Society Celebrates Centenary! Covering Sheringham, the Runtons, Holt and surrounding villages in association with the Cromer Times and North Walsham Times

The Cromer and Sheringham Operatic and Dramatic Society are celebrating their 100th year in 2014. They have many events planned, the first of which was this photo on Cromer beach with over 100 members of the society making the number 100 on Cromer beach.

The age range of CSODS members in the photo was from someone in their nineties to a seven year old junior member who is just about to start rehearsals for the musical Oliver!

Some of those present had been in the society over forty years while for others this is the first year of membership. This award winning society have raised thousands of pounds for various charities, both local and national over the years, and this year are raising money for ‘About with Friends’ a Cromer based charity that helps adults with learning difficulties live the lives they choose, the Sheringham Salvation Army’s Christmas care project, ‘Toy and Tins’ which is being run in conjunction with Norfolk Radio, and ‘Changing Faces’ a national charity that helps those with facial disfigurements.

Society Celebrates Centenary!

Continued from front cover... Details of the society and the shows and celebrations they have planned in this very special year can be found on their new website. www.CSODS.com

The Cromer and Sheringham Operatic and Dramatic Society would like to thank everyone who has supported the society by coming to the shows, and also we would like to thank the local press for allowing us to share our productions and projects with the wonderful people of North Norfolk. We look forward to sharing more fantastic shows with you as we embark our second century!

Sheringham Community Awards 2013

Sheringham Town Council launched the awards scheme last year to recognise the achievement and effort of individuals or groups for their work in enriching the quality of life for the visitors and residents of Sheringham.

A Community award is our way of publicly honouring a group or individual who might otherwise never be recognised for the work they have done in making Sheringham a better place to live or visit.

People of all ages are eligible for the scheme, however they should not gain or profit from their voluntary work. The second Annual Awards will be presented by the Mayor of Sheringham, at the Annual Town Meeting at 7.30pm on Tuesday 22nd April 2014 at Sheringham Community Centre. The Annual Town Meeting is a public meeting open to everyone.

Nomination forms for the 2013 Awards can be obtained from the Town Hall and must be returned by 13th February 2014.

Sheringham Lifeboat Service

At 19.50 hrs on 7 January Sheringham Lifeboats was tasked by HM Coastguard to proceed on a course Latitude 53 degrees to Blakeney point where an aircraft was reported to have ditched. Wells and Cromer Lifeboats were also dispatched to the scene. On reaching their destination at approx 20.10 hrs along with the other Lifeboats Sheringham lifeboat was stood down.

National media subsequently reported that“the aircraft came down in the Cley area in north Norfolk. The helicopter was an HH-60G Pave Hawk, based at RAF Lakenheath in Suffolk, a spokesman for the USAF confirmed. The aircraft usually carries a four-man crew on board, he said. It was initially thought the aircraft had ditched in the North Sea. A spokesman for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution said: "We were asked for three lifeboats to respond. "Crews from Wells, Sheringham and Cromer were launched at the request of the coastguard but were stood down when it was confirmed that the aircraft had come down over land." SHERINGHAM HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING 2014

schedule. She asked for members’ suggestions for classes which they felt would be popular and well supported.

On Thursday, 16 January the Sheringham Horticultural Society held their Annual General Meeting attended by fifty members.

Members were disappointed to learn that Greta and John Platten would be standing down from the committee and that both the Chairman and Treasurer had given twelve months notice of their own intention to step down from their posts. However there was the good news that three members had offered to join the committee.

After the formal business, the Chairman, Paddy Corden, reviewed the activities of 2013 and thanked all those who had helped the Society operate so successfully during the year especially those who had given extra support The first talk in 2014 will be ‘Working during his period of illness. He reported with Willow’ by Larry Grahame on 20 on the varied programme of events March and the Spring Show will be held members had enjoyed particularly the on Friday 11 April, both events to be in Clivia - one of the winning entries at last year’s Spring Show visit of Nick Hamilton who attracted a St Joseph’s Parish Centre commencing large audience to the first meeting to be at 7.30 pm. The schedule for the Spring the two shows which had been badly affected held in the Lighthouse Community Church Show will be circulated to members shortly. by the weather. Big Country to play at Reepham Festival

Organisers of this year’s Reepham festival have announced that legendary rock band Big Country are to headline the two-day festival in August.

From 1983 onwards Big Country delivered a series of multi-million selling singles and albums including the classics In A Big Country, Wonderland, Fields of Fire and Look Away. The 1990s saw them touring with the likes of The Rolling Stones and The Who. In 1998 they opened for the Rolling Stones on their ‘Bridges To Babylon’ tour of Europe prompting Mick Jagger to comment that Big Country were ‘one of the best opening bands we ever had’. 2007 saw a reunion of the band accompanied by renewed success, endorsed by appearances at the Isle of Wight, T in the Park, Oxegen and V Festivals in 2011 and 2012. Last year saw a major tour with new bassist Derek Forbes,

ex-Simple Minds, who was voted Best Scottish Bass player of all time.

