Crab & Lobster Festival 2013 is launched Nip along to North Norfolk

This May Cromer and Sheringham will host the fourth Crab & Lobster Festival – a feast of fun, food, art, music, heritage and entertainment – and there are more opportunities than ever to get involved.

A full and varied programme will take place across the Festival weekend 17-19 May. On Thursday 24 January an evening of lifebuoys, film and seafood launched the 2013 Festival.

The Crab & Lobster Festival will kick off the coming holiday season with an Opening Concert on at Cromer Pier’s Pavilion Theatre on Friday 17 May. Hosted by the ever-popular Olly Day the concert will feature music by the renowned Sheringham Shantymen, internationally-respected singer John Conolly and comedy by Nigel ‘Boy’ Sayer. This will be a show for everyone who enjoys the seaside tradition of Sea Shanties, folk and irresistible humour. Tickets for this concert are now on sale via the Pavilion Theatre box office on 01263 512495 at only £5 each.

Crab & Lobster Festival 2013 is launched Nip along to North Norfolk ... Continued from front cover

The Festival weekend continues in Cromer on Saturday 18 May and in Sheringham on Sunday 19 May with a programme which promises a feast of superb seafood, scintillating street entertainment, music, comedy, film, seafood competitions, the World Pier Crabbing Championships and the return of the Festival’s art trail.

In 2013 the Festival will concentrate on highlighting the local seafaring heritage of Cromer and Sheringham through live demonstrations of fishing crafts where audiences can also ‘have a go’, crab dressing competitions as well as cookery demonstrations from local and national chefs and fish specialists.

This week the Festival launched a range of ways in which local businesses, schools, community groups and individuals can get involved with this year’s celebrations. Central to this is the Lifebuoy Art Trail which will run in the same spirit as the decorated windbreaks in 2012. For the sum of £50 or £60 sponsors will be supplied with a 24” or 30” primed, plastic lifebuoy to decorate and display as part of the Festival’s Art Trail which will run from Easter until August 2013. At the end of the trail all the windbreaks will go into the Grand Windbreak Auction on Sunday 25 August. The first 100 lifebuoys are now available to sponsor. Alongside the Lifebuoy Art Trail the Festival is encouraging artists, designers and creative’s of all ages and abilities to enter their second Poster Design Competition where one lucky winner will see their design turned into 2013s official Festival poster. Details of the competition can be found on the Festival website, the deadline is Friday 1 March.

The Festival would like to see as many people as possible getting involved. Chairman Tony Shipp said “We are delighted to start the year on such a positive note. We hope the Lifebuoy Art Trail will be as successful as the windbreaks, it’s a great way for visitors to explore the area and see what North Norfolk has to offer.” He added “we are

also running the Festival’s Poster Design Competition where people can design the Festival’s official poster for 2013, entries are already coming in”.

With over 40 events and an expanded street theatre programme this year’s festival offers an abundance of fun for all the family across the week

Festival secretary Kate Royall said “In 2012 the Festival achieved enormous successes. Over 20,000 people enjoyed the Festival weekend, thousands followed the art trail and hundreds of people entered the poster design competition and we hope this year’s Festival, with an expanded programme of free events, will achieve the same success and bring more people to this fabulous area”.

For more information on the Lifebuoys, Poster Design Competition, volunteering with the Festival and many other opportunities please see the website www.crabandlobsterfestival.co.uk or call 07775 337201.

Crab & Lobster Festival launches second Poster Design Competition The Cromer and Sheringham Crab & Lobster Festival is launching a poster design competition for the second year running to mark its fourth Festival.

The winner of the design competition will see their image transformed into the official Festival poster and will also receive tickets to the Festival’s Opening Concert as well as a framed print of their winning design.

The competition is open to all individuals and it is hoped that artists, children, businesses and community groups will all get involved.

Tony Shipp, Festival Chairman said “We are counting down the days to the 2013 Festival. The Poster Design Competition is the ideal opportunity for locals, visitors, artists, children and community groups to get involved in this special event, which is beginning to attract national attention. I’m looking forward to lots of colourful entries landing on our desk and really brightening up the event.”

In 2012 the prize was shared jointly between Andrew Ruffhead from Burnham Market and Claire Knight from Alby.

For the design brief, application form and further information please visit the Festival website at www.crabandlobsterfestival.co.uk

Entries must be received by 5pm, Friday 1 March with a completed entry form attached to the back.

