features and the village has some seriously good cooks!”
There will also be free walking guides with maps of local routes, mostly off-road, lasting from 10 minutes to around one hour. For anyone wanting to have
Tickets are now on sale at Jupe, Station Road, Mundesley, alternatively you can ring 07503 297602 and reserve your ticket. their cake then walk it off, the Open Day is the ideal event.
The reason for the frivolity is partly to celebrate the church, and partly to raise funds. “Back in 1749 they sold two of the three big bells to pay for the repairs,” says Ada. “We don’t have that option, but we have to do some major repair works and need to raise £20,000 – so please come along if you can!” The church will be open from 10am until 5pm and entry is free. There is parking on site. Colby Church can be found just off Long Road Colby, about one and a half miles east of the A140, four miles north of Aylsham.

A Judge for the People: Bill Day A photographic competition is being organised by North Walsham Photographic Group, and will be held at the Atrium during the third week of August.
The Group is delighted that Bill Day has agreed to be the judge for the second year running. In conversation with Bill, I asked him why he enjoyed judging, since it can often be a thankless task, as judges are so often criticised for their decisions (unless you are the winner!). Bill has a philosophical approach to his judging: he knows amateur club photographers need encouragement and constructive critique, but above all he wants his judging to be regarded as contributing to an enjoyable and entertaining evening, and has a sharp sense of humour to complement his repertoire. He also recognises that huge effort is put into the production of pictures, and their effort should be respected.
A member of North Norfolk Photographic Society for many years, Bill became a judge with the support of Irene Froy, his early mentor, (who has gained many awards, both nationally and internationally, for her exceptional service to photography), and is in constant demand by the many clubs around East Anglia. He regards himself as more a conventional photographer and questions the blurring of boundaries between ‘modern’ photographic techniques and graphic art.
So how does he judge pictures? Apart from the established technical features, such as attention to detail, general rules of composition, leading lines and deciding the points of interest or focus, he acknowledges that much is subjective. “Do I like what I’m looking at?” is a starting point, and analysis will follow. He intuitively knows whether a picture has been produced by an experienced photographer or not, and structures his critique accordingly: encouragement and advice for the novice, and
more critical comments for the competent.
He is most supportive of North Walsham club for the effort it makes to run events such as the Public Competition. In such events, as a judge, he doesn’t concern himself so much with the refinements of photography, but sees the photos as an expression of the keen individual, and comments accordingly. His critiques on the photographs in the public competition promise to be thoughtful, generous and humorous.
The competition runs from 19 to 23 August, and is open to everyone, regardless of age. If you are interested in submitting a photograph, please contact the competition secretary, Rachel Farrow, on 01692 406526 for further details.
Toastmaster of the Year Award
Karen Battrick was presented with Toastmaster of the Year Award at North Norfolk Speakers Club on Wednesday 25 June.
‘I was both delighted and surprised to win this award,’ said Karen. ‘I joined North Norfolk Speakers Club to gain confidence and skill in speaking and giving presentations - for me a very daunting prospect - but the members make it fun and it’s thanks to their support and guidance that I am now much more confident. I thoroughly enjoy it and recommend the club to anyone.’ Karen Battrick receives Toastmaster of the Year Award from David Beecroft, President of North Norfolk Speakers Club

