SHERINGHAM HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY FLOWER AND PRODUCE SHOW 2017

The annual SHS Summer show took place at The Lighthouse on Saturday 12th August attracting entries from both members and non members. There was a wide range of exhibits from flowers, plants, fruit and vegetables to baked goods and handicrafts. Despite a fall in the number of entries this year the standard of entries were very high demonstrating the skill and dedication of entrants.

Visitors to the show were impressed by what was on show, some even commenting that they had produce at home which might have sat well with what was exhibited, perhaps they will be inspired to have a go themselves next year.

Prize giving took place at the end of the day with the winners proudly receiving their awards for excellence in various classes.

For all your buying, selling and renting needs, give the Henleys Team a call on

A big thank you to all who gave their time and energy to making this another successful show and good luck for the coming gardening year.

Henleys Residential Correction

The article in our last issue should have stated that Henleys are the top selling agent in the NR27 and NR11 postcodes combined in year to date 2017, not NR26 & NR11. Apologies to Arnolds Keys’ Sheringham Office who are the top selling agents in NR26 & NR11 postcode areas.

Chocolate Cake

The World’s Biggest Coffee Morning in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support takes place next month with many events both big and small taking place nationally and locally. Money raised not only goes towards funds to provide support for those suffering from cancer but also to those around them. Did you know that if you hold a Coffee Morning and the money is paid into the Macmillan Cancer Support North Norfolk Bank Account then the money is ring-fenced to be spent in North Norfolk? If you would like the proceeds of your Coffee Morning - or any other fundraising event that you are holding for Macmillan - to stay in North Norfolk, please contact Diane Evans 01263 823889 or diane@opengolfclubcompettions.co.uk for

more information. Thank you for supporting Macmillan. Stuck for a recipe for your coffee morning? Try this delicious suggestion :Rich Chocolate Cake Ingredients. 50g sifted cocoa powder 6 tablespoons of boiling water 3 large eggs, 50mls of whole milk 175g self raising flour 1 teaspoon baking powder 100g softened butter 275g caster sugar For the icing 150g plain chocolate (39% cocoa solids) 150mls of double cream. Preheat the oven to 180C/160Cfan/Gas 4. Grease 2 x 20cm/8in sandwich tins and line the bases.

Brian’s Birthday Tractor Run for NNUH

Brian and Pat Cottrell recently presented a cheque to the NNUH following Brian’s 80th Birthday Tractor Run and Vintage Fayre.

(01263)

Blend the cocoa and boiling water together; add the remaining ingredients, except the chocolate and cream, and beat until mixture is smooth and thick. Divide the mixture between the two tins and level the mixture. Bake in the oven on the middle shelf for 25-30 minutes until well risen and springy to the touch. Leave to cool in the tins for a few minutes then turn out onto a cooling rack and peel off the lining paper and leave until cold. Make the filling and icing by breaking the chocolate into squares into a heat proof bowl and adding the cream, set over a saucepan of gently simmering water to melt together stirring constantly until completely smooth. (Do not allow the bowl to touch the simmering water). Allow to cool until it reaches a spreading consistency. Sandwich the sponges together with some of the icing and spread the remainder on the top of the cake.

The amount raised totalled £8.991.48 - “enough money to buy an ultra sound scanner for Prostate Cancer as in the photo”.

“We would like to thank all who donated and helped at the Tractor Road Run and Vintage Fayre at Briston including all tractor drivers and exhibitors”.

WHY CHOOSE WHY CHOOSE SILVER SILVER & WARD WARD SOLICITORS SOLICITORS in in 2017? 20 17 ?

“It’s a recurrent misconception that a larger firm is better.”

I am Clare Mayell and I own Silver and Ward Solicitors in Sheringham. I am an extremely competent and experienced solicitor. I appreciate that any time of the year can be a difficult time for many people to resolve legal issues of worry and concern, for example, making a will or Lasting Power of Attorney. As I have worked for 2 larger local firms I know what clients want and expect. My charges are significantly less than other solicitors in North Norfolk or Norwich and I provide 22 years of expertise and exceptional service. I pride myself in being one of the only solicitors who offffers a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, so clients can come in and obtain some initial advice and discuss costs and then make an informed decision. At a larger firm you just pay more. When a client rings or walks through the door they invariably get to speak to me as this personal and direct approach is important to my clients and I. I ensure complete confidentiality is an absolute priority. I advise new clients to “shop around” as I know that my charges are significantly less than other solicitors but I can offer the same expertise, if not better. I have and can act for clients across Norrffolk and the Country as we now have the use of Skype, emails etc. so it enables me to act for clients further afield. The reason that clients, near and far, instruct Silver and Ward is because of my expertise, exceptional service and competitive costs.

