Victorian Rocking Horse Displayed in Museum

Covering Sheringham, the Runtons, Holt and surrounding villages in association with the Cromer Times and North Walsham Times

The Sheringham Museum is pleased to announce a new exhibit on display for its 2014 re-opening this March – a Victorian Rocking Horse which has been used by thousands of Sheringham Primary School children over the last century.

Great money off vouchers and new competition inside Eco Friend

The horse has been given to the museum for safe keeping by Sheringham Community Primary School as its solid wood construction and size mean that it is now taking up too much space in the classrooms which often need to make space for group activities and class workshops at short notice – it can take up to four people to safely move it out of the way due to its immense weight and size!

Victorian Rocking Horse Displayed in Museum

Continued from front cover... The horse was purchased for Sheringham School children by the Upcher Family at some point during the late Victorian period. Exact records of when and for which of the original Sheringham Schools it was purchased for sadly no longer exist - these have been lost as the smaller town schools merged over the years to form the current large Sheringham Community Primary School. It is likely however that the horse was first used in ‘Upper Sheringham School’ which was founded in 1815 with financial help from the Upcher Family – the main landowning family of the town and original owners of Sheringham Hall in Sheringham Park.

The Rocking Horse is a rare ‘F H Ayres’ rocking horse – F H Ayres being one of the finest and most sought after rocking horse producers of the Victorian Period. His horses were often found in stores such as Harrods and in the playrooms of royalty. It is therefore no wonder that the Upchers selected this model for the Sheringham School children they helped to support. Further information about F H Ayres can be found here at www.ayres-rocking-horses.co.uk

The rocking horse has a real horse hair mane, leather saddle and authentic metal stirrups. Signs of wear and tear from the thousands of school children who have ridden it over the years can be seen on the wood and metal “safety frame” rocking mechanism and rein. Despite this it is in excellent condition for its age.

Museum Volunteer Mike Slipper remembers riding on the horse as a young boy in the 1930’s when he attended school in the town. He then went on to be a teacher in the town in the 1970’s and remembers it being used by pupils then also. Museum Trustee and Senior Teacher at Sheringham Primary School Tim Groves said: “It is fantastic to have a piece of Sheringham history enter the museum that so many of the people who grew up in the town will have actually ridden on at some point during their school days.”

The museum does not place a monetary value on its donated items as they are protected for the people of the town and are therefore priceless, however, similar rocking horses by F. H. Ayres have sold recently at auction for between £3,000 and £6,000.

Sheringham School groups enjoy free entry to the museum so the horse will still be accessible for them to enjoy over the coming years.

Rhodri Oliver wins ‘Young Councillor of the Year’ award

North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Corporate Assets, Democratic Services and Electoral Services, Rhodri Oliver, was named ‘Young Councillor of the Year’ at the annual Councillor Achievement Awards ceremony, held at Westminster City Hall in London on Tuesday 25 March. Judges at the annual achievement awards, organised by the LGiU and CCLA (Local Government Information Unit), awarded Councillor Oliver for ‘setting a fantastic example for young people in politics’. They went on to comment on how they were ‘impressed that Councillor Oliver has achieved a leadership position at a very young age’. North Norfolk District Council Leader, Tom FitzPatrick, said “I was delighted to be at Westminster City Hall to see Councillor Oliver receive his award as ‘Young Councillor of the Year’. He is a great example of how young people in Local Government can really make an impact and I believe his success will encourage many others to consider how they too can get involved in making a difference within their own communities. “He is the youngest deputy leader in the country, a position he achieved solely on merit and I regard him as a one of NNDC’s most valuable assets. “He makes a huge contribution as a member of the Cabinet and as a local Member for Sheringham South Ward. His work to gain funding for a skate park for Sheringham and to ensure improvement works were made to Sheringham Little Theatre has proved that he has a lot to offer residents of north Norfolk in what I hope will be a long and rewarding career in politics. Councillor Oliver became the youngest deputy leader in the country at the age 22 in January 2013.

Kelling Probus Club

Well-known local historian Barbara Miller joined Members for lunch at The Dales before speaking on Victorian Norwich. Barbara told us of the poverty and overcrowded living conditions within the City walls. Sanitation was terrible. Domestic wells contaminated by sewerage and the public water supply unfit to drink were responsible for outbreaks of typhoid and cholera that were common. Those who could afford to moved out into the suburbs and the houses they vacated were divided into apartments vertically. Each then had an attic large enough to instal a loom. This enabled linen to be produced by workers at home. Horse-drawn buses were the only form of public transport from the 1840s until trams were introduced in 1899 and this transport enabled workers to travel to work in factories and business that then located away from the crowded City Centre. Some buildings had to be demolished to enable roads to be modified, as the trams could not turn the sharp corners on some of the proposed routes. Barbara’s talk was illustrated with a remarkable collection of early Victorian photographs, black and white of course, showing some of these road modifications round well-known landmarks such as The Maid’s Head. The trams were finally replaced in 1947. Pictures showed two factories in Elm Hill and Jewsons in Colegate whose supplies were delivered by wherry. There were views of London Road showing it to be one of the first pedestrian streets in the Country and an umbrella shop, Bushells, where you have had your umbrella repaired, recovered or fitted with a new ferrule! After several questions from members Bruce Bedwell thanked Barbara for a most interesting talk. We will now walk Norwich with greater interest. The next meeting at The Dales is the Kelling Probus AGM on 20 March. In association with www.sheringhamdeals.co.uk

Sheringham Independent 387 March 15th 2014

An evening with Paul and Fiona Jones in Sheringham

Pop star Paul Jones and his actress wife Fiona Hendley will sing and share their stories and faith at Lighthouse in Sheringham on Saturday 29 March.

