Join in the Easter fun at The Patch

Covering Sheringham, the Runtons, Holt and surrounding villages in association with the Cromer Times and North Walsham Times

The main event of the day will be an Easter Egg Hunt, open to children of all ages and will cost £2 per child. The Patch has plenty of hidey-holes and nooks and crannies, where the Easter chicks and bunnies can hide the eggs, making it exciting for both very young and more sophisticated ‘hunters'.

Children can also enjoy colouring and egg-painting competitions, while The Patch is providing a themed raffle and a plant sale for the adults. Refreshments will be available, and all paying children will leave with a selection of Easter treats.

Matthew Smith, Director of The Patch and Business Manager of Sheringham Woodfields School says "While the children are hunting

for the eggs, there will be an opportunity to explore to see just what we are doing, and how The Patch is developing. The growing season is just beginning, so there will be a lot to see both outside and in the polytunnels. And why not ask for information about sponsoring one of our hens while you're here."

He goes on to say "Everyone is welcome to come along and join in the fun. All proceeds will go towards sustaining activities at The Patch, which provides so much benefit to the pupils at Woodfields, Sheringham Primary School and Sheringham High School."

The Patch is located on the site of Sheringham High and Sheringham Woodfields Schools.

KELLING PROBUS CLUB

The Club held its Annual General Meeting on Thursday 20 March at The Dales Hotel, Upper Sheringham. Chairman John Dunsire called for a one-minute silence in honour Alan Mealing who sadly passed away on Saturday 15 March. He then welcomed a new member, John Whittington, and thanked Terry Penrose for standing in as Club Secretary.

Members received the Secretary’s, the Treasurer’s and the Chairman’s Reports which were duly approved and accepted by show of hands. The Chairman noted that after many years of service, Kevin Clingo wished to retire from the post of Hon. Treasurer and that a replacement was needed urgently: all members were asked consider carefully this appeal from the Club. The Chairman also noted that the Club would welcome and benefit from an increase in the number of new members, suggesting that existing members should bring their friends as guests to future meetings, in the hope that some would join.

The nominations for the new Committee were announced as follows: Chairman: Tony O’Shea Vice Chairman: Mike Bennett Immed. Past Chairman: John Dunsire Hon. Secretary: Ken Murray Hon. Treasurer: vacant Hon. Inspiration in paint pots was the order of the day at Sheringham WI’s March meeting. Keith Nash, local watercolour artist from Roughton, amazed us all with how 80% technique and a sprinkling of fairy dust in the form of talent could result in an impressive painting. With an engineering background he tackles his painting with the same methodical approach and was convincing enough to make us all believe with the right technical training we could also turn out potential masterpieces. Keith was also kind enough to donate his painting to us for us to use at one of our Art Buffs nights to have a go and be inspired by. It was a fascinating evening enjoyed by members and the many visitors we had for the event. A buffet provided along with a few glasses of wine ensured a fun night for all.

Details for the Carnival were also finalised with the WI running a Mad Hatter’s Tea party for the children’s fancy dress competition. The Mad Hatter will be organising an afternoon of fun and games as part of the competition at Lifeboat Plain on Wednesday 6 August. There will be cash prizes for winners and lots of fun so start designing those costumes. 7 August will see the WI Nippies out in force running a traditional vintage tea party for the Carnival at St. Joseph’s Church Hall. There will be a tasty afternoon tea, vintage music and a vintage quiz (optional). Tickets will be on sale at £5 from May via the Carnival caravan so make sure you get yours early.

In true WI style April is a night of munching, with a night of cheese, fish and meat ideas from Waitrose, with plenty of opportunities to try! For this month only we are looking forward to being at the new Community Centre. So come and join us on 14 April for a glass of wine, a good laugh and some tasty nibbles. New Activity Group Proves Popular

“Connect” an activity group for adults opened its doors in May 2013. The group is held in The Salvation Army Community Centre, Cremer Street, Sheringham every Wednesday morning between 10am and 2:30pm.

