Prom party for pre-school

Issue 452 9th August 2014

Covering North Walsham, Aylsham and surrounding villages in association with the Cromer Times and Sheringham Independent

On Friday 18 July, Town Tots in North Walsham held an end of term prom for all the children who attend the pre-school.

The Town Tots team were keen to celebrate the end of the school year in a special way so came up with the idea of a prom evening for both staff and children, reflecting the popularity of high-school proms. All staff and children who attended dressed up for the occasion in party dresses and suits. The prom, which was held outside in a marquee, included a children’s disco and the Town Tots even chose their own prom King and Queen.

Jane Medler, the Town Tots pre-school leader said “It was lovely to see so many of the children take part in the prom and make our end of term a special time. We were able to say goodbye to the children who are leaving us with a really happy event.”

Town Tots pre-school is part of The Benjamin Foundation and situated on the North Walsham Junior School site. It opens Monday to Friday, 9am to 3pm during term time and offers care for children from two to five years old. Town Tots offers funded places for eligible two year olds and all three year olds, subject to availability of places.

Big C Charity worker found £1,000 whilst sifting through donated items

Big C charity worker Wendy Balicki couldn’t believe it when she found money amounting to £1,000 in donations she was sorting through, at the charity’s furniture and distribution centre in Wymondham. “It caused quite a bit of excitement at the time,” says Wendy, “though we are very mindful that the money may have been put there as an oversight.

Sometimes people do donate to the charity in different ways but it would really reassure us to know that someone meant to do this and that it wasn’t just an oversight on their part.

Nikki Morris, deputy CEO at Big C charity, is appealing for the donor to make contact with the charity. Nikki, says, ‘It could be that the person intentionally donated this amount of money to the charity, but Big C really want to make certain that this was the case. It concerns us as a charity that this may have been an unintentional act and that the person may have been unaware that the money was there. If this was the case then we would be more than happy to return the money to its rightful owner’.

Big C has a policy in place which covers such eventualities such as this and means that it will appeal for the owner to come forward to state their intention and have the opportunity to claim the money back. Nikki states that the procedure is that if no one comes forward within 30 days of the date of publicity then Big C deems that the intention was to donate the money. “We realise that from time to time items, including cash, will be donated to the charity by mistake. When this happens Big C will do everything in its power to reunite the item or cash with its owner”.

Nikki adds, “If the money was intended as a donation then that is lovely, but this is a lot of money and may have been put away for other reasons and then forgotten.”

K C

The £1,000 was discovered in mid-June. For anyone who donated items in the time before this and believes that the cash is theirs, if they could contact Big C on 01603 619900 and clarify their intentions with Nikki Morris.

The NCS Factor

Thirteen young people from the NCS scheme ran and organised a charity talent show entitled 'The NCS Factor' on the evening of Friday 25 July.

The young people had planned this event for two weeks and also organised an afternoon outside The Forum in Norwich to raise money and awareness for Sporting Light Appeal.

There were some fantastic acts and fabulous judges.

Gabbi Ryan, Miss Teen Norfolk 2014, was able to attend this evening as part of her work towards Miss Teen Great Britain. Emma Fletcher, Sporting Light Appeal/Charity Fund-raising Officer, was also able to attend and said how pleased she was this final evening was so successful. Joe, one of NCS leaders, expressed his thanks for being asked to be on the judging panel.

Aaron Curtis, an NCS leader who also works at Davenports Magic Kingdom in North Walsham, was placed 1st with his magically magic skills, much to the delight of Mr Davenport, we are sure.

Other very talented acts included Bradley, whose voice was sensational and Kate Tebble whose voice seemed to come out of nowhere leaving the audience totally amazed. When asked how he felt about his daughter’s performance Kate’s dad said 'I am extremely proud of my daughter.'

It was a very successful evening and from a £0 budget, over £300 was raised for this charity to help disadvantaged people with disabilities. The young people of NCS would like to thank all the local businesses within the city centre of Norwich who donated raffle prizes including The Television and Movie Store, Jarrolds, Starbucks, Costa, Nando's, Hollywood Bowl, Quasar, That's Enterainment, Bells Italia, Abstract Sprock, Waffle House and also everybody who attended the evening to support the charity. ‘We hope that this evening will be remembered'.

Happisburgh Lifeboat Station

Happisburgh RNLI Lifeboat Station volunteers were called into action on 18th July to a small local fishing boat missing at sea off Happisburgh.

Senior Helmsman, Tim Grimmer, had seen the fishing boat, Sea Hawk, launch at approx 7am into heavy seas. Tim was contacted by a relative of the fishermen when he had lost sight of the boat. Tim alerted Humber Coastguard and the Station pagers were set off at 9.50am. At 9.58am Douglas Paley was launched into heavy seas with Tim Grimmer at the helm and a crew of Charlotte Siely and Sean Ferguson.

A search was started from the beach to ½ mile off from Cart Gap towards Sea Palling. The crew were south of Sea Palling and thinking of turning north, to carry out a second line of search, when they saw the boat off Waxham at 10.15am. They went alongside to give aid.

