Derek Little Retires from Morley Club Covering Sheringham, the Runtons, Holt and surrounding villages in association with the Cromer Times and North Walsham Times

After 25 years as greenkeeper at the Morley Club, Derek Little at the age of almost 84 has retired from his post, reports Eric Hayton. Surrounded by family and friends of the Bowls Club, Derek has called time and is to be replaced by three people who will keep the greens up to standard - Clive Matthews, Paul Hadley and Ian Pitts.

For virtually the whole of his life, apart from a sojourn with the National Service in the RASC, Derek, a true Shannock, has been involved with keeping grass in good condition - before the Morley he spent 38 years at Sheringham Golf Club.

David Dunkley, Chairman of The Morley Club presented Derek with a framed Honorarium certificate giving him free life membership to the Club and the bowls section and John Flowerdew, President of the Bowls Section presented him with tokens contributed to by all members. Children Malcolm, Beverley, Pauline and one of his six grandchildren, Ben, were there to see Derek presented with his certificate and many gift vouchers. Derek also has six great grandchildren.

What will you do now I asked him, “Nothing,” he replied, “except play bowls! I have truly enjoyed my time here - I have always been treated wonderfully by the members. I can only recommend the game - bowls is a pleasant, relaxing game that helps to keep you fit.”

The Patch makes good use of Clothworkers Foundation grant

A generous grant of £8,600 made to The Patch from the Clothworkers Foundation is now fully spent. It has been put to good use, and the things it has provided have added value to the experience gained by pupils from the three on-site Sheringham schools.

Matthew Smith, Director of The Patch and Business Manager at Woodfields School gives an idea of how the money has been spent, saying "The major outlay has been in a new, custom designed, fully accessible by everyone including wheelchair users, greenhouse which has had raised beds with wooden covers installed. This gives us double capacity storage when the beds are not in use. The money has also allowed us to build two extra raised beds, install seating in the sensory garden and buy various classroom resources to aid learning. Last, but still important, there was enough left over to buy guttering and water butts to harvest water off all our structures, which should help

to reduce our water bills!"

The investment has paid off - a lot of hard graft by staff and pupils resulted in a successful plant sale earlier this month, which added £85 to The Patch's coffers. All the plants were

sown, nurtured and potted on by pupils who benefit so much from their involvement in the project. The resultant selection of fruit, vegetable and ornamental plants displayed

On Wednesday 30 April, at the invitation of Simon Finch who is the owner of Voewood, we organised a fundraising entertainment evening at the country house.

About 100 people attended to hear Annett Jude on the piano and Susan Turner sing many lovely songs. We also had light refreshments and a raffle.

The evening was a great success and was really enjoyed by all those

outside Woodfields' Den (next to Tesco) attracted the attention of many local gardeners interested in acquiring a bargain.

Matthew allayed the fears of anyone who missed out on the sale on 10 May, saying "It's still not too late. There's time to take advantage of The Patch's bounty by visiting www.facebook.com/ThePatchSheringham, or make contact with us via email (pm@the-patch.co.uk) to enquire about purchasing plants".

He went on to thank everyone who contributed to this successful event. "We couldn't have achieved this without the grant from the Clothworkers Foundation, the hard work of people who raised the plants, and those who gave their time to sell them on the day. All monies raised will be used to enhance the facilities at The Patch, which brings enjoyment and learning to so many people".

attending, many of whom asked when the next one would be held. We raised £1448 for the charity. So it is a huge thanks to Mr Finch, the entertainers and all those who attended.

Mr Finch is planning another entertainment event 15-17 August which will mean a further donation to our funds, more information about this will follow nearer the date.

North Norfolk has some of the best beaches in the England - it’s official! Keep Britain Tidy names England’s 168 award-winning beaches for 2014

From Whitley Bay to Clacton, Margate to Torbay, England can now boast some of the best and cleanest beaches in the world. And North Norfolk has five of them, with prestigious Blue Flags for Sheringham, Cromer, Mundesley and Sea Palling beaches, and a Seaside Award for East Runton beach.

Last month Keep Britain Tidy announced the winners of the 2014 Blue Flag and Seaside Awards. In total 168 beaches received an award with 56 beaches gaining the Blue Flag and 112 picking up the Seaside Award. Twenty three of the beaches have received both awards.

Cllr Glyn Williams, North Norfolk District Council Cabinet Member for Leisure and Cultural Services, said, “We are delighted that with four Blue Flag resort beaches and one Seaside Award, North Norfolk offers one of the very best stretches of sandy coast in the country. This confirms the district as a wonderfully clean, tidy and safe place to live and to visit, with some of the best seaside resorts anywhere.”

Visitors to the newly awarded sites are not only assured of a great day out at some of our best loved beaches but can have confidence that their visit will be both safe and enjoyable with all beaches having to maintain high standards of management, cleanliness and safety.

For many people going to the beach also means a dip in the sea. The water quality at all award winning beaches meets the required European Union standards, with the water quality at Blue Flag beaches subject to even tougher tests, meeting the very highest international standards.

What a wonderful time to be in Cromer and what a great start to the season it’s been.

The Crab and Lobster Festival was superbly supported and it’s terrific to see holidaymakers heading for the beaches once again.

We’ve been very busy here at the Grove and of course my fantastic fishmonger John Davies has been flat out getting in the most amazing seafood for me. I’ve always had scallops on the menu and this is a twist on our usual presentation – but just as nice of course!

With Father’s Day looming do be quick and book your table – at the time of writing we have a couple left but they are sure to go quickly!

If you can’t get in for lunch then we are running the same menu in the evening; please give Dad a treat and bring him up to see us at the Grove. As always 01263512412 to book.

Yes You Can!

Marion Alabaster and Beryl Bellamy had never worn a wedding dress when they got married for one reason or another. They and a number of other local ladies thought it would be a nice idea to find out what it was like. So the ladies approached Julie Elvin at North Norfolk Formal Wear to see if it would be possible.

And it was...... one day last month Julie shut the shop and the ladies descended on the shop to try on the some of the lovely dresses in stock. The end result - 49 years (Marion) and 40 years (Beryl) after getting married they put on the ones they liked best and you can see the result in the photo alongside. “We would like to thank Julie for making our dreams come true - a smashing afternoon.”

