Sheringham Resident Wins Prestigious Award Special Award for Trainer

Paul, who is a Special Inspector and works in IT and web design, received the ‘Outstanding Contribution of the Year 2013’ for the Specials.

Paul said “I am privileged to have worked with our Specials and hard working Regular colleagues and I’m indebted to the Constabulary for awarding me this accolade”.

“Around 300 Specials give on average 8,500 hours of voluntary service per month. They provide a vital support service that needs a training agenda of the highest quality so we don’t disappoint the public we serve.”

He added “our Specials work closely with police officers on the streets every day, as well as supporting major events, major investigations and

community involvement projects.

“Being a Special is a unique role as most volunteers also have demanding day jobs and we recognise that these skills are transposed across to the Constabulary and likewise vital skills learnt from the Constabulary are transferred back to their workplace. Many Specials move on in their careers as a result of their involvement.”

Volunteers who can commit the minimum average 24 hours a month are always needed. To volunteer as a Special Constabulary Officer visit the Constabulary website for further details.

Special Inspector Paul Brittain (Training) and Special Inspector Angela Gant (North Norfolk)

Eco Friend

Sheringham resident Paul Brittain has been praised by the force for his efforts in managing the training of Specials throughout the county.

SHERINGHAM OTTERNDORF TWINNING ASSOCIATION

Twin Town Visit

The Association is preparing for its bi-annual visit to Otterndorf, our twin town in the Lower Saxony region of Germany. Several exchanges have taken place over the 27 years of the twinning partnership and many long term friendships have been made. These have included the High School, St Peter's Church, the Lobster Potties, Rotary Club and the Shantymen.

One of the aims of the Association is to encourage similar interest groups to exchange. If you belong to a group that would be interested in taking part we would love to hear from you.

The Village Inn West Runton

New Tapas evening every Friday

Otterndorf is a delightful small town full of character situated at the mouth of the River Medem and 65 miles north-west of Hamburg. It is a similar size to our town and dates back to 1261. In 1400, it was granted city rights and in 2000 a large Sheringham group joined their 600th anniversary celebrations taking part in a grand parade which was organised like a military operation.

The visit this year is planned by coach departing on 23 May for an overnight sea crossing followed by a 5 night stay in the town. Home hosting or hotel / self catering accommodation and a daily programme of events is being arranged by a very enthusiastic committee and we are assured of a very warm welcome.

For further information please contact, Evelyn Meakin (Chairman) on 01263 823818.

Sheringham Becoming a Fairtrade Town

We have had two events recently to publicise Sheringham becoming a Fairtrade Town - one at the Primary School's Christmas Fair on 29 November and also at the Sheringham Christmas Lights Switch On on 6 December.

We had similar stalls to attract children and adults to come and chat about Fairtrade. There were Fairtrade tombolas with a prize every time, snacks and drinks for sale (the hot chocolate was very welcome on 6 December!) and booklets and stickers about Fairtrade.

Come and experience a bit of Spain with us. Prices per dish from as little as ÂŁ2.00 See website or pop in for details.

Sheringham Society Coffee Mornings A very happy new year to all our members and friends.

Our November coffee morning included a fascinating talk on bobbin lace making by Carol Adkinson. It all looked incredibly complex and one or two members tried their hand at using the bobbins. The examples of Carol's lace were really exquisite but it takes so long to made even a small piece that I am afraid that in this era of instant everything, most people would not have the patience to learn the craft.

There was no coffee morning in December but 40 members enjoyed a really excellent Christmas lunch at the Beaumaris Hotel. I think that everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves and we have already booked the hotel for our Christmas lunch next year.

Our speaker this month, on Thursday 30 January, will be the well-known local author Neil Storey. His talk is entitled "Ghosts of Norfolk" so come prepared to have your blood chilled.

Narnia at All Saints

Author and theologian C S Lewis died 50 years ago in November 1963. His most famous and well-loved children's story The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe was first published in 1950 and is a tale of four ordinary children and their extraordinary adventures in the magical land of Narnia.

It starts when Lucy discovers she can go through the back of a wardrobe in the spare room Aslan brings Spring to Narnia. into a snowy forest where she Winter is destroyed finds a lamp-post. The evil White Witch's curse ensures that it is always winter but never Christmas - that is until Aslan, a noble and mystical lion, returns to the forest.

This is the story that inspired the Christmas decorations in All Saints' church Beeston Regis. Those involved were Gwen Braybrook, Paddy Corden, Pauline Dolden, Salli Haes, Dallas Marsden, John Meikle, Bob and Judy Wilkinson. "Always winter and never Christmas : think of that!" Judy Wilkinson

Resolve to be a lifesaver in 2014

Readers are being asked to make 2014 the year that they start saving lives by giving blood.

With the festive season at an end, NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) is hoping people in Anglia will pledge to become regular blood donors for their New Year’s resolution.

The New Year period is often a particularly challenging time for blood stocks due to the wintry weather and dark nights keeping people indoors. And as hospitals need 7,000 units of blood each day to treat patients with chronic conditions like cancer and anaemia, along with people needing treatment for often life-threatening illnesses and injuries, NHSBT is encouraging new or returning donors to book an appointment in the first weeks of 2014.

Derek Carr NHSBT’s lead donor relations manager for the Anglia area, said “People often set themselves very difficult and drastic challenges Sheringham Independent 383 January 18th 2014

for their New Year’s resolutions which they struggle to complete.

“However, we are asking people to do something very simple which should only take around an hour of their time, a few times a year. Making and keeping a New Year’s resolution to give blood will give you the satisfaction of knowing you are saving lives.

“We can also guarantee you a warm welcome, a hot cup of tea and a biscuit to stave off the cold January weather.”

