A Very Special Moment

Issue 465 28 February 2015

Covering North Walsham, Aylsham and surrounding villages in association with the Cromer Times and Sheringham Independent

Kev Osbourne’s beautiful photograph of a water vole so captivated judge Samantha Bean that she awarded it 1st position in the Myall Natural History competition at North Walsham Photographic Group’s meeting in late January. Kev described his encounter with the water vole as “a very special moment”.

Kev captured the image at the RSBP Titchwell Marsh Nature Reserve, in April. He

said “I arrived quite early in the day and decided to take the boardwalk route through the marshland area first. At the first wooden bridge I saw a water vole swimming out from underneath it, so I waited to see if I could get a good view of it. Then I saw a second water vole swimming around the margins. It swam towards me and then disappeared from view, just a few metres away from where I was standing. As there was no noticeable movement, I slowly moved to investigate where I last saw it and there it sat, on a rotten branch eating reeds. ...Continued p4

A Very Special Moment Continued from front page

Where it sat was quite dark so I did not know if I would be able to get a decent image or not, but had to try. I slowly got down as low as I could, almost laying on the ground and snapped away. I am sure it could see me: I was only 2-3 metres away from it, but it did not seem to bother one bit. It must have sat there for at least 2 or 3 minutes. After eating several reed tips it then swam away, followed by the second water vole that joined it. It was indeed a very special moment. Technical Data: Kevin used a Canon PowerShot SX 40 HS; the focal length was150m; the subject distance was 2.5m; Aperture: f5.6; Shutter Speed: 1/400th second; ISO; 200. North Walsham Photographic Group meet at the Atrium every 2nd and 4th Tuesday of each month. Parking Fees

North Norfolk District Council raised nearly £4,000 in car park fees during its 'free' parking weekend before Christmas, prompting further concerns about how the council dealt with promotion of the scheme. The figure totaling £3,603.20 was revealed in a Freedom of Information request from the North Norfolk Labour Party, who earlier this month complained too many visitors to North Norfolk car parks were still paying on 21/22 December 2014.

Users of social media complained over the weekend that customers were still paying in car parks in Sheringham, Cromer, Holt, and North Walsham. The North Norfolk Labour Party believes more needs to be done on free parking days to ensure visitors Photo: David Spencer to our towns are aware of the scheme and staying to shop in our towns.

David Spencer, North Norfolk Labour Party's spokesperson for North Walsham, said: "North Norfolk District Council needs to rethink their car parking strategy, this only rubs salt into the wounds for North Walsham where they are proposing to charge for free car parks. It brings a mockery to these free parking days when nearly £4,000 was raised in revenue. I thought the point of these days was to bring more trade to our town centres, but in North Walsham there was plenty of confusion, and we did not reep the full benefits.

The District Council claims they could not afford to do more to stop visitors paying, but I am sure that there would be a number of willing volunteers in each town who could cover up the parking machines for those weekends."

Dear Margaret,

As a resident of Skeyton road, I have I have noticed some drivers do not indicate when pulling into Brookes drive and Buxton road, so this is something that needs to be addressed as lots of children walk back from primary school this way and could potentially get run over.

Also at the top of Skeyton road, on the country lane, cars speed illegally and when I go up on the bank, to let them pass, they don’t slow down so if I ever fell when a car was passing I could be run over. This is also an issue for the numerous dog walkers, who use this lane constantly. Yours sincerely Jasmin Oates

LOCAL LIFEBOAT LUCY LAVERS RETURNS TO DUNKIRK, 75 YEARS ON

Something special is happening this Spring – veteran lifeboat Lucy Lavers is returning to Dunkirk. Her very first trip as a newly-built lifeboat in May 1940 was helping the evacuation of British and Allied troops stranded in Dunkirk, France. This Spring will be the first time she’s been back there since ‘Operation Dynamo’. The charity Rescue Wooden Boats is using a Heritage Lottery Grant to restore Lucy Lavers to her former glory in order to make this commemorative voyage. After years of neglect, by May 2015 she will look her magnificent best again. In early May 2015 Lucy Lavers will leave Wellsnext-the-Sea calling at Lowestoft, Aldeburgh, Levington, Harwich, Ramsgate, and finally crossing the Channel to Dunkirk. The aim is to tell her story in each port and to encourage people, especially young people, to learn about the Dunkirk evacuation and maritime history. At each port, visitors can board Lucy Lavers, experience being on this 1940 lifeboat and feel the enormity of the events she took part in. Lucy Lavers’ journey will involve a team of volunteer sailing crews, onshore coordinators, and a film crew, all working together along her route to France and back. There will be a programme of

