Cornered at the Mo

Walking my dogs along the prom in front of the Mo, I bumped into one of Sheringham’s Unsung Heroes, writes Eric Hayton. (See Mayor Trisha Brooks’ story on this page).

He is 70 year old Colin Seal - and he is responsible for the brilliant paintings on the walls all along the seafront.

His latest work features a number of characters from Sheringham’s past - if you pop into the museum, you can find out more.

Colin doesn’t get paid for his work, paint and materials only, purchased from Blyth & Wright with funds from the Mo.

“I love being out here with everyone watching, and the kids love it. Many of the kids have made a contribution to the work, a pebble here, a splash of colour there - something that will live forever or at least as long as the sea allows.”

“I won’t ever live long enough to feel old,” Colin’s motto, which means we can look forward to may more wonderful paintings in future.

Hot news - the seascape that got hammered by the storms last year, is one of Colin’s works and he is having a look to see if it can be restored. Keep an eye out for a fresh fish appearing soon as Colin tests the surface to see if it can still be painted.

SHERINGHAM TOWN COUNCIL

Unsung Sheringham Heroes

"Following one of my daily perambulations around the town a few questions popped into my mind," writes Mayor Tricia Brooks. "Can you help me answer them?"

■ Who picks up the litter left daily on Otterndorf Green? ■ Who takes down the old banners from the roundabout railings? ■ Who organises and looks after the flower tubs and baskets in the town? ■ Who puts up the bunting? ■ Who picks up litter on the beach? ■ Who keeps the sea safe? ■ Which two people lock & unlock the Clock Tower every morning and night? ■ Who safeguards our heritage? ■ Who paints the murals?

The answer is they are all volunteers; the unsung heroes of Sheringham Town.

“Do you know of anyone else who helps with the upkeep of the fabric of the town?”

Letters, comments and answers to the Sheringham Independent, email editor.tsi@rosevillapublications.o.uk or drop off at the library.

Station Information Board on Beeston Bump

Sheringham Enhancement Group (SEG) were delighted to receive a grant of £400 from the East of England Co-Op Society to enable them to produce an Information Board about the "Y" Station that was situated on the top of Beeston Bump in World War 2.

Local residents helped the group to compile the text and Neil from Graphic Edge produced the finished board.

On Friday 25 July the board was placed in situ on Beeston Bump and a small ceremony performed with members of SEG, visitors and a representative from our local Co-op enjoying a celebratory drink!

Sheringham Town Council has received a request to erect a World War 2 Civilian Memorial in memory of those killed by the bombing in Sheringham.

The Town Council are seeking permission from relatives and descendants of those killed in order to include their names on the memorial. Please contact Denise Medler, Town Clerk, Sheringham Town Council, Town Hall, Church Street, Sheringham. Alternatively e-mail to shercouncil@btconnect.com. 4

A copy of the Information Board will be placed in the Mo Museum so that those who cannot manage the walk up the Bump will be able to view the information too!

An official ceremony will hopefully be held in September.

Afternoon Teas The perfect way to spend an English summer afternoon and we’re delighted to be working once more with About with Friends this year to provide wonderful afternoon teas every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 2.30 – 4.30pm.

We do try to cater for all dietary requirements, even the less common, and we are finding that gluten-free diets are a regular occurrence for us now, even for afternoon teas. We make a real effort to try to accommodate everyone and most of our a la carte is now gluten free, although desserts are always a real challenge. Dan, one of our CdPs, makes the most gorgeous cheesecakes and he enlisted the help of Ann Graveling to come up with a gluten-free base that is probably nicer than the traditional biscuit base. Do come up for dinner and give it a try! As always 01263512412 to book.

