Stephanie excels and joins ballet stars in Swan Lake

Covering Sheringham, the Runtons, Holt and surrounding villages in association with the Cromer Times and North Walsham Times

The dreams of a young up-and-coming ballet star have come true. Nine year old Stephanie Claxton was selected at an audition in November from 200 young hopefuls. She goes to Sheringham County Primary School and is studying dance at the Clare Parle School of Dance.

Stephanie will appear as one of the Tsar’s Courtiers in an electrifying adaptation of Swan Lake at the Norwich Theatre Royal for three performances from 7 – 8 March with English Youth Ballet (EYB). The young dancers in the cast will dance alongside EYB’s stunning international principal artists in a professional production. They will gain an insight into what life is like as a professional ballet dancer.

The young cast are working with the EYB’s principal dancers at Sprowston Community High School in a 10-day intensive rehearsal process. EYB is a professional ballet company and each rehearsal day commences with the company being split into three groups for company ballet class warm ups. The rehearsal day continues with a complex timetable of different rehearsals running simultaneously in three studios at the school. The ballet is gradually pieced together like a complex jigsaw. At the end of each rehearsal day the whole company always gathers together in the main studio to share what has been learnt that day. NEW COMPETITION Continued on page 4...

Stephanie excels and joins ballet stars in Swan Lake

Continued from front cover.... British principal ballerina, Julianne Rice Oxley, says “there is such a wonderful team spirit in the young company” and speaks very highly of the standard of the young dancers “The young dancers we are working with in Norwich have great energy and attack. Working in a professional environment gives the students a unique insight into life in a ballet company. Stephanie is so lucky – I wish there had been something like EYB when I was training! I love my job! I ¬feel very privileged to be a principal with EYB as I get to work with some of the UK’s most talented young dancers. I find them incredibly inspiring!”

Stephanie says “I am nine years old. I started dancing because my best friend got me into it. Clare – my dance teacher – told me about English Youth Ballet and I decided to go for it. The audition was kind of scary because you didn’t know what was expected of you. I am really enjoying it so far. I am so looking forward to going on the stage.”

The Sheringham History Group

On 5 February Major Alan Read talked to us about The Salvation Army in Sheringham, focusing on the past, present and future. Major Read and his family arrived in Sheringham in October 2010 after assignments in Ipswich, Exeter and London. Throughout his talk he showed old group photographs taken during events organised by The Salvation Army in Sheringham. The first was taken in front of Emery's boathouse, where the first lifeboats were built. The Army began their work on the beach at Sheringham meeting with local people at approximately the turn of the century. Not far from the beach The Salvation Army began meeting in a building on Cremer Street in 1913 and in 1926 it was re-opened as a hall for gatherings. This same building was demolished in January 2010, leaving the local Army 'homeless' while a new state of the art meeting hall was built. The group met at Sheringham High School until the dedication of the new building in February 2011.

Major Read spoke of the founder of The Salvation Army, William Booth who visited Sheringham in 1905. His wife Catherine, bore him eight children, was a hard worker and had already died by 1890. William Booth began work at the age of 13, apprenticed to a pawnbroker in Nottingham. He became familiar with human misery at an early age joining the Methodist Church but in 1861 found it too passive. After settling in London he began helping people with social issues along with Catherine in the East London Christian Mission. After his wife's death he focused more on the 'army' aspect.

The photographic history of The Salvation Army in Sheringham was like a family album of people and events including 1908 - first young band, 1926 - Sheringham Songsters, 1953 - Harvest Festival, 1980 Sheringham band, and currently February 2011 New Hall. The care the Salvation Army provide such as helping the homeless, tracing lost family members, labour exchange and help in times of emergency as well as spiritual help are founding traditions that are carried on selflessly today all over the world. Major Read stated their philosophy, "We reclaim people". Loraine Greer

Sheringham Society Coffee Morning

Unfortunately, our speaker for 30 January was ill and unable to come to our coffee morning. We were extremely lucky that Dr. Michael Bennett, a member of the Society, stepped in at the last minute and gave us a most interesting talk about the latest developments at Bletchley Park. Most of the secrets are now out in the open, but there are still some things that are still not publicly known. It was a really excellent talk and our thanks go out to Mike for stepping into the breach for us.

