Crowds attend Sheringham indoor beach outreach
The BeachLife Extra indoor beach party, run by Sheringham churches at half term, attracted crowds of children and young people.
The free event had a beach-party theme, but all took place indoors at Lighthouse on Cromer Road in the town, which is the home of Lighthouse Community Church. Around 180 children attended the afternoon event, with another 85 young people participating in the evening party.
Activities included a gladiator challenge, beach games, competitions, craft activities, ice creams, puppets, and giant inflatables. The soft play zone was also open through the afternoon. Both age groups were given the opportunity to “Taste and See” the goodness of the Lord, through fun presentations. Many of those who came wore beach gear!

Children at Kelling CE Primary celebrate World Book Day
Children arrived at school to find all the teachers dressed as pirates. The children themselves had each chosen their character for the day ranging from Mole from Wind in the Willows to Where’s Wally and The Gruffalo to Matilda. Prizes were awarded for the most thoughtful costumes.
Executive Headteacher Mary Dolan said “This World Book Day was the school's best ever - all the children and staff had a fantastic day and it was wonderful to see everyone working together to celebrate their love of books”.

Cromer and Sheringham host joint Probus meeting
“A huge success” was the verdict on our meeting on 4 March. Members from both Kelling and Holt Probus Clubs joined Cromer and Sheringham Probus Club for lunch and to hear a very entertaining talk by David Clayton, the Editor of BBC Radio Norfolk.
company during some lively debates over lunch and then we were privileged to enjoy a thoroughly entertaining and professional performance.
In proposing the vote of thanks, Ray Morgan was also able to provide some supplementary technical information, explaining that in the circumstances in which David’s father used to hit his car with a hammer, a broom-handle would have been a better choice.
A total of 56 diners enjoyed the excellent lunch and service provided by Jason Brown and the team at the Links Hotel in West Runton. The seating plan was arranged so that each member was seated next to at least one member of another club, so everyone met new people.
In conclusion, John Dunsire (Kelling chairman) proposed an impromptu vote of thanks to Dave Vickery for organising such an enjoyable event and said that he hoped there would be a repeat.
The next meeting on Tuesday 1 April will feature a talk entitled “Bogs and Baguettes” (The trials and tribulations of the single traveller) by Daniel Adams. Daniel is a very experienced international tour guide specialising in holidays for single travellers. There will be plenty of anecdotes to entertain but he is an expert in travel arrangements for mature and single people and a source of excellent advice.
The meeting was chaired by Dave Vickery (C&S), an apposite Grace was provided by Clive Mitchell (Kelling), Brian Bullock (C&S) proposed the loyal toast and the vote of thanks to the speaker was proposed by Ray Morgan (Holt).
Dave Vickery commenced the meeting by welcoming everybody, thanking the treasurers and secretaries who had dealt with the bookings and payments. Dave also thanked Forbes Pearson (Holt) for suggesting an event where clubs joined together and asked everyone to blame Forbes if things did not go well, rather than him!
David Clayton proved an inspired choice of speaker for the event. He was excellent

He started off on his topic “Cars of my Life”, moved into some amusing anecdotes from his career in broadcasting and then returned to an interactive discussion about cars that members have owned. It was clear to all that he was not using notes but nobody would have guessed that he had not prepared anything specifically for the occasion either!

Prospective members are welcome to come along as visitors to enjoy the meal, the talk and the company of Probus members. The club is open to gentlemen who are retired or nearly so.

North Norfolk Concert Band Returns to Sheringham! Conductor: Howard Rooke
If you enjoy Big Bands, Concert Bands etc you will certainly be in for a treat in St. Peter’s Sheringham on Friday 4 April at 7.30pm.
The band plays a wide variety of music, from seriously classical to arrangements of jazz classics, pop and film music. The programme for this concert will include music by Wagner, Benny Goodman, Kurt Weill and music from the Harry Potter films among others.
The Band was formed in the Autumn of 2009 when Howard Rooke - formerly Head of Music at Sheringham High School - placed an advertisement asking wind players to get in touch with the aim of forming a band. In the first place, about sixteen players came forward, and rehearsals duly began, first of all in Bodham Village Hall, and later, as the band grew, Gresham Village Hall – it got to be just too loud at Bodham! It now has a rapidly growing group of supporters- no wonder, when you hear them play!
New players are always welcome! Rehearsals are on Monday evenings at Gresham Village Hall, starting at 7.30pm. Contact: Howard Rooke – 01263 740993 or 07980 742850