linked events onshore, including presentations and a volunteer-manned travelling exhibition. There is even the opportunity to share in this exciting voyage, by bidding for a place on board for some legs of the journey! Visit our eBay profile to bid www.ebay.co.uk/usr/rescuewoodenboats We are seeking support - the voyage from Wellsnext-the-Sea is 385 nautical miles and will cost £90 per mile. Text LLDQ01 £3 to 70070 to donate by text, or donate at www.rescuewoodenboats.com, and your name will be written in a commemorative book that will accompany Lucy Lavers on her voyage. We encourage community participation – volunteers, fundraisers, educational organisations and local interest groups will be welcomed at each port of call. CALLING ALL CHILDREN 7-12 YEARS INTERESTED IN DRAMA

Children are wanted in the North Walsham area to take part in a musical 'Jonah & the Whale' planned to be performed at the North Walsham Atrium on Saturday 13 June. Registration will take place at the North Walsham Salvation Army Hall, Hall Lane North Walsham, NR28 9DT on Monday 2 March at 4.30pm with rehearsals to be at that time each Monday. Weekly cost just 50p. For more information contact Major Richard Durrant on 01692 652263 or richard.durrant@salvationarmy.org.uk . The project, which

has designed in response to local demand, has been made possible thanks to £211,512 of National Lottery funding from Sport England’s Community Sport Activation Fund. There were well over 200 applications nationally for the fund, and NNDC is among 88 projects to receive a share of £15 million of funding to support grassroots sport activity across the country. The project aims to build on the work NNDC has already delivered through its highly successful mobile gym service. Emphasis will be placed on making these activities self-supporting in the longer term, something that has already been achieved with a number of ‘community gyms’ in the district.

The second phase of the project will start in February and will see sporting activities delivered in local schools for 14 – 25 year olds. Activities will include Street Dancing, Martial Arts and Boxing. To book any of the activities or for more information, please see www.northnorfolk.org/clubsandhubs or contact Wyn Nurse on 01263 516305. In association with www.northwalshamdeals.co.uk

NORTH NORFOLK LAW FIRM REACHES 60 YEARS AND RECLAIMS INDEPENDENCE

Tammy Parnell is the Managing Partner of Clapham & Collinge. “Our mission as a business is very simple; every day we strive to be the very best law firm for people in Norfolk”, she explains. “From buying a first home to handling a painful divorce, supporting a local business with a management buy-out or dealing with a complicated trust, we will fight tooth and nail for our clients. As a team we understand Norfolk and the things that make it special and different from other parts of the UK”.

Clapham & Collinge, one of Norfolk’s oldest and best respected law firms, has announced that it has left national legal network QualitySolicitors after four years. The move to re-establish itself as a completely independent firm coincides with Clapham & Collinge’s 60th anniversary and is being marked with a fresh new visual identity.

“Respect is critical to the way we work as a firm”, adds Tammy Parnell. “We always try to make our clients feel relaxed when they come to see us; we are professional but avoid being stuffy or intimidating. Our aim is to build relationships with clients so that they think of Clapham & Collinge as their law firm; a team that is there whenever they need us.”

Clapham & Collinge has offices in Sheringham and Norwich and employs more than 50 people. The firm offers a wide range of services including conveyancing, family law, commercial and corporate matters and private client work. On Monday, 9th February, clients and staff arriving at the firm’s offices were greeted by an elegant plum and pistachio brand-mark which has replaced the bright pink QualitySolicitors logo.

Hugh Berridge is Senior Partner at Clapham & Collinge and has been with the firm for more than 35 years. “As a firm we have never been afraid of change, preferring to tackle challenges head on. Over the years we’ve adapted our services and approach to ensure we always offer what our clients need in a way that works best for them”, Hugh explains. “Becoming part of a large, national network was absolutely the right decision for us four years ago. At that time changes in legislation were making it incredibly hard for smaller law firms to compete against commodity legal providers such as the large supermarket chains. We were determined to put ourselves in the best possible position to retain our market share and grow as a business. There was a good fit between Clapham & Collinge and QualitySolicitors and we were able to learn from each other and create a customer-focused brand that is now well-known across the UK.” “We have enjoyed, and benefited from, being part of QualitySolicitors but, after a great deal of deliberation, the Clapham & Collinge partners decided that the time was right to start re-focusing on our own brand”, continues Hugh Berridge. “We have always been incredibly proud to be a Norfolk firm and, as we develop the business, the county is where our commitment lies.” Clapham & Collinge will continue to deliver the same comprehensive range of legal services to their clients.

