Crab & Lobster Festival launches the Bootiful Boat Art Trail and Scrumptious Seafood Trail Continued from front cover...

People have knitted, painted, sewn and used photography to decorate the Boats which will all be auctioned off to the highest bidder to raise funds for charity in the Festival’s annual Charity Auction on 24 August.

The Scrumptious Seafood Trail features over 20 local cafes, restaurants, pubs and hotels which are all offering delicious, local seafood with a Festival special dish.

Festival Chairman Tony Shipp said “We are delighted to have started the Festival on such a positive note. We hope the Bootiful Boat Art Trail will be as successful as the lifebuoys, it’s a fabulous way for locals and visitors to explore the area and see some unique and wacky designs along the way”.

He added “with the Seafood Trail beginning as well we hope everyone is enjoying sampling some scrumptious seafood in our local pubs, restaurants and cafes”.

General Assistant

We are looking for a flexible and enthusiastic person who is good with people and has DIY and grounds keeping skills to assist at our busy wedding venue in Gresham. 16-20 hours per week, £10 per hour. The Crab & Lobster Festival, which runs 16-18 May, will kick off the coming holiday season with an Opening Concert at Cromer Pier Pavilion Theatre on Friday 16 May hosted by Olly Day and featuring The Sheringham Shantymen, La Grosse Erreur and Nigel ‘Boy’ Sayer. Tickets for the concert are £7.50 and are now on sale from the Pavilion Theatre box office on 01263 512495.

The Bootiful Boat Art Trail will remain in place until Friday 15 August when all Boats will be prepared for the Festival’s annual Charity Auction on Sunday 24 August to coincide with the last weekend of Cromer Carnival.

For more information on the Boats, Seafood Trail or Opening Concert please visit the website www.crabandlobsterfestival.co.uk. This year’s Festival is sponsored by East of England Co-op.

ARE YOU AWARE OF THE CHANGES IN FAMILY LAW?

As from the 22nd April it is now compulsory for anyone wanting to make an application to Court in relation to children or financial matters on divorce to attend a MIAM, otherwise known as a Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting, with a qualified Mediator.

We are delighted to confirm that Mrs Clare Mayell is a qualified Mediator and is qualified to conduct the MIAMS. Why travel into Norwich when you can see a qualified Mediator locally? Mediation is one way of settling disagreements without the expense of going to court. Attendance at a MIAM provides an opportunity for the parties to a dispute to receive information about the process of mediation and to understand the benefits it can offer as a way to resolving disputes. At that meeting, Clare Mayell will discuss the nature of the dispute and will explore whether mediation will be a suitable way to resolve the issues on which there is disagreement. If you would like to make an appointment or need further advice in respect of mediation then please telephone Clare on:

An Appeal from Sheringham & Cromer Lions Club

HANDYMAN Clint Brown Property Services

The Sheringham & Cromer Lions are appealing for help on behalf of the victims of the devastating flooding that hit Walcott, Bacton and Happisbugh in December 2013.

One house was completely lost in Happisbugh and at least 100 homes and 12 businesses in Walcott and Bacton were badly affected by flood damage and the high winds that battered our coast at this time. Flood water surged one and a half mile in land.

The amount of work that still needs to be done is huge. There have been a few homes repaired but of those that have been damaged the householder will not be able to return home before Christmas this year. Some residents today are still without running water and electricity.

The Walcott, Bacton & Happisbugh Communities Flood Relief Group have organised support to help families who are unable to get back into their homes but there is still much more to be done and this costs time and money.

If you can help by donating money please send cheques to Lion Brian Harris, 22 Hannah Close, Sheringham NR268AY . Cheques should be made payable to Sheringham & Cromer Lions Club (Fundraising Account) and please write Floods Appeal on the reverse side. All donations large or small would be gratefully accepted. For more information or offers of help please telephone 01263 821276 or email brihaz@btinternet.com.

We wish to point out that any monies donated will go direct to the The Walcott, Bacton and Happisbugh Communities Flood Relief Group and not via any third party. The money donated to the Flood Relief Group will be go towards purchasing items that may be required for the victims plus materials to assist with the repairs of the houses and caravans. We do not know exactly how many victims had house &/or buildings insurance but we do know that some definitely cannot get insurance cover. It is also understood that the victims may be able to claim for a Government Grant but this will be for future flood defences and not for the current flood damage repairs.

Thanking you in anticipation for your support.

Canaan Christian Centre

Forty residents, mothers and their children stay in Kanaan Haz, the daughter project of Cannan, Sheringham. It was extensively renovated and took five years to turn the building from a ruin to a beautiful centre with en suite facilities for each family. However, there is always a waiting list as abuse is a big problem.

Many teams of all ages from Sheringham and Cromer have been to Hungary to work on this project which is being extended to take more families.

The garage sale held at the Canaan centre in Holt Road, Sheringham on Saturdays (weather permitting) is supporting this venture and all monies raised through the Saturday sales will be donated to this project. The money is taken to Hungary by the Project Manager, Brian Anderson who has overseen the project since its beginning. He is taking out teams in August and is in Hungary at present taking photos and establishing their needs. No money is ever taken out for administration or travel.

