Carnival Queen 2014
Covering Sheringham, the Runtons, Holt and surrounding villages in association with the Cromer Times and North Walsham Times
On Friday 11 April Sheringham Carnival had the annual Carnival Queen Selection Evening at The Tyneside Club, Sheringham.
Shannon Cramp (age 21) was selected as Carnival Queen 2014 with Brianné Neale (18) and Cheryl Copeland (21) as her attendants.
As always, it was a difficult choice for the judges as all the girls who entered equally deserved to win.
The Prince and Princess selection disco will take place on Friday 1 August. See the programme (which will be available from the time of the Crab &Lobster Festival) for details Left Brianné Neale, Centre Shannon Cramp, Right Cheryl

events for 2014 such as the Ted Devils aerobatic display, The Red Barrows (our answer to Cromer’s Red Arrows!), a professionally run Casino night and a professional Drag Queen Evening! ‘And also, NEW for Sheringham and Beeston Regis, - how many people can we fit on Beeston Bump? Do come along and enjoy!
We also have a new competition this year - the Scarecrow Trail.
Also available from the 18th May are:
• Tickets for the Wizard Express Steam Train which can be purchased from Starlings Toymasters or the Carnival Caravan; • Tickets for the Carnival
Masquerade Ball and the Drag Queen Evening – from the Carnival

The carnival caravan will be located in the town during the Crab and Lobster Festival on 18 May and then again from 26 July, as well as on key event days leading up to the carnival, including the Potty Festival, the Classic Car and Bike show and the Harley Davidson bike invasion.
We hope you will enjoy your programme and of course the carnival. Let your imagination run riot, let your hair down and join in!

ARE YOU AWARE OF THE CHANGES IN FAMILY LAW?
As from the 22nd April it is now compulsory for anyone wanting to make an application to Court in relation to children or financial matters on divorce to attend a MIAM, otherwise known as a Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting, with a qualified Mediator.
We are delighted to confirm that Mrs Clare Mayell is a qualified Mediator and is qualified to conduct the MIAMS. Why travel into Norwich when you can see a qualified Mediator locally? Mediation is one way of settling disagreements without the expense of going to court. Attendance at a MIAM provides an opportunity for the parties to a dispute to receive information about the process of mediation and to understand the benefits it can offer as a way to resolving disputes. At that meeting, Clare Mayell will discuss the nature of the dispute and will explore whether mediation will be a suitable way to resolve the issues on which there is disagreement. If you would like to make an appointment or need further advice in respect of mediation then please telephone Clare on:

Sheringham Town Council
Sheringham Community Awards The Sheringham Community Awards scheme, set up to recognise the achievement and effort of individuals or groups for their work in enriching the quality of life for residents and visitors to Sheringham, is now in it’s second year. A Community Award is the Council’s way of publicly honouring a group or individual whose work goes largely unrecognised and may not be fully appreciated by the community at large. The Mayor of Sheringham, Cllr Douglas F Smith, presented the awards at the Annual Town Meeting held at the Community Centre in Sheringham on Tuesday 22nd April 2014. Please find below details of recipients of the Sheringham Community Awards along with reasons for their nominations for the year ending 31st December 2013.

