Arts Centre Team Open Shop to Help Entertain Locals

Music, drama, cinema and the arts in the local area have received a major boost this month with the creation of a pioneering new charity.

Arts North Norfolk (ANN) aims to bring a wide range of entertainment, culture and arts classes for all to venues large and small throughout the district.

Heading the new venture is Joseph Ballard, director of The Atrium arts centre in North Walsham for the past two years.

The Atrium will still be used for large arts events – including cinema, concerts and festivals - but as a first move “back to the community” a new base for ANN has opened at1 Market Place, North Walsham, the former Dragonfly clothes shop.

Mr Ballard said “Our shop will sell film and show tickets, register people for projects and classes and we will even host smaller events and classes in the shop itself.”

Arts Centre Team Open Shop to Help Entertain Locals

Continued from front cover... Local artist and teacher Sam Robbins, chairman of the new arts body, said: “We are an organisation that has started with the fantastic venue of the Atrium and now it’s our chance to grow beyond the walls of the building.”

The first annual general meeting of the Atrium charity will be held at the arts centre, off Spenser Avenue, North Walsham, at 7pm on Friday 26 September.

The AGM will be open to existing and prospective members of the Atrium company and anyone else with a general interest in the arts or hoping to put on events in their village or town.

More details of what Arts North Norfolk will be doing across the area, and how it will co-operate with local groups, will be outlined at the AGM.

Already the Atrium/ANN team has fixed to run free weekly Bounce and Rhyme sessions and free monthly storytime sessions at North Walsham starting this month.

Earlier this year Mr Ballard announced plans to expand the North Walsham Christmas Lights switch-on, bring back the summer Carnival and start a week-long arts festival in the town.

For more details, or to get involved in the new ANN charity, contact Mr Ballard at ANN,1Market Place, North Walsham, call 01692 218060 or visit www.artsnorthnorfolk.org.uk

On Saturday 27 September ANN presents Helen McDermott and Adrian Wright at the Atrium in the musical show Flopsical! with all tickets £12.

NATIONAL BLOOD SERVICE BLOOD DONOR SESSIONS 25 September 2014

COMMUNITY CENTRE, NEW ROAD, NORTH WALSHAM

1pm – 3.15pm and 4.45pm – 7pm

Swap an armchair for a donor chair this October

As the first signs of autumn appear, many people swap outdoor picnics and day trips for meals at home and indoor gatherings. NHS Blood and Transplant is urging people in Anglia to get out in the cooler weather and get cosy at a local blood donor session.

Although overall blood use within the NHS has reduced thanks to improvements in clinical and surgical practices, hospitals and patients still rely on more than 7,000 people attending a donation session every day across England and North Wales.

It is important that vital blood stocks are maintained at all times, as red blood cells have a shelf life of just 35 days and platelets a shelf life of only seven days. NHS Blood and Transplant needs to collect blood of each blood group in the right quantities to meet patient needs and regular donors are crucial in enabling us to do so.

John Canning, Lead Donor Relations Manager for NHS Blood and Transplant, said “We are asking blood donors in Anglia to make an appointment to donate blood to keep stocks healthy throughout the autumn months. The whole process of donating only takes an hour or so and you will be helping to ensure that patients get the blood they need. Whether you’ve donated before or are thinking about donating for the first time, please book an appointment to give blood and save lives. You never know whose life you could save.”

Blood is required to treat patients for a whole range of reasons. It is used in accidents and emergency situations, during surgery and in maternity and neonatal care when either mum or baby need blood. It is also used as a treatment for cancer and for blood disorders, such as sickle cell anaemia.

You can register as a donor, find out whether we’ve got a session coming up in your area and book an appointment to donate whenever and wherever you are through www.blood.co.uk or by using our app on your Android, Windows or Apple device. To download an app for your device, search 'NHSGiveBlood' in the app store.

In general, as long as you are fit and healthy, weigh over 7 stone 12 lbs (50kg) and are aged between 17 and 66 (up to 70 if you have given blood before) you should be able to give blood. If you are over 70, you need to have given blood in the last two years to continue donating.

News from the White Horse Overstrand with Head Chef Nathan Boon

Our Christmas Party Menu and Booking Form are now available for the pub and we have produced a leaflet giving details of all our Christmas events and I am delighted to tell you that we are already taking bookings so if you want to be sure of a particular date my advice is to book as soon as possible.