North Norfolk Photographic Society In February, North Norfolk Photographic Society held their Annual Competition for projected digital pictures and on 5 March it was the turn for printed pictures.
The judge was Ray Kimberley, who travelled up from Cambridge (and back) for the evening. With an amusing, dry humour, Ray mentioned that some years ago he had been guitarist in a pop group. Ray Kimberley
Members provided over 80 photographs for the competition and all were commented upon and judged. Paul Keates - who had won the
projected image a few weeks earlier - won the competition and came second as well. ‘Morning Shower’ was the winner and is a lovely image of a swan in a shower of water drops, also reflected in the surface of the water.
Second was ‘After the Storm’, a moody image of sunlight coming through dark clouds across the Cley mudflats.
After the Storm
These and other images can be viewed on the Society’s website.
The vote of thanks was given by Bill Day in his polished style.
The Society meets on alternate Wednesday evenings at The Holt Community Centre. Visitors are most welcome and further Morning Shower information can be found either from the website www.nnphotosoc.org, or from Secretary Judy Knights on 01263 825418.
Norman Lamb: “for the first time a government is taking steps to address the historic underfunding of Norfolk’s education system”
North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb has welcomed the announcement by Liberal Democrat Schools Minister David Laws that Norfolk school will receive an extra £16 million next year. The Coalition Government inherited from Labour a fundamentally unfair system of school funding – which calculated school funding based on what schools had received before, not on their actual needs. Similar schools just miles apart can be funded at completely different levels because they happen to fall across Local Authority boundaries.
In last summer’s Spending Review, the Coalition announced it would consult on introducing a new, fairer way of allocating funding between schools. For the first time in a decade, funding will be allocated to local
areas on the basis of the actual characteristics of their pupils and schools, rather than simply on the basis of historic levels of spending.
Across the country, the Government will be delivering a £350m boost to schools in the areas that are currently least fairly funded. No Local Authority will receive a cut in its per pupil school budget, but about four in 10 areas will see an increase.
Commenting on the announcement, North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb said “It is fantastic that for the first time a government is taking steps to address the historic underfunding of Norfolk’s education system. This £16m increase in funding will help improve education across the county, giving every child a fair start in life.”

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
The four little kittens waiting to be blood tested continue to thrive and have now had their first vaccination. Three of them are completely black, although Kato, who is the largest and naughtiest little boy, is black and white. They are chunky little kittens with nice round faces; all are very mischievous, and are enjoying life, playing together. Meanwhile Billy, the little cat mentioned and pictured last time, has had his eye removed. David, his vet, advised us that the glaucoma had been caused by previous damage to the eye and although we will need to monitor his other eye for the time being, he believes he will not have any problems there. As Billy is a very affectionate little cat (his fosterer calls him her little cuddle bucket) we believe he will soon find a loving new home. Patsy, one of our kittens, has recently returned to our care as she was not getting on with the resident cats and suffered several bouts of cystitis which may have been related to this. A recent visit to the vets confirmed she had crystals in her bladder and she has been put on a special new food which, hopefully, will help resolve the problem. If, however, she
does not respond to the treatment she will need further investigations to get to the bottom of the situation. Frequent visits to the litter tray do not bother her and she is a very confident little kitten, who enjoys a cuddle, but only in the mornings. After that she is far too busy having a play to sit around on her fosterer’s knee. We will let you know how she is getting on, next time.
If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.cats.org.uk/northwalsham for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

Abandoned Snoopi finds friends at Animal Magic Dog Club
Little Snoopi hit the headlines when at just fourteen weeks old he found himself abandoned on a freezing cold January night in Downham Market.
Luckily a passer-by heard a whimper from his pet carrier which had been hidden in a hedge on a residential street. Whilst being contained in a carrier kept Snoopi safe from traffic this also meant that had he not been found, he
Lessons
could have caught hypothermia. The RSPCA suspects that Snoopi was an unwanted Christmas gift and sadly his story isn’t unique.
January is an incredibly busy time for those working in animal rescue. It is when people tire of their new pet and decide a lifelong commitment isn’t for them. Thankfully Snoopi’s tale has a happy ending. He’s found his forever home here in North Norfolk.

