‘That’s there some corner of a foreign field’

Covering North Walsham, Aylsham and surrounding villages in association with the Cromer Times and Sheringham Independent

Visiting the cemeteries of the First World War is a very moving experience and is especially poignant as we commemorate the one hundredth anniversary of the outbreak of war on 4 August 1914.

In the large cemeteries, such as Tyne Cot, row after row of identical headstones disappear into the distance. The headstones are deliberately uniform to demonstrate the common sacrifice made by all ranks, with no distinction between the graves of officers and men. The standard secular headstones are made of Portland stone with a curved top and straight sides. Each bears the name of the man beneath carved in a fine Roman alphabet designed by MacDonald Gill, the brother of Eric Gill. Continues on page 4...

‘That’s There Some Corner of a Foreign Field’

It was agreed that a regimental badge and a religious symbol – a cross or a star of David – could also be carved into the stone, together with a text if the soldier’s family so requested. Over those many thousands of graves containing an unidentified body the headstone bears the poignant description, chosen by Rudyard Kipling – ‘A Soldier of the Great War...Known to God’. The cemeteries are beautifully maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.

Although there was much disagreement at the time about the form and location of the cemeteries and memorials it was always felt that the war cemeteries should not be gloomy or sad places and the importance of horticulture was essential to the overall design. The cemeteries were intended to convey something of the character of England the dead had fought for, an ideal England full of gardens and beautiful landscapes.

As well as the planting of evergreen trees – Ilex, Box, Bay, Cypress, Yew and Juniper – it was agreed that good use should be made of the most beautiful flowering shrubs and plants to show reverence and peace.

The great gardener, Gertrude Jekyll, prepared planting plans for four cemeteries and it can be argued that they set the pattern for all of the others and that under the influence of Sir Edwin Lutyens the British war cemeteries became ...’the modern apotheosis of the secret garden ... there is the enclosing evergreen hedge ... masses of workaday shrubs of the English countryside – blackthorn, white thorns, hazel, guilder rose

and honeysuckle ... and in the soft borders where the headstones stand there are hellebores, narcissus, forget me nots, fritillaries, foxgloves, columbines, London Pride, bergenias, nepeta and floribunda roses.

Variety in height and the timing of the floral display are important horticultural considerations and low growing plants are chosen for areas immediately in front of the headstones ensuring the inscriptions are not obscured.

The absence of any form of paving between the headstones rows contributes to the simplicity of the design. Lawn paths also add to the garden atmosphere and are irrigated in the dry season when there is insufficient rain. In countries where irrigation is inappropriate or impractical, dry landscaping is an ecological alternative favoured by the Commission’s horticulturalists. There are separate planting schemes for tropic climates.

When many cemeteries are concentrated within a limited area, like along the Western Front and the Gallipoli peninsula, mobile teams of gardeners operate from a local base. Elsewhere, large cemeteries have their own dedicated staff while small cemeteries are usually tended by a single gardener, often part time.

There will be a lot of television coverage of the First World War in forthcoming weeks so watch out for the English gardens in the foreign fields. Bob Wilkinson THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER

WWI Commemoration This year, on 4 August the country will come together to commemorate the day when 100 years ago, Great Britain entered a war with Germany that would become known as the Great War.

Locally, the Parish Church of Cromer, the Royal British Legion and Cromer Town Council have been working together to mark the day accordingly.

Starting at 11am on 4 August, the public will be invited to gather at the War Memorial in the grounds of the Parish Church. There will be a service of acknowledgement to those who gave their lives from the town of Cromer. The service will be led by the Rt Revd Jonathan Meyrick, the Bishop of Lynn and the Rev Peter Herbert, Curate at Cromer Parish Church.

Local military organisations and other groups will be invited to participate and along with the public will hear the roll-call of those local men who died in World War One.

Following two minutes silence, those present will be invited to enter the Church where a candle of remembrance will be lit by Bishop Jonathan and for the following eight hours, a single guard of honour, changing each hour, will stand over the lit candle.