Talk about being a Good Neighbour
It takes many things to make a community but a very important part of what it means to be a community is people looking out for one another and being there to give help and support when it’s needed. Being good neighbours, in short.
Neighbourliness is the social glue that bonds communities together. It helps create an environment where people feel safe and secure because they have a genuine connection with one another. However, in the modern world people are increasingly mobile. Residents move away from the places they were brought up in and new people move in to replace them. The result is that it’s increasingly difficult to have that genuine connection with one another with the consequence that some people can become isolated and feel increasingly unsafe and insecure.
To help address the issue, Good Neighbour Schemes have been successfully set up elsewhere in Norfolk and beyond.
county and, thanks to funding from the County Council’s Healthy Communities project, they can now assist with setting up a number of new Schemes.
While the scope of activities Good Neighbour Schemes can undertake is very broad, typically they assist more vulnerable, disabled or frail local residents in simple ways such as by befriending them, helping with domestic tasks like mowing the garden or putting up curtains or changing light bulbs, arranging appointments, helping with shopping, or giving a lift to shops or appointments. The work of each Scheme is undertaken by local volunteers guided by a steering committee of local people.
Norfolk Rural Community Council (Norfolk RCC) is a local charity which works to help rural communities identify and address their needs. Norfolk RCC has already helped set up several Good Neighbour Schemes across the
Cromer has been identified as a community that may benefit from having a Scheme so Henry Meiklejohn from Norfolk RCC will be giving a short talk about what’s involved in Cromer Methodist Church Hall (on Hall Road) on Tuesday 22nd July 2014 starting at 7.00pm.
Good Neighbour Schemes are a great way to feel part of the community, to meet new people and to make a difference in your community, so please come along if you might like to get involved or are simply interested in finding out a bit more about it.
In the meantime, if you have any questions about Good neighbour Schemes please contact Henry Meiklejohn at norfolk RCC by emailing henry@norfolkrcc.org.uk or by calling 01362 698216.
West Runton Pavilion Celebration Night
The West Runton Pavilion, which was a famous local venue for countless nationally famous groups and artists to flood the British and World rock scene, is being commemorated 25 years after it was demolished!
On Saturday 4 October a special night is being held at the West Runton Social Club to bring back as many memories as we can in recognising the importance of this once proud and vibrant venue.
A small and active committee has been set up to ensure that this night really does do the venue and its history proud. Facsimile West Runton Pavilion tickets are being printed so that people today can own a little
bit of history. Malcolm Birtwell of Rock the Lobster and Nigel Pearce presenter on Future Radio 107.8FM, along with Pam Kilgour are actively helping this project to success.
Nigel who presents the Monday Morning session live at 9.30am – 12noon on Future Radio 107.8FM says that this event should be the success it deserves, as this venue was very nearly always a must for anyone who was in the scene at the time. Motorhead, Hawkwind, The Rolling Stones, Slade,The Who, Souxsie and the Banshees, Sham 69, The Clash, The Stranglers and Slade were just some of the super-groups who played there when touring Britain.
It is planned to have a display of memorabilia and photographs of some of the artists who played there on show. If you have anything you'd like to share with others please bring it along on the night. The Pavilion was demolished in 1986 to make way for property development so this is a worthwhile and perhaps the best way to remember the Pavilion in its prime. Demand for tickets is increasing as there are only 250 available.
Tickets are available from Malcolm Birtwell preferably email malcypoos @msn.com or call 01263 821838, and they are priced at £2.50 each if collected, £3.25 each if posted and £4.50 on the night if there are any left. Among the entertainment will be Nigel Pearce compering the disco and local group U-Watt will be providing the live entertainment.
It is hoped food will be on sale based on what was available at the time 25 years ago - burgers, hot dogs and rolls, and all at reasonable prices too!!
All in all, it sounds like a night not to be missed, so make a date in your diary for Saturday 4 October starting at 7.30pm to "Let The Good Times Roll" and at a bargain rate!

Return of Saturday morning cinema with a family-friendly feel
A Disney classic, its latest blockbuster and a look behind the camera are all in store for The Atrium’s cinema offering for July.
In response to many requests, Saturday morning cinema is back with the classic musical Mary Poppins on Saturday 12 July and Disney’s blockbuster Frozen on Saturday 19 July, both at 11am. To keep the screenings family friendly, all tickets are £3 – with free admission for accompanying adults! Colouring-in and other film-related activities will also be on hand for before or even during the film to keep youngsters entertained.
Joseph Ballard, The Atrium’s director, said “Families are a huge part of North Walsham’s make-up, so we’ve responded by planning family-friendly morning screenings where anyone is welcome, but we can show we’ve thought about little ones coming along to the cinema too. With kids’ tickets at just £3, we want to encourage more people to come and share all we do here at The Atrium ahead of our exciting summer.”
The summer season has also been announced – with The Atrium’s first open day taking place on Saturday 9 August, promising free tasters and have-a-go activities, a two-week film club for teenagers and the popular summer club for 8-14s who this year will be exploring a werewolf-ridden retelling of Little Red Riding Hood. With something for all ages, you’re encouraged to check out the website or pick up a What’s On brochure so you don’t miss out!
For tickets and more information, The Atrium box office is open Wednesday – Friday afternoons, call 01692 400080 or book online at www.theatrium.org.uk. You can also buy tickets 7-days-a-week from the Showcase Gallery and Newsagents in the Market Place.
Funding shortfall for Norfolk's 111 service
Labour's Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for North Norfolk, Denise Burke, has expressed concern about a shortfall in funding for the Norfolk 111 service.
Nationally the Labour Party has expressed concerns about the service - which replaced NHS Direct - since it launched. Demand was initially too great, and cut-price contracts had left financial implications for those organisations running them.
Now the East of England Ambulance Service Trust (EEAST) has admitted that it is £2m over budget and could pull out of running the service because of a funding shortfall. It is calling on local Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) to help with the funding from 2014-15.
Denise Burke, from the North Norfolk Labour Party, said "Since the start of the 111 service Labour has said the NHS Direct replacement was flawed. This is yet another example of why.
It would be catastrophic if EEAST were to terminate their contract. GP surgeries and A&Es are already at bursting point and patients are facing long delays to see a doctor. These problems would be exasperated if something was to happen to the 24-hour telephone service.
The Health Minister Norman Lamb needs to get a grip of these issues happening on his doorstep." In association with www.northwalshamdeals.co.uk

