Ted Devils rescued by Sheringham RNLI

Covering Sheringham, the Runtons, Holt and surrounding villages in association with the Cromer Times and North Walsham Times

In front of a packed esplanade and promenade at Sheringham on Sunday 3 August, all six Ted Devils were pulled from the sea by the Sheringham RNLI volunteer crew.

After a hair-raising jump from the acrobatic Yak 52 aircraft, all six Ted Devil bears were forced off target by the prevailing offshore wind and ditched in the sea attached to their parachutes. The RNLI volunteer crew rescued all six and ensured that, in the spirit of

carnival, the subjects were rushed up the beach to be attended by nurses with oxygen and silver blankets, allowing them to be dried and warmed.

James Shaw won the Name the Bear competition, with Richie as his prize - once he'd dried out - and Alyssa Merrell won the £100 prize money for guessing which bear would land closest to the 'X' on the landing zone, decided by the RNLI GPS system. See all 70 boats together for one time only – and buy one…or two! North Norfolk has been awash with 70 bootiful boats since Easter as part of the Cromer and Sheringham Crab & Lobster Festival’s annual art trail and you will soon have the chance to own one!

For one day only on Sunday 24 August they will all be on show together before being auctioned off to the highest bidder, raising funds for local charities. On the same day the Festival will also be hosting their annual World Pier Crabbing Championships from 11am – 2pm as well as hosting an array of local market stalls along the promenade from 10am.

From Cromer to Sheringham and all the way in between the boats have been on the trail in open spaces and shop windows before they all go into the Grand Charity Auction on Sunday 24 August at 2pm.

The auction will be hosted by auctioneer Martyn Fox on Cromer Pier Forecourt. Martyn has helped raise over £29,000 on behalf of the Festival through the previous four Festival charity auctions. The auction will be the first and only time people will have a chance to see all the boats displayed together - they will be on

view from 11am on the day of the auction.

The 70 lots on sale, sponsored by local businesses and tricolated by local people, include boats decorated by artists Gita Dickenson, Paul Darley and Samuel Thomas, as well as schools and community groups.

The trail has received wondrous attention from locals and visitors alike who have taken on the challenge of the trail since it began. Schools, youth groups, business, organisations and many talented local people have produced a stunning array of quirky boats. Artists have painted, knitted, printed, sewn, adorned and transformed their boats in an array of methods and all will be up for auction. "The 2014 Crab & Lobster Festival has again shown the popularity of this early season event” said Festival Chairman Tony Shipp.

The Village Inn

He continued “hundreds of visitors and local families have followed the Festival Art Trail through both towns, the auction is your chance to bid for your favourite and is the climax to this year’s festival which has proved the most popular yet. We hope that locals and visitors alike will spend the day with us in Cromer on 24 August and take part in the Crabbing Championships before attending and bidding at the Auction.”

For the third year running the festival will run its Community Grant Scheme for local charities in the Cromer and Sheringham areas to apply to for the funds raised at auction. Festival secretary Kate Royall said “the Festival thought it vital to support charities local to Cromer and Sheringham which provide exceptional support to the local community. Over the past three years the Crab & Lobster Festival has donated over £29,000 to local charities. The grant scheme means we can continue to support local good causes throughout the two towns”.

Cromer and Sheringham PROBUS Club

When the Cromer and Sheringham PROBUS club met for their monthly lunch at The Links Hotel on 5 August, Chairman, Geoff Mather welcomed three guests who were interested in joining the club.

After the usual lunch, members and guests heard a fascinating and learned account from Dr Michael Bennett on the discovery of the Tunney Code used by the Germans during the war to communicate top secret information. Unlike the Enigma Code which was based on Morse code, the Tunney Code used teleprinter encryption and it is said that the work of the Bletchley Park Code Breakers in decrypting the Tunney Code changed the course of the war in Europe, saving many lives. Probus Clubs exist throughout the country to enable retired professional and business gentlemen to meet and socialise. If you might be interest in joining Probus please telephone Club Secretary, Gordon Hatchett for further information on 01263 826881.

