NORTH WALSHAM & BRADFIELD FLOWER CLUB
Following a well-attended AGM in February the Club began its new year on 26 March with a lovely demonstration by Jenni Baker from Harleston entitled ‘Whiskers On Kittens’.
Rachel Francis from the Big C joined us for the afternoon and was given a cheque for £820 from Club Chairman Jennifer Adcock. The money had been raised during last year, mainly from the sale of Christmas wreaths in December.
This year, the Club will be raising funds to support a new steering committee being set up in order to make North Walsham a "Dementia Friendly" town.
We have an Open Meeting on Thursday 28 May at The Atrium to which all are welcome. Sandy Bailey, a National Demonstrator, from Hampshire will be on stage demonstrating ‘Fabulous and Fun’ starting at 2pm. The floral arrangements will be raffled afterwards. Tickets are £15, to include light refreshments, and are available from Susan Bloomfield on 01692 500440.
Our monthly Club Meetings, for those interested in learning/taking part in flower arranging, take place on the 4th Thursday of each month at The Catholic Church Hall at 2.30pm. Full details from Glenis Dillon 01692 404628.

Guests and new members are always warmly welcomed.
Ah, you, Snowdrop, who with green bullet head Have forced your way through cold brown winter earth, And succeeding, celebrate with bright, white joy.
We who have seen only the cold and brown winter, Smile with joy and hope. You, dear Snowdrop, bring dreams Of summer days and butterflies and singing birds.
Like a peaceful army marching you drive out Cold and grey, and leave a white carpet of spring Swaying in the wind, and blooming in our hearts.

Gresham’s musician achieves highest mark in Norfolk for music exam
Sam Aldersey-Williams, a music scholar at Gresham’s School and a student member of the Royal College of Organists (RCO) has been awarded the prestigious Saxton Noble Memorial prize for gaining the highest mark in Norfolk in his grade 7 music exams on the organ.
Sam, from Aylsham, has been playing the organ for over three years under the tutorship of Lawrence Tao, Head of Academic Music at Gresham’s, and has already gained an extensive amount of experience on the organ. He regularly plays at the school’s chapel and church services around North Norfolk and through courses hosted by the Royal College of Organists. Last year, Sam and fellow Gresham's pupil, George Jefford attended the RCO Organ Scholar Experience at Trinity
College, Cambridge and played on organs at several of the colleges there, as well as participating in choral evensong. Sam has also benefited from playing on a wide range of organs across the country from St. Paul's Cathedral, London, St Edmundsbury Cathedral, Bury St. Edmunds and Norwich Cathedral and plans to play on the organ at Wells Cathedral this Easter.
St Nicholas in Great Yarmouth in June. He also enjoys jazz piano, plays trombone in the School brass ensemble and jazz group and studies singing.
The 15 year old pupil is currently pursuing his interest in composition too. He recently premiered a song he had written called, On the Grasshopper and Cricket, a setting of the sonnet by John Keats, at a Music and Munch concert at Gresham’s Auden Theatre.
Sam playing the organ at As well as playing the organ, Gresham’s School Sam is working towards his Next term this musically Performance Diploma on piano talented pupil will take his GCSE music exam and will be playing the first movement of the a year early and plans to take his Grade 8 organ Grieg piano concerto at the Minster Church of exam later this summer.
Spring Celebrations at St Nicholas House
It may have been a short term, but it has certainly been a busy one for the children at St Nicholas House School in North Walsham. The pupils in Years 5 and 6 have been particularly busy and found the time in between playing netball and football matches, dressing up for World Book Day, helping at the Spring Fling and enjoying both an Easter Disco and Easter Egg hunt, to organise a Bring and Buy Sale to raise money for the charity Children with Cancer.
Year 6 pupil Daisy writes “On Thursday 26 March Years 5 and 6 held a Bring and Buy sale as part of the Cheeky Monkey campaign to raise money for the charity Children with Cancer UK. We designed posters and wrote a letter to our parents telling them about the sale and asked for donations and there was a huge pile of bags in Mr. Castle’s office. We started by sorting all the items and then putting price labels onto everything. There were teddies, cars, bags, toys, DVDs, books, cakes and lots of bric-a-brac. We set up the hall with some tables then put all the toys onto one table, the teddies onto another etc. First, the Nursery children came along to buy things, then Reception, and we had to help them with their money. Next, the older children came along and bought lots of things. After we had cleared up we counted the money we had raised and the total was £80.80. The items we had left over which were in good condition we put into a box for the next bring and buy sale.”
Well done to all the children who put in a great deal of time and effort to organise a highly successful sale - you can find out more about the charity at www.childrenwithcancer.org.uk.