Julie commented, “Such an unusual request, I couldn’t resist, and the ladies all had a lovely afternoon tryiing on dresses, not just wedding, from our large stock.”

Sheringham Methodist Ladies Association

We have continued to enjoy our meetings and were pleased to have Colin Seal and his grandson with us at the end of April. Colin, who is so very talented, showed us how he decorates the coaches and buses by "wrapping" them and he continues to brighten Sheringham in so many places with his wonderful painting assisted by his grandson. Together with the Primary School teachers he encourages the children to add colour and interest to our town and these wonderful works of art can be seen everywhere. Long may he continue his great work.

Our Social evening on 13 May was a Quiz, so well organised by Hazel, Judith and Margaret. It was a real fun evening with much laughter and everyone enjoyed it, even if we didn't know all the answers.

We are looking forward to welcoming Mike Crowe on 27 May and his talk will no doubt be very interesting. We are fortunate to have so many talented people in our town.

29 May we will be going to Cromer Pier theatre to see "Oliver" which promises to be a very good production. 10 June is our AGM - a very important meeting for every member to attend.

24 June we will have a Fish and Chip Supper before a pricing evening for the Flower Festival - please bring any toiletries and pretty bric-a-brac which we can sell

2 July we will be setting up our Stall for the Flower Festival

3, 4 and 5th July we will be helping the Flower Festival and will welcome help during these days.

Our meetings are held in the Methodist Church Hall, Cromer Road, Sheringham 7.45 for 8.pm and we are always pleased to welcome visitors.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

It is always very sad when we take in a cat because their owner has died. Having been well loved and cared for they must find it confusing to end up in a cat pen being cared for by strangers. One such cat is George, 8 years old, ginger and fluffy, who arrived recently. Obviously well loved, he has a lovely nature but is a little bit overweight. This gorgeous lad now has his food intake monitored and controlled and his vet is very impressed with the amount of weight he has lost on his last visit. We should point out that it is important not to lose the weight too quickly as this is not good for the cat and can cause other health problems.

When George goes to a new home his new owner will be given advice as to his diet to ensure he does not put the weight on again. Although essentially a lap cat, George would also benefit from a new home where he is encouraged to play, something which will also help keep him nice and slim. We do know that George does not like dogs but he is OK with children, providing they treat him with respect, so would make an ideal addition to many households.

with our friends and fellow cat lovers arriving from noon to enjoy the day. As well as the Hog Roast there will be the usual accompaniments, plus salads, a choice of dessert and a bar for liquid refreshment. As several of our supporters are vegetarians they too are catered for. However, beware the dreaded Car Park Attendant who will once again be on duty ready to fine anyone who disobeys his rules. Tickets must be purchased prior to the event and remain at ÂŁ10 each, available by either ringing 01692 535858 or emailing northwalshamcp@gmail.com. With our party tents in place we do not have to worry if it is not fine so why not come and join us at this popular event.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit cats.org.uk/northwalsham for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

If however you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher).

Update on Gracie from Remus Horse Sanctuary

Gracie one of the blind pregnant mares rescued by Remus Horse Sanctuary, gave birth to a foal on 21 May.

The foal - a white filly with one black ear and her mum are doing well. The foal may need to be hand reared as Gracie is not producing milk but the pair have bonded well. Gracie was very traumatized before she was rescued and very fearful of humans and even other horses. With much care and kindness she is getting better each day and has bonded with the other blind pregnant mare Holly. Holly is still waiting for her baby to be born.

If you want to catch up on all their progress or to know anything more about Remus and the animals you can go to www.facebook.com/ remushorsesanctuary or contact me Chris Parmenter on 01263 825615. Thanks to the kind Sheringham Independent readers who have offered to donate saleable items to our tabletop sale at the Lighthouse Community Church on 14 June.

BAFTA award winning actress returns to her old stomping ground

Gresham's School in Holt is delighted to hear that former pupil, Olivia Colman has won her third Bafta Award for best female actor in ITV’s crime series Broadchurch which was announced on Sunday 18 May. This award marks the actress’s third Bafta, after winning two TV Baftas last year for her roles in Twenty Twelve and Accused.

Norfolk-born Olivia who studied at Gresham’s recently returned to speak about her career and explain how the school’s drama department helped her discover something “she loved doing” - acting. Arguably one of Norfolk’s best exports, Olivia has become one of Britain’s biggest stars appearing alongside stars such as Meryl Streep, Ian McShane and David Tennant. Gresham’s is known for producing pupils who go on to carve out successful careers in TV and film. Actors, Ben Mansfield (Primeval), Sienna Guillory (Love Actually, Eragon), Miranda Raison (Spooks, Married Single Other) and Directors, Stephen Frears (Philomena) and Julian Jarrold (Kinky Boots). This year, Sixth Form students have received offers from the Arts Educational School in London, The National Youth Theatre and LAMDA. Alicia Stark, a Sixth Form student who met Olivia during her visit is delighted that she has just been offered a place at The National Youth Theatre. When asked

what had inspired Alicia she said, “Mr Hands, Head of Drama, is an incredible teacher and a real inspiration.” (Mr Hands was mentioned in Olivia’s BAFTA acceptance speech last year).

During Olivia’s visit to Gresham’s a ‘Question and Answer’ session took place where pupils were invited to ask questions of the actress. Olivia was asked what qualities she felt made a good actor, she said, “generosity and kindness”. She was refreshingly honest about the highs and lows of an acting career and said fame was one of the downsides to her work. However, she said she realised, “how lucky she was to be doing a job she really loved”. Her advice to pupils was “find a job you love”.

Mr Hands thanked Olivia for giving her time so generously to the school he said, “The qualities of generosity, kindness and humanity, which she has praised in the actors she most admires, are the very ones that make her a great actor. We are all very proud of her.”

Summer Rep at Sheringham Little Theatre

Sheringham Little Theatre runs a packed programme of drama, film and artistic events throughout the year. While its youth outreach work continues to give new opportunities to young people throughout the area, its famous Summer Repertory programme attracts theatre-goers from all across the country.

For years, summer repertory seasons flourished throughout the UK, bringing with them the chance for villages and towns to enjoy a varied selection of performances from a small group of professional actors.

Over time the practice declined, partly due to the time and effort it takes to organise and produce an entire series of plays in-house.