Gluten free White Chocolate & Raspberry Swirl Cheesecake

THE BASE 25g Gluten free porridge oats 40g mixed pumpkin, sunflower and flax seeds 155g gluten free plain flour 50g soft brown sugar Pinch of salt 1 tbsp gluten free baking powder 2tbsp margerine (dairy free if desired)

2tbsp milk (cow, soya or rice)

1. Preheat oven to 200C/gas 6. Line two baking trays with parchment paper 2. Put the porridge and mixed seeds into a food processor and whizz until fine 3. Add the flour, sugar, salt, baking powder and margarine and whizz until well mixed; add the milk and whizz again until the mixture starts to come together. Don’t worry if it looks a little dry. Remove from processor and knead on a well floured board (If the mixture is really too dry, add more milk, but don’t over-wet it.) 4. Roll out to about 3mm (1/8 inch) thick and cut into rounds. Lift carefully onto a baking tray using a spatula and prick with a fork; bake for about 15 minutes until lightly golden.

1. Smear the base cheesecake tin with butter and line with parchment paper 2. Add sugar to soft cheese and beat until soft 3. Melt chocolate slowly over heat, make sure it doesn’t burn, add to soft cheese and sugar, turn with a wooden spoon 4. Add three sheets gelatine to 50ml of boiling water and beat with a fork until completely dissolved, then add to mix 5. Spoon cheesecake mix in lined tin, then fork in raspberry coulis to make nice swirl 6. Place cheesecake back into freezer for two hours to set

Serve and enjoy

Revolutionary non-surgical laser treatment for varicose veins. No more vein stripping! Coltishall Clinic is pleased to announce a treatment program for varicose veins.

EVLT- endovenous laser therapy - is a relatively new outpatient treatment that can be performed under local anaesthesia in less than an hour. It has been endorsed by NICE as the treatment of choice for varicose veins.

Varicose veins occur when the vein is not functioning properly to return blood from the lower leg to the heart. Each vein has a series of valves that open to allow the flow of blood to the heart, and close to prevent backflow (otherwise known as “reflux”) of blood back into the foot. The walls and valves of veins are thin and elastic, and can stretch due to a variety of conditions including pregnancy, heredity injuries, inflammation and age.

Approximately half of the population has some form of venous disease, and varicose veins affect about one out of two people age 50 and older, and 15-25% of all adults.

Previously, treatment of painful, swollen varicose veins required a surgical procedure called vein stripping, where the vein was

completely removed from the leg. It had a prolonged recovery period and veins could come back due to scar tissue.

The new laser treats the source of the problem, which then causes the varicose vein in the lower leg to shrink and disappear.

vein simply flows through other healthy veins after the laser therapy.

Coltishall Clinic also offers sclerotherapy and lasers to treat leftover spider veins.

The fourth Weybourne Folk Festival

Started a mere four years ago, the 'Webbun' Folk Festival is now an anticipated and well loved event on the local calendar, drawing singers and guests from all over Norfolk.

It stretches over three days, from Friday 15 until Sunday 17 August at the Maltings Hotel and as well as regular local singers and groups, now appeals to a wide range of styles and folk music. From traditional British songs and Morris Dance to American Blues and Bluegrass, 'Celtic and Western Rural Blues', singer songwriter, Protest, sea songs and shanties.

There is something for everyone including a comic and well loved 'Mummers Play'. As usual it is totally free (with the exception of the Ceilidh featuring the excellent Trotters Bottom).

For more details and the full programme see the Weybourne Folk Festival site on Facebook or at www.webbunfolkfest.com or contact Tony Baylis 01263 588781 or tonyandcarmen@btinternet.com for any other details.

Council wants you on its team!

North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) is appealing for north Norfolk based sports coaches and activity instructors to join its coaching register.

Following the announcement that the Council has received over £200,000 of National Lottery funding from Sport England’s Community Sport Activation Fund, it is encouraging people to join its coaching register to help deliver forthcoming sports projects to communities throughout north Norfolk.

The Council is committed to increasing its sports provision for people who currently have difficulty in finding local sports and exercise facilities and will be offering a selection of nontraditional activities such as martial arts, dodgeball and street dance.