There are many activities for people to enjoy including Carpet Bowls, Table Tennis, Snooker/Pool, Wii Bowling, Board Games, (Scrabble/ Rummikub etc) Craft, Music and Dancing. We offer a daily paper, tea/coffee, biscuits and good company. There is usually a communal jig-saw puzzle on the go if you are that way inclined, or crosswords and word search if you prefer. Some people just like to chat, others look forward to the challenges of the games and activities. We would be very pleased to welcome you to this group, we have lots to offer.

Sheringham solicitor, Peter Howell, is taking on the role of Mr Bumble in the forthcoming production of the musical Oliver!

Peter, who works in the Sheringham office of Hansells, recently took part in a costumed photo-shoot for the show with members of the cast including the two young actors who share the role of Oliver.

The two boys, Joseph (10), from Bacton and Noah Vigor (7), from Aylmerton, worked with well known photographer Eric Brickles and the other actors at Elm Hill in Norwich and also at Gressenhall museum, which was formerly a workhouse. The Cromer and Sheringham Operatic Society are putting on this popular production, as part of their centenary celebrations and they are also raising money for the ‘About With Friends’ a charity based in Cromer, that supports adults with learning difficulties.

Les Misérables comes to Sheringham

An exciting stage version of hit musical Les Misérables opens at the Sheringham Little Theatre on Friday, 11 April.

The production, which runs at the coastal venue until Saturday, April 19, features 30 youngsters from across Norwich and Norfolk. Norwich singer and actor Zaira Palumbo, 19, a former Sprowston High School, who is currently on a gap year before beginning her studies at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, plays the lead role of Fantine in the show. Classically trained soprano Zaira joined the Broadland Youth Choir, where she is now head chorister, at the age of seven. She has also appeared at the Theatre Royal and regularly competes in festivals.

“I have always loved the musical and so when the opportunity arose to audition I leapt at it,” she says. “Fantine is my ideal role. I usually sing in an operatic style so it is nice to be able to focus more on the acting this time. I have never worked with Sheringham Little Theatre before and am thoroughly enjoying it. It is a

tough show to do but our director is fantastic and it is all coming together very well.”

Director Tracy Loftus explains that young people between the ages of eight and 19 are appearing in the production. She says rehearsals are going well and the cast has even been privileged to take part in a workshop with Killian Donnelly and Fra Fee, stars of the award-winning Hollywood blockbuster and hit West End versions of the musical.

Based on the book by Victor Hugo, and with music by Claude-Michel Schönberg, the musical is set against the backdrop of 19th century France. It tells the story of ex-convict Jean Valjean, who is hunted by ruthless policeman Javert, and who agrees to care for factory worker Fantine’s young daughter, Cosette.

Debbie Thompson, director of Sheringham Little Theatre, says “This is certainly an ambitious production for us to do but rehearsals are going beautifully. It has been an incredible opportunity for all those involved and will be a wonderful show to watch.”

And Zaira agrees “I think it will be a very dramatic performance,” she says. “We have worked hard on the fighting and barricade scenes and there will be some really superb singing.”

Full steam ahead for Easter Eggspress

Hop on board the Easter Eggspress at the Bure Valley Railway over the Easter weekend, 18th to 21st April, for an “eggciting” day out for all the family.

Easter Parade

Sheringham Playpark Revamp are bringing back the Easter Parade to Sheringham!

We would like to invite everybody to join us on Easter Sunday, 20 April at 3pm for a parade around the town. There will be a prize for the best Easter bonnet and everyone is welcome to enter!

The playpark will be holding a cake stall, lucky dip and face painting on Ottendorf Green, with the Easter bonnet competition being judged there at 2.45pm before the parade sets off.

One of the organisers Emma White said ‘I understand the Primary School used to organise the parade when they were situated in the town and a former pupil, Bella Brownsell has kindly dug out some old photographs for us’.

Sheringham Playpark Revamp

Sheringham Playpark Revamp Committee members would like to say a big thank you to the staff at the Dunstable Arms, in Sheringham and AN/IX, a local band.

Recently the two came together in order to raise funds for the Playpark. Over £150 was raised and everyone had a great night.

The group has now raised over £14,000 and hope to start work soon. 'Over the 19 months, just over £14,000 has been raised, we could not have done it without loyal support from the community, we will continue to fundraise to provide Sheringham with a Playpark it deserves' said Rebecca Fish.