Later in the day at 7.30pm, a Centenary Concert will take place in the Parish Church. The

Cromer and Sheringham Brass Band will be providing the music and following their appearance at the Cromer Town Council Civic and Community Carol Service last December, the internationally renowned Broadland Youth Choir will be singing a selection of songs. Baroness Shephard of Northwold (Gillian Shepherd was MP for South West Norfolk for 18 years and was Secretary of State for Education and also Secretary of State for Employment in the 1990’s) will return to her town of birth and will be reading some well-known poems from the World War One period.

The concert and the day in Cromer will come to a conclusion at 10pm where it is hoped a young descendant of one of the World War One men named on the War Memorial will come forward over the next few weeks to extinguish the Memorial Candle.

This is the time that across the nation it is hoped that candles will be lit in homes to mark the hour when in 1914 Sir Edward Grey famously said “The lamps are going out all over Europe”.

As the concert is expected to be the main event in Norfolk during the evening, tickets will sell out quickly. Tickets are £5 and are available from Cromer Town Council, North Lodge, Overstrand Road, Cromer – 01263 512254. The email is admin@cromertown.org

Proceeds from the concert will go towards the War Memorial Restoration Fund which is aiming to completely repair and restore the World War One Memorial before the 100th centenary of the end of World War One in November 2018.

News from the White Horse Overstrand with Head Chef Nathan Boon

We are really enjoying our summer and have been very busy serving the many holiday visitors who return each year to North Norfolk and our loyal local customers who support us throughout the year. The White Horse car wash on Saturday 12th July was a great success and we are delighted to be in-

volved with Overstrand Together and looking forward to the Summer Fair on Saturday

2 August. It promises to be a really great day with lots of village stalls, childrens games, craft stalls and arena events. Our garden is ideal for families during the summer months plenty of room to sit and enjoy the sunshine while the children play on the bouncy castle and climbing frames and with terrace seating and garden tables it is ideal alfresco dining. We hope that you will come and suport our Village Fair and look forward to seeing you atv the White Horse very soon.

Nathan Boon’s Recipe for Chocolate Chip Cookies

Ingredients

16oz Good quality Chocolate, 2oz Salted Butter, 12oz Granulated Sugar, 4 Large Eggs, 1 Teaspoon Vanilla Extract or Essence 2oz Cake Flour, Pinch of Salt 14oz Chocolate Chips, 4oz Pecan Nuts Chopped and Toasted.

Method Melt the 16oz of Chocolate and set aside. With an electric mixer combine the Sugar and Butter, add the Eggs then add the Vanila, Salt and Flour. With the mixer still working the mix, drizzle in the melted Chocolate and add Chocolate Chips and Pecan Nuts. Line a flat baking tray with baking parchment. Heat oven to 180c then with an ice cream scoop or two tablespoons scoop the dough about 8cm (1 scoop per cookie) place on the tray and bake for 10-12 minutes. This mix is very versatile so why not try white chocolate and almond or milk chocolate and pistachio.

Marie Curie fund raisers are holding a 70/80s disco on 2 August at North Walsham Community Centre 7.30pm till midnight - all money raised will go to Marie Curie.

Marie Curie Cancer Care is a UK charity dedicated to the care of people with terminal illnesses. In 2012-13 they cared for 38,777 people.

Downton Comes to Mackenzie Hotels

Earlier this month the Dales Country House Hotel was paid a visit by a little piece of Downton Abbey with the arrival of 30 vintage Crossley cars.

being a great way of helping preserve these fantastic vintage cars.

Built from 1904 until 1937 by the Crossley Brothers in Manchester, these cars were widely used by the Royal Family on tours to the Commonwealth and there is said to be as many cars here in the UK as there are in Australia and South Africa.

The Crossley Register owners’ club are a regular visitor to Mackenzie Hotels having stayed at the Sea Marge on their last annual car rally. The Register has been running for over 25 years with over 140 members and offers a fantastic opportunity for fellow owners to meet up, swap notes and share stories as well as

The Dales Country House Hotel played host to many fantastic Crossley vintage cars including the Crossley 14, built with either a 19.6 or 20.9 HP engine, the Crossley Shelley built in 1913 and, being the oldest on the rally, the Torquay with its four cylinder Coventry Class engine & pre-select gear box (this car was entered into the RAC Rally). Also the Crossley 20/70 built in 1922, sold with a guarantee to do 75 mph on Brooklands Track and registration EE4255 being the sole survivor of this model and 20.9 being again the only one of its kind left with a 3.2 litre engine and road tested in 1930 with a top speed of 71 mph.