“I would say to any potential client with a legal issue or worry in 2017 to come and meet me face to face for a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, as you have nothing to lose but all to gain.

Home visits can be arranged or appointments outside of office hours including Saturdays. 0 1263 8 23465 or email clare@silverandward.co.uk 01263 823465

Miranda Marshall, Director, Hayes + Storr Let me translate: Could a text become your Will?

Recent headlines have indicated that people will be able to use voicemail and text message to make their Wills, under a radical overhaul of law proposed by the Government’s legal advisors.

The Law Commission has branded the current system of Will-making as ‘outdated’ and recommends that it be revolutionised to keep up with the digital age. At present, to be valid a Will must be signed by the testator (the person making the Will) in the presence of two witnesses, who are all together at the time and also sign the Will.

The new proposals would allow a judge to decide, on the balance of probabilities, whether a recording or a note is an accurate summary of the deceased person’s wishes. Even deathbed changes of heart could be recorded and used to override an existing valid will.

This sounds like a heyday for contentious probate lawyers!

However, like all such things, it is not quite as it first appears. The consultation document argues that this should apply not only to traditional written documents, but also where testators express their testamentary intentions Sheringham Independent 471

in an electronic format, as well as in an audio or audio-visual recording.

The Law Commission admits that these proposed changes could increase family arguments as relatives trawl through their departed loved-one’s technology for evidence of a change of mind to their benefit.

The consultation adds that: “A person who is seriously ill in hospital may have more immediate access to a tablet or smartphone than to a pen or paper, and may be more able to speak than to write. On the other hand, the potential recognition of electronic documents could prove a treasure trove for dissatisfied relatives. They may be tempted to sift through a huge number of texts, emails and other records in order to find one that could be put forward as a will on the basis of a dispensing power.”

These powers already exist in Australia, Canada, South Africa and several US states.

In the wake of these announcements, caution has been urged both by lawyers and olderperson’s special-interest groups amid concerns that the elderly and vulnerable could be even more subject to undue influence. Questions of updating tests as to mental capacity have also been raised by replacing current Victorian-era law with the principles of the modern Mental

September 2nd 2017

Capacity Act.

One thing is certain, however, that the hasty and ill-judged making of a Will can only cause distress, cost and delay for those left to sort it out. It is not the preparation of the document that is the main cost of a professionally-drawn Will but the benefit of knowledge, experience, attention-to-detail and professional indemnity insurance.

Visions of Vienna

The concert, presents the men and boys’ choir of St Nicholas, North Walsham - the last amateur men and boys’ choir in Norfolk - in an exciting and varied programme of music, with a first half built around two of the pillars of classical music Franz Joseph Haydn and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and then a second half featuring compositions across the breadth of English composition over the centuries.

There is guaranteed to be something for all tastes, whether a fan of classical music, choral singing or experiencing it for one the first times.

The ‘Little Organ Mass’ by Joseph Haydn is particularly renowned for its beautiful ‘Benedictus’ solo, which is normally sung by a solo soprano but in this concert will be sung by the boys line en-masse, adding a delicate beauty to it.

The concert is accompanied by Matthew Bond and directed once again by David Ballard who has now been Director of Music at St Nicholas since 2012 and currently oversees the choir of 18 boys and 14 men.

It is an exciting time for the church, with visits to Leicester and Norwich Cathedrals planned in 2018, and advanced plans for the formation of a separate singing line for girl choristers in January 2017, meaning that all youngsters in North Walsham and surrounding areas will have the opportunity to participate in high quality music making for free.

Admission is £7 for adults, and under 16s are free. Refreshments will be available, and all proceeds from the concert go towards funding the choir’s future activities.