‘We’re really pleased to have been able to secure Big Country, especially when they are being scooped up by major festivals across the UK and Europe’ said Festival Chairman Steve Jenkins. ‘It just reinforces Reepham’s growing presence on the festival circuit. Reepham has a reputation for being able to bring in a well-known headline band each year - Big Country continues that tradition and will undoubtedly appeal to older and newer fans alike.’

Around fifteen bands and artists will be performing over the Festival weekend of 9th and 10th of August and ‘Early Bird’

tickets are on sale from Saturday 1st February priced at £17.50 instead of the full price of £20. Discounted camping tickets are also available for a limited period

‘We’re expecting even more people to buy in advance this year’ explained Steve Jenkins ‘partly because the event sold out in 2013 and we had to close the gates early, but also because Big Country are appearing – which has already attracted a lot of attention through social media such as Facebook and Twitter.’

Details of ticket prices can be found at www.reephamfestival.co.uk and can be bought from UEA Students’ Union at www.ueaticketbookings.co.uk 01603 508050 and at Soundclash, St Benedict’s Street, Norwich, Very Nice Things, Reepham and from Whitwell & Reepham Station.

Environment Agency job cuts puts our coast at risk, argues Labour...

North Norfolk Labour Party has criticised the Government over funding cuts which has led to 1,500 jobs being cut from the Environment Agency - weeks after the Prime Minister praised their efforts in North Norfolk. The organisation, which oversees flood and coast protection, is having to deal with government cuts to the Department for the Environment. The local Labour Party believe the move is putting public safety at risk, and have said that more investment in flood and coastal defences is vital, especially as it is predicted Britain will see more bad weather like was witnessed at the end of last year. The move came just weeks after MP Norman Lamb and the Prime Minister visited Wells praising the organisation and promising to do all they could to help communities affected. The Environment Agency issued nearly 7,000 flood alerts and warnings in 2012-13 – the largest number in its history. They are involved in maintaining rivers, deploying sandbags, and giving flooding warnings. Denise Burke, Labour’s Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for North Norfolk, said “Successive governments learned the lessons of the 1953 floods by investing in coastal defences, but that work could be undone by these cuts. Central government must reconsider its decision to cut funding to the Environment Agency and invest appropriately in robust emergency responses as well as fund the costly clear- up operations. Damage caused by the surge at Local MPs who supported these cuts are putting costcutting ahead of public safety and the economy of North Sheringham promenade in December 2013 taken by Callum Ringer Norfolk. We need collective action through central and local government to protect our communities.”

CQC dementia inspection programme

Following last month’s G8 Summit on dementia, Norman Lamb MP is calling on his constituents to share their personal experience of care for people living with the condition, to help inform a ground-breaking national programme of inspections which is being led by the Care Quality Commission (CQC). The CQC is undertaking 150 inspections of care homes and acute hospitals across England until the spring of 2014. The findings will help paint a picture of how people with dementia are cared for with a view to improving the quality of care for people with the condition. People can share their experiences with the CQC in the following ways: • by email at dementiafeedback@cqc.org.uk • by telephone on 03000 61 61 61 or • online via a webform CQC is also working with local groups to gather people’s experiences including: Age UK, Dementia Action Alliance, Regional Voices, Dementia Advocacy Network and the Race Equality Foundation.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

With Spring now fast approaching, it is time to make that important decision to get your cat neutered to avoid unwanted pregnancies and having to find homes for the resulting kittens or place them into our care because homes cannot be found (we had 153 kittens in care last year). Obviously it is important that the female cats are neutered but equally so to neuter the males who will travel miles to find an unneutered female and consequently take the risk of being hit by a car on busy roads or contacting FIV or FELV from other unneutered toms. This is born out from our recent experiences as at present we have three cats in care, all male, all with FIV, and all have come into care as strays, although it is obvious they have had homes in the past as they were all very friendly and affectionate. As they have very likely strayed from their original homes in search of females and got into fights with infected cats, they will now all need new indoor homes either as the only cat or with other cats infected with FIV. Bombadier, Jude and Granville are all such lovely cats and if only their owners had got them neutered, perhaps this would not have happened.

Last year, as is usual, we received a grant from our Head Office to pay/help pay for neutering cats where the owner could not afford to, but

this had all been spent by April. All help with neutering from May to December came from branch funds. Although we are happy to help with the cost of neutering (both females £26, and males - £20) we hope that people who can afford to pay for this will do so. It takes a lot of time and effort to raise money for the branch and we need to ensure the money is spent in an appropriate manner.