However, Sheringham Little Theatre’s Summer Repertory has survived, and today it remains one of the last theatrical seasons of its type in the entire country. This ensures that it receives

a great deal of interest from theatre lovers and seasonal tourists throughout its run; the surrounding community are extremely proud that their town is able to produce something which is so loved by so many.

Traditionally, Sheringham Little Theatre’s Summer Rep has lasted 10 weeks, with each play appearing twice within the programme. However, due to programming restrictions this year each play will only run once, making it more important than ever for people to catch it before it vanishes or sells out.

We open with FUNNY ABOUT LOVE, written by THERE’S A GIRL IN MY SOUP author Terence Frisby. Packed full of laughs and emotion, it’s especially exciting that Terence Frisby himself will be directing the production.

After that, there’s the unnerving psychological thriller KISS OF DEATH, followed by a

hilarious play from the master of farce himself: Ray Cooney’s CAUGHT IN THE NET. With the energy at full speed, we hit the darkly comic NEVILLE’S ISLAND, written by CALENDER GIRLS Dramatist Tim Firth, before finishing the season with the supernaturally satirical THE MYSTERY OF IRMA VEP. The combination of vampires, mummies and werewolves makes this a tour de force not to be missed as just two brave actors play all the parts.

All the money earned from this season will go directly towards sustaining the theatre for another year, ensuring that it can continue to offer a great range of programming to the people of North Norfolk.

Calling all potential volunteers who can spare some valuable time

The Sheringham Little Theatre is not only a wonderful local facility, it is also a delightful place to be involved with as a volunteer.

With the brilliant repertory season now imminent it is vital that we identify additional volunteer support, primarily to help run the evening bar at the theatre.

The theatre has recently undertaken a wonderful new facelift and is now a truly delightful place to serve as a volunteer. The evening bar is vital to the success of the theatre. The ideal situation is for pairs of volunteers to be able to afford a couple of hours of their valuable time for, perhaps, a session or two each month. Training is simple and easy to understand it is also enjoyable and highly satisfying. There is no financial reward of

course but there are benefits which enable volunteers to see productions without cost as a "reward" for giving the theatre some of their valuable time. Be assured that the involvement you can commit to will be a godsend to this wonderful north Norfolk gem of a theatre.

If you would like to talk through this request then please do not hesitate to make contact with myself on the number below - your contact will be so very welcome. I will welcome your call.

Mike Holmes - Sheringham Little Theatre volunteer contactable on 01263 824885 (the answerphone facility will be quickly responded to so leave your contact details)

Samantha, a new allotment holder, shares her experiences of getting, starting and maintaining an allotment …

I am a new allotment holder at the Weybourne Road Allotments. My nine year old daughter Sienna and I really wanted to keep chickens and grow our own fruit and vegetables, as a hobby for both of us to do together, as I work full time and Sienna has long school hours. It just gives quality time together and encourages Sienna to eat everything we grow.

I became aware of the allotments when I saw a Town Council sign in the town and excited I went straight home and rang the town hall

number. I spoke to a lovely lady called Sally, who informed me there were plots available. I went down to see Sally at the town hall looked over the tenancy agreement paid my money. I was informed that I needed public liability insurance and that I could do all this via the WRAHA. I then spoke to Malcolm Birtwell, treasurer of WRAHA a very helpful man who sorted out all my public liability, so promptly that in fact I was allowed on my allotment the very same day.

I've had my allotment for around two months now, when I took it over it had been rotivated fully, so after collecting some of the larger stones from my plot, I started on planting it out immediately. I am down on my allotment every single day, at least twice a day as I have ‘the girls’, by that I mean our six beautiful ex-battery hens to let out and care for.

I am growing everything known to man runner beans, broad beans, French beans and dwarf fruit trees, the list is endless. I am on my second sowing of carrots, as the first set failed. I think it was my error not theirs! All I can say is that everything looks good so far.

I have found everybody I have met on the allotments so far to be a great source of

information, everyone is willing to swap ideas and tips and plants or seeds and I feel I have been accepted into “The Sheringham Allotment Clan” very well.

I would recommend having an allotment without a doubt. It’s my piece of paradise as it gives me so much pleasure and a real sense of old fashioned community spirit. My only word of caution would be to make sure you take on the size plot that you can manage. Also remember there is a pest for everything you grow so be prepared to commence battle by any means. The only thing I think that could be improved on the site is I definitely would like to see onsite toilet facilities, and also a communal composting heap.

Samantha has done a fantastic job of starting from scratch on her allotment and is already enjoying her own eggs and produce from her ten rod plot. If anyone in Sheringham would like an allotment plot simply contact Sally, deputy clerk at Sheringham Town Council on 01263 822213 or email shercouncil@btconnect.com to discuss details and terms. There is only a small waiting list at the moment and the town council is keen to let plots as soon as they become available.

Norfolk Wherry Brass Race Night success sets the Band off on the Gallop to Cheltenham Finals

Norfolk Wherry Brass, a local Brass Band based in Neatishead, is delighted with the support received for our recent fundraising event organised to help the band in representing the London and Southern Counties Region at the National Brass Band Championships in September. As the venue for the finals is Cheltenham Race Course the band organised a ‘Race to Cheltenham Night’ and hosted the event in fancy dress which raised over £1000 towards expenses for the trip.

Thanks are extended to the businesses which sponsored the races including Scarborough Hill Hotel, Wayford Bridge Inn, The White Horse Inn Neatishead, Indulge and Simply Massage in Barton Turf, Three Cottages Fish and Chip Shop and Pamper Nails of North Walsham, The Bank Restaurant Sheringham and Rocket Cafe Cromer, the Lighthouse Inn at Walcott and Davenports Magic Kingdom. 14

Car Parking Proposal by Local Conservatives

After success in reducing the costs of the tidal surge to under £600,000 through consistent and continued negotiation with the Government, Conservatives on North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) have called for council officers to produce a report which will examine options for boosting local businesses by laying the foundations for the introduction of a 30 minutes free parking period between 9am and 9.30am and the removal of the evening charges in all North Norfolk car parks.

Your local Conservatives on North Norfolk District Council are doing all they can to promote and encourage tourism and businesses. At a time of great austerity they have supported residents by reducing inefficiency, cutting the number of senior managers, freezing council tax and all the while fighting to maintain front-line services.

Councillor Rhodri Oliver, North Norfolk District Council Deputy Leader and Portfolio

Holder for Corporate Assets said “We are delighted to finally be in the financial position to bring forward these options for examination.