They are an important asset for Sheringham with the Common to the South of Cromer Road having the environmental accolade of being a Site of Special Scientific Interest. They have both contributed greatly to the success of various Carnival events.
Maurice and Jill have been inspirational members of the Evergreens Lunch Club, set up in Sheringham 26 years ago for the elderly and lonely in the Town. They have continued to support it’s work and are still actively working on the committee and coordinating transport. As well as the Lunch Club they have been an active part of Sheringham Church life and are deserving members of the Town, worthy of an award.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
The message on our answer phone asks people to phone the special number shown below if they wish for help to neuter their cat but to leave a message if they are calling for any other reason. Unfortunately, if they do call the neutering line for any other reason (and this does happen quite often) our volunteer who “mans” the phone will not be able to help them and they will need to ring the “cat” phone again and leave a message. Stephanie will respond to their enquiry as soon as she can, although we do ask people to ring again if she has not done so within 24 hours, as sometimes the message is indistinct, or the person forgets to leave their number. Working, looking after her own animals, plus the cats in the pens at her home, does mean she is not available to respond straight away, so please do give her time to get back to you before calling again.
Cats come into care for lots of reasons but it is always sad when someone has to re-home their cats because of a relationship breakdown resulting in them not being able to afford to keep them. Having to part
Romeo
Romeo is a one-yearold Staffie who, as his name suggests, is desperately looking for love! He could
happily live with a 'Juliet', but he loves everyone and he won't mind what your name is!
He is a very loving, friendly boy who would love a home with plenty of human company, and exercise, every day please, and where he can snuggle up to you on the sofa. He is dog-friendly and could live with children aged 10+. He knows basic commands and is neutered,
A big thank you to all who helped and supported the recent charity event in Cromer for Faith Animal Rescue where the magnificent amount of £743 was raised!
IF YOU HAVE A B&B OR GUEST HOUSE WE WOULD LOVE TO MAKE YOUR LIFE EASIER.

Romeo hasn't had much good luck in his life and is very distressed in kennels, poor boy, but we want to turn it around for him now and show him what a loving home is really like. Ideally we would love a permanent home for him, but we would also welcome enquiries to foster him please, until his forever home can be found. Please help this lovely young dog find happiness at last, thank you.

I have very much enjoyed being part of the wonderful Crab and Lobster Festival over the weekend and serving up my beautiful seafood paella. I do think that this part of the world has so much to be proud of and it’s great whenever we can shout about the fabulous local produce that we deliver day in and day out.
Paella is of course an amazingly tasty dish to make and enjoy and it’s always good fun to serve, especially in the summer. (We had a six-foot paella dish for the festival which serves up to 250 people, so you’ll be relieved to hear that I’ve cut down the ingredients that you will need somewhat!)
We had an exceptionally busy Easter here

Council urges affected households and businesses to apply for assistance from flood support scheme – deadline 31 May
that people whose properties were flooded and who might not initially have considered completing an application will now do so before the deadline. Four applications have already been approved, with a combined value of more than £15,000 being awarded so far.
North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) has been assisting households and businesses in the district directly affected by flooding in last December’s tidal surge and storm to apply for grants from the recently announced Flood Support Scheme. The Council is urging anyone affected to get their applications in before the 31 May deadline. The central government schemes, administered locally by NNDC, have been operating from 1 April and are intended to assist those individual households and businesses that suffered flooding to their property in December to increase their capability to withstand any future flooding.
Businesses adversely affected by the storm can also apply for funds to reimburse business losses and help with business recovery. The deadline for all applications is 31 May 2014. NNDC is doing all it can to encourage affected households and businesses to apply, and has held community advice surgeries in Wells, Walcott, Blakeney and Bacton, the areas most affected. Officers from the council’s emergency planning, housing and coastal teams dealt with 65 requests for advice and assistance with grant applications at the four events. In addition, officials from the Environment Agency were on hand to give advice, along with suppliers of some of the products which the grants may cover.

NNDC Leader, Tom FitzPatrick said “It now seems a long time since the December storms and thankfully many businesses and households are well on the road to recovery. We are keen to make the application process as simple and straightforward as possible and our aim is to receive an application from every single household and business directly affected by last December’s flooding who still needs support. “ Both households and businesses affected by flooding to their property can apply for up to £5000 from the Repair and Renew Grant Fund. The aim of this grant is to build resilience against possible future flooding events, over and above repairs that would generally be covered by insurance. Measures that might be covered by this grant include such things as airbrick covers, demountable door and window guards, repointing external walls with water-resistant mortar and moving electrics above likely flood level.