But before we get to Christmas we have a great autumn to look forward to with new menus, and a few special surprises along the way.

Our web site www.whitehorseovestrand.co.uk has all the latest news, menus and special accommodation offers so it’s worth

having a look. The village is still busy with holiday visitors and we expect to see many of our summer guests returning for a short break with us in the coming months. The outside of the pub is being painted and repaired before the winter weather sets in and the clocks go back which I might remind everyone is on Sunday. 26th October so you still have a few weeks of lighter evening for a stroll around the village before enjoying an evening meal and a pint at the White Horse.

Eating disorder charity Beat offers autumn programme of workshops for families

Norfolk-based charity Beat, the UK’s leading campaigning eating disorders charity, continue their partnership with the Norfolk Community Eating Disorder Service, offering another series of Collaborative Care Skills Workshops this autumn. The eight free workshops begin on 1 October 2014 and aim to empower families and carers to support change and recovery through improved understanding of eating disorders. Practical skills for dealing with difficult situations are also central to the programme. This announcement comes as the Government has promised a mental health task force to improve the delivery of services for young people, highlighting the need for effective care in the community. Beat understands that parents and families are part of the solution and can play a significant role in the recovery of children, young people and adults. The workshops seek to empower parents, partners and siblings of people of all ages affected by an eating disorder to support them in the community, preventing

the need for inpatient care. One local mother said of her son’s recovery: “Eating disorders are complex mental illnesses, “Looking back to this time last year we can but the majorhardly believe that it’s possible ity of people he’s come so far in such a short affected make a space of time. Taking a set of Lambert & Butler cigarette cards from 1934 as his cue, Geoff introduced a fascinating cast of London characters and street traders from bygone days. Before recycling, there was the Rag & Bone Man, before sewer systems, there were the quaintly-named Honey Carts and before TV, there were Punch & Judy shows and street entertainers. There was the ice cream vendor and his “penny licks” of ice cream – with the glass container being returned to the vendor and just swilled out before being re-used for the next customer. .... unsurprisingly questions of hygiene led to the practice being banned and to the introduction of the wafer cone we know today. Geoff also talked about the Chestnut Seller, the Coffee-Stall Keeper, the Flower-Seller and the Pavement Artist who still survive today, albeit in Local, genuine, honest company. limited numbers and in differing forms. LLOYDS BANK COMMUNITY FUND - THE VOTE IS ON!

The 1st North Walsham Scout Group have made it through to the final stage of the Lloyds Community Fund competition – THE PUBLIC VOTE! We are competing to win a top prize of £3,000, but we need your votes to win!

We involve children from their first days as a Beaver Scout at 6 years old and foster their young spirits into Cub Scouts and then into Scouts. Along the adventure they become responsible young people and move into an Explorer Unit and can become young leaders who are a credit to their parents, the Scout Association and the wider community. The 1st North Walsham Scout Group is a great asset to the area, but we rely on free help from adults and tireless hard work from dedicated section leaders. The monthly subscriptions for the children merely cover the running costs of the group and so we have to raise funds in other ways for additional costs such as camping equipment, tents and essential maintenance for our HQ building. Our Scout Group is a really positive hub that brings together over 100 children in the wider community from various backgrounds at the same time as providing key life skills to our young people. The prize money would be an enormous boost for our children’s games, tents & camping equipment.

Here’s how you can vote: 1. SMS Text: ‘VOTE NWK’ to 61119 2. Online: https://communityfund.lloydsbank.com/voting/cf_org_vote_profile.asp? cfr=98C1ED to go to our voting page, click the ‘Vote for us’ orange button in the top right and follow the instructions. If you don’t follow the instructions, your vote won’t be counted. 3. Twitter: Create a new message with ‘#CommFund NWK’, your followers can then retweet your message to vote. 4. Lloyds Bank North Walsham: just pop into Lloyds and ask at the counter to vote for 1st North Walsham Scout Group The Lloyds Bank Community Fund was set up to help local people across England, Wales, and Northern Ireland, the Channel Islands and Isle of Man to have a positive impact at the heart of their community by giving grants to up to 1,400 local good causes in 350 communities. There are four good causes shortlisted in each community and Lloyds Bank is inviting everyone to vote for the causes they’d most like to support. Members of the public can vote for their preferred community group on-line, by SMS or Twitter, or in a branch of Lloyds bank from 2 September to 10 October 2014. The local good cause that receives most votes in each community will receive an award of £3,000, with the other groups receiving £2,000, £1,000 or £500 depending on the votes received. You can find out more about the Community Fund and 1st North Walsham Scout Group by visiting the Lloyds Bank Community Fund website at: www.lloydsbank.com/communityfund. Voting for the 2014 Community Fund is open until Friday 10 October.