Happisburgh Lifeboat then started to escort Sea

Hawk back towards Cart Cap, when they were informed that, as the tide was in, it would not be possible to recover the fishing boat safely. Therefore, the boat was escorted to Sea Palling, arriving at 10.40am to anchor in the lea of the reefs and to wait for low water to try and recover at Cart Gap. The Lifeboat made sure the boat was safe and that the crew had been given advice, before leaving at 11am to return to Station.

At 11.15am Douglas Paley was recovered by net, due to the sea conditions - the Lifeboat was back on service at 11:30am.

Tim Grimmer would like to remind all people who go to sea, to contact the Coastguard to inform them where they are going and when they are returning, also to let others know what their plans are, to wear lifejacket and have VHF radios to call for help if needed. The RNLI is there to save lives at sea but can only

Give before you go

With the school holidays here, people are being asked to give blood before they go away, especially if they have the blood groups B Rh negative and O Rh negative.

NHS Blood and Transplant is reminding people to donate ahead of their breaks to help maintain stocks for hospital patients over the summer. Blood stocks tend to fall at this time of year as people get distracted by holidays and the warmer weather. Although overall blood use within the NHS has reduced, thanks to improvements in clinical and surgical practices, hospitals and patients still rely on more than 7,000 people attending a donation session every day across England and North Wales. B Rh negative blood is in demand because certain ethnic groups are more prone to particular diseases that require blood, such as sickle cell anaemia and thalassemia and a higher proportion of these ethnic groups are Group B Rh. Group B Rh negative blood can be given to B negative or B positive patients. Donors with blood group O Rh negative are typically known as the “universal donor” as their blood can be given to patients with a different blood group. This can prove vital in an emergency situation when there may not be time for an immediate blood grouping test to be carried out.

do this if people are able to call them to ask for assistance.

Despite the strong advice of the Lifeboat to leave it until after 4.30pm to attempt to return to Cart Gap, the crew of Sea Hawk decided to return at 2.30pm when the tide was still high with large breakers. As a result of this the crew were stood in chest high water with breakers crashing over their boat which caused it to capsize. Luckily no one was injured - there could have been a much more serious outcome had the boat rolled onto the fishermen.

undergoing surgery and receiving treatment for cancer and blood diseases, and women haemorrhaging in childbirth rely on blood donors. You can find out whether we’ve got a session coming up in your area on www.blood.co.uk and book an appointment online to donate.

You can also register to become a donor on our website. Anyone aged between 17 - 65, weighing more than 50 kg (7 stone 12lbs) and in general good health could potentially start saving lives by becoming a blood donor. There is no upper age limit for donors who have donated in the last two years.

Derek Carr, Lead Donor Relations Manager for Anglia, said: “We know people are busy and especially in the summer but we’re asking that they remember those hospital patients who need blood to save or improve their lives. We’re asking our donors to please make an appointment to donate before they go away.

“If you’ve never given blood before, why not make this summer the time you join our donors and make a difference to others? Each blood donation can potentially save up to three lives.” Patients in need of blood in accident and emergency situations, patients

Afternoon Teas

The perfect way to spend an English summer afternoon and we’re delighted to be working once more with About with Friends this year to provide wonderful afternoon teas every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 2.30 – 4.30pm.

We do try to cater for all dietary requirements, even the less common, and we are finding that gluten-free diets are a regular occurrence for us now, even for afternoon teas. We make a real effort to try to accommodate everyone and most of our a la carte is now gluten free, although desserts are always a real challenge. Dan, one of our CdPs, makes the most gorgeous cheesecakes and he enlisted the help of Ann Graveling to come up with a gluten-free base that is probably nicer than the traditional biscuit base. Do come up for dinner and give it a try! As always 01263512412 to book.

Gluten free White Chocolate & Raspberry Swirl Cheesecake

THE BASE 25g Gluten free porridge oats 40g mixed pumpkin, sunflower and flax seeds 155g gluten free plain flour 50g soft brown sugar Pinch of salt 1 tbsp gluten free baking powder

2tbsp margerine (dairy free if desired) 2tbsp milk (cow, soya or rice)

1. Preheat oven to 200C/gas 6. Line two baking trays with parchment paper 2. Put the porridge and mixed seeds into a food processor and whizz until fine 3. Add the flour, sugar, salt, baking powder and margarine and whizz until well mixed; add the milk and whizz again until the mixture starts to come together. Don’t worry if it looks a little dry. Remove from processor and knead on a well floured board (If the mixture is really too dry, add more milk, but don’t over-wet it.) 4. Roll out to about 3mm (1/8 inch) thick and cut into rounds. Lift carefully onto a baking tray using a spatula and prick with a fork; bake for about 15 minutes until lightly New golden.

2. Add sugar to soft cheese and beat until soft 3. Melt chocolate slowly over heat, make sure it doesn’t burn, add to soft cheese and sugar, turn with a wooden spoon 4. Add three sheets gelatine to 50ml of boiling water and beat with a fork until completely dissolved, then add to mix 5. Spoon cheesecake mix in lined tin, then fork in raspberry coulis to make nice swirl 6. Place cheesecake back into freezer for two hours to set

North Norfolk Youth HUBS – SLAM night

The North Norfolk Youth HUBS are local Youth Projects run by the charity MAP that meet every two weeks in Sheringham, Mundesley, Stalham and Cromer. These Hubs are for the enjoyment of local 13-19 year olds and aim to offer opportunities, information, advice and positive activities as well as engaging in community projects to help show local young people in the positive light they deserve.