The Climax and Regis were later models. The Regis sports saloon, manufactured in 1936 and boasting a six cylinder engine, was the last car to be produced before the Crossley brothers concentrated their efforts on manufacturing war machinery.

Despite the unsettled weather the rally was a

great success stopping at Holkham Hall, Felbrigg Hall, Houghton Hall and many small villages along the way.

On the Sunday the cars took to the road to take part in a treasure hunt. It was a great occasion with the cars and the Grade 2 listed building of the Dales Country Park Hotel complementing one another perfectly. www.mackenziehotels.com

HAPPISBURGH LIFEBOAT STATION This year Happisburgh RNLI Lifeboat Station is celebrating 100 years of continuous service. The first station was opened in 1866 and closed in 1926, then in 1965 opened again until the present day. The RNLI established a lifeboat station at Happisburgh in July1866. The lifeboat house was built on the cliff top costing £188-15s-0d. The boat ‘Huddersfield’ a 32ft x 7ft 7in, 10-oared self righter built in London costing £240-8s-0d, the carriage cost £83-10s-0d and was paid for by the people of Huddersfield. On 23 January 1884 the Lifeboat capsized, whilst on service to the schooner ‘Edith’. The lifeboat was swept across the wreck but fortunately there was no loss of life.

In 1886 a Silver Medal was awarded to Coxswain John Cannon, on his retirement, for his long and valuable service. In 1926 the Station closed and the lifeboat was withdrawn.

In the 60 years of the all-weather Lifeboats at Happisburgh there were 3 different lifeboats ‘Huddersfield’ x 2 and ‘Jacob and Rachel Valentine’. They had a total of 15 launches. There were also 4 coxswains during that time. In June 1965 the RNLI established an inshore lifeboat (ILB), one of the first “D” class inflatable lifeboats. The first ILB No 72 was provided by Norwich Round Table. The lifeboat was in service each summer, from April to October, going to the aid of everything from fishing trawlers, fishing boats, swimmers, and, as time went on windsurfers, divers, jet skies and kite boarders.

The crew and supporters have always worked hard to raise funds to operate the station - the first lifeboat crew’s non-traditional calendar “Happisburgh’s Life Buoys” was successfully published for the Millennium with more of the crew seen than ever before!

December 2002 saw the lifeboat launching ramp washed away overnight by massive erosion, which meant the Lifeboat had to move to Cart Gap. This site was fully operational within three months and the boat was still in-service throughout the changeover.

October 2003 saw the latest

“D” Class (IB1) lifeboat arrive at Happisburgh named “Spirit of Berkhamsted”. The naming ceremony was held in Berkhamsted as that RNLI branch had raised the funds for this boat and won awards for doing so in such a short ti me. The largest rescue of people happened on 18 August 2007 when nine divers were overdue 3.5 miles off Happisburgh. Cromer and Sheringham lifeboats together with a helicopter were also called. Happisburgh found the nine divers returning seven ashore with Sheringham landing the other two. 2009 saw Happisburgh Lifeboat move forward again with a two-year trial of an “Atlantic 75 B Class” lifeboat working with our present “D” Class boat.

In 1994 the “D” class lifeboat had the service time extended from summer - daylight only to 24/7 all year round.

One of the largest rescues the station was involved in, working with many other lifeboats, helicopters and other agencies was on 11 November 1996, when the tug “Beaver 2” capsized with one crewman being recovered and transferred ashore to a waiting ambulance, but there was unfortunately the loss of one life. Over the years the boathouse has been improved. On 13 September 1994 a new “D” class ILB was placed on service – D-327 “Colin Martin” in memory of a local man who lost his life in a tragic accident.