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
As the branch has now been in existence for 14 years we know that some of the cats originally re-homed by us are entering their “golden years”. This reminds us that older cats do have behavioural changes and special needs in their latter years. Many of us involved in the branch have older cats and recognise some of the changes you are likely to see as your cat ages. Being aware of some of the challenges your cat may face means you can take appropriate action, to make their lives more comfortable and happy.
Most cat lovers will be aware that older cats are more likely to suffer from age related disorders like diabetes, renal, thyroid, and that they can, like humans, also become less mobile because of stiffness in their joints. All these conditions are treatable as I know from personal experience with my own cats. As your cat ages, and some lifestyle changes take place, you may also need to introduce changes in their diet. Fortunately there are many foods available specifically for the older cat and also for those needing a special diet. A cat may also require help with grooming as with age their coat may become matted because they find it difficult to groom themselves. Claws also get thicker and it is important to ensure they are clipped regularly to prevent them getting too long and curl into their pads.
One other major change you may see, (and we do get calls from people who are worried about this) is the dreadful noise some cats make in the latter years. This often occurs late and night and for no apparent reason. However, if you speak to your cat to reassure it, they will usually stop. Not all cats will make this noise but it is quite distinctive when they do. For instance, Barty, one of Stephanie’s cats, now 16 years old, does but his sister Amber does not. If they do it is important when you go on holiday to let their carer know as if not aware could think the cat is in pain. Fortunately for Barty, Stephanie had told her nephew before going

Find a Home for Arthur
"Poor Arthur came to us a while ago in a terrible state, he had been very badly neglected and had obviously had a hard life. He has had lots of TLC since being with us, of course, and he has blossomed into the dog we see today; a happy boy, who looks (AND MUST FEEL) much better. Arthur has also discovered the magical world of 'the ball'!
Arthur lives to play ball, he truly does, and it's wonderful to see him so energized, as he doesn't seem to tire of playing. He plays an excellent game of fetch and is very entertaining, bless him. Arthur will enjoy someone at home with him for at least half the day please, he will need at least one nice walk every day please and will need a secure, enclosed garden for extra fun and games with you (FETCH OF COURSE!). Arthur would like to be the only dog at home and is not a fan of cats. He has been neutered, vaccinated and microchipped and can be rehomed outside of the county, subject to a successful homecheck. The kennel staff say Arthur is very clean in his kennel and always waits to be taken out before toileting, what a good boy! Arthur so deserves a home of his own, where he will be loved and well looked after and where he can enjoy good games of fetch every day please." Animal Magic Supports The Cinnamon Trust
Members of Animal Magic Dog Club have been busy fundraising again, this time to provide a new, much needed market stall for The Cinnamon Trust.
The Trust is the only specialist national charity for people in their last years and their much loved, much needed companion animals. They recognise the importance of keeping owner and pet together and with a network of volunteers they provide invaluable support walking the dog for a housebound owner, fetching cat food or providing emergency pet care should the owner need hospital treatment to name but a few.
Come rain or shine, you’ll find volunteer Toni Deaves with her stall on market day around North Norfolk, raising much needed funds to allow the Trust to continue with it’s vital work in our area. A new stall was desperately needed to allow Toni to continue with her fundraising and recognising the importance of the work of the Trust, Animal Magic Dog Club stepped in to lend a helping hand.
Our Fairy Dog Mother, charity co-ordinator Zoe Hall also collected a huge amount of donated bric-a-brac for the stall so not only are they dry but they have quality items to sell too. To find out more about the work of The Cinnamon Trust, please visit their website www.cinnamon.org.uk