Anyone aged between 17-65, weighing more than 50 kg (7 stone 12lbs) and in general good health could potentially start saving lives by becoming a blood donor.

There is no upper age limit for donors who have donated in the last two years.

For more information or to book an appointment, call 0300 123 23 23 or visit www.blood.co.uk

Should I have a Survey done? Written by Richard Hewitt – Partner at Hayes + Storr

You have found that perfect property to buy, and your offer has been accepted. You have been round the house a few times and everything looks lovely and the coffee smelt wonderful!

So, do you need to spend all that money on a survey? Well, it depends. If you are borrowing money from a bank or building society, a valuation survey will be required, and your mortgage offer letter should explain the cost.

If it is only your money you are using to buy the property you do not have to have a survey done; it is your important decision. Some reasons to consider are set out later, but first, what are the different types of surveys?

There are four main types and they increase in cost from £150 or so, upto and beyond £1,000.

MORTGAGE VALuATIOn

and maintenance, a list of issues that require investigation so as to avoid future problems and defects and identification of any legal issues that require addressing and information on the location and local environment. These are often used if you are purchasing a standard older or modern property that appears in reasonable condition.

A DETAILED BuILDInG SuRVEy

Also known as a ‘structural survey’. This report includes a thorough inspection and a detailed report, a description of visible defects and potential issues, the repair options available and the implications of taking no remedial action. These are often used if you are purchasing a larger, or older/run down, altered or unusual property or if you are intending to carry out major works to the property

Shall I have a survey?

This is just the lender checking that the value of the property is sufficient to cover its loan to you. It does not offer you, as a buyer, any protection.

A HOME COnDITIOn REPORT

The report will provide you with clear “traffic light” ratings indicating the condition of different parts of the building, services, garage and outbuildings drawing attention to obvious defects that require attention. This survey will not go into a great amount of detail nor will it give you a valuation of the property. These are often used if you are purchasing a modern property in apparent good condition.

A HOME BuyER REPORT

The report includes all of the features in the Home Condition Report as well as a more extensive inspection, a valuation of the property by the surveyor, an insurance reinstatement figure for the property, a list of defects or potential defects that could affect the value of the property, advice on repairs

• The purchase of a house is, for most of us, the single biggest financial commitment we will ever make.

• Failure to have a survey may leave you with having to spend thousands that you had not budgeted for, and to problems selling on in due course .

The Elephant Man....a heavy responsibility Having the responsibility for historically accurate costumes for a well known play is quite a responsibility, but Nona Gray, who lives in Cromer is taking the task in her stride. Nona has researched the Bernard Pomerance play The Elephant Man, which is set in the 1880’s, and provided the correct costumes for the period. The cast, all of whom are local, will enjoy wearing the clothes of the time, which, for the ladies, will mean bustles! The costumes will certainly enhance John Merrick’s amazing story. This well-known and deeply moving play tells the true story of John Merrick, whose severe deformity causes him to be abandoned in a workhouse at the

age of three. As an adult he is paraded as a ‘freak’ in a carnival until a doctor rescues him and provides him with a home at his hospital. Underneath his deformity Merrick is intelligent and sensitive. Introduced to high Victorian society he finds himself confused by hypocritical Victorian values and attitudes. This play raises uncomfortable questions about society’s morality, the nature of charity and the relative importance of spirituality versus science.

Sheringham Community Awards 2013

Sheringham Town Council launched the awards scheme last year to recognise the achievement and effort of individuals or groups for their work in enriching the quality of life for the visitors and residents of Sheringham.

A Community award is our way of publicly honouring a group or individual who might otherwise never be recognised for the work they have done in making Sheringham a better place to live or visit.

People of all ages are eligible for the scheme, however they should not gain or profit from their voluntary work. The second Annual Awards will be presented by the Mayor of Sheringham, at the Annual Town Meeting at 7.30pm on Tuesday 22nd April 2014 at Sheringham Community Centre. The Annual Town Meeting is a public meeting open to everyone.

Nomination forms for the 2013 Awards can be obtained from the Town Hall and must be returned by 13th February 2014.

ROTARY SLEIGH RAISES NEARLY £1,200

The Christmas Sleigh collection organised annually by Cromer and Sheringham Rotary club raised £1,173. This year’s collection was in aid of the Cromer and Sheringham Lifeboat Stations. The sleigh spent a Friday and Saturday outside Morrisons in Cromer and the following Monday and Tuesday evenings toured the streets of Cromer. Rotarian Donald Mayes, who organised the event, said ‘We would like to thank everyone who gave so generously. We are delighted with the outcome – particularly as the money will go to two very worth local causes’. For further information contact Donald Mayes on 01263 76139

The Singing Beauty Treatment!

It’s a couple of weeks since those New Year resolutions …. Did more than the goose get a little bit fat? Did you, like me, make a New Year resolution to be healthier, be fitter? And are you still keeping it? Well, if going to the gym or striding round North Norfolk in the dark evenings for that after work, work out is not for you, how about singing?

Did you know that exercising those vocal chords is actually an aerobic exercise that benefits the heart and circulation, decreases muscle tension and, because it exercises our lungs, tones up the body? And… singing has been found to improve sleep, tone facial muscles and improve posture…. “What?” I hear you say, “Singing could make me more beautiful!”

Well, yes! And there’s more. The latest research shows singing in a choir causes a calming effect that is as beneficial to your health as yoga. It can help reduce anger, depression and anxiety and has been shown to improve balance issues caused by illness. Then there are the social and

emotional benefits. Singing enhances mood, increases positive feelings and is without doubt spiritually uplifting. It certainly brings people together and encourages a sense of community and if you sing with Cantamus Community Choir, I can promise you it is most assuredly a forum for fun & laughter. And we all know laughter is the best medicine!

together as well as alone because of the increased sense of community, belonging and shared endeavour."