Percy - this little black cat with the white medallion is the only one of his litter still in care. He is lovely friendly lad so hopefully will get a home soon.

As I prepared this article I heard from Stephanie that she had just taken in seven cats (a mum and six 9 month old kittens) plus five 4 week old kittens and the next day a further five kittens would be coming into care from another household. If only their owners had got the cats neutered! There is now “no more room at the inn”.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.cats.org.uk/northwalsham for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered. If however you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher).

Walking in a Winter Wonderland

Caring for your dog is a year round job, but in the cold weather we need to pay extra attention to the health and wellbeing of our four legged friends. Here are our top tips on keeping your dog in tip top condition during the winter months:

• Grab your coat and walk off the winter blues. Although you may not feel like going for a walk on dark wintry mornings and evenings, try to maintain a regular routine as the exercise will keep you both, happy, healthy and fit. • Be seen. Always wear reflective clothing to

make yourself visible in the dark. The same applies to your dog; invest in a reflective dog coat, collar or lead.

• Prevent sore paws. Rock salt is used to melt ice on footpaths and may irritate the paw pads, always rinse and dry your dog's feet when you get home to avoid cracked, sore pads.

• Stop snow balls. The fur between the toes should be kept short to avoid uncomfortable snow balls forming when out on a wintery walk.

• Wrap up warm. Older dogs or those with short, fine coats will especially feel the cold; consider keeping them warm in a cosy dog coat.

• Feeling thirsty? Don’t let your dog drink from puddles; they could contain traces of Antifreeze which is poisonous. It smells and tastes good to your dog, but it can be lethal.

• Be safe not sorry. Always consult your Vet if you are concerned about your dog’s health.

News from the White Horse Overstrand with Head Chef Nathan Boon

We are already half way through the month of January and we have started planning our Mothers Day Luncheon, but first we have to complete our preparations for Valentine’s Day, which this year is on a Friday.

We will of course be offering our usual romantic Valentines Day Menu and this year extending the celebrations to the 15th with a special Sharers Menu served in the bar and again offering our Valentines Menu as well as our as usual Evening Restaurant Menu.

To add to the atmosphere we have live music in the bar on the Friday and Saturday night.

We have also arranged a special pre- and post-Pantomime Menu for the Overstrand Pantomime ‘Sleeping Bewty’ which is being staged at the Parish Hall on the 20th - 22nd February 7.30pm as part of our charity fund-raising events for Nelson’s Journey.

It should be a really fun evening and we thought it would be a good idea to offer

For the topping spread cream cheese on the pizza base, sprinkle cooked chicken, red onion, dried mixed herbs and mushrooms and add the BBQ sauce to taste. Pre-heat the oven to 200c. Heat the baking tray and then lightly oil. Place the pizza on the tray and bake until the top bubbles and dough browns. Serve with a green salad.

a special meal deal by way of a thank you to both the audience and of course the ‘thespians’, many of whom are regulars at the White Horse.

Don’t forget we are still running our ‘2 fo1 Meal Deal’ Monday - Friday lunchtimes and our ‘Speciality Food Nights’ are also making a welcome return every Wednesday evening starting in February.

Norfolk teenagers shoot their way to success

Three North Norfolk teenagers will take part in a month long tour of Canada as a result of their team selection to the Great Britain Cadet Rifle Team, ‘The Athelings’.

George Anderson, Bryony Fraser-Burn, and Adam Partridge, all secured places on the team to tour Canada which will take place in August this year. The students are senior members of the Rifle Club at Gresham’s School in Holt and they will be following in the footsteps of their Club Captain, Clare Mawson, who toured with the Athelings in 2013.

George Anderson, 17 from Holt, has been shooting with the Club for five years and has considerable international experience under his belt. In small-bore shooting he has represented England in the annual British Schools Home International match for the past three years and has also shot for the combined British Schools team in the postal match against New Zealand Schools. George has also been selected as a reserve for the full Norfolk County smallbore rifle team. In full-bore shooting, George had the great honour of captaining the UK Cadets in the Inter-Services Long Range match at Bisley in 2012.

Bryony Fraser-Burn, 17 also from Holt, has excelled during her four years in the Club and still has one more year to go at the very top of schools shooting. Bryony has achieved a huge amount in the sport already. She is currently a member of the senior Norfolk County small-bore team and the Norfolk County ladies

team. She has represented the British Schools in the International postal match against New Zealand and shoots for the Scottish Schools ‘A’ team in the annual Home International match.

Having already toured the Channel Islands with the UK Cadets in 2013, Bryony is very much looking forward to touring Canada in 2014. She is very experienced when it comes to shooting against the Canadian Cadets, having shot in the AG Bell match against them at Bisley in 2012 and was reserve for the same match in 2013. She had a very successful Imperial Meeting at Bisley, in 2013, where she made it through to both the second stages of the Queen’s Prize and the St. Georges. She was the top cadet in the first stage of the Queen’s Prize with a score of 105.14 out of 105.21. The Queen's Prize is generally regarded as the most coveted prize in the shooting world.

