‘That there’s some corner of a foreign field’ Covering Sheringham, the Runtons, Holt and surrounding villages in association with the Cromer Times and North Walsham Times

Visiting the cemeteries of the First World War is a very moving experience and is especially poignant as we commemorate the one hundredth anniversary of the outbreak of war on 4 August 1914.

In the large cemeteries, such as Tyne Cot, row after row of identical headstones disappear into the distance. The headstones are deliberately uniform to demonstrate the common sacrifice made by all ranks, with no distinction between the graves of officers and men. The standard secular headstones are made of Portland stone with a curved top and straight sides. Each bears the name of the man beneath carved in a fine Roman alphabet designed by MacDonald Gill, the brother of Eric Gill. It was agreed that a regimental badge and a religious symbol – a cross or a star of David – could also be carved into the stone, together with a text if the soldier’s family so requested. Over those many thousands of graves containing an unidentified body the headstone bears the poignant description, chosen by Rudyard Kipling – ‘A Soldier of the Great War...Known to God’. The cemeteries are beautifully maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. Continued on page 4...

‘That there’s some corner of a foreign field’

Continued from front cover... Although there was much disagreement at the time about the form and location of the cemeteries and memorials it was always felt that the war cemeteries should not be gloomy or sad places and the importance of horticulture was essential to the overall design. The cemeteries were intended to convey something of the character of England the dead had fought for, an ideal England full of gardens and beautiful landscapes.

As well as the planting of evergreen trees – Ilex, Box, Bay, Cypress, Yew and Juniper – it was agreed that good use should be made of the most beautiful flowering shrubs and plants to show reverence and peace.

The great gardener, Gertrude Jekyll, prepared planting plans for four cemeteries and it can be argued that they set the pattern for all of the others and that under the influence of Sir Edwin Lutyens the British war cemeteries became ...’the modern apotheosis of the secret garden ... there is the enclosing evergreen hedge ... masses of workaday shrubs of the English countryside – blackthorn, white thorns, hazel, guilder rose and honeysuckle ... and in the soft borders where the headstones stand there are hellebores, narcissus, forget me nots, fritillaries, foxgloves, columbines, London Pride, bergenias, nepeta and floribunda roses.

Variety in height and the timing of the floral display are important horticultural considerations and low growing plants are chosen for areas immediately in front of the headstones ensuring the inscriptions are not obscured.

The absence of any form of paving between the headstones rows contributes to the simplicity of the design. Lawn paths also add to the garden atmosphere and are irrigated in the dry season when there is insufficient rain. In countries where irrigation is inappropriate or impractical, dry landscaping is an ecological alternative favoured by the Commission’s horticulturalists. There are separate planting schemes for tropic climates.

the Western Front and the Gallipoli peninsula, mobile teams of gardeners operate from a local base. Elsewhere, large cemeteries have their own dedicated staff while small cemeteries are usually tended by a single gardener, often part time.

There will be a lot of television coverage of the First World War in forthcoming weeks so watch out for the English gardens in the foreign fields.

Sheringham & Cromer Lions Club

The Sheringham & Cromer Lions are a relatively small Lions Club and are desperately trying to recruit more members but they still manage to raise money for good causes.

Many people suffered as a result of the tidal surge flooding that hit Walcott, Bacton & Happisbugh back in December 2013. Some of the victims of the tidal surge flooding can be seen in the picture (taken by Maurice Gray) being presented with cheques by outgoing President Anton Elliott of the Sheringham & Cromer Lions Club. The Lions collected £1,250 for the victims following the floods by holding street collections and appeals to local residents. In February they gave the Walcott, Bacton & Happisburgh Flood Support Group £500 and in June the they presented a further £750 by way of 15 cheques for £50 to individual victims.