To celebrate one year of the Youth HUBs we have decided to join force with The Garage (Music and Arts Centre) in Norwich and the Cromer Community Centre to put on a talent display organised and performed by local youth. It will be North Norfolk’s first SLAM night.

This is an appeal to any (13-19 year old) local bands, performers, singers, dancers or any talented young people to contact the Youth HUBs to discuss performing at the SLAM night on 5 September in Cromer. We can help with equipment and even travel too if necessary. You can offer to perform as one of the main acts or just come along and join the scratch round where anyone can stand up and have 5 minutes to perform. The winner of this round will receive a prize of music vouchers provided by the Community Centre - all performers will receive tickets to the Garage’s next SLAM night in Norwich.

Funding Home Care – Part 2

National Guidance on Charging for Home Care Anna Lloyd – Legal Executive with Hayes + Storr There are two pieces of guidance on charging for home care. The first on ‘fairer charging’ sets out a framework for charging. This is supplemented by the second piece of guidance on ‘fairer contributions’. Fairer charging sets out a framework for

calculating the charges. The charges should not reduce the person’s income to less than the value of income support plus 25% and should not take earned income into account.

People’s assets (savings and capital) can be taken into account. The amount of capital disregarded should not be lower than the national guidelines prescribed for charging for residential care. The upper limit for residential care charging is £23,250. If you have more than this the Local Authority (“LA”) may ask you to pay the full cost for care. Under residential charging rules, capital of between £14,250 and £23,250 will be assessed on the basis of an assumed (or “tariff”) income. For every £250 (or part of £250) of capital you have over £14,250, you will be assessed as though you have an extra £1 per week of income. This assumes a return of £52 per annum on an investment of £250, i.e. of more than 20%, which is quite clearly unachievable.

Unlike residential care funding, the person’s home is not taken into account when calculating home care charges. This is because the home is needed for the person to live in. Capital earmarked for a specific item can be disregarded but this needs to be declared and the reason explained. Spouses’ /partners’ income and assets are not normally taken into account either. The situation is slightly different where assets are held jointly.

The philosophy behind this is one of ‘personalisation’ to enable people to receive the support they choose and to enable people to spend their budget as they think best. The result of this well-intentioned thinking is that it is not very clearly defined and so makes it difficult to challenge a personal budget set by the LA which is too low. There have been a number of cases brought to Court to challenge insufficient home care provision where the LA has set too high or tight ‘eligibility criteria’ resulting in insufficient care or payment for care. “This article aims to supply general information, but it is not intended to constitute advice. Every effort is made to ensure that the law referred to is correct at the date of publication and to avoid any statement which may mislead. However no duty of care is assumed to any person and no liability is accepted for any omission or inaccuracy. Always seek our specific advice.”

If you require advice on this matter please contact Anna at our North Walsham office on 01692 503081 or at our Sheringham office on 01263 825959 or email law@hayes-storr.com. You can make an appointment to see Anna at our legal surgery held at Brentnall House on Vicarage Street, North Walsham on Thursday mornings.

Council wants you on its team!

Legal Surgeries held in North Walsham on Thursday mornings and in Mundesley on Tuesday Mornings from 9am-12pm. Please contact us for further informaƟon.

Please contact:

‘Personal budgets’ are designed to allow people to spend an allocated budget on care and support, as they wish, rather than being allocated a given number of hours of care by the LA. The ‘fairer contributions’ system attempts to sort out the basis of charging where there is no fixed number of hours of care. The charge is calculated on a percentage basis according to income and capital.

North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) is appealing for north Norfolk based sports coaches and activity instructors to join its coaching register. Following the announcement that the Council has received over £200,000 of National Lottery funding from Sport England’s Community Sport Activation Fund, it is encouraging people to join its coaching register to help deliver forthcoming sports projects to communities throughout north Norfolk.

The Council is committed to increasing its sports provision for people who currently have difficulty in finding local sports and exercise facilities and will be offering a selection of non-traditional activities such as martial arts, dodgeball and street dance.

Councillor Glyn Williams, NNDC’s Cabinet Member for Leisure and Cultural Services said, “The funding we have received to help develop our sports provision across the district is great news, and now we are keen to sign up local coaches and instructors to help us deliver some exciting projects.

“If you are an experienced coach or sports activity instructor with a desire to work within your local community, we’d love to hear from you.”

NNDC is also seeking to add to its pool of volunteers and is keen to hear from anyone who is interested in gaining experience in the sports and leisure industry.

Councillor Glyn Williams added “Volunteering in sport is extremely rewarding and you do not need previous experience to take part. It’s a great opportunity to gain valuable skills, meet new people and help others. All that’s required is lots of enthusiasm!”

