Talk about being a Good Neighbour
It takes many things to make a community but a very important part of what it means to be a community is people looking out for one another and being there to give help and support when it’s needed. Being good neighbours, in short.
isolated local residents in simple ways such as by befriending them, helping with domestic tasks like mowing the garden or putting up curtains or changing light bulbs, arranging appointments, helping with shopping, or giving a lift to shops or appointments. The work of each Scheme is undertaken by local volunteers guided by a steering committee of local people.
Neighbourliness is the social glue that bonds communities together. It helps create an environment where people feel safe and secure because they have a genuine connection with one another. However, in the modern world people are increasingly mobile. Residents move away from the places they were brought up in and new people move in to replace them. The result is that it’s increasingly difficult to have that genuine connection with one another with the consequence that some people can become isolated and feel increasingly unsafe and insecure.
Norfolk Rural Community Council (Norfolk RCC) is a local charity which works to help rural communities identify and address their needs. Norfolk RCC has already helped set up several Good Neighbour Schemes across the county and, thanks to funding from Norfolk County Council’s Healthy Communities project, they can now assist with setting up a number of new Schemes.
North Walsham has been identified as a community that may benefit from having a Scheme so Henry Meiklejohn from Norfolk RCC will be giving a short talk about what’s
To help address the issue, Good Neighbour Schemes have been successfully set up elsewhere in Norfolk and beyond.
While the scope of activities Good Neighbour Schemes can undertake is very broad, typically they assist more vulnerable, disabled or
involved in North Walsham Community Centre (next to the Library on New Road) on Thursday 27th November starting at 7.30pm.
Good Neighbour Schemes are a great way to feel part of the community, to meet new people and to make a difference in your community, so please come along if you might like to get involved or are simply interested in finding out a bit more about it.
In the meantime, if you would like to get involved but can’t make it on the night, or if you have any questions about Good Neighbour Schemes in general, please contact Henry Meiklejohn at Norfolk RCC by emailing henry@norfolkrcc.org.uk or by calling 01362-698216.

Paston Mathematics Challenge Autumn 2014
On the morning of Monday 20 October, Paston Sixth Form College hosted its Mathematics Challenge, an annual event which has been running since 1991, where the High Schools of North Norfolk are invited to pit their mathematical wits against each other.
This year we were glad to welcome a total of ten teams from Acle, Flegg, Broadland, Cromer, North Walsham, Aylsham and Sheringham High Schools. The prize for the winners was to carry off the prestigious Paston Challenge trophy, with its depiction in gold of the classical 'Squaring the Square' problem, solved by a group of young university mathematicians back in 1976.
This year’s teams, each containing four students, jousted together for the trophy over two demanding rounds of questions. Round 1 was based on the teams working together to
solve six long tasks, while round two invited students to tackle quick fire questions against the clock. Subjects for questions ranged from missiles on course to hit each other in outer space, to some of Albert Einstein’s mental arithmetic, to deciphering a sequence of hieroglyphics. This year, four teams shone brightly, Acle 1 scored 188 out of 220. Just pipping them, however, were the two Broadland teams that matched each other on a score of 189 to come second equal. Carrying all before them, however just a nose in front, were Sheringham 1, on 191 points.
Kevin Grieve, Principal, presented the trophy to the winners, with certificates for them and the runners-up team. He congratulated everyone there on the atmosphere of involvement and hard work. Our thanks also go to the many Paston students who helped out with the day – we could not have done it without them! The competition this year was as tight as always, and our congratulations go to the victors and to everyone who took part. Same time, same place next year! Photo: credit Greg Hayward
Gold Award for Paston Science student
Staff and students from Paston Sixth Form College attended a celebration awards evening at the University of East Anglia to recognise their current scientific research.
The Nuffield Research Placement scheme offers the opportunity for outstanding A level students who have a real enthusiasm for science to take part in real research programmes at some of Britain’s most prestigious scientific establishments. Competition for places on the programme is considerable and only 20 out of 200 applications were successful this year.
project earned a Crest Gold Award from the British Science Association, while Harry was one of four students selected to give a presentation on his project to the assembled audience of academics, parents and stakeholders. Julian Thomas, a Biology teacher at Paston, said “he was extremely proud of Jenna and Harry’s achievement in scientific research and it was a great honour for them to be recognised with these awards.” Photo: Greg Hayward
Two of the successful applicants were from Paston Sixth Form College, with Harry Twining securing a placement at the John Innes Centre, where he investigated the uptake of nitrate fertilisers by crop plants, and Jenna Hatch, who worked at the University of East Anglia to develop a model organism to study photosynthesis in the oceans. Jenna’s research
Karate Gold medal success for Paston student
Lucy brewer an AS Level student at Paston Sixth Form College has just returned with a team gold medal after representing Great Britain in the World Junior Karate Championships in Poland. Lucy who is studying Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Geography came fourth in the individual European Championship last year and managed fifth place in the girls individual 55kg at the world junior event. Lucy, a member of the Phoenix Karate School, started karate when she was six, gaining her black belt at thirteen and her adult black belt at sixteen. It was a great honour for Lucy to represent her country at world championship level and gain the team gold medal. She not only works hard on her training and College work but also carries out fund raising to cover all her costs. Lucy will compete next year in the European championship in Belgium and later in the world championships in Brazil.
Principal Kevin Grieve said “all the staff and students are extremely proud of her gold medal achievement”. Photo: Greg Hayward In association with www.northwalshamdeals.co.uk