Paul's distinguished career includes being the award-winning lead singer of Manfred Mann (whose hits include "Do Wah Diddy" and "Pretty Flamingo"), and The Blues Band - he has recently worked on new albums with both groups. His collection of Gold discs includes one for the original "Evita". Millions listen to him on Radio 2, Jazz FM and elsewhere, and on TV he has hosted talk shows and performed everything from Shakespeare to soaps. His extensive stage credits range from the Royal National Theatre and the Royal Shakespeare

Company to the West End and Broadway.

Fiona, an accomplished actress and singer, has worked in all areas of show business from her acclaimed TV series "Widows" (for which she won Personality of the Year Award) to leading roles at the Royal National Theatre and the Royal Shakespeare Company. Fiona has starred in many West End productions including the highly praised and award-winning musical "City of Angels". She has sung on many show recordings and has a collection of gold discs that rival Paul's.

Together they have recorded several CDs celebrating the work of composers from Irving Berlin to Andrew Lloyd Webber. Their Gospel album "Personal" has been very well received: its songs express their love for their Heavenly Father, and for each other.

Gresham’s students exhibit at Saatchi Gallery

Two students who took A-Level Art at Gresham’s School in Holt last summer, have been given a unique opportunity to showcase their artwork within one of the world’s finest privately owned collections of contemporary art at the Saatchi Gallery in London this month.

The student’s artwork on display at the Saatchi Gallery with visiting Art students from Gresham’s

Claudia Erixon of Cley-Next-The-Sea and Jake Colman of Framingham Earl were delighted to hear that their sculptures would go on display in the Education room of the Saatchi Gallery.

The Gallery aims to provide an innovative forum for contemporary art, which draws up to 600,000 visitors per year, providing a springboard for young artists to help launch their careers.

Gresham’s Head of Art, Alistair Gray said, “This is a great achievement for Claudia and Jake to have their work recognised at one of the most prestigious galleries in the world and to get the opportunity to showcase their work is a fantastic opportunity”.

Paul and Fiona's testimony is humorous, but compassionate. Their story tells how each of them found true happiness and real faith. As they tell of their experiences,

they sing songs from their album, and the Gospel message is clearly explained.

The event starts at 7.30pm on Saturday 29 March and is at Lighthouse Community Church, 62 Cromer Road, Sheringham, NR26 8RT. Doors will open at 6.45pm, when Lighthouse Café will be open offering fine coffees and teas

Admission is £6 per person, including refreshments afterwards.

Tickets are available from Lighthouse, which is open from 10.30am to 1.30pm from Tuesday to Saturday, or e-mail office@lighthousesheringham.org. For more information, phone 01263 825155.

For the pea puree, boil fresh garden peas for approx 3-4 mins until soft.

Strain and blanche the peas under iced water to instantly put an end to their suffering.. place peas into food processer, seasoning to taste, sqeeze of lemon, and orange zest. And puree to a smooth paste.

on a tray, with another tray on top, then add a weight of some kind (ie cast iron skillet pan) and bake for 1015 mins on gas mark 7 until the bacon is golden brown and crisp. The weight is used to keep bacon as flat and thin as possible so, when cool, it looks like shard of glass. With a hot pan, sear your scallops (I get mine from Davies fish merchant in Cromer) for approximately two mins (dependent on size) on both sides. We tend to use cold pressed rape seed oil from Crush Foods in our pans - the taste is fantastic and most importantly it comes from Norfolk. At the same time gently heat the pea puree until nicely hot.

SHERINGHAM & DISTRICT FLOWER CLUB

We held our Annual General Meeting in the first week of February and the single most important item on the Agenda was the future of our Club.

Sadly, despite valiant efforts to find a way round the problems, due mainly to the lack

of Officers and Committee members, it was decided by a majority vote that the Club should close. In accordance with our Constitution, the decision was then taken to divide remaining Club funds between five local charities, and these monies will be distributed evenly once the final accounts have been settled. The Club was proud to celebrate its 40th Anniversary recently, and to think back on fundraising events over the years such as cream teas, stalls at the Carnival, soup lunches, jumble sales etc. Over the years our members have created some beautiful arrangements for both local church and Norwich

Present on the plate with a nice spoonful of puree, two nicely cooked scallops, two pieces of bacon, a few mixed herbs washed, and a drizzle of rape seed oil for an absolutely scrummy supper @thegrovecharlie.

Do come in and see us for dinner – or of course Mother’s Day on 30th March. As always 01263512412 to book!

THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER WILLOWS

Trees and shrubs contribute in so many ways to the quality of a garden. They provide shelter, contrasting shapes and foliage patterns, beauty of flower, attractive twig tracery or colourful bark to cheer the winter landscape. Above all in comparative gardening terms they are less labour intensive and easy to look after. Trees and shrubs are available in such widely varying shapes, sizes and colour of flower, foliage or stem that there is something available for even the smallest garden.

One interesting group is the willows (Salix) and while the largest, the weeping willow, is widely cursed as being totally unsuitable for the average garden there are many other varieties to consider from a genus of approximately 300 species of normally deciduous trees and shrubs

found in habitats ranging from lowland meadows and riverbanks to sand dunes and mountain screes worldwide, except for Australia.

The willows have simple leaves and bear very small flowers in usually erect catkins, before or with the foliage. Of diverse forms willows are cultivated for their habit, catkins (of which the males are usually the most striking), foliage and, sometimes, brightly coloured winter shoots. It is therefore possible to avoid the dreaded weeping willow and grow smaller specimen trees, shrubby willows in a border and dwarf willows in a rock garden or trough.

From the many varieties available from garden centres the following are worth considering Salix caprea ‘Kilmarnock’ A small pendulous tree with a dense head of stout yellow-brown shoots and with leaves that are dark green above and grey below. Grey male catkins, 3cm long, with yellow anthers are produced in the late winter or early spring. Plants are normally grafted which can affect the final height, but they normally grow to about six feet.

Salix reticulate Dwarf, prostrate shrub with rooting stems bearing rounded ovate, glossy, dark green leaves, conspicuously veined above, white-hairy beneath. In spring it bears slender yellow

Sciraham Viking Festival

The Viking festival in Sheringham last month was enjoyed by hundreds of locals and visitors to the town.

The weekend provided battle re-enactments and drama and activities also included sword and shield-making workshops, Viking theatre groups,

catkins with pink tips. Suitable for the rockery as it only grows to a height of 12 inches.

Commonly found growing in the wild the Osier (Salix viminalis) is a fast growing shrub, especially when coppiced, with long leaves and straight shoots which turn a shiny yellowbrown when mature. It grows in fens, ditches and damp places throughout lowland Britain, but has also been widely planted in osier-beds to be harvested for basket making. More than 60 osier species, hybrids and cultivated varieties are grown in Britain with different growth rates and flexibility, and in colours ranging from pale yellow to deep purple.

As well as basket making ‘wicker-work’, is going through a renaissance at present and willow is appearing in many situations. Some are being woven whilst still alive, with their ends stuck in the ground to form living fences or tunnels. Some sculptors are using osiers to make garden statues and there is a revival of willow stripping ceremonies across the country.

On Thursday, 20 March there will be a talk to the Sheringham Horticultural Society by a local expert on ‘Working with Willow’ and all are welcome. The meeting will be held in the St Josephs Parish Centre commencing at 7.30. Free to members with an entry fee of £2 for visitors. Bob Wilkinson

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Firstly, we would like to give an update on the cats and kittens mentioned in our last article. The six older kittens have now all been blood tested for FIV and FELV and we were delighted when the tests came back with a negative result. These six lovely cats are now available for adoption and when they leave for their new homes their new owners will be advised of their family history. Mum, Guiness, is now available for adoption but only to an “indoor” home, as previously advised. The four younger kittens have now had their first vaccination but cannot be blood tested until the 2nd one is due. Because they will have antibodies in their blood as a consequence of feeding from Guiness the usual blood tests will not give a true reading as to whether they have FIV or not. They therefore need a different test which will give a true picture as to whether or not they have FIV or just the antibodies. In the meantime Tubbs, Tufty, Pippin and Kato remain in good health, continue to grow and enjoy playing together. We will advise the outcome of their blood test in due course.

We have already re-homed over 40 cats and kittens this year and, as usual, their pens have soon been filled by cats from our website. Two of the cats, Billy and Betty, joined us because they had been abandoned by their previous owners and were living in a cupboard in the foyer of the flats where they previously had a home. Fortunately the caretaker of the flats was a cat lover and continued to feed them until we were able to take them in. Although only about two years old we were immediately concerned at the condition of one of Billy’s eyes. An initial visit to the vets indicates that this could be glaucoma and may require an operation. Billy will be going to see David for a final decision and we will let you know how he got on once a decision has been made.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give a call Stephanie on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.cats.org.uk/northwalsham for a description and photographs

Springtime Safety Tips with Animal Magic Dog Club

Despite the wet weather the springtime plants are starting to appear. Snowdrops are in bloom and even the Daffs are starting to poke their greenery above the surface. It’s a cruel trick of nature that some of the most beautiful, colorful springtime plants pose a deadly temptation to the four-legged members of your family. Taking a few simple precautions to avoid any plants known to be deadly to pets can prevent a potential tragedy for you and your family this spring.

Here are a few common plants to be aware of: Tulips and Hyacinths - Tulips contain allergenic Lactones. Lactones are derived from chemical compounds and taste a bit like Whiskey. Hyacinths contain similar compounds. It’s the bulbs of these two plants, not the leaves or flowers, which are toxic. There’s no antidote if your dog is poisoned by eating a Tulip or Hyacinth bulb, and severe symptoms need immediate treatment.