NNDC is also running the Business Support Scheme, designed to support all small and medium sized businesses that suffered significant losses as a result of December’s
storm. This grant, which is limited to £2,500 per business, aims to cover both clean-up costs and other financial impacts, such as and loss of trade, as well as the development and implementation of business recovery plans.
NNDC will also be administering a government funded scheme for business rates and council tax discount. Properties that were flooded and are classed as a person’s sole or main residence are eligible for up to six months council tax discount. For business premises which were flooded, a three month discount applies. All those known to have been affected are being notified directly with their council tax/business rates information. Details of the schemes, guidance as to who can apply and application forms are available on the NNDC website www.northnorfolk.org
Great result for local children in 10k charity run
On 5 April three Sheringham Primary school pupils raised money for charity. Emelie Taylor, Alex Smith and Oscar Taylor along with their PE teacher Matt Groves completed a 10k run within one hour.
Also on the day was a cake stall and raffle held at Weybourne Station where the run began and ended.
Two more young children, Phoebe Taylor and Jack Bradshaw, were in charge of collection buckets along the station platform.
The combined efforts of all involved raised a massive £2400 with 80% going to The Big C and 20% going to Macmillan Cancer Care.
Emelie,Alex and Oscar would like to say a big thank you to everyone who supported the event and to all the local businesses that contributed raffle prizes.

Intestacy Rules
written by Adele Moore – Trainee Solicitor with Hayes + Storr Why should I make a Will? I do not have anything to leave.
This is a question most people will ask at some point in their lifetime. Often people are worth more dead than alive, in terms of life policies and pension funds falling in.
If you die without a Will the intestacy rules take effect. These are rules which are set down by law detailing who is to benefit from your estate.
If somebody dies intestate whilst married with children, they may think their entire estate will pass to their surviving spouse. However, only the first £250,000 passes to your spouse absolutely. The remainder of the estate will be divided into two parts. The first part will be a life interest for your surviving spouse and the other half will be split equally between your children when they attain the age of eighteen.
Generally, a married couple with children will wish on the first death for their entire estate to pass to their spouse and only on the second death is it to pass to the children.
If you die intestate with children and are not married or in a civil partnership, the entire estate will pass to the children in equal shares. This will include estranged children. Therefore, even if you have a child who you do not see,
they will still be entitled to an equal share in your estate.
The intestacy rules do not favour cohabiting couples. If you are not married or in a civil partnership and die intestate your partner will not be entitled to any of your estate. If you have children, again your children will benefit and you may hope they would provide for your partner but this is not always the case. If you want your partner to benefit you have to make a Will. If you do not have children your estate will pass to other family members.*
If you have made a Will you get to choose who will be responsible for the administration of the estate, your Executors. If you die intestate, your estate’s administrators are selected from the beneficiaries, who might not be individuals who would get on or are competent to do the job. If any child is under eighteen or the surviving spouse is entitled to a life interest in part of the estate, then there have to be two administrators. Sometimes circumstances are such that two, eligible potential administrators are not available.
Below is an example of a simple intestate estate: Mr & Mrs X have assets worth £1,000,000, £500,000 in Mr X’s name and £500,000 in Mrs X’s and no Will. Mr X has two children from a
previous marriage who he no longer sees. There are three children of the current marriage. Mr X dies. Mrs X would inherit £250,000 plus a life interest in £125,000. The remaining £125,000 would be split between the five children, each receiving £25,000. Mr X had not had contact with his two children for 20 years and therefore the estate had to bear the cost of locating them. This would reduce the shares the children receive and the life interest.
One of the major issues when someone dies intestate is the cost of locating beneficiaries. In the above examples, it may be easy to locate all the children. But in situations where someone dies intestate with no children and their spouse has predeceased them, the cost of tracking beneficiaries can take up a large proportion of the estate. Please see our next article ‘Intestacy rules – no immediate family’. *Please see ‘Intestacy rules – no immediate family’.

