headlining. The music will start at 6pm and continue until 10.30pm. Entrance will be £5.
Sunday 24 June will see the Funday running between 12pm & 5pm. Stalls, displays & live music throughout the day.
The Funday Committee are delighted that L Gray & Sons are returning with their Funfair & this will be opening on Thursday 22 June & then running alongside all of our events.
The rumours are true, a vehicle carnival procession will be returning to the streets of North Walsham!
It’s going to be another busy year for the Volunteers of the North Walsham Funday. After the success of last year’s events the committee have decided to continue with this format.
Friday 22 June will see the Family Fun Night with Arnie's Attic providing the entertainment. Entrance for under 16s will be free. Grown ups will pay £2.50. The fun starts at 6.30pm & will finish at 9.30pm. We are lucky to have the North Walsham Community Shop supporting this event.
Saturday 23 June Beer & Bands will be back with The Casemakers
Funday committee member Colin Jeary and main organiser of the procession said "It’s always been on the cards to try and return the carnival to the town. The swimming pool committee worked tirelessly to run a carnival for many years but when they eventually stopped there was massive gap."
There will be 4 categories of entry - these are walkers, small float, large float and business. The parade will take place on Saturday 23 June and leave the towns industrial estate at 5pm before heading down the Cromer Road, through the town and onto the memorial park via Farman Avenue. It is hoped that many of the clubs, businesses and charities in the town will come together and support us. Continued on page 4...

One local group have already pledged their support by offering to help fund
raise to make this procession a reality. Sarah Yendall a local fitness instructor, has organised a fundraising Zumbathon just so her classes can take part in the procession. "After seeing on Facebook that the Funday Commitee were hoping to bring back the vehicle procession, my Zumba® students insisted that we should take part. As soon as I saw that money needed to be raised to help make this happen we knew we wanted to help if we could so decided to organise a 3 hour Zumbathon®, invite all the local Zumba® instructors and have a party. The thing is we wanted to involve the whole community in this event not just those who attend fitness classes and after last year’s successful charity class with MP Norman Lamb, which saw donations of over £4000 from people who literally were willing to pay to see Norman do Zumba®, we knew we needed to reach out to brave community champions who would put themselves forward and be brave enough to learn something new, who would commit to taking part in a one song dance off if their colleagues/ friends/family helped them reach their donation target. Think about it, would you pay to see your teacher, colleague, manager, leader hit the dance floor and throw down some epic Zumba® moves? I bet there is somebody you can think of right now. We need those heroes to step forward and represent their workplace in North Walsham’s biggest community dance off and we need you to donate and help them smash their donation target of £50. Which school has the smoothest mover, which supermarket out manoeuvres all the rest, which uniformed service has the fastest feet? Come support your champion on the day and have some fun with us. Tickets will be £5 and money raised will be used to fund the return of North Walsham’s Carnival Parade. We will teach your champion the moves and it will be easy to follow so they do not need to have any prior dance experience. Dance off can even be performed in a chair so everybody really can join in" Application forms for the procession are available by emailing Colin direct at jeabol@aol.com. We also have a just giving page to help fund the return of the event, the details for this are www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/nwfunday