Freemasonry - What's it all about? During Carnival week 2013, a 'Freemasonry Trailer' on Ottendorf Green attracted many visitors, with local Freemasons engaging with the public, dispelling myths and answering questions. 'The Sheringham Lodge' is returning this year, and some readers may wonder what Freemasonry is about. Here are answers to some frequently asked questions. What is Freemasonry? UK's largest non-religious, voluntary organisation. Members are encouraged to help those in need through time and charitable donations. To promote kindness in the community, encouraging fairness, honesty and integrity. Who are Freemasons? Any man aged 21 or over, of any faith, good character, and has belief in a 'Supreme Being'. Our Lodge has 70+ members of varying ages and backgrounds. is Freemasonry a religion? No. Each member has belief in their own God, referred to as a 'Supreme Being'. It is not a religion, but some principles are in common with many of the great religions. Why can't women join? They can. A women's Lodge meets in Sheringham. However, the two organisations are separate, although social events can include both. is Freemasonry a secret organisation? No. Like most clubs it's only open to members. Our book of rules is on sale to the public and cer-

similar. If someone is interested in joining, they can come along and ask questions in a relaxed social atmosphere. Do Masons reALLY roll up their trouser leg and wear aprons? Yes, every Candidate does so on admission into Freemasonry to show that everyone enters on equal footing and standing. Stonemasons wear aprons and ours show a member's achievements. Can i find out more? With 6 Lodges in Sheringham you may already know a Freemason and not realise it! For more information email our Secretary - sheringhamlodge6621@gmail.com or visit www.norfolkmasons.org.uk Alternatively come to Ottendorf Green, Wednesday 6 to Saturday 9 August, 10am - 4pm, to see our 'Information Trailer', with local members available to answer questions and tell you more.

emonies available on the internet and in libraries. Many Lodges hold 'Open Evenings' to visit and ask questions. How often do you meet? Our Lodge meets eight times a year. A member can visit other Lodges too; there are 76 Lodges in Norfolk alone! Locally we meet at the Masonic Centre, 36 Cromer Road. What happens at meetings? A meeting has two parts. First the Lodge business, e.g. Minutes of previous meeting and ceremony for admitting new members. The second is for socialising and enjoying a meal together. How do you raise money for charity? Often with small collections at meetings, or through social events. However, all members only contribute what they can afford; never to the detriment of themselves or family. Monies are donated to Masonic and non-Masonic causes It’s fairly common knowledge that dogs, like humans, can develop alike. arthritis, particularly as they age. North Norfolk Photographic Society

North Norfolk Photographic Society held an ‘end-of-term- party’ on 2 July. It was not quite the end of their year - that was to come with the exhibition to be held in the Methodist Church Hall on 21, 22 and 23 July and which forms part of the Holt Festival Fringe. A dozen or so members had held an informal gathering at Wells-nextthe-Sea a week previously and the first half of the meeting was given over to showing projected images of the photographs they had taken. Then, after a delicious snack, there was a photographically slanted quiz which was taken in very good humour, some questions having easy answers and some very much not so! Meetings resume on 17 September. The Society now meets at 7.30pm on the first and third Wednesday evenings each month at The Holt Community Centre. Visitors are most welcome and further information can be found either from the website www.nnphotosoc.org, or from Secretary Judith Wells at 01328 710181.

Sheringham Independent 396 July 26th 2014

Free live music for young people!

The last Briston Organ Show was on Friday 4 July when a large audience thrilled to the music and mirth of Yorkshire's finest organist, Andrew Nix! Using his Roland Atelier organ, he played a really wide selection of numbers, from the laid back 'Sleepy Shores' to a bouncy medley of Shadows hits, theatre organ favourites such as 'Button Up Your Overcoat' and 'I Want To Be Happy', a medley of 'Platters' hits, and the catchy 'I'm In The Mood For Dancing'. What was interesting though is that whereas the audience normally consists of, shall we say, more mature music lovers, since it was announced that young live music lovers under 16 could get in free, as long as each one is accompanied by a paying adult, some youngsters are now coming along and having a great time too! As usual with all our shows, the proceeds from the raffle and refreshments are donated to the Copeman Centre's fundraising, this time making £171 for them, and the ladies who run a stall in aid of the East Anglian Air Ambulance made a very welcome £57.30!

The next show is on Friday 15 August when the wonderful organist, singer and all-round entertainer Angie Diggens will be appearing. Not only is she a superb musician, but her singing skills got her a second place in TV's 'Stars In Their Eyes' a few years back, so be assured you will be in the company of a great performer! The venue is the Copeman Centre, Briston, NR24 2LG, and the show starts at 7.30pm, doors open at 7pm. It is a comfortable venue with good vision and acoustics, and the wide level entrance makes it ideal for disabled music lovers. Tickets are just £6, and if you want to bring a keen under-16 year old with you, they will get in absolutely free - just mention this at the time of booking your tickets, which you can do by telephoning Carol on 01263 860844.