In the evening it’s the turn of The Bad Shepherds featuring Adrian Edmondson. Superb musicianship combined with Ade’s hilarious between song banter utilising his irreverent sense of humour creates a show that has been the hit of many festivals. This year, the Festival’s sixth, is shaping up to be another exuberant week of international music, drama, visual art, literature, dance, comedy, free street entertainment, kids shows and workshops.

donated by Starlings of Sheringham.
Over £120 was raised for the Sheringham Playpark Revamp Group and committee members were delighted with the turnout for the parade.
Parents, carers and children turned out in their dozens over the course of the morning of Easter Saturday to take part in the Easter Egg Hunt at The Patch in Sheringham.
“We had a great day,” said Matthew Smith, Director of The Patch and Business Manager of Sheringham Woodfields School. “Not only did the children hunt for eggs, they enjoyed colouring and a fruit and vegetable quiz, meeting our hens and generally exploring The Patch.
“There were some lovely quotes from parents on Facebook,” he goes on. ‘It was our absolute pleasure to attend. You did the community proud. It was really well thought out and looked to appeal to young and old alike. Thanks again,’ commented one parent. “Wonderful time at The Patch Easter Egg Hunt. Our child had a great time, as did we adults! Lots of scrummy eggs for us to enjoy,’ said another."
Matthew finishes by saying "All the proceeds from the Easter Egg Hunt will go towards sustaining activities at The Patch, which provides so much benefit to the pupils at Woodfields, Sheringham Primary School and Sheringham High School."

The Crab & Lobster Festival is on its way! – Nip along to north Norfolk This May Cromer and Sheringham will host the fifth Crab & Lobster Festival with a host of seafaring fun for all the family.
With numerous events this year’s Festival offers plenty to do across the weekend. The Festival will begin with an Opening Concert on Friday 16 May at Cromer Pavilion Theatre with a night of seaside fun, folk and comedy. Hosted by Olly Day and featuring the Sheringham Shantymen, French shanty group La Grosse Erreur and entertainment by the fabulous Nigel ‘Boy’ Syer, it will be a night to really start the Festival in style.
The Festival weekend continues in Cromer on Saturday 17 May and in Sheringham on Sunday 18 May with a programme which promises a feast of superb seafood, scintillating entertainment, seafaring crafts, music, comedy, film, food and craft stalls, seafood competitions and a seafood Paella night.
Festival chairman Tony Shipp said “I am looking forward to another enjoyable weekend in both the towns. Each has a distinctly different venue. In Cromer Evington Lawns will host the stalls, cookery theatre, heritage marquee, food and entertainment, whilst in Sheringham these will fill the narrow streets at the seaward end of the town. I would like to welcome you all in advance to the 5th Cromer and Sheringham Crab & Lobster Festival.”
This year’s Festival will host a range of events centred on our fabulous local seafood and seafaring heritage. Central to this will be cookery demonstrations by local and not-solocal chefs in the cookery theatre. Audiences will be shown how to make the most of our local, scrumptious seafood across the two days. Organiser Nick Samujlik said “the demonstrations this year will be offer a mix of traditional, oriental and educational demos that will have your mouth watering and your taste buds tingling”. In Cromer this will be hosted in a marquee on Evington Lawns alongside a bar from Woodforde’s.
Accompanying the cookery theatre will be a host of demonstrations from local fishermen on the art of net braiding and pot making as well as the ever popular mobile aquarium from EIFCA. Committee member and local fisherman John Davies said “Fishing is an important part of the two towns’ heritage and visitors will be able to witness at first hand these traditional crafts and take a look at how the fishermen construct the traditional wooden crab pots as well as parlour pots.”
Throughout the weekend there will be Crab Dressing demonstrations as well as the chance to have-a-go yourself and take part in crab dressing competitions hosted by Julie Davies.
Alongside the main attractions will be an array of activities for children to enjoy and street entertainment for the whole family from Punch and Judy to Razz the Clown.
Local museums will be offering a host of events from, ‘Fishermen’s step dancing performances’ at Cromer Museum to
‘Make your own Crab Puppets’ at the RNLI Henry Blogg Museum in Cromer.
On the evening of Saturday 17 May, the Festival will be hosting it’s first ever Seafood Paella evening in the Festival marquee in Cromer together with live music and a bar. This spectacular dish will be cooked in a sixfeet paella pan by The Grove, Cromer and will feature both Crab & Lobster.
The paella will be £6 per person on the night. Head chef Charlie Hodson from The Grove said “It’s been a great honour to be involved in the Festival this year and I am really looking forward to being able to contribute something special that I always enjoy cooking. Paella is the most wonderful dish when prepared and cooked traditionally, and of course the key is this fantastic seafood that we are lucky to have right on our doorstep. We are celebrating crab and lobster and of course they will be the main stars of the paella. Myself and the Grove are delighted to be playing a part in the Festival and we very much look