As part of its commitment to being ‘the very best law firm for people in Norfolk’, Clapham & Collinge is actively involved in a range of local charities and community initiatives. As well as supporting charities such as Break, Will-Aid and the Norfolk Wildlife Trust, the firm develops and promotes its own events such as regular free advice coffee mornings, dementia awareness events and training sessions.

“We are extremely excited about our future as an independent local firm. Whilst our existing clients won’t notice any changes to the excellent service we provide, we hope that people who don’t already know us will be tempted to find out more about how we can help them. The move away from being part of a national network means that we can revert to making business decisions that are entirely focused on the needs of our business, our clients and our community”, concludes Hugh Berridge. Clapham & Collinge can offer free initial consultations and the firm is, in many cases, able to provide a ‘flat fee’ quote at the outset. This means clients know what bill to expect and can phone their solicitor for an update without worrying that a surprise invoice will follow. For more information about Clapham & Collinge call 01263 823398, email sherinfo@claphamcollinge.co.uk or visit www.clapham-collinge.co.uk

NORTH WALSHAM MARKET CROSS W.I

The February meeting was very well attended and after opening the meeting Kim introduced Margaret Collingwood who had stepped in as a replacement to our planned speaker. We were very quickly introduced to Margaret's family life during her husband's five year posting in Guinea Bissau. The talk was immensely interesting and us members were soon immersed into their domestic and social life. Margaret explained that although some of the time her family life was chaotic, each day presented different opportunities and challenges she expressed that it had also been a very enjoyable life experience. Margaret is a trained singer and during her time in Guinea Bissau she organised a Benefit Gala dinner. The Sheraton Hotel offered the venue and also enabled her domestic staff to attend the dinner by em-

ploying them for the evening Margaret supplying their uniforms so that they too could enjoy her singing. This dinner made an incredible amount of money and was used to set up a clinic situated nearby so that young boys could be circumcised in safe conditions. Previous this was done in unhygienic surroundings with virtually untrained people and obviously accompanied by a high mortality rate. Stephanie thanked Margaret on behalf of the members for such an entertaining talk which was enjoyed by all. Our Spring lunch is planned for the 10th April the venue is yet to be confirmed. There is a coffee morning planned by the combined North Walsham WI's on the 26th February and also North Walsham Market Cross WI on the 12th March.

On 10 February, the locomotive Mayflower departed from Sheringham North Norfolk Railway station across the crossing to join the mainline to journey through to Norwich.

The movement was very historic as this was the first steam locomotive to leave the railway under its own power without the need for diesel support since the new crossing was opened in 2010. The

Cakes for the sale table and help on the day is needed for both events. A coach trip to Gressenhall Museum is planned for Thursday 23rd July and a board was circulated to members to express their interest. The group meeting is to be held in the Community Centre on Tuesday March 17th. We next meet on March 11th which is also our birthday evening and we will be entertained by David Pycroft and friend We meet on the second Wednesday of the month at St Benet Hall at 7.15pm A warm welcome is given to all so why not come and join us and see what the WI can offer you. Please contact Kim Reynolds for details on 01692 406246

original crossing closed 50 years ago. The locomotive travelled through to Norwich where it overnighted before hauling a special charter train to Windsor on the Wednesday morning. The locomotive has a full diary of charters to haul before it returns to the North Norfolk Railway later in the summer.

The LNER class B1 number 61306 had been resident at North Norfolk Railway since August last year. The locomotive operated at the railway during the autumn and has been prepared for its planned mainline work during the winter months. The locomotive is renowned for looking pristine and this was certainly the case when it departed Sheringham.