Our meetings take place at St. Joseph's Church Hall on the Cromer Road, where there is plentiful car parking. Doors open at 10.15am for 10.30am, and admission is £3 to include tea or coffee and home-made cakes. Everyone is welcome, you do not have to be a member of the Society.

East of England Ambulance Trust announces more ambulance cover in Norfolk The East of England Ambulance Service Trust has announced they will increase ambulance cover in Norfolk - with a new ambulance based in Cromer. Campaigners have welcomed the additional cover, but there has been some scepticism as it is nearly a year after five extra ambulances for the county were announced but did not make it on to the road. It was revealed shortly after that the initial announcement last year that additional cover had been hampered by a lack of staff resource.

Act on Ambulances campaigners, from the North Norfolk Labour Party, are now asking East of England Ambulance Service Trust to reveal where those additional promised hours have gone.

The Act on Ambulances campaign was created over concerns about a rota shake-up that led to the number of Double Staffed Ambulances (DSAs) in Norfolk fall from 53 to 44.

Denise Burke, Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for North Norfolk, said "While we welcome any additional cover in North Norfolk we have had numerous promises of additional resource that did not come to fruition, and we are still looking for answers on a similar announcement made last year. Out of the 5 additional ambulances earmarked for Norfolk we do not know how many of of these actually ended up in action. The East of England Ambulance Service Trust needs to be more transparent about the changes to rotas so campaigners can keep a careful eye on the bigger picture.”

THANK GOD FOR MUMS

Roger’s

“A very short service for young children and their families, followed by tea for everyone”

To mark Mother’s Day this year St Peter’s Church are offering a new idea - The Tea Service. Taking place at 4pm the service will be very short and focussed on young children. There will be songs and a story, with the theme of thanking God for mums and all those who care for us. Older children and adults will be invited to join in too. After the service afternoon tea will be served for all. St Peter’s new chairs mean that there can be lots of space to move around in and all children are welcome, no matter how wriggly they are.

Assistant Curate Lynn Chapman said “We know that there are lots of families who would like to go to church together but that Sunday mornings are not always the best time and that services are often too long and too grown up for young children. We want to provide families with the opportunity to worship God together and to meet other families too. Hopefully this new way of thanking God on Mother’s Day will appeal to a wide range of local families and they will feel able to join us in what will be a very relaxed setting.”

St Peter’s already runs Noah’s Ark, a very well attended group for young children and their carers on Wednesday mornings from 10am. It is hoped that the new service will extend that work and other work with children and young people under the umbrella of the “King Fishers Project”. The Tea Service takes place on Sunday 30 March at 4pm in St Peter’s Church. Further information can obtained from the Parish Office telephone 01263 820040.

News from the White Horse Overstrand with Head Chef Nathan Boon

What a busy start to the year! We have had a wonderful response to our Theme Nights which give our patrons a chance to try something just a little different. Amongst the themes on offer are Seafood, Asian, Steak, Dingly Dell Sausage, Italian and Burger Nights. I am delight to announce that we have extended the 2 for 1 until the end of March. Mothers Day is already beginning to book so my advice is to call in and book a table as soon as possible, it is such a great day and it would be a shame not to be able to treat Mum.

We have also introduced an exciting range of lunchtime sandwiches ideal with a pint of real ale or a cup of coffee. Why not meet with friends and choice a selection and share them around? Served with a Greek Salad and Handcut Chips for just £7.50 its a nice way of passing a lunchtime. Choose from Sausage Bap, Emmental Cheese, Red

Onion Jam and BBQ Sauce, ‘Whites’ Club; Smoked Chicken, Griddled Bacon, Beetroot Relish, Aioli and Wild Rocket, Fish Finger, Tartare Sauce with Pickled Cucumber, Beef Tomatoes, Binham Blue, Balsamic Shallots and Baby Basil.

Don’t forget our great Sunday Roasts served each week until 3pm.

MUSTARD MASH

A simple recipe, great for pork dishes or smoked haddock and creamed spinach with a poached egg.