Cromer Pier – Council announces refurbishment programme to tidal surge-hit assets

A programme to refurbish Cromer Pier’s box office, gift shop and the restaurant following the significant damaged caused by December’s tidal surge will begin in early September 2014.

Work has been completed since the surge to make significant structural repairs to the areas underneath the box office, gift shop and the restaurant which will now allow for a full refurbishment programme of both facilities. These areas felt the full force of the storm as waves hit the sea wall and were propelled up underneath the structure.

The iconic, North Norfolk District Council (NNDC) owned pier had already been the subject of extensive, £1.4million renovation and repair in the 18 months before the surge struck -work which potentially saved the structure from far greater damage.

Glyn Williams, NNDC Cabinet Member for Leisure and Cultural Services, said “The pier is a vital asset, not only for Cromer but for the whole of the North Norfolk area and helps to bring in visitors from all over the country.

“The significant capital investment in the pier structure helped to ensure that it survived the storm surge and all efforts are now focused on refurbishing those structures that are still out of action as quickly as possible while being mindful of the summer holiday season.”

The repair work will begin in early September to minimise disruption to visitors during the peak summer period and is expected to take eight weeks to complete. The pier will remain accessible for the duration of the works.

Oh So Quiet!

camera; something I had never used before but found was very helpful. The Leaf benefits by giving the owner low cost fuel coverage from just 2p a mile and exemption from paying Road Tax - now that is a saving!

This is the first impression you have when you drive the Nissan Leaf - their 100% electric car, writes Pete Smewin, the Sheringham Independent’s’ own Jeremy Clarkson.

I had the opportunity to test drive a brand new Leaf Accenta 5dr automatic supplied by Crayford & Abbs Ltd at Bodham.

It was extremely well appointed with very comfortable interior and impressive dashboard. It drove exceptionally well aided by impressive but easy-to-use controls. Reversing was also a revelation with the aid of a colour reversing

The one question that nagged and worried me was how easy is it to recharge and how many charging points were there? The actual refuelling is very easy and there are now more and more refuelling points, locally and nationally, and with the Government spending £41 million into improving the spread of recharging points this will only get better. You can check the points

However, at this time the offer for electric car purchasers are FREE Chargemaster Homecharge-I unit with FREE installation by British Gas which Crayford & Abbs will arrange.

I would suggest you telephone the sales team at Crayford &Abbs (telephone 01263 588160) to book your test drive and discuss with them the amazing offer we have negotiated.

Many high quality exhibits were on show. Gladioli and Dahlias were really high quality. We did not have as many visitors this year to come and look at our exhibits but with so many other attractions it is not surprising.

The figure of £420 (£417 in 2013) was made for the Senior Citizens Christmas Lunch.

West Norfolk RSPCA

Prunella is absolutely divine, we all love her! Not only does she have THE most beautiful face and amazing eyes, she is the most loving dog and has a lovely temperament. She is desperate for you to speak to her when you go near her kennel and looks pleadingly at you with her beautiful soft eyes.

Prunella is an absolute cuddlemonster and loves to have her belly tickled. She is very keen to have a fuss from everyone, but looks very sad and desolate when anyone leaves the kennels, as if she thinks she might have been going with them, poor girl.

She has definitely been someone's dog, big shame on them for leaving her to fend for herself, when she has clearly loved someone, somewhere very much and has been well looked after as she looks to be in tip-top condition.

Prunella is around 18 months old, is fine with other dogs, although will want to have you all to herself at home please. She could live with the children aged 10+ and is spayed, vaccinated and microchipped.