Annual General Meeting and Stakeholder Event
North Norfolk Clinical Commissioning Group Hosts Annual General Meeting and Stakeholder Event Norfolk Clinical Commissioning Group (NN CCG), the organisation responsible for buying NHS care for people living in North Norfolk, will be holding its Annual General Meeting and Stakeholder Conference on Tuesday, 15 July at Pinewoods Park Leisure, Upper Sheringham, from 9am to 2pm.
Patients and those representing voluntary groups and charities are invited to attend and participate in discussions around the increasing demands around unplanned or urgent care. This is a good opportunity for local residents to have their say in how local systems could work together to meet increasing urgent care needs in a rural location.
Dr Anoop Dhesi, who will be chairing the event said “The urgent care demands placed on GP practices and accident and emergency departments, 111 and out of hours are increasing year on year which creates challenges for commissioners who are responsible for planning and purchasing local health care services. We would welcome direct feedback around these challenges and ideas to help support our local system here in North Norfolk.”
The day starts at 9.00 am with presentations followed by informal discussion groups and feedback sessions. Places are limited so please do book a place via email on nnccg.contactus@nhs.net by telephone: 01263 738100 or by post: 1 Mill Close, Aylsham, Norfolk, N11 6LZ

Local supporters take to the skies in aid of Norfolk cancer charity
something I will cherish for many years to come, the rush of the free fall and the relaxing glide back down to earth once the parachute has opened. Not only was it the most exhilarating experience but it was also for a very good cause. Without the support of BIG C to cancer patients and their families, many of them would give up. That is why I decided to sign up to the sponsored jump. Big C and the guys at UK Parachuting arranged an awesome day with live music and a friendly atmosphere with everyone routing for each other. I would most definitely do it again in the future.
Over 60 Big C supporters took part in the BIG JUMP sponsored skydive event last month, raising in the region of £20,000 for Big C!
On Sunday 22 June Big C, Norfolk’s Cancer Charity held their first BIG JUMP Sponsored Skydive event that saw over 60 people take part in tandem skydives to raise money for the charity.
Around 60 jumpers decided to set aside their fears and jumped out of a plane for charity, (Big C were hoping for 50 people!), with around 400 friends and family coming along on the day to support them. After an initial safety briefing, the skydivers started to jump. There were emotional hugs and supportive smiles all round as many were jumping in memory or support of a loved one with cancer.
So far the total raised from the jump looks to be in the region of around £20,000, and sponsorship is still coming in. This will go a long way to support people affected by cancer in Norfolk and Waveney.
Big C’s Community Fundraising Manager, Diane said “It’s the first event like this we’ve done on this scale, so thank you to everyone
for their support of the jump, and great fundraising efforts. It was a really fun and happy day, a wonderful atmosphere, and so nice to see so many people come together and supporting the charity. They’ve all raised such a lot of money and we can’t be more thankful”
Kyle Hussey, age 26 from Caister-On-Sea took part in the event. He said “I was one of the first people to jump for Big C, I absolutely loved it. The experience is

Michaela Ranger also took part. She said “What an amazing experience it is to do a parachute jump, the feeling off pure elation as we sat at the edge of the plane.... Wow, what an experience.... One that I would like to repeat in the near future.... Makes it a lot more worthwhile to do it for a great charity like Big C....”
If you want to take part in a skydive for Big C, it’s still not too late! You can arrange your own skydive! Or take part in one of Big C’s other upcoming challenges including the Cambridge – Norwich Cycle ride in September. Get in touch with Big C to find out more.
North Walsham’s First World War Commemoration Weekend
Plans for the commemoration weekend at the Atrium on Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th September this year are now well in hand. Thanks to the generous donations received from both Sainsbury and Waitrose North Walsham stores and the support of many other local businesses an interesting and informative weekend will be available for all local residents and visitors to the town to enjoy at no cost to themselves.
Displays provided by many local organisations and the Living History Group can be viewed throughout the two days with a children’s question sheet for the younger visitors to complete.
In addition to free showings of the films War Horse and Blue Max in the Atrium theatre, a selection of short films including one featuring local drama students will be showing continuously in a side room. Music will be provided in the refreshment area where a ukulele band will play songs from the era.
An additional attraction for all visitors will be take place in the Atrium Annexe where the Norfolk Titanic Association will have an exhibition featuring May Howard, a Titanic survivor from North Walsham, and details of White Star ships used during World War One.