tion of the tower. One of the features influencing the construction was that it should exceed the height of Cromer parish church. A significant date in the collapse of the tower is Ascension Day 1724. The local legend is that the bell ringers rang with such vigour that it dislocated some the masonry, causing further collapse of a corner in about 1835. The extreme vigour which was displayed was a gesture of opposition to the ‘curfew bell’ which was required to be rung at eight o’clock in the evening and four in the morning to prevent the possibility of fire during the small hours, a source of dissent to local inhabitants. Rebuilding was contemplated about 1900 when the Rev. F A Chase is quoted as saying; ‘it is not mere chance that there is this beautiful

Do walls have ears? The walls of St Nicholas Church certainly found a tongue last month when Nancy Heywood, presently church warden, gave an account of the church tower. Although the history is somewhat shrouded in the mists of time, the tower has been a local landmark for several centuries. The present church dates from the end of the 14th century, but an examination of the wall adjacent to the present tower suggests that the tower at least, was probably built much earlier. Work upon the existing building was started possibly during the last quarter of the 14th century, when Alan Wale left 40/- for the construc-

church standing in the very middle of the town. With the tower rebuilt and the church thereby completed, it would be a symbol that religion and the worship of God is the centre of our life’. Efforts were made during the last century to rebuild the tower but were frustrated through lack of funds. However, authority to commence work, known as a faculty, was granted by the local diocese. The total cost is likely to be in excess of £200,000, of which a substantial proportion has already been raised. There is still an opportunity to donate towards a ‘stone’ and for the donor’s name to be recorded. The next meeting will be on 24 September when new members will be very welcome. Ted Gadsden

St Margaret’s Church Thorpe Market back on the Exhibition Trail!

WANTED – ARTISTS IN RESIDENCE! A recent exhibition by a North Walsham group of artists illustrated just how an attractive venue the building is. A continuous run of screens at the back and along both sides of the nave can provide 78 feet of vertical screens. Table tops across the pews offer further effective display space. The windows can be blacked out if required and modern lighting has been installed. In the past up to four exhibitions by local community groups a year have taken place. The thought is that smaller private exhibitions could also be accommodated, using fewer screens and perhaps for shorter periods of time. The church’s exhibition facilities are freely available for individuals to show their talents in a very attractive venue. Please contact info@thorpemarket.org.uk for further details

Thorpe Market Church

A picture to gladden our hearts! The Unpaid Work Unit has spent three days cutting the long grass, raking it off and barrowing it down to the Hazel Grove. Church members spent time engaging with the young workers, boiling kettles and providing cakes. We found it a worthwhile experience and the young men seemed very happy to have people having normal conversations with them. They will return in October and the intention is to ask them to clear the Hazel Grove. The church mowers are still in dock, one is likely beyond repair and will need re-placing but the scything machine will enable us to keep on top of the churchyard for the rest of the year. Offers of help with the routine mowing are already forth-coming although it is a case of many hands make light work, so further publicity to extend the volunteer base will take place in the near future. Meanwhile volunteers have worked on the borders around the church and the seat has been painted. The borders look rather bare because some of the lavenders had to be removed because of old age but re-planting is on the agenda. Meanwhile the need is for volunteers, a posse of churchyard gnomes, to complement the current workers. Plans are afoot to paint gates, trim back over-grown hollies and buddleia and cut back the ivy on the walls. Contact info@thorpemarket.org.uk or 01263 833252. The churchyard is now well on its way to being restored to its former award winning glory. A regular schedule of services at 10am on the 1st and 3rd Sundays of each month is now in place. 13 North Walsham Times 455 September 20th 2014

NORMAN LAMB PLANS SPONSORED CYCLE RIDE TO RAISE MONEY FOR LOCAL HEALTH CHARITIES

North Norfolk MP and Care Minister Norman Lamb is planning a 100mile sponsored cycle ride around the boundary of his North Norfolk constituency, to raise money for a range of local health charities.