Sheringham Independent #360 2nd February 2013

Sheringham Independent Expands

The Sheringham Independent will continue to deliver 4700 copies through the letterboxes of residents and businesses in the town through 2013. However, we have been asked to expand our coverage into surrounding villages as well as to enable those not on one of our regular rounds to collect their copy from convenient locations. We will now have a circulation of 5,600. The pick-up points so far arranged are listed below - there are more to be agreed which we will list next month. The other two magazines in the Rose Villa Publications group - the North Walsham Times and Cromer Times will also be increasing the number of copies printed - Cromer will rise to 6,000 in total and North Walsham to 6400. They will be covering locations such as Mundesley, Trunch, the Runtons, Holt and Bodham as well as Aylmerton and Alby, which do not have a letterbox round. We do not know how many readers we have, but what we do know is that most people in Sheringham like to read our magazine.

We hope that in the coming year we will be able to continue to make our magazines the most read in North Norfolk.

Solo Hair re-opens on schedule

On Monday Jaunary 14th, Solo Hair Fashions officially re-opened after a major internal refurbishment of their salons with a champagne reception for as many of their clients as were able to brave the cold weather.

In fact despite the snow, Nigel and Sharon welcomed a steady stream that came in to inspect the new fixtures and fittings, which included new floors, units, basins, chairs and mirrors for the main salon, as well as new loos. Salon B has also had a refit, but needed less in the way of new equipment.

With one customer commenting on the neat paintwork, Sharon proclaimed, "Thank you - all my own work!"

"We now have a nice, new, clean environment for all our customers," said Nigel. And I would also like to remind everyone that there is also a 20% discount for your first visit to the salon in January or February." Sheringham Independent #360 2nd February 2013

Bear-Paying Passenger Returns!

After the success of last year’s Teddy Bear Express at the Bure Valley Railway this event returns for the children’s half term holiday from 16th to 24th February.

The Railway Bear will take charge again at Aylsham Station to ensure nine days of fun for all the family!

Trains will operate from both Aylsham and Wroxham stations three times per day. A children’s competition to see how many teddy bears can be spotted on the train journey, a colouring corner and a decorated Whistlestop Café add to this teddy bear themed event.

All that is required now is lots of children with their teddy bears so that the Railway Bear is not lonely! The Railway is giving free travel for every child when accompanied by a fare-paying adult (maximum two children per adult). No prior booking required. Sheringham Independent #360 2nd February 2013

More than Curtains and Linens

If you haven't popped into Cromer Curtains and Linens recently, now would be a good time. They are about to celebrate their first anniversary of the transformation. The new look layout has impressed customers, who offer continuous, positive feedback, encouraging the owners Jayne and Jeff Bowyer, as the business goes from strength to strength. It's not just Curtains and Linens though. The Wool department sells some of the biggest names in the Wool world, including Sirdar, Stylecraft and King Cole, with some of the best, if not the best prices, in North Norfolk. Jayne commented, "And you don't even have to buy the wool to get the pattern." The store does offer a great choice of Ready-Made and Customised Curtains, with hundreds of different designs, with customers able to take

samples home to ensure the colour scheme is right. "We also offer the widest choice of net curtains in Norfolk," commented Jeff. To complement this, they have an extensive range of Voile Panels. Also in the Soft Furnishings department is Bedding, Towels and lots more besides. Much more than Curtains they said, and that is certainly true - the Gift department offers a modern, contemporary, ever-changing range, which includes Picture Frames, to complement any occasion. Greetings Cards, for all events, as well as the Toy department, which also offers pocket money toys. Last but not least there is the Leather Goods department, featuring the latest fashion bags coupled with Luggage, Belts, Wallets and Purses. Something for everyone and well worth popping into the Cromer Shopping Centre next time you're near Garden Street.

Sheringham Savoyards Final Performances

Sheringham Savoyards were formed in 1979 to present the works of Gilbert & Sullivan to the people of Sheringham and beyond!

Since then they have performed all of the Operas, either as full shows or concert versions, mainly at The Little Theatre but at other venues as well. Sadly, after thirty four years, and with a drop in membership it has been decided that the Savoyards will finish after July this year. However the Society is going out with two performances! On March 23rd there will be a ‘Come and Sing’ Pirates of Penzance at St Andrew’s Methodist Church at 7.30pm, and on June 20th & 21st a Final Final Farewell Performance at The Little Theatre Sheringham, of a concert version, with a difference, of H M S Pinafore. This was the Society’s first performance and therefore fitting that it should be the last. Ro Curtis, who played Josephine in 1979, will be Musical Director and Jason Bell will be Producer, while Lester Shaw will be accompanist. What is needed is a fantastic chorus. So any former members who would like to take part, please contact the Secretary Kath Whiting on 01263 821185 or Jason Bell on 01263 822105. This could be your last chance to sing with the Sheringham Savoyards so do please contact us, we would love to go out with, perhaps, the biggest chorus ever on the Little Theatre Stage, no matter how many headaches it may cause!