It’s about taking part this summer at The Atrium
The Atrium has released details about its summer programme where there are many opportunities to take part in activity, whether it’s acting, film or having a go with a free taster workshop. The summer also features the return of Saturday morning cinema and popular afternoon tea film screenings that begin in July.
Following on from the success of last year’s production of Zombie Babysitter, the popular summer club for 8-14s is back and will be exploring a werewolf-ridden retelling of Little Red Riding Hood, again written by the venue’s director Joseph Ballard, after workshopping ideas from the weekly drama club. The five days cost just £55 and runs from Tuesday 26 to Saturday 30 August, with performances on the Saturday afternoon. All abilities are welcome to join in, where making new friends, having fun, growing confidence and making theatre is all part of the week!
“Last year was lots of fun, learning lines, a song and being part of the big show. I’ve been looking forward to it since then and I can’t wait to do this year with Little Red and Curse of the Werewolf. Last year the story was
funny and it made us laugh” said Kayleigh Goodman, aged 9, who took part in the summer club last year.
For 13-19s, The Atrium is running a summer film school over the second and third week of August where participants can learn about screenwriting, producing and directing in the first week and then put it into practice the second week with the acting and filming. Participants can take part in both weeks for just £40 or one week for £22.
Joseph Ballard, The Atrium’s director, said
“Summer is the time to take part in our activity here at The Atrium. Aside from our successful work with young people which spans over three whole weeks of August, we’ve also got our Open Day when people of all ages can come along and have a go at different activities, from ballroom dancing to baby sensory movement, from being a theatre technician to photography. The Open Day will give those who’ve not visited us before, the chance to see what we’re about in this impressive venue.”
The Atrium’s first Open Day will take place on Saturday 9 August, 10am-4pm with free activities taking place all day from cookery to drama. The Open Day will also feature a Book Fair presented by the Showcase Gallery, which will have booksignings, authors and discounted books on sale. More information about the Open Day and the scheudle of free workshops can be found on the venue’s website.
With something for all ages, you’re encouraged to check out the website or pick up a new Summer What’s On brochure so you don’t miss out!
Enigma and the Secret World of Code Breaking
Enigma was one of the most powerful weapons of World War 2 - an apparently unbreakable code used to transmit German military intelligence. So how did a small group of mathematicians crack it?
Enjoy an epic tale of man against machine – including a wonderful opportunity to see a demonstration with an original World War 2 Enigma Machine. Dr James Grime, from Cambridge University, will illuminate the brilliant insights and innovative thinking of Alan Turing, best known for his role in breaking the Enigma, as well as presenting the fascinating history and mathematics of codes and code breaking from ancient Greece to the present day.

A renowned public speaker on codes and code breaking, Dr Grimes will give a talk and demonstration (suitable for both adults and children) on Saturday 20 September as part of the 1940s weekend, at 11am and 2pm at Sheringham High School. Tickets are £5 and can be purchased from the carnival caravan or by phoning Paula Popham on 01263 823546.

Weather summary and forecast from Ned Nimbus
As expected the past three months gave us weather very much in line to what we would expect. Temperatures, often tempered by a wind off the sea, were about average and rainfall, unless you caught a heavy shower, was if anything slightly below average. Pressure also held up well dampening down any major shower activity. As we leave June and enter July it looks like, for a time anyway, the weather will become less settled. However after 5 July more settled and warmer conditions should return but be prepared for Atlantic troughs and unsettled weather over the continent to threaten rain and showers now and again .August is likely to produce more in the way of rain and showers and some decidedly colder days with winds off the sea. September will see an improvement - however rain/showers cannot be ruled out but on a much lesser scale to what we will have seen in August. The forecast, as usual, carries a ± of five days. So now our ranges of giftware, and home décor items can be viewed and purchased in store. At Groveland Farm Shop the Butchery is the heart of the business
As well as being the larder for meals served in the restaurant, Groveland butchers, with the help of chef, also prepare an ever increasing array or products which are available in the deli including cooked hams, ham hock and haslets as well as pies and quiches, all cooked on site.
Groveland Farm Shop prides itself in supporting local producers and farmers, and when the beef is sourced from a Roughton Farm – they really do mean local. To improve the flavour the dry aged beef is hung for 28 days before being broken down by skilled butchers and presented for sale.
Steve Taylor, who has over 25 years of experience in all aspects of the retail meat trade, together with Michael who served his apprenticeship at Groveland Farm Shop, are friendly, hard working Butchers. They are on hand to help and happy to offer advice about the cuts on display and take any special requests you may have.
For a taste of Norfolk try buying from Groveland Butchers. As well as local beef they also stock pork from Blythburgh Farms where the pigs are truly free range, allowed to roam and grow naturally ensuring the pigs are happy and enhancing the taste of the meat. Other meats also locally sourced include free range turkeys, game (when in season) and poultry.
Why not pop in and have a chat with Steve and Michael, and maybe try something new for dinner.