Cantamus Community Choir is a non-auditioned, friendly community choir and always welcome new members. You may have heard us sing the “Hallelujah” chorus or the magnificent coronation anthem, “Zadok the Priest”. Some of our members don’t read music and some haven’t sung since school, whilst others are accomplished singers with a wealth of experience. So if you want the benefits (and beauty treatment) of singing, do come to a rehearsal - Thursdays at 7.30pm in Southrepps Church, NR11 8NR. More information from DavidBallard@hotmail.co.uk 07785 782 498. Our members come from North Walsham, Thorpe Market, Sheringham, Happisburgh, and towns and villages in between so if transport is a problem, a lift may be possible.

Still not convinced? Well perhaps the more formal, scientific explanation will persuade you. I quote Professor Graham Welch, Chair of Music Education, University of London, who has studied the medical aspects of singing for 30 years “Singing has physical benefits because it is an aerobic activity that increases oxygenation in the blood stream and exercises major muscle groups in the upper body, even when sitting. Singing has psychological benefits because of its normally positive effect in reducing stress levels through the action of the endocrine system which is linked to our sense of emotional well-being. Psychological benefits are also evident when people sing

We look forward to growing healthier and more beautiful, singing with you…

North Norfolk loo blocks flushed with success… again!

Fresh from their success in the 2012 awards, North Norfolk District Council’s (NNDC) loo blocks in Happisburgh and Sheringham (East Prom) have again both achieved Gold Awards in the 2013 Loo of the Year Awards.

The two toilet blocks, both built for NNDC in 2011/12 by Thrower & Rutland of Felthorpe and designed by Stead Mutton & Griggs of Sheringham, were among 1432 entries from across the UK including Male, Female, Accessible, Changing Places and Family (baby change) loos, which required Loo of the Year inspectors to visit and judge over 5,000 individual toilets over the summer. The Happisburgh toilet block is now managed by Happisburgh Parish Council.

The 2013 awards, sponsored by Clos-o-Mat, The Toilet and Washroom Cleaning Company, Ophardt and are supported by the four national tourism bodies in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, covered 100 judging criteria including signage, décor and maintenance, fixtures and fittings, cleanliness and overall management and customer care. The Loo of the Year Awards presentation event was held on Friday 6 December at the St Johns Hotel in Solihull.

NNDC Cabinet Member for Corporate Assets, Rhodri Oliver, said, “We’re delighted that these two excellent and relatively new toilet blocks haven’t gone down the pan, but are still amongst the best in the country. And I am particularly pleased that both survived last week’s tidal surge that caused so much damage down the North Norfolk coast. They are very important not just for people who live nearby but also in supporting the local tourism industries and I would like to congratulate everyone involved in their continuing success.”

2014 is, of course, the centenary year of the outbreak of the First World War. This was the War to end all Wars, which it was not, the War that would be over by Christmas, which it was not, and the War that resulted in more than 16 million deaths and 20 million wounded, which it was. Holt and District Probus Club were given a fascinating talk on World War 1 and Trench Art by Mr Ray Morgan. Ray started by showing the famous poster with the picture of Lord Kitchener and the call ’Your Country Needs You’. This was part of a campaign to bring in recruits to supplement an army struggling from huge loss of life.

Norfolk County Council Coasthopper Proposed Cuts

I am being asked by several constituents questions regarding the proposed cuts to the Coasthopper Service at County Hall. Although like most of you I do not want to see any cuts in any of our County Services, inevitably cuts will have to come with the present situation we find ourselves in. But be assured, for my part it will be done fairly and with much consideration to our county ‘Norfolk Putting People First’ program which I hope many will have responded tom and the local comment I have received.

Ideally, of course, the supported bus budget which this service comes under would not be touched. However Norfolk County Council, with a funding shortfall of at least £189 million over the next three years, must act to fill this gap. The scale of savings to the supported bus budget (£75,000) is small when compared with

cuts to the bus budget of 2010 when savings of £1.5m was made. The future budget figures show a marginal increase in 2016/17 due to inflation and contractual cost increases, not because of an increase in real spending power. The council’s proportion of direct investment in the Coasthopper has remained consistent, even in the most recent challenging financial times when budgets have reduced. However, this is not sustainable in the next few years when pressures will be even greater. There is more scope to absorb the reduction in funding in the Coasthopper than any other service. Other bus services, all offering vital lifelines in rural communities and running less frequently would cease operation. Coasthopper is commercially robust and there was scope to reduce council investment to it, effectively to stand on its own feet. This is borne out by the fact that the operator has confirmed there is sufficient profit to run the service without subsidy during

the summer. As I understand it, the summer service will be unchanged. There are negotiations ongoing about the level of investment required by the current bus operator Norfolk Green for a winter service. If this is unaffordable and it is believed that a better outcome can be had from a wider procurement, there will be further consultation with local people and businesses to inform that tender. It would be premature to speculate on the outcome of any negotiations. I understand the process about next steps was made very clear at all three coastal meetings.

THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER MAKE YOUR GARDEN GROW all possible worlds’, even as he travels around the world being conned and abused by almost everyone he meets. The wonderful score ends with the song ‘Make our Garden Grow’ which is so stirring that it should inspire us all to get outside into our gardens as soon as the weather allows.

All the gardening organisations and seed companies are sending out advice and details of their new introductions at this time of year and here are some of the suggestions I have seen:

SuTTOnS SEEDS

Over the Christmas holiday we were lucky enough to see a wonderful production of Leonard Bernstein’s musical version of Voltaire’s ‘Candide’ at the Menier Chocolate Factory, which is close to Southwark Cathedral in London.