A Brand New Venture

Sheringham & District Philatelic Society are joining together with craftspeople from North Norfolk to hold a Stamp and Craft Fair. This will be held during Sheringham Carnival Week at The Lighthouse, 62 Cromer Road, Sheringham on Saturday 9 August from 10am until 2pm. The venture came about when a member’s partner made the suggestion to Gerry Smith, Chairman of the Society. He discussed the idea with his wife Dawn, herself an avid crafter all her life coming from three generations of crafts and professional needlework ladies. Dawn and Gerry have organised a number of craft fairs in North Norfolk since moving to the area in 1996. Most expensive stamp On the day there will be eight stamp club British Guiana 1c Magenta members’ tables who will be delighted to help with all aspects of stamp collecting. The fetched $9.5 million last month at Sotheby’s Club itself was founded in 1969 and is well supported in North Norfolk and welcomes new members on the second Monday of each month at the Church Hall, West Runton from 7.30pm until 9.30pm. There will also be over 12 craft and charity tables at the Fair with a wide range of different unique crafts on sale as well as a tombola, cake stall, brica-brac and raffles. Admission will be free. We are sure it will be a very interesting and enjoyable day for everyone.

Our last meeting before the summer break was on Tuesday 22 July when Joan Cook entertained us with ‘The Sound of Music and Laughter’. We start again on 9 September when we hope to welcome new members, with a Bring and Share Buffet.

We are very grateful to all our friends who helped in any way at the Flower Festival. Once again this was very successful and enjoyable for everyone who came to see the wonderful flowers and arrangements.

This is the only event the Church holds for the everyday upkeep of the Church and a donation from this function is also given to Sheringham Woodfields School.

St. Andrew`s Methodist Church Flower Festival

Over 3500 people flocked to St. Andrew`s Methodist Church, Sheringham on the first week in July, to see the annual spectacular four day Flower Festival, some coming in coach parties from Lowestoft, Colchester and other locations as well as local people.

In this year`s festival, entitled “Journeys & Adventures”, the 34 large floral arrangements depicted the theme in a wide variety of ways from Alice in Wonderland to The Journey of Life, Of Scientific discovery to Across the Antarctic, On the Orient Express to Under the Sea and many, many more.

Alongside the flowers the Cafeteria did a roaring trade in morning coffees, light lunches and afternoon teas, and the stalls did a very

Sheringham Lifeboat

brisk trade in souvenirs, crafts, plants, books and all manner of merchandise.

The amount raised by the festival this year is a grand net total of £13,562.38, which is towards the running expenses of the church and its work and mission, and a donation to a local charity, which this year is Sheringham Woodfields School.

We wish to give a very big thank you to everyone who has helped to make this event possible and the success that it is and the enjoyment it gives to so many people. From those who have worked behind the scenes in the weeks and months beforehand as well as those who helped and visited during the days of the Festival.

Now we look forward to next year’s Festival

Funny about Love

The seaside theatre’s famous summer season gets off to a sizzling start with this hilarious comedy, written and directed by theatre legend Terence Frisby.

While Sheringham Little Theatre is renowned for its diverse selection of theatre, film and entertainment, it’s perhaps most popular for its phenomenal summer repertory seasons which take place every year.

These are a series of five plays which all star a rotating ensemble of professional actors – allowing audiences to enjoy watching the same actors tackle multiple roles throughout the summer programme.

This year it all gets going on Friday 25 July with the madcap comedy Funny About Love. Set in a seemingly idyllic luxury London flat, life is turned upside-down for Rosie after her 52 year old husband Piers leaves her for his

pregnant secretary Larissa. When Larissa’s husband Darren turns up, he and Rosie plan their revenge including fraud and Piers moving back to the marital home with his mistress!

theatre is especially proud that Terence himself will also be directing the production, ensuring that his vision of the piece is authentically translated into Sheringham’s unique venue.

The play is written by Terence Frisby, who also penned the worldwide smash-hit There’s a Girl in My Soup, which was turned into a 1970 film starring Peter Sellers and Goldie Hawn. The

Funny About Love begins on 25 July and runs until 30 July. Information and tickets for this year’s summer repertory can be found by visiting: www.sheringhamlittletheatre.com/rep or by calling 01263 822347.