Councillor Glyn Williams, NNDC’s Cabinet Member for Leisure and Cultural Services said, “The funding we have received to help develop our sports provision across the district is great news, and now we are keen to sign up local coaches and instructors to help us deliver some exciting projects.

“If you are an experienced coach or sports activity instructor with a desire to work within your local community, we’d love to hear from you.”

NNDC is also seeking to add to its pool of volunteers and is keen to hear from anyone who is interested in gaining experience in the sports and leisure industry.

Councillor Glyn Williams added “Volunteering in sport is extremely rewarding and you do not need previous experience to take part. It’s a great opportunity to gain valuable skills, meet new people and help others. All that’s required is lots of enthusiasm!”

For more information about how to become a volunteer or to join the coaching register, please contact NNDC’s Community Sports Manager, Colin Brown on 07917834960 or email colin.brown@north-norfolk.gov.uk or see www.northnorfolk.org/jobs

Art prize winner revealed by top actor

The winner of the third Holt Festival Art Prize was announced last month by actor John Hurt. Francesca Perkins, who lives in Weybourne, was announced the winner of the third annual Holt Festival Art Prize by Mr Hurt for her oil on board painting, Taking Water Home.

The Award was judged by Amanda Geitner, Chief Curator at The Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, the art adviser Nic Tyler, alongside Chancellor of The Norwich University of the Arts and former art student at Grimsby Art School and Central St Martin's, John Hurt CBE.

Francesca said ‘I’ve never won anything since I was 14 when I won a watercolour prize so this is a real thrill. It’s a great honour to have my painting chosen by such a knowledgeable and influential panel, it makes me want to paint even more than I already do’.

The judges initially selected a short list of 35 from 300 entries from all over the UK before choosing the winner from that list. John Hurt commented ‘This is a very painterly work by a very fine artist who is undoubtedly going to increase in stature. I mean I expect her reputation to grow and spread, her work is already of the very highest standard.’

North Norfolk Group of

Norfolk-born Francesca was schooled at Greshams before attending Camberwell College of Art and Design where she realised that painting was her first love. She subsequently went Diabetes UK

to The Old Guildhall in East London (now London Metropolitan University) from 2005-2008 and worked in London’s Bernard Jacobson Gallery before returning to Norfolk where she has been painting for three years at her studio near Barney. Along with two friends she founded the Coastal Collective exhibition at Wiveton Hall where she shows her work each year, and has also exhibited at London’s Royal Academy and Affordable Art Fair.

International Art Appraiser James Glennie, who has organised the competition since it began in 2012, added ‘I was once again delighted at the standard of entries which really does seem to get higher each year. Francesca is a very popular winner locally, but I must stress that our very experienced judges were absolutely unanimous in their choice.’

Francesca received a cheque for £1,500 and the painting will be exhibited at The Sainsbury Centre for Visual Art in the Autumn. The painting was purchased by an unnamed buyer before being named as winner.

Cantamus

Thank you, thank you, thank you to Waitrose North Walsham for their generous donation and to all their customers who chose our community choir and voted with their green disc. We plan to use the £290 to purchase moveable lighting for when we perform in the local churches. Our next performance will be our Christmas concert on 6 December. The programme of French and English promises to be a festive affair including pieces by Marc-Antoine Charpentier, famous for writing the music used as theme to the Eurovision Song Contest, as well as a selection of Christmas Carols ranging from traditional works such as John Taverner's 'The Lamb' and arrangements by John Rutter, to arrangements of Frosty the Snowman and a new carol written by our musical director David Ballard.

Cantamus will begin rehearsing for this concert on Thursday 4 September at 7.30pm in Southrepps Church. We are a very friendly choir prone to exercising our vocal chords in laughter as much as song. If you love singing do come and join us. No auditions are required. Our singers are of mixed ability, some extremely experienced; others whose only experience is in the shower and with our strong community spirit, you’ll be surprised how soon you become part of the team, looking forward to the Thursday rehearsals. As our members come from Sheringham to Stalham, Mundesley to Aysham if transport is a problem a lift share may be possible. For more information please contact David on 07785 782 498. We look forward to singing with you.