This seed company has introduced new flowers and vegetable seed including Tomato ‘Firecracker’, a compact, naturally trailing variety for pots, basket or patio which throughout the season promises 60-80 fruits, each weighing around 30-35 g. They are also promoting a new plant Didiscus ‘Madonna’ which has lace-like flowers. It is a border plant producing domed clusters of tiny flowers. It can also be grown in a cold greenhouse or conservatory.

unWInS SEEDS

Unwins are selling the Rose of the Year 2014 which is called Lady Marmalade. They are also publicising the BBC2 TV programme’ The Great British Garden Revival’ which provides a great 5 Old Stable Yard, Holt winter tonic and Successfully managing and letting reminder of warmer times to come. MARSHALLS SEEDS

With the dramatically increasing price of potatoes in the shops Marshalls are encouraging people to grow their own and reminding us all to get in our orders for seed potatoes while all the different varieties are available. To go with the new potatoes Marshalls are selling Brundell’s Mint, which comes from a specialist grower outside Norwich.

They also have an Extra Early Brassica Collection which promises early delivery of the plants which allows harvesting as early as May/June.

ROyAL HORTICuLTuRAL SOCIETy

The RHS suggests that in January we should do the following jobs

Help the Hungry - Putting out food over the winter is a great way to support the wildlife in your garden especially the birds.

Apple and Pear tree pruning – To ensure good crops of fruit it is best to carry out pruning of apples and pears in the winter. The overall aim is to remove dead, old and less productive wood and to reduce congestion.

Plants for winter cheer – Even in the depths of winter it is possible to have plants in bloom in the garden some of which are highly scented. A visit to the winter planting at the Cambridge Botanic Gardens is highly recommended.

HORTICuLTuRAL SOCIETIES

Why not start the New Year by joining your local Garden Club or Horticultural Society and taking part in all the activities they arrange? I must finally return to Voltaire, ‘that is very well said’, replied Candide, ’but we must cultivate our garden’. The photograph is of the famous Borough Market in Southwark at Christmas that shows what we can produce if we cultivate our gardens and allotments. Bob Wilkinson

Charlie’s home cured Gravadlax.... with home-made Norfolk horseradish Since I’ve been in Cromer I’ve one of the many highlights has been becoming involved with the RNLI, training to be part of the crew. The do such a great job all year round and they are a great bunch of boys. It’s not until you get the RNLI bug completely under your skin that you realise the commitment, bravery and selflessness that they all have, and it’s been a privilege to spend time with them. The boss is, however, slightly concerned that the alarm will go at seven thirty on a Saturday night when my hands are full of steak, but I’ve assured him that Icarus’ steak always takes priority!

This recipe has been a firm favourite on our a la carte menu for a while now, and if you’ve ever wanted to know how to cure salmon – now’s your chance.

I look forward to seeing you all at the Grove this winter – we are open for dinner Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, plus of course the best Sunday Lunch in Norfolk! Best wishes, Charlie

you will need to purchase half side of salmon, scaled and pin boned (any fishmonger will do this for you).

► Place the salmon on a piece of parchment big enough to be able to fold over the fish.

► In a food processor, blend 5-7 good size sprigs of dill

► Add crushed black peppercorns, a handful of pink peppercorns, half a squeezed lemon, a good squeeze of Norfolk honey (if possible from hives that have been located near rape seed, as the honey tastes scrummy, and just a bit more fragrant).

► Blend all the above ingredients until a fine paste, like a pesto-type consistency, and put aside.

► Sprinkle a good handful of Maldon Sea onto the fish with the dill paste and spoon spread across the top of the salmon until even, as you need to have a consistent flavour through the whole of the flesh.

► Fold over the parchment, and then wrap gently with cling film length and width-wise until fully sealed.

► Leave in fridge for 10 days… (no longer!)

► When cured take your salmon from the fridge, unwrap and slice very finely using a carving (or if you have a long fish) knife.

► For the simple Horseradish crème fraîche,

Lessons

grate one whole horseradish (can be purchased from a good farm shop although you might need to order in advance), being careful not to grate too far into the core as it becomes very hard and stringy.

► Add to the horseradish one teaspoon of Dijon mustard, a pinch of salt and pepper and a touch of castor sugar.

► Mix all together with a good couple of large table spoons of crème fraîche and an equal amount of sour cream.

► Finally squeeze your other half of lemon (or probably a fresh lemon, given that the last half was used ten days before!) into the mix.

Simply serve your salmon with your fresh Horseradish sauce and toasted sourdough bread.

Dear Margaret,

Please may I ask your readers to save their postage stamps for me for various charities that I support. They can be sent to me at 111 Mill Road, Cromer, NR27 0AD Thanks Yours sincerely Jayne Manning (Miss)

Dear Margaret,

This is a response to Debbie Watson’s letter from issue 382.It is valid comment that the public should take responsibility for their actions, aspire to pay their own way in life and not rely on the country’s tax payers. There are far too many stories in the press about individuals that have many children in order to gain a house & benefits that pay for luxuries that hard working people may struggle to afford. However I would like to remind Sheringham Independent readers that there are genuine people that are in need of claiming benefits or a handout from the food bank. The beauty of life is that it is unpredictable. No matter how much you plan to support yourself, something may happen that means this is no longer a possibility - examples such as being made redundant, a diagnosis of illness or disability, a death of an immediate family member are all things that can happen to any one of us at any time. I am blessed to be in a position where my partner and I are able to support our two young children and have never needed to claim benefits. I believe the people at the food bank are those that still have a conscience and believe that it is right to help others in their most desperate hour. I do think it is a shame if there wasn't a food bank service in the days when Ms Watson was growing up. It sounds as if her hard working family would have been considered as one of those in genuine need of support. Kind regards, Chloe Green, Sheringham