The cycle ride will be carried out over two days, on 23 and 24 September, starting and finishing in North Walsham. Norman is aiming to visit each of the local charities he is supporting during the cycle ride. Norman is also encouraging people who support his cycle ride to complete his survey on their priorities for better health and care services to help him campaign for improved healthcare in North Norfolk.

Commenting, Norman Lamb said “One of my highest priorities as Member of Parliament for North Norfolk has been campaigning for better health and care services in our area. Here in North Norfolk, we are lucky to have some fantastic local hospitals in North Walsham, Cromer, Holt, and Wells – all of which have active

“Friends” charities run by local volunteers who raise money to help improve the care and services they can offer. I am also particularly supportive of the work done by Break Charity in Sheringham supporting children with learning disabilities, and the national mental health charity MIND. I am really pleased to have this opportunity to support such a great set of causes, and the excellent work they do. If you want to sponsor one of these organisations, you can find details on my website at normanlamb.org.uk/bettercare. There is also a survey you can fill in to let me know your priorities for local health and care services and I would like to hear from as many people as possible.

Court sentence for 80 mile charity bike ride Simon Court is taking part in a charity bike ride to raise money for the charity that supported his family through the diagnosis and treatment of his wife, Jane. In 2010, Jane was diagnosed with breast cancer after feeling considerable pain. She was diagnosed during her doctor’s appointment, and had to break the news to her three children, one of whom was away at university. “It was horrible. She was in a room filled with people. I told her to grab a good friend and take the phone somewhere quiet.”

Jane’s treatment began with a lumpectomy, and later a mastectomy, but also underwent chemotherapy and radiotherapy. But Jane reacted very badly to the chemotherapy, which made her extremely ill. She required more medical attention, including out-of-hours doctors and anti-sickness injections. Jane and Simon used Big C Centres to sit and relax while she was in hospital, and to have their questions answered using the Healthy Matters Programme. Her treatments lasted for almost a year, and now her family are drawing a line under everything that’s happened, and are moving on. Simon and Tim, their youngest son, will be taking part in the Cambridge to Norwich Bike Ride on 28 September and raising money for Big C. Simon, a self-declared MAMIL (Middle Aged Man In Lycra) is excited by the 80-mile distance after finding a love for cycling. Tim will be taking part two days after completing the Newbury to London Bike Ride, also for Big C. The family has already raised over £1,300 for the charity, whilst Jane was going through her treatment.

Though the last few years have been tough, the Court family are now pulling together to help give back to a cause that helped them through their most difficult days.

This is the fourth year of the Cambridge - Norwich Bike Ride, and this year Big C are aiming bigger. This ride will finish in Earlham Park, over the road from UEA and the Norwich Research Park, where Big C have pledged £250,000 to fund the new Norwich Medical Research Building. This building will focus on finding treatments for many age-related diseases including cancer.

Big C are still looking for people to take part in this event, and ask those taking part to raise sponsorship along with the entrance fee to help improve lives of those affected by cancer in Norfolk and Waveney. Financial Advisors: Who to trust? Written by Helen Batten – Solicitor at Hayes + Storr

At Hayes + Storr, we are increasingly being contacted by clients for legal advice in relation to loss of confidence in their financial advisors. As in all professions, including the legal sector, there are good and bad people, but what should clients do when they believe the advice given is inadequate, not tailored to their circumstances or just plain wrong?

Complaint to Financial Conduct Authority

Firms and individuals can only conduct regulated financial activities in the UK if they are registered or authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) to do so. When engaging a financial advisor, always check their status in the FCA register, which can be found on the organisation’s website.

If you have already engaged a financial advisor regulated by the FCA and are unhappy with their conduct or services, then the FCA provides a service resolving disputes. You may wish to engage a solicitor to assist you in bringing your complaint to the attention of the FCA. The first step is to put your complaint in writing to the financial advisor concerned and ask for the matter to be investigated and for a written response. The financial advisor will have a maximum time period of 8 weeks to respond. If not response is received or you are unhappy with the response, you can then contact the Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS) for investigate the complaint on your behalf.