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Firstly, I am happy to advise you that Penny, the little cat in the photograph last time, has left for a new home, together with another young cat called Jimbo. Several other cats and kittens have also been chosen including Moya, one of our long term residents. We are particularly pleased that she has finally found a loving home as she and her kittens were dumped on someone’s doorstep in a cardboard box last year. Needless to say, their places have quickly been filled and we still have cats and kittens waiting to join us.

As I look out of my window this evening and see the ground covered in snow it brings to mind the wonderful work our fosterers do. Most of the cats that are in care are housed in pens in their gardens. Whatever the weather the cats need feeding and watering and their pens need to be cleaned and litter trays changed. Hot or cold, wet or windy, their fosterers will be there to care for them. Fortunately all the pens are heated and the cats also have heat pads to keep their beds warm and cosy. The litter tray is outside the housing unit but in extreme conditions the food and water are put inside. Taking the cats to the vets for their checks, to be vaccinated or because they are ill is just another facet of the care they provide. They are also very accommodating when people come to see their charges, as potential new owners. They do all this as well as looking after their families and their own animals, plus some of them go to work too. They really are wonderful, dedicated cat lovers and we really appreciate what they do.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.cats.org.uk/northwalsham for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number.

If, however, you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher).

Council Gallery Hosts New Exhibition North Norfolk District Council’s public art gallery is presenting a new exhibition entitled ‘Coast and Country’ featuring paintings by local artist Karen Rowlands of Roughton, near Cromer.

The exhibition, running until 11 March this year, includes many new paintings of the north Norfolk coast and countryside. The detailed paintings cover a variety of subjects from Stiffkey round to the Broads, each painted with a fascination for the play of light, and an enjoyment of the richness and vitality of colour involved in bringing each view to life.

Karen studied at Ravensbourne College of Art and Design and Loughborough College of Art and Design and her initial wonder at the beauty to be found in Norfolk has developed over 25 years into an enduring love of the county’s coast and countryside.

NNDC seeks to offer opportunities to local artists to display their work in the well-lit first-floor ‘gallery’ area in its Holt Road offices in Cromer, and in turn provides staff and visitors to the building the opportunity to see a variety of different artists’ work. Currently six exhibitions are held annually, open for view to the public during normal office hours, Monday – Thursday 8.30am – 5pm, Wednesday 10am – 5pm, Friday 8.30am – 4.30pm. Paws for thought this winter with Animal Magic Dog Club

Caring for your dog is a year round job, but in the cold weather we need to pay extra attention to the health and wellbeing of our four legged friends.

Here are our top tips on keeping your dog in tip top condition during the winter months: ► Rock salt is used to melt ice on footpaths and may irritate the paw pads. Always rinse and dry your dog's feet after a walk to avoid cracked, sore pads. ► The fur between the toes should be kept short to avoid uncomfortable ice balls forming when out on a frosty walk. ► Dogs with short or fine coats will especially feel the cold; consider keeping them warm in a cosy dog coat. ► Don’t let your dog drink from puddles; they could contain traces of Antifreeze which is poisonous. It smells and tastes good to your dog, but it can be lethal. ► Try to maintain a regular routine with your dog. Although you may not feel like going for a walk on dark wintry mornings and evenings, the exercise will keep you both, happy, healthy and fit. ► Always wear reflective clothing to make yourself visible in the dark. The same applies to your dog; invest in a reflective dog coat, collar or lead. ► Don’t leave your dog outside for long periods of time in cold weather, if it’s too cold for you to sit outside then its too cold for them. ► Always consult your Vet if you are concerned about your dog’s health. Animal Magic Dog Club based near North Walsham is a fun, family orientated club offering a wide range of training for puppies, junior and adult dogs.

For more information on the club and classes available please call Kathy on 01263 720730 or visit our web site www.animal-magix.co.uk

Action Fraud

Norfolk and Suffolk are to join a national scheme aimed at enhancing fraud investigations and cutting the amount of time officers spend taking reports of crime.

On 14 January both forces started using Action Fraud - the UK’s national fraud reporting centre - which will act as a central point of contact for all information about fraud and financially-motivated internet crime.