Adam Partridge, 17 from Catfield, also has an equally impressive history in the sport. He has

represented the British Schools in the International postal match against New Zealand and has shot for England ‘A’ in the Home International match for the past couple of years. It is with the full-bore rifle, at Bisley, that Adam has really excelled. He has shot in the Inter-Services Short and Long Range matches, at the Imperial, in both 2012 and 2013. He already has plenty of experience of shooting against the Canadian Cadets having been a member of the AG Bell team in both 2012 and 2013. Adam was also selected to shoot for the UK Cadets on their tour of the Channel Islands back in 2012. One of his biggest shooting achievements to date was qualifying for the final of Her Majesty The Queen’s Prize at last year’s Imperial Meeting. Only 100 of the world’s top shooters make it into the final each year and it is exceptionally rare for a Cadet to achieve this.

All three will take up their duties at the Imperial Meeting at Bisley, in July. As Athelings they will shoot against the Royal Canadian Army Cadets in the UK leg of the Rex Goddard match, and will also be competing for selection for the UK Cadets team that compete against the same team in the AG Bell.

The team then spend the whole of August in Canada, taking part in the Dominion of Canada Rifle Association meeting at Connaught Ranges, Ottawa. They will shoot in both individual and team competitions, including the second stage of the Rex Goddard match.

RNLI to launch national WW1 touring exhibition featuring inspirational lifeboat rescues The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) is to feature six inspirational lifeboat rescues within its national touring exhibition entitled Hope in the Great War, commemorating the centenary of World War One (WW1). The free-to-attend charity exhibition, funded by Arts Council England, will honour the bravery of RNLI volunteers who risked their lives to save others during WW1 by raising awareness of six relatively unknown heroic lifeboat rescues.

Open to the public from 4 February to 28 February at the RNLI’s Henry Blogg Museum in Cromer, Hope in the Great War will start a 4-year tour of RNLI and other museums and of RNLI lifeboat stations. Hope in the Great War will highlight the extraordinary achievements of ordinary people who volunteered for the RNLI throughout the war years, conveying a sense of hope as many lives were saved at sea by the charity. The exhibition offers an ideal way for families and young children to learn about the work of RNLI volunteers during WW1 and will feature a play area for younger children.

on 9 January 1917.

• The 1914 Whitby RNLI lifeboat rescue of the wrecked hospital ship HMHS Rohilla which saw 144 people saved from the sea.

• Fraserburgh RNLI lifeboat’s rescue of the steamer SS Glenravel which saw 14 people saved from the sea on 8 August 1915.

• RNLI Port Eynon lifeboat’s service to the Dunvegan that took place 1 January 1916.

The exhibition was made possible by an Arts Council England grant of £78,200 awarded to the RNLI in order to share more widely the role of the charity’s coastal community volunteers during WW1 to help mark the centenary.

• The saving of 20 lives from the tanker Ponus on 3 November 1916 by Falmouth RNLI lifeboat crew and service men.

• The rescue of 23 survivors from the SS Alondra which was wrecked on the Kedge Rock off Baltimore on 29 December 1916 by Baltimore volunteers together with two Royal Naval trawlers.

The RNLI has been working with local community groups to create inspirational artworks that interpret their own local lifesaving story. These items, including a giant jigsaw, a podcast and an animation, will be included in the exhibition and allow the fullest story of the rescues to be told nationally, in an interactive and engaging manner.

The lifeboat services to feature within the exhibition include:

• Cromer RNLI lifeboat’s rescue of the Pyrin and Fernebo, which saw 33 people saved from the sea

Have a heart and donate for cancer patients in need

With thousands of cancer patients receiving blood transfusions every year, NHS Blood and Transplant is challenging people to make a date to donate to mark this year’s World Cancer Day.

On 4 February people from around the world will join together to dispel the myths around cancer for World Cancer Day.

Many people who develop cancer have a need for red blood cell or platelet transfusions during their treatment. Cancer patients may develop anaemia (a reduction in the number of red blood cells in their blood) or have a reduced number of platelets in their blood (the clotting cells which prevent bleeding). This can be due to the cancer or its treatment, including chemotherapy and radiotherapy. A blood transfusion can give a patient more energy and improve the quality of their life.

Derek Carr, NHS Blood and Transplant’s Lead Donor Relations Manager for the Anglia area, said “With platelets only having a shelf life of seven days and red cells having a shelf life of 35 days, patients depend on the generosity of blood and platelet donors to provide the vital transfusions they need.