A complaint to the FOS is a free and independent service that aims to resolve disputes between clients and their financial advisors, but it is not suitable for every case. If you and your solicitor decide to make a complaint, the FOS will consider its content and ask the financial advisor for their version of events before making a decision. However, you should be aware that the parties do not have to accept the decision made by the FOS. Depending on the circumstances of the complaint, it may be more appropriate to make a civil claim in the County Court to recover your losses.

Negligence Claims in the County Court

A claim to the County Court is likely to be made on the basis of a financial advisor negligently advising a client to make an unsuitable investment, which has caused loss. The Court will consider whether the advice given by the financial advisor was negligent based on a strict legal test. The Court will want to ensure that the loss caused to the client was directly attributable to the poor advice given. The Court, with assistance from experts, will then calculate the value of the loss suffered. The aim is to put the client back in the situation they would have been in had the poor advice not been given.

The solicitors at Hayes + Storr are available to provide advice on the conduct of financial advisors and where their advice may give rise to either a complaint or a County Court claim. Discussing the matter with our legal professionals often assists in clarifying your concerns and working out a plan of action going forward.

Every effort is made to ensure that the law referred to is correct at the date of publication and to avoid any statement which may mislead. The Conservation Volunteers spearhead the last year of The Big Tree Plant

Free trees are being offered to communities across Norfolk and Suffolk to create new woodlands this winter.

The trees have been provided by the Government as part of Defra’s ‘The Big Tree Plant’ campaign which ends this winter. It brings together local communities and national organisations to get more people involved in planting and caring for trees.

Mark Webster, Health Projects Officer for The Conservation Volunteers, who are supporting the scheme locally, said: “A properly managed wood can provide a great habitat and food supply for birds, mammals and insects and we’re delighted to be able to offer trees, stakes and guards free to communities in Norfolk and Suffolk. These planting schemes will have enormous benefits for the people taking part as well as the local area”.

People or organisations wishing to apply for free trees should contact Mark via m.webster@tcv.org.uk or 01603 767 300.

MOTHER’S UNION

Reverend Rhonwen Washford our speaker in September spoke of her role as a non- stipendiary Priest within the Thorpe St Andrew Benefice and a renal nurse at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital and felt privileged to have been able to combine both her roles. She is affectionately known as ‘Mother Ronnie’ and knew from an early age that she wanted to be a nurse carrying out her training at St Bartholomews. She became a Reader in 1990 and following her vocation was subsequently priested. During her talk Rhonwen encouraged us to trust in God’s complete knowledge and care of us as outlined in Psalm 139, her chosen reading, and to be ourselves and concluded by mentioning her belief that ‘one ounce of mother is worth a ton of priest’ Our next meeting is on Tuesday 14 October at 2.30 pm in the St Nicholas Room when Mrs Anne Rose will speak about Arthritis Care. Visitors and new members are always welcome. For more information please contact Ann Herd on 402705 North Norfolk Hockey Club, based at Cromer Academy is searching for

female hockey players to join first and second teams. Now is a great time to join as the season is about to start. Training takes place on Mondays 7.30pm – 9pm and matches are on Saturdays. The 1st XI had a successful season (as North Walsham Hockey Club) last year, gaining promotion to East Div 1N and are looking to boost the squad after losing players to injury, pregnancy and university. We would love to hear from anyone who currently does or who used to play at school or college, is looking for a new challenge or wants to play at a higher level. All welcome! Members’ and Shareholders’ Day at North Norfolk Railway

Full details have been announced for the North Norfolk Railway’s fifth annual Members' and Shareholders’ Day, which will take place on Saturday 4 October.

Members' Day is our way of saying thank you to all 3000 members of the M&GN Joint Railway Society and all NNR shareholders, with free travel all day to supporters.

A special intensive timetable will be in place for the day, which will see as many Society engines and items of rolling stock in service as possible. B12 8572 and Class 31 D5631 will be in traffic, as will our Quad-Art Set No.74. Wissington, which will be visiting from the Mid-Suffolk Light Railway, is due to haul the Vintage Set.

The focus of the day will be on working to top up the remainder of the Y14:2014 Appeal, which currently stands 30% short of the target. We must raise these funds in order to steam our J15/Y14, on which much work has already taken place for the most full and comprehensive overhaul the engine has ever received since being built.