900g baking potatoes 1 bay leaf 125 ml hot milk 3-4 tablespoons of dijon mustard (depends on quality of mustard) 45g unsalted butter

► Peel and cut the potatoes. ► Bring them to the boil with a bay leaf and a pinch of salt. ► Simmer until soft. ► Strain well discard bay leaf. ► Put through a food mill if you have one, if not a masher is fine. ► Add milk, butter and mustard, season well and serve.

Sheringham Medical Practice

Patient Participation Group (PPG) monthly newsletter

The referral process: All the GP practices in the area have the same referral system where a large number of the patients are often referred to specialists. It is very useful to know what happens once your GP decides that you need to be seen by a Specialist.

1. The signed GP letter is sent to North Norfolk Healthcare Referral Management Centre (RMC) based at Kelling Hospital. At this central booking office a GP employed at the RMC will verify the urgency and check that the correct clinic has been identified. As from April 2014 the RMC will be merged with South Norfolk and will be based at Wymondham.

2. The RMC then telephones you, usually within 3 working days to discuss where you would like to be seen by offering a choice of hospitals and dates available. You then receive the confirmed appointment by post from the Health specialist or Consultant.. If for any reason you can’t be contacted by phone then an appointment will be sent to you.

3. There are some referrals that go directly to the specialist area, these include: Mental Health, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Podiatry, Speech and Language Therapy, Family and Child Services, Exercise, Palliative Care, Eating Disorders, Norcas, Private Hospitals/Clinics, Health Trainer, District Nurses/Community Matron, and Social Services.

Hopefully this has helped you to understand the referral process. If you require any further information please do ring and speak to the secretaries Tel 01263 ****? Also if you would like to speak to anyone on the PPG in confidence then please do ring Noel Gant 01263 825538, Janet Eastwood Tel 01263 822719 or Pauline Craske (Practice Manager) Tel 01263 820512 NB: The new online booking service for some surgery appointments as well as repeat prescriptions is now available. For more information ask the staff at the practice.

All Aboard, Volunteers!

Andrew Tunwell, General Manager, says “The volunteers’ contribution is essential to the running of the railway and its long term future.

On Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 March the Bure Valley Railway will be hosting its Volunteers Open Weekend for anyone interested in volunteering on the railway. The day will give the opportunity to meet existing staff and volunteers and see behind the scenes, including a chance to drive a steam engine!

Volunteering for the Bure Valley Railway is a great way to get involved with the local community, make new friends and learn new skills. This year we have an additional requirement for volunteers to man our new secondhand bookshop at our Wroxham Station which was completed end of last year. Whatever your age, whether you are male or female, if you have a couple of hours to spare or can make a more regular commitment, we would welcome your help.”

The Bure Valley Railway is Norfolk’s longest Narrow Gauge Steam Railway and operates over the nine miles between the market town of Aylsham and the Broads town of Wroxham.

The railway is owned by a small group of enthusiasts and is operated A Longstanding Volunteer entirely on a not for profit basis, with The Bure Valley Railway invites you any profits being reinvested. With the to see what fun you can get from becoming a volunteer and looks dedication and commitment of a small team of paid staff and active forward to seeing you. volunteers the railway now carries over 100,000 passengers each year.

Glamping at the Grove It’s the current ‘must-have’ holiday, but for one North Norfolk holiday destination it’s more a case of going back to the future.

Glamping- glamorous camping - has swept the nation as the perfect way to relax, unwind and enjoy the country under canvas, yet with all the luxuries one expects from a high-class hotel. And the craze is heading to Cromer as one of town’s oldest accommodation providers, the Grove joins forces with Magical Camping to provide wonderful holidays in the most beautiful surroundings.

Magical Events, run by husband and wife team Matt and Lisa Mazurek from Dereham, supply classic Victorian bell tents and tipis for

campsites all over Norfolk and the UK. They have been looking for a Cromer-based site for a number of years and have now found the perfect spot. The Grove, on Overstrand Road, is a Georgian summer house built by the founders of Barclays Bank and enjoys four acres of grounds, with walks through Warren Woods to the cliffs and the beach, plus an award winning restaurant, swimming pool and some quirky items including a decked pill box overlooking the gardens!