No 1 Composer to present Masterclass at Auden Theatre “Never before have I been so moved by my own writing”. With these amazing words

internationally acclaimed composer Patrick Hawes introduced over 100 members of Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society to the music which they have commissioned him to write to commemorate the centenary of the outbreak of the Great War.

A few days ago, closely followed by BBC television cameras (in preparation for a report later in the year), Mr Hawes took time out from a very busy schedule talking about his latest album Angel which is currently number one in

Called Eventide this 45 minute choral work will be performed for the first time in Norwich Cathedral on Saturday 12 July with the English Chamber Orchestra and soprano soloist Elin Manahan Thomas.

Prior to the world premiere performance Patrick Hawes will lead a Workshop in the Auden Theatre on Saturday 17 May. He will talk about the process of composing, referring in particular to Eventide. There will be opportunities for those who wish to sing sections of the new work. This will be a unique opportunity to learn direct from one of the world’s leading composers. Council gallery hosts new exhibition

North Norfolk District Council’s (NNDC) public art gallery is presenting an illuminating and entertaining collection of watercolour originals by Cromer artist June Skinner.

Now a resident in Cromer, June’s former home was in Cornwall, where she attended two art colleges and gaining a Higher National Certificate in Illustration and Design. As a mature student June did not pursue further academic training because of costs and the inaccessibility of education centres specialising in art. However, her time is now spent assionately producing vibrant and fun-loving works.

(who compiled the libretto) were clearly close to the heart of nurse Cavell when she was in prison in Belgium awaiting execution. These are sung alongside quotations from her letters to her family and her nurses. The whole experience is very poignant and moving.

Bob Cumber, chairman of the Society, said “None of this would have been possible without invaluable grants for the arts from Arts Council England, North Norfolk District Council Big Society Fund and the Ernest Cook Trust. Every member of the choir is hugely excited about this once in a lifetime project and greatly looking forward to sharing this wonderful music at the workshop and premiere performances.”

Workshop tickets are available from the Auden Theatre Box Office 01263 713444 at just £15 (just state Rose Villa offer when booking). Tickets for the world premiere in Norwich Cathedral can be obtained from the Theatre Royal Box Office 01603 630000 or via

June has developed her own style using watercolour, acrylic and oil, although she believes watercolour is the best medium for flower paintings.

The colourful “Jolly Ladies” are predominately executed in watercolour or acrylics and reinforce the principle that exuberant art helps improve the overall sense of well-being for the observer “I hope sometimes they make the viewer smile. Colour and smiles are good for all of us.” June Skinner

The exhibition offers original framed watercolours at affordable prices from £30 to £70.

NNDC seeks to offer opportunities to local artists to display their work in the well-lit first-floor ‘gallery’ area in its Holt Road offices in Cromer, and in turn provides staff and visitors to the building the opportunity to see a variety of different artists’ work. Currently six

Holt Probus Club

Members of Holt and District Probus Club enjoyed an excellent Carvery lunch at The Feathers on 3 April, which was followed by the club’s Annual General Meeting.

The retiring Chairman, John Evans, thanked other members for their support during his year as Chairman and felt it had been a successful one. The club now has its own website, attendances at meetings have been good and varied, and interesting talks have been received. The joint meeting with the Kelling and the Cromer and Sheringham clubs Bob Ward, newly was especially enjoyed by the dozen or so members who attended. elected Chairman Eric Dear, as Secretary, said he had made a special effort this year to provide members with as much information as he could, mostly by email. Membership of the club had increased to 46 and a couple more were in the pipeline, but as there used to be 60 members and a waiting list, there was a need for more recruitment.

VEHICLE DISMANTLERS & END OF LIFE VEHICLE RECYCLING CENTRE

Treasurer John Nicholson reported that there had been a surplus of income over expenditure of £79 and the new year started with a balance of £2118. But because of rising costs, annual subscriptions would rise to £13.50 and the cost of lunches to £17 - both increases were accepted by the members present.

Officers elected for the forthcoming year were Bob Ward as new Chairman, Eric Dear and John Nicholson continuing as Hon. Secretary and Treasurer and as Committee Members, John Evans, Steve Dyer, John Lessels, John Nickson and Forbes Pearson. Robin Johnson

Cromer and Sheringham Probus Club

The chairman, Dave Vickery, welcomed four guests, fellow members, and the guest speaker at the lunch-time meeting on 1 March. As usual, it was held at the Links Hotel in West Runton and the food was excellent. The guest speaker was Daniel Adams of One Traveller Holidays, based in Swaffham, which specialises in holidays for mature lone travellers. Daniel explained some of the features of their holidays that make them particularly suited to people wishing to travel on their own but enjoy the security and company of a group. His talk contained many interesting and amusing anecdotes from his career in the travel industry and was delivered in an informal style.