At last the waiting is over and it is wonderful to be able to share with you all the good news regarding the four (not quite so little) kittens. The blood tests were sent to Bristol for analysis and we were very pleased to receive the results back indicating a negative result for all of them. Two have already left us for a new home together and no doubt by the time you read this the remaining two will also have been chosen.

In our last article I mentioned Patsy, the little kitten with cystitis, and said I would keep you posted on her progress. Although we saw an improvement in her condition on the new food, she continued to need to make frequent visits to her litter trays so it was obvious that all was still not right with her. As she was now of an age to be neutered and, after discussions with David, it was decided to go ahead with this operation and conduct any extra investigations at the same time, while she was anaesthetised. Although I have been a volunteer with Cats Protection for many years it seems there is always something new to learn and this was certainly true in this instance. When I went to collect Patsy, David shared his findings with me and was confident that her problems should now be over. A sample indicated that there were

He advised me that before a kitten is born all the contents of its bladder passes via a tube in the bladder wall to the placenta for disposal. Sometimes this does not close properly when the kitten is born, leading to the problems that Patsy has had. This has now been rectified and should lead to a complete recovery. Although she had quite a bit of blood in her urine the next day (which panicked her fosterer and me) this is normal and will clear up once the operation site heals. Patsy will have had her post operative check before the next issue and hopefully once given the all clear, will soon find a loving new home, as she is such a little character and very sociable. Sheringham Museum wins Heritage Lottery Fund support The Sheringham Museum has received initial support from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) to construct its ‘Atlantic 75 Seaside Education and Archive Centre’.

The project aims to convert the flat roof area on top of ‘The Mo’ building on Sheringham’s East Promenade, where the museum is currently based, into a state of the art archive and education facility to help protect, display and collect the unique maritime and social history of the town, helping new users to engage with the heritage preserved within.

Development funding of £85,000 has been awarded to help the museum progress their plans to apply for a full grant at a later date. This will involve the museum designing over 200sqm of new public space and applying for the necessary planning permissions, as well as preparing and delivering a conservation and education plan around the recently acquired former Sheringham B702 Atlantic 75 Lifeboat and metallic marine archaeological items recovered during the construction of the Sheringham Shoal windfarm.

Being a volunteer lead, independent museum, operated for the benefit of the town, the project will involve the local community at every step of the development process. Key tasks will include the digitisation and relocation of its archives into an accessible space for the first time, gathering oral histories of those who served aboard (and were rescued by) the Atlantic 75 and the involvement of several local schools in undertaking the exciting electrolysis conservation of a concreted Cannon and Anchor which had been sitting on the seabed off Sheringham for hundreds of years. The project will also aim to inspire children and young adults to undertake careers in boat building and design, the renewable energy sector and maritime safety.

Volunteers for the project will now need to be recruited and the museum will be hosting a number of ‘drop in’ information sessions throughout May and June where people can learn more about the redevelopment plans for the ‘Mo’ building and sign up to help with the project.

The timing of the grant is significant as the B702 Atlantic 75, donated to the museum

by ‘The Oddfellows’ with whom she shares her name, turns 20 years old this year. Placed on station in 1994, The Lifeboat was the first Atlantic 75 in the country to enter full operational service after the prototypes were developed by the RNLI and Atlantic College in Wales. Currently not on public display, this project will give her the prominence and secure future she deserves after a long, successful and pioneering career with the RNLI.

Museum Manager Philip Miles said “The museum has been given the unique opportunity to preserve and display significant pieces of Britain’s maritime heritage. Our current premises can’t support this essential growth to our collection as the original ‘Mo’ building was never designed to be a museum and is now at capacity. With the support given by the HLF, we will be able to develop, display and care for our collections further, creating something quite special, not just for Sheringham and Norfolk but for the whole of the UK.”

Robyn Llewellyn, Head of Heritage in the East of England said “we’re really pleased to be supporting The Mo at this stage in their planning; the story of lifeboats, those who operated them and the lives they saved is central to the identity of the town. Marie Curie Collection Raises Nearly £1,400

Cromer and Sheringham Rotary Club teamed up with the Marie Curie Foundation last month to organise the annual Daffodil Collection outside Morrisons in Cromer. The collection, over two days, raised a magnificent £1,389.

