Crab & Lobster Festival hands out grants totaling £5,000 to community groups across Cromer and Sheringham Continued from front cover...

Many of the projects which were successful will be working will local school children including Sidestrand Hall School (funding for the Life Skills Flat), Henry Blogg Museum & Cromer Museum (funding a new Nippers Club for Under 5s) and the Crazee Kidz Club (funding their Young Meets Old programme).

Festival Chairman Tony Shipp said “this year’s grants help to continue the Festival’s tradition of raising money for local charities through the Annual Charity Auction and we are delighted that so many local community groups will benefit from them”.

Over the past three years the Crab & Lobster Festival has donated over £29,000 to local charities. At a time when fundraising is an uphill challenge, voluntary and community groups are more important than ever before and these grants will really help at a grassroots level.

The Festival, which recently announced details of their annual art trail for 2014, will run 16-18 May. Sponsorship opportunities are now available. Please contact the Festival via enquiries@crabandlobsterfestival.co.uk

Wanting to start the year of as we mean to go on making a difference to women’s lives we held an open meeting on 10 January about Self Harm. Bianca Finger-Berry of the Critical incident support team for Norfolk County Council gave an interesting and informative presentation. There were several members of the wider community and High School community who had come along to find out about this increasingly common concern for our adolescents and adults. They thanked us for raising the profile of this issue and for also offering direction as to where support was available. Although it was beyond the experience of many members there was a lively discussion about the factors which may contribute to the increase in self harming and members of the community shared their experiences and ideas how to help young people.

Still focussing on a making a difference we held an open Evening on 20 January at The Lobster Pub for new members. An enjoyable evening for all, which has brought some new members and highlighted the changing face of WI. The 24th of January saw several of our members visit Aid Africa in Holt handing over 5 large blankets, knitted by members for children in Malawi, who have no bed, let alone covers and sleep on dirt floors. This has been a project which has both challenged and brought us all together, with people who have never knitted learning off friends and family. We will be continuing to work on this worthwhile project throughout this year.

Monday 10th February is our next meeting with a bring a friend night. This is very much a social evening with the opportunity for a glass of wine and cake with a fascinating insight into Olive Edis, an inspirational female photographer who was not only a war photographer but also became known as the photographer of Fishermen and Kings. The Ladies who munch have events planned, as do the walking group, artbuffs and our cinema group. Trips involving scuba diving and Ladies race day are also on the cards, so if you want to come along and be part of a lively social group with the opportunity to meet new friends, set yourself new challenges and learn new skills, whilst making a difference in the community and wider world, please come along to our meeting on the 10th Feb at St. Joseph’s Church Hall Sheringham at 7.15pm (doors open at 6.45pm) FB Sheringham Wi and twitter @sheringhamwi Tel Janice on 826801 secretarysewi@gmail.com

An eventful week for Sheringham, 99 years ago

On 23 January 1915, The SS Empress was steaming from London to Sunderland, when she struck an old shipwreck on Sheringham shoal. The crew were picked up by the Henry Ramey Upcher and landed in Sheringham, before the Captain and the Steamship Empress drifted helplessly, the vessel eventually sinking and settling on the seabed in the Fairway.

Four days prior to that, on the evening of 19 January 1915, the Captain of Zeppelin L3, heading on a bearing to drop ordnance on targets on the Humber, was forced off track by bad weather, and passed over coastal towns in North Norfolk, dropping the infamous bomb on Sheringham, which failed to explode, and was carried out in a bucket.

As a Captain of your business, whether large or small, Limited Company, or Sole Proprietor, you will have to navigate through difficult waters, and against the headwinds of the challenging economic climate. It makes sense to have a good awareness, at all times, of the condition of your business, the position and direction of your business, and the prevailing weather conditions, and how they may impact your plans for success and growth. Advanced planning with your accounts and tax advice will help you to avoid your business running aground, being blown off course, or being forced away from the business goals that you had set out to achieve. A good Accountant can help you to be a good Coxswain, and assist you in the safe navigation of your business

Grant takes The Patch another step forward

The Sheringham Community Smallholding, otherwise known as The Patch, has been awarded a substantial grant of £8,600 from the Clothworkers' Foundation, enabling capital developments on this exciting project to continue.

The Clothworkers' Foundations was set up by The Clothworkers' Company in 1977. It aims to improve the lives of people and communities by awarding grants for suitable projects. Many charities and community initiatives have already been helped in this way, The Patch being one of the latest. Sheringham Woodfields School, Sheringham Primary School and Sheringham High School have a particularly strong connection, with pupils spending time on the smallholding learning what is involved in food production and caring for livestock.