Instead of officers taking reports themselves, they will redirect victims to Action Fraud where staff will receive reports, on-line or on the telephone. The reporting facility is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week through www.actionfraud.police.uk. There have been over 1 million unique visitors to the Action Fraud website since its inception.

Information provided will be assessed within Action Fraud and where a crime is established, it will be recorded and the victim provided with a national crime reference number. Those crimes and other information reports are then transferred securely each day to the National Fraud Intelligence Bureau (NFIB), City of London Police. There, all crimes and information reports are analysed. This will leave just those crimes where there are actionable lines of enquiry to follow up which will then be returned as ‘packages’ to forces for allocation and further investigation. The data provided to Action Fraud is totally secure and will only be provided to anti-fraud agencies or the police.

All Forces have agreed to participate in the scheme by April 2013. Action Fraud, a service run by the National Fraud Authority with the NFIB will provide numerous benefits:

Thanks

• A single point of contact for reporting all fraud • Joined up intelligence which will lead to more targeted enforcement action • An effective and time-efficient route to reporting fraud • An enhanced preventative approach nationally

Additionally, Action Fraud will free up officer time to focus only on actionable investigations, provide intelligence that can be used for preventative work, and in creating a standardised reporting system will ensure Forces have a greater understanding and awareness of national threats.

Head of the Joint Serious and Organised Crime Directorate, Detective Superintendent Alan McCullough said: “Joining Action Fraud will provide both forces with an enhanced and consistent service to victims of fraud. Where the victim is reporting a crime that requires action there and then, or is assessed to be vulnerable, we will continue to deal with the report as normal. But for all other reports, the victim will make contact with Action Fraud, by logging on to its website or via the telephone. Increased intelligence helps prevent other people from becoming victims themselves your information can help to root out fraudsters and prevent future crimes. In addition, a central collection of crime reports enables seemingly unrelated incidents from around the country to be linked through analysis, helping identify networks of criminals. Clearly, such a system has the potential to save us hundreds of hours spent filling in reports. It provides the public throughout the UK with one single point of contact and will mean that our time is spent investigating and preventing such offences in the first place”. *Telephone reporting to Action Fraud is available on 0300 123 2040. Monday to Friday between 8am to 9pm and Saturday /Sunday between 9am to 5pm

Additionally you can visit the Action Fraud website for more details www.actionfraud.police.uk .

As many of you are aware The Garden Shop in Station Road has changed hands. I extend the new owners my best wishes in their new venture. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all my past customers for their custom and loyalty. Thank you Mr M Jolley 12

THE ACOUSTIC STRAWBS

at the Auden Theatre Holt Friday 22 February at 7.30pm All seats £14 Box Office Tel 01263-713444 THE ACOUSTIC HEARTBEAT OF STRAWBS

The year 2012 marks the 43rd anniversary of the release of the first Strawbs album on A&M Records.

Acoustic Strawbs are David Cousins, Dave Lambert, and Chas Cronk, the front-line of the classic 1970s line-up of Britain’s most successful international folk-rock band, and who tour regularly as Acoustic Strawbs.

In the early 1970s Strawbs scored chart success in Britain with huge albums such as ‘Grave New World’ and ‘Bursting at the Seams’. From the mid-1970s as the group concentrated their attention on the United States and Canada where their albums, including the classics ‘Hero and Heroine’ and ‘Ghosts’, spent over fifty two weeks on the Billboard charts. Strawbs toured with the likes of Santana, Peter Frampton, The Eagles, REO Speedwagon, Joe Walsh, Blue Oyster Cult, King Crimson, and Frank Zappa.

David Cousins, leader of Strawbs, was awarded BPI platinum discs in recognition of worldwide sales of the albums ‘Grave New World’ and ‘Bursting at the Seams’. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts in 2002, and was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award by Rick Wakeman on behalf of the Classic Rock Society.

rarely performed material with considerable energy and thoughtful arrangements.”(Record Collector) “Hearing the brilliant Strawbs [at the Edmonton Folk Festival] was like a tutorial in UK folk music from the past 40 years. (Edmonton Sun) “Unlike many groups that are past their commercial prime and churn out inferior, dispirited versions of the hits from their glory days, the Acoustic Strawbs stand out as a band that performs their old material with passion and precision. Furthermore, they have broken new ground by harnessing the power of their electric incarnation in an acoustic setting.” (Chicago Tribune) www.strawbsweb.co.uk

Rick Wakeman played with the Strawbs for two years before moving on to achieve world-wide success with Yes, and as a solo artist. The much-loved Sandy Denny made an album with the Strawbs before she joined Fairport Convention.