Dear Margaret,

Whilst reading through the last issue of the Sheringham Independent I was totally amazed and appalled at the letter from Debbie Watson regarding the foodbank collection at Tesco. To have such little compassion for those around us who are in desperate need of the basics that initiatives such as the foodbank provide, is incomprehensible and utterly selfish. It may well have been the case that when she was growing up in a flat which was far too small for her large family to live in and where money was so tight that the lights would often go out, that foodbanks and other help organisations simply weren’t around to help. However I’m fairly sure that if her parents were asked if they’d like some form of help, be it in the form of food packages, financial aid or simply to be guided in the right direction to get the help they needed, that they would have accepted it. The help might not have been there at the time but wouldn’t it have been nice if it was? I know people who unfortunately have had to use the foodbank, and there are many reasons why they have had to. It could be a case of a job being lost or an illness preventing someone from working. Benefits don’t always start paying immediately or anywhere near enough and trying to get child and working tax credits can be a bit of a minefield in itself. To callously turn her nose up at those in need, especially at this time of the year is cold hearted and quite frankly immoral. Debbie should take a close look at herself and her attitude and be ashamed as much about her letter is wrong and simply a rant for no better reason than being disturbed whilst entering Tesco. Personally my family doesn’t have much money, but we work hard for what we do have. Thankfully we have a fantastic mix of family and friends around us who help us as we help them and so far we haven’t needed to use the foodbank, although we have come close on a number of occasions. When we visited Tesco we were also greeted by the kind foodbank volunteers and were offered a leaflet listing things they needed. To us that was a reminder that there are plenty of others who are worse off than

20

ourselves and as a challenge, reducing what we spent on ourselves so that we could get as many items on the list as possible. I’m sure the 50 people at Walcott who lost everything in the recent flooding and who were helped by the foodbank would also disagree with Debbie’s letter. Yours sincerely, Name & address supplied

Dear Margaret,

Thank you so much for printing my letter in your paper regarding the hit and run driver who killed our beloved cat Mr. Mog in Curtis Lane recently. An eye witness has reported that the vehicle concerned was possibly a black four by four type, and that it was travelling at breakneck speed up Curtis Lane from Beeston Common. The eye witness was the one who stopped their car and picked up Mog's body and laid it on the grass verge outside our house. I would like to thank that person from the bottom of my heart. It could not have been a pleasant task. I am told by the Highways inspector who came to look at the site where this happened, that the government are trying to get a bill passed through parliament to reduce the speed limit from 30 mph to 20 mph. However he did comment that the type of driver who drives this recklessly was unlikely to observe any speed limit. Mr Mog was just a few feet from our front gate when this happened. Next time it could be a child. Thank you again. Yours sincerely, Christine Parmenter

Dear Margaret,

I refer to Mrs Peta Jellis’ letter (issue 382 Sheringham Independent 14 December). Why on earth does Mrs Jellis have a flat here if she feels our shops are so dire that she has to bring food supplies, etc. from Northamptonshire? We have a splendid selection of shops for all needs. Our food shops sell an array of good quality local produce and you cannot get much better than that. As for a Costa Coffee - heaven forbid! If Mrs Jellis wants an early coffee after her morning swim, why does she not make up a flask? Holt is welcome to her custom. Yours sincerely, Name & address supplied

Dear Margaret,

I read Mrs Peta Jellis' letter in 14 December issue with a mixture of dismay and disbelief. Why did she bother to bring her food from Nottingham, rather than shopping in Sheringham? The town sells wonderful fresh and local produce. The supermarket she is so happy to use has an unhappy history of helping to end the vibrancy of the high street. Let us hope that is not the case this time. As for the coffee shop, we do not need another global franchise to further turn Sheringham into 'Anytown UK'. Please do not follow Mrs Jellis' lead - shop in Sheringham's wonderful shops. Penny Holden, Sheringham

Dear Margaret,

In reply to Mrs Peta Jellis, I am disappointed she cannot find one of the various cafe / coffee houses in Sheringham to her liking. In my opinion the one she seems to allude to is a far superior proposition to Costa Coffee or a Tesco coffee shop. Fully traceable fresh local food cooked to order, and a personal service, from a business that is very "Sheringham" focused, and the owner guarantees that he pays all his taxes. Costa Coffee - no thanks! There is also a big difference in buying food locally, and buying local food. Yours sincerely, Sam Papworth

Dear Margaret,

I just had to reply to the letter from Mrs Peta Jellis – No, no, no to Costa Coffee in Sheringham. Tesco is bad enough, let alone Costa Coffee. There are many adequate places for coffee in our town. Yours sincerely, Mrs Janice Pope

Sheringham Independent 383 January 18th 2014

Dear Margaret,

In reply to the letter sent by Mrs Peta Jellis. Oh dear, I can't think why Mrs Jellis ever decided to buy a flat in Sheringham, by all accounts a place so devoid of shops selling comestibles that she always had to lug her provisions all the way from Northamptonshire...that is before the Mighty Tesco descended upon us to help us out of our difficulty in stocking our kitchen cupboards, fridges and freezers. Has Mrs Jellis failed to notice that we have in Sheringham's streets, 3 greengrocers, 2 wet fish shops, 2 bakeries, a nice Sainsbury's Local, a Coop, Nobby's Emporium, 2 butchers shops, a thriving deli & 2 healthfood shops, I think that's pretty good going for a small town, don't you ? I'm also sorry to read that a good latte can't be found in the town, come on you coffee shops or else we'll have... Heaven Forbid... a Costa Coffee thrust upon us next! Can't do much about the weather for you Mrs Jellis but do bear in mind Sheringham is a town that hugs the North Sea.... we know to our cost what the North Sea can do, and as a result of being on the edge it can be a wee bit draughty at times. But the hundreds of happy visitors we get coming to Sheringham don't seem to mind too much about sitting on hard chairs while drinking tea, coffee or something a little stronger while being buffeted by the sea breezes. So Mrs Jellis let’s all be glad that Sheringham is the town that it is, that its High Street & Station Road is full of independent shops & that it's not just a clone of many other towns that have had the heart ripped out of them by the Giant Multinationals. I love Sheringham. Helen West, Sheringham