NORTH WALSHAM TABLE TENNIS

NWSCC MISS OUT ON QUARTERFINAL PLACE BY JUST TWO POINTS The Handicap Singles Cup is underway with a new format in which the early part of the competition has been devoted to a round robin stage where eight groups have been formed that comprise a team from each of the three divisions who play each other once – the team’s positive and negative point differences from their two matches are then tallied with the best team from each group advancing to the quarter-finals when the competition reverts to a knockout format. Having said the competition is a round robin, Outlaws withdrawal from Group 2 meant the match between NWSCE’s Stuart Hook (15), Ben Lester (19) and James Lester (17) and Aylsham C’s Owain Athill (26), Becky Wood (29) and Tom Mountain (30) would decide which team would progress to the quarter-finals. The handicaps gave Aylsham an average start of 11 points and after a third of the contest they led by 16 points, before Ben Lester pulled 10 points back against Athill (+7). A great game by Hook against Mountain (+15) saw him win the two sets by a total of 40-37 to keep NWSCE’s hopes very much alive at what could have been a dangerous point for the team in the match at the half-way stage with Aylsham leading now by just three points after ten sets. James Lester’s 21-16 win against Athill (+9) in both sets during the eighth contest saw NWSCE take the lead for the very first time as the ten point swing meant the five point lead for Aylsham turned into a five point advantage for NWSCE. Hook found Wood’s 14 start slightly too much too claw back from a steady opponent in the final battle as she won 21-18, 21-17. In a match where nine sets were won by each team, Aylsham won 338-336 and progressed in the competition by just two points.

At North Walsham Sports Centre, NWSCD’s Mary Sawyer (11), Joe Kirkup (7) and Philip Stone (8) hosted NWSCC’s Chris Johnson (20), Richard Porritt (14) and Tom Wardle (23) in Group 8. Stone started well with a 21-14, 21-16 win against Johnson (+12) who was returning from a rib injury. NWSCD’s lead of 12 points was cut by nine after Porritt served well against Sawyer but it was Wardle’s fast attacking game that caused them the biggest headache. With starts of 16 and 15 against Kirkup and Stone respectively, both NWSCD players were only able to pick up just a dozen points each with the 60 points gained by NWSCC in those two battles helping them greatly as they went on to win 355-252. On the adjoining table in Group 1, NWSCB’s Dennis Elliott (7), Paul Price (8) and Simon Halliday (6) hosted Aylsham B’s John Hall (17), John Miller (14) and Harley Dyson (26). In a match curiously similar to the one being played next door (both lasting exactly one and three quarter hours), NWSCB led by two points after the first two singles, but then Dyson’s (+20) 24-9, 24-8 win against Halliday gained the visitors 25 points. Dyson went on to gain a further 20 and then 28 points against Elliott and Price respectively as Aylsham B won 364-266. The following week NWSCF’s Stan Baldock, Andrew Weston and Carrie Last stuck to their game-plan to beat Aylsham B by 60 points and either a win or else a loss than less than 21 points against NWSCB will see them win the group. Back in Group 8, NWSCC lost to LCC Crabs by just 8 points and are still topping the standings as Crabs will require 88 or more points against NWSCD to advance. Finally in Group 3 NWSCA lost to Crosscourts by 41 points and will require a win of 60 points or more against Aylsham D.

WHALE :THE STORY OF PUTU, SIKU AND K’NIK

The award winning Far East Theatre Company based at Paston Sixth Form College, performed Whale to packed audiences earlier this month at the Atrium North Walsham. The play is based on the true story of three grey whales trapped beneath the ice of North Alaska in 1988.This sparked a worldwide operation bringing together American, Russian and Inuit people. This incredible story is interwoven with Inuit legend and is a mix of old traditions and modern ecological issues. Dawn Finnerty who directed the production said ‘I wanted to choose a play that was celebratory, a moment in our recent history where people of the world put their differences aside and united together for the sake of a common cause. The play lends itself to many creative opportunities for performers to integrate drama, dance and song and we stripped away set and stage wizardry for a minimalist yet compelling approach to storytelling.’

The plot was cleverly explained by a group of storytellers who included Leonie Barnes-Wake, Bethany Whitaker, Lorna Miller-Fik, Noah Horne-Morris and Amy Bell. All the cast played a significant role, with many members playing multiple parts. Special mention must go to Dylan Rowe who played The Raven in a mischievous comic manner with a sinister edge. North Walsham & District Historical Society

‘Energy: past and future’ was the subject of an informative February meeting. Firstly, Derrick Hankin talked about the early sources of energy in North Walsham. Log & coal fires were initially used for cooking and warmth. Windmill energy was also important but was limited by being restricted to the immediate vicinity, for example grinding corn.