Matthew Smith, Director of The Patch and Business Manager of Sheringham Woodfields School is delighted with the award. "I applied for the grant back in November 2013," he said. "We already have plans for the money. We will firstly use it to buy and construct a second, but smaller, polytunnel with improved wheelchair access. It will also cover the cost of providing an additional set of raised beds plus the necessary compost and soil.

All the work involved in the forthcoming project will be carried out by local contractors and volunteers, and when completed, will be available for everyone. However, it will especially benefit the pupils at the three schools, who gain confidence, skills and life skills from working on The Patch.

"This very generous award will allow The Patch to gain strength, to grow and cater for more children at The Patch at any given time. "The Patch is located on the site of Sheringham High and Sheringham Woodfields Schools. Anybody interested in becoming a volunteer at The Patch, can contact me on 01263 820520, email: manager@sheringhamwoodfields.norfolk.sch.uk." Sheringham Independent 385 February 15th 2014

Non-surgical option for treatment of varicose veins

Coltishall Clinic is pleased to announce a treatment program for varicose veins. Endovenous laser therapy is a quick, minimally invasive alternative to traditional vein stripping.

Endovenous laser therapy is a relatively new outpatient treatment that can be performed under local anaesthesia in less than an hour. Varicose veins occur when the vein is not functioning properly to return blood from the lower leg to the heart. Each vein has a series of valves that open to allow the flow of blood to the heart, and close to prevent backflow (otherwise known as “reflux”) of blood back into the foot. The walls and valves of veins are thin and elastic, and can stretch due to a variety of conditions including pregnancy, heredity injuries, inflammation and age.

Approximately half of the population has some form of venous disease, and varicose veins affect about one out of two people age 50 and older, and 15-25% of all adults.

Previously, treatment of painful, swollen varicose veins required a surgical procedure called vein stripping, where the vein was completely removed from the leg.

More recently, endovenous laser therapy has been developed. Bulging varicose veins in the lower leg are usually caused by a faulty valve located higher in the leg that can’t be seen at the surface.

The endovenous laser therapy treats the source of the problem, which then causes the varicose vein in the lower leg to shrink and disappear.

Endovenous laser therapy involves the insertion of an ultrasound-guided laser fibre directly

into the incompetent great or short saphenous vein. Laser energy heats the vein from within, causing it to shrink, collapse and seal shut. Patients experience minimal discomfort, and they can return to normal activities the same day. Because there are many veins in the leg, the blood that would have flowed through the closed vein simply flows through other healthy veins after the laser therapy.

Coltishall Clinic also offers sclerotherapy and lasers to treat leftover spider veins.

For more information or to book an appointment, Call 0800 0430737 or visit www.coltishallclinic.co.uk.

Dear Margaret,

I would just like to say a huge thank you to the customer service team and manager at Tesco, Sheringham. I was unfortunately attacked by a dog that had been tied up outside their shop recently. I was very shocked and in tears and they were amazing - the manager even went to the trouble of calling me at home at 7.30pm that evening just to make sure I was ok Name & address supplied

PCSimple.co.uk says “DON’T PANIC!!” Microsoft is stopping support for Windows XP on 8th April 2014. With no more security updates after that date.

If you're one of the (30% of desktop users) many Windows XP users out there, the big question is, what happens when support stops? Before you get too worried, it's important to understand this doesn't mean other manufacturers will do the same, so you can still update other bits of software. If you're using Internet Explorer under Windows XP, it's time to stop. Windows XP only supports Internet Explorer 9, which means that it's at least two versions out of date and vulnerable to some exploits. Fortunately, both Google Chrome and Firefox have been continuously updated for Windows XP, so you can download the latest version and be confident that you'll get future updates, too. Limited accounts are a great way to use Windows XP securely as they don’t allow you to install or remove applications, or make system-wide changes. So, if you run some malware, it will be as limited as you are. Unless there's a massive vulnerability that security software cannot protect against, Windows XP should still have a long life in front of it. As long as security software, drivers and other applications have Windows XP updates for them, the operating system can continue to be used securely and ŽŵƉƵƚĞƌ ^ĂůĞƐ͕ ^ĞƌǀŝĐĞ Θ ZĞƉĂŝƌ reliably. Sheringham Independent 385 February 15th 2014

With spring poised to fully launch herself upon us, it's a great time of year for the beautiful fresh fish that this coastline is rightly famous for. My pan-fried seabass is always amazingly popular but of course pan-frying is perfect for many different types of fish, including these incredibly tasty mackerel fillets.