The Society shop at Weybourne will be open, as will be the Muddle and Go Nowhere Real Ale Bar Car. We hope to also offer visitors shed tours of the rapidly expanding Weybourne works, subject to ongoing construction works being in a safe condition.

We encourage visitors to join the M&GN Joint Railway Society on the day, to obtain free travel and to enjoy the benefits of membership, which include quarter-rate fares on normal service days and our quarterly magazine Joint Line.

Dear Margaret,

North Walsham is quite a big town but not a lot happens here. We used to have a Carnival – it would be good to see a Carnival again. It’s about time the younger people (say between 25 and 45) organise something. It would also be good to see more proper shops – we have too many cafes, hairdressers and charity shops. It takes a bit of capital to open a shop, if not how about a market stall? I’ve lived in the town for 11 years and I can remember when the market extended into the precinct. Yours sincerely, Richard Baker

Tickets Selling Fast for Sheringham Remembrance Concert

Tickets are selling fast for the First World War Centenary Concert on Saturday 8 November in St Peter’s Church Sheringham. Thanks to the generous support of North Norfolk District Council and Orchestras Live we are able to bring the world-renowned English Chamber Orchestra to north Norfolk to perform alongside Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society and Gresham’s Prep School Choir together with the popular Norfolk-based soprano, Rosamund Walton and bass Tom Stoddart.

This performance will include the local premiere of Patrick Hawes’ Eventide (In Memoriam Edith Cavell) which received its world premiere in Norwich Cathedral in July to wide acclaim being described in the EDP as an “ambitious and moving tribute to Edith Cavell - large choral and orchestral forces vigorously played their part in conveying strong emotions…….”

The work has been especially commissioned by Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society from internationally acclaimed composer Patrick Hawes to commemorate the centenary of the outbreak of the Great War and celebrates the

life, faith and courage of Norfolk’s WW1 heroine, nurse Edith Cavell, executed in Belgium in October 2015 for her part in helping hundreds of allied troops to escape occupied Europe.

The concert will also include works by Ralph Vaughan Williams, Benjamin Britten, Peter Aston, John Ireland, George Butterworth and Douglas Guest all of which will reflect the Remembrance theme of the evening. As this concert takes place during the Remembrance weekend which marks the centenary of the outbreak of World War 1 the audience will be joined by representatives of the British Legion and Western Front Association as well as key figures from our local community. The concert is presented in conjunction with COAST, the Sheringham and Cromer Arts Festival. Tickets for the First World War Centenary Remembrance Concert can be obtained from the Sheringham Little Theatre Box Office 01263 822347. Ralph is a truly lovely boy and is a great favourite amongst everyone at the Centre. He is approximately 6 years old, is a Labrador cross and appears to be about 95% Lab!

Poor Ralph came to us from another RSPCA Centre and, after a while spent with us (for absolutely no good reason), I did find him a lovely home, with a single lady who absolutely adored him. She wrote to me about him, shortly after adopting him, saying how much she loved him and "I even love the smell of him". I thought that was lovely, and she was so proud of him, it was fantastic to hear. She sent us a photograph of him all settled in, looking so amazing and I wouldn't have recognised him. He was being such a good boy, and was loving his new home and especially being with his new Mum. Tragically though it was not to last as his poor Mum suddenly became very seriously ill and was

admitted to hospital. Why does life have to be so cruel, to split him and his Mum up.....I could cry for them both. Poor Ralph was transported back to us, from Hertfordshire, and I imagine he couldn't believe it when he found himself back behind a kennel door.

We had a wonderful time in the enclosure with Ralph when I originally took his photographs, we had a lovely fuss with him and, at one point, when she stopped stroking him, he was giving her his

Back to School with Animal Magic Dog Club

Each season presents a different set of challenges to the dog owner. Many of us have battled to keep our dogs comfortable through the hot summer months by walking in the cooler mornings and evenings or splashing around in a paddling pool. Now that autumn is around the corner there are some new dangers to be aware of.

When I think of returning to school as a child after the long summer holidays I always think of conkers, they’d be falling from the giant Horse Chestnut trees in abundance.

But did you know that conkers are poisonous to dogs?

