All money raised is being donated to Sheringham Playpark Revamp who said ‘We are truly touched that our project has been chosen to benefit from such an important local event. The number of prizes that have been donated and their worth show just how well loved and respected the Wright family are. We are extremely grateful as this could make such a big difference to our fundraising. We are amazed with the support that the local community are showing us and it makes us ever more determined to achieve our goal of providing the town with a new, modern playpark and communal area suitable for all ages and abilities’.

News from the White Horse Overstrand with Head Chef Nathan Boon
With warmer weather forecast and the light evenings giving everyone time to enjoy their gardens I thought I would give you a great recipe for a great Barbecue Sauce.
Of course you could always leave the barbecue and come along to the White Horse and enjoy a superb meal, relax in our garden whole the children play.
Don’t forget our charity car wash raising money for Nelson’s Journey on Saturday 27 July. We are serving Hot Bacon Rolls from 8am as well as our usual White Horse
Breakfast so while the volunteers wash your car you can enjoy some good food and a chat. From 10am we will be offering a slice of delicious homemade cake and a coffee so if you missed breakfast you can still enjoy a snack while waiting for your car to be washed.
Our usual Bar and Restaurant Menu will also be available from 12noon, so why not make it lunch at the White Horse? Bring your friends and their cars and turn it into a car wash party!
The Car Wash is just £5 per car with all proceeds going to the charity. Car Wash opens at 8am until 2pm.
“Help for Heroes” Charity Car Wash at Groveland Farm Shop

You don’t need to book, just turn up on the day.

The shop is run by locals who enjoy sharing their expertise and skills and are always happy to help with tips and advice. Sauté on a low heat for about 10 minutes.
Add all remaining ingredients and bring to the boil. Simmer uncovered until the liquid has reduced and thickened, about 15 to 25 minutes.
Add more Jack Daniels if a stronger flavor is desired.
Great as a marinade or dipping sauce.
Society Coffee Mornings
We were extremely lucky that one of our members, Mike Bennett, a local resident, was able to step in at the last moment to give the talk to the Society. We had been meant to have a talk on archaeology but the speaker had moved to Suffolk without telling us.
Mike Bennett gave us a most interesting and informative talk on the history of sugar. He was until fairly recently the technical director of Tate & Lyle so there was no-one better informed on the subject.
The first mention of sugar was by an admiral from Alexander the Great's fleet where he reported a "reed that makes honey without bees". That was in Pakistan and the sugar cane gradually moved around the globe to Indonesia, Malaysia and as far as Australia.
The talk was entitled "Sugar and Spice and Things Not so Nice". The "Not so Nice" being the slave trade where 12 million Africans were shipped across the Atlantic to the sugar cane fields of mainly the Caribbean Islands.
A good deal of our sugar these days comes from beet, much of which is grown in this area. One thing that did surprise many people was that sugar cane is a grass!
Everyone is welcome and we look forward to seeing many of you there.

St. Peter’s Church in Sheringham was the venue for a meeting of clergy and lay people who had come to listen to representatives of the ‘Churches Together’ initiatives which are currently active in Sheringham, Cromer and the surrounding districts. The meeting heard about diverse and thriving projects including the following. -
The bereavement Support Group is based at the Salvation Army Citadel in Sheringham. The group provides an opportunity for a bereaved person (of any age,) to visit the Citadel on Friday mornings between 10am – 12noon. If you visit the group you don’t need to say anything about your loss until you are ready to do so. You can just sit and have a chat over coffee until you feel able to discuss how you feel. When you’re ready to talk about your loss– there will be someone who will listen and be ready to help you. The telephone phone number for the Bereavement Support Group is 07900382186.
Operation Christmas Child is a local initiative that contributes to the work of a national charity known as the Samaritan’s Purse. The purpose of Operation Christmas Child is to provide shoe boxes filled with gifts which are sent to vulnerable children throughout the world. Churches across the town and beyond participate in this appeal which is headed by the Salvation Army. To contact the Salvation Army in Sheringham telephone: 01263 822514 or email: alan.read@salvationarmy.org.uk:

Friends International in Norwich is a Christian group with a local link in Sheringham. One of its objects is to find hosts for international students studying at UEA. The hosts will offer students occasional opportunities for hospitality and friendship. A host might invite a student(s) for a meal or give student(s) the chance to visit our beautiful local countryside and rich cultural heritage. The Food bank is continuing to flourish. It now serves the Sheringham and Cromer area and has recently extended its reach to Aylsham and North Walsham. Although it is quite sad that a Food Bank is needed in this day and age it is nevertheless heartening to hear the statistics for the charity’s first year of operation in and around Cromer and Sheringham. There are more than sixty trained, registered volunteers drawn from local communities and churches. The number of people who have been allocated food since last August is in excess of eleven hundred people. The donations (in cash and kind) received are in excess of thirteen tonnes, (the money equivalent is approximately £22,000.) Public support for this project has been amazing! Please continue to give generously to the very needy living in our community. For more information about food/money donation, food entitlement and collection days and times telephone 07826 376343. (Monday to Saturday 10am-5pm.) or visit www.cromerdistrict.foodbank.org.uk
For more details of the work and charitable fundraising initiatives established by the Churches Together visit www.networknorwich.co.uk where you can see a resumé of regular charitable fund-raising activities and events.
Postscript : Another charitable organisation which doesn’t come under the ‘Churches Together’ initiative but which is nevertheless non-denominational is ‘Christian Solidarity Worldwide.’ Its aim is to seek justice for those who wish to practise Christianity. Article 18 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights says that people have the right to practise openly the religion of their choice. Sadly, this is not possible or at least is very difficult in many countries. To find out more go to – www.csw.org.uk/operation18

EAAA fundraiser coffee morning in Weybourne
The ladies of Weybourne are once again supporting the East Anglian Air Ambulance with a coffee morning fund raiser in the Weybourne Village Hall on Sunday 4 August from 10am.
In the past two years over £5,000 has been raised for EAAA by the ladies, and at their coffee morning there will be a variety of attractions to tempt allcomers. A major item will be an opportunity to acquire a doll's house, kindly donated to the EAAA for a one off raffle.
There will be a grand raffle of many donated items, an instant draw of quality prizes, a children's tombola, a Guess Teddy's Cycle Ride starting point, a bottle tombola, a book & jigsaw sale, a bric-a-brac stall and a cake and home produce stall as well as a refreshment area with homemade goodies.
Last year the ladies raised £1300 from the event and they hope to improve on this figure in 2013. Everybody is most welcome to come and enjoy the friendly atmosphere and help raise lots of money for the EAAA. Jamie Edghill has kindly agreed to attend and it is hoped that he will be amazed by the sum raised.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
owners make is to get their pet neutered or we will take it back.
In a matter of days we have gone from having a reasonable number of kittens in care to having far too many, with lots more waiting to come in. The last two litters, totalling 10 kittens, arrived together with their mums, having been abandoned by their previous owners with the poor little mother cats having to fend not only for themselves but also their babies. In both of these instances other people cared enough to offer them shelter, contacted us to see whether we could possibly take them in and fed and looked after them until we had room. We have already had three other mums with four kittens each that arrived for the same reason and a further three young cats (and they really are not much more than kittens themselves) who have had kittens but not brought them out into the open yet. We do wonder why people get a pet when they are not prepared to look after them properly and abandon them without concern for their animal’s welfare. Fortunately they are still in a minority as most people act more responsibly. However, one thing we can be certain of is the fact they did not get them from us as one of the promises new
Other kittens have arrived from multi-cat households where the owners have let their cats breed and suddenly found they cannot cope with the numbers, and some where the kittens have been found with no mother in sight and the little ones have been too young to fend for themselves (three were even abandoned on a lady’s drive at one day old). We also see some where the owner contacts us because their cat has had kittens and they want to make sure they get good homes. Often the cat itself is very young and the owner has not been aware that she could become pregnant at such a young age. Cats can become pregnant from about 4 months old and can also have another litter while still feeding an existing one. We had experience of this last year when a young mum and her 9 week old kitten came into care, the kitten was re-homed and the next day mum produced another litter. I could provide lots more examples, but I won’t. However, I will just say, please get your cats neutered before you find you have a problem.