Classic Bakewell Tart for a summer Spring afternoon with a cup of English tea. Do come in and see us soon!
It’s been an incredibly busy start to the season here at the Grove. We’ve seen our Spring Menu launch to great acclaim and the house and cottages have been full of holidaymakers enjoying the delights of a sunny March by the sea.
As we move into the season properly the vegetable garden is ready to explode with the fantastic fuit and produce that John and Ann Graveling deliver year after year. The only thing is preventing the multiple grandchildren from upsetting the seedlings as they propogate in the family conservatory!
This is a classic Bakewell Tart recipe, perfect
Weather from Ned Nimbus
INGREDIENTS 50g jam of choice 100g butter 50g ground almonds 2 eggs 100g caster sugar 50g flour Splash almond essence Pastry to your favourite recipe.
(add the essence if required)
Spread the frangipane over the jam carefully Roll out the remaining pastry Roll out the remaining pastry and cut into ½ cm thick strips. Arrange neatly in a crisscross pattern over the frangipane and trim.
Brush with egg yolk Bake on gas mark 4/5 for 30/40 minutes.
Line a flan tin with 2mm pastry Prick well with a fork Spread with your jam
Frangipane Beat the sugar and butter until well combined Slowly add the eggs and mix well Fold in the flour and almonds
Up until a week before Christmas, the weather was on the mild side but thereafter, and until the end of March, temperatures were below average, often with an added wind chill. The forecast was for such conditions, allied with high pressure never being too far away, which meant most low pressures systems were weakened off or steered away from us. This is exactly what happened with the stormy spell I had forecast for early/mid March, which meant only north-western areas caught a lively spell of weather, which was widespread in the north Atlantic.

Since 2010 our winters and springs have been on the cold side or very cold in respect of the start of the decade .There is still a lot of cold air in the northern hemisphere so the next three months will be influenced by this. April will see average, or below average, temperatures with rain/showers and rather windy conditions for most of the month.
May and June will see a gradually increasing amount of fair weather, especially late May into mid June - either side of these periods rain or showers and cool conditions will prevail . Ned Nimbus

Mothers’ Union
At our March meeting the speaker was the Rev. Paul Cubitt who came to give us a talk for Lent.
As this was also the Tuesday before Mothering Sunday, Paul took as his theme the importance of the relationship between mothers, or those who provide mothering, and their children and families. He spoke in particular about some of the significant passages in the Bible where close relationships are described, one of the most well known being the story of Moses in the bull rushes, which demonstrates the lengths that mothers will go to in order to protect their children.
Our next meeting is on Tuesday 14 April at 2.30pm in St Nicholas Room when one of our church wardens Nancy Heywood will be talking about the church tower.
Visitors and new members are always welcome for more details contact Ann on 01692 402705

