World Scout Jamboree for Andrew and Alex

Alex Ghanbouri and Andrew Mitchell are both students in Year 11 at Sheringham High School and have been selected to be part of the World Scout Jamboree to be held in Japan in 2015. They were selected from 47 Scouts to be part of the 18 chosen to represent Norfolk, joining the other 3,500 Scouts and Guides travelling from the UK to Japan. Tens of thousands of Scouts and Guides from across the world will be travelling to Japan to attend what will be a once in a lifetime experience.

They have to raise the funds over the next 12 months to cover the cost of our travel and expenses – an amount of £2995 each.

World Scout Jamboree for Alex and Andrew

Continued from front cover... Alex and Andrew have already started fundraising and had several successful bag-packing sessions at Tesco in Sheringham. They also have plenty of ideas of how to achieve this figure but need as much support as possible – so far ideas include a music concert, cake stalls and more bag-packing.

They have both been members of Sheringham & Beeston Regis Scout Group for just over 10 years and are both currently Young Leaders. They both attend, along with Alex's twin sister Amelia, the Briston Explorer Unit and are part of Central Norfolk District. Andrew’s brother, James Mitchell was lucky enough to be selected to attend the World Scout Jamboree in Sweden in 2011 – such an opportunity only comes along every four years.

The boys have organised a Music Concert on Saturday 5 July from 3pm - 5pm to be held at The Lighthouse on Cromer Road in Sheringham. Entry will be free but donations welcome. There will be refreshments to purchase in the interval and a raffle.

Dear Margaret,

May I say a huge thank you to The Sheringham Independent and all the kind readers who donated goods and came along to help at the Remus Horse Sanctuary Table Top sale at The Lighthouse Church a couple of weeks ago.

I did not get all their names but everyone was so willing, and Sue Burton the Sanctuary founder was overwhelmed with the response and hard work everyone put in.

We made £508 on the day and £70 at a boot sale the following day. We have also been able to donate goods to Hillside Animal Sanctuary at West Runton. Every penny made will go to help the animals. Thanks a million everyone. Chris Parmenter, on behalf of the Remus Sanctuary

ST ANDREWS METHODIST CHURCH FLOWER FESTIVAL

The annual flower festival of St Andrews Methodist Church, Cromer Road, Sheringham takes place from Thursday 3 to Sunday 6 July.

The festivals have been run for over 40 years and over the years they have grown significantly in both quality of exhibits, size and attendance to become arguably the best festival in Norfolk. Last year the festival attracted well over 3000 visitors with several coach parties visiting this truly remarkable event. A total of nearly £12,000 was raised for church funds with a sizeable donation given to the local branch of Marie Curie. This charity received the most votes from visitors to the festival who were invited to select from several choices of charities.

Every year the floral arrangements of the festival are designed to a specific theme. Last year’s theme was ‘We have a lot to be thankful for’ and our pictures from last year’s festival give a flavour of the quality of the exhibitions and the attention to detail the designers take in

covering their subject.

This year’s Festival theme, ‘Journeys and Adventures will be depicted by more than 30 large stunning arrangements and we are confident that the designers of the displays will once again excel in their interpretation of the theme. Throughout the Festival background music, played mainly by organists, will add to the ambiance of the event.

Entry to the Festival is free, the money being raised totally from donations and from proceeds of catering and from the many varied stalls run by church members. Examples of these stalls include plants, jigsaws, books, arts & crafts, souvenirs and gifts, jewellery, stained glass art, Christian bookstall, Traidcraft stall, quality bric-a-brac,

a raffle and various quizzes.

Catering forms a major part of the Festival and many past visitors have complimented us on the quality of light lunches, cream teas and the extensive choice of cakes that are on offer. Overall a visit to St Andrew`s Flower Festival can be considered a great day out. Opening times of the festival are Thursday and Friday 10am to 5pm, Saturday 10am to 6pm and Sunday 12 noon to 6 pm. The church is wheelchair friendly and has disabled toilet facilities.

Further details of this year`s and historical festivals, where to find us plus much more information on St Andrews Church in general can be found on our web site www.sheringhammethodist.org.uk

We look forward to extending a warm welcome to visitors to our festival.

As Kevin is the President of the School Library Association, we hope his reading will inspire children to take part in the Library Summer Reading Challenge as well as being thoroughly entertaining. This year’s theme, Mythical Maze, is very much up Kevin’s street with his books on Norse heroes, King Arthur and traditional and East Anglian folk tales.

There is nothing quite like hearing stories from the author’s mouth, particularly when the author is as engaging as Kevin and the stories are exciting and thought provoking. There will be a selection of his books for sale and Kevin will be happy to sign any purchases.