Inner Wheel Club of North Walsham
The June meeting of the Club was held on Monday 9 June at the home of the Club Secretary, Gillian Owles. The President welcomed members and the speaker and thanked Gillian for her hospitality at the end of the meeting.
We were fortunate to have the Rev. Nigel Patterson as guest speaker. He gave a slide presentation of his pilgrimage along the route in Northern Spain known as the Camino de Santiago. This is a walkway used by all kind of religious travellers for more than 2,000 years. It starts at Roneesvalles and ends at the Church at Santiago, where the apostle James the Greater is said to be buried. This puts it with Rome and Jerusalem as one of Christendom’s
great pilgrim destinations.
The route is 550 miles long and it took Nigel 35 days to complete. He miraculously finished with only one blister, but some slightly aching limbs.
The most fascinating thing for Nigel was meeting so many interesting people on the way. People from all over the world, with different reasons for travelling along the route. Some walked, some cycled and some rode horses. There were also ‘pampered pilgrims’ who had their luggage transported from hotel to hotel, whilst they themselves walked. Most people stayed at hostels of varying degrees of comfort, or discomfort, built by local monarchs and clergy over the centuries.
By the 12th and 13th Centuries half a million pilgrims made the journey each year. In the 17th century Louis XIV of France forbade his

subject to go to Santiago in an effort to stop trade with Spain. In spite of this, it was never abandoned and now over 200,000 pilgrims travel along this famous track each year. The talk was followed by refreshments and a short Club meeting. Stella Hunter, President
Our Reception and Nursery children had an exciting day of pirate activities last month. Together with parents they managed to create a pirate ship to sail on the high seas, fished for deep sea creatures to put on the Captain’s dinner table and dug in the sand for pirate treasure. They made bandanas to protect them from the sun’s rays and made pirate jewellery to use for bartering with other buccaneers!
Great fun was had by all as they helped to make a picnic suitable for bloodthirsty pirates, such as blood jelly, sailing sandwiches, tropical fruit salad and ship’s biscuits which they had cooked to last for a voyage!
We welcome visitors, just call ahead to arrange a suitable time and we would love to see you!

Norman Lamb praised for work on joined-up health care
North Norfolk Member of Parliament, Norman Lamb has won praise for his work on joined-up health care. The Health Service Journal - a leading newspaper for health professionals - placed Mr Lamb second in its top 50 list of people working to improve health care by integrating services.
The HSJ said it was 'impossible to over-state' Mr Lamb's influence on integration.
Integration is an important way of improving health care for patients by making sure those who provide care work closely together.
Norman Lamb is Care Services minister in the Coalition Government. The HSJ describes him as the 'architect of the government's planned better care fund' which will invest £3.8 billion in improving care.

Londoner Sarah McMenemy spent her childhood holidays in North Norfolk and all the charm and confidence of her style is captured in views along the North Norfolk coast including Cromer, Sheringham, Blakeney and Mundesley. Dear Margaret,
I am a local business owner at the Jewellers and Pawnbrokers in North Walsham. I also compete as a Longbow Archer and I am Norfolk Champion at several distances.
I have lost the land I practice archery on and I am desperate to find someone that would have a strip of land, 15 to 20 yards wide by between 120 to 220 yards long of grass or meadow.
I also have two archery targets that I would need to store - perhaps in a barn or out house.

eastlaw saw off competition from five larger local authority legal teams at the ceremony which took place in London before almost 1,000 people last month.
The eleventh annual awards were presented by comedian Hugh Dennis, the star of popular BBC sit-com ‘Outnumbered’.
The award recognises and rewards a council legal department which ‘demonstrates exceptional value for money’ for the council ‘through their contribution and innovation’.
The concept of eastlaw was developed by NNDC’s legal team itself, to deliver services both in-house and on behalf of external clients. Aiming to combine the best aspects of public sector practice with the efficiency and dynamism of the private sector, eastlaw has been particularly successful in acting as the legal arm of NNDC’s drive to bring empty homes back into use, in setting up the coastshare group to help charities and other not-for-profit organisations, and in greatly exceeding the income target for its first year of operation.
Cllr Tom FitzPatrick, NNDC Leader, said “I am delighted to see eastlaw be crowned the best Legal Services team in the UK. The team work tirelessly to deliver value for money services with professionalism and innovation and thoroughly deserve the award.
“eastlaw shows how the law can be used imaginatively for the benefit of the Council and local community. They provide a first class legal service of which I am immensely proud”
Emma Duncan, Head of Legal Services, said “We faced stiff competition from the other exceptional and larger five teams, so to be recognised as the best in the country is an outstanding achievement and the team is very proud to have achieved such a prestigious accolade.”