forward to this being the start of a great relationship.”
Events which are already up and running and which continue over the Festival weekend and into the summer months include the Seafood Trail and the Bootiful Boat Art Trail where over 70 decorative boats are located across the two towns in shop windows and outdoor spaces. Leaflets for both trails are available in local tourist information centres and at most trail locations.
Talking about the two trails Festival president Hilary Cox said “From the 6ft crabs and lobsters on the Art Trail five years ago to the deckchairs, windbreaks, lifebuoys and boats this year, I am continually amazed at the ingenuity and imaginations of the artists and the creative and tasty seafood dishes that make up the Seafood Trail. It all encourages locals and visitors alike to sample the delights of this unique area. You are not going to be disappointed this year, come along, enjoy and see what north Norfolk has to offer!”

EACH Marathon effort for 2014
A dedicated team of runners competed in the Virgin Money London Marathon this year in aid of East Anglia's Children's Hospices (EACH) and so far have raised more than £27,000.
A total of 25 runners took part in the London Marathon on Sunday 13 April in aid of EACH. Twenty of the runners had secured their own places, while the other five runners had gained places from The Charities Forum - the collection of charities of which The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry are Patrons. This was made possible by HRH The Duchess of Cambridge who is EACH Royal Patron.
The Charities Forum runners were Dr Cain Hunt from Swaffham Bulbeck in Cambridgeshire, Frankie Ricci from Great Notley in Essex, Nicholas Richardson from
Blofield in Norfolk, Scott Mason from Haughley in Suffolk and Paul Wombwell from Brantham in Suffolk. These five runners raised an impressive £13,783 of the £27,364 total raised by the group collectively.
Camilla Haycock, EACH Fundraising Development Manager, said “We’re absolutely delighted with the success of our runners this
year, and would like to thank them for their hard work as well as their friends, families and colleagues for supporting them.
“We wish everyone luck who has applied for a place this year, and would like to encourage anyone who is successful, to consider running in aid of EACH. We’re hopeful of obtaining places for the 2015 event via The Charities Forum again, and will be informing supporters if we’re successful and how they’ll be able to bid for the places.”
The ballot for 2015 places opened at midnight on Monday 21 April and closed in a record time of just 9 hours and 50 minutes after 125,000 people registered for places.
Applicants will know in October whether they’ve been successful.

Tim celebrates a decade of Classical Guitar Tuition
It’s been 10 years this spring since I started my Guitar Tuition practice, teaching both privately and in schools, and I’d like to say a big thank you to all my students, past and present for making it such a fantastic decade.
wanting to follow a classical route, I also offer rock, folk and flamenco lessons.
Music has the power to enrich all our lives, regardless of age or ability, with evidence that learning an instrument can improve the academic achievements of students in other subjects, as well as giving us invaluable life-skills.
During this time I’ve had the honour of preparing many musicians for Trinity College grades, and to date we have had well over 200 entries If you, or a member of your family from initial all the way up to grade would like to learn this fantastic and Tim, with student Gabriella Ryan 8, with a 100% pass rate. eastlaw shortlisted for prestigious award North Norfolk District Council’s (NNDC) legal team, eastlaw, has made it to the finals of the National MJ Achievement Awards.
Many hundreds of councils have entered the MJ Achievement Awards 2014 and six exceptional legal teams have been whittled down as the finalists in the ‘Legal Services’ category.
The award recognises and rewards a council legal department which demonstrates exceptional value for money for the council through their contribution and innovation.