Pan-seared Venison Loin
We’ve been having a fantastically busy autumn here at The Grove, helped by the gorgeous weather of course. It’s been good to see the Grove pheasants back in full plumage and introducing their latest generation to us here (they are strictly off-limits to the kitchen staff though!)
The Autumn Menu has been a real success and our wild Norfolk venison has been flying off the pass. There is a family of red deer haunting Cromer; they are hardly ever seen but on the odd occasion the big stag will make an appearance on the front lawn – no-one has been quick enough to get a picture yet but hopefully one day he will stand still long enough…
Please do come in and see us for dinner and don’t forget we are taking bookings for Christmas parties - private dining for up to 35 people.
Ingredients 650g centre cut loin (Icarus will do this for you) 3 to 4 sprigs of rosemary leaves (chopped) 1 tsp black pepper Salt 2 tsp vegetable oil
For the jus 250ml red wine 4 tbsp butter 4 tbsp plain flour Salt and pepper
■ Pre-heat the oven to 200c or gas mark 6 ■ Trim any sinew from the venison, rub the loin in oil and roll in the rosemary and pepper ■ Heat a large heavy-based frying pan and sear the loin for a couple of minutes; turn and sear the underside and both ends. ■ Place the venison on a roasting tin and put in the oven for 10-12 minutes (rare) or a little longer depending on taste. ■ Remove and rest for 10 minutes.
North Walsham Junior School Cake Sale
On 26 September a group of students from North Walsham Junior School, headed by Lena Whitwood in year 6, held a cake sale in aid of Macmillan World’s Biggest Coffee Morning.
Jus ■ Mix the flour and softened butter together to make a buerre manie. Heat the pan on the hob and add the red wine to deglaze, then reduce for ten minutes. ■ Add a teaspoon or two of the buerre manie or red wine to thicken.
To serve slice the venison into ½ inch thick medallions and drizzle over the jus.

Parents and carers inundated the school with a huge selection of delicious cakes and biscuits which were displayed outside the school at the end of the day and then sold by the students with a great entrepreneurial flair, raising the amazing sum of £160.24.
Well done to Lena and all the students involved and thank you to everybody who donated cakes and visited the stall for their generosity.

Churches Together in North Walsham Christmas Lunch
I know it is early to be thinking of this or any other Christmas event but we are already planning this year’s lunch on Christmas Day.
All that we ask is do you live in North Walsham and will you be on your own on Christmas Day? If the answer is yes why not consider joining us at the Community Centre for a traditional Christmas lunch which is served at 1pm and will finish off with tea and Christmas cake and listening to the Queens speech.
The lunch is organized by Churches Together in North Walsham, free of charge, supported financially by local charities and businesses. You do not have to be a member of a church to be more than welcome.
If you would like more information or an application form, if you have not previously attended, please write to Mr. R. Vincent 14 Marshgate North Walsham NR28 9EE or email Roger.vincent@hotmail .co.uk
TO ALL MY LITTLE FRIENDS... IN AYLSHAM!
Hello Boys and Girls, I know that Christmas seems a long way off but I just had to write and let you know that I shall be coming to see you all very soon – I am so excited!
I do love Aylsham – those lovely girls at Eclipse Hair Salon make me feel so at home in my Grotto and I always find it helpful to hear what presents you would like to receive on Christmas Day. It can be such a busy time for me and my elves finding just the right present to drop down your chimney!
I am told that if Mummy and Daddy have been good you can bring them along too! The Shops will be opening late and there will be lots of stalls for all their Christmas shopping. With plenty of festive food and drink available you won’t have to worry about Dad getting grumpy because he wants his tea! Mum will appreciate the live music and entertainment on offer and a trip to the Parish Church to see the Christmas Tree Festival