The Lobster really rocks!

Debbie Thompson, Director of Sheringham Little Theatre says “This season is genuinely going to be a special event, and we can’t wait to welcome back theatre lovers from across the country to Sheringham Little Theatre. We certainly aren’t resting on our laurels – in fact, we’re rushing off our feet to ensure this season is of the absolute highest quality. Once you try it, you’ll see why the theatre is such a relevant and exciting Norfolk institution!”

Rock The Lobster in association with Future Radio 107.8FM had one of its most successful nights ever with over 50 people attending to watch the local musicians go through their paces.

and done that before - the magic just blew her away.

True to form Paul Watson started the evening off with his rendition of "Hey Joe" and coupled that with Paul McCartney's "Smile Away". The riff was heard halfway down the street! This attracted a couple on holiday from Surrey and after a few minutes Jenny came up and gave us a turn, her guitar playing was great, then she said she had never got up in public

By this time the garden was filling up to capacity as Helen Robinson then came on and played four superb and moving numbers. The audience was spell bound drawing huge applause.

The event was held outside taking advantage of a hot sultry night which allowed much love and expression to bring on the audience.

Ervin gave us a beautiful set of his now famous routine and since his session at Future Radio he has just got better.

Local musician Mike from West Runton came next and gave of his best and explained that he had bought his tickets already for West Runton Pavilion celebrations for 4 October.

New starlet Jess then followed with some numbers from her own compositions which included some twirling with hoops. Dressed in only what could be described as a blaze of colour, for her first appearance she was well received. Leslie then played her banjo and showed that her finger plucking skills have improved tremendously! Members from two local groups, Spot and Under the Radar, then combined to belt out a blistering set of Punk/New Wave and turned the garden into a rousing pit of emotion. Great stuff indeed.

Timb Win er dow Now s Avai lable

With some of the musicians coming back on for a repeat performance, it was nearly half past eleven when the proceedings were wrapped up and a most successful night had been the result.

Thanks must go to Future Radio 107.8FM for their full support and to presenter Nigel Pearce from the Monday Morning Session for MC ing and holding the evening together. Paul Watson not only played guitar and sang but did a great job making sure all the people were miced up and ready to go for each act!

Downton Comes to Mackenzie Hotels

Earlier this month the Dales Country House Hotel was paid a visit by a little piece of Downton Abbey with the arrival of 30 vintage Crossley cars.

Built from 1904 until 1937 by the Crossley Brothers in Manchester, these cars were widely used by the Royal Family on tours to the Commonwealth and there is said to be as many cars here in the UK as there are in Australia and South Africa.

engine & pre-select gear box (this car was entered into the RAC Rally). Also the Crossley 20/70 built in 1922, sold with a guarantee to do 75 mph on Brooklands Track and registration EE4255 being the sole survivor of this model and 20.9 being again the only one of its kind left with a 3.2 litre engine and road tested in 1930 with a top speed of 71 mph.

The Climax and Regis were later models. The Regis sports saloon, manufactured in 1936 and boasting a six cylinder engine, was the last car to be produced before the Crossley brothers concentrated their efforts on manufacturing war machinery.

The Crossley Register owners’ club are a regular visitor to Mackenzie Hotels having stayed at the Sea Marge on their last annual car rally. The Register has been running for over 25 years with over 140 members and offers a fantastic opportunity for fellow owners to meet up, swap notes and share (with dinner on production of this edition. Booking essential) stories as well as being a great way of helping preserve these fantastic vintage cars.

Despite the unsettled weather the rally was a great success stopping at Holkham Hall, Felbrigg Hall, Houghton Hall and many small villages along the way.

On the Sunday the cars took to the road to take part in a treasure hunt. It was a great occasion with the cars and the Grade 2 listed building of the Dales Country Park Hotel complementing one another perfectly. ww.mackenziehotels.com

Enjoy a glass of Prosecco on us!

The Dales Country House Hotel played host to many fantastic Crossley vintage cars including the Crossley 14, built with either a 19.6 or 20.9 HP engine, the Crossley Shelley built in 1913 and, being the oldest on the rally, the Torquay with its four cylinder Coventry Class

WWI Commemoration

This year, on 4 August the country will come together to commemorate the day when 100 years ago, Great Britain entered a war with Germany that would become known as the Great War.