Prunella is absolutely desperate for a loving, forever home please and is broken-hearted to be alone and in kennels.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

When people call Stephanie to report a “stray” cat she explains to them that it is important to make absolutely sure that the cat is homeless and that all efforts have been made to find the owner as they may be looking for their beloved pet. She advises them to take the cat to the vets to see if it has been micro chipped, to ask neighbours if they know the owner/cat, to put a notice in Socks now settled back home and a local shop (if there is one) sleeping on his owner’s bed! and to contact the Animal Search UK website (this can be done via the Lost and Found Page on our website) to record the cat being found. We will also send them paper collars to put on the cat and these often result in the owner being “found”. A recent instance regarding a cat in Cromer springs to mind. Hopefully this particular cat will soon be neutered to stop him straying and fighting.

In the same week a lady contacted us with regard to a stray which had taken up residence in her garden. This cat, which had been there for a few weeks, looked quite thin, and was eating the bird food off the lawn. She told us that she had already taken the cats to the vets but needed advice as to what else she could do to make sure there was no owner out there, before giving the cat a permanent home. On our advice she quickly produced a notice and placed it in the local shop, and contacted the Animal Search UK website who were only too willing to help. As she had not known of this website she decided to just have a look at the lost cats to see if her stray was listed and was amazed to see a cat on there that fitted the bill (easy to see, as the markings were the same and it had a bent tail, just like her stray). Contact was made with the owner via the website and Socks in now happily back in his own home having been missing for 4 months. How he arrived in North Walsham from Thorpe is something we will never know. It does however highlight the fact that the stray in your garden could be someone’s beloved pet and every effort should be made to find the owner.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively you can visit

www.cats.org.uk/northwalsham

for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

If however you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher).

Bags, buckles and beads

by Charles Ludlam, from Tuesday 2 September to Saturday 6 September.

“The different plays require a variety of items of clothing and jewellery,” said Katie. “Shopping for shoes is particularly difficult – one task has been to buy a pair of very high heels for the opening comedy Funny about Love.

“It is hard buying some of these items without the cast members here. We do have their sizes but if for some reason the clothes don’t fit, we will have to come back in to change them!”

Schoolgirls from north Norfolk have been given an unusual shopping list and sent into Norwich to shop ‘til they drop and snap up a few theatrical bargains.

Katie Thompson, 16, from Knapton, and Anna Page, 15, from Aylsham, have been rummaging on shelves and sorting through hangers in the city to find colourful clothing for this summer’s repertory theatre in Sheringham.

The pair, who have been given a budget and a list for each character in the run, were invited to take on the shopping task after helping head of costumes Kathryn Flynn while on work experience last year.

This summer, however, they have been asked to take responsibility for sourcing costumes for all the plays to be staged at the theatre until Saturday 6 September.

Katie said “It has been fun but quite challenging having to find everything from small pieces to jewellery to whole outfits. To source what we need has involved going to a wide range of different shops in the city centre, as well as Norwich market.”

The season is underway at the Sheringham Little Theatre and continues with Neville’s Island, by Tim Firth, which offers contemporary comedy from Saturday 23 August to Saturday 30 August.

The final play of the summer repertory season is The Mystery of Irma Vep, a Gothic comedy

Working to a tight budget has also been an experience for the young shoppers.

“We have had to buy one character a full cycling kit,” explained Anna. “But we cannot go to a professional bike shop where they would have it all in one place as it is too expensive. It has been a case of looking around to find individual items that are much cheaper but when worn together will have the desired effect.”

Weighed down with bags of dresses, trousers, hats, belts, shoes strings of beads, the girls head back at Sheringham at the end of each day to see what will work and what must be brought back and exchanged.

“It is stressful at times,” Katie admitted. “but not only is it fun to be out shopping in Norwich but it is very rewarding knowing you will see everything you have bought eventually being worn on stage by one of the characters.”