Charity Antiques & Collectables Valuation Day

The popular Charity Antiques & Collectables Valuation Day will take place again on Wednesday 30 April at Arnolds Keys Estate Agents, 11, Station Road, Sheringham, between 10am and 4pm. Specialists will be pleased to value your Antiques, Clocks & Watches, Silver, Jewellery, Collectables, Toys & Dolls, Memorabilia, China & Glassware. There will be a charge of £1 per item, with all proceeds being donated to Cancer Research UK. Suitable lots may be offered for sale in one of our forthcoming Antiques Sales. For further details please phone 01263 822373.

The next meeting is on 6 May, which is an opportunity for members to bring their wives and other guests, either male or female. The speaker will be Greg Powles, who currently presents an afternoon show on weekdays for Radio Norwich. Fortunately, we booked him before he started this, so he is taking a day off especially to come to talk to us. His talk is rather mysteriously called “It’s not what you think it is”- not much of a clue to the content but Greg is an experienced writer and performer who will surely entertain us on the day.

Prospective members or members of other Probus clubs are welcome to come along to enjoy the meal, the talk and the company of Probus members. The club is open to gentlemen who are retired or nearly so. If you are interested, or know someone who might be, please contact Dave Vickery on 01263 824306 for more information.

Can You Help Mr Snuggles?

"Hi there, my name is Mr Snuggles, it's a nice name isn't it, but unfortunately as much as I live up to it, it hasn't helped me find that loving home that I really, really want. If you've got a minute or two to spare, please don't pass me by, I'm here waiting, looking out of my kennel every day, waiting, I don't jump up and down for attention... I wait, patiently...

I've been here at the West Norfolk RSPCA Rehoming Centre (just outside King's Lynn) for a while now and I've settled into the daily routine. I'm no trouble at all and everyone says what a good boy I am. I love everyone I meet, I'm OK with other dogs, I'm very clean in my kennel, I don't chew my bed up, I don't bark too much, I don't pull on the lead, I don't mind you taking my bowl away when I've finished my brekkie or tea, I don't leap up at you, I don't

do anything naughty in fact... I JUST WAIT... I love to look out across the grass in front of our kennels, I can see everyone arriving at the Centre, I see the staff (my friends) arriving in the morning, I see the dog-walkers turning up to take us out, I see all the visitors parking up, and then I wait... for someone to choose me. At the end of the many days I have been here I watch the final visitors leave, I see the staff lock up and get into their cars to go home... but I'm still here, I don't know why... but I'm still waiting, I'm waiting until I can jump into one of those cars... with my own special people, smiling down at me like I see people smiling down at the other dogs who've come and gone before me. Their faces lit up with joy and excitement...

Can you help me please, make my dreams come true, make it so that I never had to sit behind a kennel door, waiting and waiting, in my own little world, but so desperate to be in yours with you....where my waiting is finally over?

And I wait... praying it will be my turn soon.

Tickets were sold to members and friends and some of the cakes and savouries were donated by SiS members. The flowers arranged and donated by a SiS member were very successfully auctioned off by Avril Duke-Millar and the sum of ÂŁ246.15 was raised.

Our photo shows some of the two groups meeting for the hand-over of the money raised, and having a good laugh at the same time! A real tonic for us all!

The ABC group meets on the second and fourth Thursday of the month from 7-9pm at St Josephs Church Hall, Cromer Road, Sheringham. For further details call Sheila McGinley on 01263820924.

Sheringham Society Coffee Morning

A crowd of over 60 people heard a talk on the Norfolk Wherry given by Peter Bower, a member of the Norfolk Wherry Trust.

Over 100 wherries worked the Broads originally, carrying cargo to the East Coast ports. As new and quicker means of transport came in, first the railways and then road transport, the wherries became redundant and either were left to rot or became houseboats. There are still three wherries in use as hire boats for holidaymakers but these are now motorised. The Trust is working hard to restore some of the original wherries for future generations.

A big thank you to Sheringham’s carers LloydsPharmacy launches nationwide campaign to celebrate the UK’s carers

Community pharmacy chain LloydsPharmacy has partnered with charity Carers UK to launch the inaugural National Carers Awards and is looking for nominations from Sheringham.

It is estimated those caring for loved ones who are older, seriously ill or disabled save the UK economy £119billion a year, £1.6billion a year in Norfolk alone. With more than six million people in the UK providing unpaid care - a figure predicted to rise by 3.4 million within 30 years[2] – the awards are designed to celebrate the hugely important and often little recognised role carers play in society.

Nominations for the National Carers Awards are now open and LloydsPharmacy, together with Carers UK want to encourage people from Sheringham to nominate someone they think deserves special recognition for their role in caring for a family member or a friend.

For example, an individual could nominate their mum who is devoted to caring for their dad, a colleague looking after their elderly neighbour, a young adult helping care for a disabled sibling or grandparent or a carer who has set up a support group to help other carers. Whatever the situation, Lloyds Pharmacy and Carers UK want to hear their stories so that they can be celebrated and given the recognition they deserve.