SHERINGHAM HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY - THE

The Annual Flower and Produce Show of the Sheringham Horticultural Society will be held on Saturday 30 August in The Lighthouse, Cromer Road, Sheringham. It is open to everyone. The hall will be open for the staging of exhibits on Friday 29 from 6pm to 8pm and from 9am to 9.45 am on the morning of the show.

As well as the flowers, fruit, vegetables, pot plants, floral art and handicrafts there are home produce classes so why not have a go and become Sheringham’s answer to Mary Berry or Paul Hollywood .

For example there is a class for a Marble cake and we even provide the recipe, as follows...

GREAT SHERINGHAM BAKE OFF

Ingredients 6oz butter or margarine 3 eggs 8oz castor sugar 1 and a ½ teaspoons baking powder 6oz self raising flour 1 tablespoon of hot water 1 level teaspoon cocoa

Put alternate tablespoons of the two mixtures in the cake tin and swirl with a skewer or knife. Bake on the middle shelf of the oven for 40-50 minutes until well risen and springy to the touch.

Method Pre-heat the oven to 350F/180C/Gas4. Grease and line an 8”/20cm round cake tin. Place all the ingredients in a bowl except, for the cocoa and water, and beat for two minutes until smooth. In another bowl combine the hot water and cocoa. Add half the cake batter to the cocoa mix and mix well.

commented strongly on the magnificent walled garden.

This walled garden was the scene in late July for a wonderful garden party on a beautiful English summer evening to allow the staff, and the dedicated volunteers from the Hall, the shops and gardens of all three sites and the volunteer gardeners to bid farewell to the retiring General Manager, Ray Sandham who has been in charge here since 2001.

Ray has had a varied career from a foreman baker after leaving school to Estate Manager at Bodelwyddan Castle after taking a year off to study at horticultural college. He joined the National Trust in 1999 at Claydon House in Bucks where over two years he helped increase visitor numbers by 50%. In November 2001,

at his request, he transferred to the Felbrigg role as Property Manager (subsequently upgraded by the NT to General Manager). When he transferred visitor numbers per year amounted to 49,995 whereas last season we welcomed 102,230 – an increase of 204% and we are currently on target to beat that figure this season.

This is entirely due to Ray’s unique personal vision for the properties under his control, his personal skills in motivating the full-time staff and the many volunteers who devote their time to Felbrigg Hall, its shops ( and those at the other sites) and the beautiful gardens at all three sites Ray will be greatly missed by everyone from the staff to the hundreds of volunteers but his vision for the NT properties in the Cromer area will live on with the appointment of Eleanor Akinlade who has worked with Ray for four years as House Manager at Felbrigg. Ella shares his vision for the continued improvement of our local properties and will be a worthy and popular successor.

North Norfolk Photographic Society

A record number of over 370 visitors viewed the North Norfolk Photographic Society's Annual Exhibition, held in Loades Hall, Holt from the 21-23 July.

In addition to many local residents, several visitors were holiday-makers and fellow photographers - including a couple who were members of the Southport Photographic Society and had travelled all the way from Lancashire.

Some 30 members of the NNPS exhibited their work which, in addition to the prints, included 75 digital images displayed on a large television monitor for visitors to view while enjoying refreshments.

Visitors were given a warm welcome by Society members, who were also on hand to answer their many photography-related questions and explain the activities of the Society. Visitors were invited to select their favourite print from the 86 in the Exhibition and the winning print - by a clear majority - was 'Morning Shower', by Paul Keates. This will be framed and offered as a raffle prize at next year's Exhibition. Morning Shower by Paul Keates

Following the public exhibition, judges Derek and Judy Leak, from Gorleston, selected and commented on 15 of their favourite prints and digital images, and then awarded certificates to the top three in both categories. They also presented certificates and prizes to the winners of competitions held during the 2013-2014 season.