The Sheringham Summer Rep runs until Saturday 6 September. For more information or to book tickets call 01263 822347 or visit www.sheringhamlittletheatre.com

Support for Sheringham Lifeboat Day Despite Bertha’s Best Efforts

In spite of wild weather caused by the remains of tropical storm Bertha, Sheringham’s Lifeboat Day on 10 August still drew enthusiastic crowds to watch the rescues and events. The day included cliff rescues, a life-guard rescue of a swimmer, casualty pick-ups by the Sheringham RNLI lifeboat and joint rescues with the Sea-king helicopter and the Cromer RNLI lifeboat. There were also model boat and truck demonstrations by members of the Norwich Model Boat Club, who were raising funds for the Sheringham Royal National Lifeboat Institution. Afternoon events concluded with the annual Lifeboat Service at the boathouse at 3pm, which also saw a packed house led by variSnr Lifeguard Francis Glazebrook & ous local preachers and the SherRNLI Helmsman Stephen Banks after ingham Salvation Army Band. pick up by Sheringham RNLI lifeboat in After watching the rescue of a ca- simulation of swim rescue. sualty who was lowered to the base photo courtesy Denise West of the cliff beside the lifeboat house, spectators then saw RNLI Helmsman Stephen Banks swim way out to sea to await rescue by Senior Lifeguard Francis Glazebrook. Having secured his man, both swimmers were then picked up by The Oddfellows Atlantic 85 lifeboat and brought to shore. The Sheringham boat was then joined by the Cromer RNLI lifeboat, which is an all-weather boat, and a sea-king helicopter. In the sorts of conditions which remind sea-goers why the RNLI is vital, various rescues took place involving all of the different vessels and the helicopter. Braving the wind and rain in their gazebo, the Face To Face team, working for the RNLI in teams around the country, were involved in talking to the public about their sea use, safety and ways of helping the RNLI in their fundraising efforts. They secured several donations to help Sheringham RNLI lifeboat with its future training and equipment. Donations were also forthcoming from the Norwich Model Boat Club who had a wide selection of impressive radio-controlled lifeboats, which they demonstrated in the boating pond on The Leas. With modellers from all backgrounds, volunteers from the club’s 120 members spend every weekend at shows or steam rallies, and have raised money for various lifeboats as well as other good causes (contact Josie at jj.stone@ntlworld.com). The day concluded with the annual service, led by the Reverend Christian Heycocks RN, and attended by the Mayor of Sheringham, Patricia Brooks. A full boathouse joined the local Salvation Army band in hymns and prayers, with addresses and readings by a variety of preachers and RNLI crew.

Sheringham RNLI volunteers in shop need help

The Sheringham RNLI shop in the High Street is looking for some reserve volunteers to back up their current rota of helpers.

The shop, which began in 1992 and sells a wide range of gifts and speciality items from small holiday trinkets to £120 boats, is open all year round, only closing on Christmas Day each year. For this the outlet relies upon its current 25 volunteers to cover the summer opening hours of 9.30 – 1pm & 1.15 – 5pm and winter hours of 10am – 4.30pm.

As Shop Manager Anne Little explains, the numbers currently helping leaves no reserves should people be unable to attend due to ill health, holidays or unseen commitments and it would be useful to have some spares to call on in emergencies or to share the duties with.

The shop evolved from selling items out of suitcases, to a porta-cabin on the Robin Hood car-park, and finally to the premises on the High Street, which provides a vital income for the RNLI lifeboats and training by selling a variety of branded and local items appealing to all age groups. Volunteers are usually paired to work in the shop and undergo guided training to allow them to settle easily into the demands of the selling. Anyone who is interested can contact Anne by either calling 01263 821601, dropping into the High Street store or by emailing her on anne.little@hotmail.co.uk

Britten Music Course Performs World Permiere

Gresham's International Britten Music Course finished on a high note when the 34 young musicians who attended the course, performed the world premiere of Patrick Hawes' Eventide in Norwich Cathedral on 12 July.

The piece, which was a community project jointly commissioned by Gresham's and Sheringham & Cromer Choral Society, also employed the forces of the world-renowned English Chamber Orchestra and acclaimed soprano Elin Manahan Thomas.

Conducted by Director of Music at Gresham’s Prep School, Nathan Waring and with an audience of over 700 people, the children rose to the occasion brilliantly. In addition, they performed a number of pieces including George Butterworth's Six Songs from Shropshire Lad with Tom Appleton (Monteverdi Choir and Gresham's Director of Music Outreach).