Wizard new winter line-up for Sheringham Little Theatre Theatre director Debbie Thompson said “The Wizard of Oz is such a lovely story, but is not a regular traditional panto – so we look forward to doing something just a little bit different.”

A magical musical ‘road trip’ panto is the highlight of Sheringham Little Theatre’s newly-released winter line-up. A professional cast will chart the colourful tale of The Wizard of Oz, headed by Hana Steward in the lead role of Dorothy.

There would be surprises, special effects, a mix of modern and traditional songs, and a double dose of dames, during the shows which run from 9 December to 1 January, she added.

Hana, 22, from Wimbledon, has family in Sheringham and visited the Little Theatre as a child. She said “I saw the panto one Christmas, so appearing in the show feels so special to me. I cannot wait to spend this Christmas in Kansas!”

Details of the panto and other shows from September to April next year are now available in the Little Theatre brochure, and on line at its website.

Munchkin children are being Hana Stewart who will drawn from local dance schools, be playing Dorothy in the Other highlights for the coming months include : and auditions will be held in early Wizard of Oz panto at September for the chorus line Sheringham Little Theatre • Joan – 25 October – a piece of of farmhands and villagers anarchic cabaret which retells the encountered as the classic adventure follows story of Joan of Arc- with drag King Lucy Jane the Yellow Brick Road.

Free singing workshops starting in Sheringham September Mondays 2pm to 3.30pm at The Lighthouse, Sheringham from 11 September Following a very successful programme of taster sessions across North Norfolk earlier this year, Sing Your Heart Out (SYHO) will be starting a new SYHO North group in September at Lighthouse, Sheringham.

SYHO is NOT a choir! The singing workshops are drop-in sessions to promote good mental health and well-being, and are open to anyone over 18 who likes the idea of singing in a group. Singing with others really lifts the spirits. People with experience of mental health problems and challenges are always especially welcome. SYHO is run by volunteers but the sessions are led by experienced, professional voice coaches used to working with varied groups in a community setting. You don’t need to have a good voice or be able to read music. Join in the glorious

PEDESTRIANISATION

The Sheringham Pedestrianisation Working Group have held their first meeting to plan for a trial pedestrianisation scheme in the town centre.

The Working Group came together after a survey of residents earlier this year showed a significant majority wanted some sort of pedestrianisation in the town.

The Working Group members are: Judy Oliver, County Councillor for Sheringham and Beeston Regis, and District Councillor for Sheringham South; Dick Shepherd, also District Councillor for Sheringham South and Chairman of North Norfolk District Council; David Ward a member of Sheringham Town Council, who has been closely involved with the pedestrianisation idea from early on; Colin Seal who is representing the Chamber of Trade on the Working Group and David Hurdle a transport consultant who is giving the Working Group his time and expertise.

Judy Oliver said after the meeting, 'We have now arranged to meet with Highways to discuss what might be possible for a trial scheme and then develop a detailed plan. We hope this will meet as many as possible of the concerns expressed in the pedestrianisation survey returns'.

The Working Group is very conscious of the needs of different groups. David Ward said, “We are very well aware that certain groups have particular needs - for example we recognise that shops need deliveries and. some

residents need to shop by car. We are looking at all of those issues and special requirements to find practical solutions'. The Working Group believes that pedestrianisation will also reduce pollution. Colin Seal commented,' I am sure that having more pedestrianisation will lead to better air quality. We all want Sheringham to be as clean and as attractive as possible. We will look at ways to measure reduction of pollution during the trial scheme.' Dick Shepherd added, ' Sheringham has many attractions, including an excellent blue flag beach. I think pedestrianisation could be a further attraction for visitors and also be enjoyed by residents having a trial scheme is the way to find out.' The Working Group knows that there is much to be done before a trial scheme can be introduced.

David Hurdle, who has experience in the field, explained, 'Any change in traffic management leads to effects elsewhere. We need carefully to consider what a trial scheme could look like to ensure we

I believe pedestrianisation can help achieve that, as shown by successful schemes elsewhere in the country.' The Working Group intends to keep the public informed as their work progresses.

Sheringham Shoal supports surf life saving in North Norfolk

A grant made by the Sheringham Shoal Community Fund earlier this year has enabled the North Norfolk Surf Life Saving Club (www.nnslsc.org.uk) in Cromer to pay for volunteer training and purchase a range of new equipment, which will enable the Club to expand and train its junior membership.