For more information about how to become a volunteer or to join the coaching register, please contact NNDC’s Community Sports Manager, Colin Brown on 07917834960 or email olin.brown@ north-norfolk.gov.uk or see www.northnorfolk.org/jobs

Felbrigg Hall receives major accolade and bids farewell to an era

Coinciding with the retirement of the current General Manager of the Felbrigg Hall and Sheringham Park Estates and of the Roman Camp at West Runton, Felbrigg Hall has been awarded a Certificate of Excellence by TripAdvisor, one of the Internet’s major worldwide sources of information for tourists. Currently Felbrigg is placed at number 8 on the list of attractions in Norwich and surrounding area (113 in total). In reviews of Felbrigg 230 out of 249 reviewers awarded four or five stars. Only one reviewer gave it one star. Many reviewers commented strongly on the magnificent walled garden.

This walled garden was the scene in late July for a wonderful garden party on a beautiful English summer evening to allow the staff, and the dedicated volunteers from the Hall, the shops and gardens of all three sites and the volunteer gardeners to bid farewell to the retiring General Manager, Ray Sandham who has been in charge here since 2001.

Ray has had a varied career from a foreman baker after leaving school to Estate Manager at Bodelwyddan Castle after taking a year off to study at horticultural college. He joined the National Trust in 1999 at Claydon House in Bucks where over two years he helped increase visitor numbers by 50%.

In November 2001, at his request, he transferred to the Felbrigg role as Property Manager (subsequently upgraded by the NT to General Manager). When he transferred visitor numbers per year amounted to 49,995 whereas last season we welcomed 102,230 – an increase of 204% and we are currently on target to beat that figure this season.

This is entirely due to Ray’s unique personal vision for the properties under his control, his personal skills in motivating the full-time staff and the many volunteers who devote their time to Felbrigg Hall, its shops ( and those at the other sites) and the beautiful gardens at all three sites Ray will be greatly missed by everyone from the staff to the hundreds of volunteers but his vision for the NT properties in the Cromer area will live on with the appointment of Eleanor Akinlade who has worked with Ray for four years as House Manager at Felbrigg. Ella shares his vision for the continued improvement of our local properties and will be a worthy and popular successor.

EVLT- endovenous laser therapy - is a relatively new outpatient treatment that can be performed under local anaesthesia in less than an hour. It has been endorsed by NICE as the treatment of choice for varicose veins.

Varicose veins occur when the vein is not functioning properly to return blood from the lower leg to the heart. Each vein has a series of valves that open to allow the flow of blood to the heart, and close to prevent backflow (otherwise known as “reflux”) of blood back into the foot. The walls and valves of veins are thin and elastic, and can stretch due to a variety of conditions including pregnancy, heredity injuries, inflammation and age.

Approximately half of the population has some form of venous disease, and varicose veins affect about one out of two people age 50 and older, and 15-25% of all adults.

Previously, treatment of painful, swollen varicose veins required a surgical procedure called vein stripping, where the vein was completely removed from the leg. It had a prolonged recovery period and veins could come back due to scar tissue.

The new laser treats the source of the problem, which then causes the varicose vein in the lower leg to shrink and disappear.

Endovenous laser therapy involves the insertion of an ultrasound-guided laser fibre directly into the faulty vein. Laser energy heats the vein from within, causing it to shrink, collapse and seal shut. Patients experience minimal discomfort, and they can return to normal activities the same day. Because there are many veins in the leg, the blood that would have flowed through the closed vein simply flows through other healthy veins after the laser therapy.

Coltishall Clinic also offers sclerotherapy and lasers to treat leftover spider veins.

SERV Norfolk to receive a year’s worth of support from Sainsbury’s North Walsham

Sainsbury’s North Walsham has announced that SERV Norfolk will receive a year’s worth of fundraising and awareness support. SERV Norfolk, who support our local hospitals by providing volunteers on a dedicated fleet of motor bikes giving night time transportation of blood products and other vital emergency supplies, will be the new Local Charity for the North Walsham store.

To celebrate the announcement, a volunteer representative from SERV Norfolk, Danny Willcox, brought an emergency bike to the store and was met by Dave Banks who works in the store and is also a volunteer controller for the charity. The store team will also be fundraising for the new charity by holding regular second hand book stalls and other events during the year.

The retailer’s Local Charity scheme is now in its sixth year and gives customers the chance to vote for their favourite local charity to be considered to receive a year’s worth of support

from their Sainsbury’s store. The scheme has raised over £6 million to support local charities since 2009.

The North Walsham store has had great success in supporting previous local charities and last year raised £2692 for Millfield Pre-School in the town. The Pre-School will be using the money towards IT improvements and the creation of a new area of garden for the children.

Customers had a huge say in this year’s announcement and voted in-store and online between 28 May and 8 June. The store colleagues then decided SERV Norfolk were the best charity for them to work with to make a real difference.

Danny Willcox from SERV Norfolk said “We know the success that the Local Charity partnership has bought to many wonderful charities in North Walsham so when we received the recent phone call to tell us the news, we were thrilled. We hope the

partnership will help raise awareness of our great cause to the store’s customers and local community and will help us continue to develop the important service we provide to the community”.

Sainsbury’s North Walsham new Store Manager, Mr Dave Bassett said “We’ve had a great response from our customers this year, both through in-store and online votes. We’re delighted to have chosen a charity which touched many of our colleagues’ hearts. We will now be working closely with the charity to ensure they really benefit from being our Local Charity for the next 12 months”.