Sainsbury’s North Walsham raises awareness of local support for carers in North Norfolk
The team at Sainsbury’s North Walsham invited local carers’ groups into store last month as part of their support for Carers Week. A representative from The Academy visited the store on 13 June to raise awareness of the support available to carers in North Norfolk and inform people about their website www.bereadyforit.org.uk
Sue Spooner from the Academy who visited Sainsbury’s North Walsham said “Carers Week gives us the chance to tell the wider community about our work in improving end of life care and it was great to team up with Sainsbury’s to have the opportunity to speak to many customers throughout the day”.
Sainsbury’s partnership with Carers UK began in December 2010. For Carers Week this year, the charity are running ‘Carers Week Quest’, with the aim of reaching out to the thousands of carers missing out on support and services in
the UK. During Carers Week, which took place between 9 -15 June, as part of Sainsbury’s partnership with UK National Charity ‘Carers UK’, hundreds of awareness sessions took place in Sainsbury’s stores nationwide. Sainsbury’s Deputy Store Manager, Celia Chapman added “It’s important that we make our customers aware of the great services that are available for carers. We’re proud to be a supporter of Carers Week and we hope the sessions help some of our customers, who are carers use these services”.
Heléna Herklots, Chief Executive of Carers UK, said “Thank you to all those Sainsbury’s stores which were amongst hundreds of organisations across the country running Carers Week events to support the nations’ carers. Many people don’t realise that help may be available if they are caring for an older or disabled loved one and during Carers Week this year we were able to reach out to
Building Excellence award wins for North Norfolk District Council
North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) scooped an award at the 2014 East Anglia Local Authority Building Control (LABC) Building Excellence awards held at St Andrew’s Hall, Norwich on 13 June.
The LABC Building Excellence Awards recognise the importance of Building Control in England and Wales in creating safe, accessible and sustainable buildings that are constructed to high standards. The awards, for which there are 12 categories, are a celebration of the best projects in the region (including Suffolk, Cambridgeshire, Essex and Norfolk) for quality and compliance with building regulations.
The win this year was in the category of ‘Best customer LABC Partnership with a Local Authority Building Control Team’ – a prestigious category of award as it truly recognises the work of the council with its customers to deliver successful projects – a real team effort between a private company and the public sector. In this case, NNDC’s partner architect was SMG Chartered Architects from Sheringham. The award was accepted by Paul Ericksen of SMG with Daniel Theobald of NNDC’s Building Control department.
NNDC Building Control team and SMG have been involved in successfully delivering housing developments in Dereham, Bradwell, Poringland and Sprowston in Norwich, as well as the site now in progress in Roughton Road, Cromer. Other projects where NNDC and SMG have collaborated include the Sheringham Lighthouse church project on Cromer Road, and works to Paston College in North Walsham, together with many smaller scale domestic new-build projects, extensions and alterations.
NNDC Cabinet Member for Planning, Benjie Cabbell Manners, said “I’d like to congratulate all those involved in achieving this fantastic award. I believe the success that NNDC has achieved at the LABC Building Excellence awards both this year and in the past is indicative of the high standards and quality here in North Norfolk.
“I am very proud of what NNDC, architects, builders and local people have achieved to enhance our built environment”.
The award will be entered in the forthcoming national Building Excellence awards that will be held in London in the autumn.