Luckily his new family were watching the evening news when his plight was reported upon and were straight on the phone to offer him a home. This cheeky chappie has settled in well, he loves to play with squeaky toys and stealing his owners’ socks!
Snoopi has found some new friends at Animal Magic Dog
Club where he was offered a place at puppy classes - he’s been off to visit our club photographer to pose for his picture to be taken too. Not all abandoned dogs are as lucky as Snoopi and members of Animal Magic work hard fundraising for local rehoming centres. You’ll find dogs and puppies of all ages, shapes and sizes looking for a home, so if you’re considering getting dog then please make a rehoming centre your first stop, you might just find your best friend waiting there for you.

Miramar Open Day
We held our first open afternoon on Saturday 15th March and were overwhelmed by the amount of people through the doors.
Having never held such an event we were unsure of the response, however we need not have worried. As soon as 2pm arrived people
flocked to the purpose built surgery to have a look behind the scenes. We had demonstrations of the ultrasound machine, digital X-ray processor and various critters to see under the microscope.

People had the opportunity to look in theatre and see how a spay operation would be performed, whilst in the prep room at the dental table a mock tooth extraction was under way with the children performing the extractions!
We had various associates in the spacious waiting rooms including Dave Brice our dog behaviourist, Homefinders grey hound rescue, NNCLT and Animal Magic with games and raffles, money raised by our tombola went to NNCLT at Beeston Regis.
We were delighted to see many of our regular clients
Sheringham Society Coffee Morning At the end of February we had a fascinating talk from Hilary Cox, a former Mayor of Cromer who spent 21 days trekking up to the base camp on Mount Everest. Base camp sounds like the bottom of something but this base camp is at 17,500 feet. They walked from eight in the morning until nightfall with just breaks for drinks and meals. The conditions were basic to say the least and no showers or baths were available for that time. To pay over ÂŁ2,000 for such a trip when you

Meet Naomi Brangwin - glass aritst - on April 5th
Following the very successful exhibition of Mary Randle and Lance Beeke during March, Naomi Brangwyn, glass artist will be exhibiting at The Gallery Norfolk from April 5th to 26th. You have the chance to meet Naomi on April 5th all day to discuss her work and techniques.
Every artist works in a medium, such as oils, watercolour, charcoal, stone or bronze. Naomi Brangwyn’s preferred medium is glass – stained glass. If those words suggest solemn church windows, then think again. Naomi’s pieces are lively, imaginative, a breath of fresh air – and perfectly scaled for a domestic setting.
Many of them evoke the landscapes and seascapes of East Anglia – she has lived in Suffolk since the 1980s, and on its coast since 2001. “Moving to a home by the sea was significant for both my life and for my artistic identity,” says Naomi. “It was a time for new beginnings – and one of those was my work with glass. Norfolk in particular inspires me with its unspoilt nature,” she continues. “It’s full of hidden secrets. You go round a corner in the road and a new view unfolds. The county’s vast skies dictate the mood as the light shifts in intensity and the
colours change ... energetic, calm or reflective.”
She does not, however, seek to portray specific locations: “It is more about using my imagination to capture an experience,” she says. “... A fun day on the beach with the warm sun and breeze on your cheeks, and lunch in the beach hut or a solitary walk with the sand between your toes."
“It’s fascinating to take something that moves and changes and to capture its spirit in something as still and delicate as a piece of glass,” she continues. “I never cease to be intrigued by the process of taking this hard, flat, brittle material and transforming it into sky or water, or something as soft and delicate as a field poppy.” Always exploring and always experimenting, Naomi uses traditional stained glass techniques, but produces art that is, as she says, “a unique combination of glass, lead and nature”.
Often, she will literally add an extra dimension by layering the glass – and by integrating pieces of decorative metal or found objects such as shells and pebbles. Engraving can also play a part. All this means that each of her pieces is different – this is art rather than design – and each is individually signed.
Naomi Brangwyn – Glass Artist 5th – 26th April 2014

The Gallery’s owner, Polly Miller, explains that: “This is our first exhibition with Naomi, though her work has become closely associated with The Gallery Norfolk. The pieces we have chosen draw inspiration from Norfolk and its scenery, which is very much in keeping with the gallery’s ethos. With prices ranging from £30 to £395, small-scale pieces will be on show beside some quite ambitious and spectacular works. The great thing is that each of them will be right for someone’s home and that they open up new possibilities for display ... Yes, you can hang them on a wall, but you can also make a feature of them in a window. In a sense they are made of light, and each one offers its own ever-changing play of colours, lines and textures, so they really do bring a space alive.”
Did You Miss the Mary Randle and Lance Beeke exhibition in March?
If you did, you will be delighted to know that their work is still available at the Gallery.
They are two local painters, both endlessly fascinated by the play of light.
For all their shared luminosity, the two artists inhabit different
environments. Mary’s vivid, almost tactile paintings of flowers evoke intimate and stylish interiors, while Lance, with his atmospherically shaded landscapes, favours the open air. An example of each of their evocative work is alongside - so pop down to the Gallery for a triple viewing.