The grant will enable 10 volunteers to take part in Level 1 and 2 training courses , and the newly arrived equipment includes junior rescue boards, training wetsuits, rescue tubes and CPR trainer packs.

NNSLSC is a Community Amateur Sports Club. It was formed in 2008 to establish a focal point for volunteers in Norfolk to train and improve their life saving skills whilst enjoying the stunning Norfolk coastline. It currently trains three junior age groups from 7-16 years.

NNSLSC President Mike Snelling said "Our members dedicate over 900 hours each year volunteering with the club, with over 1,000 visits to our club house to use the facilities, and over 250 hours are spent delivering Junior Lifeguard beach and water safety to the under 14s."

Tom James is the General Manager of the Sheringham Shoal Offshore Wind Farm, and he was delighted that the Community Fund panel awarded this grant, saying "The NNSLSC junior lifesaving programme provides a valuable education and development path for those who participate, and it is good to hear that, each year, a growing number of these young people go on to full time employment on local beaches and with the RNLI."

NENBC SEAWATCH

Following a sea bird identification workshop held in July in preparation for our co-ordinated seawatch events being held in August and October; members took part in the first event. Teams from the North East Norfolk Bird Club set up at Weybourne, W Runton, Cromer, Sheringham, Mundesley and Happisburgh to record all passing sea birds in a 3 hour period.

Team Weybourne 08/08/17:

Our team of Alan, Tina, Anthony, Pete & Sue, and me assembled at the entrance to Weybourne Camp at 6am. By 6.15 we were all set up, sitting on an elevated section just behind the coastal footpath with our ‘scopes ready to scan the vast expanse of the North Sea. Keeping an eye on a large and threatening black cloud that was drifting towards us from the north, we began to count the passing birds offshore. The birds of the day were clearly going to be Gannets with no less than 33 flying west in the first ten minutes, and a final three-hour total of just under 300. Common Scoters were the second most numerous species, although most were passing several miles offshore. Waders were very scarce and the highlights were four Little Gulls and an adult Hobby. The expected rain never materialized and after the requisite three hours of seawatching, we took a walk around the camp and were delighted to find a juvenile Black Redstart and Cuckoo, while four Black-tailed Godwits flying east were a bonus. All in all, a most enjoyable and rewarding morning. Moss

Team Mundesley 08/08/17:

It was raining hard when we packed the car at 5.00am with no wind. We collected our dear friend Gordon on time and arrived early at our site in the beachfront shelter at Mundesley. After unpacking the car-boot cafe and equipment, we pondered the most interesting birds arriving before the 6.30am start. Denise and Alan arrived on cue and the gannet-fest began and all sharp eyes remained peeled throughout, although I abandoned my post for the car park top-up, the loos next door and then was accosted by the cafe owner to know what we were doing; 7 minutes in all! Our newest recruit, Denise, called the two darker looking birds coming right low over the water close to two terns; our only arctic skuas of the morning as it turned out; top spot. Whilst we had all been admiring the cloud formations, which were quite spectacular at times; four grey herons caused quite a stir as we did not see exactly where they came from. The morning sped by with observation of the passing vessels becoming part of the enjoyment, when the birds were absent. All agreed it was an enjoyable sea watch, with Denise and Alan saying they will be back in October for the next one. My only disappointment was that nobody finished the freshly baked cheese scones but thanks to all involved. Lin

Kelling Probus Club

Kelling Probus Club held its August Meeting at The Dales Hotel Upper Sheringham on 17 August.

Chairman Ken Murray welcomed 22 members and the guest speaker Jim Ring. After a tasty lunch, he called on Jim to talk on 'The Invasion Of Norfolk'.

Jim, who is an author and lives locally, started his career writing the FT textbook on Advertising. Since then he has written books and wartime stories, fictional but based on facts.

Jim's talk was based on what if Norfolk had been invaded during the World Wars. He talked about the fortifications that still exist,on the north Norfolk coast, and its vulnerability if a seaborne attack had been launched, certainly in WW1. The defences were very limited, and such devices as pens of pheasants behind the dunes to warn of approaching enemy were common.