We're doing a lot of work in the garden at the moment as we gear up for our debut season of glamping – glamorous camping – which we are hosting at the Grove for 2014 and is extremely exciting. We are working alongside Magical Camping who will be providing vintage Victorian bell tents – a throwback to the past when John and Ann Graveling used to hold many a summer camp on the field. Please get in touch with us if you fancy a glamp this summer!

And don't forget Mother's Day is coming up at the end of March!

I look forward to seeing you then, if not before. Best wishes, Charlie

National recognition for Norfolk choristers Three talented choristers from Norfolk have just gained places in the National Youth Choir (NYC) of Great Britain.

Emma Wright, an Upper Sixth student from Field Dalling who attends Gresham’s Senior School, has been offered a highly-coveted place in the National Youth Choir. Before gaining a place, Emma was a member of the Training Choir during which time she performed the Monteverdi Vespers at the Royal Albert Hall as well as singing on the NYC’s Britten Centenary CD recording. As Head Chorister and a music scholar Emma frequently takes part in school concerts and performances; and this term plays a lead role in the school's musical, Carousel. She will also play the role of Eponine in Sheringham Little Theatre's production of Les Miserables.

Mark Jones, Director of Music at Gresham’s Senior School said, “Emma has worked extremely hard on her singing over many years and this is a fantastic opportunity for her to develop further. She has been a member of the NYC Training Choir for the past year and she

fully deserves her place as a full member of the NYC. It is a tremendous achievement to have secured this place and she will gain enormously from the experience. I am sure that we will hear a lot more from Emma over the next few years.”

Charlotte Pollard, from Cromer, a Year 6 pupil at Gresham’s Prep School, has been offered a place in the NYC Junior Girls’ Choir. Charlotte is no stranger to performing, having been selected for the role of Brigitta in last year’s performance of The Sound of Music produced by Cromer and Sheringham Operatic and Dramatic Society. She is also a member of Gresham’s Prep School Chapel Choir and has appeared and sung in a number of school performances.

Nathan Waring, Director of Music at the Prep School said, “This is a great achievement for Charlotte where she continues to demonstrate her talents as a singer in performing arts both inside and outside of school. The school is very proud of her achievements.”

Congratulations must also go to former pupil, Charlie Jefford from Oulton who has also earned a place in the NYC. He was not “SPEECH! and his selection for the main choir is, therefore, quite an achievement.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Cats come into our care for very many reasons but for every one of them it is a stressful situation (even for the most laid back cats). They come into care and are confined in our cat pens to be cared for by complete strangers. Most take a few days to settle but some can take longer - it depends on the cat. At this stage it is important that we do not put extra pressure on them by trying to force contact. Talking quietly to them while we clean their pens without making any effort to touch them will help them to gain confidence and learn to trust people. The more timid cats may need a place to hide should they feel threatened and this can be provided by a cardboard box. For some cats, visits from people coming to offer them a new home can also be challenging and they may not react positively and let people see what delightful companions they will make. Very often a cat with a lovely temperament will be overlooked for this reason although, obviously, they eventually find a new home with someone who can sense their potential as a loving pet.

The same applies when a cat goes to its new home. Again, there is a potentially stressful situation with new surroundings and, now, a much larger area to explore. Although some cats do settle in straight away it is best to assume this will not always be the case and to give the cat several weeks to adjust. We advise new owners to provide a quiet area where the cat can hide as this will help it to feel safe and secure in its new surroundings. Confining it to one room to begin with and gradually introducing other areas it will have access to, will also help it to settle. It is important not to force contact on the cat and expect it to settle and accept fuss straight away as this can make the cat feel threatened. Some cats will not eat or use their litter tray when they first arrive and this is not unusual but you do sometimes wonder how long they can “keep their legs crossed”. The cat needs time to adapt to its new surrounding (sometimes this also includes adapting to new companion animals) in a similar way as people when they start a new job, go to a new school or

join a new club. If people do have any concerns Stephanie will be only to happy to discuss how to successfully work through this period of adjustment for both owner and cat.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.cats.org.uk/northwalsham for a Liquorice, lovely little mum description and photographs of the cats who loves to play now that her before giving us a call on the above kittens no longer need her number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

If, however, you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher).

Fairtrade for Sheringham – The History of Fairtrade

I'd like to explain why I'm so keen for Sheringham to become a Fair Trade Town...