Beachcombers Dining Club

A confusing title maybe because we do not comb the beaches looking for jetsam washed ashore! We are a dining club long-established in North Norfolk. Our members live in the towns and villages along this coastline and meet monthly, have an enjoyable 3-course meal and hear speakers on a variety of subjects. The venue for our meetings is The Feathers Hotel in Holt on the first Monday in the month at 6.30pm for 7.00pm.

Our guest speaker in June was David North of the Norfolk Wild Life Trust. At the beginning of the last century a small group of forwardlooking men clubbed together to purchase the area of marshland known as Cley Marshes. He defined eloquently the ‘wildness’ of the wetlands and his talk was high-lighted with superb pictures of the bird-life, plus the ‘painterly skies’ for which this area is renowned. The proposed new Simon Aspinall Education Centre is to be erected behind the existing Visitor Centre - but work cannot start until a pair of breeding birds vacate the present car park!

The next two meetings are 7 July when Brian Hedge’s talk will be ‘English Country Gardens and 4 August when Mike Stew will be entertaining us with an ‘audio visual exreavaganza!’

We are seeking to recruit new members and if you are thinking about coming to the next meeting you will have to pre-book a meal beforehand. Please contact our Catering and Speaker Secretary, Mrs Christine Jackson on 01263 711502, who will be happy to tell you more about our dining club.

Sheringham History Group

At our June meeting of the Sheringham History Group Mick Bensley shared with us 40 watercolour paintings depicting Sheringham Lifeboats with known ships lost offshore.

As a Sheringham lad, Mick often watched the fishermen launch their boats and heard tales of shipwrecks and rescues. The first lifeboats and rescuers in this area were Sheringham fishermen with their own boats. When Mick became an artist he was inspired to capture the historic scenes with many details gleaned from research, checking with fishermen for accuracy. His work, including books, prints and paintings may Mick Bensley watercolour depicting be viewed on his website The Henry Ramey Upcher taking the www.mickbensley.com. The crewfrom the brig Ispolem January next time you are at The Mo 1897 (with kind permission of Museum take time to appreciate Mr. Mick Bensley, taken from his book, Mick's watercolours but also The Sheringham Lifeboats 1838-2000) the heroic history depicted. The paintings tell a story from Sheringham’s history as if eyewitnessed over a hundred years ago.

to again be working with Wild in Art. We are sure the sponsors are going to love it and it is a great canvas for the artists. The interest in GoGoDragons! Norwich 2015 is huge and we have been inundated with sponsors wanting to get involved at a very early stage. We feel sure that GoGoDragons! will build on the success of GoGoGorillas! to give Norwich a fantastic event in 2015 and again raise vital funds for Break’s work with vulnerable children, young people and families”.

First two sculptures arrive

The moment we have all been waiting for! Deep in the Welsh countryside the Dragon Maker has been busy at work honing the Norwich Dragon for GoGoDragons! In the dead of night and with the help of City Sprint, the first two dragon sculptures made their way to Norwich to be unveiled.

Sculptured by Chris Wilkinson, Creative Director of Wild in Art, WIA is delighted to unveil the latest addition to their family of sculptures. Taking inspiration from Norwich’s rich heraldic history and the main reference to dragons around the City, they are certain that this latest sculpture is sure to breathe creative fire into Norwich next summer.

Break and Wild in Art will bring GoGoDragons! to Norwich next summer 2015. The first two sculptures have already been designed and the artists, Alex Egan who designed and painted Lily Gorilly and Samuel Thomas of Ray fame (GoGoGorillas!) began painting ready for the Royal Norfolk Show.

Sally Ann Wilkinson, Director of Wild in Art, commented "We are delighted to be working with Break and the creative communities of Norwich and Norfolk. We are truly excited to be unveiling our new sculpture in a city that has so warmly embraced our events. Bring on the Dragons!"

To sponsor a Dragon or to register to submit a design contact, Martin Green Break Fundraising Events Manager on 01603 670107 or email martin.green@break-charity.org.

With 38 sponsors already signed up and over 100 artists showing interest in submitting designs, GoGoDragons! is well on the way to bring the Dragon trail to life next summer. The Sponsors and Artists brochures will be available in the next couple of weeks.

Michael Rooney, Fundraising Manager at Break said, “Break is absolutely thrilled with the design of the GoGoDragons! sculpture and

North Norfolk Photographic Society met on Wednesday 4 June for an ‘In-Club’ competition. They were not entirely alone, as a showing of the film ‘Saving Mr Banks’ was happening in another part of Holt Community Centre. The sound effects from the movie did not affect the club, who hope that their not always quiet proceedings did not annoy the filmgoers - they apologise if they did.