Little Theatre Curtain-raiser for new Probus Programme
Cromer and Sheringham Probus Club started off their new programme of talks on 2 July with a presentation about the Sheringham Little Theatre by Tony Nelson. Tony has played an important part in the theatre’s history himself and his narrative interwove the history of the theatre with that of the town itself. His performance of the story clearly demonstrated his passion for both and was enthusiastically applauded by the members and guests present. The vote of thanks was proposed by Mike Warner.
The new Club Chairman, Dave Vickery, is delighted with the speakers and subjects booked throughout his year in office, saying “I am extremely grateful to Tony and all of the others who will be giving up their time to prepare and deliver these talks. Most ask the club to make a charitable donation in lieu of a fee. We always invite them to join us for the lunch which enables them to get to know some of the audience before they present”.
News from Shannock Court
We had a fabulous response to the Shannock Court MacMillan Sale and have to thank all the residents, families and friends who supported us by baking, selling and buying.
Dave also expressed his intention to raise the local profile of Probus “Joining was extremely valuable to me when I moved into the area. As well as the fellowship, it gave me the opportunity to ask other members about what goes on in the vicinity and I found the talks on local subjects particularly informative. The programme of talks is designed to be relevant both to newcomers and established residents and some of the general topics have turned out to be far more interesting than I expected”.
Membership of the club is open to retired or nearly retired gentlemen and there is no requirement for members to live in either of the towns. Members meet on the first Tuesday of each month at the Links Hotel in West Runton for a chat in the bar before enjoying a 3-course lunch, coffee and then the talk.
Whilst membership is restricted to gentlemen, ladies may be invited for the December (Christmas lunch) and May meetings. A source said “this appears to work well for all concerned as the ladies enjoy those two events but look forward to some time without us through the rest of the year”.
Any gentleman who would be eligible to join is welcome to come to any of the meetings as a visitor, but it is essential to book at least a couple of days in advance on 01263 824306 so that the Lunch Secretary can advise the hotel of numbers. Calling also provides an opportunity to ask any questions and find out who to look out for at the hotel and when.
The next meeting is on Tuesday 6 August and will feature a presentation on the history of Overstrand by Peter Stibbons, who has recently produced a DVD on that subject.
Mary Bloom and Angela Hailstone who manned the coffee and cake stall.
The coffee and cake stall, along with plants, books, bric-a-brac and raffle broke lasts year’s record of £411 and raised a staggering £425.42!
We thank the MacMillan nurses that visit us on a regular basis and are pleased to assist them in this worthwhile cause.

'Protect Our Post' campaign launched to save Royal Mail from privatisation Denise Burke, chair of North Norfolk Labour
North Norfolk residents are being encouraged to call on government ministers to halt the sale of Royal Mail, through a new campaign launched earlier this month.
Protect Our Post is the latest campaign in a growing national movement which speaks out against the government’s proposals to sell off our country’s postal service.
Campaigners fears that the consequences of the privatisation of Royal Mail will be dire for rural areas such as north Norfolk, with services potentially being limited or stopped in our villages, isolating our increasing elderly population who cannot travel to nearby towns. Already the firm is being “fattened up” by increasing prices to push up profits ahead of its sale.
Party, said “There is a growing momentum speaking out against the government’s plans for the sell-off of Royal Mail across the country, and we are pleased to be playing our part in north Norfolk. We believe these plans will be particularly dire for north Norfolk, a rural area with an increasing elderly population, because the services in the villages that do not make a profit are likely to be the first to go. Already the company is being fattened up by increasing the costs of postal services, and we fear this will continue to rise after privatisation.
These plans, which were supported by our MP in his previous role as minister for postal affairs, are continuing to gather pace and we fear Royal Mail will be sold before the end of the year. This is why we are asking residents to register their anger online or through our postcards at our street stalls."
North Norfolk Labour Party, who are behind the campaign, have been on the streets of north Norfolk talking to shoppers about what is happening to one of our country’s most-valued assets. They are inviting residents to sign the online petition at www. protectourpost.com, The Sheringham Horticultural and will be on the Summer Flower & Produce Show is streets with more stalls in the coming taking place on August 2nd & 3rd weeks.