My interest began in the early 80s when I heard how coffee from Latin America was being bought by Oxfam and other charities, the growers were not being exploited, but given a fair price for their coffee. What a good idea! I bought some, but the downside was that no-one in the family liked it

Ten or so years later I learned that a group called Traidcraft was buying jute and other products in a similar way - and the coffee had improved! Then Fairtrade and the familiar logo were created, making it easy to spot fairly traded goods. Besides promising a fair price Fairtrade guaranteed the producers would receive a premium each year to be spent improving their community - often this that a school or surgery-cum-hospital is built.

About ten years ago when I started having Fairtrade stalls, except for Oxfam and a few shops, charity stalls were the main outlets. Now almost all of the supermarkets stock some Fairtrade products, and they are used in restaurants and pubs too – just ask! But we need more businesses (including craft shops) to stock a bigger range of Fairtrade goods, which will help marginalised workers to improve their products and their lives.

I know that Sheringham is a helpful and caring community willing to assist others in need. By becoming a Fairtrade Town we can show everyone this commitment. The Steering Committee working towards this is now called "FAIRTRADE FOR SHERINGHAM.

During Fairtrade Fortnight (24 February – 10 March) we will be at the Little Theatre's Coffee Morning on 25 February, and also at the Christian Aid's Lunch at St.Joseph's on 4 March at 12.30, so come along if you'd like to find out more or help at the next event or contact me on 823134, or email edwardsmith20@btinternet.com

We look forward to seeing you. Brenda Smith

Written by Stephanie Connor – Solicitor with Hayes + Storr It has become popular to purchase houses as ‘buy-to-let’ properties. However, before renting out property a Landlord has a number of legal obligations to satisfy, some of which are detailed below.

Landlords are required to pay tenants’ deposits into one of two available schemes: a custodial scheme where the deposit is paid into a designated account held by the scheme administrator, or an insurance backed scheme, where the landlord retains the deposit but takes out an insurance policy to protect the tenant's deposit. This is intended to safeguard deposits for the tenant and to help with the resolution of disputes arising in connection with deposits. If a Landlord does not comply with these requirements he then will lose the ability to obtain possession of the property on two months notice under Section 21 of the Housing Act 1988, and can be ordered by the Court

to pay back an amount equivalent to three times the deposit.

fine through the Trading Standards Authority. There are other additional requirements for Landlords and it would be advisable to seek expert advice before letting your property.

Landlords are also required to ensure that the tenants of their property are living in a safe environment and there are specific obligations relating to gas and electrical equipment, and furnishings. All furniture supplied by the Landlord must be fire resistant. Failure to comply can result in fines of up to £5000 and/or a prison sentence where death or injury to a tenant occurs. Landlords are required to have safety checks carried out on all gas equipment every twelve months. A copy of the up to date safety certificate must then be supplied to the tenant.

“This article aims to supply general information, but it is not intended to constitute advice. Every effort is made to ensure that the law referred to is correct at the date of publication and to avoid any statement which may mislead. However no duty of care is assumed to any person and no liability is accepted for any omission or inaccuracy. Always seek our specific advice.”

It is also necessary for Landlords to supply all prospective tenants with an Energy Performance Certificate, although there is no obligation on the Landlord to carry out any of the energy saving measures recommended in the certificate. The certificates are valid for 10 years. Failure to comply can result in a £200

If you require advice on this or any other legal matter please contact our Sheringham office on 01263 825959 or email law@hayes-storr.com.

THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER SWEET PEAS

one, two or three blooms at most, small and on a modest, slender stem, and of maroon colour with bluish purple wings it had one redeeming feature, however, a captivating perfume.

Sweet peas in all their glory

The Sweet Pea has been called the ‘Queen of Annuals’. Its attractive blooms, brilliant range of colours and captivating perfume make it a favourite flower but it is delicate and ephemeral and it is not easy to find bunches of sweet peas for sale. The answer is of course to grow them in the garden and with a little care long stemmed flowers can be picked over a long season.

We can be fairly certain that seeds first arrived in England in 1699, sent to Dr Robert Uvedale, a schoolmaster at Enfield, Middlesex, by one Franciscus Cupani, a monk living in Sicily. As someone who was educated in Enfield and was in Uvedale House at the grammar school I guess I was fated to love sweet peas! The flowers of the 17th century were mean things compared with modern standards, probably

• Cover the pots with newspaper, or a polystyrene tile to keep moisture and warmth in and light out. Some heat will speed up germination but this is not essential.

• Sow the seeds two to a pot or cardboard loo roll before the end of March to get strong plants. All legumes like a long root run so choose deep pots.