Eventide was written to commemorate the nurse Edith Cavell, who helped more than 200 allied soldiers to escape German-occupied Belgium in WW1 and who is buried in Norwich Cathedral.

The EDP called the concert an "impressively ambitious and moving tribute" which has seen planning and fundraising for the last two years, attracting major grants from the Arts Council England, Norfolk Big Society Fund, Norfolk County Council, The John Jarrold Trust, and the Gresham's Foundation among others.

It’s the 10th anniversary of the event held at the forum in Norwich and Icarus although very much looking forward to the competition has a problem to overcome.

“I need some help from the public to choose which flavour to enter. I can submit 1 variety but I’m not sure which of my 4 traditional style to choose. People can help me by voting for their favourite via my Facebook page. In return 1 lucky person will win a year’s supply of sausages.” said Icarus in his appeal for help. You can also support Icarus on the day of the cook-off by getting down to the Forum in Norwich on Saturday 6th September where breakfast or lunch will be supplied free of charge. The day starts at 9:30am with the winner being announced at 4pm. More details can be found at

www.norfolkfoodand drinkfestival.co.uk

and, more importantly, you can vote for your favourite Icarus

Also performed at the concert were two pieces by the late English composer Geoffrey Burgon, for organ, solo trumpet and choir. The trumpet performance was provided by 15 yearold Gresham's student George Jefford who performed from the organ loft so to give a magical and distant feel to the solo.

Eventide will receive its North Norfolk premiere on 8 November in St Peter's Church, Sheringham, when Gresham's will once again provide the children semi-chorus for Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society. Norfolk soprano Rosamund Walton will join the English Chamber Orchestra and the performance will be conducted by Nathan Waring.

It is the tenth year in a row that Holt Country Park, which, like the other two winners, is run by North Norfolk District Council (NNDC), has earned a Green Flag for being welcoming, safe, clean and well-managed.

In 2005, the country park was the first in Norfolk to win a Green Flag - an award that demands yearon-year improvement for the status to be retained. A new ‘wildlife garden’ has recently been added to the park. Designed by NNDC’s countryside rangers and members of Holt Day Services, it contains a range of ‘themed’ plant beds and offers visitors a peaceful and tranquil spot to enjoy the many wildlife species that thrive there.

Glyn Williams, NNDC Cabinet Member for Leisure and Cultural Services, said “North Norfolk has a host of beautiful open spaces and I am delighted that Holt Country Park, Sadler’s Wood and Pretty Corner Woods have attracted national recognition once again. The Green Flag Award highlights that our staff take great care in looking after our green areas for the benefit of the many groups, visitors and residents who enjoy them throughout the year. Cllr. Williams added “If you haven’t done so already, I’d encourage you to visit at least one of our free, award-winning spaces this summer. Our countryside rangers have a full programme of activities for the whole family to enjoy!”

The award, handed out by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, recognises and rewards the best parks and green spaces across the country. A Green Flag flying overhead is a sign to visitors that the space boasts the highest possible standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent facilities. Green Flag Award Scheme Manager Paul Todd said “We are delighted to announce yet another record-breaking year for Green Flag Award parks and green spaces. “A Green Flag Award provides national recognition for the hard work and dedication of all the parks managers, staff and volunteers who have helped to create these fantastic places for all to enjoy.

Quality green spaces are a vital resource for communities and that is why it is so significant that we have given out more awards than ever before.”

Holt Country Park, Sadler’s Wood in North Walsham and Pretty Corner, near Sheringham, have again been named amongst the best open spaces in the UK, winning the right to fly the prestigious Green Flag for 2014/15.