“World Cancer Day is a good time to remember that blood is not only given in accident and emergency situations but also for patients undergoing surgery and receiving treatment for cancer and blood diseases. With around 7,000 units of blood needed every day, I would encourage both new and returning donors to make a date to roll up their sleeve and donate.”

Once blood has been donated, it is broken down into individual components including red cells and platelets. Platelets can also be collected separately from donors using special machines at 24 centres across England.

To find out if there is a blood donation centre near you or to book an appointment at any of the above sessions, call 0300 123 23 23 or visit www.blood.co.uk

Anyone aged between 17-65, weighing more than 50 kg (7 stone 12lbs) and in general good health could potentially start saving lives by becoming a blood donor. There is no upper age limit for donors who have donated in the last two years.

North Norfolk Railway: AN IMPORTANT STATEMENT

In the light of a recent press release from the promoters of the Norfolk Orbital Railway project, North Norfolk Railway plc has issued the following statement to correct any misconception:-

The North Norfolk Railway owns the line between Sheringham and Holt station, and will not in any way compromise the operation of heritage trains. It is the NNR's firm intention and strategy to continue to present the past as a vibrant attraction in the present, as one of the UK's leading preserved railways. The NNR

is broadly sympathetic to the aims of the promoters of the Norfolk Orbital Railway, but will never allow the heritage railway to be downgraded in any way. With a record number of 157,800 passengers carried in 2013, the NNR is making a valuable contribution to tourism and the economy of the region.

Record Passenger Numbers on Poppy Line Record passenger numbers last year on the North Norfolk Railway have now been confirmed.

APPRENTICESHIP VACANCY A new opportunity has arisen for an apprentice to join our friendly team at Mundesley Medical Centre. The role will involve assisting all areas including reception, administration and our busy dispensary.

The Poppy Line carried 157,800 passengers in 2013, a rise of 6% over 2012 and an all-time record for the line. The previous best was 150,497 in 2011. General Manager Trevor Eady said "Our volunteers and staff have produced an outstanding result, especially given the year's constraints on disposable income and a weather-hit Spring Gala at the start of the season. Key factors in the performance were an excellent August, and record traffic levels at Day Out With Thomas in May, the summer Steam Gala, and the September '40s Weekend."

Dear Margaret,

In response to the letter from Mrs Peta Jellis in issue 382, I would like to point out that if she wants good quality locally grown vegetables may I suggest that she looks no further than in the three excellent local greengrocers in Sheringham.

As for a decent coffee shop may I suggest that she calls in at The Mulberry Tearooms in Station Road (in the passage next to Papworth’s Butchers) where she will find very good freshly made tea and coffee, fresh homemade cakes, scones and food, pleasant surroundings and staff, china cups and saucers and comfy chairs. Yours sincerely, Mrs Hazel Harris, Sheringham

Dear Margaret,

Having lived in London for many years and travelled regularly on the Tube one learns that the best way to deal with attention seekers is to ignore them. Mrs Jellis is one such offender and it would have been more effective had she been treated in this manner. Why would anyone travel to another town in order to malign it? If one has the means to buy a second home, then it follows that there must be means to sell it, so why put up with such discomfort?

Of course, it is understandable that the comments have provoked such a large amount of reaction. I am of the same opinion as most of your correspondents; the town and the services provided are delightful. And Tesco’s presence here is not the eyesore that I feared, quite the reverse.

As for Costa, I frequently enjoyed coffee there with a colleague, who was addicted. Visiting our daughter, however, over the festive period, the family went to one of the Basingstoke branches and the coffee was disgusting.

So, Mrs Jellis, be careful what you wish for; enjoy what you have here, particularly the 90% Council Tax and if you can refrain from spouting any more nonsense, then I’m sure that the good people of Sheringham can put up with you. If not, may I suggest that you return to the Culinary Paradise that is Northamptonshire that helped give the nation those dining oases – the Motorway Cafes? Kind Regards, Ron Ramsay, Sheringham

Dear Margaret,

It seems staggering that January's cabinet meeting at North Norfolk District Council has been cancelled due to a "lack of business".

Individuals in the Tory administration have privately said much of the key decision making at the council goes on in these meetings, so I'm surprised they have found nothing to talk about at such an important time.

What's worse is that the administration explained on Twitter the decision was made in the middle of December - seemingly days after the floods hit the coastal areas of our district. What sort of message does this send out to the communities wanting more action on flood defences from both council and the government? The council will also shortly decide where the axe will fall for the next round of budget savings - which includes negotiations over our towns CCTV systems - these meetings should be used to give the public an opportunity to have their say before the final decisions are taken.

There is no word on whether allowances will be deducted for the reported shortage of business to deal with. Jono Read, Holt

Dear Margaret,

I am a Post Graduate student studying for an MSc in Environmental Management (Business) with Sheffield Hallam University, and I live in Dersingham, near Kings Lynn.