Fat is not all bad
A three-dimensional face lift using your own fat Why fat?
Two main characteristics of a beautiful face are fullness and flawless skin. In this article we will discuss a procedure that helps both.
Fat is your own natural filler. Fat is not merely a passive ‘filler'. It is an active metabolic tissue and a rich source of various growth factors and stem cells. Use of fat to fill areas of volume loss is not new but we have new techniques and refinements that make it very successful. This procedure is very attractive if you are also considering body contouring or liposuction. Recent problems with breast implants have made fat transfer procedure attractive for breast enhancement as well.
What happens with facial ageing?
The old method of looking at facial ageing was based on a gravitational model: that all things fall over time. The new model of the facial ageing process focuses on the primary importance of how the face deflates and loses volume decade after decade. What was once thought to be sagging, has now been understood to be caused by facial deflation. A facelift without volume restoration looks artificial. Replacing lost fat results in a natural look.
What is fat transfer?
Fat transfer is the transfer of fat from one part of your body to another. A doctor must carefully harvest fat cells that are then injected to firm, fill out or plump up other body part like face, hands, cheeks, breasts or buttocks. This is also known as fat injections or autologous fat grafting.
How are fat injections different from commercial fillers?
There are many commercial injectable fillers such as Radiesse, Restylane, Sculptra, Juvederm etc that are available for facial rejuvenation. Each of these products has its own unique set of advantages and disadvantages. An ideal substance would be readily

available, inexpensive, long-lasting, natural-feeling, and would not cause adverse reactions. Your own tissue meets these requirements. Since it is your own body fat there is no chance of allergic reactions. Some of the injected fat can be reabsorbed by the body and more than one session may be required.
What happens during the procedure?
This procedure is performed under local anaesthesia. The process requires gentle fat removal using low-vacuum limited liposuction and the use of thin, delicate, non-traumatic fine tubes to protect the survival of each harvested living fat cell. The fat cells are then purified and slowly injected using a small syringe and cannula. Tiny droplets are placed throughout the tissues assuring that each transferred fat cell will have an adequate blood supply to achieve the permanent survival of the injected fat cells.
Facial areas that can be treated with fat injections include the temples, eyebrows, marionette lines, under eyes (tear trough), jaw line, nose to mouth lines, cheeks, chin and scars due to acne, chickenpox, injury or surgery. This provides a three dimensional volumetric face lift.
What will my recovery be like?
Patients who have fat transfer experience a quick recovery. You are advised to rest for a few hours after the procedure. After 48 hours you may increase your activity as tolerated. Most patients are back to work within 2 to 5 days. Refrain from heavy exercise for a few weeks. Some amount of swelling and bruising can occur. Ice compresses are applied for 24-48 hours to minimize inflammation. Discourage massage and excessive facial animation immediately following fat grafting. These restrictions are to prevent migration of fat away from the desired areas of treatment.

Thanks to cooperation between the Town Council and the RNW Youth Committee, and the involvement of the Royal British Legion, work will begins shortly on a project to uplift North Walsham’s Memorial Garden.
The first “work” phase will see the planting of a number of Rowan Mountain Ash trees to line the paths leading towards the Memorial itself. Subsequent phases will involve the digging and planting of a Poppy-shaped flower bed thanks to a generous donation from St Nicholas House School, work to improve the lawns, upgrades and repairs to existing amenities such as benches, and (with the expert advice of the Royal British Legion) it is hoped to renovate the Memorial itself.
The intention ultimately will be to have a place of quiet reflection that the town can be proud of, and that will have seen cross-generational effort.