Scott Murray, LloydsPharmacy Pharmacist

Manager in Sheringham commented “Our pharmacy team sees first-hand the sort of selfless dedication that carers from Sheringham demonstrate on a daily basis, to help improve the lives of others. Here in this part of Norfolk we have quite a high proportion of older people but we also have a very strong community spirit and we meet many people who go out of their way to care for others. We really urge people in Sheringham to get behind the campaign so we can say a big thank you and celebrate those who do so much for others.”

They will also receive a £1,000 worth of high street vouchers.

To nominate a carer for the National Carers Awards please visit www.LloydsPharmacy.co.uk/thanksforcaring to complete an online nomination form or pick up a leaflet in your local LloydsPharmacy store. The deadline for nominations is 23.59pm on Saturday 26 April 2014 and the awards will take place at the London Marriott Hotel 10 June 2014. All proceeds from the event will be donated to Carers UK.

Heléna Herklots, Chief Executive of Carers UK, said “Caring for an older or disabled loved one can be incredibly rewarding, but it can also be tough and too often carers care alone without the support and recognition they deserve. Carers are the bedrock of our families and our communities, with many finding time to support other carers in their area on top of their caring responsibilities.

It is vital we highlight the challenges and rewards of caring, and celebrate the contribution of carers across the UK – as without the care they provide, the NHS and social care services would collapse.”

Each of the five winners will receive an all expenses paid break in London, staying at a five star hotel and attending a gala dinner where they will be presented with a trophy.

Poetry Corner

He held me by the hand And taught me how to live In the sun and the rain. When to watch and not to act. When to act and not to watch.

He let my hand go when, And only when, the time Was right to let me be What I could be. He saw my Mistakes and caught me when

I fell. And later, when The apron strings and reins We're broken he watched Me from afar, As I do now as my Children tug at their strings. Chris Hargest

David Whiteley at NOREASTER Group Meeting

David Whiteley made North Norfolk WIs (NOREASTER) group meeting a huge success on 3 April at Sheringham Little Theatre.

is not always the only way to start a career. It was also refreshing to hear from someone who feels passionate about his job and in particular how he hopes to make a difference to individuals and communities through the stories he tells on programmes such as Inside Out.

Hosted by Sheringham WI for NOREASTER 105 members came to be entertained and amused by David's tales of how he came into broadcasting despite in his own words "bombing at his A levels."

He really is an inspiration as to how hard work, determination and some self sacrifice can help you to achieve your dreams, as well as the fact that an academic route

Norfolk Wherry Brass make Finals

Norfolk Wherry Brass is delighted to have qualified again this year for the National Brass Band Finals following its success at the London and Southern Counties Regional Contest. This is the second time in three years that the band has represented the region and they are hoping to repeat their success from 2012 when they won and became National Champions of their section.

The band has members from all across the county and ages range from 14 to over 70. Theo Oxley, from Sheringham, is the youngest member of the Band and the first success of the band’s recently established Academy Band which teaches and trains new players. This was Theo’s

inspiring to hear about how many ways they are all working in their communities to make a difference and inspire women locally, nationally and globally.

David Whiteley's humour was also reflected in the amount of fun and friendship that these WI groups are also having. This meeting was the end of the year for Sheringham WI as hosts to NOREASTER and was the final event of three including a vintage tea party, which is to be repeated for Sheringham Carnival on Thursday 7 August. Tickets will be available from the Carnival caravan. Secondly, December saw Sheringham host a Carol service for over 130 people amongst the Christmas trees at St. Peter's Church. Cromer WI are taking over the hosting of NOREASTER for what will cover the WI Centenary year and will be an exciting time.

North Norfolk Photographic Society A Game of Two Halves!

Rivalry between old friends can get very keen, of course, and never more so than when Brancaster Camera Club meets North Norfolk Photographic Society for a ‘Battle’, as they do every year. This year, Brancaster came to Holt for the contest.

projected digital images were awarded 88.5 compared to Brancaster’s 77.

Thanking Jim Till and other visitors from Brancaster for making the evening such a success, chairman Derek Cattermull praised the quality of the photographs from both clubs.

SHERINGHAM HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY SPRING MEETING

During the judging Ian Hudson gave an illustrated talk on Sheringham Park ,where he is a volunteer, which took the form of a virtual walk around the grounds with Ian pointing out the interesting historical features from tumuli to pill boxes in addition to the trees, shrubs, birds and other animals.

Weather is obviously of great importance to gardeners and we are looking forward to our next meeting when the speaker will be Jim Bacon of ‘Weatherquest’ and ‘Look East’. The meeting is on May 15th at the Lighthouse Church starting at 7.30pm. Everyone is welcome. Bob Wilkinson

The very early spring caused great worries amongst the Committee who were concerned that the daffodils and tulips would be over before the Spring Show on Friday, April 11th. Fortunately however a cold snap came just in time and members were able to find a good number of daffodils and a very attractive display of tulips. Add in the primroses, polyanthus and flowering shrubs and the hall at St Josephs Parish Centre was a picture. Entries by some of our new members were especially welcome and two new classes for an Easter bonnet and four hot cross buns added to the interest.