Glampers can also enjoy discounted rates on bike hire and surf lessons from Pedal Revolutions and the Glide Surf School in Cromer, as well as a welcome hamper from the Grove with goodies from local suppliers Icarus Hines and Crush Foods. In fact the tents will be

named after local cheeses – Gurney’s Gold, Copy’s Cloud and Binham Blue to name but a few.

The five-metre canvas bell tents come complete with all beds and bedding, lighting and vintage furnishings.

The Grove has been owned and run by the Graveling family since 1936, and during the sixties, seventies and eighties John and Ann Graveling and John’s sister Edna often held or hosted Pathfinder, Scout and Girl Guide camps during the long summer months.

Current owner Richard Graveling was just a boy when camping was a regular feature. “I remember when there were rows of old bell tents out on the field, and of course when we were very young we used to love pottering around and exploring – probably being a real nuisance!” he said. “We sometimes still have friends camping out on the field and so it’s always been a big part of summer here. So when my head chef Charlie Hodson got in touch with Matt and Lisa we were delighted that their approach would bring the past back to life here.” Mr Mazurek is looking forward to the summer – and bell tents are not the only string to the company’s bow.

RECORD-BREAKER ARRIVES IN TOWN

The big Poppy Line Steam Gala - Friday 7th – Sunday 9th March

The holder of the post-war British steam train speed record will be whizzing in to star in the North Norfolk Railway’s Steam Gala next month.

Sir Nigel Gresley, built in 1937, will arrive in style for the three-day event, steaming over the Sheringham level crossing currently expected at 1830 on the 5th March. Named after her designer, the engine created the landmark when she hit 112 miles an hour as the age of steam drew towards its close in May 1959 – and that was never beaten.

She is the sister engine of Mallard, the holder of the world steam train speed record with an astonishing 125.88 mph in the summer of 1938.

And she isn’t the only one of Sir Nigel’s creations to be gracing the Gala – a Great Northern Railway Class N2 engine will

be visiting from the Great Central Railway and, in a perfect marriage, will haul the Poppy Line’s unique set of quad-art coaches, providing a snapshot of the pre-second world war days when such trains were a familiar sight to commuters in suburban North London.

The Gresleys will be joined by engines from the Poppy Line’s own fleet, including George Stephenson – back in business after a major overhaul by the railway – and the popular B12 express, resplendent in the apple green colour of the old London and North Eastern Railway.

the day fares of £19 for adults. An advance booking discount is available until 28th February only. Go online to www.nnrailway.co.uk or call 01263 820 800. Tickets give free entry to the William Marriott Museum at Holt Station.

Cromer and Sheringham Probus Club

01263 739909 or 07901 335602

The chairman, Dave Vickery, welcomed fellow members, including one new one, to the first meeting of the New Year on 4 February. As usual, it was held at the Links Hotel in West Runton and the food was of the customary high standard.

email - janetspinksew@gmail.com

After lunch, Alistair Murphy, the curator of Cromer Museum, gave a fascinating illustrated talk on the subject of the photographer Olive Edis, which many felt would have justified a much longer presentation. The quality of the images was extraordinary and the local connections increased the level of interest.

WEDDING FAYRE

The next meeting is on 4 March, when we will be joined by members of both Kelling and Holt Probus Clubs. David Clayton, the Editor of BBC Radio Norfolk and Studio Presenter of the Sunday morning Treasure Quest programme, will be the guest speaker. His subject will be “the cars of my life” and listeners will be aware that classic cars get a regular mention in his broadcasts.

Prospective members for any of the clubs are welcome to come along as visitors to enjoy the meal, the talk and the company of Probus members. The clubs are open to gentlemen who are retired or nearly so. If you are interested, or know someone who might be, please contact Dave Vickery on 01263 824306 for more information.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

A recent article highlighted the importance of getting cats neutered not only to prevent unwanted kittens but also the spread of FIV and FELV. At the time of writing we had three FIV positive cats in care, one of which has been re-homed and another with a possible home.