REGENERATE NORTH WALSHAM yOUTH GROUP (FROM PAUL OAKES) The Youth Group was born out of the "Regenerate North Walsham" committee that formed in November 2014. I was asked to put myself forward at the public meeting. I think everyone knew I was angry about the proposed demolition of the Youth Centre, sadly now a Car Park. The group very quickly gathered together a band of very talented like-minded people and quickly established a formidable committee, This I am privileged to Chair. At our first meeting we decided to ask our youth by way of a survey, What is important to them, What do they like about NW; in a perfect world what would they like to have in NW; plus a few other questions, This has taken time to organise but thanks to Shelly for her hard work, she is now collating the findings, Information very useful for our Town moving forward. Since that first meeting the group has been working on several projects: ■ "Art on the Boards" This is, Groups and Schools expressing through Art, their talents. The boards will be on display at the Children's Day 25th May. ■ “The Memorial Garden Refresh” ■ "St Nicholas Children's Day 25th May, bank holiday Monday" This is a joint project with The Youth Group, St Nicholas Church and Richard Sims (Mayor) plus many Volunteers. It looks hopeful that all of our junior and infant schools will be taking part in this bonanza of a day! some fantastic attractions on offer here. The event will be held in the Church Yard. Money raised will go towards the WW1 memorial Window in the end of the Church. Paul Cubitt is hoping to repair this for 2019 centenary. We still need funds or donations of prizes please? don't be shy! this will be a great event for our children and all for the right reasons! Cross generational project. The group is working hard with others here in North Walsham. We have linked ourselves now with the Town Council and are very happy that Councillor David Spencer has joined us as the Council’s Representative. We are also grateful to Joe Ballard for use of his Shop for our meetings and for his guidance. We have committed to working with Joe and Arts North Norfolk on his future events. We have more exciting projects in the pipeline but these are still work in progress. Personally, I see our youth group as help for any group in our town, happy to join in with any group to help with projects youth related. I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank our committee and friends for all your help and advice. I am looking forward to some exciting projects in the future. Thanks also to Nick Clancy our Town Clerk and our Town councillors for making our youth group welcome at council. If you or your youth group want to contact us about projects or just would like to get involved please Tel: Paul Oakes on 01692 409141 or email: pmoakes@btinternet.com

Aspiring young cyclist is given support by council
North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) is supporting a local talented 16-year old to help reach her goal of becoming a professional cyclist.
Circuit, 25 Mile and Hill Climb Champion.
16-year old, Isla Rush, competes in Track, Road and Time Trials cycling. She already has an impressive portfolio of accolades under her belt and is currently ranked 10th in the country of her age group (Youth A girls). NNDC and Place for People are supporting Isla’s training by giving her free use of the gym and pool at Splash Leisure and Fitness Centre.
Tom FitzPatrick, Leader for North Norfolk District Council said “The council is committed to showing strong support for athletes in the local community to help them reach their potential. I have been active in sport as a competitor, coach and official and believe it is an ideal way for young people to make the most of their abilities.
Left to right: Tom FitzPatrick, Leader for North Norfolk District Council, Isla Rush and Glyn Williams, NNDC’s Cabinet Member for Leisure and Cultural Services.
Isla’s accolades have included representing the Eastern Region twice at the UK School Games (Road inter-regionals 2013, Track inter-regionals 2014), as well as cycling for the Eastern Region at Road inter-regionals. She also holds titles of being the 2013 U14 Girls National
Glyn Williams, NNDC’s Cabinet Member for Leisure and Cultural Services added “The Olympics in 2012 provided a wonderful opportunity to boost aspiring athletes and for everyone to participate in sport across the country. It is important we champion local future stars such as Isla and help in any way we can to support her aspirations to become a top level cyclist.”
Isla said “I really want to thank the council and Place for People for allowing me free access to train at Splash. My training is invaluable to my performance. I started off doing triathlons and competitive swimming before I started cycling, I currently ride for a team called WyndyMilla. My goal at the moment is to race in Belgium in the Spring. In the future I would love to be a professional cyclist living in Europe and racing for a pro continental team.”
North Walsham Rotarian runs for Zambia Dr Geof Harrison, aged 56 from Millfield Road in North Walsham, will be running the London Marathon on 26 April. It will be his third marathon and he is running to raise money for an infants school in Western Zambia which is supported by the North Walsham Rotary Club and St Nicholas’ Church, both of which he is a member.
Money is needed to provide daily meals for around 100 children, aged 3 and 6, who attend the school, to buy essential classroom materials for the children and to install solar power as there is no electricity in the village.
In the autumn Geof visited Mombo. The village lies on the edge of the Zambesi flood plain where it meets the Kalahari desert. He took with him stationery supplies for the school and pictures drawn by children at Mundesley Infant School.
Since the visit, North Walsham Rotarians have funded a bore hole in the village which now provides the children and their families with safe water for the first time.
Geof is married with a 10 year old son, Bryn. At 56, Geof is already four years older than the average life expectancy in Zambia - a very salutary thought.
If you would like to support Geof and this worthwhile project, you can