There were 91 exhibits from 24 entrants and the main winners were Brian and Marion Beaumont, Brenda Corden, Paddy Corden, Eileen Hatton, Doreen Hudson, Jill Jennings, Anne Mann, Corin Pearce, Sarah Reeve and Bob Wilkinson.

Closure of Sheringham PEO

Norfolk Constabulary’s part-time Public Enquiry Office in Sheringham has now closed. The two days a week that the PEO on Weybourne Road, was open have now been transferred to Cromer Police Station which is now open five days a week rather

than three. PEO services are also available at Holt Police Station.

The closure comes following a review of counter services across Norfolk. This review found that Sheringham PEO was not cost effective to run, with few visitors, the majority of which drove to the office. Alternative options were considered, including relocating to a community facility in the town. However the cost of such a project is too high with the ongoing financial pressures for policing Norfolk as a whole.

There is no change to the number of police officers stationed in and covering Sheringham. The Safer Neighbourhood Team remains dedicated to providing the best possible service for the community through regular police surgeries and parish meetings, and routine patrols of priority areas. The next Safer Neighbourhood Action Panel meeting is being held at the Community Centre on Holway Road at 7pm on Thursday 22 May.

Anyone wishing to contact the SNT can email sntsheringham@norfolk.pnn.police.uk or call 101, and you can find out where your local PEO is by logging onto our website at www.norfolk.police.uk.

We now offer many more traditional public services via telephone or online via our website, and for those who require contact for purposes such as reporting lost property of producing documents, the option will remain to visit the nearest PEO.

Local Superintendent Stuart Gunn said "While we acknowledge the closure of this part-time PEO may cause some concerns, the local community can be reassured that this will not affect our commitment to policing Sheringham and the surrounding villages or their access to local officers.

"Sheringham PEO had operated on a part-time basis for some time with a low footfall. At a time of austerity when the Constabulary is making some very difficult decisions around how best to use its reduced funding, it has been agreed that the cost to fund an alternative facility in the town would be disproportionate.

"As a Constabulary we must change with the times and continue to deliver a policing service that offers value for money. This means that we periodically reassess all aspects of our business including policing practices, equipment and procedures and, in this case, the effectiveness of our buildings.

"Closures of police buildings are inevitable as properties are no longer fit for the purposes of modern policing and as communities change and evolve.”

GoGoDragons! will fire up Norwich in 2015 Following on from the amazing success of GoGoGorillas! in the summer of 2013, Break and Wild in Art are delighted to announce GoGoDragons! for summer 2015, bringing more love and laughter, families, communities, artists and local business together for another summer of fun!

‘The success of GoGoGorillas! was unbelievable. The way the public took them to their hearts - the partnerships, sponsors and artists who made the trail come to life will be remembered for a long time to come and the legacy lives on.

This time, Break and Wild in Art have chosen the Dragon, a mythical creature whose legend is much embedded in the history of Norwich. We will be looking for artists to submit designs and businesses to sponsor the Dragons working towards a stunning trail around the City of Norwich in June 2015.

As well as the main Dragon sculptures, there will also be community and school projects to engage with the widest possible audience. We are at the beginning of another awesome

journey which we hope will bring amazing art to Norwich, visitors to our beautiful City and lots of joy and laughter’.

Michael Rooney, Fundraising Manager at Break, says “Break is really looking forward to delivering another fantastic event for Norwich in 2015. We are very pleased to be working with our excellent partners Wild in Art and are excited about the possibilities that the Dragon sculpture brings. We want to build on the success of GoGoGorillas! whilst at the same time delivering some different aspects to increase its appeal to wider communities. Our aim is to have an inspiring event and raise money for Break’s work with vulnerable children young people and families. We will shortly be making an announcement about how

the money from GoGoGorillas! is being used.

Sally Ann Wilkinson, Director of Wild in Art says “Wild in Art is delighted to be working with Break to bring GoGoDragons! to Norwich in 2015. This event will herald the arrival of the Norwich Dragon – a sculpture specifically designed to engage artists, people of all ages and communities in a summer-long celebration of Norwich and Norfolk’s rich cultural offer.“ The Dragon Mould is being created by Chris Wilkinson, Creative Director of Wild in Art.

Sponsor packs and artist packs will be available soon but in the meantime if you would like to register your interest, either with a view to sponsoring a GoGoDragon or submitting designs, please contact Martin Green, Break Fundraising Events Manager on 01603 670107 or email gogodragons@break-charity.org.

Environment Agency confirms over £3/4m funding for storm-hit council

The Environment Agency (EA) has confirmed a grant of £765,000 to North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) towards the costs incurred by the council during the course of the recovery from the tidal surge and storm that hit the 45 mile-long North Norfolk coastline particularly hard last December.