The concept of eastlaw was developed by NNDC’s legal team itself, to deliver services both in-house and on behalf of external clients. Aiming to combine the best aspects of public sector practice with the efficiency and dynamism of the private sector, eastlaw has been particularly successful in acting as the legal arm of NNDC’s drive to bring empty homes back into use, in setting up the coastshare group to help charities and other not-for-profit organisations, and in greatly exceeding the income target for its first year of operation.

North Norfolk Photographic Society
All members’ clubs have an AGM - North Norfolk Photographic Society held theirs on 16 April. Derek Cattermull continues as Chairman, but Judith Wells is the new Hon. Secretary. The club enjoys a continuing excellent membership, and remains financially sound, even after purchasing a new projector and screen for viewing projected digital pictures.
This kit was put to good use in the second half of the evening, when members were invited to submit a single image to be judged by the members present. A discussion followed, led by Bill Day, when each photograph was subjected to general comment and criticism.
The defined subject was ‘Action’ and there were boats in action on water, horses going over jumps, and somewhat to the surprise of some, two photos of military graves - ‘Killed in Action’ and ‘Lost in Action’.
Winner was Paul Keates with a photograph of two tiger cubs playing.
The Society meets on alternate Wednesday evenings at The Holt Community Centre.
Visitors are most welcome and further information can be found either from the website www.nnphotosoc.org, or from Secretary Judith Wells at 01328 710181.

Raising Funds for The Norfolk Bone and Joint Centre Appeal
Margaret Luckett-Gray, from Walcott, who has an undiagnosed, long term bone condition in her sacrum and who has continually supported the Orthopaedic Research Department at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital and Action Arthritis charity for many years, is organising a Magical and Variety Charity Show on Friday 20 June at 7.30pm at Davenport’s Magic Kingdom Theatre on Cromer Road in North Walsham (NR28 0NB) to raise funds and awareness for the new and unique Norfolk Bone and Joint Centre dedicated to researching and finding new treatments for chronic bone diseases including arthritis, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Mr Robert osteoporosis, joint Crawford with Margaret Luckett-Gray replacements, and Photo: Maurice Gray Paget’s disease etc. This is a joint venture between the University of East Anglia and the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital and will be completed later this year.
The appeal hopes to raise the final £1 million through donations from local communities with events and charitable trusts.
Margaret’s consultant orthopaedic surgeon, Mr Robert Crawford, said “the valuable work which will be carried out by the new Bone and Joint Centre will be a great asset to patients who will gain the benefits”.
International magician, Roy Davenport, has loaned Margaret his theatre for the evening and will also star in the show. Spring into action to save lives
NHS Blood and Transplant is asking readers not to forget hospital patients when they’re making plans to enjoy the better weather.
With more sunshine and longer days, everyone will be getting out and about more in their free time.
Derek Carr, Lead Donor Relations Manager for Anglia for NHS Blood and Transplant, said: “We’re asking people to spring into action this Spring. This time of year is an important time to give, as stocks are often more vulnerable around public holidays, when people are busy getting out and about or going away for breaks. Giving blood now and in the next few weeks will also help boost blood stocks before people turn their attention towards England in the Football World Cup. Please don’t forget about those hospital patients who rely on blood donors to save their lives or keep them well.
“We need more than 7,000 people to attend a blood donation session every day to collect the