Groveland Farm Shop, Restaurant & Garden Centre
Over the winter months the team at Groveland have been busy updating and refurbishing both the kitchen and garden centre, ready for the spring. Due to increased demand in the busy restaurant, the kitchen has benefited from a re-fit allowing them to develop the range of pies, pasties, quiches and other delicacies they provide for the deli counter as well as managing the busy theme nights each month.
Meanwhile the new look Garden Centre has been re-stocked with a large range of seeds, shrubs, bedding plants, herbaceous plants, trees and gardening tools. You’ll also find a wide range of food and accessories for your pets and wild birds. Darren, the new garden centre manager, will be in store five days a week and will be happy to offer tips and advice to help your garden flourish. Darren developed his love of gardening from the age of 6 when he
regularly helped his grandfather in the family garden, and eventually went on to study horticulture at college. After many years working in the horticulture business we are delighted that Darren has decided to join the Groveland team and look forward to watching the garden centre grow and flourish.
We provide top quality local produce, a well stocked deli and a healthy living section packed with environmentally friendly and allergy related products, all in a rustic,
welcoming and friendly environment.
If you haven’t visited recently why not pop along and say hello to the team - you’re assured of a warm and friendly welcome.
Sainsbury’s North Walsham raises £4350 for Red Nose Day
Sainsbury’s North Walsham is celebrating after raising £4350 for Comic Relief. Colleagues took part in a number of fundraising events during the weeks leading up to Red Nose Day, which took place on Friday 13 March.
Activities included silly games with doughnuts, a tombola, dressing up, and some of the night shift walked from the store down paths and country lanes through Blickling Park and the grounds of Fellbigg Hall to Cromer on Sunday 15 March. Three of the walkers had worked the night before they set off at 7am The store was pleased to have” Face Paint Me Happy” visiting on Red Nose Day and the artist, whose work is featured in the picture, gave all her takings on the day to the charity.
Neil Grainger, Store Manager, said “Our colleagues always go the extra mile (or 21 miles in the case of Night Shift!) for Red Nose Day, and this year was no exception. I would like to thank all of our customers who donated or took part in the activities we held in store. It was a record year total for Sainsbury’s North Walsham and it is brilliant to know we contributed to the impressive figure donated from Sainsbury’s to Comic Relief.”
On Red Nose Day, Sainsbury’s announced it had raised £11.5 million for the charity with additional funds yet to be collected.

President Kim welcomed members and guests to our March Birthday meeting and invited us all to sing Happy Birthday to an accompaniment by our entertainers for the evening, David and John.
Non-stop songs and music from the 50s, 60s, and 70s, Elvis, The Everly Brothers and many other familiar favourites followed and the audience all participated with toes tapping and hands clapping, hand jive and some chorus sing-along. Thank you both for a very enjoyable and fun birthday evening celebration.

A Chaplain at Cromer? I thought I saw one …
Well, maybe it was me! I am Janet Stewart, part time Chaplain at NNUH and Cromer Hospital. I usually come in on a Friday morning but days can be variable and staff can contact me if needed. The Dialysis Unit is a special port of call and patients are always a privilege to meet.
The canteen is another special place – with opportunities to talk and perhaps be an encouragement to others through difficult times.
One initial query was ‘Why do you wear a green shirt?’ Answer ‘Because I haven’t ironed the blue one!’ But that question and others sometimes show a desire to share. Waiting on one’s own can be lonely and talking about anything, whether pets, NCFC or God, are all equally important.
So maybe I will see you around, look out for the clerical collar and the coloured shirt! Rev Janet Stewart