A couple of times each year, the Society holds a Single Image competition. No outside

The prescribed subject was ’English Gardens’ and voted winner was Richard Bryan with ‘That's quite enough gardening for today’ which showed an antique garden lounger, inhabited only by a sunhat with a discarded wheelbarrow and a bag of tools beside it. Then a lively discussion of all the 14 prints entered took place, led by Malcolm English and Bill Day. The Society meets on alternate Wednesday evenings at Holt Community Centre. Visitors are most welcome and further information can be found either from the website www.nnphotosoc.org, or from Secretary Judith Wells on 01328 710181.

Spring Notes from the Commons

At the beginning of March, after a mild but Damselfly, the earliest of the Odonata to wet winter, the frogs were already in the pond emerge. A spring migrant that hasn’t been seen in their 100s with masses of spawn already for a number of years on the SSSI turned up present. A Small Tortoiseshell butterfly was (17th April). It was a male Ring Ouzel, noted (3rd March), the first for the year on a Blackbird-like bird with a white bib. These the Commons. Holly Blue and Orange-tip butterflies also made an appearance that day. Next day (10th April), Mark recorded a new species for the Commons as a Raven circled overhead then headed west. A Red Kite and five Common Buzzards were also seen and on the heaths Green Tiger Beetles were pairing up. With many Buttercups blooming a small moth, the Cocksfoot (5mm long) appears in large numbers within the flowers, while at the other end of the scale Mark spotted a Red Kite drifting west (16th May). On 18th May, a medium-sized bat (species unknown) was seen fluttering over the pond and occasionally going to the water surface to drink. This was in bright morning sunshine and very unusual behaviour. It has been suggested that the hot weather had forced it to leave its roost to drink. A Cinnebar moth, a Mother Shipton moth and a Brown Argus butterfly were recorded by Mark (20th May), who also disturbed another Green Sandpiper the following day (21st May). With the good weather dragonflies were becoming more abundant with Broad-bodied Chaser and Four-spotted Chaser present at the pond (26th May). A very uncommon sight nowadays is House Martins ‘hawking’ over the pond, although three were present (28th May). Sheringham Otterndorf Twinning Association - Twin Town Visit

20 members of the Sheringham Otterndorf Twinning Association have just returned from their bi-annual visit to Sheringham’s twin town of Otterndorf accompanied by newly elected Mayor, Tricia Brooks.

The group were welcomed at an official reception held in the Town Hall. Chairman Evelyn Meakin presented a framed Chris Taylor photograph of the December storm on the West Promenade and a painting by Maureen Cooper of the West Fisherman’s Slope was given to the Burgermeister Claus Johannssen by Tricia Brooks as a gift from the Sheringham & District Society.

are being encouraged to take part in exchanges.

An interesting and varied programme had been organised with visits to Westerstede for the Rhododendron Festival, a guided tour of Cuxhaven’s newest museum depicting the fishing industry followed by lunch in one of the many fish restaurants, a guided walk through Otterndorf, a BBQ for hosts & guests on a farm and finally, before all the farewells, everyone met up for ‘Cafe & Kuchen’. Sadly the day visit to the island of Neuwerk by ship had to be cancelled due to the strong easterly winds causing extreme low water for landing.

For more information on twinning, please contact Evelyn Meakin (Chairman) Telephone 01263 823818

There will be a return visit next year from Otterndorf which will be the 28th year of exchanges between the two towns. Different interest groups

On 27 May we had a fascinating talk from Mike Crowe who brought many photos and pictures as well for us all to see. Mike has travelled all over the world for many years, and since retiring he has been able to be away for longer periods of time - the last adventure lasted six and a half months! We listened intently to his journeys, travelling by rail, air, sea, on a bike and on foot. We could have listened to him for hours and we do hope he will come back another time. Mike has been on his world wide rambles for 40 years and his travels have taken him to 47 countries, he has slept under the stars, in youth hostels and he has eaten all sorts, including black furry spiders which were deep fried! He visited Russia in the 70's and again more recently and this time he was overwhelmed with the luxury of all the gold in the Kremlin. His trip to Mount Kilimanjaro was a once in a lifetime experience and he and one other person were the only ones in his party to reach the summit with the three volcanic cones kabo, mawenzi and shira - the highest mountain in Africa, at 20,000 feet. A most demanding climb both mentally and physically which he began at 1am. He found India hot, steamy and the begging very aggressive - the seventh largest Country and the second most populated. In Nepal he had a spectacular view of the Himalayas, the highest mountain range in the world, but one of the poorest countries. He

Congratulations …

I would like to congratulate all involved with the outstanding Oliver production staged at the Pavilion Theatre on Cromer pier. It was my début appearance in the chorus line up and the magic will live in my heart forever.

As a child running around in London's vibrant East End in the 1960s I never dreamed I would one day appear on stage in one of my all time favourite musicals.

Oliver I really wanted to go for it, however, in two minds knowing I was rusty after a break of over three decades. It took a little persuading by a couple of friends and I'm thankful for that.