North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb has welcomed efforts to improve the local ambulance service after a briefing from service managers. Mr Lamb visited the headquarters of East Anglian Ambulance Service (EAAST) last month. He met with control room staff and with the new Chief Executive of EAAST, Dr Anthony Marsh.
1 Cornish Way Business Park North Walsham Norfolk NR28 0FE
“Again and again over the last few years I have heard complaints from North Norfolk residents about slow ambulance response times. Funding for the service has increased every year under the Coalition Government and I have pressed hard for service managers to get to grips with the
Mr Lamb, who is also Care Services Minister in the coalition government, has pledged to work with service managers to ensure that the investment leads to real improvements in the service for local people.
Dr Marsh commented “I was very pleased that the Minister has taken the time to visit the Trust and our staff again to learn more about the improvements in the ambulance service. It was a pleasure to be able to update the Minister on our progress; the first of the 400 student paramedics we are recruiting joined the frontline this week to start treating patients, there are 147 new emergency ambulances already on the road and we are continuing to get to patients more quickly in Norfolk. We are starting to see the results of the determination of staff to succeed and provide the type of service that we all want to see. We are absolutely focused on delivering an improved service to patients and I look forward to continuing to support our staff to achieve the improvements.”
News from North Walsham Town Council
The Town Council is looking for two or three volunteers to sit on its new Media and Information Committee in an advisory capacity. Although full Terms of Reference have yet to be defined, it is envisaged that the new Committee's responsibilities will include advising the Town Council on its web presence, use of social media and email, and use of information technology, drafting and recommending policies covering these important areas, and supporting and advising the Council's volunteer-staffed Information Office. Anyone interested in this opportunity to contribute to how the Town Council works should contact the Town Clerk. No experience is necessary, but a willingness to attend occasional meetings and be an active contributor is essential. Depending on the response, it may be necessary to arrange interviews with candidates. Please write to Nick Clancy (Town Clerk) or email clerk@northwalsham-town.co.uk
Late last year, the Town Council applied for two signs through Norfolk County Council’s Parish Partnership Grant scheme. The bid was partially successful, leading to agreement that a height activated sign will be placed on the approach to Cromer Road Bridge. This move will hopefully help to prevent further damage to the bridge caused by over-height vehicles. The sign will be located in the vicinity of Waitrose, leaving drivers of these vehicles with an escape route before the bridge. Although the bid for a speed-activated sign was rejected as the proposed locations did not meet the County Council’s criteria for such signs, the Town Council was subsequently offered an alternative moveable sign, known as SAM2. These are intended to be moved every four weeks. County Road Safety officers advised the Town Council that with two signs a town the size of North Walsham could easily cover any hotspots over the course of a few months, and the Council will therefore be proceeding

with a request for two signs. Councillors will be proposing stretches of road that they think are in need of action on speeding, and we will be working with the Police and local residents to put a comprehensive list of possible sites together for assessment. Should any residents wish to suggest a particular stretch of road, please contact the Town Clerk on 01692-404114 or email clerk@northwalsham-town.co.uk Work on both of these projects will be progressing over the next few months.

North Walsham Probus Club
Social Choices was the subject of Dr Ben McQuillan’s presentation to the Club last month.
The example given was simply a couple choosing a bottle of wine, a fairly familiar situation, but I suspect that few realized how complex it may become. Two people, given three alternatives, can prove more difficult than two people restricted to two choices. A simple solution can be to agree to eliminate one of the choices.
Decisions may be through a group, for examples clubs, societies or even families.
A second means may be through referendum, or by alternative preferences, The difficulty in this case is finding an order of preference. An example may be proportional representation, involving the transferable vote.
A third situation, which is perhaps more common than many people may realize, is agenda manipulation. This occurs where the group chairperson may influence the group by the manner in which the agenda is set, or

leads the discussion.
One member raised the question of democracy and the EU. This led to the conclusion that a populist democracy is not always an ideal solution. However, it is accepted that a liberal democracy does provide a bulwark against tyranny.
Perhaps it was not surprising that such an ostensibly simple task as choosing a bottle of wine could provoke so many controversial questions.

With up to 30% off our packages, there is no reason not to! According to the latest research in hair removal women shave 11,540 times in their lifetime and men spend 3000 hours on their shaving routine. Treatment is very cost effective when compared to other methods of hair removal. It provides long-term hair reduction so there is no need to keep on having regular treatments. Shaving, waxing and depilatory creams are all temporary methods that must be repeated on a regular basis. These may be cheaper initially but prove costly over the long term as costs add up.

Electrolysis can be time-consuming and is usually limited to small areas, because each hair is treated individually. Laser hair removal is non-invasive, and safely removes unwanted body hair without damaging the delicate pores and structures of the skin. Facial and bikini areas are usually completed in less than 10 minutes; legs and larger areas can take longer. The same area would require more than 40 hours of needle Electrolysis.
Why use us for laser hair removal?
Customised treatments - we have many years experience and a range of hair removal lasers and IPL. You will be treated with the machine that would provide best results for your unique requirements.
Best lasers - with deregulation of lasers the market has been flooded with cheap devices. Some lasers have been tested by consulting room and found to be very dangerous as there is no standardization of laser