Daffodils - If your pet licks or eats any part of a daffodil – the bulb, plant or flower – they will ingest an alkaloid called Lycorine which can irritate the tissues of the mouth and throat and cause excessive drooling. Lycorine can also trigger a gastrointestinal response like vomiting, abdominal pain or diarrhea. In more serious cases, heart and respiratory problems can occur. Severe symptoms such as these require immediate attention by a vet.

Crocuses - The variety of crocus plants that blooms in the spring is a member of the Iridaceae family. Spring crocuses can cause gastrointestinal upset in your pet, typically vomiting and diarrhea.

Lily of the Valley - The substance in Lily of the Valley that is toxic to your pet is called cardiac glycosides. If you think your dog has ingested a Lily of the Valley, you should get him to your vet for a checkup asap. If you are concerned about your dog’s health at any time please seek veterinary advice.

Animal Magic Dog Club based in North Walsham & Norwich offers a wide range of training for puppies, junior and adult dogs. For more information on the club and classes available please call Kathy on 01263 720730 or visit our web site www.animal-magix.co.uk

Can You Help Re-home Fraggle?

"Fraggle is an adorable Heinz 57 puppy, with a touch of Lurcher in him. He is approximately five months old and came into our care, at the West Norfolk RSPCA Rehoming Centre, at the beginning of February 2014.

We absolutely pray that featuring Fraggle in the Sheringham Independent will find him a loving, forever home and we look forward to hearing from you all please!

He had been cruelly abandoned by his owners in freezing cold and very wet conditions, poor boy.

Sheringham Evening WI Report

Our last meeting saw us thoroughly agog at the achievements of local photographer Olive Edis in what was a superb talk led by Alistair Murphy of Cromer Museum. Not only was she a lady ahead of her time working in situations unusual for a woman of her generation but she obviously was a woman of great compassion and able to relate easily to people of all social standings. This is seen by the relaxed and thoughtful photographs she took, of local fishermen and future kings of England. Her work also stands as an excellent social history of the local area. Many of us were obviously aware of the Edwardian growth of Cromer and Sheringham and their reputation as lively holiday hotspots. However we were not aware as to how many wealthy and celebrities had them as their favourite holiday destinations and what a decadent lifestyle that existed

amongst these tourists. A talk not to be missed, if you have the chance to catch Alistair elsewhere.

Our business of the evening concerned Norfolk’s votes for our 2014 campaigns. Norfolk voted for a resolution which aims to promote families understanding of their families wishes with regard to organ donation. In order to try and prevent the unfortunate situation when a family member dies registered on the donation list and the family disregard their wishes as is often the case at the moment. The issues of Female Genital Mutilation, the shortage of acute hospital beds and the funding of women’s centres for women at risk of offending were all topics discussed for resolutions.

The date for our new craft club was organised and trips organised for the film buffs as well as several summer outings. As they have been so rapturously received we are also continuing with knitting our blankets for Aid Africa in

Shannock Court find Shellika!

Not content with just knitting Oddball Cedric, the ladies and gents of Shannock Court have come up with another novel idea for this year’s carnival…

This year’s competition for the Sheringham Carnival is to design a creature from the Great Norfolk chalky reef which will then be displayed in the MO museum for judging.

The reef, discovered by divers in 2010, stretches for more than 20 miles and is home to some rare anemones, slugs and sponges as featured on Inside Out 25 February with David Whiteley and Rob Spray and is said to be the longest chalky reef in the world.

Shannock Court residents in Sheringham paddled out to take a look and not only found a Smiling Tompot Blenney but a wonderful mermaid named Shellika.

Knitted in an array of colours, it is hoped she stands a chance in the competition and she will be displayed in the Mo museum in July.

Further details of the competition can be obtained from the carnival website or from paulapopham@aol.com

Winter Notes from the Commons

How the British seasons vary! This time last year we were still shivering through the long snowy winter and cold spring and yet this year it has been relatively mild and very wet.

In early December (3rd) a large number of small white discs were noted on fallen Ash leaves and as they were unusual some were passed to Tony Leech (Norfolk Fungus Recorder) as they resembled a Discomycete fungus. After a few days Tony came back and said they were fungal sclerotia. These sclerotia are the fungal equivalent of a bulb ie a storage structure to enable the fungus to over-winter. Knowing what the discs were did not, however, identify the fungus, also the discs had now turned from white to brown. Anne Edwards, a microbiologist at the John Innes Centre was sent some discs by Tony and she agreed to DNA sequence them as they were found on Ash leaves and she was involved with research into Ash Die-back disease. The result was quite surprising as the fungus turned out to be small spindle fungus (Typula ph), which arises from the soil in late spring.

Birds, apart from resident species were fairly absent during the winter period as no hard weather had set in to drive species to the coast. A Water Rail was present (9th Dec) and two Fieldfares also flew over the Common. A Woodcock was flushed from the marsh (11th Dec) and Tony doing some further investigation on the spindle fungus found a Sessile Earth-star, one of a group of fungi that has a characteristic basal star-like form. Pink-footed Geese, almost daily passed overhead, generally in an eastern direction in the morning and a westerly direction in the evening. Not as predictable was the discovery of a Slow-worm (15th Dec). Either the mild weather had brought it out or its hibernation had been interrupted by flooding. Another surprise was a male Pheasant with a flock of about 20 females in the Back Bog (20th Dec).