See all 70 lifebuoys together for one time only – and buy one… or two!
North Norfolk has been awash with 70 decorated lifebuoys since April as part of the Cromer and Sheringham Crab & Lobster Festival’s annual art trail and you will soon have the chance to own one!
For one day only on Sunday 25th August they will all be on show together before being auctioned off to the highest bidder, raising funds for local charities. On the same day the Festival will also be hosting their annual World Pier Crabbing Championships from 10am – 1pm as well as hosting an array of local craft stalls along the prom.
Auction on Sunday 25th August at 2pm.
From Fakenham to Cromer and Sheringham the lifebuoys are on the trail until Friday 16th August before they all go into the Grand Lifebuoy
The auction will be hosted by auctioneer Martyn Fox on Cromer Pier Forecourt who has helped raise over £24,000 on behalf of the Festival through the previous three Festival charity auctions. The auction will be the first and only time people will have a chance to see all the lifebuoys displayed together which will be on view from 11am on the day of the auction.
The 70 lots on sale, sponsored by local businesses and tricolated by local
people, include lifebuoys decorated by artists Claire Knight, Jenny Griffin and Lizzie Riches as well as schools and community groups.
The trail has received wondrous attention from locals and visitors alike who have taken on the challenge of the trail since it began. Schools, youth groups, business, organisations and many talented local people have produced a stunning array of quirky lifebuoys, people have painted, knitted, printed, sewn, adorned and transformed their lifebuoys in an array of methods and all will be up for auction.
The History Man Needs You! What do you think is the most important date in Sheringham’s history and why? Andy Tanser would love to know!
Andy is a carver, designer and sculptor based near Cambridge who over the last few months has been working with local people to come up with and develop ideas for the public art that forms part of the new Tesco development on Cromer Road. This will mainly be installed on the new pedestrian link from the supermarket to Station Road.
By kind arrangement with the Little Theatre on Station Road, Andy and his colleague Andrea Bassil will be in the theatre’s ‘Hub’ café and meeting place on Tuesday 30 July to talk to local residents and representatives of local groups to hear what aspect of the town’s history is particularly important to them.
Andy will run a competition for the best drawing about this aspect of history, with prizes of £50, £25 and £10 for the best and runners-up. So pop along and see Andy between 10.30am and 3.30pm (individuals) and 4pm to 7.30pm for local organisations and groups.

North Norfolk rental market buoyed by homeowners jumping ship According to figures released this week by the English Housing Survey, more people are quitting home ownership to become private tenants, than are leaving the private rented sector to become home owners.
The survey, which estimates a total of 22m homeowners in England moved into rented accommodation last year, stated that the number of owner-occupied homes fell from 14.8m in 2005/6 to 14.4m in 2011/12. At the same time, the number of privately rented households increased from 2.4m to 3.8m. Rechenda Smith, Lettings Manager at Harrisons said: “We are seeing a definite increase in homeowners coming off the housing ladder and moving into rented accommodation for a whole host of reasons. There are those who start off renting for a short period of time between house sales who like the hassle-free aspect of being a tenant and stay on, people going through relationship breakdowns who divide the funds and go into long-term rented accommodation, and retired people who sell their homes and use the funds as a nest egg to see out the rest of their days and want all maintenance issues to be dealt with by a landlord.”
The English Housing Survey underlines that home ownership levels have continued to drop as the number of households in private rented accommodation has grown.
Established in 2010, Harrisons are licensed members of the National Approved Lettings Scheme and rents and manages hundreds of rental properties across the region each month. Rechenda continued: “The rental market is significantly buoyant at the moment. For example, last month we rented a three bed semi detached property in Sheringham
which sparked a bidding war – we did a full day of viewings, every applicant wanted to take it and it went for £100 above the asking price over a three year tenancy. This is fairly unusual in the world of lettings but as demand outstripping supply, anything goes. We also had our record number of move-ins last month, with a high proportion of applicants coming out of the housing ladder, attracted to the convenience of renting rather than home owning.”

Gresham’s athletes bring home the medals
Pupils from Gresham’s Prep and Senior Schools have been put through their paces this term with a number of pupils qualifying for the East Area Prep Schools and National Athletics Championships.
On 6 June, Gresham’s Prep School sent a team to compete at the East Area Prep Schools Athletics Championships. The team performed very well and the following pupils qualified, by coming either first or second in their event. As a result they earned a place to compete at the National Finals at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham on 2 July.
The qualifiers were: Archie Jones (U12 Discus), Abbie Ulph (U12 Discus), Bennett Withers (U13 High Jump), Jonathan West (U13 Discus), Amy Matthews (U13 High Jump), Martha Combe (pictured) (U14 Shot), Georgina Bowett (U14 800m), Daisy Rennison (U14 Triple Jump).
Following the National Prep Schools Athletics Finals on 2 July, Gresham's Prep won 5 medals: 2 Gold, 2 Silver and 1 Bronze. Martha Combe of Bayfield won the U.14 Shot, Amy Matthews of Hempstead won the U.13 High Jump, Bennett Withers of Aldborough was 2nd in the U.13 High Jump, Archie Jones of Little Witchingham was 2nd in the U.12 Discus and Abigail Ulph of Heydon achieved 3rd place in the U.12 Discus.
To add to this success, Senior School pupil William Dugdale from Kelling was selected to represent Norfolk at the National Schools' Athletics Championships in Birmingham on 5/6 July.
William, who recently competed at the County Championships, won the Junior Boys' High Jump clearing the national qualifying height of 1m 72. Only 31 athletes in Norfolk across six age groups (boys and girls) have achieved the national qualifying standard this season and Norfolk can only select 25 athletes for their National Schools' squad. The School is therefore delighted that William was selected to represent Norfolk in this team.