One of the main aims of Cats Protection is to encourage people to have their cats neutered and, as you are already aware, we are fully committed to this. We recently received a bequest from one of our supporters and decided to use this to run a neutering campaign for a limited period from Monday 20 April. To qualify for help the person applying will need to live in Domino the postcode areas we cover and be on benefits or low income. The vouchers will cost £5 each and be limited to two per household. You will need to ring the neutering line to check to see if you are eligible and Irene, who will be answering the phone, will advise you where to send the payment. Irene will also need to be given a little information about the cats to enable us to complete the vouchers. Please advise her of the cat(s) names, their age and also the sex of each one and which vets you wish to use. As soon as we are in receipt of the payment, the vouchers will be sent to the veterinary practice you chose. We will be using veterinary practices in our postcode areas, namely, The Bridge at Wroxham, Westover in North Walsham, Miramar in Sheringham or Glaven in Holt. Please allow a couple of days after sending the payment before making an appointment with your chosen vets to arrange for the cat(s) operation.
If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries.
If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively, you can visit
www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk
for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

NORTH WALSHAM PROBUS CLUB
‘People not places’ reflected the theme of the Rev Nigel Paterson’s talk to Probus members last month, when he described his recent pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela in 2013.
The cathedral, situated in north-western Spain, is believed to contain the bodily remains of the apostle, St James the Greater, and has attracted travellers for over 1,300 years. During the 12th century over half a million pilgrims made their way across northern Spain every year, along what has become known as the Camino de Santiago. It ranks, along with Rome and Jerusalem, as one of Christendom’s great pilgrimage destinations. Among the historical figures who have made the pilgrimage include, Charlemagne, Francis of Assisi, and according to Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales, the Wife of Bath.
The Protestant Reformation, the Enlightenment and European wars, suppressed the Camino, but it was never totally abandoned and saw a revival during the middle of the last century, now alive with up to 200,000 pilgrims a year.
The Knights Templars patrolled the Camino, providing protection, places of hospitality and healing.
Nigel, retired teacher, flew initially to Biarritz and began his walk from St Jen Pied Port, a small town in France Just north of the Pyrenees. His route included five cathedral cities, Pamplona, Burgos, Leon, Astorgo and finally Santiago, a distance of 550 miles taking 33 days
His day began early and usually finishing about four in the afternoon, at a hostel, or ‘el albergue’. The accommodation was often lacking in sophistication. A meal was often a simple ‘pilgrim’s menu’ found along the route. There was an occasion when Nigel found himself sharing a converted schoolroom with ninety others of varying nationalities. Nevertheless, it did provide an opportunity to share mutual belief and understanding.
Not everyone chose such an austere programme. There are ‘pampered pilgrims, who stay at comfortable hotels, but this does not detract from their sincerity. One was a woman who carried the ashes of her late twenty seven year old son. Another a German holistic vegetarian, provided much stimulating conversation.
The next meeting will be on 22 April at the Community Centre. New members are welcome.