Another autumnal danger is the acorn, both are toxic, if swallowed whole could cause a blockage and if chewed their toxins could make your dog very ill indeed.

Dogs are naturally curious creatures and can be stimulated by the falling of conkers and acorns - if your dog is a scavenger it’s a good idea to avoid places where they could find these hidden amongst the fallen leaves. If you are concerned about your dog’s health at any time always seek advice from your vet swiftly.

Animal Magic Dog Club based near North Walsham goes back to school for the autumn term in October, offering a wide range of training for puppies, junior and adult dogs. For more information on the club and classes available please call 01263 720730 or visit our web site www.animal-magix.co.uk.

Autumn does bring some advantages too, bright but cooler days are perfect for getting out and enjoying a walk with your four legged friend.

It’s Alive! But is Beauty really in the eye of the beholder? and could this really be Frankenstein in Fakenham?

In this Monster Mash of comedy, drama and music, ‘Victor’ dreams of eradicating disease, ugliness and unhappiness from the world, but something goes horribly wrong

with his ‘unusual’ lab assistant, setting in motion a chain of events to turn Victor’s world into a nightmare! You can see ‘Beauty’s Legacy’ at Fakenham Community Centre on Friday 26 September at 7.30pm. This show is suitable for ages 13+

Confusion at Christmas

Neil Robertson, who lives in North Walsham, usually spends his evenings training for his next boxing tournament. During the day, Neil works as a support worker at the Your Choice Social Centre, in North Walsham, but at rehearsals he is a seven year old boy who is obsessed with the well known TV game, ‘A Question of Sport.’ Will he remember that he is in a nativity play, or will he start adding to the script? Another local man in this production is Neville Rowe, an ambulance driver from Trunch. Neville plays the part of Joseph, who gets stage struck and can’t remember his lines, or where he is supposed to stand on the stage.

mother and child!) Such misunderstandings are heard by primary school teachers every Christmas, some are very funny, some are just odd, but Tim Firth, author of The Calendar Girls has taken these priceless gems and written a hilarious play, called Flint Street Nativity based on a

Things are further complicated by the fact that no-one is sure of their lines or the songs they are supposed to sing.

It turns out that they are not entirely clear about the Nativity story either. One of the shepherds, played by Zoe, tells everyone that there was a “fat man called John Burgeon” with Mary and the baby Jesus in the stable in the Nativity story. According to Zoe, it says so in the Christmas carol, Silent Night. (Zoe has mis-heard the line, ‘Round yon virgin,

classroom of children, waiting to present their Nativity play to their parents. Their long suffering teacher, has to deal with the angel Gabriel wanting to be Mary, an innkeeper who is determined to ‘improve’ the script to make it better, the new child who hasn’t fitted in yet, the class bully who is in love with the virgin Mary and much, much more.

Needless to say, their Nativity play does not go according to plan, and the ensuing chaos is made worse when the class pet, a stick insect, escapes in the middle of the play.

The Cromer and Sheringham Operatic and Dramatic Society, who are celebrating their 100th year this year, are hoping to raise £500 for the BBC Radio Norfolk and the Salvation Army’s Tins and Toys appeal from this incredibly funny production. Flint Street Nativity will be on at the Sheringham Little Theatre from 15 to 18 October. Box Office: 01263822347.

NORTH WALSHAM TABLE TENNIS NEW SIXTH TEAM FOR WALSHAM AS LEAGUE GAINS DIVISION

The new season of the Star Paving Services North Norfolk Table Tennis League has recently just got underway and the summer break has seen the League grow from strength to strength as although Specials have folded, six new teams have joined including a new home team taking the number of North Walsham teams to half a dozen. The challenge put out at the end of last season was to try and increase the League to twenty-four teams and the target has been met exactly. The increase means that the League is able to expand to three divisions – the Premier, First and Second – with each division containing eight teams who will play each other at home and away. The formation of the divisions has been decided in the usual way with the all the teams listed in the order they finished last season with relegation and promotion taken into account. The new teams are then added on at the bottom of the list and then the cuts are made to determine who plays in

which division.

Three home teams are in the Premier division with NWSCA likely to be battling out title honours with Gresham’s School A and Hunworth Outlaws. NWSCB will be looking to build on their strong performance from last season while former Specials player Ray Howe has joined NWSCD. Backhanders, Sharks and Poachers from Cromer, Trunch and Hunworth respectively complete the line-up.