In the same article I mentioned the 17 cats taken in from two households. The five kittens which came in from the second household have now left for new homes after receiving a clean bill of health from our vet, being chipped and also having their first vaccination. The care of the cats from the second household was split between Stephanie and one of our other fosterers and all appeared to be well at first. The six older kittens were neutered, chipped and vaccinated with one being blood tested to check for FIV/FELV and we were pleased when this came back negative. One of the younger kittens however gave Stephanie grave concerns from the outset and sadly she had to be put to sleep on her second visit to the vets as she had meningitis. Mum, Guiness, had already been booked to be neutered and blood tested to rule out possible

problems with the kittens before this occurred but, unfortunately, her tests came back positive for FIV so she now needs a loving new “indoor home”. Although all the other kittens are very healthy and lively they will all need to be tested too. We know that one of the older kittens has tested negative Sykes, nice gentle little boy, one but need to check the others too so of our older kittens looking for that if their tests are positive they a loving home are re-homed as indoor cats. The same applies to the four younger kittens although they will have to wait until they are 12 weeks old before testing.

This is the first time we have had a FIV positive mum in care and a new and expensive experience for us. Our veterinary department notes and guidelines indicate that on average just one third of a litter will test positive so we are hopeful that the results for the older kittens all come back negative, if mum was infected prior to having the last litter, and that very few if any of the remaining young kittens test positive.

OPEN Afternoon

If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give a call Stephanie on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.cats.org.uk/northwalsham for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

On 15th March we will be holding an OPEN AFTERNOON at our new surgery at Weybourne Road in Sheringham. Between 2 pm and 4 pm you have a chance to look behind the scenes at the Operating Theatre, Digital X-ray suite and our in house Laboratory. There will be a chance to look round Hector the whole premises, including the separate cat and dog wards, isolation unit and even see some of the equipment in action.

Footsie

You can also have a chat with the vets, nurses & receptionists over a cup of tea and a piece of cake.

Don’t forget to claim your free gift when you visit.

Local photographer Andy Langley will be at the surgery on the day taking pet portrait photographs.

If however you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher).

Ginger Cat Mess

Would the owner of the ginger cat, who I believe lives in Morris Street, please train it to do its toilet on a litter tray indoors.

It comes into my garden and BBQ area and leaves urine, which leaves the place smelling awful, diarrhoea and vomit in the said areas. Perhaps the cat is ill?? My grandchildren always seem to find it and then bring it indoors on their shoes.

It's not good when it leaves diarrhoea on the wooden floor of the BBQ area as it is not easy to get it out of the groves in the wood.

Lucy the Beagle

We look forward to seeing you, feel free to bring the dog!

I am also allergic to cats and when I go through the BBQ to hang out washing I have runny eyes and I'm sneezing and coughing the rest of the day.

Perhaps you would please make yourself known to me and we could discuss cleaning arrangements as we are now at the end of our tether. Marie Johnston, 11 West Cliff, Sheringham

Toby says goodbye to all his friends in Cliff Road, Beach Road and elsewhere in Sheringham.

Dear Margaret,

It was reported at a recent meeting to the Cromer and North Norfolk Festival of Music, Dance and Speech that nearly 400 individual entries and 19 group entries had been received for the Dance Festival to be held at The Auden Theatre, Holt from 11 to 13 April, entries for which have closed.Anyone interested in the Music and Speech sections should contact Mrs Liz Whitehouse on 01354 279124 – the closing date is 28 February. The Festival does require volunteers and anyone willing to help should phone Mrs Liz Whitehouse on the above telephone number. Yours sincerely, Yvonne Nolan