Car parking has been a serious issue for residents and tourists alike and while it significantly subsidises other key services that we provide to the public we feel it is vital that we take this opportunity to help our businesses and communities. North Norfolk must remain competitive as the recovery begins and I hope this will be a real boost to enterprise and residents alike”.

Councillor Tom FitzPatrick Conservative Group Leader and Leader of North Norfolk District Council said “We were very keen to consider introducing these changes at the time of the District Council's Budget in February, but in view of the huge uncertainty over funding following the need to dig into the Council's financial reserves following the severe damage caused by last December’s

tidal surge and storm, it was not deemed prudent to consider changes until the likely cost of the damage to the Council became clearer.

I am pleased that we are now in a position where we can look at making these positive changes for the benefit of both businesses and residents. I can see the proposed half hour free period of being particularly useful for encouraging people who just want to make some quick purchases to use their local shop”.

Councillor Russell Wright Portfolio Holder for Business and Economic Development and Tourism said “I welcome these proposals which will provide further help to the economy of North Norfolk and encourage people to use our local businesses. The proposed removal of the evening charge will encourage people to use businesses and facilities near our car parks”.

Norfolk MPs will make their offices ‘dementia friendly’

All nine Norfolk MPs have announced that their constituency offices will become “dementia friendly”. Over the next few weeks MPs’ constituency staff will be attending free Dementia Friends training sessions in Norfolk run by the Alzheimer’s Society, to learn how they can support people in their communities who may have dementia.

Back in 2010, there were estimated to be over 13,000 people affected by dementia here in Norfolk. By 2030, that figure is expected to rise to 24,000. The dementia-related cost to our health and care system here in Norfolk was last year estimated at £115m, and 74% of those costs in the health sector were linked to acute hospital admissions – which are often preventable.

Alzheimer’s UK and Public Health England have launched a national campaign to recruit a million dementia friends across the country by 2015. The “Dementia Friends” initiative aims to show that the whole of our society has a part to play in tackling one of the biggest health issues facing England.

Last month Norfolk announced the launch of its own county-wide Dementia Friendly Community programme, led by the Norfolk and Suffolk Dementia Alliance. There are 16 community dementia hubs being set up across the county, which will help co-ordinate community activities locally to support people with dementia, and provide training to businesses supported by Age UK.

Willie Cruickshank, Director of the Norfolk and Suffolk Dementia Alliance, commented “It is fantastic to see all nine of our MPs supporting the drive to make Norfolk a more dementia friendly county. Historically, dementia has been one of those health conditions that people have always been reluctant to talk about which has led to us living in a society that is often unsure, embarrassed and even frightened about how to engage and communicate with people exhibiting the symptoms of a condition that is so prevalent that it affects one in three of us over the age of 65.

“By our MPs committing themselves and their

PHILIP INCE

staff to becoming dementia friendly, they are leading the way in a social movement that is spreading right across the county aimed at improving awareness and understanding of the most feared of all health conditions. I hope the people Norfolk will follow this example and find out more about the condition.”

Norman Lamb MP said “The various forms of dementia are one of the greatest challenges facing our society over the coming decades. Nationally the Government is doubling investment in research into treatments for dementia and ways of improving care for those with the condition.

“But here in our constituencies MPs, local businesses and other organisations can also play an important role. With support and help from those around them, people can continue to live active and fulfilled lives with dementia. I am delighted that MPs in Norfolk are taking the initiative in exploring what they can to support people in their constituencies with dementia. My staff have already attended the Dementia Friends training, and we found it incredibly useful.”

The Sheringham Trawler Netted

Mr Norman Lamb MP officially opened Sheringham’s newest Fish and Chip Restaurant and Take-Away on Saturday 24th May at 5.15pm.

The new business is the brainchild of Lisa and Andy May who currently run Albert’s Fish Bar in Holt where Norman Lamb is a regular customer.

Lisa and Andy May have worked in the fish and chip shop trade for 26 years, Lisa first started working with her father while she was still at school, helping out in the holidays in his mobile fish and chip van. Her parents having built the daily round up from scratch. Their fame soon spread and they were approached by the owners of Kelling Heath Holiday Park and offered the franchise for the new on site fish and chip shop. Known as “Kelly’s Take Away they ran this and the mobile van for several years before concentrating their efforts on a then thriving business. Lisa said, “While still at school I was committed to the business and I knew that’s where my future was going to be.

After many successful years at Kelling Heath Lisa’s father purchased Albert’s Fish Bar in Holt a small well established chip shop that needed a new start. Lisa and her father worked side by side for the first eight years, and when

her father retired Lisa and her husband Andy took over the business and with a new ten year lease agreed with the landlord they set to work and soon built up a loyal following of customers.

When Andy and Lisa heard about the shop in Sheringham they did not hesitate, larger premises would allow them to expand and develop the business again and they both agreed that there was no better place to do that than in Sheringham. Lisa and Andy wanted their new business to be more than a fish and chip shop and set out to create a fun experience as well as providing a quality offer at affordable prices The Sheringham Trawler was born from an idea by Andy May who first visualised the trawler frontage. Customers will enter a shop packed full of images of Sheringham, the North Norfolk Railway and the sea

creating an interesting and colourful place to enjoy fish and chips cooked, the traditional way in beef dripping.

The forty seat restaurant and take-away will be open seven days a week offering customers a lot more than fish and chips. A special pensioner meal deal and children’s portions available for every dish.

Andy said, “We have so many people to thank it would be impossible to mention them all but we would certainly like to mention our two families and daughter Bex who have all been so supportive. The very many talented and skilled trades people who have all worked so hard to deliver such a brilliant shop and restaurant which we are certain will be a hit with all our customers

Visitors flock to the fifth Crab & Lobster Festival

Over the weekend of the 17 & 18 May a record number of people flocked to the fifth annual Cromer and Sheringham Crab & Lobster Festival.

The sun shone all weekend and matched the sunny spirit of the Festival which saw people turn out in their droves to a crowded Cromer on the Saturday and into a sunny Sheringham on the Sunday.

Local businesses have reported an upsurge in trade with local B&Bs, hotels and caravan parks reporting full houses and return visits specifically for the Festival. Many local businesses have reported one of their busiest weekends of the year.