I am conducting some research for my final dissertation research project , so that I can finally produce a 15000 word report / dissertation and I am researching the potential social, ecological , environmental and economical impacts ( both positive and negative ) of Wave Energy Conversion Technology, when compared to Offshore Wind Turbine technology. I am particularly looking at a case study which compares Scira Sheringham Shoal Offshore Wind Turbine Array with Wave Energy Conversion Technology.

I have attached a link below for a 10 question survey and would like to request that people in the local community please take a few minutes to complete the questionnaire.

There are only 10 questions and will literally take a couple of minutes to complete. The survey is completely anonymous, and also will only be used for my research purposes with the University.

The University has a strict ethics code and code of conduct for carrying out such surveys and I have strictly followed this process.

I greatly appreciate your help with this, and you will hopefully find the survey very interesting.

Please note : there are only 100 responses available in the survey, so it is first come first served , and I sincerely apologise in advance if you have not been able to complete the survey.

Thanks very much and best regards,

NNDC Leader Tom FitzPatrick said “This is excellent news for everyone involved. Basing the Northern Area Children’s Services team in Cromer will make it much easier for District and County Council staff to work together for the benefit of vulnerable families living in this part of Norfolk.

“It also makes sound economic sense. The District Council has streamlined its operation to become more efficient at what it does and now employs fewer staff, while continuing to maintain our front-line services, so we have space available in our Cromer offices. We have agreed a 10 year lease with the County Council, at a commercial rent. As well as being good for our residents, his agreement will also be a more efficient use of public assets. We look forward to working more closely with our County Council colleagues at all levels in the future.”

James Joyce, Cabinet Member for Safeguarding Children at Norfolk County Council, said “This is good move which will benefit families in North Norfolk, as it means both councils will be able to work more closely together to support those in need.

“We want to work collaboratively with our partners wherever possible to share resources and make the best use of taxpayers’ money. This move will also give staff the opportunity to work in modern, open plan offices, making it easier to share information and work more efficiently.”

Cromer Youth Hub and Halsey House Care Home Get Together

On 7 December a group of young people from Cromer’s Youth Hub visited elderly residents at Halsey House. The British Legion funded care home for ex-forces personnel were delighted to have the group visit on the Saturday morning in their games room. The group of six young people spent time playing board games and swapping winning tips with residents, and getting to know each other. The North Norfolk Youth Hubs project, funded by the county’s Youth Advisory Board, assists young people in having more involvement within their communities. Young people take the lead role in coming up with ideas for projects, and organising themselves so that the activities run smoothly. Youth Worker, Will Mills, said “This project was a fantastic example of how much young people can contribute to their communities. Their energy, ideas and enthusiasm is really inspiring. I’m excited to see what they come up with next.”

Halsey House residents enjoyed the opportunity to spend quality time with young people, and the group are planning another visit in a few weeks’ time. Halsey House will be having some inspiring, regular visitors!

If you or a young person you know aged 13-18 would like to get involved in any of the Youth Hubs in Cromer, Sheringham, Mundesley or Stalham. Then contact the lead Youth Workers Will Mills williammills@map.uk.net 07876 864 281 or Hannah Garrard hannahgarrard@map.uk.net 07876 864 282

Norfolk school sings their way to National Choral Competition finals

The Chapel Choir at Gresham’s Prep School in Holt, made up of children aged 8 to 12 years, were recently selected as one of the top sixteen junior choirs in the country, enabling them to compete at the final of Barnardo’s Choral Competition on 3 March.

This is the first time the Chapel Choir has entered this competition and the children were delighted to be told they had been selected to perform at the Barbican Centre in London. A panel of judges will be chaired by Douglas Coombes MBE, composer, conductor and music consultant of the BBC Songs of Praise school choir competition.

The winning choirs from the competition will

be invited to sing at Barnardo’s Young Supporters’ Concert on 6 June at the Royal Albert Hall, London.

Nathan Waring, Director of Music at Gresham’s Prep School and conductor of the choir said “This is a marvellous achievement for the young choir who have only been singing together for one term. They work very hard in rehearsals to achieve the highest possible standard of singing – and have a lot of fun as well. The choir are not only looking forward to singing at the Barbican this term, but also

visiting the chapel of King’s College Cambridge and performing in our weekly school chapel services and concerts.”

Students and staff at Beeston Hall School celebrate with their Grade One certificates after mammoth music challenge They can make music

The Grade-one-athon, music challenge at Beeston Hall School has culminated in 26 members of staff passing their Grade One music certificate, which they duly received in January.

Emma Dale, the school’s Director of Music, initiated the Grade-one-athon last November when staff began learning musical instruments they had never played before. Their target was to pass Grade One in their chosen instrument in ten weeks – with the help of a pupil tutor.

“It was a hard few weeks,” says head teacher Robin Gainher. “We had to fit in our music lessons and practice around our daily teaching duties. But we’ve done it and are proud.”