REGULAR EVENTS UPDATE
We are undertaking a review of our Regular Events page and would request that all clubs/organisations who would like to be included in the listings on our new page email details across to editor.nwt@rosevillapublications.co.uk by Monday 15 April latest. Please note that criteria for this page is that each listing is strictly non-profit making/charitable status.
North Norfolk artists get set to invite the public into their studios Hundreds of artists across the region are preparing to throw open their studio doors to the public as part of Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios.
The event, firmly established as one of the biggest open studios schemes in the country, is celebrating its 24th anniversary this year.
to give visitors a taste of what is in store.
The exhibition, featuring the work of artists from within the North Norfolk area, will run from Saturday 12 May until Sunday 10 June and will include a mix of traditional, contemporary and three-dimensional studies.
“We’d like to thank all of the artists for making this great event happen, and all of the funders who help support the Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios scheme.”
Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios (26 May – 10 June) provides the opportunity for artists to show and sell their work to a large and diverse audience. It also encourages everyone, from ardent art-lovers to the curious first-time visitor, to get out and about, see art and meet artists in the unique surroundings of their studios. More than 420 artists will be taking part this year across 241 venues throughout Norfolk and in North Norfolk 73 artists and four groups will be taking part across 78 venues including one school.
Visitors to the free event can see art in a range of settings, from traditional studios to churches, garages and garden rooms, watching art as it happens. As well as the hundreds of artists taking part, 16 Norfolk schools will be exhibiting and 15 Art Trails will be running, allowing audiences to visit a number of artists in a particular area, stopping at studios and local attractions along the way.
In North Norfolk Aldborough Primary School will be taking part and five Art Trails have been organised by artists participating in the scheme. These are North Walsham to Southrepps Art Trail, Sheringham to Thornage Art Trail, Briston and Corpusty Art Trail, Happisburgh Art Trail and Cromer Art Trail. Throughout the duration of the scheme many of the artists will be holding additional events, demonstrations and workshops.
Artists taking part are working in a diverse range of art forms and techniques, including wood turning, sculpture, glass work, papercutting, painting, textiles, jewellery, printing, ceramics and mosaic. Some of the artists are first timers, some have been exhibiting for a few years and many have been involved since the very first year. Ahead of the Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios fortnight, North Norfolk will be hosting a taster exhibition at The Old Workshop Gallery, Corpusty
from a variety of inspirational spaces – from traditional studios to churches, garages, barns, garden rooms and old factories. This year there are specialist artists and crafters in all kinds of printmaking, painting, ceramics, textiles, sculpture and much more. We encourage everyone to get out there and explore the county, get inspired, meet the artists and buy work directly from where it’s made.

Exhibition organiser Jill Hill said “This year marks the third time (in recent years) that the North Norfolk Taster Exhibition has been held at The Old Workshop Gallery, we have always been really pleased with the quality of the work summited and the diversity makes for an exciting, though challenging, exhibition for the gallery to hang. “We hope people will take the opportunity to sample, consider and be inspired by the work of our North Norfolk artists before deciding on their studio visits or simply take this opportunity to extend their Open Studios experience.” Rose de Lara, Administrator of Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios, said “Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios has been celebrating the diversity and talent of the county’s visual artists for more than twenty years. It’s a wonderful opportunity to see and meet artists working in a range of disciplines
Studios are free to visit and all details, including studio opening days, directions, Art Trails and additional events and demonstrations, can be found in the Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios brochure and website from early April.
Artist Amelia Mills, who is based in Walcott, said “This is my first year participating in Norfolk & Norwich Open Studios and I'm excited to be taking part. For many years I've been visiting other artist's studios during the event which has always been fantastic, so I'm eager to see what it's like on the other side of things.” Brochures can be picked up from participating artist’s studios, Tourist Information Centres, Libraries, Cafes and various art venues across the county from early April.

“A friend for life” is how Ronald Bloxham describes North Norfolk health made following a hospital stay, with Richard supports the partnership. “Ronald and Richard volunteer Richard Fry
Ronald was referred to the service through an integrated care coordinator from his GP practice to have social contact as he lived alone and also to support him to use his laptop to send emails and use the internet.
Richard applied to become a volunteer with Voluntary Norfolk’s North Norfolk Health Volunteers Service. He applied as he wanted to have that connection with an older person again after having such a close relationship with his grandparents who he has sadly lost. He also wanted to ‘give something back’ and find a work/life balance.
Following their introduction, Ronald joyfully reports that they have become “great friends”, quickly developing a great rapport. His partnership with Richard has helped him settle into residential care, a decision he

During each visit there is a mutual respect and a great deal of chatting about all sorts of topics. Richard describes his visits as giving him a “different dimension to my working week and it’s nice to give something back”. They both agree that they equally get something out of the befriending partnership and that it shouldn’t just be one sided.