I knew it had to be something special to celebrate Cromer and Sheringham Operatic

I went on to play lead role in a Greek spoken play in London and joined local dramatic societies. Then life's unpredictability changed my path and we moved to East Runton, the rest is history and I wouldn't change it for the world. As soon as I heard CSODS was auditioning for

and Dramatic Society's centenary year and I can confidently say the show surpassed all expectations.

I have enjoyed many CSODS musicals so I had an idea of the high standards delivered in the past and now I understand why. Work started soon after the auditions under the excellent direction of the amazing Amanda Howell.

Weeks of dedication by choreographer, Carole Beaty and musical director, Rosamund Walton was destined for inevitable success.

Everything fell into place from the start and it was obvious during rehearsals the show had powerful lead characters.

Mr Bumble the cruel, pompous beadle of the poorhouse was played by Peter Howell. Fagin, a selfconfessed miser who does very little to improve the squalid lives of the children he takes in was played by Nick Bird.

Bill Sykes one of Dickens's most vicious characters and a very strong force in the novel when it comes to having control over somebody or harming others, was convincingly played by Gary Clifton. Nancy, who is fiercely protective of Oliver and harbours a great deal of motherly affection 16

Every evening I listened to Claire singing 'As Long As He Needs Me' backstage and marvelled at her vocal precision.

Oliver was played by Joseph Oxtoby and Noah Vigor who took turns under the spotlight gaining audience sympathy with their acting.

All the children did remarkably well and I'm sure some of them will go on to be stage names of the future. CSODS is a wonderful introduction for children to flourish in theatrical arts and we are indeed lucky to have Cromer pavilion theatre on our doorstep.

I can now reveal that this meant much more to me than people first thought. Acting was my first love and I studied theatrical arts and photography in sixth form at Wanstead High school and at Forest College thereafter.

I entered a two year drama course just four Months before the exam and achieved a distinction playing a psychopath in the suspense thriller 'Night Must Fall' who could display many different personalities to suit his needs. I acquired a Welsh accent by listening to 'Ivor the Engine' over and over.

and pity for him was played by Claire Reynolds.

I don't think some people realise the amount of work that goes into the sets, lighting costumes and overall preparation behind the scenes, it was a mammoth task that gelled together on this occasion. Wardrobe mistress, Sharon Rogers worked wonders.

There were numerous costume changes and I had five throughout each show, playing four different characters. I'm truly grateful to the ladies that did a grand job helping us change. Thank you Mary and Tina, your contribution was priceless.

There was never any pressure until opening night, there was an air of unusual anticipated silence when the announcement echoed around the theatre that the show was about to begin. No one knew what to expect.

While the National anthem played I closed my eyes in the wings and prayed. Then the magic began to unfold, after the rapturous applause at the end of the first act everyone knew they were delivering a fine performance.

By the end of the show the audience stood on their feet and it continued every night. The popularity of the production sunk in when there were hardly any tickets left throughout the week, a complete sell-out had been achieved.

I would like to extend my heartfelt acknowledgement to every single person involved in the show, who all played a vital part on this amazing journey.

On the final night I was given permission to leave the stage before the walk down, so that I could capture a charity cheque presentation on camera. I remember rushing up to the theatre balcony and viewing the spectacle from an audience's point of view. It was very emotional as the cast gave their final bow and I shed a silent tear in the darkness.

My tears changed to laughter when someone in the crowd spotted me and called out in a loud voice "Look! The Oom Pah Pah man is now a photographer"

The Kid from London's slums had pieced together another bit of life's jigsaw puzzle, it was a dream come true.

I am also overjoyed the company raised £2000 for the chosen local charity, 'About with Friends' - long may it continue. Andreas Yiasimi

Here Comes Summer! Comedy, farce and gripping mystery Sheringham Little Theatre is serving up an enticing selection of delightful drama this summer.

throughout the summer. The season launches on Friday 25 July with Terence Frisby’s rip-roaring comedy Funny About Love, which runs until Wednesday30 July.

Tickets have now gone on sale for five exciting plays during this year’s relaunched repertory season, which runs from Friday 25 July to Saturday 6 September.

Little Theatre director Debbie Thompson explains the summer rep will have a slightly different feel this year, with four of the shows running for just a week each.

“Our summer rep is enjoyed by a wide range of different people, from those living in the area, who enjoy the variety of good theatre right on their doorstep, to visitors who make it part of their annual holiday to Norfolk,” she says.

“This is particularly exciting for us as Terence himself will be directing the production,” explains Debbie. “Terence is, of course, bestknown for writing There’s A Girl In My Soup, which starred Peter Sellers and Goldie Hawn in the film version.”

Contemporary thriller Kiss of Death, by Simon William, follows, running from Friday 1 August to Thursday 7 August.