It wasn’t just about having fun, Beeston Hall School was raising money for About With Friends, a Cromer-based charity that works to support children and young people with learning difficulties in North Norfolk.

Both staff and pupils have found the experience extremely rewarding and some staff are quite taken with their newly acquired skill. Several staff were so struck with their achievements that they intend to carry on to Grade Two and beyond including Robin’s wife, Ali, who is working towards her Grade 2 Singing Exam already!

St Andrew's Methodist Church Ladies’ Association

We were all deeply saddened at the loss of Jackie Starling and she will be greatly missed by all her friends. Our hearts go out to her husband and all the family.

On 14 January we enjoyed an evening of Bingo, arranged by Linda. On 28 January we will have a talk by Matthew Smith and on 11 February we will welcome Margaret Mitchell with her "Life in embroidery". 25 February will be a social evening in the Church Hall, Cromer Road, Sheringham 7.45 for 8pm.Visitors are always very welcome.

“So far we’ve raised £950, which is brilliant,” says Gainher. “We are planning reciprocal visits between our pupils and similar aged About with Friends members where we can all share music activities.”

Are you friendly and outgoing? Do you have a few hours to spare per month?

You could change the life of a child or young person.

Action for Children’s Norfolk Independent Visitor Service is looking for volunteers to befriend young people who are looked after by Norfolk Children’s Services and who have little or no contact with their families.

Young people who are in care, experience huge change in their lives, can be very isolated and emotionally vulnerable. Volunteers act as adult role models and enable children to have someone who is outside of ‘the system’ in their life. Someone who is there just for them.

Volunteers offer a listening ear, understanding, support and encouragement and have lots of fun in the process! Volunteers get 22

to take their young person out on trips and visits to places such as the beach, cinema and zoo or they often simply have a kick around in the park or sit and chat together over a coffee.

You don’t have to have experience to volunteer you just need to be committed to the improving the life of children and have some free time on a regular basis.

For more information please contact Steph at the Norfolk Independent Visitors Service on 01362 697537 or 07843345740, or e-mail: independentvisitors.norfolk@actionforchildren.org.uk Website: www.actionforchildren.org.uk Sheringham Independent 384 February 1st 2014

Top Class pianist and Orchestra to visit North Norfolk The New Year sees the continuation of a wonderful subscription series of concerts at Gresham’s Auden Theatre in Holt.

For Bach lovers, Wednesday 5 February is a date to keep clear as pianist Angela Hewitt, along with Julia Schröder (violin) and Andrea Oliva (flute) perform and all-Bach programme a few days before performing the same concert in Wigmore Hall. We are delighted to have a sneak preview and to have persuaded such a world-class performer to come to the Auden!

A week later on Wednesday 12 February, the European Union Chamber Orchestra with their

flamboyant leader Hans-Peter Hofmann and oboist Arco van Zon return for the third time to work with our strings players and also this year, with the Choir. Haydn’s Little Organ Mass, Elgar and Vivaldi will ensure another wonderful concert from this renowned chamber orchestra.

KELLING PROBUS CLUB

On Thursday 16 January at The Dales Hotel, Upper Sheringham, Vice-Chairman Tony O’Shea welcomed 21 Members, our two speakers and two guests. He called for a one minute silence in honour of Geoffrey Goodman, our Hon. Sec., who sadly passed away on Sunday 12 January. Our guest speakers were Colin Seal, aided by his grandson Ian, who gave a fascinating talk and slideshow on the subject of community art. Colin is the artist who painted the murals on the Sheringham sea-wall. He was originally a sign-writer and had moved to America where he lived for 18 years, in Florida and Alaska. It was here that he had developed the technique of air-brush painting the sides of a bus, eventually using a vinyl wraparound so that the painting could be removed without trace. He had to stop painting life-like views of the interior of a loaded truck on its (closed) tail doors because of the concern of followers that items were about to drop off! An example of his bus-painting can be seen on our local streets in “Postcards from Sheringham”.

Full details of the Subscriptions concerts can be found on www.greshams.com and for tickets call the Auden Box Office on 01263 713444. The cost of the full series is only £55, or tickets can be purchased separately. All concerts take place at 8pm in the Auden Theatre. With four concerts remaining in the series (other performers include cellist Raphael Wallfisch and the Isimsiz Trio), it is still cost effective to buy a subscription ticket and be sure of seats at these great concerts.

For further information about anything in this release email Fiona Ross, Music Administrator at Gresham’s at fross@greshams.com.