Church Fete to preserve an Icon

St Nicholas Church is a major landmark in North Walsham. It is the largest parish church in Norfolk (after St Nicholas, Great Yarmouth) and evidences the great wealth brought to the town by the woollen industry in the later middle ages.

Among the treasures to be found in the church is the tomb of Sir William Paston (d1610) the founder of the Paston School in North Walsham in 1606 – now the highly successful Paston Sixth Form College.

For almost three hundred years the ruined tower has been a “trade mark” of the town seen from road and train alike. It is now in desperate need of repair to prevent further collapse.

The church’s annual fete on Saturday 9 August from 9am to 1pm provides a wonderful opportunity to support this work and so ensure that this iconic feature of the town is preserved.

There will be light refreshments, tombola, brica-brac, books, nearly new, bling, electrical etc buy a bargain and help save the tower! There is ample parking in Vicarage Road car park behind the church.

Just after the completion of building work in 1381, the church was the site of a gruesome massacre of supporters of the Peasants’ Revolt who had taken refuge inside the church after a battle near the town. Although they claimed sanctuary they were put to the sword by Bishop Dispenser who claimed that the church building had still to be re-consecrated after the rebuilding.

A UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY TO SEE ‘BOATS AT BAYFIELD’

Bayfield Hall is a stunning 18th Century Country House set in its own Repton-styled park in the heart of one of the most beautiful parts of Norfolk, 2 miles from the coast (Bayfield Hall, Holt, Norfolk, NR25 7JN www.bayfieldhall.com) where Robin Combe, also Patron of Rescue Wooden Boats, is generously hosting this event on 6 August from 4pm until 8pm in aid of the RNLI and Rescue Wooden Boats.

The highlight will be an Auction of opportunity to participate in a historic voyage to Dunkirk in May 2015.

The wooden lifeboat Lucy Lavers will re-make the voyage during which she rescued many troops from the Dunkirk beaches in 1940. She was the reserve lifeboat at Aldeburgh and then at Wells and Sheringham and is being restored to her original condition at Stiffkey by Rescue Wooden Boats.

In May 2015 she will set out from Wells to return in stages to Dunkirk and then make the return trip (after which she will give trips afloat in Wells).

We are auctioning ONE PLACE on each of the outward and return legs. You can also place bids by post before the auction on 6 August.

Other excitements during ‘Boats at Bayfield’ are: • A selling exhibition of Marine paintings by The East Anglian Society of Marine Artists who will be showing some of their recent work, particu-

TAKE IT OUTSIDE!

The National Trust is aiming to get 200,000 kids playing outside this summer as part of its commitment to connect the ‘cotton wool generation’ with nature – with special outdoor events taking place over the summer across Norfolk. By September the UK conservation charity hopes to have helped one in twenty of Britain’s 7-12 year olds break their reliance on gadgets and computers for entertainment, and experience the simple pleasures of outdoor adventure. To mark the official start of its annual 50 Things to do before you are 11¾ campaign, the National Trust is hosting more than 40 activities and events over the summer to encourage families in the Eastern region to experience nature. Events taking place include a host of dedicated 50 Things days, where kids can have a go at several of the activities on the list, such as bug hunting and making mud pies at Blakeney Point. There will also be some extra special events, including the Twilight Zone Nature Night Walk at Heigham Holmes and the chance to become a Rockpool Ranger or go on an Adder Adventure at Sheringham Park. Showing that getting outdoors doesn’t mean getting in the car, Rangers from the charity have also identified the top ten activities on the list that can be done in a garden or local park. Top 50 Thing activities to do in a garden or local park 1. Climb a tree 2. Roll down a big hill 3. Build a den 4. Run around in the rain 5. Pick blackberries 6. Plant it, grow it, eat it 7. Hunt for bugs 8. Fly a kite 9. Ride a bike 10. Climb a hill Comedian and actor Hugh Dennis who is lending his support to the campaign says “My most treasured childhood memories are of being in the outdoors so it’s a sad thought that kids today aren’t enjoying the experiences which we remember so fondly. There are so many simple delights to be had – and it doesn’t have to be a chore or ordeal to do either. Back gardens can be as much as a treasure trove for kids as the seaside or a local park.” Stuart Banks, East of England Ranger, commented “Not only does the loss of children’s outdoor play and contact with the natural world impact their growth and development, it also sets the stage for a continuing loss of the natural environment. “We want to encourage children to care about nature, so it becomes part of their life as they grow up and they protect Britain’s special places for years to come. If nature had a voice it would want us to do the same – we need the

Funny About Love

The seaside theatre’s famous summer season gets off to a sizzling start with this hilarious comedy, written and directed by theatre legend Terence Frisby.