Derek and Judy Leak praised the overall high standard of work and the way in which visitors had been greeted. They were also impressed by the wide range

of subjects, noting that there had been an appreciable increase in the number of wildlife photographs taken since their last visit to the Society three years ago.

The winning entries in the Exhibition were: Prints - 'Morning Shower' by Paul Keates and Digitally Projected Image - ‘Broad Bordered Bee Hawk Moth‘ by Roland Riddell.

Meetings of the North Norfolk Photographic Society are held on the first and third Wednesday of each month from 7:30pm in Holt Community Centre.

Cromer Academy Year 7 Emergency Services Day

On 21 July, as part of SMSC week, Year 7 students were given the opportunity to witness a road traffic collision in the car park of Cromer Academy. Students spent the morning watching Norfolk Fire Service, East of England Ambulance Service and Norfolk Accident Rescue Service (NARS) work collaboratively at a mock incident where a drunk driver hit a pedestrian and crashed into a wall. Blue lights and sirens added to the excitement of the day, as well as the chance to see the roof being cut off a car! After the incident, students then were guided through each stage of the scene, whilst questioning the members of the emergency services and getting the chance to sit in the ambulance and fire engine. All found this incredibly informative and applied the four strands of STEM (Science,

Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) to the incident as a whole. In the afternoon, students learned how a Major Incident is dealt with by the emergency services, and some even wore the tabards used on scene. They also learned about the work of NARS, a voluntary charity of Doctors and other medical professionals providing critical care at the roadside in support of the emergency services. After digesting their newly gained medical knowledge, it was time to put what they had learned into practice with some hands on first aid including mobilising a patient with neck and spinal injuries, CPR, the recovery position and the importance of monitoring. Students also were taught how to deal with emergencies that they may come across in the home such as diabetic coma and fitting.

On Thursday 17 July at The Dales Hotel, Upper Sheringham, Chairman Tony O’Shea welcomed 19 members and our speaker Lucy Downing, who told us about the work of “Visit North Norfolk”, an organisation set up to

promote tourism in our area.

Lucy is Norfolk born and studied media, film and journalism at UEA. Her introduction to the tourist industry was through marketing for Norfolk Country Cottages, but, when the Government withdrew its financial support for the promotion of tourism, she joined a new venture called “Visit East Anglia” and has now focussed her attention on North Norfolk. The aim is to raise the profile of the area and improve public awareness of its rich offer, especially in the low season of September till Easter. They have set themselves a target to put North Norfolk in the top 5 UK tourist destinations. The tourist industry in the area is already valued at £873 million pa and employs some 17,800 people, but it is widely believed that with such a range of exceptional environmental, wildlife and heritage sites, coupled with top class accommodation and excellent entertainment facilities, there is plenty of room for expansion. Lucy’s vibrant presentation attracted many questions and Les Sarton proposed a

WHAT’S ON

All students commented on what an exciting and educational day it had been and some have commented that they aspire to have a career in the emergency services with aspiring Firefighters, Paramedics and Anaesthetists. A huge thanks to Dr Drew Welch, NARS, East of England Ambulance Service and Norfolk Fire Service for giving up their free time to work with the students at Cromer Academy.

Dealing with Club business matters, the Chairman asked members to consider possible venues for the Ladies Christmas Lunch and confirmed the arrangements for the Joint Meeting with Holt Probus on 6 November. Ken Murray reported that the coach party to Bletchley Park on 4 November would go ahead with the pickup in Sheringham, and that he was pursuing possible outings to the Time and Tide Museum in Yarmouth and the Radar Museum at Neatished. Our next meeting will be at The Dales Hotel on Thursday 21 August. If you would like to join us for lunch, please call Bill Day on 01263 826083.

Give before you go

With the school holidays here, people are being asked to give blood before they go away, especially if they have the blood groups B Rh negative and O Rh negative.