Running for Break
work as a CBT Psychotherapist.
There I obviously came across many emotionally damaged people. You may well see me in my bright pink or orange top running around the roads and fields from Cromer to Weybourne, Felbrigg, The Runtons, Sheringham.
A few years ago I lost over 4 stone in weight with the amazing help and support from the North Waltham Slimming World Group and Karen Mason the local Consultant, writes Cathy from the Victorian Tearooms (a far cry and state from my youthful days when I used to compete in cross country and middle distance athletics for the County).
Having lost the weight I knew I needed a good way to keep it off so I jumped at the opportunity to run the London Marathon for Break. It’s one thing being slim, but much better to be fit.
This joint venture with Break Charity - changing Young Lives, meant that I could get really fit (again) but with an AMAZING goal at the end. That is to raise a huge amount of money that will benefit young people who have not had such a great start in life or received the support they so justifiably needed. That which I have had and been able to offer my children. Although I run a Tea Rooms now, I used to
The views and scenes I see on my runs are just staggering. I really love the North Norfolk Coast. Mind you, I have yet to work out the mystery of how a cow in the next field can seem adorable, cute, cuddly even. But in the same field the same cow can look fierce, threatening and most definitely carnivorous! I have altered my route a number of times when I have suddenly come across a field of cows. I become chicken!
If you see me give me a toot on your horn, and I’ll add another £1 to the fundraising. Or please pop into the Victorian Tea Rooms on Meadow Road, Cromer and sponsor me or buy a raffle ticket to win a Full Afternoon Tea for Two. Then sit back on Sunday April 26th,
relax and look out for me on the TV and wait for a wave from me!
There are 6 of us running for Break and I am raising £2,000. Break Charity uses your donations to provide professional and volunteer support for family members, a therapeutic support programme for children, a separated parents information programme, drop in groups for parents, school holiday activities, a young carers service, group conferencing for families and so much more…

Refurbished historic almshouse available to rent in Paston
There are two almshouses in Paston, on the North Norfolk coast. Not many people are aware that these, two very old properties run by a group of trustees, exist.
category of persons. Today there are almshouses for retired fishermen, miners, retail workers and a host of other groups, in addition
Founded by Sir William Paston (of ‘Paston Letters’ fame) in 1691, the cottages were originally known as ‘Town Houses’. They were for the sole use and benefit of the ‘poor’ inhabitants of Paston.
The majority of almshouse residents today will be of retirement age, of limited financial means and usually living within the vicinity of an almshouse charity. Almshouse charities are regulated by the Charity Commission and governed by locally recruited trustees. Residents pay a weekly maintenance contribution, which is similar to rent, but different in law, and less than a commercial rate. Benefactors generally founded almshouse trusts in earlier times to provide for those in need and often to cater for a particular
One of the Paston almshouses is currently undergoing much needed restoration inside and the gardens are being re-landscaped. This unfurnished cottage will shortly be available and consists of lounge/dining room, bedroom, kitchen and shower room, and has car parking space. The trustees are currently looking for a new resident for the cottage. They will have to pay a weekly maintenance charge plus Council Tax, water rates and electricity bills.
The successful applicant must be over 60yrs of age, be able-bodied, a non-smoker, and preferably living in or associated with the parish of Paston, but consideration will be given to anyone in the North Norfolk area.

to the elderly. Some were founded by City Livery Companies, many of which still retain almshouses, and there are also almshouses for families, the disabled and even a few for key workers.