Yellow Brain Fungus

Mark Clements also found a Slow-worm out in the New Year (3rd Jan). January is fairly bleak but nature does add splashes of colour and a distinctive orange fungus is noted (6th Jan), which is known as Yellow Brain Fungus, on the account of its convoluted appearance. It is very common on old Gorse stalks. Another flash of orange to catch the eye (18th Jan) was a male Firecrest observed hunting for insects in an ivy-covered tree. Firecrests (and Goldcrests) are generally winter visitors, however, in recent years the Holt-Cromer ridge area has

become a stronghold for a breeding population. While meeting with Natural England contractors on the Common (23rd Jan) an Otter was found dead by Russell Cox. It has often been suspected that Otters might use the Common as a corridor to feeding areas, in fact a few years ago some residents in Beeston Regis and Sheringham that have properties close to the Common found their fishponds had been raided. It is also possible that the animal was displaced from the freshwater marshes at Cley and Salthouse that were overrun by the North Sea Surge in December. The Environment Agency was contacted and the Otter was removed by them to undergo investigation into its death.

Common Frog and Spawn

In February the Natural England contractors arrived and cleared much of the straggly gorse from the northwest corner of the SSSI and the scrub from the north-facing slope of Pill-box Hill. This work, which involved some large tracked vehicles, has created deep ruts in the main track, which were exacerbated by the very wet weather. Some restoration work will be required, however, such work will need to be done REE when conditions are drier to be effective.

Small Tortoiseshell

and two Oystercatchers were the highlights (10th Dec). Two Tawny Owls took up residence in an ivy-covered tree (13th Feb) and also seen were Great-spotted and Green Woodpeckers and a Stock Dove. One Tawny Owl was still present (25th Feb) and two Redwings were noted flying west also Roy Dykes reported seeing three Small Tortoiseshells on Sheringham Common. The following day (26th Feb) a Kingfisher was at the Newt Pond and Mark also recorded Common Frogs and spawn. This is a more typical date for the frogspawn – the cold spring last year delayed the event until 13th March. A Small Tortoiseshell was also noted. The two Tawny Owls were again in the tree (27th Feb) and Marsh and Cole Tits were also observed by Mark, as was a Muntjac.

As I mentioned at the beginning, the British climate is nothing but variable and therefore challenging to wildlife. Spring was about a month late in 2013 and this year signs are that it is 2-3 weeks early. Let’s hope it becomes a drier and warmer spring than last year.

Francis Farrow, Hon. Warden www.beestoncommon.org.uk

THE FISHING BOAT

Overseas work took me away during most of February, however, Mark and others were out and about recording the wildlife. First spotted by Mark was a Mediterranean Gull heading north (4th Feb) and a Grey Wagtail, Treecreeper and Muntjac. Mark also recorded both Firecrest and Goldcrest (5th Feb) as well as a Meadow Pipit passing over. A Tawny Owl, two Red-legged Partridges, a Skylark

Local MP calls on constituents to look after their eyesight by having regular eye tests

North Norfolk MP and current Minister of State for Care Services, Norman Lamb MP, visited Roger Lee Opticians in Sheringham on 19th February to find out why regular eye tests and eye care are so important in preventing blindness.

1.8 million people in the UK are living with sight loss and this figure is set to increase by 115% to nearly 4 million people by 2050, largely due to the ageing population (1). Much of this is preventable through the early detection and treatment of eye problems. Regular eye tests are a simple and practical way to maintain good eye health and look after your eyes.

Practice owner and representative of Norfolk and Waveney Local Optical Committee, Roger Lee, explained the health benefits of regular eye tests:

Commenting on his visit, Norman Lamb said: “I was interested to see the essential work Roger Lee Opticians do for the people of Sheringham. It is crucial that people are aware of the importance of regular eye tests. It is clear that regular testing is the best way to maintain healthy vision. In particular, catching long term eye conditions early to enable prompt treatment is key to achieving the best outcomes with many conditions.”

North Norfolk Photographic Society - Annual Digital Competition

Each year, most Camera Clubs hold competitions to choose the best images for the year. On 19 February, North Norfolk Photographic Society held their Annual Competition for projected digital pictures.

The contest was judged by Brian Collins, who made the journey from Lowestoft where he is a member of the Phoenix Photographic Group. Brian judges photographic competitions throughout the East of England and beyond. Brian had the onerous task of commenting on all of more than 80 images, giving each a mark out of 10. He gave 7 of them ‘full marks’ and selected ‘Morning Catch’ by Paul Keates as the winner, a brilliantly caught photograph of a kingfisher with a newly caught fish. Second was ‘Teabag Lady’ by Hilary Tottman, and third ‘High Tea’ by Judy Knights. These and other images can be viewed on the Society’s website. An 18

amusing vote of thanks was proposed by Bill Day.

The Society meets on alternate Wednesday evenings at The Holt Community Centre.

Visitors are most welcome and further information can be found either from the website www.nnphotosoc.org, or from Secretary Judy Knights on 01263 825418.