Paston students excel at Cambridge Chemistry Challenge 2014

The Cambridge Challenge is a competition run by Cambridge University aimed at really gifted chemists seeking to inspire the next generation of scientists. This year, eight Paston Sixth Form College students entered the competition, of whom four won copper awards, and four silver, putting them all in the top 25% of the students who entered. All the students involved will have been selected by their schools and colleges for their high ability in

chemistry in the first place. Each month, a set of five mind-bending chemistry problems are set each one leading to a more difficult one with the prize being a place on the Honours board. This year’s test asked the students to determine the radius of a calcium atom, use energy changes in a novel situation and apply concepts in the chemistry of some unusual carbon containing compounds. The whole experience is designed by the organisers to develop “intellectual resilience” and to encourage the students to “keep going in the face of difficulty”, qualities highly prized by top Universities like Cambridge and Oxford. The test is so difficult that scoring any marks at all is a real achievement. The successful students were: Keiran Corbett....................Silver Edward Deane ....................Copper Callum Hamilton-Emery....Silver Jenna Hatch ........................Silver Nick Hewetson...................Copper Daniel Johnson...................Copper Ross Knapman ...................Copper Andrew Stringer.................Silver

Orthopaedic Patient Raises over £3000 for Bone and Joint Research Centre

Margaret Luckett-Gray from Walcott raised £3250 for the Norfolk Bone and Joint Appeal by organising a Variety Show at Davenport’s Magic Kingdom recently.

unique array of institutions and the people of East Anglia to make the most important difference of them all – human lives saved and human life enhanced”.

Mrs Luckett-Gray who suffers from an undiagnosed bone condition has been raising funds for Orthopaedic Research for many years. She presented the cheque to Professor of Medicine at the University of East Anglia, and Director-Designate of the Norfolk Bone and Joint Centre, Prof Bill Fraser.

The Bone and Joint Centre will be dedicated to researching and finding new treatments for chronic bone diseases including arthritis, osteoporosis, joint replacements and Paget’s disease to name but a few.

Margaret Luckett-Gray said, “I am always supportive of all orthopaedic research and was delighted to have had the opportunity to raise this money towards the Appeal. I would also like to extend a big thank you to everybody who supported the Show, and also to the Artistes who gave their time for free including Roy Davenport, Sharon Louise, Bev Bishop, Pat Nearney, Oliver Garwood, Jason Lambert and Judi Daykin.

“The University of East Anglia, in partnership with the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital is constructing the new Medical Research Centre to give Researchers, Clinicians and their patients the space, facilities and equipment necessary for ground-breaking research to happen”, said a spokesman for the UEA.

The Centre is currently under construction within the hospital grounds with a price tag of £19 million and a spokesman for the Bone and Joint Appeal, which is raising £1 million to support the development of the centre, said, “We have a window of opportunity and all the elements are in place, and the centre will open later this year.

Professor of Medicine at the University of East Anglia, and Director-Designate of the Norfolk Bone and Joint Centre, Prof Bill Fraser, said “I am delighted to accept this cheque from Margaret, who has raised a very handsome sum of money for the Norfolk Bone and Joint Appeal through staging a variety show at Davenport’s Magic Kingdom. Margaret has been incredibly determined to help us move forward in our goal of raising £1m locally towards the building of the new Norwich Medical Research

“After Planning Permission was granted construction began in August 2013. All that remains is for individuals, Companies, Trusts and Foundations to join forces with Norwich’s

The show is due to feature song and dance from the musicals and much more. The players are currently recruiting members aged eight and upwards who would like to get involved with a live show.

This is the Players’ 16th year since its formation back in 1998. Director Colin Jeary said 'We are currently seeking new members, we don't charge any joining fees or subscriptions - we just ask that the people that come are keen to get involved with a live show.'

“This donation helps us construct the Norfolk Bone and Joint Centre, where UEA scientists and medical students will work with patients and Clinicians from the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital to create new diagnostics, treatments and perhaps even cures for bone diseases such as osteoporosis and Paget’s disease. We’d like to thank all the people that supported Margaret’s show and those who have given independent donations as a result. It’s been a magnificent effort”

Further information can be found at www.uea.ac.uk/boneandjoint, where donations can also be made. UEA has charitable status, which covers the Norfolk Bone and Joint Appeal.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Several of the kittens mentioned last time have now been re-homed or reserved (including Badger the little kitten whose photo was featured). We do still have kittens in care, although some are not yet old enough to leave us. Adult cats have also left for new homes or been reserved. These include Murphy, our cat with a curly coat and curly whiskers, and dear little Guinness, the last of our FIV cats, has also left for pastures new. You may recall that when Guinness tested positive for FIV the kittens from both litters had to be tested too, but fortunately their tests gave a negative result. Two of her kittens, who were already adults, are still with us and although they were quite timid to begin with, both now enjoy their play times and also having a fuss made.