NWSCC and NWSCE will both compete in the first division against Aylsham A and Aylsham B, Gresham’s School B, Trunch Barracudas and the two remaining Cromer tennis club teams Crosscourts and Dropshots. The new NWSCF team will share Antingham Village Hall as their home base with NWSCA (the other four Walsham teams of course playing at the Sports Centre) and will battle out the third

division with Aylsham C and Aylsham D, two new Mundesley teams and three teams from the Lighthouse Community Church at Sheringham.

The opening action of the season is the opening round of the two Knockout Cups with some home teams receiving first round byes and others given some tricky draws. NWSCA should have a comfortable start to their defence of the doubles away to LCC Lobsters, while NWSCF have received a very tough home draw against Gresham’s School A. There will be an intriguing singles clash between Aylsham A and NWSCD but the pick of the round looks to be NWSCB’s home tie against Outlaws.

So far quite a few tickets have been sold, but obviously the more the better as it would be great to see as many people as possible. Hopefully some of the teachers will be there as well (they are allowed to come for free)! Please contact Debbie Smurthwaite nee Hobden on Facebook, deb.1958@tiscali.co.uk or 01692 406516. Looking forward to seeing everyone.

Crab & Lobster Festival’s Auction a grand success!

The 2014 Cromer and Sheringham Crab & Lobster Festival came to a close on Sunday 24 August with a Grand Auction of Bootiful Boats and World Pier Crabbing Championships in Cromer.

The decorated boats lined the slopes leading down to the pier, local food and craft stalls lined the promenade and lines were set ready for a funfilled, action-packed day of competitive crabbing and bidding. The sunny bank holiday Sunday saw thousands of people visiting the town to take part in the festivities.

Under the hammer of renowned auctioneer Martyn Fox, the 70 boats sold in just over 50 minutes to raise over £4,100 which will be distributed to local charities via the Festival’s Community Grant scheme. The boats were part of the Festival’s art trail which ran from Easter, over the Festival weekend and up until the Auction. Over 150 individuals had a hand in decorating the lifebuoys including 10 community groups and schools as well as families and staff of local businesses.

Auctioneer Martyn Fox - courtesy Dave Roberts The Festival also handed out awards to the winners of their third Scrumptious Seafood Trail. Festival presidents Noel Gant and Hilary Cox were on hand to present the awards and congratulate the winners as voted by customers who sampled the array of seafood dishes available on over 20 outlets on the trail. The top awards went to Breakers Café in Cromer and Joyful West’s Shellfish Bar in Sheringham. The Festival wishes to thank all the people who helped, supported and bid at the event. Next year’s Festival will take place 15 – 17 May 2015.

World Pier Crabbing Champions - courtesy Team Havoc After furious bidding on many of the lots the boat that achieved the top price at auction was sponsored by The Garden House Gallery in Cromer and was decorated by Samuel Thomas fetched £430. This was closely followed by the boat sponsored by Breakers Cafe in Cromer and decorated by Dianne Lindsay at £290 which was bought back by the Cafe and will be displayed there for customers to view.

Festival chairman Tony Shipp said “seeing all 70 boats on show together for the first time was spectacular along the pier forecourt, we are extremely pleased with the support the auction received and the amount raised for the Festival’s charities” Trail organiser, Kate Royall, said “we are incredibly pleased and happy with the way it’s gone, it was an incredible amount to raise in only 50 minutes. It was fantastic to see so many locals and visitors enjoying the day and furiously bidding on the lots!”

Prior to the auction on Sunday the Festival hosted the fifth World Pier Crabbing Championships sponsored by Blyth & Wright’s of Sheringham. After three hours of competitive crabbing the World Pier Crabbing Champion title, which is won by the largest number of crabs caught on a line, was won by ‘Team Havoc 2’ from Milton Keynes, who caught five crabs. They were awarded the Richard Davies Memorial Plate which is named memory of former Cromer lifeboat coxswain Richard Davies who died in 2010.

Other prizes awarded were for the Largest Crab caught which went to Team Gangway, who caught one measuring 140mm and to five year old George Palmer who caught 44 crabs by net landing him the Most Crabs Caught by Net prize. In association with www.northwalshamdeals.co.uk