Acoustic Strawbs shows receive rave reviews – “Carefully selecting their repertoire from less than obvious sources they invest the

moved back to Norfolk and joined the firm as a partner engineer. The office and administration was firstly managed by Ray’s daughter, Emma, and now by Chris’s wife, Heidi. It is important to them to keep the company family led and run to enable a more personal approach. Over the intervening years they have become specialised in installation work and plumbing as well as adding qualifications in LPG and Oil (OFTEC) heating, offering a more comprehensive service to the North Norfolk area. The 'of Sheringham' part of the name was added a few years ago to ensure a unique, local and community-based feel to the business, something they feel is important.

Now changes are afoot - founder Ray is going to take retirement as from 31 January. To enable the company to maintain it’s current high level of service though, more staff were needed. Joining the firm is Simon Patrick, a fully qualified Gas Engineer and former sub-contractor for the company. Filling out the team is Dan Birchnall, who was taken on as Trainee Heating Engineer in 2011, a pleasant, local lad, with great customer skills and commitment.

Sheringham Country Market

Sheringham Country Market would like to thank all their customers, friends and producers for the magnificent fundraising effort for Quidenham Children’s Hospice during December. Our first event was the Christmas Fair which raised £144 from the raffle and sales of coffee and mince pies.

We then took part in the Christmas Tree Festival at St Andrew’s Church. Donations to the tree raised £219 and the Cake & Bake stall raised another £200.

So we have been able to send the grand total of £563 to Quidenham Children’s Hospice.

Sheringham Country Market is held at the St John Hall in Wyndham Street from 10am until 11.30am every first and third Thursday of the month. We sell home baked cakes and savouries, preserves, fresh organic seasonal fruit and vegetables, flowers and plants. Also a wide variety of crafts and refreshments are always available.

If you haven’t yet been to see us do some along and have a look. Our next market is on Thursday 7 February. New producers and helpers would be very welcome.

East Runton Funday Supports Five Local Good Causes A presentation evening was held last month at The White Horse in East Runton to distribute the proceeds from a fun day which was held in the village last August bank holiday weekend.

The amazing figure of £1,664.99 had been raised and was donated to five very worthy causes: • East Anglian Air Ambulance received £400 • Cromer RNLI received £250 • East Runton playing field (where the event was held) received £250 • Runton Parish Council received £500 for new village play equipment • and Friends of East Runton received £264.99 towards the cost of purchasing a cabinet to house a defibrillator in the village.

The event was well attended and warm applause was given to the Funday Committee for their hard work in putting on the event. Sadly the committee has now disbanded and the prospect of another Funday is not likely for the immediate future.

As is often the case in such things a shortage of volunteers, a mass of paperwork and red tape and inclement weather conspired against the

hardy band. They had however enjoyed their year organising the event and were pleased to have been able to support five local good causes from their efforts.

On a lighter note, the donation towards the defibrillator cabinet allowed Friends of East Runton to go ahead and purchase it as another very generous donation of £600 has been received from a village resident who, when they heard about the appeal in the Parish newsletter, insisted on donating the balance immediately!!

Our first meeting of 2013 was held on the evening of Tuesday, 8 January when the artist from Cromer, Peter Longstaff, came to give us a painting demonstration, and to talk about his life.

taken Peter’s mother had the drug Thalidomide for morning sickness when she was pregnant with him, and as a result Peter was born with no arms. However, Peter emphasised to us that despite this handicap, he had enjoyed a normal childhood. Being one of a family of five children he soon learned to fend for himself, went to a normal school, and became independent. He was born in Stockton-on-Tees in 1962, but often holidayed in Norfolk with his uncle, who owned a pig farm. When he left school he and his father also set up a pig starting with two pigs from farm in Norfolk, Norwich market and ending up 21 years later with around 2,000. Peter learned to drive an adapted tractor and continued farming until 1999 when it became difficult to make a living from pig farming in this country, and so he sold up.

Peter had been good at art as a schoolboy, so he decided to take some more tuition at Norwich City College. Soon the Mouth and

Foot Painting Association got in touch with him and, seeing his work, made him a Student Member. This meant that they paid him a monthly stipend to buy his painting materials and help with his living costs. The MFPA has 36 five of them Full members in this country, Members, two Associate Members, and the rest students. Peter hopes to become an Associate Member soon. Every year the UK members gather for a conference in Hampshire, to which Peter was invited. Peter was quite nervous before the first meeting since he had not had much contact with disabled people in his life. However, he found the experience to be humbling, meeting people who were much more disabled than himself, some with only a little movement in their necks after terrible accidents. Peter realised that he was comparatively lucky, since his skill with foot manipulation had enabled him to lead an almost normal life.