Norfolk Can Inspire to become part of fellow local charity The Benjamin Foundation
Norfolk Can Inspire (NCI) will become part of fellow local charity The Benjamin Foundation from 1 December, to help its work with 16-24 year olds grow into the future. NCI has been working with young adults dealing with difficulties such as mental or physical illness, learning difficulties and other issues. Providing these young people with volunteering opportunities in their local community enables them to be acknowledged as good citizens. For some this had led to achieving the nationally
accredited NCI Award in Employability Skills.
Richard Jewson, Chairman of the Board of Norfolk Can Inspire, said “The Trustees of Norfolk Can Inspire are delighted by the merger with The Benjamin Foundation. A good deal has been achieved in establishing the web based service to help young people in Norfolk to fulfil their potential, in the two years since we started. We believe that The Benjamin Foundation shares our vision and has the skills and resources to drive this forward and to reach out to those who would most benefit from the help that NCI can give”.
The Benjamin Foundation is a Norfolk charity that has been supporting children, young people and families for twenty years. Each year it supports around 2,000 people across the county and has wide experience of working with the same 16-24 year old age group that NCI has been supporting. The Foundation has a number of services supporting young people
with issues like homelessness by providing a home and support for over 100 people at any one time; helping them to become happy and independent young people able to make their own way in life.
Richard Draper, founder and chief executive of The Benjamin Foundation, said “Our ambition is to build on the great work that NCI has done so far and continue to help young people gain experience both within their communities and in the work place as part of their overall development. We will work with other stakeholders to secure funding for the service and hope to be able to announce more details in the first quarter of 2015.”

£638,000 boost for children in Norfolk
Nurseries, childminders and other early years providers in Norfolk are set for a £638,000 cash injection to help three and four-year-olds from disadvantaged families.
Children from low income families have often fallen behind more well off classmates before they even start school.
But from April 2015, the Early Years Pupil Premium - which has been backed by groups like Barnados, 4Children and the Child Poverty Action Group - will mean extra money to make sure every child gets a fair start.
backgrounds have fallen well behind their peers, and all too often they never catch up. The Liberal Democrats want to give every child a fair start in life, whatever their background. All the evidence shows that helping children as early as possible is key to making sure they do not fall behind. This announcement shows we are taking crucial steps to tackle disadvantage in our society. By investing £638,418 in Norfolk to help the most disadvantaged three and four-year-olds, Liberal Democrats are ensuring that children are getting the best possible start in life.”
Norman Lamb said "By the time they reach school, many children from the poorest

with 22 existing councillors. The prospective candidates had the opportunity to chat to each of the councillors about key elements of the role and in more detail about different service areas of the Council, including housing, planning, licensing, economic development and environment.

It comes on top of Lib Dem-led changes in Government to help families, which include shared parental leave, tax free childcare, Free School Meals, and a pupil premium for school age children.
Liberal Democrat Schools Minister David Laws added "Every child deserves the opportunity to reach their full potential, whatever their background. Liberal Democrats in government have already extended free early years education for all children in Norfolk. Now this cash boost will mean extra support for those children who need it most.”
Prospective councillors enjoy a date with a difference
Members of the public were invited to find out what being a councillor involves and to learn about how the council works ahead of the District Council elections on Thursday 7 May 2015.
The would-be councillors heard a presentation from NNDC Leader, Tom FitzPatrick. Cllr. FitzPatrick outlined how local government works and what prospective candidates can expect from the role, ranging from representing communities and giving a voice to local people to making decisions about council services. The group enjoyed a ‘speed-dating’ session
12
The event was devised with cross-party support as part of a drive to attract a wide variety of people to stand for election in May 2015.
Chairman of NNDC’s Member Development Group and Cabinet Member, Glyn Williams said, “I was delighted to see so many people with different skills and from different backgrounds showing such enthusiasm for a challenging, but immensely rewarding role.
“The speed-dating session format worked well and gave each prospective candidate an opportunity to chat with existing councillors. I am confident they left with plenty of information about what the role entails and hopefully with even more enthusiasm to stand as a councillor in next year’s elections.”
The next elections for all 48 seats (representing 34 wards) on North Norfolk District Council will take place on Thursday 7 May 2015.
If you would like further information about becoming a councillor, please contact Emma Denny on 01263 516010 or email emma.denny@north-norfolk.gov.uk

Could you provide a safe place to live for a homeless young person?
The Benjamin Foundation invites you to its ‘Heart & Home’ open evening on Thursday 20 November from 5.30-7.30pm at North Walsham Sports Centre
The Benjamin Foundation is searching for families and individuals in Norfolk who are prepared to open up their homes to a young person aged from 16 years upwards with nowhere to live. Launched in 2010, the charity’s ‘Heart & Home’ service urgently needs more hosts across the county to provide a safe and supportive home for a homeless young person. The charity is holding an open evening from 5.30pm until 7.30pm on Thursday 20 November at North Walsham Sports Centre, where people can find out more. You can drop in any time to meet staff from The Benjamin Foundation and an existing host will also be on hand to share their experience of looking after a young person in their home.
Quantifying the real number of homeless people in a rural county such as Norfolk is difficult but The Benjamin Foundation estimates that the figure runs into thousands. The figure takes into account those on housing waiting lists, those living rough and the hundreds more ‘sofa-surfers’. that is people with no permanent home who rely on the hospitality of friends and family. Many young people have to leave the county each year because the shortage of placement opportunities within the county.