“Having a clear single run for Ccast member Ryan Starling “This is a gripping each production will make it (various productions) play that uses much easier for people to plan technology to great their visits and to ensure they effect. It is very tense but there are also some have seats for the plays that most appeal to great moments of humour,” she adds. them, however it is essential they book soon.” Next come three weeks of light-hearted This year the Little Theatre will be staging a entertainment. Ray Cooney’s frivolous farce selection of lively shows to suit all tastes

Caught in the Net runs from Saturday 9 August to Thursday 21 August, and then Neville’s Island, by Tim Firth, offers contemporary comedy from Saturday 23 August to Saturday 30 August.

“Ray Cooney is the master of farce and we are thrilled to be staging this sequel to Run for Your Wife,” says Debbie. “Neville’s Island is very funny too but also offers depth as it explores themes very pertinent to an audience of today.”

The final play of the summer repertory season is The Mystery of Irma Vep, a Gothic comedy by Charles Ludlam.

“This will be at the Little Theatre from Tuesday 2 September to Saturday 6 September” she says. “It is an ingenious play and it will make a wonderful end to a superb summer season.”

She adds “We can’t wait for the summer rep to begin but as most of these plays only run for a week we are urging people to book as early as possible to ensure they don’t miss out.”

Chance to train with West End stars youngsters and adults will get the chance to train with stars of the West End at a special day-long workshop in north Walsham this autumn.

The event will give those who come along priority to sign up for a week-long West End Experience course in February half-term 2015 with cost of their taster day refunded if they book.

It is the first time the popular West End Experience has come to North Norfolk and organisers have chosen The Atrium because of its rehearsal and performance facilities. Previously courses in Norfolk have run only in Norwich and within schools in Aylsham and Hellesdon.

Stars of shows such as Les Miserables, Mamma Mia and Wicked, among others, will work with the youngsters and adults to teach them dance routines from the shows and put them through their paces in big singing numbers as well as solos and acting. The

week ends with a special performance by those taking part alongside the show stars. There will also be a performance after the taster day. Courses are also attended by a London casting agent and many students have gone on to careers in showbusiness after attending courses.

The taster day will be on Sunday, October 26, 10am-6pm at a special price of £25 per person. It’s open to children over the age of eight and adults.

Jo Chandler, East Anglian organiser for West End Experience, said “There are limited spaces available and we have already had a lot of interest. We are excited to be able to stage one of our courses at The Atrium. The facilities there are just amazing. Anyone can come along. You don’t need singing and dancing experience to take part. It’s just an incredible opportunity to work with the best in the business. It’s also a real confidence booster.”

Atrium director Joe Ballard said “It’s great to be working with West End Experience, who

West End Experience creative director Craig Whiteley, who has performed in shows such as Blood Brothers and The Mousetrap said “It’s always exciting when we come to a new town. Cromer Pier Pavilion Theatre is preparing for the coming summer season and the opening of its famous Cromer Pier Show now in its record breaking 38th year. Opening on 21 June the ‘End of the Pier’ show is the last of its kind in Europe where audiences are entertained by a line-up of traditional variety acts for the three-month summer season. No other pier in Europe can boast the same credentials, which makes the Cromer Pier Show a ‘must see’ experience for people of all ages.

Cromer Pier is a long-standing historical icon for the North Norfolk Coast and the Pavilion Theatre is now the only theatre at the end of a pier that has its own on ‘in-house’ production show every summer season.

Following on from the Christmas Show success the theatre at the end of the iconic pier is gearing up for what is set to be a colourful summer Cromer Pier Show.

The Cromer Pier Show (also known to many as ‘Seaside Special’) opens on 21 June and runs until 20 September. This year’s show features an all new line-up including comedian Paul Eastwood, impressionist Adam Daye, the multi-instrumental and vocal duo Andante and lead vocalists Louis Yssel and Jane Watkins, who makes a welcome return after her amazing Christmas Show appearance. The Summer Show wouldn’t be complete without a full ensemble cast of talented dancers who will be leading the cast through a host of production numbers from some favourite West Shows. The Summer Show will be a visual delight with a blend of quality acts encompassing comedy, music, song and dance that are designed to appeal to people of all ages.

Deadline extended to 31 July for households and businesses to apply for assistance from flood support scheme

North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) has received applications from over 100 households and businesses in the district for grants from the Flood Support Scheme announced on 1 April. The Council is aware that half as many again might be eligible to apply and therefore is extending the previous deadline to ensure they have every opportunity to get their applications in. The new deadline is 31 July 2014.

The central government schemes, administered locally by NNDC, have been operating from 1 April and are intended to assist those individual households and businesses that suffered flooding to their property in December to increase their capability to withstand any future flooding.

the Flood Support Scheme, while businesses not necessarily flooded, but who were adversely affected, can apply for funds from the Business Support Grant to reimburse business losses and help with business recovery. The new deadline for all applications is 31 July 2014.