The first gas installation in town arrived in 1838 and supplied Randell’s shop in the Market Place. Gas lighting came to town around 1900 and the first light was placed on Market Place opposite the entrance to the church. The gasworks of ‘North Walsham Gas Light & Coke Co. Ltd’ were built on Mundesley Road (where the car park is now situated.) In 1927, electricity was installed by William Le Grice, Chairman of the Town Council. The electricity station was located in Bank Loke and 5060 dwellings initially took supply. The use of fossil fuel-powered gas and electricity continues to this day.

Next, Roger Crane of Aylsham Growers Renewables talked about bio-

gas, a form of renewable energy, and his involvement with Oak Grove Renewables and their Anaerobic Digester at Scottow.

Maize is harvested between September - October and 42 local farmers annually supply 35,000 tonnes of the “chipped” forage maize to the digester. Here the maize is compacted into large bins and covered with polythene sheets to prevent the entry of oxygen (the anaerobic process.) It is then later placed in the Primary Digester where bacteria works on the maize “porridge” as it is mixed & warmed and 80% of the gas is subsequently released. This gas is sent to the gas engines and generator for use at the Scottow sub-station. The waste product- both liquid & solid – is used by the farmers as fertilizer.

Our next meeting is at 7.30pm, Thursday 5 March in St Benet’s Hall, North Walsham when Polly Ploughman will be talking about the history of buttons. Visitors are warmly welcomed. Diana Velhagen

Councils working together to find a suitable outcome

North Norfolk District Council is continuing to work closely with North Walsham Town Council to help find it suitable alternative accommodation in light of the proposed £1.6m investment from JD Wetherspoon.

Following a report to the Council’s Cabinet in November 2014, a working group has been established with representatives from both the District and the Town Council. The group has worked together constructively and positively to identify the accommodation requirements of the Town Council.

In addition to the support being given to find alternative premises, North Norfolk District Council has committed one-off funding of up to £20,000 to the Town Council to help meet any costs which may be incurred as a result of the relocation.

A decision regarding the future use of the funds from a sale of the New Road building will be a matter for the next Council. In the meantime, the Council welcomes ideas and project proposals for regeneration in North

Walsham (and other areas of the District) which would require capital investment. Tom FitzPatrick, Leader of North Norfolk District Council, said “North Norfolk District Council and North Walsham Town Council are working together for the benefit of the people of North Walsham and the wider district. We collectively recognise the vote of confidence which comes from a national chain seeking to invest in the town, and for this reason we are committed to bringing a Wetherspoon offer to North Walsham together with the jobs and investment which will result.

Discussions to find a new home and to help fund the Town Council’s relocation have been productive and I am confident that, together, we will reach a suitable outcome for all concerned.”

%

North Walsham Town Mayor, Richard Sims, added “We are surprised that there are suggestions of some kind of stalemate between the District Council and the Town Council concerning the sale of the District Council offices to Wetherspoons.

“Our on-going talks continue to be positive and together with the district council’s offer of funding to help the relocation and its commitment to help us find suitable alternative accommodation, I am confident of a positive outcome in the near future.”

NEW YEAR, NEW START, NEW LIFE

It’s a New Start to a New Year for New Life Church North Walsham, we are now meeting at The Community Centre in New Road North Walsham on a Sunday morning starting 10.30am.

Our services are very relaxed with a time of worship led by members of the worship team followed by a preach by one of the members of the church. We are a charismatic church who follows the teachings of Jesus and the Bible very closely.

While the preach is happening the children go into other rooms to enjoy a time of fun and games which are bible based. We also have a crèche for the very young children.

At the end of church time we enjoy chatting

over coffee and biscuits which is a great way of catching up with each other and getting to meet new people.

Outside of our Sunday morning time we also have “Harvest” which is held on Monday evenings at the home of our youth leaders in North Walsham for young people of High School Age.

Tuesday mornings is ‘The Ark’ at the Community Centre in North Walsham, a mother and baby/toddler group and a time to meet other mums and share some laughs, problems and cake.

Wednesday mornings is ‘The Upper Room’ at The Charis Centre, and is open to anyone needing a place to chat/meet new friends over

Targeted rock placement at Ostend, Walcott North Norfolk District Council is currently constructing two 30m rock sills below the cliffs at Ostend, Walcott in addition to continued maintenance of the existing sea defences.