• Push the seeds in to about an inch below the surface of dampened multipurpose compost.

Protect with slug pellets.

• As the plants grow tie them into the frame and if your soil is light and poor feed them with a general fertiliser.

Now you can let the plants get on with producing lots and lots of flowers, and all you have to do is to keep picking and deadheading.

If you want to see Sweet Peas grown to perfection I can recommend a visit to the horticultural tent at the Royal Norfolk Show at the end of June.

Crab & Lobster Festival 2014 launched Nip along to North Norfolk this May

This May Cromer and Sheringham will unite for the fifth year running to host the ever popular Crab & Lobster Festival.

Last month the organising group proudly announced their new Festival sponsor as well as launching their plans for 2014 - and there are more opportunities than ever to get involved with the festivities.

A full and varied programme will take place across the Festival weekend 16-18 May and headlining the sponsorship of this year’s Festival is The East of England Co-operative Society.

Festival Chairman Tony Shipp said “We are hoping to make this year's Crab & Lobster Festival the most successful yet. My committee and I are delighted that the East of England Co-operative Society are joining us as our main sponsor. With their policy of providing locally produced foods, this is a fantastic partnership.”

Nick Champion, Head of PR & Public Affairs at The East of England Co-operative Society said "The East of England Co-operative Society has been at the heart of local communities in one way or another for nearly 150 years. We believe in offering producers a fair price and consumers great tasting value so being able to support the Festival is great for us.”

"We celebrate local food in our stores every day with over 200 producers and suppliers so we know the immediate and wider economic benefits to communities from a vibrant rural economy. Jobs, a sense of pride in our region and wonderful food on our plates all come to mind so this Festival is a fun way of celebrating something very important to how we live." The Crab & Lobster Festival will kick off the coming holiday season with a feast of fun, food, art, music, heritage and entertainment. An Opening Concert on at Cromer Pier’s Pavilion Theatre will start the Festival on Friday 16 May. Hosted by the ever-popular Olly Day the concert will feature music by the renowned Sheringham Shantymen and French Shanty group La Grosse Erreur who the Festival welcome to England especially for the Festival. This will be a show for everyone who enjoys the seaside tradition of Sea Shanties, folk and irresistible humour.

The Festival weekend continues in Cromer on Saturday 17 May and in Sheringham on Sunday 18 May. The programme of events promises a feast of superb seafood, music, comedy, film, heritage events, a scrumptious seafood trail and the return of the Festival’s art trail. The Festival weekend will also host a seafood evening, children’s entertainers, buskers, bands, surprises, sea, sand, sun (with luck)...and very much more!

In 2014 the Festival will concentrate on highlighting the local seafaring heritage of Cromer and Sheringham through live demonstrations of fishing crafts where audiences can also ‘have a go’ and crab dressing competitions as well as cookery demonstrations from local and national chefs and fish specialists.

This week the Festival launched a range of ways in which local businesses, schools, community groups and individuals can get involved with this year’s celebrations. Central to this is the ‘Bootiful Boat Art Trail’ which will run in the same spirit as the decorated lifebuoys in 2013. For the sum of £60 sponsors will be supplied with a fibreglass boat planter to decorate and display as part of the Festival’s Art Trail which will run from Easter until August 2014. At the end of the trail all the boats will go into the Festival’s Grand Charity Auction on Sunday 24 August. The first 50 boats are now available to sponsor.

Alongside the Bootiful Boat Art Trail the Festival is encouraging local eateries to join their Scrumptious Seafood Trail. The trail, which will run from Easter to August will list local eateries which offer a Festival special seafood dish on their menus.

The Festival would like to see as many people as possible

getting involved. Festival Chairman Tony Shipp said “We are delighted to start the year on such a positive note. The Bootiful Boat Art Trail is a great way for visitors to explore the area and see what North Norfolk has to offer and it’s a great way for businesses to get creative.” He added “In addition to all the other attractions, this year Festival will place a greater emphasis on getting more food outlets involved through our Scrumptious Seafood Trail.” “The Scumptious Seafood Trail will mean visitors and residents can sample some of the wonderful seafood the area has to offer throughout cafes, pubs, restaurants and bistros in the local area.” With over 40 events planned across the Festival weekend this year’s Festival will offer an abundance of fun for all the family. Festival secretary Kate Royall said “In 2013 the Festival achieved enormous successes. Over 20,000 people enjoyed the Festival weekend and thousands more followed the art trail and we hope this year’s Festival, with an expanded programme of free events, will achieve the same success and bring more people to this fabulous area”.