North Norfolk Foreshore Team ready for the summer!
As temperatures rise along the north Norfolk coast, the North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) Foreshore team is gearing up for what they hope will be the busy summer season ahead.
Michael Clarke, a member of the NNDC Foreshore team for ten years, and David Rigby, a relative newcomer with just two years to his name, have the enviable task of patrolling the district’s seaside promenades at Sheringham and Mundesley (Michael), and Cromer (David), helping, advising and supporting everyone having a day out at the coast.
The jobs of the Foreshore team, which has been in existence since the early 1990s, include overseeing NNDC’s seaside chalet lettings, checking the condition of the proms, working closely with the three towns’ RNLI Lifeguards, and monitoring the cleanliness of their promenade ‘patches’.
NNDC Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member
for Corporate Assets, Rhodri Oliver, said, “The North Norfolk coast is unbeatable at any time of year and we want to ensure that everyone enjoys their visit to our coastal towns. Few places in the country can match North Norfolk’s performance on cleanliness and our promenades are the envy of most. Our Foreshore team is there to help and assist, and to check that everything is as everyone would expect, and they do a wonderful job.”
One regular issue they have to deal with is inconsiderate dog owners who allow their dogs to foul public areas, although this problem is diminishing as NNDC’s on-going ‘No Messing’ campaign, which tells dog-owners in no uncertain terms to ‘pick it up or face a fine’, begins to take effect.
in the busy summer months. All three proms provide the opportunity for visitors and local residents to enjoy themselves by the sea and they can be crowded with families, especially in the school holidays. Michael and David are keen to encourage people to have fun, that’s what visiting the seaside is all about, but this should not be at the expense of the enjoyment of others, so while cycling, skateboarding and other sports are welcome on the proms, they will always try to make sure that anyone engaged in these or any other activities is behaving appropriately and respecting other people’s enjoyment of the space.
Another is general behaviour on the proms, particularly

A Modern Monstrance Challenges Conventional Thought Does meditative religious symbolism matter in an age of secular pleasures, rolling news and instant sound bites?
Well, local glass artists, Annie Lloyd and Susan Purser Hope have certainly created something to make you stop and think in “A Modern Monstrance”. This was recently launched as part of the hugely successful Joined Up Art 2013 exhibition held in the Narthex at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist in Norwich. As Annie Lloyd explains, “During a performance of Haydn’s ‘The Creation’ in London's Roman Catholic Cathedral, I found herself considering the significance of a Monstrance and especially the central space and what might be accessed through it.” The alliance with fellow glass artist, Susan Purser Hope, has allowed the two of them to explore this in depth within a modern context. This was especially timely with the ordination of the new Bishop of East Anglia on 16 July. The work is a flamboyant and jubilant challenge made in fused and slumped glass. Standing over 6ft tall, the sculpture is suspended on a black metal stand enabling the
viewer to see it from all sides. As Susan Purser Hope describes, “Living in North Norfolk with its huge skies, rolling countryside and the overwhelming presence of the sea has greatly influenced our interpretation of a Monstrance and its relationship to Nature. We have even used seaweed from Cromer beach to slump glass over as a representation of both water and air - vital elements for life on our blue planet home of Earth.” Each element of the artwork from the outer skirt through to the transparent fish rotating in the central space is filled with symbolism. From the very start of Christianity, the Church has always been in the vanguard of contemporary art and both artists feel their work is now part of that tradition and heritage. Now that the exhibition at the Cathedral in Norwich has finished, Annie and Susan aim to continue the discussion about the position of symbolism within the modern church. Consequently, they intend to position