“Our Heart and Home service provide a valuable additional way of helping young homeless people,” explains Matt Garrod, Director of Operations (Housing and Homelessness) at The Benjamin Foundation. “Our hosts give the young person a home environment and the support of a family or individual. It’s important to say that the expectations of a host are not the same as for foster carers. These young people may only need a few months in a safe and kind home whilst they find independent accommodation or rectify family problems.”
Hosts are expected to provide a base level of support and a stable home environment. The young person needs his or her own bedroom with access to kitchen, bathroom and living area. Before being placed with a host every young person is carefully assessed by The Benjamin Foundation and matched to the right host. The scheme is not designed for young people who require intensive support.
Families and individuals who are accepted as hosts receive comprehensive training in child protection as well as going through The Benjamin Foundation’s own induction course.

Heart & Home provides homeless young people, who are usually 16 or 17 years old and may have been in the care system, with a room of their own for anything from a couple of nights to a couple of years. Families and individuals accepted as hosts receive comprehensive support and training from The Benjamin Foundation and play a vital role in helping these young people gain independent life skills and achieve their goals. The host also receives a support payment whilst the young person stays with them.

of our members describing it as 'a Royal Striptease'. The French hood was made popular by Anne who introduced the fashion from her time in the French court. Molly displayed the hood, decorated with pearls, made as close to original as possible. The girdle, like a wide belt, made from silk with tassels would have been used to hang books or gloves on. The French gown in black was an over-dress with open front. Sleeves were tied in so could be changed to match or contrast with the gown. Pins were used to hold everything in place and this is where the term 'pin money' comes from meaning small amounts put away to buy pins. A stomacher, often stiffened with reeds or willow, was a separate section covering the front of the gown. The gown, which was lined in silk, was laced at the front through hand-worked eyelets. Cartridge pleats in the back used nine yards of fabric. The Kirtle was worn beneath the gown, again silk-lined, with

A red petticoat was silk lined with linen Beneath this was a Spanish Farthingale, a three-hooped item tied at the waist and usually worn on special occasions to give the gown a lovely shape. The knitted stockings were made of wool, with garters to hold them up. A pair of duck-billed shoes completed the marvellous, historically correct outfit. A very enjoyable, eye-opening and informative evening which we all agreed was great fun. Molly revealed that her costume wardrobe spans 3,000 years! Now we'd all love to see that! Schools in North Walsham receive their
new Active Kids equipment from Sainsbury's
North Walsham Infant School in Manor Road, North Walsham collected 71077 Sainsbury's Active Kids vouchers and was the top collecting organisation in the whole of Norfolk this year.
in-store between January and 20 May, earning one voucher for every £10 spent in supermarkets and £5 in convenience stores.
This September, practical cookery became compulsory for children up to Year 9 in the new national curriculum, published by the Department for Education. To support these key changes, over 100 new cookery and nutrition toolkits were added to the range of sports and cooking equipment. Teacher resource toolkits, developed in collaboration with the British Nutritional Foundation and the Department of Education, will equip school children with the materials, ingredients and knowledge to learn the skills to lead healthier lives.
Hannah Greef, Petrol Station Manager at Sainsbury's North Walsham, visited the school where she was once a pupil to celebrate this achievement and see the new equipment supplied from Active Kids which included games and toys and equipment for inside and outside activities.
The school, with the Junior School on the same site, has been registered to the Active Kids scheme since the start of the scheme and Headteacher Mrs Clare Fletcher said "Customers at Sainsbury's North Walsham have been really supportive this year and it's great to be the top collecting organisation in our area. The scheme has helped us teach the benefits of a healthier more active lifestyle to hundreds of children over the last few years and we're really looking forward to getting active with this year's equipment".

Waitrose Supports Britain's Biggest Tidy Up
Keep Britain Tidy is 60 years old this year. Waitrose North Walsham helped them celebrate this occasion by helping to tidy up Trimingham beach.
Partners from the branch volunteered their time and became "Waitrose Wombles" for the day.
Since 2008, The Big Tidy Up has helped to encourage more than half a million people in more than 25,000 groups to collect 120,000 bags of rubbish.
Nearly 53,000 schools, clubs and groups now signed up to benefit from their membership to Sainsbury's Active Kids. This year alone, the scheme has delivered over £14 million worth of equipment and experiences to schools, clubs and organisations. Meanwhile, £150 million* worth of equipment and experiences has been donated to schools, groups and clubs across the UK since it launched in 2005.