Holt Country Park was joined by Sadler’s Wood, just outside North Walsham, when it achieved a Green Flag in 2012, and then by Pretty Corner Woods the following year. Pretty Corner was awarded a Green Flag on its very first application, which is very rare and a clear acknowledgement of the excellent work that is being carried out by NNDC staff and dedicated local volunteers. The three sites are among a record-breaking 1,446 parks and green spaces that have been awarded with a prestigious Green Flag Award for 2014/2015.

News from the White Horse Overstrand with Head Chef Nathan Boon The summer sun is still with us that is apart from the odd thunder storm and rain but this is an English summer so what else should we expect. Our Village Fair on 2nd August was a huge success and everyone at the White Horse sends their congratulations to the organising team. So as we find ourselves in the middle of August our thoughts have turned to Christmas! We are in the middle of planning our Christmas Menus, Party Nights and New Years Eve.

We aim to have all the details finalised so that we can print the menus and start the promotion in the next week or so. I know to many of you this sounds crazy as we still have hopefully weeks of good weather ahead of us but in order to be prepared we need to plane well in advance. Last year our Christmas Party Nights booked up very quickly so my advice is as soon as you can request a menu and booking form and make certain that you get the date you want. Enjoy the rest of the summer!

Our dining club meets on the first Monday in the month at The Feathers Hotel in Holt at 6.30pm for 7pm and most months we have a speaker on a variety of subjects.

The Audio Visual Presentation at the last meeting on 4 August was of the highest quality. Mike Stew’s photographic brilliance is of course well-known locally and in this ‘Extravaganza Set to Music’ he assembled a series of amazing pictures - starting with the atmospheric natural beauty of Ireland and its renowned Annual Horse Fair, then the Morris men and women who every year bring the town of Sheringham alive with their music and dance, then close-ups and aerial shots of birds with their colourful plumage, and ending with the brilliance of the tiles, gardens and buildings in Morocco. Indeed it was a truly stunning presentation which was much enjoyed.

Our next meeting is on Monday 1 September and could be a carvery depending on numbers. We are seeking to recruit new members and, if you are thinking about coming, you will need to pre-book a meal beforehand. Please contact our Catering and Speaker Secretary, Mrs Christine Jackson, 01263 711502 who will be happy to tell you more about our dining club. An alternative number to ring is Hazel on 01263-838566.

Previously each household across the UK received a single form asking for details of all eligible voters within the property, but this will now be replaced by the new system which means the Council has to write to every voter individually.

Sheila Oxtoby, Electoral Registration Officer for North Norfolk, said “Most residents will receive a letter from the elections team to tell them that they have automatically moved onto the new registration system. However, some residents will be told that they need to provide extra information in order to register under the new system. It’s important that they now do this, which can be done at www.gov.uk/register-to-vote.

“This is the first time that people can register to vote online and it’s quick and simple. So, if you’ve just turned 18 or you’ve not registered before, you can now get online to register to vote.”

The Electoral Commission, the UK’s election watchdog, has called for the introduction of Individual Electoral Registration since 2003 as it will lead to a more secure electoral register.

Residents are advised to contact NNDC elections team on 01263 516046 or 516317 or email register@north-norfolk.gov.uk if they do not receive a letter by the end of August.

Selbrigg and Baconsthorpe

Timb Win er dow Now s Avai lable

It has been a good summer for wildlife on our local ponds. As well as the four cygnets that are still doing well on Selbrigg Pond, on the Mere at Baconsthorpe Castle a pair of mute swans have five cygnets that are looking very good indeed. Also there, moorhens have succeeded in bringing up a family, as have mallard ducks – there are probably others.

Returning to Selbrigg Pond, Mr Francis Feilden with support from the The five cygnets at Baconsthorpe with one of Norfolk Rivers Trust has their parents. Yes – there are five, but one of worked wonders with them takes a bit of looking for! this lovely stretch of spring-fed water. After the dam wall was renovated, the land beside it was levelled with topsoil and sown with grass seed (first phase done – next phase no doubt soon) and the bank planted with a mixed hedge where wild flowers have sprung up. The fishermen say the condition of the fish is first class, and the two grey herons and the occasional kingfisher echo that opinion!