Completed forms have so far been received from 108 applicants, around two thirds of the households and businesses that could be eligible to apply. NNDC is hoping that the remaining properties and businesses affected by the flooding, but which might not initially have considered completing an application, will now do so before the new deadline. Over the coming weeks NNDC will be contacting directly those who have not yet applied but are known to have been adversely affected.

NNDC Leader, Tom FitzPatrick, said “Many deserving households and businesses have now applied for the funds, but we are well aware that not all of those who are eligible have been in touch with us and we would really like to hear from them.

“Those who experienced flooding suffered significantly and they all deserve the extra help that this package provides, to increase their resilience against flooding in the future. We have extended the deadline because we want to make sure that they all have every opportunity to apply.” Details of the schemes, guidance as to who can apply and application forms are available on the nnDC website

Tribute to the Normandy Veterans

Sitting down, remembering days gone by, is a past time most people carry out in the comfort of their own homes, yet here I sit in the early hours of the morning in one of the best hotels in which I have ever stayed. You may ask ‘Why do I call it the best?’ A good question since that is a purely subjective statement. After all, one man’s good is another man’s bad. Well, my answer is simply that this particular hotel is full of my friends, friends of all ages. We have spent a great few days visiting cemeteries. I hear the cries of wonder, if not outrage ‘How can visiting cemeteries be great?’ If I were to tell you those cemeteries were in Normandy, you may start to get an inkling of my meaning. But, as the saying goes ‘If you have to ask you will not understand the answer’.

All over Europe – no – the world , cemeteries containing the dead of our nation sit in quiet solitude. Sometimes the footsteps of the living will disturb the insects at work amongst the roses. But for the most part our young men and women lay undisturbed. When I say young I mean it. Today I saw the gravestone of a soldier whose age was 20. Not the youngest, nor the oldest I have ever seen, but none the less a young man who was not granted the chance to live the life I have.

Standing next to me as I gaze down at the headstone (one of so many we have seen that they almost blur before my eyes), is a man of 95 years of age. Once he was young, and had to do and see terrible things in the name of peace. Over 70 years separate the two men, the two friends, yet, for a moment, a split second of time, both are young men again. The 95 year old man talks to his friend, and you can almost hear the 20 year old whisper his answer in the treetops as the wind gently rustles the leaves. No, ghosts do not walk the graveyards, just a deep sense of loss. The power of friendship draws our veterans and their families back to stand near their comrades for a short while, and that, in turn, builds new friendships, as those people talk to each other, sharing their experiences good and bad.

Friendship is a powerful force. We all do what we can to help our friends and we would hope they would do the same for us if we were in trouble. I have made many friends over the years. Some I have kept. Others have drifted away. But all have added something to me to make the man I am today.

When I think of the friends I have made just by talking to our WW2 veterans, and how easily I get on with them, it makes me pause in thought – for there are many I will never be able to talk to.

Soon our WW2 veterans will be gone. Within 20 years their experiences will pass out of living memory. So if you know of anyone who has served their country in our all too troubled times, ask them their story. After all, it is highly possible that many of your best friends you will never meet, for they lay in the ground in quiet solitude. Justin Jones

Skydive Fundraiser

Vikki Jay of Jay's Cleaning services is doing a second tandem skydive at UK Parachuting in Beccles on Sunday 29th June in memory of Ellie Loades.

She suffered from cystic fibrosis, and in November last year lost her battle at the she of 16 years . Ellie's parents Nick and Elaine have decided to set up the charity “Ellie’s Love”. The purpose of this charity is to support local people with Cystic Fibrosis and their families. When Ellie was alive the Norfolk Branch of the Cystic Fibrosis Trust were an enormous, such as helping with providing much needed funds to help her buy a physio vest which improved her lung function. Ellie was also helped enormously by the Quidenham Children’s Hospice, part of EACH. The support provided by the staff during her life and in particularly during her final days and hours helped Ellie to pass away peacefully at home, as she so dearly wished. Nick and Elaine are now using their time to raise funds for “Ellie’s Love” so that the memory of Ellie can forever live on by providing vital funds to local people with Cystic Fibrosis and their families when they need it most – just as Ellie, Nick and Elaine were helped when they needed it most and also to help ensure they can live life to the full – just as Ellie did. Monies raised will be split between cystic fibrosis norfolk, East Anglian children's hospice (EACH) & N&N Teenage ward.