Explosion of Youth Services in Rural North Norfolk
Four Youth Hubs, in Cromer, Mundesley, Sheringham and Stalham, have developed into thriving centres of positive activity, community involvement and emotional/ social development. The diverse range of activities that members have taken part in is remarkable and extensive: beach trips, theatre visits, campfire cooking, and IFS Motivational Defence sessions, intergenerational networking at Halsey House, conservation work with the Broads Authority;
advice and information on issues such as bullying and respect, relationships, sexual health, substance misuse, anger management and emotional wellbeing; consultations and collaborations with The Matthew Project (drugs and alcohol service), The Joy of Food, Smoke Free Norfolk, Community Sports, High Schools and local Police Services. Twelve young people from Stalham raised £200 for chosen charities, Macmillan and B-EAT.
“We make sure that all our activities are ‘youth-led’, so that we continue to meet the direct and expressed needs of the young people we work with,” says senior youth worker William Mills, who has been “immensely impressed by the passion and imagination of young people in North Norfolk, and their positive efforts to make a difference in their local community”.
Over the past year, MAP’s youth workers have made contact with over one hundred young people, aged 11-19, through the popular HUBs,
and through Life Zones at nearby High Schools; MAP expects the project to receive ongoing funding and continue expanding and developing.
Building on existing links within the community, the HUBs will increase their engagement through fundraising activities and social visits, attendance at the Cromer Carnival and other summer festivals, and inter-HUB projects and events. The groups will be twining with a school in Liberia, through email and Skype correspondence where young people will learn about each other’s communities, their similarities and differences.
If you, or a young person you know, are interested in attending one of the HuBs, or would like any further information, please contact William Mills on 07876 864281 or williammills@map.uk.net.

Dear Margaret,
My wife and I would like to thank all the kind people who helped us when I fell over in Cremers Drift on Wednesday 12 March.
I would especially like to thank Ken who took my wife Elsie to Cromer hospital where the paramedic had taken me for treatment, and also our kind neighbours who brought us both home once I had received some first aid. James Eldridge
Dear Margaret,
Often we hear of poor care for the elderly in residential and nursing homes – well here’s some positive comment!
Three years ago sadly we had to admit our 87 year old sister, Joan Thirtle, into a local residential care home due to dementia, namely the Dormie on Cliff Road in Sheringham, under the owner Roger Armoogum and his dedicated staff.
We wondered how things would work out with Joan used to being a fiercely independent person. Her working life was that of a highly competent cashier, also an accomplished musician.
Three years on her life has been a total revelation, happy and content in homely surroundings and caring staff.
Some months ago Joan ‘was caught’ entertaining residents on her beloved piano when David Whitely, BBC’s Inside Out presenter, called for content for his programme, ‘Care of the Elderly’. He was suitable impressed with the running and daily programme of entertainment within the home. Fast forward to 3 March this year when Joan celebrated her 90th birthday. The Dormie put on a superb tea for our family and staff. Joan had an absolute ball entertaining us all.
One question though – what do you give as a present to a 90 year old?
Janet and I came up with ‘a reflections album’ – photographs spanning 100 years of family images. This meant trawling through the best part of 500 prints. This categorised compilation – over 100 – was done and dusted in five days and this unique collection was presented to Joan who said ‘I am absolutely spellbound – thank you’.
Being a close knit family we do our level best to support aged loved ones in conjunction with the care home. Joan’s transition, though difficult at the outset, has proved to be successful and beneficial. In the knowledge that she is safe, secure and well cared for 24/7, peace of mind all round - so thanks Dormie House, on our behalf, please take a bow. Yours sincerely, Charles and Janet Thirtle