Happisburgh Lifeboat Station Volunteers Honoured
Happisburgh RNLI Lifeboat Station volunteers have been honoured by being asked to provide the colour party for the RNLI standard at the Annual National Service for Seafarers at St Pauls Cathedral in London on 15 October.
The Annual National Service for Seafarers has been held since 1905. This year it was also the 500 year anniversary of Trinity House and the London Watermen. As head of Trinity House, the Princess Royal was in attendance as well
as 2,500 people, all packed into the Cathedral.
The three volunteers selected to represent the Station have given over 54 yrs service to the RNLI and Happisburgh Station between them. Tim Grimmer, Senior Helmsman was the standard bearer with two escorts, Cubitt Siely and Tony Phenix, both Helmsmen at the Station.

Happisburgh RNLI Lifeboat Station
Volunteers were called into action last month to go to the aid of a dog reported 500m off the beach at Happisburgh.
A local lady had been walking her dogs along the beach when her six year old Italian Spinone, Clyde, went into the sea swimming after seagulls. She became worried when Clyde carried on swimming out to sea and called the Coastguard to ask for help, they in turn asked Happisburgh D-Class to be launched.
At 4.24pm Spirit of Berkhamsted left the beach with Cubitt Siely at the helm and Tony Phenix and Sean Ferguson as crew. Within minutes they spotted the dog swimming 500m off the beach. Sean entered the water to help Clyde into the boat, seeing the owner making her way to the Station. They then returned to Station and, as the Lifeboat was removed from the water, owner and dog were reunited. Mrs Brooks thanked the crew for all their help.
Spirit of Berkhamsted was refuelled and ready for service at 4.45 pm.

with their partners and were all very proud to be selected to carry out this role and represent the RNLI, also to have Happisburgh Station selected as it has celebrated its 100 years of service this year. Tim said he was very proud to be carrying the RNLI standard down the centre of St Pauls with the other 22 standards also present, in front of so many people.
Happisburgh was chosen from all the stations of the RNLI. The rest of Happisburgh’s volunteers were all ready for action had the call come.

Council to become a
‘Dementia Friendly Council’
North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) has announced it is to become a Dementia Friendly Council.
Working in partnership with the Norfolk Dementia Friendly Alliance, the Council will be delivering awareness training to staff to enable them to understand dementia and the issues that face sufferers of dementia and their families and carers.
Steps will be taken to support NNDC’s market towns, alongside Town Councils, to build communities which are dementia-friendly and to provide an opportunity to support dementia sufferers in managing their day to day life.
North Norfolk District Council Cabinet Member for Health and Wellbeing, John Lee said: “Dementia can have a devastating effect on those with the disorder and their families who are often carers. The chance of developing dementia increases significantly with age; as a District we have one of the oldest populations in the country so it’s vital that we work together with our local communities to create a positive environment that makes day to day life easier to manage.
“People with dementia face many challenges and negative experiences going about their daily lives and it’s important that we act and make positive changes to ensure they are not isolated and without support ”.
The Council will reviewing its Health Improvement Strategy which sets out the vital role it plays in reducing health inequalities and improving health for residents with a focus on preventative activity. The Strategy will also consider ways in which the Council shapes its services to provide better health outcomes across the District.

No Will Power
Written by Miranda Marshall – Director at Hayes + Storr Are you amongst the two-thirds of people who risk dying intestate?
New rules are to apply to the estates of those who die without a Will. To die without a valid Will is to be ‘intestate’. The Inheritance and Trustees’ Powers Act 2014 is now on the statute book and became law on 1st October 2014.
The position until October, where the deceased person dies intestate and leaves an estate worth more than £450,000, and is survived by a spouse/civil partner but where there are no children, is as follows: the survivor receives the ‘personal chattels’ (i.e. household furniture and other contents, car, jewellery, etc) but shares the remaining estate with the deceased’s parents. The spouse/civil partners gets £450,000 and half the balance, with the other half of the balance going to the parents equally. If there are no parents alive, the deceased’s siblings or their children take. The new rules give the spouse/civil partner in such circumstances 100% of the rest; which is thought to be much closer to the wish of the majority.
Where the intestate was married (or in a civil
partnership) and had children, the current rules are complex and involve trusts. Here the spouse/civil partner takes the chattels and the first £250,000. The balance is split into equal shares. One half passes to the children but is held on ‘statutory trusts’ until they reach 18, which contain old fashioned and inflexible provisions. The other half passes into a lifeinterest trust which allows the spouse only income arising and no right to the capital. The new rules still allow for half the residue over the £250,000 to go to the children but now the other 50% goes entirely to the surviving spouse, without the complexity and restriction of a life interest trust.
The £250,000 ‘statutory legacy’ passing to the survivor is now to be increased each five years in line with inflation in line with the Consumer Prices Index. It last rose in 2008.
Whilst these new measures certainly simplify matters, the best defence is to avoid intestacy altogether. Failure to leave a valid, up-to-date Will causes headaches for the family of the deceased. Not only do assets pass to people that the deceased would not have wished, but an intestate estate
Anyone involved in tourism?
Do you provide B & B or Self-catering accommodation? Do you have a café or restaurant? Do you sell mementoes? Do you run attractions or provide services?
A group of volunteers produces an annual B & B and Self-catering Guide for North Walsham and North East Norfolk, and it also has space for those advertising other visitor services. Up to 2,500 copies are distributed widely through the visitor advice centres in Cromer, Mundesley and North Walsham, through libraries, at the attractions, village shops and so on. It is also in demand by local people who need accommodation for family events. Because it is produced through voluntary effort, supported by North Walsham Town Council, advertising rates are low : £35 for accommodation providers, and £35 or more for other advertisers according to the space they require.
The 2015 edition is now being prepared. If you are interested in joining us, or would like to see a 2014 copy, you need to act quickly! Phone 01692 404114 in the mornings from 9.30 a.m., or email us at admin.@northwalsham-town.co.uk