Peter’s paintings are published as Christmas and Easter cards, but for some strange reason only in Sweden, Norway, and Denmark. He brought some of his lovely pictures to show us, depicting woodland scenes, landscapes, and still lifes. As he talked Peter painted a simple landscape for us, holding the brush between his toes with his paper and paints on the floor.

Afterwards Peter was happy to answer our many questions, and told us of some of the odd things that had happened to him. On one occasion he was driving his specially adapted car out of Sheringham when the police pulled him over and accused him of driving with no hands. When Peter explained that he had no hands, the officer was lost for words! Peter is a charming and very natural gentleman, and it was a pleasure and honour for us all to meet him.

You may have read recently that the Department of Health has announced that it will pay eighty million pounds over ten years to the Thalidomide Trust that supports the 325 surviving people in England who have been damaged by the drug. As they age, their needs will become greater. The German company Grunenthal that marketed the drug has never paid any compensation to its victims, or even offered an apology. Peter could need new hip and knee joints in the future due to arthritis caused by the extra strain that he has been forced to put on them for many years, but all he would really like from the drug firm is an apology. Thankfully, he has a devoted partner and loving family to support him.

Erratum: In an earlier report it was stated that E.A.C.H. was hoping to open a new hospice in North Norfolk. In fact it is a new shop for fund raising that they hope to open. Kim Wordie

Angel Packs Update ANGEL PACKS GO FULL CIRCLE...

When we set the Angel Pack Initiative up in Sheringham in 2012 it was because a gentleman had fallen in Sheringham High Street in the February and had to wait for 46 minutes for an ambulance - in the end it was a paramedic who attended after 46 minutes. Far too long in the cold, we thought at the time... The Angel Pack Initiative was launched and has proved to be extremely useful!

Then ironically, on a very cold Monday 18 December last year, the same gentleman fell again in Sheringham, on Cromer Road, pulling his wife over with him. After a very long wait an ambulance arrived. He had broken his hip and is still in hospital. His wife is on crutches and a frame but is now home!

An Angel Pack was used to help them and she is full of praise for the Angel Pack Initiative. We wish them both a speedy recovery!

COAST FESTIVAL 25 October – 2 November www.casaf.co.uk

On Sunday 23 December an Angel Pack was also used to assist the victim of a car accident near Thursford.

At about 5.30pm a car overturned on the Sheringham to Fakenham road near Thursford. It was cold damp and dark. The lady, who had been assisted out of the overturned vehicle by a passing nurse was sitting at the roadside in the dark waiting for an ambulance. I was passing and had an Angel Pack with me. I stopped and we used the foil blankets, torch, wet wipes and swabs and the groundsheet to make her more comfortable. I have made a donation to the Angel Pack funds to cover the items used as it was not a Sheringham lady, but it was lovely to be able to help! Thank you to all of the businesses and individuals who have contributed to the Angel Pack Initiative! It works!! Thank you!

Multi-Faceted Popular Performer Makes His First Visit to Sheringham

An Evening With Richard Digance’ sees the multi-talented artist appear for the first time in a more intimate setting at heringham Little Theatre this month.

Richard Digance is a rare performer in that he's respected by comedians for his original material and by musicians for being an accomplished performer/guitarist. His loyal following confirms his wide appeal, from the younger generation attracted by both his guitar playing and the fact he has inspired many modern-day performers, to the super-loyal who have followed Richard since the time he had his own ITV series and even further when he started out in folk clubs.

His evergreen career has been acknowledged through numerous awards within both the music and entertainment industries, from a BAFTA Nomination as a TV entertainer to a Gold Award from The British Academy of Composers and Songwriters. He has supported Steve Martin in the USA, Robin Williams at The London Palladium and is 22

included in The Virgin Anthology of Songwriters for his important contribution to British comedy songwriting. When presented with the Gold Award from the British Academy of Composers and Songwriters he was described as someone who for half a century has travelled the world with just a guitar and an immense collection of stories gathered through his own experiences.

He has survived all trends with his two and a half hour one-man show, his summer festival appearances in the UK, the United States, Canada and Dubai, his cruise work and television appearances. He is both an accomplished musician, rated by many as one of Britain's greatest acoustic guitarists, inspired by his good friend Ralph McTell, and an entertainer who many younger comedians, including Ross Noble, claim as one of their major influences. On his own ITV Saturday-night show Richard has played guitar with Queen's Brian May, The Moody Blues, Status Quo, Chris de Burgh, Juan Martin, Marc Cohn and Elkie Brooks.