Locally, the Parish Church of Cromer, the Royal British Legion and Cromer Town Council have been working together to mark the day accordingly.

Starting at 11am on 4 August, the public will be invited to gather at the War Memorial in the grounds of the Parish Church. There will be a service of acknowledgement to those who gave their lives from the town of Cromer. The service will be led by the Rt Revd Jonathan Meyrick, the Bishop of Lynn and the Rev Peter Herbert, Curate at Cromer Parish Church.

Local military organisations and other groups will be invited to participate and along with the public will hear the roll-call of those local men who died in World War One.

Following two minutes silence, those present will be invited to enter the Church where a candle of remembrance will be lit by Bishop Jonathan and for the following eight hours,

a single guard of honour, changing each hour, will stand over the lit candle.

Later in the day at 7.30pm, a Centenary Concert will take place in the Parish Church. The Cromer and Sheringham Brass Band will be providing the music and following their appearance at the Cromer Town Council Civic and Community Carol Service last December, the internationally renowned Broadland Youth Choir will be singing a selection of songs. Baroness Shephard of Northwold (Gillian Shepherd was MP for South West Norfolk for 18 years and was Secretary of State for Education and also Secretary of State for Employment in the 1990’s) will return to her town of birth and will be reading some wellknown poems from the World War One period.

The concert and the day in Cromer will come to a conclusion at 10pm where it is hoped a young descendant of one of the World War One

We know that Sheringham paid a high price during this war, there are 75 names listed on our War Memorial who died during this conflict. These are not just names - they each represent an individual who died prematurely, fighting for our freedom. They were also somebody's son, husband, father, grandfather and/or friend. Their lives mattered and their loss was felt deeply for many, many years, long

There were around 3,500 people living in Sheringham at that time, of which, approximately 1,500 would have been eligible to join the forces. That means roughly one in 20 men of Sheringham gave their lives so that we can enjoy the freedom we do today.

We have no idea of the number of men and women from Sheringham who came back from the War with life changing injuries, both physical and mental. These individuals should also be remembered as they had to live with the results for years, never forgetting the horrors, in fact a living nightmare.

Sheringham will be marking this special anniversary with two events on Monday 4 August.

We would like to invite you all to join us at The War Memorial in Sheringham at 10.45am, where we will be holding a short service to

cle Cy

This is the time that across the nation it is hoped that candles will be lit in homes to mark the hour when in 1914 Sir Edward Grey famously said “The lamps are going out all over Europe”.

As the concert is expected to be the main event in Norfolk during the evening, tickets will sell out quickly. Tickets are £5 and are available from Cromer Town Council, North Lodge, Overstrand Road, Cromer – 01263 512254. The email is admin@cromertown.org

Proceeds from the concert will go towards the War Memorial Restoration Fund which is aiming to completely repair and restore the World War One Memorial before the 100th centenary of the end of World War One in November 2018.

Lights Out is an invitation to everyone in the UK to turn off their lights from 10pm until 11pm, leaving on a single light or candle for this shared moment of reflection to mark the 100th Anniversary of the date Great Britain entered the First World War.

commemorate the beginning of World War I. During this service you can lay a wreath or posy. To differentiate between Remembrance and this Commemoration, we are asking that you do not lay traditional poppies, but instead pink and white flowers with sprigs of rosemary for Remembrance.

In the evening, at The War Memorial we will be holding a candle-lit vigil between the hours of 10pm until 11pm. If you would like to come along and join us for this hour of quiet reflection there will be candles available, or you can bring your own. M&S are selling a special Centenary Candle with all profits going to support serving members of the Armed Forces, veterans of all ages and their families.

If you cannot join us at The War Memorial, please, wherever you are, light a candle or have a single light on at home.

Please come and pay your respects to all those who sacrificed their lives and their futures during this conflict. We Will Remember Them.

Sheringham WI

‘New adventures’ has been the theme for Sheringham WI recently.

Sculpture of an unusual kind came to Sheringham WI. Amanda Seales demonstrated her creative talents to us and amazed us with how crisp packets and old dishcloths and recycled plastic bags can be used along with Paverpol a sculpting medium to create impressive pieces of garden sculpture. Although many of us said we were so enthralled with them we would be more than happy to have them inside our houses. Amanda was so inspirational several are planning to take part in the workshops she runs at her home to create our own sculptures. A new adventure for us to embark on.