amount of blood hospitals across England and North Wales need to treat patients. So go on, make an appointment to donate. All you need to do is visit www.blood.co.uk, find a local session and make an appointment.”
NHS Blood and Transplant needs people from all blood groups to donate, but O negative and B negative donors are particularly needed.
O negative or “universal” donors can help patients with a different blood group, vital in an emergency when there may not be time for an immediate blood grouping test.
B negative blood is also in demand as certain ethnic groups are more prone to certain diseases that require blood, like sickle cell anaemia and thalassemia and a higher proportion of these ethnic groups are Group B. B negative blood can be given to B negative or
B positive patients.
Conditions including cancer, thalassaemia and sickle cell anaemia, accidents and problems in childbirth can all lead to patients needing vital blood transfusions. Patients may need a one-off transfusion or weeks, months or even years of treatment.
In general, as long as you are fit and healthy, weigh over 7 stone 12 lbs (50kg) and are aged between 17 and 66 (up to 70 if you have given blood before) you should be able to give blood. If you are over 70, you need to have given blood in the last two years to continue donating.
For more information or to book an appointment visit www.blood.co.uk or contact 0300 123 23 23.

KELLING PROBUS CLUB
On Thursday 17 April at The Dales Hotel, Upper Sheringham, Chairman Tony O’Shea welcomed 23 Members, one guest and our speakers Cllr. Brian Hannah, Norfolk County Councillor for Sheringham and the Restorative Approaches Champion for Norfolk and Bethany Small, who is the Restorative Approaches Development Manager for NCC.
The term ‘Restorative Approach’ describes a different way of dealing with and resolving social conflict, and puts the repairing of the harm caused by offenders over and above the assigning of punishment.
One of the aims is to bring both the victim and the perpetrator together, for the perpetrator to gain a better understanding of the harm caused and for the victim to achieve ‘closure’. Everyone affected by a particular antisocial event should have the opportunity to express their feelings and views on how that can be put right, be that by apology, restitution or restoration. Cllr Hannah described how, when working in the Prison Service, his whole attitude to the treatment of offenders was changed when he discovered an autobiographical letter written by a young prisoner, describing his appalling childhood.
FreeAds
Bethany described the current work of the Restorative Approach teams at schools and Children’s Homes where minor antisocial offences have been prevalent, and said that considerable progress has been made, especially in community relationships.
Police call-outs to deal with conflicts has dropped by 19% and allowed the police to concentrate on more serious incidents, where there has been a 20% increase in Police action following a call-out. A vote of thanks was proposed by Terry Mobbs who wished the speakers success in their efforts to bring common sense into a society where domestic and public discipline has such little respect.
Dealing with Club business matters, the Chairman reported on a Committee Meeting held just prior to this lunch, and introduced a new member John Whittington who gave a brief account of his career.
Our next meeting will be at The Dales Hotel on Thursday 15 May when one of

The last Briston Organ How on Friday 25 April featured the amazing young organist Mob: (emergency contact) 07767 492456 Michael McAneny. This remarkable player thrilled the audience with a very randallselectrical@tiscali.co.uk mixed programme indeed - from a medley of Scottish dance music in the style of Jimmy Shand, we had Elgar's evocative 'Nimrod', Nola, the 'Black and White Rag' that was made famous by the late Winifred Atwell, the rousing 'RAF March Past', the fast and furious 'Peanut Polka', and even the sounds of a huge concert orchestra with the 'Sleeping Beauty Waltz'. The two hours whizzed by so quickly, and the show was a great success all round, as well as making £124 from the sale of refreshments and raffle tickets which was donated to the Copeman Centre's funds, as usual. The Air Ambulance stall made £50 for their fundraising too.
The next show is on Friday 30 May when the M4 will bring us top keyboard star Ian Griffin, all the way from Wales. Ian is a very warm character, and a very accomplished musician, and his multi keyboard and pedals set-up gives him the opportunity to play all styles of music for you - so super enjoyment is guaranteed! The show starts at 7.30pm, with doors open at 7pm. The Copeman Centre is a comfortable venue, with good views and acoustics, and has wide level access for our disabled visitors too. Tickets are available now, £6 each (pre-booked) with juniors (under 16) getting in at half price and our younger audience members will absolutely love this show!
To book telephone Carol now on 01263 860844 - major credit or debits cards are welcome. As well as the music, the home-made cakes in the interval break always go down well too!
Stay and enjoy coffee and a chat For more information Please telephone 01263 824236 Or 01263 826059