And for those people who are unmarried (or not in a civil partnership) and have no family, or only unknown and distant family, the situation can be particularly dire. If you have no children, parents, siblings, nephews, nieces, grandparents, uncles, aunts or first cousins then without a will your estate will be what is called ‘Bona Vacantia’, which means that all your money will go to the state…….and you know how well they spend our money!

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
Duchess, the little kitten mentioned last time, is making satisfactory progress and like so many of the kittens in care, will soon be old enough to be available for adoption.
Kittens continue to arrive, while others wait patiently for a pen to become available. At the last count we noted that 120 kittens have been handed into care this year. If only people would get their cats neutered we would not be experiencing the problems that we are seeing this year. Many have joined us because their original owners have, in effect, abandoned their mother once she has become pregnant. Cats like the dear little one, probably less than a year old, we have recently returned to the area she originated from as she was traumatised being confined to one of our pens. Fortunately, she has been entrusted to the care of a young lady who is experienced with feral cats and willing to see if she will respond to receiving care having been given more space. If she is not happy living in a home environment she will support her living outside. Her kittens are still in care, although one has already been offered a home. Although three of these kittens have “webbed” paws, probably due to inbreeding, this will not make any difference to the lives they will lead.
If is fortunate that we had made arrangement for this little cat as Stephanie had a call from vets with regard to two four month old kittens which had been abandoned in a box by the side of the road. From their condition when taken to the vets it was apparent they had been there at least two days as they were ravenous and very thirsty, even trying to drink the water the vets were using to rinse them down after bathing them. Having so many kittens arrive as emergencies like does mean that our waiting list which contains cats that need to come into care (and also kittens who have people looking after them in the meantime) are still out there waiting for a space to become available.
If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit
www.cats.org.uk/ northwalsham
for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.
If, however, you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher).

Millfield Primary School in North Walsham was proud to present a special Harvest Festival to their families last month.
Each class chose a country, which celebrated Harvest time and presented a short narrative explaining their customs and traditions as well as singing our traditional Harvest songs.
After the success of last year, the school broke the afternoon into phase performances allowing the parents to choose which phase they wanted to watch, this enabled more parents and families to attend.
The Harvest festival was designed to showcase the rich and diverse cultures and the different types of food around the world and link it alongside our own Harvest traditions.
The Millfield Choir Club then sang beautifully in the interlude between the changes of phase performances.
The children also brought in food donations which will be distributed throughout our community in Harvest Gift Boxes. Mrs Harazdiuk; the Head Teacher; said “We feel it is important to bring the whole school community together in an informal way to join in with celebrating Harvest. Although it is a feat of organisation enabling 280 children to take part in such a short period of time- nevertheless we all enjoy it!”