No Longer a Women-only Club...

Laser and Cosmetic Treatments for Men A recent study at Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic has shown that a third of our patients are now men. We offer a range of medical treatments unlike a lot of purely cosmetic clinics.

Men can be just as concerned about their looks as women and how society views them. It has seemed the norm for a long time for men to accept that they cannot change things. Not anymore, the trend is that more men are coming for a variety of treatments and enjoying the benefits. Men want to remain youthful and often want to keep up with their partners (who are often the people who introduce them to these treatments or bring them along to appointments!)

Here at Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic we understand that men don’t want to give up their masculinity. Dr Gheyi helps to navigate patients through the numerous treatments we offer and to give you the look that you wish to achieve.

warts and verrucae removal • Unwanted hair on face, back, chest, legs etc. • Rosacea • Pigmentation/ broken veins on face • Thread and spider veins • Frown lines, crow’s feet and wrinkles • Ageing face, volume replacement, nose to mouth lines etc. • Age spots, sun spots and liver spots • Radiofrequency skin tightening • Ultrasound body contouring • Liposuction for face, neck, chin, jowls, man boobs, love handles and many body areas • Face and neck Lift • Hair loss treatments • Varicose veins Laser treatment.

If you are interested in finding out more about our treatments please log onto www.coltishallclinic.co.uk or call us on 0800 0430737 or 01603 736487.

The effects of ageing can be reversed and a new physique can be attained, which could not be achieved even with exercise and a healthy diet.

The most popular treatments among men are photo rejuvenation for conditions such as rosacea, thread veins on the face and pigmentation issues. Botox and filler treatments have also seen an increase in popularity. With the introduction of minimally invasive surgical treatments we see men having their varicose veins removed and having liposuction for body contouring. All our invasive treatments are performed purely under local anaesthesia on a walk-in walk-out basis so there is no worry about general anaesthesia and hospitalisation issues.

Here is a selection of our treatments for men...

• Acne or acne scarring [chemical peels, microdermabrasion, IPL, Lasers] • Fractional co2 laser resurfacing • Shaving bumps, moles,

Gifts Written by Miranda Marshall – Partner at Hayes + Storr Tel: 01263 837901

Full instructions are needed, together with certainty that the client fully understands the implications of their proposed transaction.

There may be more effective ways of achieving the same aim. For example, if someone wants to make sure a particular person inherits an asset, this may be better achieved by making a (new) Will.

If the intention of making the gift is to try to avoid tax, then all the tax implications need to be investigated and explained. There are several relevant taxes here: Capital Gains Tax (“CGT”), Inheritance Tax (“IHT”) and the Pre-Owned Assets Tax charge to Income Tax. There are complications if the donor retains a benefit in the asset after giving it away because of the Gifts with Reservation of Benefits rules for IHT. These can mean that there is both CGT to pay on the gifting of the assets and then IHT on their eventual death, even after

more than 7 years from the date of the gift. If someone is seeking relief from the worry or responsibility of owning an asset, granting a Lasting Power of Attorney to a family member may be a better way of dealing with that worry. If someone wants to avoid the value of the asset being taken into account for means-testing, such as for long-term care, then advice is needed as to the consequences of such a gift, including tax implications and the risk of Social Security in relation to ‘intentional deprivation of assets’. By this the person making the gift is treated as still owning the asset for the purposes of assessing their eligibility for State or Local Authority financial help towards the cost of care (whether at home or residential).

There are any number of other complicating factors, these include the following examples: where the client is infirm or disabled and an adult child has given up a paid job or chance of career advancement to provide full-time, live-in care in the expectation of

inheriting the home on their death; where the client is unable to afford the upkeep or pay for necessary improvements on their home and a child has been funding these in expectation of inheriting the property; where the home is a farmhouse without which the farm might not be able to function without; where the asset is in the client’s name but originally funded by their child.

A proper assessment of the implications of making a gift is best achieved by listing the pros and cons and thinking carefully about tax and future care costs. A later request to return a gift may fall on deaf-ears.

West End to East Coast Stars of the award-winning Hollywood blockbuster and hit West End versions of Les Misérables have been working with young people at Sheringham Little Theatre.

Killian Donnelly and Fra Fee ran a workshop at the coastal venue for the cast of the theatre’s own version of the famous musical.

The pair, who between them have tackled a range of roles in the stage show, and who worked with Hugh Jackman and Russell Crowe in the film, said they were enthused by the passion and dynamism of the young actors.

“We were both so impressed by the standard of the acting and singing and the dedication of the cast,” said Killian, who first started working with the venue when theatre director Debbie Thompson’s daughter Katie asked him via Twitter to write a pantomime for Sheringham. “To see children as young as this take on such complex roles was incredible.”

Killian, who is currently starring in West End version of The Commitments, and Fra, who is in Candide at the Menier Chocolate Factory, in London, have played a variety of parts in the stage musical of Les Misérables. Killian also

played Combeferre in the film while Fra was Courfeyrac.

Sheringham Little Theatre was given permission to produce the schools’ version of the musical and will stage its own production from Friday, April 11 to Saturday, April 19. Debbie said the workshop had been an overwhelming success and now everyone was looking forward to opening night.