Whilst there is a lot of loneliness across Norfolk and beyond, it doesn’t take a lot of time or effort to transform the situation for both the volunteer and the person they visit”.
Voluntary Norfolk is keen to hear from anyone across North Norfolk, who would like to become a Health Volunteer. NORTH WALSHAM IN BLOOM
North Walsham in Bloom was very saddened to find that the sponsor sign in the Church Cross bed had been badly vandalised.
The whole thing had been forced from the ground despite being set in a whole bag of Postmix. This added to the considerable amount of dog mess we found on the Cross when we went to work afterwards, has made some of us wonder why we bother. But of course, we will still bother, and once the sign is replaced – as it will be – we will get back to once again “brightening your town”.
This, coupled with further abuse from a certain individual regarding the Post Office bed has not made for a very good start to 2018 for all our supporters.
Still, the Post Office site is coming along well and has now had the webbing laid to stop the weeds and we hope to have the stone down in this next week.
We now have a website, NorthWalshaminBloom.com which should be up and running in the next week. We have not had a proper website for some years and this will, overall, be a new venture for us. All our news
NORTH WALSHAM & BRADFIELD FLOWER CLUB CELEBRATES
Sixty years ago the Bradfield Flower Club began in the front room at Bradfield Hall, home of Mrs Muriel Alston. As the Club grew in numbers, it moved to Antingham Village Hall and later to the Community Centre in North Walsham.
Today, as The North Walsham & Bradfield Flower Club, our meetings are held on the fourth Thursday of the month in the Catholic Church Hall here in North Walsham.
So, as we celebrate our Diamond Anniversary, we have lined up some of our most popular Area Demonstrators, a National Demonstrator at The Atrium in May and later, a Dutch Master Florist, who will be demonstrating and holding a workshop over two days in late October.
We have also planned a coach trip to the Ely Cathedral Flower Festival in June and Afternoon Tea for members at the Old Vicarage Gardens, East Ruston in late July.

will be on the website including what plants will be available when we have our Spring and Autumn replant. Our Town Collection and Fund-raising stall in June (Christine Boggis has agreed to bring some of her famous plants) and our Coffee Morning in September will all be on the website.
We are also looking into the possibility of having a new large square container on the Norwich Road near the Persimmon Housing development, this has yet to be agreed with Norfolk Highways Dept, but we are ever hopeful. We will of course be looking for a sponsor for this prime site when all the details are settled.
I would like to thank all our sponsors and helpers at this point as without all of you we would not exist, and North Walsham would not be the pretty town it is today.
Thanks
I would like to thank the three kind ladies who helped me at Pigneys Wood on Thursday 15 March when my young Golden Lab Bailey collapsed and died.
I am very grateful and couldn't have managed without your help. Thank you, Anne x

MP demands answers over delayed North Walsham communications mast
A new North Walsham-based telecommunications mast run by O2 Telefonica and Vodafone UK is still not operational three months after it was due to go live.
When Storm Emma hit Norfolk at the end of February, parts of North Walsham suffered a power cut which was exacerbated by the lack of phone signal in the area, meaning some residents had no means of communicating with failures from both their landlines and mobile phones.
The mast, which was given consent by NNDC in June, is set to boost coverage particularly around the Brick Kiln Estate. Many North Walsham residents struggle to receive a good continuous level of signal though they pay the same as the rest of the country for their phone plans.
Norman Lamb, the Liberal Democrat MP for North Norfolk, had previously written to Vodafone to ask for a clear indication of the project’s completion date. Vodafone assured him that the new site would go live in December.
Following further correspondence from Mr Lamb’s office in the new year, Vodafone UK and O2 Telefonica confirmed in February that there was a delay whilst BT Openreach, who control the Anglia Water sewage works site where the mast is being built, waited for network fibre cabling to be delivered by their supplier.
Mr Lamb has now written to the Chief Executive at BT Openreach to demand answers as to why the mast is still not operational.
Mr Lamb said “I’m really unhappy that it is taking so long. Many will struggle to believe the explanations given. Residents in rural areas like North Walsham pay the same as everyone else in the country for their mobile phone coverage but receive practically nothing in return. What’s worse, people were actually put in danger when Storm Emma hit because of the poor service they received. These companies need to get their act together and not only get the communications mast operational, but answer as to why their customers are paying for such shoddy service.”