The Ostend Targeted Rock Placement Scheme will assist with the protection of homes imminently at risk and is intended to provide some time for alternative measures to be developed and implemented for those properties and the wider community.

This scheme has been funded following a successful bid to the Norfolk County Council Coastal Fund which was developed on behalf and with support from the local community.

Following a meeting with local residents, the Council identified that further support was required in addition to the work being undertaken under the current scheme. It is therefore recommending a further £55,000 to be set aside into its capital programme to provide further assistance for the Ostend coastal frontage should it be required.

Following the completion of the current scheme, the situation will be assessed and, if required, necessary consents will be sought for further works.

Tom FitzPatrick, Leader of North Norfolk District Council, said “We are continually seeking ways of managing our diverse coastline from the impact of the North Sea and are working closely with local communities affected by erosion. This scheme at Ostend has been designed to slow erosion rates in order to provide valuable time in support of those with homes imminently at risk and to enable a longer-term approach to be developed.”

It is anticipated that work to construct the rock sills will be completed by be completed by 20 February 2015.

St Nicholas Mothers’ Union At our February meeting we were pleased to welcome Michelle Frazer who gave a most interesting and informative talk about the work of the charity Leeway.

The charity was founded in 1974 to offer refuge and support to victims of domestic abuse in Norfolk and the edge of Suffolk. Leeway have three residential refuges in Norwich, Great Yarmouth and North Norfolk where women and children live in small self contained flats within a Leeway complex.

Among other things Leeway run an after school club where the children can enjoy ‘messy play’ and other social activities. The staff work alongside many other agencies to 14

ensure that the women receive the best available support and advice on an individual basis and when they leave the refuge to live independently they are supported for up to six weeks.

The charity also offers support in the community and runs several courses designed to build self esteem and empower women to take charge of their own lives. They go into schools to support children and run holiday activities, which include art and more messy play, which is very therapeutic.

Our next meeting is 10 March at 2.30pm in St Nicholas Room when the Rev. Paul Cubitt will give a Lent talk.

Visitors and new members are always welcome, for more details please contact Ann on 01692 402705

Following her meeting earlier this month with the Secretary of State for DEFRA, Rt. Hon. Elizabeth Truss MP, Cllr John Lee and Billy Gaff, Chairman of the North Norfolk Fishermen’s Society, Ann Steward continues to discuss how Cromer Crab and other heritage food products can be protected in an effort to boost prosperity in North Norfolk. At their earlier meeting Elizabeth Truss urged Norfolk food producers to apply for Protected Food Names. She told the Norfolk Farming Conference that studies had shown that the sales advantages of a Protected Food Name could mean higher prices for export markets than similar foods that have no protected status. Ann Steward said “I will continue to meet representatives from the fishing community and other stakeholders to discuss how Cromer crab and other traditional food products from North Norfolk can benefit from Protected Food Names.

making a visit to her home to make a delivery, where I was able to renew my acquaintance with him. It was very satisfying to meet him again and to see what a difference a loving home makes. His new owner collected him from the bed, where he had been having a snooze, for me to see what a beautiful boy he is. He bounced into the room straight on to my lap to have a fuss and cuddle, from there to his owners lap to have his tummy tickled and once he had enough people attention, out into the hall to play chase with his toys. He now looks a picture of health, his lovely coat now shiny with no tangles and, from his demeanor, a very healthy and happy cat.

Branch of Cats Protection League

Over 3,200 cats re-homed since the branch began is a lot of cats and, although we cannot remember them all, some leave a lasting impression of their stay with us. Two such cats arrived a few years ago; both were very scared when they joined us. They had not been treated for fleas and both had scabby coats as a consequence of a flea allergy. Their coats were dull and matted and they did not particularly enjoy being together. They also had no idea how to play despite being relatively young cats.

The first course of action was to take them to the vets to be If you are interested in receiving help to checked, commence treatment to relieve their itchy skin and to Photo : Charlie, a lovely young cat who neuter your cat/kitten please ring 07880 get rid of all the fleas. It is not just us two legged folk who put on a few pounds over the winter, we see fluctuations in our patients weight at the vets over the colder months too. Understandably, our feline friends are less keen to venture out doors when it is cold and wet and although many dogs are willing whatever the weather, the same can’t be said for all of us owners! ingly common problem encountered within the veterinary practice (it is estimated that one third of pets are now overweight) and can lead to complications such as arthritis, respiratory problems and diabetes. Many of us are familiar with the aches and pains associated with arthritis and the same is true in animals. Fortunately, weight loss is a more effective treatment for joint problems in dogs and cats than any form of medication and works out much cheaper too!