NHS Blood and Transplant is reminding people to donate ahead of their breaks to help maintain stocks for hospital patients over the summer. Blood stocks tend to fall at this time of year as people get distracted by holidays and the warmer weather. Although overall blood use within the NHS has reduced, thanks to improvements in clinical and surgical practices, hospitals and patients still rely on more than 7,000 people attending a donation session every day across England and North Wales.

B Rh negative blood is in demand because certain ethnic groups are more prone to particular

diseases that require blood, such as sickle cell anaemia and thalassemia and a higher proportion of these ethnic groups are Group B Rh. Group B Rh negative blood can be given to B negative or B positive patients. Donors with blood group O Rh negative are typically known as the “universal donor” as their blood can be given to patients with a different blood group. This can prove vital in an emergency situation when there may not be time for an immediate blood grouping test to be carried out.

Derek Carr, Lead Donor Relations Manager for Anglia, said: “We know people are busy and especially in the summer but we’re asking that they remember those hospital patients who need blood to save or improve their lives. We’re asking our donors to please make an appointment to donate before they go away. “If you’ve never given blood before, why not

Sheringham History Group

On 2 July Sheringham History Group was treated to a personal history of Tony Colman's "A Childhood in Upper Sheringham 1943-1961". The talk revealed a history of Upper Sheringham and much about the man himself. It was a story of power, wealth and ownership of the Upcher family, contrasted with poverty, tithe cottages, and working for the Squire - the Colman family and others.

For many people poverty made conditions at home difficult. As a child in the 1940s and 1950s Mr. Colman expressed "it was like living in a medieval village". Although Lower Sheringham had piped water to each house, Upper Sheringham had the reservoir for all purposes for decades. Water was carried on a pole across the shoulders in two pails and human waste was used as fertilizer for growing vegetables. When Lower Sheringham had electric lights, Upper Sheringham was still using oil lamps.

Mr. Colman was born at 14 The Street and soon moved to number eight while his father was a cowman to the Upchers and toiled in all weathers. His mother worked at Sheringham Hall and for the rich of Lower Sheringham. Tony worked at Longs Fishmongers in Station Road and later for Bullens, the builders. He also caddied at Lower Sheringham golf course as a young man for, among others, the airman Douglas

make this summer the time you join our donors and make a difference to others? Each blood donation can potentially save up to three lives.”

Patients in need of blood in accident and emergency situations, patients undergoing surgery and receiving treatment for cancer and blood diseases, and women haemorrhaging in childbirth rely on blood donors.

You can find out whether we’ve got a session coming up in your area on www.blood.co.uk and book an appointment online to donate.

You can also register to become a donor on our website. Anyone aged between 17 - 65, weighing more than 50 kg (7 stone 12lbs) and in general good health could potentially start saving lives by becoming a blood donor. There is no upper age limit for donors who have donated in the last two years.

Bader. When Douglas Bader took a swing he would afterwards fall over. Tony would help him up and was inspired by Douglas Bader's attitude to life. Later, as an MP for Putney, it gave Mr. Colman great pleasure to be at the opening of the Bader Prosthetics Centre in Roehampton.

Other early inspirations were the Station Road Methodist Church, which provided scripture exams to pass (and books for success), the Oddfellows Friendly Society which invited children to parties where they were fed, and the CSSM which showed something of the world outside Upper Sheringham. Mr Colman won the lottery of the 11Plus and attended Paston Grammar School and then Cambridge University. After an international business and political career and a return to North Norfolk, Mr. Colman now works in and for Africa and is following up his recent UEA PhD to make sure all people have access to water and sanitation... which they did not in Upper Sheringham in his childhood.

Number of people in work equals record high – Norman Lamb

The number of people in work in the UK has equalled a record high showing we are on the road to recovery, says Norman Lamb.

The employment rate has never been higher as the number of people in work reached a record high of 73.1 per cent only hit once before in 2005.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) said between March and May 30.64m people were in work, 254,000 more than between December and February and 929,000 more than a year earlier.

In North Norfolk, there has been another fall in unemployment, with 689 claimants for unemployment benefits in June this year, down from 925 in May 2010.