The Sheringham Players present an Evening of Short Plays Showcasing New Talent

‘Beginners Please!’ is the traditional call heard backstage at theatres all over the world from the National in London to the tiniest of amateur dramatic companies held in the humble church hall.

It signals the imminent start of the play/opera/ pantomime and quickens the pulse of those who need to be on stage as the curtains open. The Sheringham Players, who are privileged to perform at Sheringham Little Theatre have heard the same call to arms for almost 50 years. However on 21 and 22 March at Sheringham Little Theatre, this call will have another meaning.

The Sheringham Players have been recruiting new members in order to keep going strong for another 50 years. To showcase

the new ‘beginners’ (both onstage and back) they are presenting something a little different. - a mix of short plays from five minutes to a full one act, ranging from sad through to downright silly - and from the pens of authors such as Harold Pinter and local favourite, David Tristram.

The whole evening will be compéred with short introductions to each play to set the scene.

The plays will include Score by Lyndon Brook, Night by Harold Pinter, Doggies by Jean McConnell and What’s for Pudding by David Tristram

THE SHERINGHAM PLAYERS will present ten plays each evening and of course members

Prolific Norfolk burglars jailed for 10 years

Two burglars who travelled across Norfolk and Suffolk raiding dozens of homes stealing high quality jewellery have been sentenced to more than 10 years’ imprisonment.

Paulius Mizincevas, 24, and Romas Sereika, also 24, were sentenced at Norwich Crown Court on Thursday on 30 January for their involvement in more than 30 burglaries where property, worth in excess of £66,000, was stolen. Mizincevas’ wife and another woman charged with handling stolen property were also sentenced.

The court heard Mizincevas and Sereika, both of Prince of Wales Road, Norwich, would travel across the county targeting large detached homes during the day and night, often forcing their way in through doors and windows before carrying out untidy searches.

The defendants would target high-value jewellery items and on many occasions would tip jewellery boxes out onto beds and steal selected pieces leaving behind low-value items.

After committing the burglaries the majority of

the property was sent back to Lithuania by courier where payments were then sent back to the offenders via MoneyGram transfers.

Both pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit burglary in connection with 31 break-ins and Sereika was sentenced to six years imprisonment while Mizincevas was jailed for four-and-a-half years.

Ernesta Judickaite, 27 and of Prince of Wales Road, was charged with handling stolen goods from six burglaries worth £6,500 and was sentenced to 100 hours of unpaid work.

Tatjana Sokolova, 21, also of Prince of Wales Road, was also given an unpaid work order for 100 hours for handling stolen property worth £300 stolen from four burglaries.

Homes were targeted in and around Norwich including Spixworth, Thorpe St Andrew, Horsford and Costessey as well as Hethersett, Cromer, Alpington, Roydon, Reedham , Aylmerton, Blofield, Hainford, Bergh Apton, Swardeston, Swanton Morley, Frettenham, Upton, Aylsham, Downham Market, Guist,

Witton, Old Buckenham and Great Barton and Eye in Suffolk.

Detective Sergeant Martin Clabon, from Norwich CID, welcomed the sentences and said they should serve as a warning to others.

"The burglaries committed by Mizincevas and Sereika were organised and executed in a well-planned manner. This is demonstrated by the fact the men used cars registered in false names to travel to them, would clearly target detached homes and used walkie talkies to communicate once inside homes.”

Detectives investigating the burglary series made a breakthrough when enquiries led officers to search a flat on Prince of Wales Road, shared by the defendants in May last year. Property was recovered from the address and later established to have been stolen from 13 burglaries.

"The group caused great inconvenience and distress to their victims, stealing valuable jewellery which often held great sentimental value to victims. This outcome proves that we are determined to target organised criminals and I hope this will act as a deterrent to others.”

Police warning after two arrested in card scam

Senior officers are re-issuing their warning to residents to be vigilant around a credit card scam where offenders attempt to get victims to hand over their money after two men were arrested in Norfolk.

In a recent incident in Terrington, a victim had been persuaded to give their PIN number over the phone and then told that their credit cards would later be collected by a taxi.

Two men, aged 18 and 19 and from the London area, were arrested on suspicion of committing fraud by false representation and have since been released on police bail.

T/Chief Superintendent Nick Davison, Head of Norfolk's County Policing Command, gave the following warning: "We are advising residents to remain vigilant and to spread the word and raise awareness of these types of crimes, particularly amongst vulnerable and elderly people.