More controversial are the revived plans to erect a wind turbine on Mr Feilden’s land where it rises to the north of the pond. Mr Feilden says that he withdrew the previous Planning Application due to problems concerned with Air Defence Radar and queries from Norfolk County Council, which have both been satisfied. It is no secret that a number of local residents were strongly opposed to the proposal, so it appears that the argument has still some way to run!

Future Radio Presenter and DJ Nigel Pearce from the Monday Morning Session last week interviewed live on air Jet Black drummer with The Stranglers who played at The Pavilion on 5 March 1981. Jet was still very strong about his memories of that night, and the audience reaction. He sent his best wishes for a successful night and promised that a couple of signed photographs of the band will be sent along with the band's good wishes … more great memories! The whole interview is available on www.futureradio.co.uk and just click on the podcasts section to find it.

This night will be one of a great atmosphere as there now will be three DJs spinning discs from the 60s up to the mid 80s Ex- Radio Caroline DJ Alan Thompson will be there along with Future Radio FM 107.8 Presenters Di Cunningham and Nigel Pearce. Local rock group U-Watt will thumping out rock covers from this period as well and there will be a display of albums from various bands that performed at this prestigious venue.

Adding a very atmospheric feel to the night will be Sally Burgers from Norwich who will be outside in her Burger Bar offering Hotdogs, Burgers both meat and vegetarian at very reasonable prices. She will also be selling Teas and Coffees. Pam Kilgour, Malcolm Birtwell, and Paul Watson along with Nigel who make up the organising committee report that things are going better than expected, and that is great news!

All this is available at the bargain price of £2.50 per ticket if bought in advance. They are selling fast and we can say that over half have already been sold. So get your tickets from malcypoos@msn.com to avoid disappointment. You can catch up on our facebook page for the West Runton Pavilion and see for yourself the buzz that is happening!

Dear Margaret,

The article about Unsung Sheringham Heroes was very interesting as I'm sure most people would not be aware that volunteers were involved. Which brings me to ask if it is known who is responsible for the care of the Franklin Hill viewpoint site? Last year when I noticed that the provided rubbish bin was overflowing all over the site I raised the matter with NNDC and it was soon sorted. This year I enquired at the NNDC again for the same reason, to be told that they were not responsible and that enquiries were being made with Sheringham Town Council, and that it could not be looked into until it could be raised at a meeting of the Town Council sometime in the future. I've heard no more about it. The site is awkward in that vehicular access is not possible for easy emptying of that rubbish bin and due to the amount of rubbish there a small team would be needed to effect a clean-up. A really lovely spot has turned into an eyesore. Perhaps a small article about Franklin Hill and how it came to be donated to the borough might be of interest? Yours sincerely, Andrew Stokes

Dear Margaret,

My father, Bill Davey, passed away on 26 July at Kingsgate Residential Care Home in Sheringham. He and my mother had moved there from Essex in April because of his deteriorating health. I want to thank Ginny and David Taylor and all their staff, and pay tribute to the extraordinary amount of care, compassion and love which they gave him in the last weeks of his life. Many of them have also given me support and words of comfort, not just at their workplace, but when I have seen them around the town. They have gone far beyond their call of duty. It has been a sad time but I have witnessed a wonderful side of human nature in some very special people. Thank you to them all. Yours sincerely, Gill Vickery

Dear Margaret,

Congratulations to the Sheringham Enhancement Group on the production of the information board about the ‘Y’ station situated on the top of Beeston Hill during and just after World War II. It reminded me how, as boys, we used to play in and around it before its demolition. However in reporting this event, your reporter refers to Beeston Hill as ‘Beeston Bump’ when all the information on the board refers t o Beeston Hill. This is a nickname that has crept in for the Hill in fairly recent times. It was on some occasions called ‘The Hump’ in the old days. I think, in reporting, it should be restored to its correct title and status of Beeston Hill. Yours sincerely, Michael Emery Sheringham Independent 398 August 23rd 2014

Sheringham BeachLife mission prepares for bumper crowds

The BeachLife activity outreach for children and young people will take place on Sheringham sea-front at the end of this month. The mission will build on the success of the last two years, and the organisers are gearing up for a bumper attendance again this year.