Sheringham Horticultural Society SPRING SHOW
As I write this column Spring has arrived with a rush and the daffodils, tulips and other spring trees, shrubs and flowers are putting on a wonderful display against bright blue skies. No doubt we will have some less favourable weather in the next few weeks but we are already worried that by the time our Spring Show is held on Friday, 11 April it may be difficult to find many flowers still in perfect condition.
Members are therefore asked to do their best to find something to enter from their gardens. The schedule which is being circulated will basically be the same as last year but there are two new classes which are not dependent on the weather – hot cross buns and Easter bonnets - so why not have a go. Full details will be in the schedule. Don’t forget that there will also be a talk on Sheringham Park whilst the judge is at work. The Society has again been invited to take part in the Sandringham Show and build a small coastal garden –any volunteers?
I hope that members enjoyed the first Spring Newsletter produced by Tony Chadwick.

JAZZ TEAM AT THE GOAT
We frequently bring you information about the Norfolk Dixieland Jazz Band and particularly about its activities at The Goat Inn, Skeyton. The band started about five years ago and quickly established itself as one of the best of its type in the region. Crucial to its popularity, of course, is the quality of the musicians and their feel for the music they play.
Equally important, however, has been the band’s relationship with the owners of the Goat Inn. The band sees the venue as its home-base and six dates were planned for 2014. The events in January and March were so well attended, however and the atmosphere so good, that there will now be an additional date on Sunday 6 April between the usual times of 1.30 p.m. and 4.30 p.m.
The picture shows the owners of the Goat, Jem (second from left), Jo and Judy (in the middle) with the guys in the band. A great team.
Spokesperson for the band, Vic. Brown, says “The Goat is a great place to play. You can just drop in for a drink or have a meal in the restaurant or the garden room where the band plays. In the summer everything moves into the garden. Admission is free and the aim of the owners and the band was to turn the venue into North Norfolk’s premier traditional jazz venue. We feel that the success has been due to the team approach between everybody at The Goat and the band”. Working together isn’t just a platitude at this venue.
In addition to 6 April, the band will be at The Goat on 1 June, 6 July, 3 August and 7 September. If you think about going along and would like lunch it is essential to book. Tel: 01692 538600.
Weather Summary
by Ned Nimbus
The past three months have turned out more or less as forecast although day and night temperatures have been higher mainly because the high pressure area has not been as far north as I thought it was going to be.
We still have a maritime climate regardless of this winter’s antics and the past three that were cold and often snowy. The change seems to be, and it has been for some time, that there are more occasions when the weather pattern get set for a few months with little variation. This winter was a good example of that when storm after storm came across from a cold North America and three large amounts of moisture at the south and west of Britain. Most storms turned north to the west of us so we were spared the main forces of these depressions. The one that did cross the north of Scotland did, however, have a major impact on our coastline but thereafter the very vast majority stayed out to the west bringing us a lot of southerly gales but much less in the way of rain than further west. Frost and snow were notable absentees.
The next three months will see more of a mix of weather but that does not rule out the rogue air mass turning up out of season and at this time of the year the power of the sun needs to be taken into account. Sheringham Independent 388 March 29th 2014
Top ambulance boss to address public meeting in Cromer
RANDALLS ELECTRICAL Shop at 7 Church Street, Cromer
The new Chief Executive of the East of England Ambulance Service Trust, Anthony Marsh, will address residents of North Norfolk about his plans for the health emergency service.
STOCKIST OF A WIDE RANGE OF
SHADES AND LIGHT BULBS OF ALL TYPES
Dr Marsh will be speaking at an Act on Ambulances campaign event and addressing the campaigners who fought for improvements when stories of poor response times were first highlighted more than two years ago. He will be the first Chief Executive to address members of the public since a number of damning reports from the Care Quality Commission were first issued over two years ago.

Anthony Marsh has joined the East of England Ambulance Service Trust (EEAST) on a part-time basis, also continuing to work with the ambulance trust in West Midlands. He was brought in after concerns over poor response times in the East - in particular rural areas like North Norfolk - and worries over savings within the service which had planned to reduce the ambulance fleet in the area.
HEADS AHEAD
The event will take place on Monday 14 April at 8pm in the Cromer Community Centre on Garden Street. Suggestions for questions can be submitted in advance to mail@actonambulances.co.uk and updated information about the event will be online at www.actonambulances.co.uk.