Dear Margaret,

I read Mrs Jellis' letter re the new Tesco and lack of a "decent coffee shop" in Sheringham, whilst sitting in the quirky, independent, locallyrun, fab cafe that is the Funky Mackerel, looking out over the sea, safely watching the pounding sea. I could equally have been sitting in Julie’s cafe with its fab cakes, coffee and buzzing atmosphere or Roy's - tucking into his beautifully homecooked breakfast with a big mug of freshly brewed tea. They all serve good food and drink, each with its unique charm (there are several others worthy of a visit). Her comments are flippant, unfair and, in my experience, totally untrue. Who wants to sit in the corporate template canteen (cafes they are not!) which is the lot of the "coffee supermarket"? If she has been bringing her provisions all the way from Northamptonshire because she cannot buy "quality vegetables and other food locally" she has clearly not been looking locally (does she ever walk down the High Street?!). If she did she would already be buying top quality fruit, vegetables, meat and fish from the superbly stocked independent LOCAL shops. A lot of the produce is sourced locally - one greengrocer even sold walnuts from a customer's garden this year! Similar produce bought "locally" from Tesco is from a distribution centre - the nearest of which is in Peterborough (there is no Tesco distribution centre in Norfolk). Hardly local! Tesco is situated locally, it is NOT local. Wake up and smell the latte Mrs Jellis. Regards, Jane Crossen

Dear Margaret,

Ref letter by Peta Jellis issue 382 14 December Perhaps when this lady gets out of the pool, she should remove her heavily tinted misted goggles, have her eyes tested and then she would see what Sheringham has to offer. There are lots of fruiterers, butchers and bakers all selling fresh products along with lots of other independent shops of all types. There are numerous cafes, tea rooms and large and small restaurants for her to choose from. As she decided to live in Sheringham but dislikes it so much, may I suggest she goes straight back to Tescos in Northampton and visits their half empty streets and leaves Sheringham alone. Sheringham may not have a Costas but it is a happy place to shop and drink. Yours sincerely Anthony Dye

Sheringham Independent 383 January 18th 2014

Dear Margaret,

I am writing to express my concern regarding a letter you published in the pre Christmas edition of The Sheringham Independent (14 December). The letter claimed to be written by a Mrs Peta Jellis who, from the contents of her letter, does not appear to be a full time resident of the town, but had arrived to her flat from Northamptonshire. My concern is that the author of the letter is bogus and in fact a person wishing to incite mischief and provoke outrage amongst the local population who read it. Surely someone who does not live in the town would not go out of their way to insult and denigrate the majority of small businesses in Sheringham who provide food and drink? Maybe I am over-reacting but I feel this needs investigating. Please do not misunderstand me, I have shopped in the new Tesco store (lovely architecture) and have a Club Card. However, Mrs Jellis states in her letter that she no longer has to bring provisions with her as she can now obtain ‘quality vegetables and other food locally’. I am not quite sure which high street Mrs Jellis has been walking along but it cannot have been Sheringham. Otherwise she would have taken advantage of the two butchers and the three fruit and vegetable shops offering between them a vast array of produce, many local and organic. Then there are the bakers, fishmongers, delicatessen and healthfood shops (and let’s not forget Sainsburys and the Co-op for everyday milk and sugar). Personally I think the town gives shoppers a great deal of choice and quality produce but then I admit I have never been to the metropolis that is Northamptonshire so perhaps I am not qualified to compare. Coffee and the places that sell it is something I feel more experienced to comment on however, and I am truly sorry to hear Mrs Jellis is disappointed that Tesco’s did not think to include a coffee shop in their development. Again do not misunderstand me as I have both a Costa Coffee and Starbucks loyalty card and am a frequent visitor when I am in Norwich or some other major city. I went to Gran Canaria for a holiday a couple of years ago and spend 10 days asking for cappuccino only to be served instant coffee with squirty cream on top. When I got to the airport for the flight home and there was a Starbucks in the terminal, my husband said it was like a re-enactment of the last scene of the movie Ice Cold in Alex. I like coffee, a lot. In her letter Mrs Jellis bemoans the lack of a decent coffee shop or café in Sheringham and again I ask myself, where is she looking? Sheringham is a working town that caters to locals and holidaymakers alike. It is a place for day trippers and fish and chips, for dog walkers and ice cream. It is not one of the coffee capitals of the world such as Paris, Vienna, Seattle and Northamptonshire (???). There are cafes to suit all types from locals having a coffee and gossip to holidaymakers sheltering from the weather. Yes there may be the faint odour of cooking fat in some but their coffee is as good as their fry-ups. There are some where you would need to get a boost up to sit on their stools (great place to watch the world go by and good coffee) and personally I like a good sturdy wrought iron chair to sit on and plastic tablecloths are just practical. When I read Mrs Jellis’ letter I was sitting in Rallendandos coffee shop, my personal favourite place for coffee in Sheringham. Its owners, Karen and Ivan, were amused by Mrs Jellis’ letter but I don’t think overly concerned. They were far too busy running an independent coffee shop which welcomes locals as friends, offers a wide range of coffees to suit all tastes but who are more than happy to make it just the way you like it, who don’t sell expensive mugs and bags of coffee that I will never use but do offer homemade cakes and biscuits. It’s a coffee shop where, unlike some of the major companies, I don’t have to ask for my coffee to be extra hot as it just comes that way. It’s a shame that Mrs Jellis has to make the long trek to Holt to get, in her opinion, a decent latte - we all are aware of how in these grave economic times those extra miles add up. However I think if she actually took the time to look around Sheringham, she might find somewhere here that would suit her and she would wake up and smell the coffee. Yours sincerely Liz Sargent (coffee lover)