Norman Lamb said: “Last month’s news sends a powerful message that this country is on the road to recovery. More people up and down the country are in work as we build a stronger economy and a fairer society. There are two million more people in private sector jobs, fewer unemployed young people and more women in work than ever before. Crucially, the benefits of our recovery are being felt here in North Norfolk, with increasing numbers of people in work. The Lib Dems have also reduced the personal income tax allowance, which has taken 4000 people out of tax altogether, and reduced tax bills for 26,000 people here in North Norfolk.”

Dear Margaret,

It is with sadness that I write on behalf of my family concerning the recent death of Peter Brooks, town historian and former curator of the original Sheringham Museum. I well remember Peter’s many visits to my late mother’s home at Beeston Common during the 1970s to obtain historical information about Sheringham and who better to interview than Annie Thirtle, born in the town in 1897 and a lifelong resident until her death in 1991. Ironically 1991 was the very year that the Sheringham Museum was established, in a row of refurbished cottages off Station Road. Eternal thanks to Peter and his sterling efforts to get this unique project up and running at that time. Pride of place in my library of local books is Peter’s signed copy of ‘The Book of Sheringham’, which I described through your letters column as ‘an exceptional read’ in November 2009. Peter once said ‘I strongly believe that local customs and heritage should be preserved for future generations’. This I fully endorse and will remember him as a wonderful ambassador promoting the proud traditions and history of Sheringham. Yours sincerely, Charles Thirtle

Dear Margaret,

The annual Flag Day of Sheringham RNLI was held on 19 July when the magnificent sum of £1792 was donated to RNLI funds. No expenses were incurred in raising this money. This was an excellent amount for a Flag Day collection in Sheringham – thanks are therefore due to everyone who gave their money so generously to help the worthy cause of Saving Life at Sea. I would also like to thank, most sincerely, all those who gave freely of their time in collecting for the RNLI and helping in other ways to make the day so successful. This is the fourth article in series on gifts and deals with some special considerations.

Where two or more people wish to make a joint gift, each individual donor needs to be considered separately. Where, for example, a married couple have differing children, their respective interests should be considered. Often there is a conflict of interest in terms of the advice to be given to the joint donors. Questions of possible undue influence become particularly important in such cases. Having sufficient mental capacity to make the gift remains as important as ever.

Very often the intention behind the gift is to avoid its value being taken into account in relation to means-testing for care home fees. What is often overlooked is that there are circumstances in which the value of the share of an asset of a person making such a gift would be disregarded anyway. The following are examples of such circumstances: a temporary stay in residential care; for the first 12 weeks of a permanent stay in residential care; where the home is occupied by a spouse, someone living as a spouse (or civil partner) or any relative over 60 or who is incapacitated; in some cases the local authority can exercise its discretion to disregard the house.

There is an automatic presumption of undue

influence where the person giving is the parent and the person receiving is their child. Separate advice is the best way of rebutting such a presumption.

The circumstances of the recipient are important too. The ‘three Ds’ (death, divorce and debt) each carry major potential problems. Add to that possible future mental incapacity and the risk of a family falling-out. This is a story as old as humanity: King Lear gave away his kingdom and was then shunned by his family. Gifting causes loss of economic power with all that can result. It is not unknown for a beneficiary later to forget or disagree about agreement reached at the time of the gift. Careful planning and legal- structuring provide protection for the donor. In order to protect a donor, a gift of their home may be

Labour welcomes 4G phone signal investment in North Norfolk

The North Norfolk Labour Party has welcomed proposals that will bring 4G investment to North Norfolk before the end of the year, but is urging companies not to lose track of ensuring 100% coverage in rural areas so customers can use the most "basic features of a mobile phone".

Both Cromer and Norwich are key targets for 4G from Three before the end of the year according to the company’s coverage checker, with the provider already offering 3G signal in a number of North Norfolk towns.

The local Labour Party hopes that other providers will follow suit and increase their 3G and 4G coverage in North Norfolk as it believes good phone signal and fast mobile internet is vital for tourism and business, and because currently too many pockets of the district cannot even make a basic phone call or receive texts.