On matters of Club business, the Vice Chairman thanked Terry Penrose for taking over temporarily as Hon Sec and for arranging the Christmas Ladies luncheon at Sheringham Golf Club which was a tremendous success. Members have been invited to a meeting with the Cromer & Sheringham Probus Club on Tuesday 4 March at The Links Hotel for lunch and a talk by David Clayton, and Ken Murray circulated a list of four possible outings for 2014. Our speaker next month will be Barbara Miller who will talk about “Victorian Norwich” - if you would like to join us, please contact Kevin Clingo on 01263 824624.

Colin has lived in Sheringham for eight years and has turned his attention to murals in public places where local residents, especially children, can become involved. His work on the sea-front, the clock tower, the bus shelter and many other local structures is well known. Colin and Ian described their plans for a Viking Festival on 22-23 Feb to commemorate the establishment of a settlement at Upper Sheringham, thought to be named after the Danish warlord Scira. Clive Mitchell thanked them for an excellent presentation.

The Sheringham & Cromer Lions Club

The Sheringham & Cromer Lions Club were formed in April 2011 and as we were only few in number we had to be a Branch Club of Taverham & District Lions Club. But I am pleased to announce that on 24 October 2013 we were granted our Charter which means that we are a fully functioning Club in our own right.

The aim of Lions Clubs is to provide financial and physical support in the community in which it is based. This may come in many forms and is usually requested to provide funds for some need where somebody or organisation cannot provide the funds themselves. An example of this is where a disabled person, by needing a different wheelchair because of a change in their circumstances, will need a different or modified shed to store the chair. The Lions have not only provided funds for the modification but undertook to see the work done. The pool of funds to support the help we offer is raised by holding street collections, attending fetes etc. with our Lion Tombola

Stall, Bric-a-Brac Stall etc. Also by holding Quiz & Chips evenings etc. Being a lion is not all work we also have a very active social side where we arrange Theatre trips, Brewery visits, Darts or Carpet Bowls evenings etc.

Throughout the year Lion Clubs collect used spectacles through a network of spectacle boxes in local chemists and hospital. Most of the recycled glasses are distributed to people in need in developing countries where they will have the greatest impact. The Sheringham & Cromer Lions like other Lions Clubs support the Lions Recycle for Sight program and we have collecting boxes in Lloyd's Chemist, Sheringham and Cromer Hospital. So please if you have some old pairs of glasses in your dresser drawers or in an old desk that you no longer need please pop them into one of our collecting boxes or you can call Lion Brian on the number below and we can arrange collection. We also collect hearing aids.

Another ongoing scheme that many Lions Clubs operate is Message in a Bottle (MIB).

Sheringham History Group

At our first meeting for 2014, an excellent presentation about the newly named Sheringham Shoal Wind Farm, was given by Ms. Kay Reeve, team assistant to management for the firm.

The name change from Scira Wind Farm became effective January, 2014 with the ownership split 50% Statkraft and 50% Statoil.

The construction phase began onshore, laying cables and building power stations. There followed laying offshore cables, and the installation of two substations and 88 wind turbines offshore. As each turbine was installed it began producing electricity. This power is sent to one of two offshore substations, to regional grid at Salle and from there to the National Grid at Norwich.

Just as the construction was built efficiently the location at Sheringham Shoal was chosen for cost effectiveness. The Norfolk sea wind is constant and often high, the depth of the water is shallow which means less need for deep drilling for the turbines, also shipping lanes and fishing less affected. The electricity generated by The Sheringham Shoal Wind Farm is enough to power 220,000 homes.

The UK has been the leader in offshore wind farms since October 2008 with as much capacity already installed as the rest of the world combined. For more information and newsletters visit the Sheringham Shoal visitor centre at The Mo Museum on the seafront. You may also

The idea of this is that we can supply you, completely free, with a small container which you can put in the fridge. The container will have inside it a form which you complete with your details of any health problems you may have and also details of medications you are taking. We also supply two small green stickers - you put one of these on your fridge door and the other on or near your front door. Should anything happen to you and the paramedics or other emergency services have to call they will look for these stickers and go to the fridge so that they are made aware of your health problems. If you would like a MIB please feel free to call Lion Brian on the number below.

If you would like us to collect some spectacles or would like a MIB or just like to see what we do or are interested in becoming a Lion please contact Lion Brian on 01263 821276 or email brihaz@btinternet.com.

view the wind farm from a high-powered telescope located in the special viewing tower.

The Sheringham History Group would like to thank Ms. Kay Reeve for her information packed talk about a mammoth futuristic project that will undoubtedly echo through local and UK history.

Memories of Loved Ones on New Year’s Eve We’ve all had sadness in our lives Special people who were by our side, Life goes on we know that’s true But it’s hard to shake off those days of blue. Thank goodness for love and friendships too From people and pets that care about you.

Good health and happiness. And although we’re all here to say ‘Happy New Year’ Let’s raise a glass to absent ones so dear.

Tonight is a night when memories stir Remembering times with the loved ones we’ve lost, We move on to another year and hope we find