Festival Chairman Tony Shipp said “it was a fantastic weekend and the weather was perfect making it a bumper festival in both towns. Each venue provides the Festival with a unique atmosphere.” A family visiting the Festival and staying locally said “It is our first visit and we love it. I don’t suppose you know the dates for next year?”

With a host of events, this year’s Festival offered activities and entertainment for all the family across the weekend. The Festival kicked off in style with a sell-out Opening Concert on Cromer Pier on Friday night. Compered by the fabulous Olly Day the audience were treated to finely-crafted folk music French group La Grosse Erreur, a beautiful display by Marlene’s School of Dance, comedy from Nigel ‘Boy’ Syer and the buoyant sea-side sound of The Sheringham Shantymen.

The weekend saw the Festival’s now traditional mix of superb seafood, scintillating entertainment, film, seafood competitions, traditional seafaring craft demonstrations, local food and craft stalls and the Festival’s Cookery Theatre.

This year the Cookery Theatre played host to an array of demonstrations by local and not-solocal chefs and master seafood specialists. Audiences were shown how to make the most of our local, scrumptious seafood across the two days. Organiser Nick Samujlik said “the demonstrations this year offered a mix of traditional, oriental and educational demos that got the audience’s mouths watering and their taste buds tingling”. In Cromer this was hosted in a marquee on Evington Lawns alongside a bar from Woodforde’s which included the Crab & Lobster Festival ale.

Scores of people queued up to take part in the Crab Dressing Competitions hosted by Julie Davies and accompanying this there were demonstrations from local fishermen on the art of net braiding and pot making.

Children at the Festival were entertained by Punch & Judy shows, craft events and activities across local museums. Adults and children alike were fascinated by the aquarium of live

year, East Of England Co-op, as well as Cromer Town Council, FLAG and Blyth & Wright of Sheringham.”

This year the Festival hosted its first ever crab and lobster Paella evening in the Festival marquee in Cromer together with live music and a bar.

The paella, which was cooked by Head Chef at The Grove Charlie Hodson, with assistance from About with Friends and Norwich City College students, sold over 200 portions in 20 minutes. Crowds remained at the Festival marquee to enjoy music headlined by The Castaways.

Events continue until mid-August with the Seafood Trail and the Festival’s Bootiful Boat Art Trail where over 70 decorative boats are located across the two towns in shop windows and outdoor spaces. A leaflet containing both trails can be picked up at Cromer or Sheringham Tourist Information centres. The Seafood Trail has been attracting avid seafood followers since it launched at Easter.

The Festival’s World Pier Crabbing Championships will take place on Sunday 24 August 2014 when the Festival hosts its annual charity auction on Cromer Prom. Tony Shipp said “I look forward to meeting many of you again on August Bank Holiday Sunday for the World Pier Crabbing Championships and the Bootiful Boat Auction.”

Charlie from The Grove said “It’s been a great honour to be involved in the Festival this year and we very much look forward to this being the start of a great relationship.”

The Festival, which has been hailed as the most successful so far, is enthusiastically looking forward to 2015 with the dates provisionally announced as 15 – 17 May 2015. As one family said of the Festival “We've come each year, we love it and this is certainly the best yet”.

Chairman Tony Shipp said “I would like to thank my small but hard working committee without whom the weekend would not be possible. To those members of the Cromer Lifeboat Crew, who worked tirelessly all weekend in both towns and to all our volunteers, chefs, stallholders and visitors. I would like to thank all involved in both towns for their support and hard work, particularly our main sponsor for this

Have you considered joining a Probus club?

I have been writing reports on behalf of Cromer and Sheringham Probus Club for two full years. My telephone number always appears for anyone interested in joining or visiting the club but in the last year I have received absolutely no enquiries.

This is not a desperate plea for members – we actually have more active members now than a year ago – but I firmly believe there are many men in the area who would enjoy the club, although for some reason they do not get in touch. By definition, I can only guess at why that is, however I must assume that I have either failed to provide enough information or the idea of ringing me is off-putting, or both. In the hope of addressing these issues, I have compiled some answers to “Frequently Unasked Questions”:

Who are you? I am the Lunch Secretary for the club and my name is Dave Vickery. I have been a member of the club since I first came to the area 4 years ago and I made contact by ringing the number which appeared in a paper, so I appreciate that potential callers will want to hear a friendly and welcoming voice. Who are the members? Men who are retired or nearly-retired from a wide range of occupations, including finance, engineering, the armed services, the law, the church, education, transport ……

What is the age range? Current members range from 56 to 90+ but there are no

prescribed limits.

What is the club’s purpose? Entirely social. It provides an environment for making and meeting friends and hearing informative and entertaining talks, mostly with local themes.

When do you meet? Lunchtime on the first Tuesday of each month, except January.

Where do you meet? The Links Hotel at West Runton.

What happens at the meetings? We chat in the bar, have lunch and then listen to a speaker. There is usually some club business to deal with but it rarely takes more than a couple of minutes.

Would anyone talk to me? You will be given a named contact for when you arrive for the first time. They will introduce you to others and be at your table for lunch.

How would I remember people’s names? Everyone has a name badge.

Is it very formal? No. Dress code is jacket and tie but there are no restrictions on who you sit with for lunch.

Can I just turn up? No. Simply because we have to notify the hotel of numbers in advance.

How much does it cost? £15 per year for membership and £15 for each meeting, including the talk and 3-course lunch plus coffee.

Who runs the club? A small committee elected from within the membership.

Is the club part of a wider organisation? No. There are Probus clubs across this country and in others, but each Probus club is completely independent and runs itself.

Are all Probus clubs the same? Not exactly, because they set their own rules, however the purpose is generally consistent. Obviously, meeting days vary so that can affect the choice of club.

Are there any activities other than the regular lunch meetings? There are occasional outings which are usually run in conjunction with another local club.

Does the club do fund-raising activities? No.

Would I have to join immediately? No. You are welcome to come along as a visitor until you make your decision.

Can members bring guests? Absolutely. This is how we get most of our new members, but they do not have to be prospective members.

Are female guests allowed? Sometimes. We traditionally invite female guests to our May meeting, the December Christmas lunch and on outings.

How do I get in touch? Ring me (Dave Vickery) on 01263 824306. Alternatively, ring the Club Secretary (Gordon Hatchett) on 01263 826881 or e-mail candsprobus@hotmail.co.uk if you prefer.