The immediate emergency response and subsequent repairs and recovery effort will cost NNDC over £3m. The initial costs were borne from NNDC’s financial reserves, which as a result are now nearly exhausted, and around half of the £3m is recoverable through insurance and government schemes, including the ‘Bellwin’ scheme. However, the remaining circa £1.5m is not. To help bridge that gap NNDC applied to the EA for emergency coast protection funding. News has now reached the council that the EA has approved a grant of £765,000 for 2013/14, and NNDC has also applied for £276,000 for 2014/

15. The grant is to cover the following work at various locations along the council’s coastline:

765,000 276,000

NNDC Leader, Tom FitzPatrick, said, “This is excellent news for North Norfolk and I am very pleased that the Environment Agency has confirmed this grant. Members and officers have been working tirelessly since December to ensure that government Ministers and departments fully understand the impact of the tidal surge and storm on our coast, and so, given the extent and quality of the recovery work that has been achieved in the district since December I would have been very disappointed if they had not approved funding for the work.

“Even with this EA grant it is likely the council will still be out of pocket to the tune of over £500,000 as a result of December’s events. We are continuing to have a dialogue with central government regarding further financial support and about how such a situation could be avoided in the future, to take the pressure off hard-pressed local government funds.”

NORWICH STUDENTS’ JAZZ ORCHESTRA COME TO CROMER

Cromer and Sheringham Rotary have booked the Norwich Students’ Jazz Orchestra to perform a charity fund-raising concert in Cromer. The event will take in Cromer Parish Church on Saturday, May 3, starting at 7.30 pm. In aid of local charities, it will be the Club’s biggest fund-raising event this year and is aimed at attracting the widest possible audience. “The jazz orchestra marks a complete break from our traditional charity organ concerts and we hope it will appeal to young and old alike as well as a specialist following.” said Rotarian Debz Conisbee who arranged the booking. “They are very talented group and we are fortunate to have obtained their services in May.” The NSJO meets at St. Francis of Assisi School, Jessopp Road, Norwich. Membership is by Invitation only. Tickets for the Charity concert are £8 and available on the door. For more information contact Debz Conisbee on 07775744255 or Donald Mayes on 01263 761392

New ambulance boss: Two years needed to deliver the

improvements needed at ambulance trust It will take two years to bring our local ambulance trust up to a good standard, Norfolk’s top ambulance boss has claimed.

The new Chief Executive of the East of England Ambulance Trust Dr Anthony Marsh was outlining his plans at an Act on Ambulances meeting in Cromer earlier this month – his first public speaking event since he took over the role in December.

said showed signs of progress. However there was still work to be done, with the campaigners’ latest statistics showing that in February 2014 only 35pc of calls for the district were being met within the eight minute target - well below the 75pc expectation of Trusts.

The ambulance chief explained that his first goal was to ensure safety of both patients and staff by investing in Dr Marsh told the audience new vehicles, additional that the average ambulance response time for “home grown” paramedic paramedics, and North Norfolk had fallen from 27 minutes for more ambulance hours which would then lead to life-threatening emergencies to 18 minutes improvements in response times. He was also over the first three months of 2014, which he critical of his predecessors’ attempts at rota re-designs, which had an over-reliance on Rapid Response Vehicles rather than It was a very full house for the April meeting and no wonder! The Double Staffed speaker was the co-author of the book, "William Faden and Norfolk's

Sheringham History Group

Eighteenth Century Landscape" who, along with Tom Williamson ,won the 2011 EDP-Jarrold East Anglian Book Award in the history section. The book with companion DVD brings Faden's map of Norfolk from 1797 to the present day by redrawing the original digitally by computer.

William Faden was geographer to His Majesty the Prince of Wales when he published the map of Norfolk in 1797. Mr. Macnair stated Norfolk had been behind in being mapped and the county had more common land and ancient woodland than any other county. It was poor land for growing crops. The original Faden map showed the big estates such as Holkham Hall and Beeston Hall.

The recent version of Faden's map of Norfolk was re-drawn by overlaying present day maps by computer which is difficult to explain or indeed to create it. Mr. Macnair, a retired GP from Foulsham, has a website: www.fadensmapofnorfolk.co.uk and the Norfolk Record Office has a split screen where you can look at local areas past and present at the same time. A very interesting and informative talk about mysterious Faden's maps.

Ambulances.

He answered a variety of questions which included the crisis in A&E, long-term funding for the service, and contracts for private ambulances.

Denise Burke, who chaired the meeting and is Labour’s Prospective Parliamentary Candidate for North Norfolk, said “Dr Marsh has set some clear priorities for turning around the trust and improving performance in North Norfolk. It will take time to recruit and train new staff and get more ambulances on the road but we welcome his ambitions.

Act on Ambulances will monitor progress closely to ensure that North Norfolk gets the ambulance service it needs for its ageing population in remote rural/coastal areas and influx of tourists.

Any local residents experiencing issues with the ambulance service can contact us for help in raising the matter with the trust. We have invited Dr Marsh back to North Norfolk in a year's time to see what progress has been made.”