Denise Burke, an Act on Ambulances campaigner and Labour's prospective parliamentary candidate for North Norfolk, said "The Act on Ambulances campaign has been focusing on holding the ambulance trust and government health ministers to account over the failures within our local ambulance service.
20 Beech Avenue, Sunway Park Sheringham NR26 8NS
I am confident that Dr Marsh is the right man to bring in the improvements that are needed within the trust, and I hope this year is going to be a turning point for EEAST. It is vital they are as transparent as possible going forwards, so I am delighted to announce this event taking place in North Norfolk on 14 April.
01263 822838
This is a public meeting so members of the public are both invited and encouraged to join us to hear what Dr Marsh has to say, and also to put questions to the man in charge of our ambulance service."

At 18.32hrs a former crewman informed a member of the Sheringham Lifeboat crew that a kayak had capsized in the surf whilst trying to come ashore at the west beach in Sheringham. His colleague in a second kayak was advised to wait offshore for assistance by the Sheringham Lifeboat.

The swell had been building all afternoon and at HW at 19.03hrs the swell was running at about 1.5 metres and proved very difficult for the kayaks to ‘run’ ashore in the fading light. The canoeist and his kayak were taken on board the Lifeboat which returned safely to station.
Both men were checked by paramedics on scene and the person who had capsized was taken to hospital for observation and further checks.

FAIRTRADE FORTNIGHT
With the kind permission of Debbie and a very warm welcome from the staff in the Hub, we joined in with the Coffee Morning on 25 February. We spoke to many of the customers explaining that we are working towards Sheringham becoming a Fairtrade Town. The competition about tea and the raffle were popular, and £28 was raised for Fairtrade for Sheringham.
We took the Fairtrade Stall and a home-made Fairtrade Cake Stall to the Christian Aid Lent Lunch at St. Joseph's Hall on 5 March. Again we were publicising Fairtrade for Sheringham. The total for the cakes sold was £31.75.
On 7 March Brenda and a colleague Mary talked to the older children at Sheringham Primary School about Fairtrade. Mary explained how a banana is sold in our shops for about 20p. How much money would the person who grew the banana get for his months of care for the plant? 1p! Hard to believe. The children are taking part in a competition to find which Fairtrade products the Sheringham shops sell.
We'll be taking part in the Carnival on 3 August. Tricia Brooks and Brenda Smith Fairtrade for Sheringham Committee

Norman Lamb MP: new apprentices give a £1.5m boost to businesses in North Norfolk
Norman Lamb MP is calling for more local businesses to take on an apprentice, after new research revealed the extent of the benefits involved.
Every time a local company hires an apprentice, their bottom line gets an average boost of £2,009. This happens immediately, while the apprentice is being trained, and represents the benefit after typical wage and training costs for the East of England are deducted.
Last year, 740 people started an apprenticeship in North Norfolk. This means that new apprentices alone provided a local boost of around £1,487,000 in 2012/13.
The number of apprentices has been increasing rapidly. Despite this, surveys show that 60% of small businesses are missing out because they don’t know enough about how apprenticeships work. Many assume that they are difficult to administer and will involve a short-term cost.
The new research was commissioned by AAT, which has pioneered apprenticeships in accounting. Non-traditional areas like accounting now make up the majority of apprenticeships, demonstrating the huge expansion in the range and types available.
Commenting, Norman Lamb MP said “If they don’t have one already, every local business in North Norfolk should consider employing an apprentice.
“By giving young people a chance, this research shows that they will also be boosting their bottom line. The benefit here of £1.5m has made a real difference to the local economy, and that’s just from apprentices who began last year.
“Apprenticeship numbers have now doubled, with the Government making it a key priority. The Liberal Democrats are committed to building a stronger economy and a fairer society, in which everyone who wants it has access to high-quality vocational training.”
The Chief Executive of AAT, Jane Scott Paul, welcomed the news “I am delighted that Norman Lamb is encouraging more companies to employ an apprentice. Far from being a cost, apprentices bring benefits straight away.
“It’s really important that employers know there are apprenticeships for all shapes and sizes, including those in non-traditional sectors like accounting and law. That’s how apprentices boosted UK firms by £1.8 billion last year.”