Following on the theme of adventures Daniel Evans has also been to visit us and talked with a passion about his love of geography and how he was awarded a scholarship by the Royal

Geographical Society to travel and represent what is geography. His travels through Alaska, the west coast of America and Canada had obviously had a huge impact on him and he gave a passionate talk about how we should be reflecting on the differences in the world and celebrating them. He also gave a heartfelt plea for geography to be more than naming countries and flags in schools and to teach children to be curious and ask questions and explore the many differences the world has on many levels not just landscape. For a young man of 20 he was an old and wise soul and an excellent representation of young people today.

Ladies who Munch have also be on their travels again venturing to the Red Hart at Bodham for an excellent lunch and a desire to return again. Lady Simone Harper also took us on an artistic venture in our art group successfully teaching us how to glass paint. A first for all of us.

Although we don't have a meeting in August.

we are off to the Time and Tide Museum for a day out and it is an exceedingly busy month for us. The 2 August sees us with a car boot stall at the Carnival Car Boot as our main fund raiser for the year. The Mad Hatter will be racing into town on Carnival Day for the children's fancy dress Mad Hatter's Tea Party - so sort out those costumes to take part! There are three age groups and cash prizes to be won. Make sure you're not late to Lifeboat Plain on 6 August.

The next day Lyons Corner House Nippies will be serving a traditional vintage afternoon tea at St. Joseph's Church Hall at 2.30pm (doors open 2.15pm) There's a fun vintage quiz and live entertainment to join in with and all for just £5. Get your tickets from the Carnival Caravan.

We are really enjoying our summer and have been very busy serving the many holiday visitors who return each year to North Norfolk and our loyal local customers who support us throughout the year.

The White Horse car wash on Saturday 12th July was a great success and we are delighted to be involved with Overstrand Together and looking forward to the Summer Fair on Saturday 2 August. It promises to be a really great day with lots of village stalls, childrens games, craft stalls and arena events.

Our garden is ideal for families during the summer months plenty of room to sit and enjoy the sunshine while the children play on the bouncy castle and climbing frames and with terrace seating and garden tables it is ideal alfresco dining. We hope that you will come and suport our Village Fair and look forward to seeing you atv the White Horse very soon.

ingredients 16oz Good quality Chocolate, 2oz Salted Butter, 12oz Granulated Sugar, 4 Large Eggs, 1 Teaspoon Vanilla Extract or Essence 2oz Cake Flour, Pinch of Salt 14oz Chocolate Chips, 4oz Pecan Nuts Chopped and Toasted.

Method Melt the 16oz of Chocolate and set aside. With an electric mixer combine the Sugar and Butter, add the Eggs then add the Vanila, Salt and Flour.

With the mixer still working the mix, drizzle in the melted Chocolate and add Chocolate Chips and Pecan Nuts.

Line a flat baking tray with baking parchment. Heat oven to 180c then with an ice cream scoop or two tablespoons scoop the dough about 8cm (1 scoop per cookie) place on the tray and bake for 10-12 minutes.

This mix is very versatile so why not try white chocolate and almond or milk chocolate and pistachio.

‘King Canute’ visits PROBUS

The first meeting of the new club year of Cromer and Sheringham PROBUS was attended by a latter-day King Canute in the form of North Norfolk Council’s Senior Coastal Engineer, Brian Farrow. Brian, whose background is civil engineering and who has been employed by North Norfolk Council for nearly thirty-five years, gave a fascinating talk on the battle to protect our shores and communities from the advancing sea in the past, present and future.

Under the title, ‘Coastal Defence Works in Cromer’ Brian explained how the sea constantly changed our shore line and showed with the aid of slides, the damage caused by the recent storm of December 2013. Although water levels were higher in some areas along our coast than in the floods of 1953, a better understanding of the sea and good forward planning meant that although there was significant damage to property and sea defences, there was no loss of life. Defences were now being repaired and strengthened where necessary and there is optimism about the future.

After his presentation, Brian answered questions from PROBUS members before Mike Osborne proposed a vote of thanks on behalf of the club.