He mentioned the deep water at Weybourne Hope and the gentle beaches as places where a landing could be executed.

During one February day in 1915, a rapid panic that the Germans had landed rocked Weybourne.

There was no doubt that in both European wars the enemy had plans to land in North Norfolk, the defences were limited and very often no more than home guard volunteers with little weaponry.

Britain's morale was lower in the world in 1939, and enthusiasm, and our armaments, were nowhere near as good as the Germans. Fortunately, our victory in the Battle of Britain, and a build of strength in the nation, prevented this invasion.

Jim has recently written a novel called 'Queens Ransom', which fictionally envisages what might have happened in Norfolk if the invasion had occurred.

Jim was thanked for an excellent talk by Terry Penrose.

Dear Readers

On behalf of the Norwich Castle Museum, I am seeking out anybody who can remember a day in October 1939 when a live German mine washed up on a patch of the idyllic Sheringham coast.

Talented local photographer Harry Tansley was on hand to document the occasion (please see the attached photograph), as the intrepid kids of Sheringham go to investigate the mine, very likely once it had been deactivated!

Do you know anyone who remembers that day or was there with Mr Tansley when he took his iconic photograph kindly provided by the Cromer Museum?

I am seeking to record via a dictaphone conversation any recollection that people have of Mr Tansley, or of that particular event. Those recollections would then become a component to an artwork that will be exhibited within the Norwich Castle Museum's up and coming 'We Came Here to Conquer exhibition', an exciting exhibition of contemporary art made in response to the museum’s incredible print collection.

My artwork calls on large scale intaglio etching and audio accounts to represent where a number of different people across the world were on or around September 1939, the month that the Second World War broke out. Locations so far include Manchester, Berlin, Northern Ireland and hopefully Sheringham!

The exhibition opens on 25 September and runs until March 2017, and is adjacent to an amazing show of Rembrandt's etchings, so there will be a lot to see at the Castle during this time! I can be contacted on 07494 475673 or matthew.benington@network.rca.ac.uk Matthew Benington

Sheringham South Spot

Did you know that north Norfolk is officially classified as a desert!? We have less rain than Tunisia and Morroco! There are many that may not believe this but it's true! Got to say that the gardens are looking great and Judy Oliver and I are offering a prize for the "most improved", thanks to the good offices of Sheringham in Bloom. Best I can do is cooking apples the size of footballs!

Since donning the a-Political Chain of Chairman NNDC I can speak freely of the soaking I got at the Carnival as Marshall (we got the short straw), but what a parade, hundreds of children walking, great floats and eventually a break in the rain! A great atmosphere and all down to a marvellous Carnival committee, plus the people of Sheringham with the staying power to make the occasion fun and worth it!

Just a quick word on rural crime. Since our Police commissioner has taken office, we have seen several arrests for church lead and farm machinery. There is now a dedicated team but they do rely upon YOU and the spotting of parked up or even farm machinery on a low loader travelling at night. Don't be afraid to call 999! Have a walk past your church in the evening.

Finally, Judy and/or I are available as usual at the Community Centre Fridays from 12noon to 1pm on Aug 25th, Sept 29th, Oct 20th and Nov 24th. Please call and have a moan, that's what we're here for! My home number is 01263 824662. Meanwhile, an Indian Summer is on the way! Dick Shepherd

Bittern Line 20th Anniversary An organisation that promotes a Norfolk railway line celebrated its 20th anniversary by holding a week long series of events. The Bittern Line Community Rail Partnership CRP), which helps to promote and develop the Norwich to Sheringham rail line, celebrated its 20th anniversary with special events, including live music, guided walks and craft sessions. More celebrations are planned for later in the year, too.

our 20th birthday. 50 years after closure of the line was contemplated, the Partnership, with support from the communities we serve, has ensured that the line has gone from strength to strength. “This is an opportune time for rail travel between Norwich and Sheringham with a growing population in towns and villages along the route and brand new longer trains arriving shortly."

Over the last 20 years, the CRP has played an invaluable role in supporting and developing projects to promote the line, build community links, improve station facilities and upgrade train services.

As a result, passenger journeys on the line have more than tripled since 1997 from around 200,000 journeys a year to more than 600,000 journeys a year.