While Sheringham Little Theatre is renowned for its diverse selection of theatre, film and entertainment, it’s perhaps most popular for its phenomenal summer repertory seasons which take place every year. These are a series of five plays which all star a rotating ensemble of professional actors – allowing audiences to enjoy watching the same actors tackle multiple roles throughout the summer programme.

This year it all gets going on Friday 25 July with the madcap comedy Funny About Love. Set in a seemingly idyllic luxury London flat, life is turned upside-down for Rosie after her 52 year old husband Piers leaves her for his pregnant secretary Larissa. When Larissa’s husband Darren turns up, he and Rosie plan their revenge including fraud and Piers moving back to the marital home with his mistress!

Team EACH Skydive 2014

The play is written by Terence Frisby, who also penned the worldwide smash-hit There’s a Girl in My Soup, which was turned into a 1970 film starring Peter Sellers and Goldie Hawn. The theatre is especially proud that Terence himself will also be directing the production, ensuring that his vision of the piece is authentically translated into Sheringham’s unique venue.

Debbie Thompson, Director of Sheringham Little Theatre says “This season is genuinely going to be a special event, and we can’t wait to welcome back theatre lovers from across the country to Sheringham Little Theatre. We certainly aren’t resting on our laurels – in fact, we’re rushing off our feet to ensure this season is of the absolute highest quality. Once you try it, you’ll see why the theatre is such a relevant and exciting Norfolk institution!”

Funny About Love begins on 25 July and runs until 30 July. Information and tickets for this year’s summer repertory can be found by visiting:www.sheringhamlittletheatre.com/rep or by calling 01263 822347.

Local charity, East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) will once again be holding their Team EACH Day – with the date and location confirmed for Saturday 13 September 2014 at Ellough Airfield, Beccles.

Team EACH Day gives thrill-seekers the chance to join other like-minded people in experiencing the thrill of an adrenaline fuelled tandem skydive while at the same time raising funds for EACH. EACH is a charity which offers care and support services to local life threatened children and their families. They have three hospices across East Anglia, including Quidenham in Norfolk, and have also announced recently that planning permission has been granted to build a new purpose built hospice in Norfolk.

The charity are urging all individuals who would like to take part in the challenge to sign up today, and suggest that it’s also a great way for companies to involve their staff in the ultimate team building activity.

EXHIBITION BY LOCAL ARTISTS

Rose Peasgood, EACH Norfolk Fundraiser, said “Team EACH Day is a bit different from a normal skydive because you are with a group of other people who are all taking part in the same once in a life time activity and raising money for the same local charity”

“So many people say it’s something that they’d really like to do, and this is such a great opportunity to realise this ambition and just do it! Not only will it give you such a huge sense of achievement, but you’ll also be raising money to help EACH with their services which make the most of life, no matter how short it may be”.

Ellie’s Love update

“All 10 of us completed our skydive , the other 2 are jumping in August. Ellie's dad Nick loved the experience so much he wants to Jump again.

It was mind blowing, breath-taking and a very emotional day. Thinking of Ellie & how proud she would be of us all.

We had a charity buffet & Auction evening that night in Kings Lynn, which raised a further £1,800. The next fundraising event is a barn dance for Ellie's Love on Saturday 26th July. Tickets now on sale. www.ellieslove.co.uk

Although we spend considerable sums of money each year helping people with the cost of neutering their cats, once again the “kitten season” has now well and truly arrived. At present we have several litters in care of varying ages. Some ready to leave immediately, while some barely have their eyes open, are being hand reared and will be with us for several more weeks. One little mum, barely more than a kitten herself came into care heavily pregnant, having been handed over to us by a concerned member of the public who knew she had been abandoned by her previous owners when they moved. Two more young mums came into care with their kittens, again having been abandoned by their owners and left to fend for themselves. One of these had been living in someone’s garden for a few months and was very nervous when she arrived. She has now learnt to trust us and is starting to enjoy being a cat again.