The pair worked with the cast, who come from across Norfolk and are aged eight to 19 years-old, on their characterisation, voice projection and team work. They talked to them about their own experiences on stage and screen and aimed to instil confidence in each individual performer.

“We noticed the changes in all of them – even those with smaller parts, at the back of the group, were really passionate about what they were doing and really focused on responding to what we were saying,” said Fra.

“Not only was this a valuable experience for the cast of our show, who are currently rehearsing for this ambitious production, but it was also an incredible opportunity for those who might wish to go into the West End themselves one day.

And Killian added “We were both thrilled to see them all doing so well and really understanding and getting to grips with a story such as Les Misérables. They all put so much emotion into what they were doing.”

“We were very, very lucky to have Killian and Fra here with us and to have their input into what was already shaping up to be an excellent production.”

Based on the book by Victor Hugo, and with music by Claude-Michel Schönberg, the show is set against the backdrop of 19th century France. It tells the story of ex-convict Jean Valjean, who is hunted by ruthless policeman Javert, and who agrees to care for factory worker Fantine’s young daughter, Cosette.

* Les Misérables runs from Friday, April 11 to Saturday, April 19. For more information or to book tickets call 01263 822347 or visit www.sheringhamlittletheatre.com

Cut in claimant count shows Liberal Democrats are getting people back to work – Norman Lamb

The number of people claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance in North Norfolk has fallen by 313 people in the last year.

After the last election, there were 1,529 people claiming Jobseeker’s Allowance in North Norfolk, and there are now 1,187.

Norman Lamb said “This recovery would not be happening without the Liberal Democrats in Government. We have helped business create more than a million private sector jobs and now we are working to help create a million more. This is further proof our plan is working and we are successfully rebuilding a stronger economy, in a fairer society. I am not complacent about the future. I want us to have a strong economy in North Norfolk where everyone who wants to work is able to do so. The announcement last month shows that we have made very significant progress.”

Give blood for Mother’s Day this month

As Mother’s Day approaches, NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) is highlighting how donated blood is often used to help new mums and their babies.

Blood is vital for a wide variety of procedures in hospitals. One important, often urgent and life-saving way it is used, is for pregnant women or new mothers experiencing severe bleeds.

Premature babies often also need blood transfusions to replace the blood that is taken for testing as they struggle to make new blood cells in the first few weeks after birth.

Around 6% of blood used in hospitals is for maternity care so people from Suffolk are being urged to think about new mums and their babies around Mother’s Day and make a date to give blood.

NHS Blood and Transplant’s lead donor relations manager for the Anglia area, Derek Carr, said “In the run-up to Mother’s Day we would like people to think about not only their own mother but also the mothers and families they can help simply by giving blood.

“Here at NHS Blood and Transplant, we are regularly contacted by grateful young mothers who owe their lives to blood donors after receiving transfusions during childbirth. So rest assured, you really can make a difference and help to save a life simply by going along to a local session.”

Anyone aged between 17-65, weighing more than 50 kg (7st 12lbs) and in general good health could potentially start saving lives by becoming a blood donor. There is no upper age limit for donors who have donated in the last two years.

For more information, to find a local blood donation session and to book an appointment please call 0300 123 23 23 or visit www.blood.co.uk

An Appeal from Sheringham & Cromer Lions Club

The Sheringham & Cromer Lions are appealing for help on behalf of the victims of the devastating flooding that hit Walcott, Bacton and Happisbugh in December 2013.

The Walcott, Bacton & Happisbugh Communities Flood Relief Group have organised support to help families who are unable to get back into their homes but there is still much more to be done and this costs time and money. If you can help by donating money please send cheques to Lion Brian Harris, 22 Hannah Close, Sheringham NR268AY. Cheques should be made payable to Sheringham & Cromer Lions Club (Fundraising Account) and please write Floods Appeal on the reverse side. All donations large or small would be gratefully accepted. For more information or offers of help please telephone 01263 821276 or email brihaz@btinternet.com

One house was completely lost in Happisbugh and at least 100 homes and 12 businesses in Walcott and Bacton were badly affected by flood damage and the high winds that battered our coast at this time. Flood water surged one and a half mile in land. The amount of work that still needs to be done is huge. There have been a few homes repaired but of those that have been damaged the householder will not be able to return home before Christmas this year. Some residents today are still without running water and electricity.

Thanking you in anticipation for your support.

minutes to a full one act, ranging from sad through to downright silly - and from the pens of authors such as Harold Pinter and local favourite, David Tristram. The whole evening will be compéred with short introductions to each play to set the scene. The plays will include Score by Lyndon Brook, Night by Harold Pinter, Doggies by Jean McConnell and What’s for Pudding by David Tristram. The Sheringham Players will present ten plays each evening and of course members of the audience can take full advantage of the beautifully refurbished Hub Bar and Café. Please go along on 21 or 22 March and be in at the ‘beginning’ of the next 50 years of The Sheringham Players.