Have you paid and displayed?
An extra method for paying at North Norfolk District Council car parks has been introduced.
As well as the standard cash and card payments, drivers can now use their mobile devices to pay.
Detailed instructions will be posted on the tariff boards in all car parks across the district. There are various routes to access the system, including an app, a QR code and by text message.
Cllr Richard Price, North Norfolk District Council’s Cabinet Member for Assets, said “We are very pleased to be introducing this system, which will increase the options people have when using NNDC car parks. The process of registering is quite simple and there will be clear instructions in each car park to help people understand what they need to do.” North Walsham Times 539 31st March 2018

Explore and learn about the countryside this Easter A Concert full of light
Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society return to Cromer Parish Church on Saturday 28 April at 7.30 pm to present a wonderful programme of 21st century choral music celebrating the theme of Light. This may be a 'modern' music concert but guaranteed to be highly melodic and no fear of dissonance! This promises to be an evening of beautiful music with a line-up of top class soloists.
Musical Director, David Ballard says "This might just be the project I’ve worked on as a musician that I’m most excited about. I don’t care if you like choral music or not - you need to come and listen. Great contemporary music, great soloists, and a choir who want to show you they love it. Be there."
Join our ranger team and helpers at Holt Country Park and Bacton Woods for Easter fun
Rangers will be on hand this Easter to deliver some informative and creative children's activities during the school holidays.
North Norfolk District Council will be hosting Fancy Dress Easter Egg Trails at Holt Country Park and Bacton Woods as well as a treasure hunt that aims to help children learn more about the different types of wildlife eggs. On successful completion of the trail children will earn an Easter delight! There will also be an opportunity to make a mini wildflower garden to take home. Fancy dress is optional, prizes will be awarded for the best efforts. Tickets are priced at £5.
Trail times: Tuesday 3 April , 10am-12pm, Holt Country Park Tuesday 3 April , 12.45pm-2.45pm, Holt Country Park
Thursday 5 April, 10am-12pm, Bacton Woods Thursday 5 April, 12.45pm-2.45pm, Bacton Woods
To book tickets, visit www.north-norfolk.gov.uk/book. In the second week of the Easter break, North Norfolk District Council will be hosted two more events to keep the family entertained - Spectacular snakes and amphibians & Woodland Explorers. Both events are at Holt Country Park and pre-booking is required.
In addition to the countryside events the usual programme of children's activities will be on offer at the North Norfolk District Council-managed community sports centres at Stalham, North Walsham and Cromer during the Easter holidays. All-day activities are priced at £10. To make things easier for parents, there is the added option of arranging early drop-offs and late pick-ups for just £2. Again these are available to bookable now at www.north-norfolk.gov.uk/book
For further details, contact Colin Brown, Sports and Countryside Manager, on 01263 516001.
David's enthusiasm is infectious and no wonder when you consider that the concert will feature a major work by Howard Goodall CBE who will be familiar to many as the presenter of many television programmes with a musical theme and as the prodigious composer of musicals, choral music and a multitude of television theme music such as Blackadder, Mr Bean and, possibly, most popular The Vicar of Dibley.
Eternal Light: A Requiem was originally commissioned by Rambert Dance Company as a choral-orchestral-dance piece and has quickly earned a firm place in the choral repertoire.
Also on the programme are works by the widely performed American composer Morten Lauridsen, the Norwegian Ola Gjeilo and the Devon-based composer of sacred music Graham Keitch whose works are rapidly becoming popular and frequently performed by choirs and in cathedrals around the world. This is a concert not to be missed.
Tickets £12 (£15 on the door), under 18s FREE are available now from Sheringham Little Theatre box office 01263 822347 or online at www.sheringhamlittletheatre.com