Moving from Creams to Needle - Safely
At a certain point in our lives – between late 30s to late 40s – skin creams and early nights no longer seem able to work their magic for many of us. What makes this ageing process even more depressing is that we still feel young on the inside. It’s just our wrinkly foreheads and deepening nose to mouth lines that leave our self-confidence in tatters.
So, do we fork out on yet another skin cream or expensive serum, or do we book in for a full on face-lift? Thankfully many of us are waking up to the fact that there is a middle ground. Non-surgical cosmetic treatments are ideal for men and women who believe surgery is one step too far. No longer considered extreme and the preserve of film stars and celebrities, these treatments are now mainstream in the modern beauty regimen.
Dr Sanjay Gheyi, Medical director & laser surgeon of Coltishall cosmetic clinic says, “There is only so much a cream can do as it doesn’t penetrate the dermal layers. Creams sit on the surface of the skin and although they are important for conditioning and sun protection they are not going to turn the clock back.” These don’t come cheap either. Some of the “super” serums can cost several hundreds of pounds. However, non-surgical treatments are becoming not only more accessible but more affordable too.
Dr Gheyi agrees that it is a big step to make the leap between face creams and cosmetic
treatments but believes that, in the hands of an experienced cosmetic doctor, botulinum toxin and dermal fillers are a good middle ground for people who do not want surgery.
So what are his tips for safe treatments and to minimise risk of complications?
1] Choose your practitioner wisely. What is their background? Do they have a medical qualification? Have they had any training in cosmetic dermatology or surgery? How many treatments have they done and can they show you their results? Do they provide natural results or do their patients look ‘done’? This is very important because the person administering these treatments should not only be excellent at treatments, he or she should be able to manage complications should things go wrong. There is no shortage of people from different medical and even non-medical backgrounds offering these treatments. Remember you get what you pay for and cheapest is often not the best!
You have to know possible side effects and then make an informed choice.
3] Choose your product wisely. The most important thing is that a reputable product with a proven safety track record is used. Recently there has been a surge of new fillers coming into the market but a lot of these have far less research. The latest treatment is not necessarily the greatest. You don’t want to be a guinea pig for an untested product. Choose that safest product and avoid permanent fillers.

Volunteer says opportunity changed her life
A Norfolk woman has described how agreeing to become a volunteer has changed her life and got her back into work for the first time in more than four years.
Tina Monger, 20, had struggled to find a job she enjoyed ever since leaving school when she agreed to become a volunteer for North Norfolk Community Transport (NNCT), a charity providing a vital lifeline for people without access to transport.
Ms Monger, who lives in North Walsham, has a varied role as a passenger assistant, which includes assisting people with disabilities and children with special needs.

Of course it is also about giving something back to society so volunteering can also be very rewarding and foster self worth in individuals.”
NNCT offers a wide range of community transport services across north Norfolk for people who don't have their own transport or access to regular bus services. Its key services include a door to door Dial-a-Bus service and the MediRide service. These services allow people – “People tend to have the wrong including the elderly, those with idea about volunteering, there is impaired mobility and young people, a perception it is just retired people to carry out vital tasks such as attend with spare time on their hands but this medical appointments, go shopping, is simply not true. Youth Hubs SLAM Night
On 5 September North Norfolk Youth Hubs held their first SLAM event with support from The Garage in Norwich. The event brought together young talent from Cromer Academy, and further afield, who showcased their singing, dancing and musical abilities. Young people from the Youth Hub helped organise and run the event with support from their Youth Workers.
SLAM Night Review by Poppy Spencer (aged 14) The SLAM night, on 5 September, was just like a mini concert for young people. There were loads of really cool and interesting acts, like beat-boxing and dancing.
There was a lot of people involved: MAP
(a Youth Organisation), Youth HUBs (run by MAP, which are places around North Norfolk where teenagers can chill out and have fun) and The Garage (a creative industries, training and performance venue). The arts forms that were used were singing, dancing and people playing musical instruments.
My favourite part was when Jess Butcher sang and when the Glamps performed (they were a band). I really liked Jess because she has an amazing voice and is just a really great singer. I think the Glamps are great because they played really well and they’ve even written a few of their own songs. There wasn’t anything I didn’t like, the night was really great.

North Walsham Probus Club
A career change from gas engineer to IT consultant may seem unusual, but for Richard Neville it proved an opportunity to transfer the skills he had acquired installing and designing systems for gas and electrical circuits to expanding his expertise upon what had previously been a hobby.
Computer technology is simply a matter of logic, Richard claimed, when he addressed North Walsham Probus Club members at their monthly meeting last month. His career was cut short at British Gas after 30 years, but in retrospect he regards it as a benefit as it enabled him to turn what had hitherto been a hobby, into paid employment. When he began research into the field of computers he found that many of his contemporaries were graduates while he was ‘simply enjoying himself’.
The focus of his talk was on setting up your own web site. Usually clients approach him stating that they want one - ‘show us how you do it’. Formerly this required an in depth knowledge of a rather complicated code. This has been considerably simplified by the introduction of ‘Weebly’, which it claims gives millions of people an easy way to create a web site. It also provides a hosting service.
Why a website? is a frequently asked question. Simply because 56% of businesses have found that it gives them credibility, while 26% have discovered new markets. They also believe that it is preferable to Facebook and enables them to conduct business online. The initial step is to select a theme and identify your target audience. Studies have also found that a website reflects the personality of its creator!
Failure to succeed in setting up one’s own website is usually attributable to lack of confidence, or inability to maintain progress.
The next meeting will be on Wednesday 26 November. New members are always welcome. Ted Gadsden