The four days of fun packed activity will be taking place from August 26 to 29 and the event is open to all, from toddlers up to age 17, but those younger than reception year should be accompanied by an adult. Activities will include sports, drama, creative bible teaching, crafts, beach games, inflatables, and a bouldering wall. The theme this year will be “Meeting Jesus”.

The fun will start at 10.30am each day with the “Beach Special”, where all ages will come together at the cliff-top marquee at The Leas on the Esplanade for music, games, drama and laughter, and to introduce the day’s theme. The children and young people will then split into age-groups for their “Going Deeper” to explore that day’s theme in more depth before breaking for lunch.

The afternoons will consist of beach games, team challenges and competitions, and a bouldering wall on the Thursday. The fun will conclude on the Friday with a carnival-themed afternoon and barbecue on the Leas, with music and circus skills. Last year’s finale attracted over 150 children and young people on the Friday afternoon, and the Leas resounded with laughter as they enjoyed circus activities, stocks, plate-spinning, sumo-wrestling, space-hoppers, and a bouncy castle.

Evening activities from 6pm for over-8s will include a family Tide Fight on the beach on the Wednesday, and a photo trail on the Thursday. Over 11s will also enjoy a quiz from 7pm on the Tuesday, as well as the “Sheropoly” competition around the town on the Thursday from 7pm.

“Last year’s BeachLife was been a huge success” said event co-ordinator Richard Allen, “Over 200 children and young people took part in some or all of the activities, and had loads of fun whilst finding out more about God. We cannot guarantee a repeat of last year’s glorious sunshine, but we can offer an exciting

Obituary -

Alan Woods 19.2.1949 – 15.7.2014

Many of our readers will remember the previous publisher, Alan Woods who retired in April 2012 when the papers were taken over by Eric Hayton of Rose Villa Publications, writes Margaret White. Alan sadly passed away last month. I started working with Alan in 2002. At that time the papers needed a bit of a makeover and together we embarked on a journey which was fun, interesting and hard work, especially in the early days! Alan had been involved with the papers long before I came on the scene and his love for them and commitment to them never changed, right up to his retirement when he was pleased to see them continuing through the new publisher. It was nothing for him to work through the night on a deadline day to get them ready to go to the printers the next day to ensure everybody’s schedule was met. A few years down the line Alan’s wife Linda and daughter Sharon joined our little team and they all became friends, not just work colleagues.

Alan had a dry sense of humour and loved nothing more than a ‘wind up’. Luckily after a while I was able to realise (most of the time!) when he was indulging in this - but not before he caught me out on several occasions! It was very difficult to catch him out in return but I do remember one such occasion when I emailed him my resignation with immediate effect at 8am on a busy deadline day. I then avoided his telephone calls and emails until 12 noon when it gave me the greatest pleasure to answer his umpteenth phone call with the words ‘April Fool’ – he had totally forgotten the date!! On another occasion I had been teasing Alan about him supplying me with a company car. After a few weeks he turned up one afternoon with my company vehicle, complete with signwriting – the fact that it was about six inches long, in a cardboard box and had a petrol consumption to die for just showed his humour! I still have my Matchbox car in pride of place on my desk and it remains very economical on petrol!

Alan had the proverbial ‘heart of gold’. My girls never went off on a family holiday without an envelope from Alan with some spending money in it. He would do anything for anyone, always willing to help out whenever he could. I could go on and on but I hope this gives you a taste of what it was like to work with Alan and the relationship we built up – he called us ‘the A team’. Along with everybody else at Rose Villa Publications I would like to offer my sincerest condolences to his widow Linda, daughter Sharon and family on their loss. And on a more personal note I would like to salute the man I affectionately called ‘Boss’. Margaret