Jonathan Denby, Head of Corporate Affairs for Greater Anglia said “We’re very pleased to be celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Bittern Line Community Rail Partnership. The CRP has been a great success, working closely with successive train operators to help promote and develop the Norwich to Sheringham line. Its proactive support has strengthened local links and has helped to increase passenger journeys on the line over the last two decades. With the prospect of brand new, high quality trains in 2019/20, there are great opportunities for the CRP to help the line continue to thrive, to the benefit of both customers and local communities.”

Peter Mayne, Chairman of the Bittern Line CRP said "We are hugely proud and excited to be celebrating

coast.

The Bittern Line CRP was launched in 1997, as part of a joint initiative between Anglia Railways and Norfolk County Council, aimed at revitalising the important rail link between Norwich and the North Norfolk

It has also helped successive train operators to significantly increase service frequency on weekday afternoons, evenings and at weekends, provide additional station facilities such as ticket machines, customer information screens and cycle parking and enhance community links, with additional capacity for special events and better coordination for Paston College students.

The line is set to benefit from significant investment during Greater Anglia’s nine year franchise. The operator plans to introduce a complete new fleet of trains in 2019/20, with more seats, air conditioning, wi-fi and plug points. Greater Anglia also plans to install ticket machines at all stations on the route, providing even more opportunities to encourage rail travel and support tourism and the local economy.

Greater Anglia, which is the major funder of the CRP, has recently increased its financial support, as part of its new franchise, whilst the CRP also benefits from support from local authorities including Norfolk County Council, Broadland District Council and North Norfolk District Council. The CRP also works closely with attractions along the route including the Bure Valley Railway and the North Norfolk Railway and connects with the Coast Hopper bus service to make public transport a convenient option for many journeys in North Norfolk.

SHERINGHAM AND CROMER LIONS CLUB

At our next Business Meeting, to be held at the Morley Club in Sheringham on 12 September at 7pm we hope to present cheques financed by our fundraising throughout the year to Prostate Cancer UK, East Anglian Air Ambulance, Age UK (Norfolk) and Roughton Junior Play Group.

For those who are unfamiliar with the Morley Club on the main road near to the roundabout in Sheringham I can recommend a visit to find out what they have to offer. The environment is very nice and you will receive a friendly welcome. Bowls, darts and snooker are also on offer. We have held all our meetings there for over six years plus social events.

Events this year will have included four days at the Cromer Carnival with children’s games and a Tombola. Apart from up and coming collections we will be manning the Car Park at Mannington Hall on 3 September to assist Lord and Lady Walpole with their Charity Day. On Tuesday 26 September there will be a Fashion Show at M&Co, Church Street, Cromer. Tickets are £5 per person and will be available on the night and will include a complementary drink. This is a popular event, so make a note in your diary to join us and help raise some money.

We are also holding a Festival of Choirs in St. Peter’s Church, Sheringham at 7 pm on 11 November, which is Armistice Day. Refreshments will be provided and proceeds from ticket sales (£5 per person) will go to this year’s President’s charity of choice the British Heart Foundation.

We have events planned before Christmas and watch this space as we have lots of fun new ideas for fund raising for 2018. Liz Bowler, Press Officer 26

Love for Leo

It has been a very busy time since January selling the 60/40 Carnival Raffle tickets. We sold 400 tickets and the lovely Caravan personnel sold another 30 tickets for Love for Leo. This meant we banked ÂŁ258 for Love for Leo and Andrew Dawson, our delighted winner received the nice sum of ÂŁ172.We could not have done this without the help of Tesco, especially Sue Lowe, and the managers, who allowed us to sell tickets in the foyer and provided table, chairs and even cups of tea. So a big thank you to Tesco, the Carnival Committee and Roy Boys who paid for the raffle tickets. There were no expenses for the charities.

We are coming to the 40s weekend again on 16 and 17 September. Moss and Robina will be having their annual tombola with, as usual, excellent prizes on Saturday 16th. Look out for the stall this year it will be near the Town Clock weather permitting. Many thanks to all who so generously donate prizes, all good quality and very gratefully received.

Money raised helps Norfolk and Suffolk children with cerebral palsy. Recently Moss and Robina were delighted to fund the purchase of a lightweight wheelchair for a young girl, which has enabled her to more easily enjoy family outings and school trips. Applications for help are welcomed.