Wife hands over rotary presidency to husband

John Williams is the new President of Cromer and Sheringham Rotary Club. In a rare ceremony, he received the chain of office from the retiring President – his wife Trisha. It is John’s third time as a Rotary President.

John, (79), lives in North Walsham and has been a Rotarian for over 40 years – initially joining the Chingford Rotary Club in 1970 where he was inducted by his Rotarian father. Whist at Chingford, he was President twice and served as Secretary for five years. In 1988, he moved to Dunmow Rotary Club before retiring to North Walsham and transferring to Rotary in north Norfolk.

In association with www.sheringhamdeals.co.uk

In 1981, during his first stint as President, John led a group of fellow Rotarians and wives to the Falsterbo-Vellinge Rotary Club in southern Sweden. His host Rotarian on that visit remains friends to this day and he and his wife regularly enjoy reciprocal visits.

Retiring Rotary President, Tricia Williams hands over to husband John Williams

John and his wife Trisha, retiring President at Cromer and Sheringham, have known each other since school days and have been married for 53 years. They have a son, two grandchildren and a great grand-daughter. “I am fortunate in having an enthusiastic and strong team behind me,” he said, “which augurs well for the coming year. Do read all about Cromer and Sheringham Rotary on Facebook.”

fun stories follow the adventures of different buses of the Little Bus Company in rural England.

The buses’ fun and antics take place in and around the village of Little Doing, with its steam railway, and nearby Bigtown. The buses get up to all sorts of adventures – Eric Turns Super Yellow, Michael Discovers a Postbus, Geoffrey Loses his Top, A Day at the Seaside, Rachel to the Rescue, and Buses on Parade. Each

story is illustrated.

As well as the buses the stories feature a number of characters such as Inspector Old Timer, Garage Manager Tracey Roots, mechanic Greasy Fitter and town chief, Mayor Cringeworthy.

Author David Hurdle

The 38-page ‘Little Bus Stories’ is on sale in Sheringham at the North Norfolk Railway station shop and Starlings, and in Holt at the Holt Bookshop. All copies are signed by the author.

Dear Margaret,

It was an absolute joy to attend the Annual Summer Flower Festival at St Andrews Methodist Church in Sheringham between 3 and 6 July. This year’s theme was entitled ‘Journeys and adventures’ which encompassed our individual lives, mirrored through the life of Christ. This ‘Incredible Journey’ was brought to life by 34 superb floral arrangements for all to behold and enjoy. This colourful spectacle was staged in a truly professional manner with friendly volunteers in attendance, offering helpful guidance to visitors. Our personal thanks to Barry Starling and family for their generous sponsorship of beautiful arrangements in the Communion Area, Choir and Side Chapel in memory of his wife Jackie, a lifelong member of St Andrew’s and a founder of the Wives group. Likewise to Cllr Doug Smith (Town Mayor 2010-2014) and wife Sammy who sponsored arrangements by the Cross, in memory of his father Aubrey Smith who was a member of St Andrews and a local Methodist preacher for 68 years. Having ourselves experienced the loss of a loved one recently, we found solace in the tranquil setting of the ‘Quiet Space’ marquee. So thank you ‘St Andrew’s’ for the pleasure given to us at your Floral Festival. Wishing you every success at your future endeavours, we will certainly come again Yours sincerely, Charles & Janet Thirtle

Dear Margaret,

On reading the Beeston Regis news this week I was amazed to read about NNDC decision for the bottles going into the recycling bin later this year. How will this work? We are told that some recycle waste is of no use if it is contaminated with food etc so how will paper / cardboard /tins and the like be free of splintered glass because if it doesn't break going into our green bins it most certainly will going into the dust cart? Surely we can keep our bottle bank at the bottom of Britons Lane? Plus where does health and safety come in? Yours sincerely, Mrs S Cowling

Ellie’s Love update

“All 10 of us completed our skydive, the other two are jumping in August. Ellie's dad Nick loved the experience so much he wants to jump again.

It was mind blowing, breath-taking and a very emotional day. Thinking of Ellie and how proud she would be of us all.

We had a charity buffet and auction evening that night in King’s Lynn, which raised a further £1,800.”

The next fundraising event is a barn dance for Ellie's Love on Saturday 26th July. Tickets now on sale. www.ellieslove.co.uk