Labour has written to Vodafone bosses urging them to make urgent improvements to their infrastructure in North Norfolk after more phone signal problems have dogged customers in and around Sheringham this month.

Jono Read, spokesperson for North Norfolk Labour Party, said “Three are the first company to earmark investment in 4G technology in North Norfolk and we hope this will now lead to other companies following suit. Having superfast mobile internet is vital for business and tourism in our towns, and will open up new avenues for the district.

However in the race for 4G these companies should not lose sight of ensuring rural areas have a robust signal to use even the basic features of a mobile phone like making a phone call or receiving a text message. Even in areas where there is signal the technology is dated and failing.

Again this month Vodafone customers in Sheringham have again suffered from signal problems that have been causing problems in the town for over a year, and we have again written to the company urging them to make the improvements that are desperately needed.”

North Norfolk Hockey Club Commences Pre-season Training

The newly formed North Norfolk Hockey Club, created by the merger of former North Walsham and Holt Hockey Clubs is gearing up for the season.

Hoping to recruit new players to help build on last season’s successes, which saw the women's first team finish top of the table, gaining promotion as division champions to East Women's Division 1N and not to be outdone by the women, the men's first team finished second to gain promotion to East Division 2N.

Anyone looking to play hockey in the upcoming season is very welcome at pre-season training: Mondays 28 July, 4, 11, 18 August, 1 September and Wednesday 27 August, all 7-8.30pm, £3 per session payable on the night. Sessions will be held on the all weather pitch at Cromer Academy.

The official club launch is scheduled for Saturday 6 September to tie in with England Hockey's National Club Weekend. Hockey related side stalls and activities will be running alongside an opportunity for people to participate in some hockey on the pitch, 11-1 beginners/juniors/ parents/all welcome and 1-3 new and existing members/experienced players.

For further information please email info@northnorfolkhockey.co.uk or call Jo Todd on 01692 404440/07500 962297 or visit northnorfolkhockey.co.uk

Suffield Annual 50 Bird Clay Shoot

This event, which this year will take place on 6 September, has gone from strength to strength since the first shoot was held in 2010 to raise money for the upkeep of the village hall.

Visitor numbers have doubled since then, attracted by cleverly laid out stands which provide just the right amount of challenge to ensure good sport for shooters at all levels of ability. The £100 first prize is another attraction of course, as are very good second and third prizes, but perhaps for many the real appeal is the opportunity to shoot in a relaxed local atmosphere against the backdrop of some of the best views Norfolk has to offer.

Beginners of all ages are catered for too, by a separate ‘have a go’ stand where novices can try their hand under the supervision of a qualified shooting instructor, who will even provide a gun for them to shoot with. And this year for the first time, visitors will also be able to try out archery if they fancy a more sedate approach to target shooting.

Stalls offer a variety of shooting merchandise for sale, and a BBQ and tea tent provides the ideal spot from which to watch the action, chat with old friends and make new ones - an excellent day out, not to be missed.

For details please contact Alex Honey on 07818 873709 or email shoot@suffield.org.uk

Tee off for children’s hospice

Holt Rotary Club are once again holding their annual charity golf day in aid of East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices (EACH). The confirmed date is Friday 15 August at Sheringham Golf Club. This will be the eighth time the event has taken place and organisers are urging golfers to sign up as soon as possible to avoid disappointment. The day, which will raise money for the charity’s Quidenham Hospice, will run using the stableford point system with the best two scores from each team counting per hole. Although the day will consist of teams of four, organisers encourage individuals and smaller groups to sign up as they can be placed accordingly with other groups. The cost per person is £48, which includes a meal afterwards. To enter email James - jamesgcoker@talktalk.net Rose Peasgood, EACH Norfolk Fundraiser, said “It’s great to have the continuous support of Holt Rotary Club who put a lot of effort into organising their successful golf day ever year.