Residents should remember the following: • Your bank, credit card company or the police will never ask for your PIN, bank card or bank account details over the phone – never give these details out. • The police will never call you and ask you to withdraw money from your account to give to a courier or taxi driver, regardless of how convincing they may seem. • If you receive such a call leave the landline for at least five minutes to make an outside call. Fraudsters will keep the line open and have been known to play ring tones, hold music and a recorded message down

the phone so the victim believes they are making a call to a legitimate number. • Use a friend’s or neighbour’s telephone instead. • Friends, family, carers and neighbours are asked to spread the word to ensure everyone is aware of this scam and what they should do.”

Anyone who believes they have been a victim of fraud should contact police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

North Norfolk Photographic Society

North Norfolk Photographic Society has moved! After several years, with increasing membership the Society reluctantly left the Methodist Church’s Loades Hall and held their first meeting in the larger Holt Community Centre on Wednesday 22 January.

To celebrate the occasion, member Bill Day CPAGB, a widely respected photographic judge, entertained with a talk ’The Alternative Picture’. And alternatives were what he presented.

Thursday Mornings 10.00am – 12Noon At the Salvation Army Hall Cremer Street Sheringham Search for jobs online

Over 22,000 people visited the Fisherman’s Heritage Centre and /or the Shell Fine Art Gallery in 2013, the largest number yet. The visitor’s book is completely filled up with comments from “super display and visit” to “wow” to “stunning”. In June last year the Shell Gallery provided an excellent Treasure

Quest clue location on BBC Radio Norfolk.

Bill started by saying that he thought judges, considering how much they criticised other people’s pictures, should put their own photos up for comment. And he got comment. He showed dozens, perhaps hundreds, of prints - often 5 prints from the same original showing the results from applying different adjustment effects. High Pass Sharpen (technical stuff this - sorry) applied with hard light blend for buildings and machines or with soft light blend for faces. Paler, darker, monochrome, sepia - all different ways of handling an image to find the ‘best’ result.

But, the members sometimes shared Bill’s view of which was ‘best’ and sometimes they did not! And as Bill said, other judges did not always agree with him either.

Sincere but light hearted thanks were given by Malcolm English who especially praised Bill for the work he had put into such an excellent and large display.

The Society meets on alternate Wednesday evenings at The Holt Community Centre. Visitors are most welcome and further information can be found either from the website www.nnphotosoc.org, or from Secretary Judy Knights on 01263 825418.

More North Norfolk communities to benefit from District Council’s Big Society Fund

North Norfolk District Council’s (NNDC) Big Society Fund Panel met recently to consider the latest grant applications.

The Panel awarded conditional grant funding totalling £44,186.10 to seven community projects across North Norfolk.

Successful applications include North Walsham Rugby Football Club, which was awarded £12,500 to improve club facilities for the benefit of players and spectators, as well as for the wider community to use the club for social and community events.

Antingham Village Hall Committee was awarded funding of £2,000 to install double glazed windows at the hall. This will both reduce running costs and help ensure the sustainability of this valued community facility.

A grant of £3,287.90 was awarded to Fakenham and District Light Operatic Society, which is run by volunteers and offers community theatre and entertainment in Fakenham, Wells and surrounding villages, towards the purchase of portable theatrical lighting. No longer having to hire theatrical lighting will reduce production costs and enable the Society, which particularly welcomes and supports the involvement of people with additional needs, to increase the number, type and location of its productions.

West Runton Scout Group was awarded £10,000 towards a project to extend and improve the facilities at the scout hall. This will benefit local and visiting scout groups and enable greater use of the hall by the wider community.

Wells Maltings Trust will receive £2,648.28 for an on line booking system for the Granary Theatre.

A grant of £1,750 for fencing will enable Ashmanhaugh and Beeston Preston Room Committee to enclose the area to the front of the Preston Room, which will improve safety and enable greater use of the outside space.

Smallburgh and Dilham Bowls Club who have recently moved to a new location were awarded conditional funding of £12,000 towards the provision of a club house.

As well as the grant awards from the Big Society Fund, conditional funding has also been approved by NNDC Cabinet for projects through the Council’s Enabling Fund.

Home for Wells was awarded £150,000 towards the conversion of the Wells Field Study Centre into 11 affordable homes.

The Atrium North Norfolk Ltd received a grant of £15,000 to support the development of a business plan for the Atrium in North Walsham.