“A Modern Monstrance” in other churches to act as a focal point for dialogue. Both Susan Purser Hope and Annie Lloyd have been designing and creating works of art for individuals, community projects, hospices, health centres, hospitals, spiritual communities and schools for a number of years. This, however, is the first time they have collaborated on a piece of work and the first specifically crafted for the Church. The artists are putting out a call to any Church to contact them if their congregation would like to display “A Modern Monstrance” so that the discussion can continue.
Sheringham History Group
Our July talk was given by Doug Hinchon on the History of The Sheringham Hotel. Interesting postcards were shown illustrating the location of the buildings. Although most photos were taken from Weybourne Road the Hotel was aligned with Holt Road going uphill. A 1951 Sale Particulars held by The Norfolk Record Office indicated the owners held property in front of the Hotel to prevent spoiling the view of the sea. Through research including old newspaper clippings, Mr. Hinchon found various owners shaped the history of the Sheringham Hotel. Built in 1888, it survived until most of it was knocked down in the 1950's, leaving the current Sheringham Court. There was quite an interest in the Hotel after the talk including an older gentleman with an iPad showing himself and family living at the Hotel during the Second World War. It was also revealed part of the stables is now Magnolia Cottage-a B&B on Holt Road. There were also visitors from Sheringham Court which still houses a grand staircase. It is difficult to put so much history into one talk. So many topics can be expanded. After a break in August, The Sheringham History Group meets on Saturday 7 September for a group visit to King's Lynn. For details contact Hugh Bradbury by 1 August on 01263 823446 or janeandhugh@gmail.com Also, please note the October talk at the Mo will be at 7.30pm on 2 October. The topic will be a presentation by a staff member from the Norfolk Record Office on house and family history.

Prepare to set sail with the SS Farndale as yet another of Sheringham Little Theatre’s summer repertory productions is launched.
We Found Love and an Exquisite Set of Porcelain Figurines Aboard the SS Farndale Avenue opens on Saturday, 27 July and runs until Friday, 2 August, before making a second voyage from Monday, 26 August to Saturday, 31 August.
The comedy by David McGillivray and Walter Zerlin Jnr, which stars Rupert Mason, Madeleine Brolly, Sarah Langton, Loraine Metcalf and Harry Williams, sees the cast take on the various roles of the Farndale Avenue Housing Estate Townswomen’s Guild Dramatic Society.
The romp focuses on the amateur society as they attempt to stage a production to entertain their village. Their choice is a 1930s’ style
musical comedy set on a luxury cruise liner but exuding all the glamour, charm and sophistication the era demands proves quite a challenge.
Debbie Thompson, director of the Sheringham Little Theatre, said: “This is a very ambitious play for us to do in summer rep as it is a big production. It has particular challenges in that it requires a lot of props and scenery. It also has an underwater scene and a shipwreck, as well as lots of singing and dancing.
“It is a very full production and it feels a bit like trying to stage a pantomime in weekly rep!
Loraine, who plays Thelma in the play, said she is relishing the chance to throw herself into the performance.
“It will be a challenge but I think this play is perfect for the rep at Sheringham. It is an exciting production, with lots going on and plenty of laughs. It is a great choice for this

LADY PRESIDENT FOR LOCAL ROTARY CLUB
Trisha Williams is the new President of Cromer and Sheringham Rotary Club. She took over the reins on 3 July from Peter Stibbons and is only the third lady President in the Club’s 75 year history. Husband, John, a Rotarian for 43 years, was elected senior Vice-President with Alan Howe becoming junior Vice-President.
Trisha, a native of east London, moved to North Norfolk with husband John in 2000 after spending over 50 years in Essex. In Norfolk, she initially joined North Walsham Rotary Club before transferring to Cromer and Sheringham three years ago. With John’s earlier involvement in Round Table and Rotary, Trisha quickly became enmeshed with Ladies’ Circle and then Inner Wheel. As a member of Chingford Inner Wheel she served as Club Secretary, President and, subsequently, London District Secretary. She continued her membership of Inner Wheel after moving to Great Bardfield, also in Essex.
Here, she took up amateur dramatics becoming the Group’s chairman, a position she held until moving to Norfolk.
She and John have been married for nearly 53 years and have a son, Mark, two grandchildren, and a great grandchild.

And, as a growth operation and the mother of service clubs in North Norfolk, in this our 75th year, are looking to increase our numbers still further”.

SHERINGHAM & DISTRICT FLOWER CLUB
We kicked off our summer season in June when members were entertained by Judy Barham from Norwich when she gave her very enjoyable and colourful demonstration entitled ‘A Painter’s Palette’.
July is our ‘month off’ as far as our regular meeting goes, but our ladies are putting on a Strawberry and Cream Tea on Saturday, 27 July at Upper Sheringham Village Hall from 2.30pm until 4.30pm. Everyone is welcome, so please come along and join us and bring your friends for a good old mardle. Admission £4, to include tea and coffee, we’ll have a raffle and there will be flower arrangements for sale too.
Our next regular meeting at St Andrew’s Church, Sheringham, is on 1 August when our demonstrator will be Penny Stone with her theme ‘Flowers in Your Hair’. As usual we start at 7pm for refreshments, and visitors are always welcome (£5 fee).
Many of our members are not flower arrangers, they simply have a love of flowers, so if you would like to come along we would be very pleased to see you. If you would like more information please call Shirley on 01263 825059.