THE NORTH NORFOLK GARDENER FORECASTING THE WEATHER SEAWEED OR SCIENCE?
The weather is an enduring topic of interest to gardeners. For example, the weather in May can be particularly treacherous with frosts late in the month that are especially likely when night skies are clear - which is usually the case for most of the month - and when April has been drier than usual. Equally May can be hot and low in rainfall so gardeners need to know what to expect so they can plan when to plant tender plants and vegetables, when to water, when to apply weedkiller and how to plan their many other tasks. To help gardeners there are the professional weather reports on the radio and television of course but also many old wives tales and much folk lore which has been used over the centuries.
Meteorologists have the advantage of lots of complicated equipment, such as satellites and supercomputers to forecast the weather, however people have always used all the things around them as a guide. As well as looking at the skies, they also used the behaviour of
animals, birds and plants as clues to future weather patterns. Nowadays, people still disagree as to whether this weather lore is simply superstition or if it can in fact help in predicting the weather. However the ability of some plants and animals to respond to the many environmental indicators that can foreshadow an imminent change in weather conditions should not be dismissed out of hand.
For example it is thought that there are a number of flowers that you should look for if you want to know if it is going to rain. One of these is the Scarlet Pimpernel, which has been called the ‘poor man’s weather glass’, because the flowers open in sunny weather, but close tightly when rain is expected. Interestingly this common annual also acts as a sundial, opening its red petals at about 8am and shutting them at two in the afternoon. The petals of the Morning Glory also close when rain is expected. In coastal areas, seaweed is often used as a natural weather forecaster. Kelp shrivels and feels dry in fine weather, but swells and becomes damp if rain is in the air.
If we add in all the other observations, folk lore and superstitions which include such various
WOODGATE NURSERY GARDEN SHOW WEEKEND Woodgate Nursery in Aylsham hosts its popular Garden Show Weekend over the weekend of Saturday 17th & Sunday 18th May, 10am – 5pm, in aid of The East Anglian Air Ambulance.
Want to achieve a lush lawn, beautiful blooms or even weave your own Willow fence? Visitors can pick up tips, advice and inspiration on these topics and lots more from our garden designers, demonstrators and nursery staff.
Cast your vote for the best garden in show, as five local designers battle it out to take home the trophy. And enter raffles and prize draws to win up to £150 worth of gardening must-haves and vouchers to spend in-store.
A fun day for all the family, budding young gardeners can get up close and personal with birds of prey from The Seal and Bird Rescue Trust, take part in the Nursery Treasure Trail and go home with seed kits ready to start growing their own.
Norfolk craft companies will be selling handmade gifts. While the garden centre’s tearoom, Purdy’s, will be serving a delicious range of homemade cakes, light lunches, ice cream, teas and coffees throughout the weekend.
Last year’s event was a resounding success, with more than 3,000 people visiting, raising £648 for the charity. Entry is free, but donations to The East Anglian Air Ambulance are welcome.

clues as cows lying down, the timing of oaks and ash trees coming into flower, red sky at night and swallows flying high there seems to be no need for professional meteorologists. However at the next meeting of the Sheringham Horticultural Society members will hear from Jim Bacon, the well known weatherman about ‘Weather in the Garden’. Jim has been a meteorologist since 1968. In 1986 after working for the London Weather Centre he moved back to East Anglia to become a member of the Anglia Television weather team. This lasted until 1997 when Jim rejoined the Met. Office for a period before setting up Weatherquest, based at UEA, when the local Norwich Weather Centre was closed down.
The meeting will be held on 15 May in the Lighthouse Community Church, Sheringham commencing at 7.30 pm. Free to members with a charge of £3 for visitors. There will be a collection and all the proceeds will be donated to the East Anglia’s Children’s Hospice.