New Multi-use Games Area Opens at Sheringham Sports Ground
A new all-weather Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA) was opened by Sheringham Mayor, Doug Smith, at Sheringham Recreation Ground on Saturday 15 March. The event was also attended by Rhodri Oliver, North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) Deputy Leader.
The flood-lit MUGA, which has been built on the site of three former underused and deteriorating concrete tennis courts, can be used for a wide range of sporting activities, including tennis, football, basketball, netball and hockey by all age groups all year round. The project has been directed by Sheringham Sports Association, who manage the Recreation Ground, which itself is leased from NNDC.
NNDC Deputy Leader Rhodri Oliver, one of NNDC’s two representatives on the Sports Association and Member for Sheringham South, said “I am delighted that after all our hard work and support the Sports Association has now been able to provide these excellent sports facilities for people in the town. So many volunteers have put in a huge amount of time and hard work into turning the original vision into reality and it is great that it has paid off. I would like to thank all the people who made this possible.”
The £113,000 project, which includes alterations to the pavilion to improve disabled access, has been assisted by a £15,000 grant from the NNDC Big Society Fund. A further £60,000 was secured by the District Council from Tesco in lieu of a like-for-like playing pitch which formed part of the original Tesco planning permission for the new Sheringham Community Centre. The District Council ring-fenced the funds for community use in Sheringham, passing responsibility for the final decision as to where the money would be best spent to the Town Council. The award to the Sports Association was made by Sheringham Town Council at its meeting on 12 March 2013.
Sport England then stepped in with match funding to complete the fundraising project and allow the building of the excellent facility for the town, followed by Scira Offshore Energy who funded the revamp of the existing floodlights to bring them right up to date. The Sports Association is also extremely grateful to Denny Construction, Michael Bacon (MB electrical), Priory Holdings, Weybourne, and SMG architects for their valued time, expertise and support in delivering the project in the most cost effective way.
Charles Sanders, Chairman of Sheringham Sports Association, said “I am very grateful to everyone who has helped make this new all-weather multi games facility possible. There are no facilities as good as these nearby and, at last, our young sportsmen and women can train and play in their own town. I hope this facility will also encourage more local people to participate in exercise and sporting activities. A lot of people have given a great deal of time and effort to make it possible and I am so pleased for them all that we have been able to make this new all-weather facility available to our whole community.”
March Steam Gala at NNR North Norfolk Railway’s March Steam Gala held over the weekend of 8/9 March was well attended and hailed a success despite the setback of the late withdrawal of Sir Nigel Gresley.
Congratulations …

Sheringham History Group
On 5 March Mr. David Starling waited patiently while we had a brief AGM meeting of the Sheringham History Group.
President’s XI 1984 Cricket Back row: J. Kennedy(umpire), D. Starling, R. Bushell, R. Pointen, R. Brewster, Dr. M. Taylor, J. Roberts,F. Duffield. Front row: C.Tiswell, A. Beasy, A. Lewis,(captain), N. Booty, D. Williams
Mr. Starling shared with us his personal collection of photographs and memorabilia, dates and information from 1898 to the present time. The talk was about Sport in Sheringham-"a forte all my life". Perhaps that may be the title of the book he has been asked to write. Mr. Starling participated in sport in Sheringham especially Cricket.

It is a fascinating history involving Upper Sheringham, the London gentry, the butchers and the bakers, ladies playing tennis in long dresses, teams repeatedly having to move to different pitches and a variety of sports in the local area.
The history of sport is closely related to the history and development of Sheringham, so again a book would make a valuable record of those times and people.
Gresham’s U13s smash through to Hockey Nationals
Gresham’s Prep School in North Norfolk has reached the national finals in two separate hockey competitions.
On 6 March the U13 team also competed in an East Schools tournament at Redbridge, beating The Perse School in the semi-finals 1-0 and Bedford 1-0 in the finals. The team now qualify for the National Schools Hockey Finals at Cannock on Friday 9th May.
Within a week, the U13 Boys’ Hockey Team won both the East IAPS (Independent Association of Prep Schools) and the East Schools Hockey tournaments in the U13 boys’ events.
Gresham’s Prep School entered the East IAPS at Bishop’s Stortford College in March where they competed against 18 independent schools beating Bedford in the semi-final on penalty flicks, and Old Buckenham Hall by 1-0 in the finals to become East Regional Champions.
Reaching the finals in both tournaments is a tremendous achievement. Head of Hockey at Gresham’s Prep School, Mark Buckingham, said “This is a fantastic achievement for the U13 team, both events are highly competitive and involve independent schools across the East of England. The team have worked very hard and truly deserve this success.”