KELLING PROBUS CLUB

On Thursday 15 May, at The Dales Hotel, Upper Sheringham, Chairman Tony O’Shea welcomed 19 members and a guest, and announced that Bill Day’s kind offer to take over the post of Hon. Treasurer had been gratefully accepted. Our speaker, one of our own members, Dr. Mike Bennett, presented “An update on the Tunny code-breakers at Bletchley Park”.

Although Bletchley Park was set up in 1938 to decode Enigma messages, its major contribution was the breaking of the Tunny code used in teleprinter tape messages transmitted by radio. A catastrophic mistake by a German operator in Athens allowed his message to be decoded, but it was the sheer brilliance of some members of staff who deduced the form of the encryption device, which allowed them to design and build a model to decrypt the tapes. Newly-developed electronic systems were used to build the Heath Robinson and later Colossus, to accelerate the decryption process.

Two examples of vital intelligence gleaned in this way were the battle plan for “Operation Citadel”, which enabled the Russians to defeat the final German assault in 1943, and the confirmation that the Allied deception plans for the DDay landings in 1944 had been successful, thereby shortening WW2 by at least two years. Ken Murray thanked Mike for his presentation, commenting that so few of us realise the magnitude of the contribution made to the war effort by Bletchley Park, and regretting that so few of its staff have been awarded honours.

18

The Chairman reported that we have been invited to attend a joint meeting with Holt Probus Club on 6 November, when Roy Davenport will speak on the “Magic Kingdom” of North Walsham - 10 members said they would like to attend. Secretary Ken Murray said he was looking at two possible outings, Great Yarmouth (Time & Tide Museum) and Cambridge (guided tour). Our next meeting will be at The Dales Hotel on Thursday`19 June when Rose Peasgood will talk about East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH). If you would like to join us for lunch, please call Bill Day on 01263 826083.

Chelsea inspired Garden Show raises £1840 for the East Anglian Air Ambulance

A Garden Show in Aylsham has raised £1840 for the East Anglian Air Ambulance with over 3000 visitors enjoying the glorious weather over the weekend at Woodgate Nursery.

Inspired by this week’s RHS Chelsea Flower Show, the Woodgate Nursery Garden Show showcases local companies’ gardening skills, with visitors voting for their favourite garden design.

This year’s winner was the ‘Wind in the Willows’ garden, using a mixture of wild flowers, Iris and pond plants to create a garden full of colour and interest – designed by the Woodgate Nursery team.

In second place was Sue Bell Garden Designs of Little Melton for her ‘Time for Tea’ garden which had a more modern look with paving, box hedging and a mix of Heuchera and Salvia. Followed by Mark Sapwell and his ‘Woodland Walk’ a design of shade loving plants and native woodland trees. Kevin Myhill created a

fantasy garden which proved a real attraction for the children with his hand built fairy castle complete with moat, fairies and crocodiles!

The Show attracted thousands of visitors from around the county, including budding young gardeners who took part in willow weaving demonstrations and a children’s treasure trail, while Purdy’s Tea Room served refreshments outside to visitors enjoying music from the talented Claire Lawrence.

- JUNE NEWS

Our last meeting when Jim Bacon, the well known meteorologist, visited Sheringham was a great success. We all now know a lot more about the processes behind the weather forecasts and the enormous computer power which allowed increasingly accurate forecasts for up to six days. However, despite his scientific training Jim did not entirely dismiss the weather folk lore and explained how red sky at night could indeed mean that good weather was on the way.

There were sixteen visitors and, together with their entry fees, the proceeds from the raffle and the sale of refreshments a three figured cheque was given to Jim for the East Anglia Children’s Hospice. Many thanks to Blythe and Wright, Beeston Mini Market, Dawn Fresh, Edgefield Nurseries, Coastal Stoves, Starlings and Chris Wright for generously donating raffle prizes.

Our next meeting is Tuesday, 17 June when we are hosting the Annual Quiz against Cromer and Hoveton Gardening Clubs. Please let me know if you wish to take part but have not already put your name down. If you cannot make up a full team of four you will still be very welcome and we will make up teams on the night. Felbrigg Hall –

a unique volunteering experience

Felbrigg Hall, a jewel in the National Trust’s collection in Norfolk, urgently needs more volunteers to act as room guides particularly during the summer months when we open 7 days a week. Year on year visitor numbers are rising – over 100,000 last season.

As a volunteer myself I was initially worried about learning about the Hall and its history but my worries soon disappeared after shadowing an existing guide for a few sessions before taking on a room on my own. The NT provides excellent room guide folders which will help you answer any questions you might be asked and remember that you will generally know more than any visitor. However through interaction you can always learn from some of the visitors thus extending your own knowledge.

The opportunity to interact with the public and help them to have a wonderful day out is very rewarding and you can choose to work morning or afternoon shifts to suit your availability. Very soon you will feel part of the friendly team of volunteers some of whom have decades of experience at Felbrigg but always welcome new guides who will hopefully provide the next generation of volunteers.

Felbrigg offers a unique volunteering opportunity and although there is no direct financial reward you will receive a National Trust car parking sticker (useful if you want to visit other NT car parks locally), a mileage In association with www.sheringhamdeals.co.uk

for them at that altitude, staying in tents and remote villages to collect seeds of rare flowers and hopefully find new plants not yet in cultivation. Although plant and seed collecting worldwide has been strongly discouraged in recent years and there is much protective legislation the party are going to great lengths to do things properly and legally with the permission of the appropriate authorities.

The party will consist of Dr Paul Bygrave, proprietor of Forde Abbey Plant Nursery in Dorset, Ray Brown of Plant World Seeds and David Howard, Head Gardener to Prince Charles at Highgrove House for ten years. Lhakpa, a highly qualified Sherpa guide completes the brave quartet. Their targets include new irises, poppies begonias and aquilegias

For my sponsorship I will get an account of the expedition and a description of their finds and most interestingly some of the seeds. When the party returns they will clean and package all seeds collected and post out allocations to shareholders in October and November 2014. I should be getting 25 packets of seed, mainly alpine plants, which I will then be challenged to germinate and grow.

I will publish the results of this expedition in due course and list the seeds that I received and if any readers are interested in sharing any of the seeds they will be most welcome.