£629 was collected on the Friday and £760 on the Saturday. ‘Many people have relatives or friends affected by cancer and identify more readily with the problem and the work of the Marie Curie Foundation in particular’, said Rotarian organiser, Donald Mayes.

He added that the local Rotary Club has now been organising this collection for several years.

Council announces grants to increase household and business flood resilience

North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) is urging households and businesses in the district directly affected by flooding in last December’s tidal surge and storm to apply for grants from central government’s recently announced Flood Support schemes.

The schemes, which will be administered locally by NNDC and operative from 1 April, are intended to assist those individual households and businesses that suffered flooding in December to increase their capability to withstand any future flooding. Businesses adversely affected by the storm can also apply for funds to reimburse business losses and help with business recovery. The deadline for all applications is 31 May 2014.

Both households and businesses directly affected by flooding will be able to apply for up to £5000 from the Repair and Renew Grant. The aim of this grant is to build resilience against possible future flooding events, over and above repairs that would generally be covered by insurance. Measures that might be covered by this grant include such things as airbrick covers, demountable door and window guards, repointing external walls with water-resistant mortar and moving electrics above likely flood level. NNDC will also run the Business Support Scheme, designed to support all small and

medium sized businesses that suffered significant losses as a result of December’s storm. This grant, which is limited to £2,500 per business, aims to cover both clean-up costs and other financial impacts, such as and loss of trade as well as the development and implementation of business recovery plans. NNDC will be applying a council tax discount and business rates relief for up to three months for affected households and businesses. All those known to have been affected will be notified directly when their council tax/business rates information is sent out within the next 14 days.

NNDC Leader, Tom FitzPatrick said, “It now seems a long time since the December storms and thankfully many businesses and households are well on the road to recovery. Many of those affected, however, are still in need of support and I am sure this assistance will come as very welcome news. These payments will not only help those affected to recover some of their losses, but will assist in ensuring that the next event will not be as damaging. “We are keen to make the application process as simple and straightforward as possible. Our aim is to receive an application from every single household and business directly affected by last December’s flooding who still needs support.

Those who experienced flooding suffered significantly and they all deserve the extra help that this package provides, to increase their resilience against flooding in the future.

“We also hope that with households and businesses taking advantage of the grants it will bring benefits for the many high quality local traders and tradespeople, builders, plumbers, electricians etc. that we have in North Norfolk.”

Labour pledges to scrap Bedroom Tax which hits 558 residents in North Norfolk

On the one year anniversary of the Bedroom Tax, Denise Burke, Labour’s parliamentary candidate for North Norfolk pledged a Labour government will scrap the Bedroom Tax which has hit 558 residents in North Norfolk.

Since the Tory/Lib Dem government introduced the Bedroom Tax low-income households have been forced to find, on average an extra £720 a year. According to the National Housing Federation two thirds of households hit by the Bedroom Tax cannot

find the money to pay their rents and one in seven are at risk of eviction.

THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER RHUBARB, RHUBARB

Forced rhubarb is one of the first crops of the year and is said to make the best tarts and crumbles being less acidic and more tender than the naturally grown varieties.

The idea of forcing was discovered by chance two centuries ago, when a gardener accidentally left earth covering his rhubarb and noticed that ‘it was sprouting pink shoots out of season, having been kept warm and dark under the soil. Nine-tenths of the world’s forced rhubarb is grown in a stretch of Yorkshire between Wakefield, Leeds and Morley – known as the pink triangle. It is said that at the peak of the industry ‘you could look out from a bridge in Leeds, and see seven miles of rhubarb in every direction’. There were about 190 growers, with pickers on day and night shifts. A special train – the pink express or Rhubarb Special – left for London every night in season.