North Norfolk beach huts and chalets – get 25% off weekly hire
Following a very successful promotion in the spring, North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) is to once again reduce the prices of its seaside beach huts and chalets in the autumn.
Having a base by the sea makes spending time at the beach so much easier, whether you use it to store beach essentials, as a place to get changed after a dip, or just want to shelter with a flask and a book from bracing breezes. And NNDC is giving local residents and visitors the opportunity to enjoy a seaside beach hut or chalet at a special 25% discount rate this autumn.
NNDC Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Corporate Assets, Rhodri Oliver, said, “Our fabulous resort beaches are always busy and we rarely have enough beach huts or chalets available to satisfy demand in the main summer holiday period. But earlier and later in the year we usually have a few vacancies. This year we thought it would be better to make them available at a lower price, so that they could all be used and enjoyed by more people. I hope lots of people will be able to take up this very special offer.
“The spring beach hut and chalet offer was a great success, bringing much enjoyment for local people and visitors, along with welcome additional income for the council. I really hope as many people will feel able to take advantage of the autumn discount.”
Subject to availability, the special offer applies to weekly lets of beach huts and chalets in Mundesley, Sheringham and Cromer from 6 September to1 November.
Prices normally start at £45 per week, so with the 25% discount some lucky people will be able to enjoy a hut or chalet for a week on one of north Norfolk’s fabulous beaches for not much more than £30, less than £5 a day, for up to a maximum of three weeks!
For more information tel. 01263 516067 or visit www.northnorfolk.org
Have your say on nuisance marketing calls says Norman Lamb MP
North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb is urging people to respond to an inquiry into nuisance telephone marketing calls.
Parliament’s Culture, Media and Sport Committee is planning to hold an inquiry into Nuisance Telephone Calls and Text Messages. Unwanted marketing messages can be received by telephone or text message. Together with abandoned, including silent, telephone calls, these have led to many complaints to Members of Parliament.
“There are rules to regulate this sort of activity but many people feel those rules are being abused. Even my office number in North Walsham gets automated calls asking if we want to make a claim for a refund of Payment Protection Insurance!” says Mr Lamb.
Ofcom and the Information Commissioner’s Office both have regulatory and enforcement responsibilities. The Telephone Preference Service allows individuals to have their telephone number removed from relevant marketing lists. The Culture, Media and Sport Committee has decided to hold an inquiry into nuisance telephone calls and text messages, focusing on the current regulatory system and its enforcement, the effectiveness of the Telephone Preference Service and practical measures by communications service providers to curtail such communications.
Submissions have to be made in writing (in Word format) by e-mail to cmsev@parliament.uk and should have ‘Nuisance calls’ in the subject line. Submissions should be received by Thursday 15 August 2013.
Guests cycle from Ottendorf in Germany to attend Rotary Handover meeting in North Norfolk
Special guests attended the Handover meeting of the Rotary Club of North Norfolk held at The Dales, Upper Sheringham earlier this month.
Hubert Grunding, the President of the Ottendorf Rotary Club, which is twinned with the North Norfolk club, together with five other representatives of the German club attended the meeting to see the Presidency handed over from Denise Lattaway to the new President John L-R Rainer Pannier, John Gibson, Gibson. Rainer Pannier has been elected as the senior Denise Lattaway Vice President. John, who lives at Roughton has been a long standing member of the club and is well known in the area, having run Gibson’s Butchers in Cromer for many years.
The North Norfolk Club which normally meets on Monday evenings moved the meeting to Thursday to accommodate their German guests who had cycled to Norfolk from Ottendorf on a fund raising trip. Sheringham Independent 372 July 27th 2013