Gifts Again

Mob: 07900 252168

Written by Miranda Marshall – Partner at Hayes + Storr

This is the third article in a series about making gifts.

After all the dire warnings in my last two articles, I would like to focus on some of the positive aspects of making gifts.

There are two popular sayings which quickly spring to mind on the subject of lifetime giving: ‘There are no pockets in shrouds.’ and ‘It is better to give with warm hands.’ No one has yet found a way to take the worldly goods with them when they die; although the Egyptian Pharaohs tried their best. The pleasure of giving is often considered to be greater than that of receiving. Benefiting from a gift sooner rather than later can alleviate financial need at the time when it is truly required. It can also allow a younger person to get their foot on the first rung of the housing ladder before it gets pulled up and forever out of reach.

There are other slightly more technical reasons than just the rosy glow of benevolence.

From an Inheritance Tax planning point of

view, provided of course that the giver is left with enough to continue their standard of living and to provide for a ‘rainy day’, it is the usual mantra of ‘Give as much as you can, as soon as you can and live as long as you can.’ that applies. Generally, gifts made more than seven years before death pass to the recipient Inheritance Tax free. In handing over assets during one’s life there can also be savings in the cost of administering the estate following a death and it can reduce the unavoidable delays of Probate in processing an estate on death.

In some carefully assessed and planned circumstances, the need to sell assets to pay for care fees can be avoided. The assets given may, in much the same way, not be taken into account if the person has to undergo meanstesting for benefits or publicly-funded services.

Should the person making the gift lose mental capacity and no Power of Attorney (Enduring or Lasting) be in place, it can avoid the expense and delay in applying to the Court of Protection for a Court Order to manage, sell or otherwise deal with the asset.

Attorneys are often surprised to discover that it is usually not straight-forward and often not even possible for them to make gifts on behalf of the person who appointed them. Gifts of a ‘seasonal nature’ are permitted without Court authority but otherwise the Court’s approval to such gifts must be obtained in order for those gifts to be valid. It is difficult, expensive and slow to obtain the Court’s approval to make larger giftson behalf of an attorney. “This article aims to supply general information, but it is not intended to constitute advice. NORTH NORFOLK PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY

Some 30 members of the North Norfolk Photographic Society attended a three-way photography 'battle' on 21 May, in which the NNPS successfully competed against the Lutterworth Photographic Society and King's Lynn & District Camera Club.

Dave Saunders, an independent judge from Lowestoft, judged the battle which consisted of 60 images (20 images per club). The images covered a wide variety of subjects, including portraits, still-life, wildlife, natural history, landscapes, creative, abstract and sport.

Prior to awarding scores the judge commented on all of the images, with particular advice on composition, and the use of lighting to portray form and shape. Of the 60 images in the battle, two were awarded full marks of 20/20. One, entered by King's Lynn and titled Fork Lift', was an imaginative still-life photograph of an egg supported by two forks, and the other was 'High Tea' by Judy Knights of the NNPS. 'High Tea' was a beautifully lit landscape of rolling hills and grazing sheep.

That the clubs were extremely evenly matched may be seen from the final scores which were: North Norfolk Photographic Society - 335 Lutterworth Photographic Society - 333 King's Lynn & District Camera Club - 331

A vote of thanks to Dave Saunders, on behalf of the NNPS, was given by Mr Bill Day.

Meetings of the North Norfolk Photographic Society are held on alternate Wednesdays from 7:30 pm in the Holt Community Centre. For further details please contact the NNPS Secretary, Judith Wells at secretary@nnphotosoc.org Sheringham Independent 393 June 7th 2014

Dear Margaret,

This year it was looking like a bumper year for wild flowers. Highways said they had listened and left the road verges alone and only started to cut the parts we need to see at junctions at the end of May. On the way to work one Friday morning I even spotted wild poppies along the Aylsham Road in North Walsham - a real pleasure to see. Sadly by home time these had all been cut down even though these were not causing any visibility problem. A complete waste of time and money, and now other areas have had the same. Even some of the high banks. Of course foot ways and park flower beds need doing, but the wild areas need to be left at this time of year. You only need to get out of the car and look over the bank or hedge to notice the lack of wildness in our countryside. For many miles the roadside is the only wild parts we have. We are told by the county council there is no money so our recycling centre will start charging or not open on weekdays, but they have plenty of money to chop wild flowers down in the summer - the very time butterflies and bees need them. It looks a mess. Why is this being done? It makes NO environmental or economic sense. Yours sincerely, David G Spencer Southrepps

Dear Margaret,

I am attempting to produce a ¨Gazette¨ for the ’40s weekend in Sheringham covering the period from 1940 until 1949 inclusive, not just the war. If any of your readers has any material which they would be willing to have used in this magazine please could they let Mike Crowe c/o Sheringham Museum have it or hand it in to The Little Theatre. If they would be willing to talk about this period of their life, please could they let me have their name, address and telephone number and I will contact them. Information from residents of Weybourne and Holt would also be much appreciated. Yours sincerely, Mike Crowe

NHS Blood and Transplant is asking new and existing donors to give blood and be part of the Greatest Team in the World to help maintain healthy blood stocks for patients throughout the busy summer months.

The number of people donating blood often falls during the summer and this year’s football World Cup may present even more of a distraction.

Jon Latham, Assistant Director for Donor Services and Marketing at NHS Blood and Transplant, said “We want to remind everybody that the need for blood will continue even when their attention turns to the beautiful game. While the overall need for blood within the NHS has been reducing, thanks to improvements in clinical practice and our work with hospitals, we still need more than 7,000 people to attend a blood donation session every day. Voluntary donors enable us to collect the amount of blood hospitals across England and North Wales need to treat patients.

“So if you have an appointment coming up in June or July please keep it. And if you have time to donate, why not book an appointment to give blood and save lives? We particularly need our O Rh Negative and B Rh Negative blood donors and our platelet donors to keep attending.

“The Greatest Team in the World is never complete, so if you’ve never given blood before come and join us. We always have spaces in our squad as we continually need new donors to replace our former team members who can no longer donate for reasons such as illness or pregnancy. So come on, why not get off the bench and join the Greatest Team in the World?”

Every blood donation saves or improves the lives of up to three people, and if each member of the England World Cup squad gave blood, they would save or improve the lives of up to 69 people. In general, as long as you are fit and healthy, weigh over 7 stone 12 lbs (50kg) and are aged between 17 and 66 (up to 70 if you have given blood before) you should be able to give blood. If you are over 70, you need to have given blood in the last two years to continue donating.