Rhubarb is a native of Siberia and thrives in the wet cold winters in Yorkshire. The plants spend two years out in the fields without being harvested. While in the fields the plants store energy from the sun in their roots as carbohydrates. The roots are subjected to frost before being

moved into sheds in November where they are kept in complete darkness. In the sheds the plants begin to grow in the warmth and the stored carbohydrate in the roots is transformed into glucose resulting in forced rhubarb’s bittersweet flavour. The sheds are long low buildings which were originally heated by coal but now by diesel. Traditionally the pickers pull the stalks in candlelight as any exposure to light will stop the growth. It is said that at night it is possible to hear the rhubarb squeak as it grows. By April the season is finished and the outdoor varieties take over.

Set plants of the smaller varieties 2 ½ feet apart each way, but allow 3-4 feet between large-growing varieties. Make sure that each root has at least one eye or bud. Plant the crowns firmly in spring with the top bud two inches below the surface. Remove any flowers that appear and keep the bed free of weeds. Each spring apply a top dressing of general- purpose fertiliser. Lift and divide the crowns every five to eight years. Recommended varieties include’ Timperley Early’, an early –maturing, thin stemmed plant; ‘Hawke’s Champagne’, with deep red stems and ‘The Sutton’ a large, outstanding variety, which seldom goes to seed.

The Crab & Lobster Festival is on its way – and tickets for the Opening Concert are now on sale This May Cromer and Sheringham will host the fifth Crab & Lobster Festival and tickets for the Opening Concert are now on sale.

With numerous events this year’s Festival offers plenty of fun for all the family across the weekend of 17 & 18 May.

The Crab & Lobster Festival will kick off the coming holiday season with an Opening Concert on Cromer Pier on Friday 16 May. This is a show for everyone who enjoys the seaside tradition of Sea Shanties, folk and irresistible humour.

The ever-popular Olly Day returns to host the Concert which features music by the renowned Sheringham Shantymen, French folk group La Grosse Erreur and comedy by Nigel ‘Boy’ Syer.

Local sea shanty group the Sheringham Shantymen have, over 20 years, developed their own style of performing songs of the sea and as well as hundreds of local performances the group has entertained at prestigious Maritime Festivals at Bristol, Southampton and Portsmouth Festival of the Sea.

They welcome French shanty group La Grosse Erreur to England to perform with them on stage especially for the Festival.

Olly Day is firmly established as one of East Anglia’s finest performers. His unique style

combines an irresistible sense of humour, lots of Magic and an impressive singing voice. Olly has just completed his fifth year on stage at Cromer with the Christmas Seaside Special, to rave reviews from both the press and public alike.

Nigel ‘Boy’ Syer is a natural comedian, using daft poetry, hilarious stories and his uncanny ability for acting the fool on stage to get a laugh. Cromer Crab Thermidor

Friday 28th March was a great day for us here at The Grove, and for me personally. Since July, when I came to Cromer, we have had the fantastic privilege of being awarded two rosettes from the AA and seen the restaurant go from strength to strength, but I have been looking forward to getting Cromer crab back on the Grove menu throughout the long winter months and it has been wonderful to get back to work with this most beautiful of seafood.

We only use crab direct from the fishermen of Cromer, so that we know that it is the freshest it can possibly be.

There are so many things one can do with this wonderful, sweet meat, and in this recipe I am going to show you how to make one of the all-time classics; originally a lobster dish but adapted by my team and I just for Cromer – Crab Thermidor.

Cromer Crab Thermidor

Six dressed Cromer crabs 60g shallots, very finely chopped 225ml fish stock pinch of Cayenne pepper 200ml dry white wine 300ml Bechemel sauce 125ml double cream 1tsp strong Norfolk mustard 50g butter, well chilled and cubed 1 tbsp fined snipped tarragon

Method • Combine the shallots, fish stock and wine in

(serves 6-8)

a saucepan and reduce by two-thirds.

• Add the bechemel sauce and cook over a low heat for 20 minutes, stirring every five minutes.

• Add the mustard and cook for another two minutes.

• Turn off the heat and whisk the butter into the sauce, one piece at a time.

• Season with salt and a good pinch of cayenne.

• Finally add the tarragon.

• Take the dressed crab meat out of the shell, bind with the sauce, replace in the shell and bake in the oven (gas mark 4-5) 10-15 mins. (My handy hint: sprinkle with parmesan for a lovely crunchy texture!)