Please can you help me raise £300 to make my jump worthwhile by either contacting me direct on my mobile 07971543641. Or go to the website www.ellieslove.co.uk/ and donate directly into the Ellie's love fund adding my name Vikki Jay as the reference number. In association with www.sheringhamdeals.co.uk

Gas Care & Repair

Cats and kittens come in all shapes and sizes but, at this time of the year, it is predominantly kittens that take up residence in our pens (and sometimes their mothers too). Recent newcomers include a pregnant mum (now with four kittens), four kittens, a mum and three kittens, a mum with four kittens and three kittens living outside (with two more to be caught). Although still very young all are thriving apart from the young mum with four kittens which came into care last week. Smuts, one of the delightful The mother cat had been living in someone’s garden for the last two young cats in care months and gave birth to the kittens about three weeks ago. On arrival in care it was obvious that mum was in poor condition and the kittens not in the best of health. Taken to the vets the next day mum was blood tested and the test indicated that she was FELV positive. A sample of her blood was then sent for further testing at Glasgow University and, thankfully, we have now had the result back indicating she does not have FELV. We were very relieved to receive this news as, unfortunately, any kittens born to a FELV positive cat will also be infected. Although we do have many kittens in care most of these will be going to homes with people on our waiting list.

When cats and kittens come into our care they are all vaccinated for FELV to help prevent the spread of this dreadful disease and to give them a good start in life. They will all have been checked at our vets (because our fosterers are spread far and wide we do use four practices). If we have any concerns regarding the cat(s) health they are blood tested for FIV/FELV, will have a dental if this is required and any other concerns regarding their general health are also discussed and dealt with before they are put on our website to be re-homed. We blood test mother cats wherever possible (if not, one of the kittens, if no mum available). Very often young kittens will have a heart murmur and this will be monitored, although generally speaking this will have disappeared by the time the kitten has its second vaccination.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit www.cats.org.uk/northwalsham for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

Sheringham & Cromer Lions Club for Free Quotes

We are now coming to the end of our Lionsitic Year for 2013/2014 and our current Lion President Anton will soon be handing over the reins to Lion Derick to steer us through the next year.

It has been a good year for us due to the fact that in October 2013 we became a self sufficient Club after receiving our Charter. Prior to this we were a branch Club of Taverham & District Lions.

One of the last duties Lion President Anton carried out was to receive a gift of a ‘Lions Welcome Banner’ from the Lion President of the West Mersea Lions 26

Club. The banner had been promised to us following our Charter celebration dinner in February. President Anton together with three other Club members met up with the West Mersea President and three other West Mersea Lions members in Scole for lunch and the presentation.

If anyone would be interested in finding out what Lions do or would like to come along to a meeting and meet up with us please contact Lion Hazel Harris on 01263 821276 or email brihaz@btinternet.com

Sheringham BeachLife mission recruits 2014 team

The BeachLife activity outreach for children and young people on Sheringham sea-front last August attracted over 200 children and young people, in a week of glorious weather, and the organisers are now recruiting their enthusiastic team of volunteers for the 2014 event.

Last summer’s activities kicked off each day with the “Beach Special”, where all ages came together at the cliff-top marquee on The Lees for music, games, drama and fun, and to introduce that day’s theme, which was one of the miracles of Jesus. Guest appearances from the Funky Chicken, the Gorilla, and “Mrs Viennetta” with her bizarre ice-creams added to the frolics. The children and young people then split into age-groups for their “Going Deeper” sessions to explore the day’s theme in more depth before breaking for lunch.

The afternoons saw an “egg parachute” challenge, micro-raft racing, mini-Olympics,

and the special appearance of Christian illusionist Steve Price, with a circus-themed afternoon with barbecue on the last day. Evening activities for over 8s included a treasure hunt, laser-quest and beach sports, putting, and a “Sheroploy” trail around the town, all of which were well attended.

The infamous Tide Fight will return this year, as the tides will be favourable for the event. “Last year’s BeachLife was a huge success, helped by glorious weather” said Richard Allen, co-ordinator of this year’s event. “But this year we will be building on that success with an event that is even bigger and better, as we bring the Good News of Jesus to Sheringham’s

Eee lad, nowt but great music!

The last Briston Organ Show was on Friday 30 May when top UK keyboard virtuoso Ian Griffin drove all the way from Swansea to play for us - and then drove home again afterwards! Using his dual Ketron keyboards and pedals 'instrument' he thrilled a very attentive audience with numbers that ranged from 'Candida', through 'Ramona' played as a Mambo (!), selections from 'Oliver' and 'Calamity Jane' , and the Adele hit 'To Make You Feel My Love'. The show's raffle and refreshments made £125 towards the Copeman Centre's fundraising, and the Air Ambulance stall raised a very healthy £55 for their valuable cause.

children and young people, as well as those on holiday.”

The outreach will run from Tuesday 26 to Friday 29 August. There is a training afternoon for those interested in helping on team on Saturday 28 June.