For more information or to book an appointment visit www.blood.co.uk or call 0300 123 23 23.

THANK GOD FOR DADS

"A very short service for young children and their families, followed by tea for everyone" Following our successful launch on Mothering Sunday St Peter's Church is inviting everyone to come along for another Tea Service on Father's Day. There will be a very short act of worship with lots of activity for little people; songs, story and actions.

We will all be encouraged to think of the special things that dads do for us and to say thank you to them and to God. Afterwards tea will be provided, with a chance to meet each other and to chat as we enjoy our food.

Assistant Curate the Reverend Lynn Chapman said: "Although the Church does not traditionally keep Father's Day, in the way that Mothering Sunday has been kept, we thought

that the dads should not be left out. Hopefully more families will come along and join us this time as we worship together in a relaxed setting, with everyone taking part."

The flexible layout of St Peter's Church allows for lots of space and a comfortable place to sit. Many families now come along to our weekly "Noah's Ark" sessions and the Tea Service is a chance to continue that contact with the church, allowing families to come to worship together.

The Tea Service takes place on Sunday 15th June at 4:00pm in St Peter's Church, Sheringham

Local campaigners celebrate victory in campaign to improve Sunday rail service in North Norfolk

Councillor Eric Seward and North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb are celebrating victory, as Greater Anglia announced that their enhanced Summer Sunday service would in future be run throughout the year.

Eric Seward said “This change will be a valuable boost for towns and villages served by the Bittern Line. From 18 May this year, they will benefit from the enhanced summer Sunday service all year round, with six extra trains in each direction every Sunday. This will be valuable for local residents and tourists alike, and I know from speaking to residents here in North Walsham how many people support this change.”

Norman Lamb said “We have been pressing Network Rail to agree to the timetabling changes that would facilitate the enhanced service throughout the year. After we secured this commitment a few days ago, I am delighted that Greater Anglia has responded so promptly in confirming that they will run this improved service throughout the year.”

Join us for East Anglia’s Biggest Birthday Party

East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH) is inviting the people of East Anglia to join them in celebrating the first birthday of HRH Prince George of Cambridge by holding a birthday party in his honour on Tuesday 22 July.

The charity, which has HRH The Duchess of Cambridge as its Royal Patron, is encouraging as many schools, groups, companies and individuals as possible to hold a Royal birthday party on or around Tuesday 22 July. Party organisers will be encouraged to invite friends and colleagues to attend parties and make a donation to EACH.

Her Royal Highness, The Duchess of Cambridge, became Royal Patron of EACH in January 2012 and has provided the charity

with many great benefits including raising awareness and understanding of services, boosting the media profile and inspiring people to raise funds.

Camilla Haycock, EACH Fundraising Development Manager, said “We’re hoping as many people as possible across East Anglia will hold a birthday party on this special day, or as near to the day as they can, to help us celebrate the first birthday of the Prince. It’s a great excuse to have a bit of fun with party games and cake while raising funds for an important local charity.

“Tuesday 22 July is really near to the end of term for most schools in East Anglia and we think it would be a terrific way for children

to have a bit of fun just before the school holidays, making party hats and playing games. Companies and organisations can also get into the party mood by holding a cake sale.

“It would be exciting to try and create some sort of record in East Anglia for the most people attending a birthday party on a day and we would love to hear from anyone who is interested in joining us.

“The birth of Prince George raised thousands of pounds for EACH with fans making donations in lieu of buying and sending gifts and we hope we can inspire people to raise funds again.”

Details about how to get involved can be found at www.each.org.uk/biggestbirthday

North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) is set to deliver an exciting programme of Health and Fitness Roadshows to primary schools across North Norfolk.

The programme aims to ensure that every child becomes more active more often and ultimately achieves life-long participation in activity. Sessions are already taking place in 14 schools across the district, where NNDC staff have been delivering hour long practical and theory sessions to help children improve their fitness, and encouraging them to share their learning with parents and carers.

Children who take part are given workbooks to complete during the five week programme. They also receive activity cards and are encouraged to complete 20 or more activities during the programme. Children who complete 20 or more activities within five weeks are rewarded with a free swim pass for use at Victory Swim and Fitness Centre in North Walsham or Splash Leisure and Fitness Centre in Sheringham.

NNDC’s Deputy Leader, Rhodri Oliver said “We are delighted to be

launching this programme which is specifically targeted to primary schools in the area. The sessions have been designed to encourage children to develop a positive attitude to their health and well-being from an early age and to help them learn about how their body works. We’ve already received feedback to indicate that the children taking part are really enjoying the sessions they’ve taken part in.”

Northrepps Primary School Head teacher, Mrs Angie Hamilton, said “The children have enjoyed the activity. They started with a bleep test and were amazed at one of the boys who reached 11! They are all focussed on improving their fitness and getting healthier. Having a goal to beat is spurring them on even more. The hands-on elements of the practical sessions have been wonderful. And especially memorable has been examining the fat content in food.”

Any school wishing to get involved and to understand more about how the programme works should contact Wyn Nurse by email wyn.nurse@north-norfolk.gov.uk or call 07795 265671.

Sheringham Ramblers Visit the Peak District

A group of Sheringham Ramblers recently enjoyed five splendid days of companionship and exceptional rambling in the glorious Peak District of Derbyshire. Whilst rain dominated most nights the five days were completely rain free and primarily sunny and warm - the group had wonderful walks along the iconic Monsal Trail, the equally iconic Curbar Edge and on the first evening a short walk to Solomon's Temple high up over Buxton - Buxton was the groups base for their holiday. The picture was taken during that particular walk.

before setting out across lush meadows and wonderful undulating scenery and a return to our cars.

Evenings were convivial and happy occasions in an assortment of hostelries where weight balances were adjusted accordingly!

The wonderful Tissington Trail was another all day walk during most of which we were accompanied by Sir Richard Fitzherbert Bt, the owner of Tissington Hall who gave us all a real insight into the trials and tribulations of being

the owner of a National Treasure property and his Estate as a whole - Sir Richard is a long time friend of Sheringham Ramblers stalwart Mike Holmes. A tour of the lovely Family home was enjoyed greatly by all the Ramblers