In the run up to Easter, NHS Blood and Transplant is asking readers to think about those less fortunate than themselves and give blood, as well as giving gifts and chocolate to friends and family.

According to Derek Carr, Lead Donor Relations Manager for NHS Blood and Transplant for the Anglia area “Easter is a time of celebrating new life and what better way to celebrate than to help those who need it, by donating blood. It’s an important time to give, as blood stocks are often more vulnerable around public holidays, when people go away or are busy getting out and about as the weather improves.

“If you have an appointment to donate at an upcoming session, please keep it, especially if you are an O negative and B negative blood donor. If you don’t yet have an appointment booked, please make one to donate in the upcoming weeks and help us to keep stock levels healthy.

“We are always grateful to donors who respond to calls such as this and appreciate that in doing so they do give up some of their precious time. Please bear with us if there are slightly longer waits than normal on session as a result.”

Donors with blood group O negative are typically known as the “universal donor” as their blood can be given to patients with a different blood group. This can prove vital in an emergency situation when there may not be time for an immediate blood grouping test to be carried out.

B negative blood is in demand because certain ethnic groups are more prone to particular diseases that require blood, such as sickle cell anaemia and thalassemia and a higher proportion of these ethnic groups are Group B. Group B negative blood can be given to B negative or B positive patients. Just 2% of the population are B negative.

Blood donations are a vital part of treatment for many conditions including cancer and long term illnesses, people involved in accidents and in maternity care. Hospitals across England and North Wales need 7,000 units of blood every day and each unit can save the lives of up to three people.

Anyone aged between 17-65, weighing more than 50 kg (7st 12lbs) and in general good health could potentially start saving lives by becoming a blood donor. There is no upper age limit for donors who have donated in the last two years.

anesthetic solution is injected in the area to be treated. Once the area is totally numb a tiny hair thin laser fibre is introduces into cellulite. The laser is then activated to treat the area. Following this a thin metal tube may be used to even out thicker areas of cellulite. This is followed by application of a compression garment.

What is the recovery like? Some amount of swelling and bruising is common. Most people can return to work within 3-5 days. Sometimes it can take 3 weeks to resume sport or heavy exercise. Results continue to improve for 3-6 months after the procedure.

On 11 April 2009, Gallery Plus, a contemporary art business, opened its doors in Wells-next-the-Sea on the beautiful north Norfolk coast.

The gallery is owned and run by Trevor and Joanna Woods who now combine over 35 years of knowledge and experience in dealing with artists, galleries and picture framing. More than just another art gallery, Gallery Plus is home of the extremely popular and successful contemporary artist Trevor Woods and combines his art studio, PLUS an exhibition space with his work and that of other popular and well known artists and ceramicists, PLUS a professional picture framing service. Work by selected popular artists is on show and for sale in the gallery, including semi-abstract canvases with a local theme by Terry Bestwick, lino cuts by the hugely popular local artist HJ Jackson, who celebrated 60 years of print making in 2013; etchings, books and cards by Graham Clarke, one of Britain's most popular and best-selling printmakers, landscapes that reflect the changing light and seasons by East Anglian artist Paul Evans, one of the leading landscape painters working today. In my last article, I explained some of the fundamental legal aspects about making gifts. This article continues the subject.

Full instructions are needed together with certainty that the client fully understands the implications of their proposed transaction.

There may be more effective ways of achieving the same aim. For example, if someone wants to make sure a particular person inherits an asset, this may be better achieved by making a (new) Will.

If the intention of making the gift is to try to avoid tax, then all the tax implications need to be investigated and explained. There are several relevant taxes here: Capital Gains Tax (“CGT”), Inheritance Tax (“IHT”) and the Pre-Owned Assets Tax charge to Income Tax.

There are complications if the donor retains a benefit in the asset after giving it away because of the Gifts with Reservation of Benefits rules for IHT. These can mean that there is both CGT to pay on the gifting of the assets and then IHT on their eventual death, even after more than

seven years from the date of the gift.