Several cats from the waiting list have now filled their places and all have settled in well. Two of these had been abandoned by their previous owner when they got a dog and had been fed for over a month by a concerned neighbour who had also been grooming Sir Andrew, who, being longhaired and neglected by his owner, had several mats in his coat. Michael and Sir Andrew are both nice natured cats and our vet’s estimate they are 5 years and 10 years respectively. The gentleman who signed them over to us was also concerned about Sir Andrew as he appeared to have trouble eating, so this was discussed with the vet on their first visit there. We were not surprised to learn that Sir Andrew

needed a “dental”. With several teeth now missing and antibiotics to clear up any infections he is now a much happier little cat, able to enjoy his food free from pain and receiving lots of attention from his fosterer’s family.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give Stephanie Sir Andrew, 10 years old and feeling a call on 01692 535858. much happier after his dental Alternatively you can visit www.cats.org.uk/northwalsham for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered. If however you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher).

Street Collection for Cats Protection

I, Rachel Wright, give notice that the Street Collection that took place in Hoveton for The North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection on 19 July raised the sum of £141.64. No expenses or payments were incurred. May I thank the loyal band of helpers for doing the collection and all who generously donated on the day.

leant the financial skills of the rich, including tax free investment. Roy presently conducts seminars to senior police officers, with visits to clients in Dubai.

How to have a healthy and wealthy retirement.

While this is the ambition of many, it is one that is frequently not realized. This is something which wealth management adviser Roy Wood addressed when he spoke to Probus members last month.

Following a happy spell at Barclays after university, he was approached by Rothschilds and joined them at St James Place, where he

Britain, he claims is an expensive place in which to retire, suggesting that the real increases in the cost of living are considerably greater than the official figures given by the government. For this reason many retirees choose exotic climes, including Asia, returning for the benefits of the NHS when health problems arise. It may be relevant to note that not all countries offer reciprocal health treatment or the benefit of index linking to state pensions. Roy advised that ideally one should save or invest about a tenth of our earned income, and divide capital into two pots. The first pot is for cash needed at relatively short notice for example house repairs. The second is dedicated to investment, including stocks and shares, commodities, government gilts, bonds

and cash, which can provide interest of 7% after charges. It is the latter area where the private investor may benefit from professional advice, including inheritance tax and arrangements for appointing a Lasting Power of Attorney. There is a strong tendency to delay action over these matters, which may prove expensive, especially if the client has already lost some of his/her faculties.

One former chancellor is claimed to have said that the only people who pay inheritance tax are those who dislike their relatives more than the Inland Revenue!

Roy’s observations were interspersed with a certain dry humour. He referred to a previous presentation to a Probus Club, when his delivery was interrupted by the passing of a funeral cortege. All the members stood in respectful silence, broken only by the President saying “Well, she was my wife for forty years”.

The next meeting will be at the Community Centre on 27 August. New members are always welcome.

Thank you, thank you, thank you to Waitrose North Walsham for their generous donation and to all their customers who chose our community choir and voted with their green disc. We plan to use the £290 to purchase moveable lighting for when we perform in the local churches. Our next performance will be our Christmas concert on 6 December. The programme of French and English promises to be a festive affair including pieces by Marc-Antoine Charpentier, famous for writing the music used as theme to the Eurovision Song Contest, as well as a selection of Christmas Carols ranging from traditional works such as John Taverner's 'The Lamb' and arrangements by John Rutter, to arrangements of Frosty the Snowman and a new carol written by our musical director David Ballard.

Cantamus will begin rehearsing for this concert on Thursday 4 September at 7.30pm in Southrepps Church. We are a very friendly choir prone to exercising our vocal chords in laughter as much as song. If you love singing do come and join us. No auditions are required. Our singers are of mixed ability, some extremely experienced; others whose only experience is in the shower and with our strong community spirit, you’ll be surprised how soon you become part of the team, looking forward to the Thursday rehearsals. As our members come from Sheringham to Stalham, Mundesley to Aysham if transport is a problem a lift share may be possible. For more information please contact David on 07785 782 498. We look forward to singing with you.

Labour's Parliamentary Candidate Meets Voters at Street Surgeries

Throughout June and July Labour's Parliamentary Candidate Denise Burke has been meeting voters on the streets of North Norfolk and listening to their concerns and issues in weekly street stalls.

The surgeries have already taken Denise to Sheringham, Cromer, Stalham, North Walsham and Holt with more dates to be added throughout the summer.

Mrs Burke is interested in meeting both non-voters and voters from across the political spectrum. She is particularly keen to meet those with stories or issues she can help take up as part of casework.

Denise Burke says she had a positive response to the surgeries so far “Our first street stalls in June were met with a positive response from local voters. The reaction I am getting is that many residents are looking for an alternative voice to the parties within the coalition government. I am keen to speak to residents about local and national issues including housing, cuts to the NHS, and the state of the economy.”

She added “It is becoming clear that, despite talk about a recovery from the Prime Minister, it is not being seen in North Norfolk where incomes are falling and house prices are rising.”

More dates for Denise Burke's street surgeries will be listed at www.norfolklabour.co.uk. You can also email denise.burke@norfolklabour.co.uk

Victory for parents in Happisburgh Common School Bus campaign

Norman Lamb and local councillors Lee Walker and Eric Seward have welcomed news that Happisburgh Common’s school bus will not be withdrawn.