‘An Evening With Richard Digance’ is at Sheringham Little Theatre on Sunday 17 February, doors 7.30 pm, show 8pm. Tickets £12 from Box Office 01263 822347 www.sheringhamlittletheatre.com

More work needed to improve dementia diagnosis in Norfolk An estimated 8,239 people in Norfolk have undiagnosed dementia, according to a report by the Alzheimer’s Society.

New figures released by the charity reveal wide variations in how many people are receiving a diagnosis of dementia in Britain. Diagnosis rates range from 31.6% to 75.5%, with Norfolk near the bottom at 36.3%.

Commenting, North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb said “It is good that diagnosis rates in Norfolk have improved on last year, but there is still a lot of work to do. If other areas can improve their rates of diagnosis, there is no reason why we shouldn’t be able to do so here in Norfolk as well. Early diagnosis can make a huge difference to people’s quality of life. I met with Willie Cruickshank, director of the Norfolk and Suffolk Dementia Alliance last Friday and was immensely impressed by what I heard. Although official diagnosis rates may understate the true position, there is still a massive challenge but it is clear that Norfolk

and Suffolk's Dementia Alliance is leading the way in setting about transforming the care of people with dementia.”

The Coalition Government launched its ‘dementia challenge’ in March last year to make a difference to the lives of people with dementia and their families and carers. This includes aims to increase awareness of the condition and rates of diagnosis. The Government is providing £50million funding to NHS trusts and local authorities to help tailor hospitals and care homes to the needs of people with dementia.

Meanwhile, the Government is looking to recruit a million Dementia Friends by 2015. People can register their interest in learning more about the condition so that

they have a better understanding of dementia and how they can help people who suffer from it in their own community.

Commenting, Norman Lamb MP said “I’ve signed up to become a Dementia Friend, and would encourage others to do the same. Many of us take for granted how easy it is to do everyday things, but for people with dementia simple tasks like visiting the shops can become hugely daunting. By gaining a better understanding of the condition, we are much better equipped to provide a helping hand to loved ones, friends and neighbours.”

THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER EARLY COLOUR IN THE GARDEN odd bloom out of their normal season.

January is not usually conducive to gardening. The first month of the year can bring wind and rain, frost and snow and freezing temperatures but there are the odd days when the sun shines, the air is warm and gardeners can persuade themselves that spring will come.

Some gardeners walk around their plots in the New Year and count the number of plants bearing flowers. Many of these flowers are small and subtle and would hardly be noticed in mid-summer but on a chilly January day, when the garden is bare there is time to study the early blooms and marvel at their exquisite form. Some people are able to collect over twenty different flowers as they explore their winter garden but I was not able to rival this despite a few plants that were throwing out the

I was only able to pick eight different flowers (see photograph)so my New Year resolution is to plant more winter flowering plants to enjoy next year. The following plants are worth consideration... Viburnum x bodnantense ‘Dawn’- a vigorous plant featuring sugar pink flowers. Prune to keep it under control. Needs full sun or partial shade. Sarcocca hookeriana – upright and compact with fine foliage, young stems flushed with pink purple and with flowers tinged the same hue. Undemanding but be sure to plant it near a path or your front door to appreciate the wonderful scent. Lonicera x purpusii – The winter honeysuckle that produces small lemon scented flowers. Needs plenty of room to spread. Full sun or partial shade. Iris unguicularis (Algerian Iris)- Looks delicate but is really tough. Best sited in stony ground at the bottom of a sunny wall. The flower buds can be cut to open indoors. Mahonia japonica ‘ Charity’– Large shrub with spiny leaves that produces fragrant pale yellow flowers that smell of Lily of the Valley. Easy to grow. Daphne bholua – Upright shrub that is good for small gardens. The variety ‘Jacqueline

Postill’ is evergreen with intensely fragrant flowers that are deep purple-pink outside and white within. Cornus mas – A late winter bloomer with small bright yellow flowers. Needs full sun or partial shade.

As I write this article the first snow of winter is falling and I wonder what the next few months will bring but whatever the weather January should be regarded as a time of hope and promise, the days are getting longer and precocious little snowdrops, crocuses, violets and primroses are promising spring. There are fat buds among the great coloured leaves of the bergenias, and new leaves are pushing through the ground everywhere. Things are happening above the surface and below, and for the gardener another year of thrills and adventure is beginning.