Dear Margaret,
We have in North Walsham a wonderful venue in the Atrium Theatre, which is situated in the grounds of the High School at the junction between Spenser Avenue and Happisburgh Road.
Over recent weeks I have been there to see a film (a matinee performance), a show with Helen McDermott and a concert by the Norwich City Concert Band. Although these events offer excellent value for money, they are not supported as well as they could be. Is this because people are not aware of it or is there some other reason.
It is a superb venue with a very comfortable theatre, easy parking (both plentiful and free) and not too far from the town centre. The prices are incredibly reasonable when compared with other theatres or cinemas. They also have a licensed coffee bar.
They have now opened a shop in the town centre to make it easier for you to drop in and chat or buy tickets. If you would prefer something different to what they have on offer – tell them!
Joseph Ballard and his volunteers are hosting a large variety of shows both for children and adults, including a pantomime for Christmas and they could really do with some more support from the local community.
Television is great but how often do you say “there’s nothing on” so why not go along and give it a try. There is a saying that goes ‘if you don’t use it, you lose it’. Please don’t let this happen. Come on North Walsham and North Norfolk, let’s get behind this project and show some support. Ruth Kay

STAR PAVING SERVICES
North Walsham Table Tennis How to win a local derby
In the Premier division of the Star Paving Services North Norfolk Table Tennis League, NWSCD’s Ray Howe, Joe Kirkup and Philip Stone hosted NWSCB’s Dennis Elliott, Simon Halliday and Paul Price. Halliday beat both Kirkup and Stone in five but three missed set-points in the third proved critical as he was beaten in four by maximum man Howe who also saved two match-points as he edged out Elliott 13-11 in the fifth. Stone came back from 4-10 adrift in the second as he beat Price 12-10, 14-12, 11-8 while Kirkup took his third match-point to defeat Elliott in four. Sharp shooting at vital times saw Price to a win in four against Kirkup, however Stone sealed the win for NWSCD in the final singles in four against a frustrated Elliott. Howe and Kirkup had chances to take a two sets lead in the doubles, but Halliday and Price won the second 15-13 – although their attempt at a chest bump celebration like the Bryan brothers in the tennis world left a lot to be desired! NWSCB won the doubles in four, but NWSCD won the match 6-4.
At Antingham, injury and other reasons meant NWSCA had to call on two players to play up as Howard Lupton and Richard Westgate joined regular John Vaughan to host Outlaw’s Colin Humphries, Rick Edwards and Steve Patterson. Humphries had a chance to take the opener the distance, but served off the table at 10-9 in the fourth before being edged out by Vaughan 14-12. Patterson took a brace – in four against Vaughan, however Lupton controlled his three singles winning each in straight. A 5-1 lead in the decider helped Edwards beat Westgate, but with the score at 4-3 in NWSCA’s favour Westgate then beat Humphries from two down. Vaughan won the final singles in five against Edwards and then teamed up with Lupton for a doubles win in four against Humphries and Patterson as NWSCA won the match 7-3. Also in the division, NWSCA won a derby against NWSCB 9-1 while NWSCD drew their match with Sharks.

Charity Walk for Dog Rescue
Animal Magic Dog Club’s Catherine De la Haye accompanied by Grace and Honey raised a staggering £868 when they walked the Norfolk Coastal Path in aid of Portuguese dog rescue Cadela Carlota.
Whilst holidaying in Portugal at the start of this year Catherine spent three days working alongside the rescue volunteers and assisted on a call out to collect a litter of abandoned puppies.
One of these little pups was Grace. She stole Catherine’s heart and arrangements were made for her to travel to the UK to join Catherine’s canine family.
On a very wet and windy day in October they set off from Hunstanton to start the 42 mile walk to Cromer. Three days later and despite the bad weather, Catherine, Grace and Honey arrived in Cromer.
The trio completed the walk in twenty hours through heavy rain and high winds to arrive in Cromer to a blue sky and sunshine where they enjoyed a well-earned cup of tea and of course a slice of cake.
the Second division, LCC Lobster’s Nigel Pegg, Tim Bending and Stan Munn hosted NWSCF’s Phil Mole, Brenda Baldock and Edna Stone. For LCC, Munn took a brace and Pegg beat Baldock from two down. Stone beat Pegg in straight and took a brace while Mole took a maximum, edging Munn 12-10 in the third. Baldock’s experience came through in straight against Bending and she teamed up with Mole for a doubles win in four as NWSCF won 7-3. The following week a different NWSCF team of Carrie Last, Andrew Weston and Stan Baldock won 10-0 against a two woman Mundesley B team. Meanwhile in the First division, there were contrasting results for NWSCE against the two Cromer teams as they won 10-0 at home to Dropshots but lost out 7-3 away to Crosscourts while Barracudas beat NWSCC 6-4.