Sheringham Fairtrade Town update As ‘Fairtrade for Sheringham’ is about to apply to the Fairtrade Foundation to become a Fairtrade Town, I thought readers might be interested in how it all happened. In May last year the Mayor, Doug Smith and his Deputy Tricia Brooks, met to discuss the possibility of Sheringham trying to become a Fairtrade Town. We had details of what was required from the Fairtrade Foundation. The first requirement was that the Town Council would pass a resolution to support the application and agree to serve Fairtrade tea and coffee at Council Meetings. After the full Council Meeting it was passed unanimously. The next step was to form a Committee of people representing different aspects of

At present they are Tricia Brooks (Town Council), Becky Robinson (Schools), Phil Goddard (Break) (Community), Christine Bone (East of England Co-operative) (Workplaces), Gwynneth Sibilia (Churches), Brenda Smith (Clubs and Societies) and Paula Chapman (Community). We have organised several events to show people that we are aiming to become a Fairtrade Town and to raise some money for future events - two coffee mornings, two stalls with Fairtrade goods - one at the Primary School and one at the Lights Switch-On, a home-made Fairtrade cakes stall and a competition and a talk at the Primary School. First World War Concert at St Peter’s

The hundredth anniversary of the start of this terrible conflict is to be commemorated in St Peter's Parish Church, in a concert planned for Friday 2 May, starting at 7.30 pm.

Gresham's School will be bringing their 30 strong chamber choir, the highly commended 'Schola Cantorum', to perform a programme fitting the occasion.

This will include Ireland's 'Greater Love', Guest's 'For the Fallen' and Parry's 'There is an old belief'. The second half will include a group of lighter arrangements - 'Aint Misbehavin', 'Over the Rainbow' and a selection of brass ensemble pieces.

Do please support what will be a marvellous musical occasion, with the added incentive of 'St Peter's famous 'Posh Refreshments'!

Handbells and Piano at St Peter’s

St Peter's Church, Sheringham, presents a programme of handbells and piano duets, by Honingham Bellfolk and by Philip Adams and Michael Finnissy at 7.30pm on 17 May.

Bellfolk is based in Honingham near Norwich, where there has been a local handbell team for over 40 years! However, the present ten members are not all local and travel as far afield as Gorleston, Reepham or Norwich to ring with the team. Throughout the year, a wide range of music is played on 31/2 octave set of traditional English handbells, which were manufactured well over a century ago. In addition, the group has benefited from a lottery grant from 'Awards for All' to acquire a 3 octave set of handchimes to enhance their programmes. Their varied repertoire includes classics, tunes from the shows and light popular favourites, to provide entertainment for all.

If you have never heard tunes rung on handbells before, then this is an opportunity not to be missed!

The concert starts at 7.30 pm and tickets are £5. 'Posh Refreshments’ will be available during the interval.

The Museum of the Broads

If you haven’t yet visited the Museum of the Broads at Stalham Staithe, come in 2014! We have activities for families and plenty of unusual displays – you may have seen a coypu, but how about a lifeboat that was dropped from the air? Plus, our steam boat Falcon runs on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and event Sundays. There’s something for all ages, and dogs are welcome too. Free entry to café and shop and we also have a great picnic area by the river for our visitors to enjoy.

Around 30 volunteers and staff worked hard all winter to re-vamp displays, re-decorate the Museum, and overhaul our steam boat, Falcon. New for 2014 are displays of a model yacht built by a teenaged apprentice boat builder in 1918, items from the old Stalham Pharmacy and Roys of Coltishall (yes, Coltishall came before Wroxham!), a children’s mascot called ‘Dolly Duckling’, a ‘land boat’ for our younger visitors to steer, and much more besides at our unique waterside setting.

From mid-June, our must see exhibition, ‘Broadland During the First World War’, will be on display at the Museum. The exhibition features a film made, illustrated and animated by students from Stalham High School, and includes displays relating to the home front and to life on the front line. We hope it will be a fitting tribute to those who lived and died in Broadland during the Great War.

Events for May: Enjoy the Sheringham Shantymen at Hoveton Village Hall on Sat 2 May, bag a bargain at our Boat and Fishing Jumble on Sunday 11May, bring the family for a Teddy Bears’ Picnic on the evening of Friday 16 May, and learn to weave on Saturday 17 May. Contact us for prices and full details.

We’re at Stalham Staithe, NR12 9DA. Phone 01692 581681 or see our website, www.museumofthebroads.org.uk. And remember, if you join as a Friend of the Museum, you get free entry all year.

Dear Margaret,

Local residents may not all be aware that the last bus from Sheringham to Holt now connects with the last train from Norwich on Mondays to Saturdays. The train arrives Sheringham at 11.44 and the Sanders no. 5 bus now leaves at 11.48 instead of 11.26. Yours sincerely David Hurdle, Sheringham

Toot, Toot, Toot – the Wizard Express Steam Train is on its Way

Following the success of last year’s Sleepytime Steam Train, the North Norfolk Railway is kindly providing a steam train again for Sheringham Carnival this year. This year the train will be the Wizard Express running on Friday 8 August from Sheringham to the magical kingdom of wizards, fairies, hobgoblins and elves. Children are being asked to get into their wizard or fairy costume, grab their magic wand and favourite magical cuddly toy, and jump aboard the Wizard Express Steam Train to cast their enchanting spells.