If someone is seeking relief from the worry or responsibility of owning an asset, granting a Lasting Power of Attorney to a family member may be a better way of dealing with that worry. If someone wants to avoid the value of the asset being taken into account for means-testing, such as for long-term care, then advice is needed as to the consequences of such a gift, including tax implications and the risk of Social Security in relation to ‘intentional deprivation of assets’. By this the person making the gift is treated as still owning the asset for the purposes of assessing their eligibility for State or Local Authority financial help towards the cost of care (whether at home or residential). There are any number of other complicating factors, these include the following examples: where the client is infirm or disabled and an adult child has given up a paid job or chance of career advancement to provide full-time, live-in care in the expectation of inheriting the home on their death; where the client is unable to afford the upkeep or pay for necessary

A proper assessment of the implications of making a gift is best achieved by listing the pros and cons and thinking carefully about tax and future care costs. A later request to return a gift may fall on deaf-ears.

Sheringham and Cromer Branch RAF Association

On Tuesday 15 March the Sheringham and District Branch of the RAF Association held their AGM at the Links Hotel, West Runton which was attended by some 40 members. The President, Air Commodore Tom Benson, welcomed those attending and thanked all those who had helped with the work of the Branch in the past year – in particular members of the Committee who had organised and carried out the collections during Wings Week.

Mr Ken Macnish was elected Chairman and the members of the committee were re-elected en bloc. George Baker has reached the age whereby he must give up his duties as Membership Secretary and Standard Bearer and these duties will be taken over by Des Gallagher and Ray Loake respectively. Mr Macnish thanked George for his long service and devotion to his work for the RAF

The President’s Cup, presented each year for outstanding work for the Branch, was this year presented to Ena Moss, who, at a wonderful 99 years old, still finds time and energy to collect and do work for the Association.

Hundreds of people have signed an online petition that calls on the train firms Greater Anglia and National Rail to put on later services in the evening on the Bittern Line.

The North Norfolk Labour Party petition claims train users on the Sheringham to Norwich line are having to cut their evening short and ‘clock watch’ if they want to spend an evening in the city, and that there would be a greater economic benefit to the local nightlife if trains ran later.

They are collecting support from across the district - including those who do not live near the line but drive to the nearest train station on an evening to catch the train.

Some complaints of passengers are that they are currently spending large amounts of money to get back from Norwich by taxi if they want to stay out late at night, and that some people have been missing the last train due to the late

running of events in the city.

The local Labour party are now writing to parish councils to encourage them to lodge their support with Greater Anglia for a late night train.

Denise Burke, Labour's Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for North Norfolk, said “We are calling on Greater Anglia to ensure that no one is left behind at night by providing later trains in the evening. Having to be at Norwich station by 10.45pm during the week before they stop running does not offer enough flexibility, and it means that train users are having to keep an eye on the clock during their night or make alternative arrangements to stay out.

International Speech and Evaluation Contest

North Norfolk Speakers Club recently held an International Speech and Evaluation Contest in North Walsham.

Carolyn Williams was the worthy winner of the International Speech Award, with an impressive speech entitled ‘The Three Bears and Goldilocks’.

Cantamus Choir and friends will reunite to perform Sir John Stainer’s “The Crucifixion” which includes the beautiful “God So Loved the World” on Good Friday 18 April in St Martin Church, Overstrand at 7pm.

This Good Friday tradition of community Easter singing in its 16th year and Cantamus welcome everyone who would like to sing with us either as part of the choir or participating audience. Council takes action to revitalise markets

North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) is reducing costs to traders to try to ensure that its traditional markets continue to play an important part in the economies of market towns.

NNDC manages the weekly markets in Sheringham, Stalham and Cromer, all of which in recent years have seen a decline in the number of traders. In an attempt to help and encourage regular traders and to revitalise the markets the Council has decided to implement a number of changes:

regular traders’ rents reduced by an average of 10% reduced rent for charity stalls - £5 per pitch, with charities being able to book up to 12 places each year

Stalham market has been particularly hit by a decline in the number of regular traders. In this case, with the support of Stalham Town Council, NNDC has decided to concentrate its efforts on revitalising the market over the summer and no longer to run it as an all-yearround market. Stalham market will therefore run from April to September in 2014, with the single regular trader being offered a five month concession licence if no increase in other traders is achieved by May.