Other kittens have joined us from feral colonies and although the older ones have needed extra handling to ensure they are fully socialised, all are responding well. The mother of four of the kittens has also been neutered and blood tested for FIV and FELV so we know these kittens are nice and healthy. Three other kittens were caught one evening and spent the night in my bathroom before going on to their fosterer to be bottle fed - they were only about 2 weeks old at the time. We managed to re-home a mum and her four kittens from the same colony last year and will be returning shortly to trap and neuter the remaining cats, all

My Cat has arthritis, but lives life to the full

It’s fairly common knowledge that dogs, like humans, can develop arthritis, particularly as they age. What isn’t so well known is that most cats over eight have the condition too, often suffering in silence – but no longer.

Written by Gill Carrick, a Cromer-based writer & author, this owners’ guide is packed with expert advice, moving case studies and glorious colour photos, celebrating cats living their nine lives to the max.

CHARITY CONCERT SUCCESS FOR NORFOLK WHERRY BRASS

On Sunday 6 July Norfolk Wherry Brass Band was privileged to perform a Charity Concert in the stunning Cathedral of St John the Baptist in Norwich. The Concert raised over £700 for the charity of the Care for Clare School, a specialist physical and sensory college in Norwich. The charity is dedicated to funding and running projects to improve and enhance the education, wellbeing and care of Clare School pupils.

Their current big project is to raise the money to build a hydrotherapy pool on the school campus. The total costs are likely to be in the region of £300,000. ‘Care for Clare’ is the band’s chosen charity for this year and we are delighted to have been able to raise funds for this excellent cause.

NJQ AT FAIRHAVEN

The very popular Norfolk Jazz Quartet will be playing an afternoon concert at Fairhaven Woodland and Water Garden (South Walsham) on Sunday 10 August from 2pm. Spokesman for the band, Vic. Brown, said “we played at Fairhaven last year and it was so successful that we have been asked to repeat the event”. The quartet plays melodic jazz standards and music from the Great American Song Book and the Glade at Fairhaven is an ideal spot to layback, relax and be taken back to the days of the jazz and swing era. The line-up is Tim Densham (clarinet and saxophones), Peter Gregory (guitar), Liz Underdown (bass) and Vic Brown (drums). They really swing - four musicians who play what they love and love what they play! The concert is included in the normal garden entry fee £6.10 adults (£5.60 concessions), £3.60 children, under fives free. The quartet’s sister band, the Norfolk Dixieland Jazz Band also has the following public gigs in August: • Sunday 3: The Goat Inn, Skeyton, 1.30 pm - admission is free but it’s always best to book if you would like a table for lunch, 01692 538600. • Saturday 9: Sidestrand Village Fete, noon. Nominal admission charge. • Sunday 24: The King’s Arms, Reepham, noon. Admission free.

NORFOLK WHERRY BRASS

Calling all Brass Players Norfolk’s Award Winning Brass Band has Vacancies

Norfolk Wherry Brass is an ambitious Third Section Band based in Neatishead, Norfolk.

As a relatively new Brass Band only in existence for 10 years the Band has enjoyed numerous successes under the talented baton of former Principal Euphonium of the Dragoon Guards Band and Cornishman Andy Craze including being the Fourth Section National Champions in 2012. The inspirational combination of Andy Craze and the Band has resulted in qualification for the

National Finals again this year representing the Third Section of the London and Southern Counties Region. As an energetic and enthusiastic band with a great mixture of home grown talent from Norfolk, enhanced by a number of former championship level players who have relocated to our beautiful county of Norfolk, the Band offers a great opportunity to enjoy Brass Banding. The Band is currently looking to strengthen its position by filling the following positions: Trombone, Front Row Cornet and Soprano Cornet. Rehearsals are Tuesdays and Fridays at the New Victory Hall in Neatishead from 7.30pm to 9.30pm Please contact enquiries@norfolkwherrybrass.co.uk for further information or call 01263 823676. Council Leads by Example on Apprenticeship Scheme