On their journey they will look out for the

journey they will enjoy a wizardly biscuit and drink and there will be some ‘surprises’ – ssshhh, we can’t say more or the wizard and fairy magical spell will be broken!

There will a wondrous prize for the best dressed wizard and fairy, the best homemade magical wand and for the winner of the magical quiz.

wizardly and fairylike clues and creatures. When they reach the kingdom of wizards, fairies, hobgoblins and elves there will be spellbinding stories and games. On their return

Tickets (£5 per child and £5 per adult) will start to go on sale at the Crab and Lobster Festival (17 /18 May) and can be purchased from Starlings Toymasters in Sheringham or the Carnival Caravan. Book early to avoid disappointment!

Bags, Bottles and a Brush!

The first stream-clean of 2014 took place on Saturday 12 April by the Sheringham Loke RiverCare Group and produced its normal ‘crop’ of plastic bags and wine bottles, but also a garden brush!

The team, consisting of Alison Lees, David Braithwaite and Francis Farrow (Hon. Warden for Beeston Common) thought that the litter was not as bad as usual, however, four plastic bags were still filled and a dozen or so bottles collected. Litter is therefore still a problem around the area of the Loke, Beeston Back Common and the Top Common and the ‘Keep Britain Tidy’ message still needs to be reinforced.

On the upside, while walking around the Commons, it was very nice to see the spring flowers, such as Marsh Marigold, Meadow Buttercup, Bluebell and Cuckoo Flower in bloom.

Our next ‘Stream-clean’ will be in July so please look out for the notices around the area if to wish to join us. If you would like an email reminder please contact Francis Farrow on hon.warden@btinternet.com

WW1 - 100 Walk On 26 April the Veterans In Action team will be embarking on the WW1 - 100 walk covering 4000 miles over 100 days.

The aim of WW1-100 is twofold. Primarily it is to raise awareness of the Centenary of the start of the Great War and the sacrifices made by the three million British and Commonwealth service personnel who were killed or wounded in the service of their countries. Secondly it is to learn from the past and raise funds for those veterans who are currently suffering from the effects of war or who have found the transition to civilian life difficult.

VIA take a non-therapy approach and instead uses the outdoors and challenging events to help rebuild confidence, self-esteem and self-belief in the themselves.

In the past three years VIA have walked a distance of 6400 miles over the UK in a series of walks called the Union Flag Walks which, when

completed, will take the form of the Union Flag over mainland Britain.

WW1-100 will be a long-distance relay walk around the coastline of mainland Britain which will start from the Tyne Cot War Cemetery at Ypres (Iepres), Belgium. The VIA Walking Team will pass through over 700 villages, towns and cities en-route and will be seen by millions of people throughout the 4,000 mile walk.

The aim is to raise £3Million which equates to £1 for each British and Commonwealth service person from WW1 who were killed or wounded. The funds raised will enable VIA to continue to deliver and develop their unique ALIVE Program.

Locally, the team will travel along the A149 from Stalham towards North Walsham on Friday 9 May, reaching Cromer and Sheringham the following day, Saturday 10 May.

Yoga for All Morning

A group of North Norfolk yoga teachers are offering a morning of yoga for all to raise money for the Norfolk charity Nelson’s Journey.

Nelson’s Journey is a registered charity providing a service for children and young people aged 0-17 years inclusive, living in Norfolk, who have experienced the death of a significant person in their life.

Burn up to 800 calories in 60 minutes. Total bodyweight only workout to develop functional fitness, increase muscle strength and tone. A new workout, every workout.

They aim to improve the emotional well-being of bereaved children by increasing their confidence and self-belief, providing education about the causes of death and enabling families to talk openly about their bereavement.

They also provide opportunities to remember those who have died and help children to express and understand their emotions.

Sheringham Primary School Wednesdays – 7pm - 8pm

Nelson’s Journey endeavours to ‘bring back smiles to bereaved children’.

It is currently estimated that 1 in 29 school aged children have experienced the death of a parent or sibling. In Norfolk this equates to approximately 3825 children. This figure is significantly higher when pre-school children and 17 year olds are included. During 2010, 214 children from around Norfolk received a service from Nelson’s Journey. The charity estimates that 280 children, living in Norfolk, experience the death of a significant person in their lives annually.

The yoga morning will be held at Swanton Novers Village Hall on Saturday 7 June and will include Family Yoga 10am – 10.45am, Gentle Yoga 11am – 11,45am, Deep Relaxation and Meditation 12pm – 12.45pm, all at £5 per class per adult, children under 12 years free.

Cromer Junior School Fridays – 6pm - 7pm

Only £2 per session until the end of May For more details please contact Garry on 07788 296916 or at www.facebook.com/armageddonwithgarry

There will also be delicious homemade refreshments and a raffle. A representative from Nelson’s Journey will also be present with information on their valuable work. All are welcome, even if just for a cup of coffee and a chat.