With this in mind Westover Vets has put together a comprehensive provision of free nurse weight clinics, large discounts on diet food and the incentive of becoming our ‘slimmer of the year’ to help anyone trying to achieve a healthy weight for their pet. There are some remarkable satiety and metabolic diets available to aid weight loss, and can make the difference in patients where the usual ‘eat less, exercise more regimes have failed to do the trick. If you have any concerns about the weight of your pet or have struggled to help them lose weight, please just drop us a line and we would be happy to check them over and offer some advice.

Rock Buns & Rolling Pins WI Our first meeting of 2015 was a busy one and prior to our speakers, all members needed to vote on the removal of the brackets from our name. We were then treated to a brief explanation from Gill Finch of The Federation of North Walsham Junior, infant school and nursery regarding a fundraising event they are holding to raise funds to repair the vandalism carried out at the school last year. They have named the event ‘Project PomPom’ and their aim is to make 5,000 Pom Poms for a huge display and then businesses, organisations and individuals pledge to sponsor £1per pompom. More information regarding this event can be obtained direct from the school or via Facebook and Twitter.

This was followed by our first speaker of 2015, which was a real treat as we were treated to an evening with Roy Davenport of Davenports Magic Kingdom. Roy came across as a very enthusiastic man and was entertaining from the very start. He began his presentation with a rope trick, before going on to give a very informative account of the Davenport family history and business. Roy’s Great Grandfather Lewis Davenport born in 1881 became the family breadwinner when at just 8 years of age his father passed away. It was a lodger they took in at the house who sparked his interest in magic and before long he was earning money by performing. His magical skills grew and he was performing more and more and even began making tricks to sell. His first wife with whom he had two children was part of his act but sadly passed away after suffering from tuberculosis. He went onto remarry and have two more children. His magical shows took him around the world and a shop in London was opened and is still going strong today. As a result of his success, he was able to purchase a 16 bedroomed mansion in Kent. Over the years, Lewis Davenport’s family has added to his business and when Roy appeared at the Cromer Seaside Show 15 years ago, it was then they he and his wife decided to move to the county and to make North Walsham the home of the museum known as Davenport’s Magic Kingdom, where the collection of all memorabilia collected since the late 1800s would go on display for the general public. Roy ended his presentation with a trick involving six solid steel rings. A very enjoyable evening. Visitors are very welcome at our meetings, we just ask for £4 to help with meeting costs. Complimentary tea and cake provided at all meetings. For more details, find us on Facebook, follow us on Twitter @RockBunsWI or visit our website at www.rockbuns.wordpress.com. The Nook Appeal reaches £500,000 mark Generous individuals, organisations, businesses and charitable trusts have rallied together to raise a staggering half a million pounds for East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) nook appeal.

As it stands, an impressive £500,769.51 has been raised for the appeal since it was launched 10 weeks ago in the presence of EACH Royal Patron HRH The Duchess of Cambridge at the Norfolk Showground. Funds have been raised in all manner of ways and the Christmas period in particular generated considerable sums with retiring collections at carol services, donations in lieu of Christmas cards and street collections all adding to the total. The nook Foundation appeal, which encourages £10 donations, has also been incredibly successful. The most significant donation to the nook appeal so far is a generous £150,000 donation from The Thompson Family Charitable Trust. The Thompson Family Charitable Trust has donated £300,000 to EACH with a request for £150,000 to be allocated towards the nook appeal and the remainder to fund our on-going service delivery. The Thompson Family Charitable Trust have generously supported EACH since 1997 and have donated a total of £631,000 to the charity since their support began.