Nuclear Room and new Tornado Cockpit go on show at autumn, which brought lots of first time Radar Museum for new season
A restored Nuclear War Reporting Room, a Tornado Cockpit and a German WWII aircraft canon are among the exciting new attractions at the RAF Air Defence Radar Museum as it opens for RAF 100 Anniversary season.
The popular RAF Radar Museum, near Horning in The Broads, opened on Saturday 24 March for the 2018 season. The once top secret radar establishment occupies the site of the world’s longest continuously operating radar station and is the biggest museum in North Norfolk. The museum has doubled its opening times and will now be open Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday through to the end of the autumn half term at the beginning of November.
New this season is the restored Nuclear Reporting Cell, which tells the story of how the base was used in the Cold War to warn and track a nuclear attack and fallout if one occurred. The Nuclear Reporting Cell was formerly staffed by the Royal Observer Corp (ROC) and will have giga counters and fall out protective suits on display. It will include information on warning times of attack and monitoring and surveillance. It will also have information on the Dooms Day Clock used to measure the likely risk of a worldwide nuclear catastrophe.
VW VW
Also recently acquired is the German Dornier 217 canon retrieved from the Dornier which was shot down by a crew from 68 Fighter Squadron, based at Coltishall, on the night of 30 July 1942 over Salthouse Marshes.
A Tornado Cockpit joins the two other cockpits this season and will be housed with the Jaguar cockpit in the ‘hanger room’. The Tornado saw active service in the first Gulf War and the aircraft’s full history will form part of the display. Steps will enable visitors to look inside the cockpit and also to access the rear of the cockpit to experience the view that the co-pilot would have.
The museum will be celebrating the centenary of the RAF which was formed on 1 April 1918. The museum will have a timeline showing the important milestones in the RAF and Radar and the base’s own history. The museum will also have a number of special activities throughout the year to celebrate and commemorate the anniversary. The museum will have 3 special exhibitions this year, building on the success of its Soviet era art exhibition last

visitors to the museum, especially women and children.
Over the winter the museum has been busy doubling the size of its reception and shop area. This has enabled the museum to sell some exciting and unique new gift ranges and second-hand books. A new disabled access ramp has also been installed so that everyone can now use the same entrance.
Museum Manager, Gregory Hayman said ‘The museum has added another room to its existing 20 rooms meaning that we can have more exciting and interesting exhibits on display from our collection of over 10,000 items. We believe that we have things of interest here for everyone, from those who served in the forces to people who want to know about the part radar played in the Battle of Britain and terrifying reality of the Cold War and the threat of nuclear destruction.
The museum has also improved its offer to schools, producing learning journeys and materials that will feed into more parts of the school curriculum.
Says Gregory ‘The role that the museum plays in developing our offer as a provider of education materials is important in encouraging young people to think about careers in science and technology.
The museum is open from 10am - 5pm from Saturday 24 March and in addition to the regular open days, is also open on Easter Bank Holiday Monday and the two May bank holiday Mondays as well as the summer one.
EastCoast Artz
The EastCoastArtz Exhibition will be held at the Henry Blogg Museum Cromer (NR27 9ET) from 7 until15 April (closed Mondays) from 10am – 4pm.
There will be work by local artists reflecting life on the coast through painting, textiles and sculpture.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
When I first wrote this article, Bella was still missing. However, I was delighted to receive a call this morning to say that she had been trapped and, although a little thinner, was now safely home again. In this instance the cat escaped from its carrier on leaving the vets as the door had not been secured properly. As Bella was an indoor cat she was particularly vulnerable. Fortunately, someone living close by gave permission for the trap to be set in his garden. We find most people, especially cat lovers, are only too happy to help in these circumstances and, although on occasions, other cats, and even hedgehogs, have been caught first, they can empathise with the person who has lost their cat. We have helped lots of people over the years by lending traps to catch the cats and know how stressful this is for them. Like most escapees, it took a few days for Bella to show her face but, from experience, we find that very few move far from the place where they were lost. The owner is very grateful to the gentleman who helped by letting her put a trap in his garden, the second time this has happened recently. Let’s hope there is not a third!
Now that spring is in the air the kind people with the two colonies where we still have cats to catch to be neutered are now setting their traps again. One cat was recently caught and taken to the vets but, unfortunately, it had already been neutered, as was discovered on the
Hedgehog Haven
The mild spell of weather saw all the hedgehogs in the outside huts awake from hibernation. It's good to know they have all survived.
With this in mind, Luna and Happy were collected by their finders to be released into an enclosed area, where they have provided nest boxes and food, prior to releasing into the wild. Henrietta arrived on 15 March. Luckily her finders knew she was small (350grms) and, with another cold spell coming, she would be struggling. She is eating well and should not have to be in care to long.
An update on Willow (pictured), as she is elderly and I have discovered she is also blind, she will be staying here with me. She is quite content and as you can see loves tucking into her bowl of chum (3 a day!).
I will be at North Walsham Garden Centre on Norwich Road on Easter Saturday and Monday between 10am to 3pm with hedgehog information and ‘Meet a Hedgehog’, (possibly Willow) - come and say hello.