If you are interested in extending your own range of winter flowering plants make a note that on February 21st , Trevor Harrison of South Creake Nurseries will be giving expert, professional advice on introducing early colour in the garden to members of the Sheringham Horticultural Society. Everyone is welcome to attend in St Josephs Parish Centre commencing at 7.30pm. (£2 charge for non members). Bob Wilkinson

THE FINAL COUNTDOWN

So it’s goodbye from me – and it’s goodbye from him!

We’ve finally decided we’ve done our bit now after ten long years of putting up the lights in the town, and we won’t be doing it again. For our last time out on the streets we were fairly lucky with the weather almost right up until the end, apart from one very rainy day and then again on the day of the switch on, which started out fine but slowly degenerated as the afternoon wore on. We even had some sun along the way although it was still often cold, but thankfully no snow and ice until all the lights were safely down and stored away. We did get some strong winds in the few days afterwards, which resulted in the aluminium frame on one of the big lamp post motifs snapping all the way down, so we had an anxious 48 hours until we were able to get the cherry picker back in order to take it down. And this year we were very pleased to once again be able to put up the usual strings around the Theatre frontage, now that some pigeon deterrent spikes have been put in place.

We did have some unexpected problems which made things very difficult this year, especially with the cherry picker which is clearly past it’s best now and would only work for a couple of hours at a time before the battery had to be recharged. This stopped us in our tracks on several occasions and caused us a lot of frustration and disruption. We also had a major problem for the first time with some health and safety issues at the old Post Office building which have never been a problem before, and although we eventually resolved everything it did result in time being wasted, and tempers being frayed. Many thanks to Nick Grice for stepping in and working with Nicky to ensure that all the relevant paperwork got done so that we were given permission to finish the job.

Tel: 01263 837901

But by far the worst issue was a hit and run incident on Remembrance Sunday involving the cherry picker outside the Theatre. We gave the driver’s number plate to the police but have never heard anything back from them, so clearly they aren’t treating it as serious, which is extremely disturbing as people were badly shaken up although fortunately not injured.

A big thanks to everyone involved in our team of workers, and to all those local businesses who supported us. Janet Farrow from the Upcher Community Partnership again put a lot of effort into the organisation, along with the Open Door Community Arts Group who did lots of the organising as well as doing the lovely artwork around the town clock. And thanks to Erica and Jeannie for their fundraising event at the Burlington, which sadly neither Nicky nor I were able to attend as we were away. And our very heartfelt gratitude to Straits, Rallentando, Seafare, Roy Boys and the Lunch Box, for giving us very welcome food and drinks on a regular basis, and a massive thank you to Lisa and Keith at Barneys Newsagents who offered us whatever help we needed, and we were especially indebted to them for supplying us with the electricity to recharge the cherry picker on more than one occasion, without which we would really have been stuck to get the work finished.

And of course extra special thanks to all of the people who helped out in different ways or turned up whenever they could – to Paul Todd, Eddie Free, Peter Evans, Michael Joyce, Maureen Haslam, Mark Hill, Cris Glover, Graham Deans, Martyn Jackson, Ray Dennis and Andy Sawyer. And a big thank you to all those who went up in the cherry picker, especially Jonny Hayman and Simon Burns who performed their usual mastery of the

machine under the difficult circumstances and did as many of the sessions as they were able to, helped out by their friend Aaron on one occasion. Because of their other commitments we did have to call on other people some of the time, so thanks to Paul Todd and to Nicky himself for filling in when necessary, not forgetting Maureen Haslam who went up on just the one memorable occasion and will probably never do so again judging from the noise she made while she was up there! I’m particularly grateful to Paul Todd and Eddie Free who not only came along to all the main weekend sessions but who also stepped in to be Santa’s little helpers more than once at other times when I had to work and couldn’t be available. And last but not least to Becky Read, who came along on our very last session when we were all getting to a bit tired and jaded, and she made the last lap much more fun than it would otherwise have been with her irrepressible cheeriness and energy.

And as always, and for the very last time, a final very big thank you to Nicky Royle whose decade of unstinting hard work has ensured that the town has been lit up in a variety of ways. Neither he nor I actually celebrate Christmas ourselves, but we have always felt that it would be a great shame not to have any decorations in the town, so I do hope that other people will come forward to take on the job. There are lots of ways to help – it’s not all about going up ladders otherwise I’d have never got involved, so please have a think about what you might be able to do, and get in touch with whoever takes on the job this year. Good luck from us to them.