Dear Margaret,

May I, as a proud resident of Sheringham, reply to the odious letter you published recently from one Mrs Peta Jellis? Reading between the lines, this lady is an occasional visitor to our town, and she writes in praise of the newly-opened Tesco store, which (only now, by inference) enables her to buy ‘quality vegetables and other food’ locally. Mrs Jellis appears to have no perception of the facilities our town has to offer, and therefore I have little sympathy with her. I, for one, welcome visitors from all over the country (and from overseas) to enjoy our hospitality, and not only in the summer. I value our community spirit and I do not take kindly to nit-picky criticism from blinkered visitors. This vibrant town offers a wide variety of high quality ‘vegetables and other food’, and has done so for many years. Walk down our three main shopping streets and you will find locally-sourced and top quality meats, fish, seafood and greengroceries in abundance. The town also has small supermarkets at Sainsbury’s and the Co-Op. On the subject of coffee, I believe anyone would be hard pressed to find a greater choice elsewhere. I don’t have enough fingers to count them all, but if Mrs Jellis is unable to find a decent latte in Sheringham, I feel that, with respect, she is not really looking. If Mrs Jellis is a real person, perhaps she should consider spending her vacation time in Holt, rather than here. Yours sincerely, Leslie Popham

Dear Margaret,

I totally disagree with Mrs. Jellis' suggestion that Sheringham would benefit from the opening of a Costa Coffee (14 December issue). For us, and our friends and family who have visited the town regularly for the past 10 years, the attraction of Sheringham is its quaintness and

the fact that the majority of the High Street shops are independently run. There are numerous places to enjoy coffee in the town (The Little Theatre, The Funky Mackerel, Crofters and the Copper Kettle to name but a few). Perhaps some have plastic tablecloths and wrought iron chairs, but so what, they are all run by friendly individuals who provide good coffee (and other drinks) at reasonable prices. In my experience, Costa Coffee establishments offer overpriced drinks and snacks. They are noisy, with uncomfortable seating, and have zero charm. Another point which Mrs. Jellis made was, now that Tesco are in town, she has no need to bring provisions from home, but 'can now get quality vegetables and other food locally'. Another 'perk' of visiting Sheringham is that the town has at least three fresh fruit and vegetable shops, as well as the twice-weekly market, two bakers, two wet fish shops, butchers, etc. etc. I also have a flat in Sheringham and travel regularly from Oxfordshire to spend time there. I do not bring any provisions with me. Why would I when I can buy food when I arrive which is considerably fresher and cheaper than anything I can buy at home in the local supermarkets where sadly we do not have the luxury of little independently run shops - they were forced to close long ago after the likes of Sainsbury's and Waitrose arrived. Mrs Lesley Graves

Dear Margaret,

I would like to congratulate the committee who organised the Christmas Lights. They were really lovely and brightened up Sheringham. I will be sad to see them go. Also please say a big thank you to all the shopkeepers who made a lovely display in their windows. Well done! Yours sincerely, Mrs D A Hadfield

The past year has been as varied as usual but this time, unlike 2012, we had a long run of fine weather from July onwards and very little in the way of cold weather in the last three months of the year. The first six months were generally cold/cool but with an above average content of high pressure especially to the north, rainfall was below average . Of note was the persistence of a north or north-east wind off the cold North Sea . As we enter 2014 expect a continuation of what we have been having in December as the Atlantic still has plenty of energy in this year. Towards the middle of January we start to see overall pressure rising giving rise to more stability in the atmosphere so subsequently there will be more chance of some less volatile weather. To sum up for February and March it looks like

temperatures will average out a little below average and under high pressure conditions there will be some decidedly cold overnight temperatures in March. Only towards the end of March will there be any fine, warm weather and this is likely to be short lived. Ned Nimbus

Coltishall Clinic is very pleased to announce the arrival of a new state-of-the-art q-switched ruby laser from polaris medical. It is a heavy machine weighting at 125lbs and taller than most of us with its articulated laser arm. It is very expensive too but we believe in offering only the best. And when it comes to laser tattoo removal-shortcuts are simply not worth it!

The market has been flooded with cheap poorly tested laser devices in recent years. We have seen more injuries, inadequate treatments and even keloid scars after tattoo removals attempted by non-medical establishments recently.

There are also a number of non-laser tattoo removal options available today and a lot of these are dangerous. It does not make sense to inject strong alkaline solutions into tattoo ink. It might remove some ink but it would certainly remove normal tissues with risk of scarring.

Q switched ruby laser is renowned for its ability to remove green as well as dark inks. It is also used for removing unwanted skin pigment. With our q-switched Nd-Yag laser and the ruby laser, we now have a full range of advanced lasers to offer the very best in Laser tattoo removal.

For Laser Tattoo or pigment removal contact Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic on 0800 0430737 or www.coltishallclinic.co.uk

Keith Skipper’s Crackers at Probus Christmas lunch

The Cromer and Sheringham Probus Club chairman, Dave Vickery, welcomed fellow members and their guests at the Christmas Lunch held at the Links Hotel West Runton on 3 December. Everyone then tucked in to an excellent meal.

himself, his wife Diane and all the other guests.

Our lunch coincided with the day of Keith’s monthly mardle with Matthew Gudgin on BBC Radio Norfolk, so just after 6 o’clock he was called upon to explain on air why he had turned up at the radio station in suit and tie. This gave him the opportunity to thank us again, rather more publicly, and he referred to the forthcoming visits by David Clayton and Greg Powles to our lunches in the New Year.