‘Beginners Please’! is the traditional call heard backstage at theatres all over the world from the National in London to the tiniest of amateur dramatic companies held in the humble church hall. It signals the imminent start of the play/opera/ pantomime and quickens the pulse of those who need to be on stage as the curtains open. The Sheringham Players, who are privileged to perform at Sheringham Little Theatre have heard the same call to arms for almost 50 years. However on 21 and 22 March at Sheringham Little Theatre, this call will have another meaning. The Sheringham Players have been recruiting new members in order to keep going strong for another 50 years. To showcase the new ‘beginners’ (both onstage and back) they are presenting something a little different. - a mix of short plays from 5

for my clients where we can explore and challenge difficulties by communicating openly in a safe, confidential and nonjudgmental environment”.

Based upon her own life experiences, Julia is acutely aware of the importance of one-to-one talking therapies in assisting those who have experienced emotional and physical difficulties, which often arise from the pressures experienced in today’s modern society. Julia treats clients with a wide range of emotional and physical issues such as weight loss, pain management, depression, stress, anxiety, bereavement, bullying and low self-esteem.

Julia offers all clients a free consultation at their initial appointment, saying “I appreciate

Norman Lamb: “New railcard will provide important travel boost for couples in North Norfolk”

North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb has welcomed the launch of a new national railcard aimed at couples travelling together.

The Two Together Railcard is being launched by Britain’s train companies and is the first new national Railcard in 30 years.

Pairs of adults travelling together by train can use the card to save a third off the cost of their journey. The card is designed to fill a gap in the existing family of Railcards which give many passengers discounts on their journeys. Last

year over 116 million journeys were made nationally by Railcard holders who on average saved £148 over the course of the year.

The card will cost £30 a year for two named people travelling together and savings will be available for travel throughout Britain in both Standard and First Class.

Commenting, Norman Lamb said “This Government is committed to tackling the cost of living. Liberal Democrats fought to stop any above-inflation rise in rail fares this year, and this new railcard will reduce fares by a third for couples who regularly travel together.

There are already railcards for 16-25s and families – this fills an important gap by helping older couples, or those without children.”

Transport Secretary Patrick McLoughlin MP said “Over the next five years, passengers will benefit from investment of more than £38 billion in our railways, which will mean faster, more reliable journeys to hundreds of destinations across the UK. Thanks to this innovative product, even more passengers can make the most of the many benefits of travelling by train.”

Norman Lamb “honoured that I will have the opportunity to fight for five more years of standing up for local people”

“On Friday evening at a meeting in Cromer I was re-selected by North Norfolk Liberal Democrats to stand again as their candidate at the next general election.

“It has been a privilege to represent North Norfolk for over 12 years, and I am honoured that I will have the opportunity to fight for 5 more years of standing up for local people.

“I couldn’t do the work I do in Westminster, standing up for North Norfolk, without the amazing team of volunteers across our area who help my campaign throughout the year. Their work is enormously appreciated. Lib Dem membership in North Norfolk has increased by almost a fifth since the end of last year – it is fantastic to have such support from local people.

“I am asking people in North Norfolk to let me know what our campaigning priorities should be for 2015 to help me represent them effectively. Everyone can have their say by visiting my website.”

The announcement last month shows that we have made very significant progress.” Sheringham Independent 387 March 15th 2014

Norman Lamb MP and Norfolk Lib Dem Councillors campaign to protect people from online scams

Norman Lamb is calling for action to tackle websites that are costing Norfolk residents hundreds of pounds by masquerading as official government websites.

Mr Lamb, Liberal Democrat MP for North Norfolk, has written to the Advertising Standards Agency and to Google asking for help in tackling the problem.

The Advertising Standards Agency has investigated the sites and has previously said they comply with the current rules. Mr Lamb feels this does not go far enough.

Commenting, Mr Lamb said “I have seen a number of cases where people have lost hundreds of pounds through these websites. They appear to be official government sites which allow you to pay for vehicle licence renewal or even to pay your income tax bill online. In fact they are charging a fee for doing

little more than forwarding the paperwork on to the proper agency. To many it feels like a scam.”

“I have written to Google to ask if they can help to tackle the problem. It may also be time to look at whether the rules need to be tightened to protect people from being scammed.”

In Norfolk, Liberal Democrat councillors recently welcomed a commitment to protect the Trading Standards Department at Norfolk County Council from some cuts that would have limited their ability to tackle online fraud and protect local residents.

Liberal Democrat County Councillor for Wells and County Group Leader Dr Marie Strong said “I was extremely pleased at the agreement to reduce the cuts to NCC’s Trading Standards 2014-15 Budget. This reduction will enable Trading Standards to continue safeguarding our vulnerable people and Norfolk’s legitimate businesses by continuing to check and test

“Mass market scams, for example letters and e-mails, cost British consumers over £3.5bn each year, equating to some £50m for the people of Norfolk. Victims suffer not just financially but it also affects the mental health and wellbeing of people as many are repeat victims.

“Trading Standards is working with known victims of scams to help them get out of the vicious circle. However anyone can be vulnerable to becoming a victim of a scam so awareness work is carried out to warn and inform the people of Norfolk.

“I believe the work of Trading Standards should receive more publicity: Trading Standards is an incredibly valuable Cinderella service. Many people benefit from its work but few know who they should thank.”