after the cows on the family dairy farm while her sisters partied. Hard-working Eirian was assured by her parents Tegwyn and Mary that “you will have the damn lot one day”. Eirian gave her life to the farm in the belief that her patience and hard work would be rewarded and that she would take over the thriving farm and its pedigree milking herd when her parents retired.
Until she reached 21 she worked for nothing. After that she often received as little as £15 a day for milking the cows. If she complained about her treatment, her father told her “not to kill the goose that lays the golden egg”.
Both her sisters Enfys and Eleri left home to pursue other careers and for the past 20 years Eirian was alone on the farm with her parents. Eirian was shown a copy of a Will in 2009 which left nearly all the farm to her. Relations with her parents deteriorated when she formed male friendships. A family fight broke out and the parents began proceedings to evict Eirian. Eirian launched a legal battle for her ‘rightful share’. The Appeal Court found that she had relied to her detriment on her parents’ promises and thrown herself into working on the farm. She was thus entitled to a “beneficial interest” in the business in order to reflect her “suffering”
and the promises made to her.
It was ruled that the farm was worth about £3,800,000 and that an “appropriate award” for Eirian would be £1,300,000 for her to start a farm of her own.
The legal way of preventing this problem would have been to put in place a properly drafted Partnership Agreement to protect the respective interests of the different parties. This advice would apply to any family business. “This article aims to supply general information, but it is not intended to constitute advice. North Walsham Table Tennis
Five titles - two for Lesters - as Walsham players make all ten finals
The names of players from North Walsham appear in italics.
The 51st edition of the North Norfolk Table Tennis Championships saw a record forty-four players battle it out in the ten events as the six tables at North Walsham Sports Centre witnessed 146 matches with continuous play lasting over an exhausting ten and a half hours. In the first round of the Open Singles, Joe Kirkup recovered from 0-5 in the decider to beat Dennis Elliott 16-14, 13-15, 11-8, 6-11, 14-12. In the second round, he met Philip Stone who had been lucky to get past Laura Marsh in four. A net-cord saved a match point for Kirkup at 9-10 in the third and he nearly made another recovery from two down but Stone came through in five. Robin Thaxter started his defence with a win in four against Simon Halliday before beating Stone in the quarter-final 11-8, 11-9, 11-2. In the second quarter, Howard Lupton won his quarterfinal against Richard Westgate also in straight. In the bottom half of the draw Stuart Hook produced a fine recovery to win his first round match from two down against John Hall before winning another five-setter against John Welsh in the second round. Meanwhile Tom BaldockYaxley saved four set-points to take the first set against Paul Price before winning in four. Both quarter-finals were also decided in straight sets as Andy Beane and Baldock-Yaxley beat Peter Ward and Hook respectively. While Thaxter came from a set down to win his semi-final against Lupton in four, Beane had four chances to take the middle set of his semi-final, but Baldock-Yaxley took his second set-point as he won 11-9, 16-14, 11-6. Hence the same two players met for the fourth year running in the final and the story was a familiar one as for the third successive year Baldock-Yaxley battled bravely to claim the third set, but Thaxter won
in four. Thaxter won the title for the fourth straight year while Baldock-Yaxley now has runners-up trophies from the last five years. The semi-finals of the Open Doubles saw straight sets wins for Beane & Baldock-Yaxley and Thaxter & Darricott against the pairings of Halliday & Lupton and Stone & John Miller respectively. The final went right to the wire – defending champions Beane & Baldock-Yaxley had two match-points at 10-8 in the fifth but Thaxter & Darricott saved them – the second on a 15 stroke rally – before taking the next two points to claim the title.
Peter Ward continued Elliott’s bad day by knocking him out in the first round of the Veterans with a 12-10 in the fifth win, but Ward had no answers against Lupton in the final - however Ward beat Hook 12-10 in the third set of the First Division Singles final. In the First Division Doubles, Ben and James Lester survived two tough five-setters to get to the final where they beat John Welsh & Keith Beswick in straight. Carrie Last won the final of the Second Division Singles in five against Harley Dyson and partnered Stan Baldock to the final of the Second Division Doubles where they lost to Trevor Vincent & Derek Sidaway in straight. The Ladies Singles was held for the second year – Mary Sawyer did not drop a set in the defence of her title, although in a repeat of last year’s final Laura Marsh had two chances to take the first. The two handicap events were played to a new format where the total points from both sets were added together. Last and Dyson met in their second final in the Handicap Singles which started on evens. After taking the first 21-20, Last had four Championship points at 20-17 in the second but Dyson took the set 21-20 to force the only one point play-off needed in the event! Last had the serve, but

Dyson hit a forehand winner on the 28th stroke to take the title. Finally the Handicap Doubles featured five family pairings with two home ones making the final. En route to the final Ben & James Lester beat Lupton & Kirkup by a single point before winning the only other one point play-off of the day against Last & Eric Dolden. In the Championship match they had a three point start against Edna & Philip Stone with solid play from Ben and some cracking smashes down the line from James sealing a comfortable victory – their second of the day.
As ever, thanks are due to tournament organisers Chris & Pat Johnson and Derek Philpott and helpers Brenda Baldock and Mary Sawyer plus all who helped score as well as set up and clear up the event.