Several of the cats taken in from the multi cat household recently Rosie, a very friendly little cat who have now left for new homes. As loves to play often happens there was lots of interest in Tripod, the three legged cat and, after having a dental, she hardly had time to settle before leaving us. Spotty, Darcy and Taz have also had interest in them and, providing their homes are suitable, they too could be leaving soon. This leaves Treacle a lovely friendly black girl, Arwen a gentle black and white girl and Gandaulf, our lovely white lad. I am happy to report that Gandaulf, as expected, is quite a handsome fellow now that his scars have disappeared. Four slightly older cats have also come into care recently. Rosie and Milly are about 7 years old, and Pepper and Archie, two lovely big boys who are slightly younger. Ludo and Leonard two young cats are also looking for new homes and, again, there has already been some interest in these cats.
If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 it (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign. North Norfolk District Council raises flag on Commonwealth Day
Chairman celebrates historic day with short service at NNDC offices
The Chairman of North Norfolk District Council Cllr Richard Shepherd led a short service to celebrate Commonwealth Day.
A short service took place on 12 March by the flagpole at NNDC’s Holt Road, Cromer offices followed by the raising of the Commonwealth flag.
Cllr Richard Shepherd said “I am proud for North Norfolk District Council to join so many Commonwealth communities around the world raising our flags on 12 March. Together we mark our membership of this important organisation of nations and our commitment to its shared goals.”
The event helps to celebrate the values the Commonwealth upholds, and the opportunities offered for friendship and cooperation with fellow Commonwealth citizens around the world. Commonwealth countries in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and Americas, the Pacific and Europe observe Commonwealth Day. Faith and civic gatherings, debates, school assemblies, flag raising ceremonies, street parties and fashion shows are just some of the events that help celebrate the vast diversity, strong unity and uplifting values that define the Commonwealth.

It’s been a very varied and unusual start to 2018 here at Westover Vets, which unfortunately isn’t always a good thing.
Along with the recent paralytic shellfish poisoning there has been more toxins washed up on our beaches in the form of palm oil, which is fortunately less toxic and will hopefully be gone by the time we can safely let our dogs off the lead again on our beaches. Another extremely rare case we recently diagnosed was a dog that contracted Canine Distemper Virus. Unfortunately, the patient was too severely affected to pull through, but hopefully this loss will act to prevent others in the future as Distemper is something which can be avoided through routine vaccination. In fact, this disease which caused so many fatalities prior to the 1960s has almost been eliminated through vaccination.
In recent years, however, false evidence and anti-vaccination campaigns have led to a reduction in the number of people vaccinating their animals. In reality, vaccinations have extremely low risks associated with them, but the diseases we vaccinate against are often fatal. As a pet owning population we
16
have become complacent because we see so few cases of diseases like distemper and parvovirus, but in reality this is because effective vaccination has almost eradicated them. It is, however, important to realise that some viruses can persist in the environment for years and so are impossible to ever completely erase them, such as parvovirus. Other viruses are prevalent on the continent and can be brought in to the country via the relaxation in pet passport control and imported dogs and other viruses, such as Distemper, can exist in the wild fox population. As a result it is always wise to either vaccinate your dogs and cats, or at least to blood test them annually to ensure that they have adequate antibodies to the viruses. Here at Westover we use a vaccination protocol that avoids over vaccination by only using certain components every year, those diseases which do not require annual vaccines are only given 3 yearly, or when required. To encourage vaccinating patients whose vaccines have slipped we will be running a vaccination amnesty (where courses can be restarted for the price of a booster) later this year. For more information on the vaccine amnesty or vaccination in general please contact the surgery.