Parents were shocked to be told that Norfolk County Council was considering removal of the bus to Happisburgh school because of the distance to the school and because a safe walking route existed. Parents launched a petition to demand a change of heart. They produced photos of the walking route showing it flooded and, and was sometimes blocked by large

18

lorries. Now the Council has changed its mind and the school bus will be retained.

Norman Lamb and District Councillor Lee Walker worked with County Councillor Eric Seward and local parents to support the campaign. Last month, parents presented the petition to Norman Lamb at the school.

“I am delighted to hear that the campaign has been successful. The route was clearly not appropriate for young children to be walking to school. Common sense has prevailed” commented Norman Lamb.

Rock (Buns) & Rolling (Pins) WI

At our June meeting, our President, Elsa, welcomed 17 members, one new member and two visitors.

We had a very busy agenda and to begin, our speaker was Jo Thompson, an RNLI Beach Lifeguard. Jo began by giving us a brief history of the RNLI. Lifeguards were first introduced in 2001 with Norfolk getting its first in 2007. Countrywide there are 215 beaches patrolled. Equipment includes bicycles and sometimes quad bikes to reach stations with rescue tubes and Kevlar coated paddle boards to reach and rescue people in the water.

Lifeguards begin with initial training followed by specific RNLI training. They learn First Aid and rescue skills and have beach training. Jo described the rigorous monthly tests which all lifeguards must pass. For example, be able to swim 400m in 7mins 30 secs, run 200m on sand in 40 secs and be able to demonstrate both

beach and swim rescue as well as First Aid and CPR. Falls, heart attacks, strokes and cold water issues are all covered. Beaches are patrolled between May and September with numbers of lifeguards increasing during the peak summer period. Cromer is home to a Surf Lifesaving Club where children and adults practice life saving skills and have fun.

It was a very interesting talk with informative slideshow.

Our second speaker was Barry Meadows of mycromer.co.uk. Barry explained that in the modern, web dominated world, small independent retailers are losing out to the likes of Amazon and other big businesses which appear on page 1 of every Google search. Cromer has lots of independent shops and by being a member of mycromer.co.uk and part of the larger myhighstreet.com these shops could be selling to a wider area.

Many of the small, family-run shops in Cromer struggle with even basic e-mail and need help. Some have websites, Twitter accounts and

Facebook pages which they rarely, if ever, use. myhightst.com presents a positive image online and is a low cost, easy portal. Cromer, as a pioneer town, currently has free membership with all inclusive shops just having to pay 10% commission on goods sold through the website. A positive talk in line with the WI SOS for High Streets campaign which began as a resolution calling for an end to the decline of our high streets, passed in 2013 with a majority of 87%.

We were also joined by 'chatterboxes' Penny and Kevin from the Outstanding in the Field project funded by Time to Change, England's biggest programme to end the stigma and discrimination faced by people with mental health problems.

Our August meeting will be an Evening Garden Party at Northrepps International Airport. Contact us for more details. Visitors are very welcome at our meetings, we just ask for £4 to help with meeting costs. Complimentary tea and cake provided at all meetings.

For more details, find us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter @RockBunsWI or visit our website at www.rockbuns.wordpress.com.

Labour welcomes 4G phone signal investment in North Norfolk

The North Norfolk Labour Party has welcomed proposals that will bring 4G investment to North Norfolk before the end of the year, but is urging companies not to lose track of ensuring 100% coverage in rural areas so customers can use the most "basic features of a mobile phone".

Both Cromer and Norwich are key targets for 4G from Three before the end of the year according to the company’s coverage checker, with the provider already offering 3G signal in a number of North Norfolk towns.

The local Labour Party hopes that other providers will follow suit and increase their 3G and 4G coverage in North Norfolk as it believes good phone signal and fast mobile 22

internet is vital for tourism and business, and because currently too many pockets of the district cannot even make a basic phone call or receive texts.

Labour has written to Vodafone bosses urging them to make urgent improvements to their infrastructure in North Norfolk after more phone signal problems have dogged customers in and around Sheringham this month.

Jono Read, spokesperson for North Norfolk Labour Party, said “Three are the first company to earmark investment in 4G technology in North Norfolk and we hope this will now lead to other companies following suit. Having superfast mobile internet is vital for business and tourism in our towns, and will open up

new avenues for the district.

However in the race for 4G these companies should not lose sight of ensuring rural areas have a robust signal to use even the basic features of a mobile phone like making a phone call or receiving a text message. Even in areas where there is signal the technology is dated and failing.

Again this month Vodafone customers in Sheringham have again suffered from signal problems that have been causing problems in the town for over a year, and we have again written to the company urging them to make the improvements that are desperately needed.”

Concern over ambulance chief's pay and working hours

A Labour MP has criticised the salary of the region’s ambulance chief after he received a £50k pay rise for taking on the role of part-time. Dr Anthony Marsh’s salary has risen from £182,000 to £232,000 – more than the salary of the Prime Minister – after he took on a part-time role at the East of England Ambulance Service Trust on top of his role in the West Midlands.