Visit www.sheringhambeachlife.co.uk for more information about the event, and to download application forms, which should be submitted as soon as possible.

Timb Win er dow Now s Avai lable

The next show is on Friday 4 July when top UK organist Andrew Nix will be visiting from his home in Yorkshire. He will be playing a Roland digital organ, and as his army of fans will tell you, no matter what sort of music you like, there will be lots of numbers in his programme that will suit you down to the ground! Coupled with his obvious musical skills, he is quite a comedian too, so plenty of laughs are guaranteed! If you would like to join us for this fun-packed show, tickets are just £6 each (pre-booked) and under 16 year olds get in ABSOLUTELY FREE if each is accompanied by a paying adult - just mention this when you book your tickets, which can be done by phoning Carol on 01263 860844 - and don't forget that payment can be by cash, cheque, or leading credit or debit cards.

The Copeman Centre is a very cosy venue, with comfortable seats, good acoustics, and wide level access for disabled music lovers. The show starts at 7.30pm, with doors open at 7pm, and if you like good live music played to perfection, you really must come and join us!

Gresham’s U11 Cricket Festival

On Sunday 8 June, Gresham's hosted an U11 8-a-side Cricket Festival where 8 teams made up of 73 children took part and played some terrific competitive cricket in glorious sunshine.

Gresham’s welcomed schools and local cricket clubs who took part in the Festival including Beeston Hall School, Bradfield CC, Grasshoppers (a second Gresham's Prep team), Great Melton CC, Gresham's Prep School, Horsford CC, Sheringham CC and Taverham Hall School. It was a wonderful day which had been very well-organised by Mr Smith (Festival Co-ordinator) along with the team of managers/ coaches/scorers/umpires/captains who all helped to ensure the day ran smoothly.

'Most Valuable Player' awards were presented to one member of each team who each received a white cricket ball with all visiting players receiving a certificate and Gresham's water bottle.

Gresham's is very fortunate this term to have employed Australian cricket coach, Mark Sorell. Mark played first-class cricket in Australia, before more recently coaching South Australia “The Redbacks”, Australia Ladies Head Coach and Australia 'A', as well as being one of the permanent coaches at the Darren Lehmann Academy in Adelaide. He is currently Director of Cricket at St Peter’s College, Adelaide. The School's young cricketers have really benefited from his skills and expertise as a cricket coach and look forward to welcoming him back again in 2015 and in future summers!

Martin Smith said, "This is the second year we have held an U11 Cricket Festival here at Gresham's Prep School and we were again delighted with how the Festival went. It was wonderful to see so many enthusiastic young cricketers taking part at Gresham's. We are now hoping this Festival will become a firm fixture in our sporting calendar."

Council receives over £200,000 to give local sport a boost

North Norfolk District Council’s (NNDC) ‘Sports Clubs and Hubs’ project is set to help more local people get into sport thanks to £211,512 of National Lottery funding from Sport England’s Community Sport Activation Fund.

that has already been achieved with a number of ‘community gyms’ in the district.

There were well over 200 applications nationally, and NNDC is among 88 projects to receive a share of £15 million of funding to support grassroots sport activity across the country.

Funding for the three-year long ‘Sports Clubs and Hubs’ project will enable NNDC to deliver a range of sporting and exercise activities, designed to encourage those, particularly the older and younger age groups, who currently have difficulty gaining regular access to sports facilities. The project aims to build on the work the council has already delivered through its highly successful mobile gym service. Emphasis will be placed on making these activities self-supporting in the longer term, something

Glyn Williams, NNDC Cabinet Member for Leisure and Cultural Services, said “We are absolutely delighted to receive funding from the Community Sport Activation Fund. It will allow us to develop our sports provision for people who currently have difficulty finding local sports and exercise facilities. We will be able to offer a selection of exciting non-traditional activities such as martial arts, street dance and dodge ball as a way for everyone to get into sport and get them coming back for more. Our aim is for the activities to become selfsupporting after three years, or even sooner if the interest is there, which I am sure it will be.” Designed in response to local demand, the Community Sport Activation Fund allows local authorities, charities and other organisations to apply for funding for innovative projects that

will get more people playing sport.

Mike Diaper, Sport England Director of Community Sport, said "It’s great to be working with innovative projects like ‘Sports Clubs and Hubs’ to offer people the chance to get into sport in a way that best suits them.

“The investment being made through the Community Sport Activation Fund is making a real difference at a very local level. I’m particularly pleased that more than half the funding is going into projects in deprived areas, helping more people develop a lifelong sporting habit.”

The Community Sport Activation Fund is investing a total of £47.5 million of funding over five funding rounds. Already 156 projects have shared in £27.2 million of funding over three rounds, receiving grants of between £50,000 and £250,000 to provide grassroots sport at a very local level.