Aylsham Dodgeball Tournament Aylsham High School offers the Edexcel Level 2 Higher Project Course as an option subject. Last year’s group looked at the possible legacies of hosting a sporting event and planned, organise and led a dodgeball festival for the Aylsham Cluster year 6 primary school pupils.
This year, 6 students from year 9 and 10 decided to work as a group to further extend this idea. They focussed their thoughts onto one of the legacies highlighted the previous year, which was helping year 6 primary school students in their transition experience to Aylsham High School.
The project class have been conducting on-line research from educational publications about transition and have been questioning High School staff and students who already help in school transition activities.
During the year, they helped to lead sporting team
challenges at a year 6 induction day and helped officiate at a North Norfolk primary school swimming gala.
They planned and led dodgeball training sessions in each of the cluster primary schools, helping the year 6s to improve in their dodgeball skills. These were well organised and they were able to adapt their sessions to suit the size of school hall, the number of students in a class and the ability of the students. The High School students were also able to purchase 3 dodgeballs for each cluster primary schools. Then on Tuesday 6 March, after many
meetings and much preparation, they hosted the Aylsham Cluster year 6 dodgeball tournament with 80 students from 6 primary schools attending. The teams competed in a round robin tournament. Additional sports leaders from the GCSE Physical Education class helped to officiate each of the games, ensuring that the games ran smoothly. The standard of play was exceptional. The winning teams this year were in 1st place Colby School, in 2nd place Aldborough and in 3rd place Erpingham. Each team took away medals, trophies and certificates.
It is now hoped that this tournament will become an annual event, adding to the many activities provided by the Aylsham Schools in order to help year 6 students feel confident about their move to year 7.
Grow your own talent : Apprenticeship workshop to highlight benefits for businesses Spotlight on funding and training opportunities at North Norfolk District Council-run event
business as well as helping boost the skills level of the local economy.”
Apprenticeships can play a key role in helping a business grow, as well as improving the overall skills level across the district. Training providers will be at next month’s event, and businesses will be able to learn about the funding opportunities available to them.
Attendance at the workshop is free, and light refreshments will be available. To book a place at this event, email economic.growth@north-norfolk.gov.uk or call 01263 516331.
The opportunities available for businesses that want to nurture fresh talent will be outlined at a free apprenticeships workshop to be hosted by North Norfolk District Council.
The event will be held at the Atrium, North Walsham, on Wednesday 25 April 25 4pm-6pm. Training providers will be able to give information on a range of qualifications, including business administration, digital marketing, construction skills and food production.
Cllr Nigel Dixon, NNDC Portfolio Holder for Economic Development & Business, said “This is a ‘must do’ event for businesses of all sizes and across all sectors which have staffing and recruiting problems or are aspiring to include apprentices in the mix of their workforce. It will be an excellent chance to learn about the opportunities available to them, how to progress them and ways to share best practice. Many businesses – particularly smaller businesses – think that taking on apprentices is not for them. Some have worries about the cost or the time they need to spend with their apprentices, and others think ‘What’s in it for me?’ There are also sometimes worries about all the paperwork and administration that needs to be done, but that’s what training providers are for. “This workshop will address all these issues and will look at the funding opportunities that exist, and show how an apprenticeship can benefit your
Snow Day
A white calm greets the sunrise, a blanket of icy chill, Gardens looking beautiful as snow frames each window sill. Slowly the unusual chill stirs each sleepy head, And a cautious testing toe creeps out of every bed. Something feels different, something feels strange, It isn’t a normal morning, there’s been a funny change. The window reveals the reason why things are not quite right, A beautiful stretch of snow comes suddenly into sight. Panic starts to set in about schools, work and travel, The day that was planned out starts to rapidly unravel. Then a realisation happens, there’s nothing you can do, A calm sets upon you as you start to think it through. Smiles and excitement for an occurrence that is so rare, It doesn’t even matter that a bitter chill fills the air. Run out with a sledge, leave your wifi and screens behind, Fill a day with laughter and unwind your busy mind. Families pushed together making unexpected fun, A chance to make new memories as we sledge, build and run. Being given the gift of time is such a rare occurrence, Enjoy it while it lasts, it could be a while before a recurrence!