Two apprentices in North Norfolk District Council’s (NNDC) Council Tax section have been rewarded for their efforts by being granted full time posts with the team. Brianne Neale and Kristian Cubitt both started an apprenticeship with NNDC in July 2013. The government-supported scheme aimed to provide them with an NVQ level 2 and Technical Certificate in Business Administration from Easton and Otley College as well as providing mentoring and experience in the work-place. Both are now reaching the end of their training and qualification and in recognition of how successful they have been, both have been offered full-time positions within the councilbased team - Kristian as a permanent Revenue Officer, while Brianne has accepted a fixed term contract to March 2015.

Kristian, 23, from Cromer, left school without any real idea of what he was going to do and worked as a labourer and in local cafes and restaurants.

“After a few years I realised that I wasn’t going anywhere as far as work was concerned, and I wanted to do something about that,” he said. “This apprenticeship offered me both an oppor-

Cllr. Russell Wright, NNDC Cabinet Member for Business Enterprise and Economic Development, said, “The council promoted the benefits of apprenticeships to the local business community at a very successful event at Davenport’s Magic Kingdom recently. I am obviously very pleased that we have been putting our money where our mouth is and offering apprenticeships ourselves, and even more pleased that this latest pair of apprentices have been so successful.

Brianne, 18, from Sheringham, decided ‘A’ levels were not for her as she was looking for a qualification that was much more closely related to the work-place.

“I’ve friends who have got degrees and are now struggling to find a job,” she said. “What really attracted me to this apprenticeship was that it provided practical experience alongside a qualification, and I thought that it would really help me to build my confidence in a working environment. I have really enjoyed it; the people here are great and I’m delighted I can stay on once the apprenticeship is over.”

Sean Knight, NNDC Revenues Manager, said, “In the past we have not been able to find suitably skilled revenue officers and have had to take on agency staff, which is expensive and can only ever be short-term. I am really pleased that we have been able to offer jobs to Brianne and Kristian, it’s no more than they both deserve.”

“The apprenticeship scheme is not only excellent for the young people involved, but also in terms of building their long-term commitment to working locally, and in building the skills capabilities of the wider north Norfolk community as a whole. I can only wish them the very best of luck for the future.”

Norman Lamb MP calls on Norfolk County Council to continue efforts to find businesses to create jobs at RAF Coltishall site

Earlier this month Norfolk County Council announced that it was seeking planning permission for change of use to enable one of the hangars at the RAF Coltishall site to be used for storage and training by Norfolk Constabulary.

Commenting afterwards, Norman Lamb said “It is good that Norfolk County Council is finally starting to identify some tenants for buildings at RAF Coltishall. However, along with this use, which would simply be leasing the building to another public service, the Council needs to

ratchet up its efforts to attract local businesses which could bring new jobs to North Norfolk.

“I would urge the Council to continue its efforts to identify long term business partners to use the buildings on the site, boosting the North Norfolk economy and creating employment. I know that Lib Dem Councillor John Timewell is working hard in his role as the Council’s Vice Chair of Environment, Transport, and Development to explore long term business uses for the site, and will continue to support him in this.”

A TASTE OF MUSICALS

The Coronation Hall, Mundesley is getting ready to host 'A Taste of The Musicals' performed by the Mundesley Players.

Under the direction of Tracey Loftus and the musical direction of Steve Fordington the Mundesley Players are going to be bringing the Coronation Hall alive with a range of songs from well-known musicals.

Along with some familiar faces we also welcome several new members. The cast of 35 are busy rehearsing many routines to bring popular songs from the musicals to life. The production runs from Tuesday 29 July to Saturday 2 August, nightly at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £10 and will include a buffet supper. They are available from Jupe, Station Road, Mundesley or by ringing 07503 297602.