Charitable Trust, said “The trust has supported EACH for many years and we’re delighted to be able to support EACH with a donation to the nook appeal to build a new hospice and to continue delivering care and support at the charity’s existing hospices. Fundraising initiatives to appeal to as wide an audience as possible have been created including ‘the nook foundation appeal’ asking people to donate £10, ‘friends of the nook’ asking individuals to give £1,200 a year for three years and ‘the nook business network’ asking companies to commit to raising either £10,000, £15,000 or £25,000 over the duration of the appeal. There’s also plenty of events happening in the next few months to get involved with too, including: • Charity Pamper Day - Dunston Hall, 13 March • Country Music Fair – Mulbarton, 15 March • EACH Grand Prix – Ellough Park Raceway, 12 April • Grand Charity Masked Ball – Dunston Hall, 18 April • The nook Colour Dash 5k – Norwich, 3 May • EACH Ride for Life – Thetford Forest, 14 June • London to Paris Bike Ride, 22 - 25 July • The Lake District 24 Peak Challenge 11-13 September • City of Norwich Half Marathon – 22 November • Norwich Santa Run – 6 December EACH is also encouraging Norfolk’s residents to host their own fundraising events. North Norfolk Model Engineers Come of Age Have you ever wondered how a steam engine works? Or always wanted to learn to drive a Miniature locomotive?

The North Norfolk Model Engineering Club is holding an Open Day on Sunday 22 March between 11am – 4pm at Holt Station on the North Norfolk Railway’s site as part of its 21st Birthday celebrations.

Chairman Gordon Ford said “We would like to be able to share our enjoyment of our engineering hobby with members of the public and give them the opportunity to become involved”. There will be an exhibition of various models which we hope will show the breadth of the club member’s interests, it’s not just about trains! From the humble early beginnings of a few likeminded friends meeting together in a shed, we know have monthly meetings with 30-40 members at High Kelling Village Hall on the first Friday of the month at 07.30pm, with a variety of interesting speakers planned for the year ahead. THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER

GROWING PLANTS FOR FLOWER ARRANGING The first known flower arrangements date to 2500BCE in ancient Egypt. Egyptians regularly placed cut flowers in vases and highly stylized arrangements were used during burials, for processions, and simply as table decorations. Illustrations of arranged flowers have been found on Egyptian carved stone reliefs and painted wall decorations. The Greeks and the Romans also used flowers. The ancient Greeks used flowers and herbs for adornment. They did not often use vases, focusing instead on garlands and wreaths. The most popular foliage used by the Greeks and the Romans were acorns, oak leaves, laurel, ivy, bay and parsley. They also used flowers such as roses, hyacinths, honeysuckle, violets and lilies. The Chinese were making flower arrangements as far back as 207BCE to 220BCE, in the Han era of ancient China. Practitioners of Buddhism, Taoism and Confucianism placed cut flowers on their altars. Flower arranging arrived in Europe around 1000 CE, and was particularly popular in churches and monasteries where flowers and plants were also used for food and medicine as well as for decoration. Today flower arranging remains popular in the home, in the church and for all sorts of functions. Buying flowers from florists is expensive but many plants can be grown in our gardens to pro-

vide material for cutting either by adapting existing borders or dedicating part of the garden to growing flowers for cutting.

Existing borders. When adapting existing borders, plant larger than usual groups of annuals, perennials and bulbs suited for cutting to allow for picking without affecting the overall appearance of the border. Do not forget to include a few well-chosen shrubs and grasses with interesting foliage. Use bulbs to extend the picking season. The cutting garden. If space allows, dedicate a part of the garden to growing just cut flowers. The advantage of a cutting garden over picking from the borders is that it avoids reducing your garden display. Plant or sow in rows; this makes weeding, staking and picking much easier. Take the final spread of plants into account and allow access between the rows, otherwise plants will fall into each other, get tangled and can be damaged making them less suitable for harvesting. Choosing the site. Cut flowers need a fertile, weed-free soil. Annual application of organic matter especially to sandy and clay soils help retain moisture and improve soil structure. In dry summers watering may be necessary to achieve good stem length. Moderate applications of a general fertiliser are often helpful and mulching with composted manure or bark suppresses weeds and retains moisture. Most cut flowers are sun-lovers,

but a few will tolerate shade. Windy sites are best avoided otherwise robust staking will be needed.

Choosing plants. When deciding what to sow, or plant, make sure that they are suitable for your garden conditions and meet your intended purpose. Obviously if the flowers are needed for a particular event, choose varieties that will be at their best at that time of year. If you are planning to help with church decorations throughout the year plan for succession and make sure that you include plenty of foliage plants. The TV presenter Sarah Raven has her own range of seeds especially for cutting and these might make a good starting point and give ideas on the wide variety of choices available. With careful choices and a little care you will be able to grow bunches of flowers to arrange at home, in church or for that special occasion. Bob Wilkinson