Walsham Sports Centre,
Playing sport in a league is such a rollercoaster of a ride, regardless of results. We learn something new in every single match and it can be such a mix of both frustration and exultation.
Our injury-riddled Men’s 1st team struggled away from home, against an unbeaten Besthorpe who look set to win the league by a fair distance already. However, in a completely different scenario, at home to Lingwood, our 1st team cruised to an easy 6-3 win, that should really have been 8-1, but for some silly errors that we will be working on to reduce!

North Walsham Table Tennis Three matches in three divisions on one night!
There were three matches on one night at North Walsham Sports Centre with each table representing a different division. In the Premier, NWSCB’s Dennis Elliott, Richard Westgate and Werner Zivna hosted Shark’s Steve Patterson and Steve and Matt Hudson. Patterson was firing on all cylinders as Sharks won 8-2 while Steve Hudson picked up two wins in four including a defeat of Westgate. The NWSCB player picked up a single in straight against Matt Hudson while Elliott took the other point for the hosts in straight against Steve Hudson. On the middle table, Richard Porritt, Stuart Hook and Phil Stone virtually wrapped up the First Division title with a 10-0 win against LCC Crab’s David Grimes, Char Edwards and Chris Taylor (playing up). Porritt had to work hard to win from two down against Edwards while Grimes picked up a set against Hook. Stone and Hook won the doubles against Grimes and Edwards 12-10 in the fourth. In the Second Division NWSCF’s Gudi
Scham, Sarah Tudhope and Edna Stone hosted Aylsham Norada’s Roger Crouch, Sally Homfray-Davies and Tom Mountain. For the hosts Stone and Scham took braces and both also took Mountain the distance. Tudhope beat Crouch in four but lost out in four to HomfrayDavies. Crouch and Mountain won the doubles in four against Scham and Tudhope to force a draw.
There were two matches for NWSCE in the First Division as Tom Wardle and Ben and James Lester firstly visited Gresham’s School B. James Lester took a brace with wins in three and four against Georgy Bezarshvilli and Bryan Lee but lost out in four to maximum man Ian Darricott. Lee took a brace including a win in four against Ben Lester. Bezarashvilli was edged out 14-12 in the third by Wardle and also took Ben Lester the distance. A vital doubles with some good tactical points saw the Lester’s beat Lee and Kieran Peters in five to force a draw. Andrew Weston took the place of
North Walsham Town Football Club
North Walsham lost the local derby on 6 March to an improved Cromer Town 3-2 although the Angels had enough chances to win the game. The defibrillator has now been installed and registered with the ambulance service. The football club would like to express its thanks to the community for its support in making this possible. Defeats in their last two matches have seen the Vikings slip to seventh with four games left. With 61 points they were two behind sixth placed Old Priorians. On 10 March they were leading going into the final quarter at mid table Old Haberdashers, only to lose 20 - 10, whilst a week later, with a much improved performance, they held Brentwood to 19 - 0 at Scottow. Brentwood have enjoyed a fine season losing only twice, averaging 53 points a game; they or Chingford are certain of promotion.

The second round matches in the Handicap Singles Cup have also taken place however a blow with illness striking at the last minute left a two man NWSCD team of Phil Stone and Richard Porritt to face NWSCA’s Tom BaldockYaxley, Andy Beane and Werner Zivna. Some free-flowing hitting from Stone saw him to a maximum but NWSCA came through 6-3. John Chapman played with brilliant patience as his maximum helped NWSCC also reach the quarter-finals as they beat Barracudas 5-2.

Eton Manor on 14th is the only home game, sandwiched between visits to Old Priorians and Colchester. The Raiders play at Scottow twice, Hadleigh on 7th and Thurston a week later.
Defeats too for the Raiders against Ipswich YM and Hadleigh. With six matches gone in the ten match Eastern Counties (EC) Shield they were fifth. The Shield comprises the top two sides