Happisburgh lifeboat Station 100 Year Celebration

Happisburgh RNLI Lifeboat Station volunteers, both past and present, gathered at the Cart Gap Station earlier this month to celebrate the 100 years of continuous service in saving lives at sea.

Over 100 people gathered to enjoy a hog roast and drinks, looking at photos, history boards of the Station and reliving stories from the past, and seeing how things have changed over the years.

The evening ended with the presentation of a Vellum, to mark this occasion. This was presented by

Malcolm Vincent, a member of the RNLI Council, to Cedric Cox LOM who has been with Happisburgh RNLI for the past 47 years as crew and Lifeboat Operations Manager. Earlier in the day the Station was open for the public to come and view the history of the Station and look over the lifeboats and chat to today’s crews.

The Station Lifeboat Day and Fete will be held on Sunday 3 August from 12noon to 4pm at Cart Gap so come and join the fun.

Norman Lamb Welcomes Government Funding Boost for Growth in Norfolk

North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb welcomed the recent announcement of more than £80m of funding in 2015/16 for growth in the East of England.

Norfolk and Suffolk will see £10m of new funding for expanding high-speed broadband coverage in rural areas, building on the money that has already been invested under this government in the “Better Broadband” programme.

There will also be important investment in

transport links to the East of England, including for the A47, which links Norfolk with the Midlands.

Commenting, Norman Lamb said “The East of England growth deal will provide a real boost to the economy in our region, and help deliver important investment in superfast broadband here in North Norfolk. There will also be funding for skills in our region, to ensure young people in our region can access the best possible training opportunities to help them get on in life.”

In association with www.northwalshamdeals.co.uk

“For the first time ever, this government has linked up regional funding for infrastructure, housing, and other key areas of funding, giving control to the local councils and business groups that best understand the needs of their local area. This would not be happening without the Liberal Democrats in government.”

Survey Focuses on Helping People Stay Independent

Central Norfolk Clinical Commissioning Groups (CCGs) and Norfolk County Council are running a joint public survey via the ‘Your Voice’ membership scheme to find out how to help older people stay independent for longer. The survey focuses on ‘Falls and Bone Health’ and aims to learn more about what causes people to fall. It is also designed to get feedback on how and when people access health services after they have fallen.

Dr James Gair, North Norfolk GP and Falls Lead said “We want to hear from older people and their families about what we can do to help people live independently for as long as possible. We want to find out more about what is going on in people’s lives around the time they fall and where they turn to immediately afterwards. We also need to know what type of on-going support they need until they return to good health and full mobility.”

Falls can have a major effect on an older person’s quality of life and can mean the difference between being able to live independently

and needing residential care. However this is not just an older person’s issue. Dr Gair continues “Some of the factors that put people at risk of falling can start many years before, such as poor bone health from an early menopause or from treatment for prostate cancer. We also want to see how aware people are of this and hope to get people as young as 40 to take part in the survey.”

‘Your Voice’ is a membership scheme run by Norfolk County Council for anyone interested in sharing their views and experiences to help develop and improve a wide range of services in Norfolk. Members are invited to have their say on a number of services provided by other public sector organisations including county, city and district councils and clinical commissioning groups. To find out more visit: www.norfolk .yourvoice.co.uk

The survey is now live and can be accessed via the website or to request a paper copy of the ‘Falls and Bone Health ‘survey telephone the ‘Your Voice’ team on 01603 679343

Age UK North Norfolk Befriending Service

Age UK North Norfolk manages a Befriending Service offering trustworthy and caring volunteers to visit an elderly person in their own home to provide companionship and support.

Requests for a Volunteer Befriender can be made by the prospective user of the service, or someone else on their behalf.

We have a constant need for Volunteers to befriend the elderly, and welcome enquiries to join our service.

The Befriending Service also offers other activities for the benefit of the elderly. These include:

• The Keep in Touch Club [KIT for short] – a social club held alternate Monday mornings at Anchor Close Community Lounge, Cromer Road, Sheringham. It is led by volunteers who arrange speakers, outings and other social events • Cromer Pop In – an informal drop in every Friday morning at The Cottage, Louden Rd, Cromer run by volunteers. All are welcome