Reply to Grumpy Old Man,
May I just say how offended I was by your Grumpy Old Man column in your latest issue. What a judgemental, ill informed load of rubbish. Particularly about mental health being an excuse - how on earth would he know how it feels to be so unfortunate as to suffer from this? My own daughter, aged four, has learning problems and she is a bright little girl. Mental illness, and I include ADHD are a horrific illness and one which should not be berated. This article belittles these illnesses and the stigma associated that nowadays health professionals are trying to eradicate. Yours sincerely, Name & address supplied
Dear Margaret,
How interesting to read that the Town Council is seeking residents’ opinions on moving their offices to the new Community Centre. My views in response to the issues raised in your magazine are as follows: • The loss of hiring revenue for one small room and the occasional use of a larger meeting room must be set against the saving of running and maintenance costs of the equivalent space at the Town Hall. The Council Chamber stands unused most of the time. If the Council pays a reasonable rent for the use of Community Centre rooms, then the income of money will not suffer • Splitting Council use between the two buildings would be costly and inefficient • Selling the Town Hall would relieve the Council of the responsibility for administration and maintenance of the building. A new owner would be able to sensitively re-develop it to suit the change of use. I don’t think there would be much interest in leasing the first floor in its existing form. Paying off the loan rids the Council of the debt and any future financial concern • The only reason to hang on to the Town Hall is sentiment • Auction the Edwardian furniture and any unwanted items. Keep the worthwhile paintings and memorabilia and, as it is not urgent, put them in store whilst finding somewhere suitable to hang them, either at the Community Centre or another location within the town. • Why delay? Make a clean and positive change and relocate to the new building. Prevarication just wastes time, enthusiasm and money, as well as inviting public criticism.
Printing this letter in the Sheringham Independent will, I hope, stimulate some reaction to the request for a response from the Council. People are extraordinarily slothful, as a general rule, in putting pen to paper. Perhaps if the computer users could rattle their keyboards and give us the benefit of their thoughts on the subject, it would help the Town Council make some decisions. Yours sincerely, Malcolm Bass
Dear Margaret,
Sheringham Library is running a children’s Summer Reading Challenge from 20 July 20. To link in with this the library will help me with my fundraising efforts for Quidenham (East Anglian Children’s Hospices). I need small gift bags, new or used, which I will fill and then sell to raise money for Quidenham. Any donations of bags can be left at the library. Thank you, Maureen Dewhurst

Reply to Grumpy Old Man,
Grumpy old man indeed. More like ignorant old fool. How dare you judge and criticise that which you, clearly, know nothing about. In 2005 I was blessed with a seemingly healthy and happy baby boy, but as he grew it was apparent that he had various learning and behavioural issues. My very bright, very sweet little boy was diagnosed with ADHD as well as other learning issues. He suffers tics, uncontrollable outbursts, severe anxiety and an inability to differentiate between fiction and reality amongst various other symptoms of this neurological disorder. You will never truly know the hardship and difficulty involved with caring for a child like this, and therefore you are not fit to judge it! ADHD is NOT an excuse for laziness or bad behaviour! Nor is it in any way convenient!! I can assure you sir, that my son is not constantly in front of the idiot box or games consoles, preferring family walks, reading, cooking and playing in the garden with his younger brother. In addition to your ignorance in this issue it is clear you are suffering 'in my day' syndrome. Life has changed, science and technology has advanced. Of course you didn't play xbox in your day! I very much doubt that they existed at that time! If you took your blinkers off you'd see a large majority of local children being actively involved in Scouts/Cubs, sports clubs etc. On top of which the children are furiously fighting for a skate park (an outdoor activity!) and a lift on the ban of scooters and skates on the promenade, which appeared without notice, robbing the children of another place to enjoy. What is next? A ban on buckets and spades?! My message to you is simple. Keep your ignorant and obnoxious comments to yourself until you have all the facts. I sincerely hope you never have to live through the hardship of having a child with mental or learning difficulties, but then if you had, I guarantee that you would never have put pen to paper. Name and address supplied P.S. I would suggest that your 'passenger' was either very rude (not differently abled), or you were just boring.
Dear Margaret,
The need for voluntary community transport services to take local people to medical appointments is increasing at ever greater speed, partly because of cutbacks in the NHS own in-patient transport, but also because of reductions in public transport. At NNCT (North Norfolk community Transport) the number of requests for our mediride service has doubled in the last year. We have been able to respond to most of these because we have also been able to recruit more volunteer drivers, but demand is still outpacing supply. We serve a wide area, alongside some other community car schemes, covering most of North and North-east Norfolk. The users of these services are massively grateful for the service provided as often there is no way of getting to their appointments by means that are remotely affordable or even available. The patient pays 42p a mile directly to the volunteer driver to cover the driver’s expenses.
If any reader could find some time to help with this service, no matter how occasionally, both NNCT and our service users would be immensely grateful. To find out more phone us on either 01263 839009 or 01692 500840, or email us admin@btconnect.com These same phone numbers and email address are equally relevant if any reader is in need of this service. Likewise, they can be used if anyone requires our dial-a-bus or group transport services to get out for shopping or to group meetings or outings. Yours faithfully, Mollie Whitworth (NNCT Trustee)