There is still funding available for the current financial year, which ends in March. Further information about the Fund, including application submission dates, is available at www.northnorfolk.org

Our 28 January speaker was Matthew Smith who gave us a most inspiring talk and insight into the wonderful care given to the 95 pupils of Woodfields School. Now ten years old, this special school is constantly growing and has a waiting list of children who come from all parts of Norfolk. Every child is carefully assessed for their special needs and taught in groups of 2 to 5 pupils from the age of 2 to 19. There are specialist rooms, IT equipment, a sensory theatre, hydrotherapy pool and a sensory garden, as well as The Patch where the children can learn about food production and caring for livestock. Some children travel 5 hours a day to attend this wonderful school. The dedicated team of teachers are supported by specialists such as physiotherapists, speech therapists, nursing team and a doctor and are justly proud of their achievements. They are constantly Where looking for ways to raise money in order to give the children more hair care opportunities and they now have their own Charity shop, Woodfields is still Den. They believe that every child, regardless of his or her ability is of an art equal importance. Their next event is on Saturday 19 April from 10am to 12.30pm Children's Easter Egg Hunt to which everyone is welcome. For appointments contact FORTHCOMING EVENTS Melanie, Cathy, Sarah & Nikki

Early Bird Discount on Tickets for CHORAL WORKSHOP with COMPOSER PATRICK HAWES

To commemorate the centenary of the First World War in 2014 Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society has commissioned the internationally acclaimed composer, Patrick Hawes, to write a major new choral and o rchestral work for adult and children’s choirs and soprano soloist. This work, entitled Eventide (In Memoriam Edith Cavell), will premiere in Norwich Cathedral on Saturday 12 July 2014 with the English Chamber Orchestra and Elin Manahan Thomas.

Prior to the premiere Patrick Hawes will present a workshop at the Auden Theatre Holt on Saturday 17 May 2014 entitled “A composer’s insight into setting words to music”. He will be sharing the creative processes involved in writing this exciting new composition and talking generally about the relationship between words and music. Patrick, who is a former Classic FM Composer-inResidence, is best known for composing the Highgrove Suite for HRH The Prince of Wales and is also an Ambassador for the Prince's

Foundation for Children and the Arts.

Central to the day’s activity will be his latest work which is based on the life of Norfolk’s First World War heroine, nurse Edith Cavell , who is buried in Norwich Cathedral, and was executed in Belgium for her part in helping hundreds of allied troops to escape occupied Europe.

A unique opportunity not to be missed, the workshop runs from 11am to 4pm and is open to all ages (under 18s go FREE) and to singers and non-singers alike.

For those who wish there will be the opportunity to work with the composer as he rehearses sections of this exciting new work with the assembled singers (no auditions necessary).

Early Bird Tickets are priced at just £15 until Friday 28 March (£20 thereafter) from Auden Theatre Box Office 01263 713444 or email boxoffice@greshams.com

Thanks to grant funding from The Ernest Cook Trust and North Norfolk District Council Big Society Fund up to 160 FREE places are available for students from local schools.

Report estimates December storm surge will cost council around £3m Visit our website www.jennifereasterltd.co.uk

Repairing the damage caused by the Tidal Surge of 5/6 December will cost North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) around £3m says a report published last month.

The report has been written to inform MPs, Central Government and other interested stakeholders of the devastating impact of the storm and point out the vulnerability of coastal communities. It also stresses the importance of sound emergency planning and emphasises the resilience of the communities affected.

Initial estimates listed in the report put the total cost to the council at around £3m with, potentially, £1.6m of this being recoverable from insurers. Where possible the council will apply to the central government ‘Bellwin Scheme’ for reimbursement , however it

is understood that repairing essential infrastructure such as sea defences, promenades and associated structures such as railings, lighting, paths, steps and ramps is not covered. We are therefore seeking central government support through whatever mechanism to help cover our costs and provide future security.

In his introductory letter, NNDC Leader, Tom FitzPatrick says, “We estimate that the total cost of the storm surge to NNDC will be around £3m and we have already committed over £0.5m for which we had not planned for. This will have to be financed in the short term out of our reserves, but this will be insufficient to meet all of the uninsured costs and without extra funding this will leave the Council in a

very difficult financial position.

“However, I am very pleased with the willingness of both the Department of Communities and Local Government (DCLG) and Minister Brandon Lewis to engage in dialogue on this important issue.”

Amongst much else the report states that during the course of the surge 665 metres of council-managed sea defence was damaged, along with 3,000 metres of promenade and other seafront infrastructure and 100 Cromer sea-front chalets, and that during the recovery 40 tonnes of waste and damaged property was removed from Walcott and Bacton. Most of the damage to council-owned property took place in Sheringham, East and West Runton, Cromer, Overstrand, Mundesley, Bacton and Walcott.