Dear Margaret,

In The Sheringham Independent issue 382 you kindly printed a rather hastily put together letter of mine in which, amongst other things, I talked about the possibility of democratically transforming the current troubled state of affairs into one which is more stable and socially just. Given the limited but understandable worldview within which most people conduct their lives at the moment, I must admit I was not expecting much of a response. (At present I am simply casting around some seeds of vision and imagination for the creation of a happier and more secure world!) But the reaction of your readers left even me flabbergasted and perplexed. While there were no replies, either formally or informally, to the above suggestion, the following editions of SI contained letter after letter attacking somebody who had written in to say, in the same issue, that she was pleased Tesco had opened a store in Sheringham but was disappointed that she could not buy a cup of Costa Coffee in this area! Leaving aside for the moment any questions concerning the genuineness of this correspondent, I am deeply concerned that recipients of your worthy magazine can be so easily distracted from the more important issues of the day, such as the harm and damage caused by huge corporations, the inroads being made into standards of living by so-called ‘austerity measures’, our lack of any real control over our lives and surroundings, etc., and the promotion of innovative ideas for dealing with these unhealthy and oppressive conditions. And now along comes one of those extreme weather events which have been blighting other parts of the world in increasing numbers but which recently took place on our own doorstep, i.e. the terrible storms and prolonged flooding which have occurred in this country and which, most scientific research says, is the product of man-made climate change. And so, in the light of these incidents, I am left wondering whether we, the inhabitants of this town (and the rest of society), are going to continue ignoring the faults and defects of the existing system which one day may well lead to its complete breakdown, and carry on with business as usual, including our own petty disputes and generally ineffective remonstrations. Or are we going to get together to look for, agree upon and then implement new and enlightened solutions which go to the root of these problems and not just wait for leaders and ruling elites, who have taken us to the edge of this abyss, to come up with their inevitably short term and inadequate answers? Yours sincerely Colin Millen, Campaign for Self-Government www.moreadvancedsociety.com 27, New Street, Sheringham

BEGINNERS PLEASE!

The Sheringham Players present an Evening of Short Plays Showcasing New Talent ‘Beginners Please’! is the traditional call heard backstage at theatres all over the world from the National in London to the tiniest of amateur dramatic companies held in the humble church hall.

It signals the imminent start of the play/opera/ pantomime and quickens the pulse of those who need to be on stage as the curtains open.

The Sheringham Players, who are privileged to perform at Sheringham Little Theatre have heard the same call to arms for almost 50

years. However on 21 and 22 March at Sheringham Little Theatre, this call will have another meaning.

The Sheringham Players have been recruiting new members in order to keep going strong for another 50 years. To showcase the new ‘beginners’ (both onstage and back) they are presenting something a little different. - a mix of short plays from 5 minutes to a full one act, ranging from sad through to downright silly - and from the pens of authors such as Harold Pinter and local favourite, David Tristram.

The whole evening will be compéred with short introductions to each play to set the scene.

The plays will include Score by Lyndon Brook, Night by Harold Pinter, Doggies by Jean McConnell and What’s for Pudding by David Tristram.

'Protect Our Coast' petition launched following Environment Agency warning

North Norfolk Labour Party has warned the government against "sacrificing" parts of North Norfolk to the sea as it launches its Protect Our Coast campaign and petition.

The local Labour Party has started the online petition following the news that the Environment Agency are considering protecting towns over villages - leaving areas like Cley, Salthouse, and Brancaster potentially without protection.

The petition also calls on people to call for more government investment in flood protection - after it was revealed spending on protection was being cut below the levels the previous government had budgeted for.

Last month it was revealed the Environment Agency was having to cut 1,500 jobs to deal with budget restraints. These workers could be key to alerting people to floods as well as helping to protect homes.

Denise Burke, Labour's Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for North Norfolk and who lives on the coast in Happisburgh, is concerned that this could lead to more communities being affected in the longer term if flood defences are not reinstated in marshes.

She said "We all will have heard recently the Environment Agency boss saying that funding cuts from government mean tough choices between protecting towns or protecting villages.

Friends of the Earth have pointed out that a small increase in funding recently announced for victims of the the Somerset flooding has been a knee-jerk reaction and is only a drop in the ocean of what we need to combat climate change and severe weather.

I fear proposals for Cley, Salthouse, and Brancaster are just the thin edge of the wedge - the marshes are first but where will be next? This is going to significantly hit villages, Free Help for Job Seekers communities, businesses, and Thursday Mornings 10.00am – 12Noon tourism. We cannot allow North At the Salvation Army Hall Norfolk to be sacrificed on the Cremer Street altar of government cuts. Sheringham

With the Environment Agency announcing that they will consult first we feel this petition could add real weight to any final decision, and we hope it will send a message to government too."