For any information or to donate tombola prizes please contact Moss on 01263 823637, email moss.taylor@btinternet.com or Robina on 01263 823588, email reacgenet@btinternet.com. Sheringham Independent 471

Protecting your dog against Ticks this year

East Anglia is a beautiful area, however, it is also an area classified as “high risk” for ticks. Ticks are most active between mid-March and October, however, with changes in the climate they are becoming active for longer. The most frequently seen tick is the sheep tick although the hedgehog and fox ticks may also make an appearance. All of these species of tick will feed on dogs, cats and humans.

Ticks are unable to jump or fly and travel by climbing on vegetation such as long grass and then waiting for a suitable host to pass by. They attach to this host using their hooked front legs. Following attachment, ticks will spend time choosing a suitable feeding site before attaching to feed via their mouth parts. As ticks take time to attach the act of brushing pets following a walk can reduce the number of ticks actually attaching. Tick bites are usually painless and attaching ticks are often as small as 1.5mm and will increase to the size of a pea after feeding. Not all ticks carry disease, but for infected ticks the action of attaching allows them to transmit diseases such as lymes disease, babesiosis, anaplasmosis and rickettsiosis to the host. The risk of infection transmission increases the longer the tick is attached to the host.

How can we protect our pets? In order to reduce the spread of tick borne disease we recommend regular tick prevention treatments. These come in the form of tablets, collars and spot-on preparations and will usually kill ticks within 12-24 hours of attachment and last for between four and 12 weeks depending on the

product chosen. Many of the most effective treatments can only be prescribed by a veterinary surgeon and so we would advise contacting your vet to discuss the most suitable treatment for your pet. At Toll Barn Vets, North Walsham, we understand that choosing the correct flea and tick protection for your pet is a minefield and so offer our clients free of charge parasite protection consultations with our qualified veterinary nurses to enable us to formulate the perfect parasite prevention program for your pet.

Ticks found on your pet should be removed as soon as possible using a tick remover to ensure that the mouth parts do not remain within the skin once the body of the tick is removed. At Toll Barn Vets tick removal is one of our free of charge procedures for our clients to help keep your pets in tip top condition.

The Tick Tick List! • Ensure pets are treated regularly with an effective tick treatment as per manufacturers guidelines • Brush or wash pets after walks to remove unattached ticks • Check pets thoroughly daily and contact your vet if any attached ticks are found • Remove any attached ticks as soon as possible after finding them

Don’t forget, we are here to help so if you are battling with keeping your pet tick free this year please give the Toll Barn Vets team a call on 01692 407126.

Hedgehog Haven

Hedgehogs are nocturnal animals - they only come out during the day if there is a problem unless it seems to have a purpose and is going somewhere.

Second litters are now being born, so an active hedgehog could be a sign of a mother out foraging while her hoglets are asleep.

If in doubt please ring a rescue centre or BHPS for advice.

Following the inspiring visits this summer by Helen Roberts and Debra Green, Lighthouse Community Church in Sheringham has lined up two more worship evenings with high profile speakers to take place in September and October. North Norfolk District Council-funded scheme aims to build on last year’s fantastic success

Parents of children preparing to start secondary school are being encouraged to put forward nominations for a sporting excellence programme in North Norfolk.

Last year’s inaugural Sporting Centre of Excellence scheme proved to be a great success, and North Norfolk District Council is funding the project once again this September. The aim is to recruit young people who have the potential to excel in a sport and give them an excellent coaching experience and the opportunity to achieve their sporting dreams. This year’s scheme will start at the beginning of the forthcoming academic year, with a focus on attracting Year 6 pupils starting high school. The pilot in 2016 saw more than 70 youngsters, aged 11 to 14, attend 24 weeks of coaching at Gresham’s School, Holt. They were given specialist coaching across four sports - hockey, netball, cricket and running.

The success of the programme resulted in nine athletes being selected to represent Norfolk in cross-country, a haul of medals at the Norfolk Track and Field Championships, three cricketers picked for county squad training sessions and hockey and netball players invited to join top clubs. All the district’s secondary schools were represented and, perhaps most importantly,