The loyal toast was proposed by Brian Bullock and then the chairman made a few remarks. Dave Vickery said that, at the half-way point in his year in office, he was thoroughly enjoying it, particularly as the standard of the speakers and the food had been high.

Dave thanked Barry Tomlinson and Gordon Hatchett for their work as treasurer and secretary respectively. He also thanked all the members for their efficiency in letting him know on the occasions when they are unable to attend the monthly lunch meetings.

In conclusion, Dave introduced his guest of honour, Keith Skipper, and proposed a toast

Chairman Dave Vickery with Keith Skipper

to all the guests.

Keith Skipper responded in his usual witty and humorous manner with a mixture of truthful and fictional stories which included some real crackers. He concluded by thanking the members for their hospitality on behalf of

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Although the message on the answer phone says that we are closed over the Christmas period there are still some messages left, which Stephanie does listen to. A call from a gentleman regarding a “stray pregnant cat” on a car park obviously needed a return call to assess the situation. After speaking to the gentleman Stephanie contacted one of our volunteers who kindly agreed to go and pick up the cat so that she was safe should the birth of the kittens be imminent. This was not just a two minute visit down the road but involved a round trip of about 20 miles.

On reaching the car park our volunteer found the cat sitting next to a plate with a cat basket close by. She secured the cat and put her in her car. On going back to the place where she found the cat she was approached by someone who asked if she had just taken the cat. On confirming she had and the reasons why, the person, who lived near the car park, stated it was her cat (apparently the dish and basket are there for another cat). She became very aggressive to our volunteer, stating that the cat was not pregnant, we should have put up posters, checked

with the vets and knocked on all the doors nearby to find out whose cat it was. Can you imagine the response our volunteer would have received if she had done this, particularly as it happened to be Boxing Day? Bearing in mind we were under the Poppy - lovely young cat handed into care impression the cat was as a stray last year pregnant (she did have one of those low undercarriages neutered cats often have), our main aim was to ensure the cat was safe in case she needed veterinary care. Contacting vets to let them know the cat was in our care would have been a priority once they had opened after the holiday but not possible while cover was being offered by another practice, not in the immediate vicinity. Most people would be relieved to learn that their cat’s welfare had been considered to be important but, sadly, not in this instance. From our point of view it was a blessing not to start the New Year with a pregnant cat and to thank our volunteer to coming to the rescue and responding to a request for help.

Microchipping

If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit

your

Dog

www.cats.org.uk/northwalsham

for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

Last year the Government announced it will become law for all dogs to be permanently identified by a ‘micro-chip’ by 2016. These ‘chips’ are the size of a grain of rice and placed into the scruff of the animal’s neck between the shoulder blades. It is a simple, painless procedure which can be carried out without the need for anaesthetic or sedation. There is no age limit for microchipping and it can be carried out on dogs, cats, tortoises and rabbits. Miramar vets is supporting the Government’s decision to make microchipping compulsory by offering the microchips at the reduced price of £15.00 for the whole of February. (usual price is £25) If you would like your pet microchipped please ring us to book an appointmen and bring the coupon with you.

If however you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher).

A Christmas Cracker

Members of Animal Magic Dog Club who attended the dogs’ Christmas party raised a festive £550 in aid of the Cinnamon Trust and Faith rescue centre. Santa, pictured here with Georgie, took time out from his busy day job at Sam’s Pets to deliver presents to all of the dogs attending.

PORK CHOPS

Special Offer Holt & District Probus Club

On 5 December at the Feathers Hotel, the Holt & District Probus Club were given a talk by David Bill, OBE, on the prospects of Holt being reconnected to the main railway network.

He gave an account of his background with three generations having worked on the M&GN railway with his great grandfather who was the first stationmaster at Massingham and his own father who had the sad task of locking up Sheringham for the last time in the mid 1960s. When the Sheringham to Melton Constable line closed, efforts were made by a group of enthusiasts to purchase that line but the cost was prohibitive.

Approval for Neighbourhood Areas in Corpusty and Saxthorpe, and Holt

Following the Government’s introduction of the community right to undertake Neighbourhood Planning through the Localism Act, North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) has approved applications from Corpusty and Saxthorpe Parish Council and Holt Town Council to designate their respective parish areas as ‘Neighbourhood Areas’. The applications were approved by NNDC Cabinet at its December meeting.

However the line from Sheringham to Weybourne was saved and extended to the present day Holt Station (at High Kelling) to become the North Norfolk Railway (aka The Poppy Line). The Melton Constable trust was formed to purchase the old rail tracks to connect the NNR to Melton Constable and via Fakenham to join the Mid Norfolk Railway.

Thus via Wymondham and Norwich to complete the orbital track. The proposed first phase in this scheme is to extend a line from the present High Kelling terminus across the Old Cromer road and along the side of the Holt Bypass to a new terminus close to where the original Holt station was sited. Progress has been made with the purchase of a piece of land which will permit a crossing of the Old Cromer Road near to the NNR terminus at High Kelling. Mr Bill acknowledged the difficulty in this, whether by bridge or level crossing. He said the possibility of running a mainline service from Holt to Norwich in the morning and return in the evening, without disturbing NNR operations, might appeal to Holt and High Kelling residents. After a lively questions session a vote of thanks was given by Alan Mason.

Neighbourhood Areas are formally designated areas within which Neighbourhood Development Plans and Neighbourhood Development Orders can be prepared.

The designation of a Neighbourhood Area enables the Town or Parish Council to prepare a Neighbourhood Plan that can contain local policies or proposals relating to the development of land, and, once adopted, they would become part of the wider statutory Development Plan for North Norfolk.

For more information on neighbourhood Planning, including a map showing the approved Corpusty and Saxthorpe neighbourhood Area and Holt neighbourhood Area, please visit www.northnorfolk.org/neighbourhoodplans