West Midlands MP Tom Watson has called on government ministers to intervene after criticising the lavish figure at a time when ambulance staff have seen pay cut in real terms. The Trust has responded to say that Mr Marsh is saving tax payers money by doing the two roles instead of having two individuals – and that he works “at least 70 hours a week”. This has sparked North Norfolk Labour’s Act on Ambulances campaigners to raise concerns about the number of hours Dr Anthony Marsh is said to work.

Denise Burke, the Labour parliamentary candidate for North Norfolk, said “Whether you feel the figure is justified or not I believe if Dr Marsh is only doing two roles part-time he should only be paid for the role of one full-time chief. With a £50k pay rise for the job he needs to show his worth and prove he is the right man to bring in the changes we so desperately need. There has been progress but it's been a slow process so far."

"My biggest concern is how sustainable the 70 hours working week is – the last thing we want is for him to reach burnout from the number of hours he is working because he is doing such an important role.”

Dear Margaret,

I help to run a group of people who meet every Tuesday at Stalham Youth Club on Recreation Road, Stalham, between 11am and 2pm. We mainly welcome those who have been mentally ill but anyone is welcome to come along. Tea and coffee are provided and one of the members cooks us a two course lunch. The first visit is free and then we pay £4 per week to cover the cost of lunch and rent of the premises. Ladies are especially welcome as we only have two lady members. There are five pool tables which are free to use and we chat about anything and everything! If you don’t have transport we have Chris in Trimingham, Gary in Catfield and Daniel or myself in North Walsham who will gladly give you a lift. Just come along or give me a ring on 01692 402038 or 07919 865413 for more details. Yours sincerely, Richard Baker

“London comes to Norfolk” TREVOR WOODS’ LONDON

A major exhibition of over 40 brand new paintings at Gallery Plus, Wells-next-the-Sea

Following the success of last year’s Londonthemed exhibition, Trevor is doing it all over again... but with a very different approach.

Expect to see views you haven’t seen before, new painting methods, and a new sense of imagination, whilst always retaining his unique and instantly recognisable style.

and sell his work locally. Over the next couple of years he developed a very distinctive style and the skill of breaking down what he sees in everyday life into shapes and bold colours. Finding it increasingly difficult to devote enough time to painting, he became a full time artist in 2004 and has not looked back since!

Working in acrylic and ink, his graphic style has won much acclaim and has resulted in his paintings being commissioned and purchased for private collections in this country and abroad. His paintings are enormously popular: Strong graphic representations of instantly recognisable scenes without the every-day clutter, branching the link between a distinctive modern style and familiar views.

Signature pieces will include London skylines, the Underground, and observations of public spaces.

Trevor will be available throughout the exhibition to answer any questions and talk about his work and inspirations.

Trevor was born in Maidstone, Kent, in Trevor’s fresh approach 1974 and moved with his London Underground encourages the observer to family to Norfolk in look at everyday views in a 1977. He has always had a new light; they are drawn to the clean lines, flat keen interest in painting and design, but it was colours and dark shadows that make up each not until 2001 that he was able to realise his image. Every painting evolves from his ability ambitions and began to paint in his spare time

St Paul’s Reflected

to look at a view and then break it down into its raw elements; it’s more about what he leaves out than what he includes.

The exhibition opens with an all-day preview - all welcome to join us for a glass of Prosecco on Saturday 16 August and continues daily until Sunday 31 August. Open Mon-Sat 10am-5pm, Sun 11am-4pm Gallery Plus, Warham Road, Wells-next-the-Sea, Norfolk, NR23 1QA 01328 711609 www.gallery-plus.co.uk info@gallery-plus.co.uk

Suffield Annual 50 Bird Clay Shoot

This event, which this year will take place on 6 September, has gone from strength to strength since the first shoot was held in 2010 to raise money for the upkeep of the village hall. Visitor numbers have doubled since then, attracted by cleverly laid out stands which provide just the right amount of challenge to ensure good sport for shooters at all levels of ability. The £100 first prize is another attraction of course, as are very good second and third prizes, but perhaps for many the real appeal is the opportunity to shoot in a relaxed local atmosphere against the backdrop of some of the best views Norfolk has to offer.

Beginners of all ages are catered for too, by a separate ‘have a go’ stand where novices can try their hand under the supervision of a qualified shooting instructor, who will even provide a gun for them to shoot with. And this year for the first time, visitors will also be able to try out archery if they fancy a more sedate approach to target shooting.

Stalls offer a variety of shooting merchandise for sale, and a BBQ and tea tent provides the ideal spot from which to watch the action, chat with old friends and make new ones - an excellent day out, not to be missed. Sponsored Bike Ride for Brain Tumour Charity

Sainsbury’s North Walsham, HR Manager, Karen Palmer took part in the Cozens Hardy Blickling sponsored Bike ride Sunday 20 July. She cycled over 50 miles with a group of colleagues from the other store where she works, Longwater, Norwich.

The group effort has raised over £1000 for The Brain Tumour Charity. The group were remembering Judy Long, who passed away in July 2013. She had been a friend of Karen’s for 5 years and a much respected employee of Sainsbury’s for 23 years. Judy was never off sick from work until weeks before she was diagnosed with this devastating form of cancer.

In our picture Karen’s bike, 181, holds a picture of Judy. Karen said ‘I was chuffed, it was a nice feeling to ride for Judy’.
