NEW EYES AND EARS FOR SHERINGHAM COASTWATCH

on selected dishes only)

Early in April, Sheringham Coastwatch Station’s elderly radar, AIS, radio and weather equipment was replaced with new units.

From aerials and sensors on the roof, to a purpose-built console in the Station, all was renewed. After many years of sterling service, the old apparatus had become difficult to maintain.

The exercise cost £5,500 and was made possible by the generosity of many donors and a 50% grant from the Windfarm Foundation.

From the decision to go ahead to the first operational watch took six months. The complexities of design, planning, construction and installation were undertaken in-house by watchkeepers David Houghton, David Bean and Graham Williams. If you’re walking on the cliff path to the west of Sheringham, a knock at the Station door might enable a look at the new equipment.

10th Birthday party for Weybourne WI

There was a lively gathering at Weybourne Village Hall on Wednesday 4 April, when members celebrated the 10th birthday of Weybourne WI. Visitors from neighbouring WIs at Holt, Cley, Sheringham, Cromer, Briston and Roughton were also in attendance. Photographs and press cuttings relating to early meetings in 2008 were on display. Coral Batchelor, WI Adviser, gave a short speech and recalled how she had been involved with helping to set up Weybourne WI. Kath Griffiths presented her with a posy of flowers.

After a short business meeting, musical entertainment was provided by ‘Chandler and Green’, who sang a variety of songs from the 50s, 60s and 70s, which soon had several members up on the dance floor and many others singing along. A selection of cakes were provided for afternoon tea. Proceeds from the raffle were donated to the chosen charity for 2018, which is Weybourne Horticultural Society.

A vote of thanks was given by Barbara Young. Several members commented on what an enjoyable afternoon it had been.

Brilliant Broadland in WW1 must see exhibition on now!

At the Museum of the Broads we are proud to announce that our new exhibition is now open and is on until Armistice Day, Sunday 11 November.

It not only covers the local men who fought, but also looks at life on the home front. Did you know the first ever air raid was a bomb dropped from a Zeppelin on a Broadland village? The role of women is also covered in the exhibition looking at their various roles, including the Women’s Land Army.

SMARTREPAIR with Chris

Chris Jerret has recently joined our SMARTREPAIR team working from Bodham and Mundesley, alongside a mobile unit.

The exhibition includes a film made in 2014 with local people and Stalham High School. It has some fascinating artefacts, and some great stories including 2 lovely love stories.

The Museum has been thoughtfully put together and is decorated by a number of handmade poppies produced by some of our volunteers and friends, commemorating relatives who served.

Special events this month include the Boat and Fishing Jumble on Sunday 13 May. Why not pop along and grab a bargain.? This is part of the Broads Outdoor Festival. Our Emergency Services Day is on Sunday 27 May with Broads Authority, Hemsby Lifeboat/Inshore rescue, HMS coastguard, Norfolk Police, local council and RNLI attending. It’s going to be a very interesting day. Go on#makeitstalham this May. Neil Storey who opened our annual exhibition, Broadland During the First World War

MAYTIME MEDLEY Art Exhibition

The very pretty St Margaret’s church in Thorpe Market will once again be hosting an exciting and eclectic art exhibition and sale of work by three local artists Friday 4 to Monday 7 May, 11am to 4pm daily.

Chris was previously Coredale Cromer’s Bodyshop Manager and has worked in the bodycentre business most of his life.

He is working alongside Daniel Ramm offering full and partial car makeovers, ideal post winter to free the car of salt and make good those irritating scruffs and scratches alongside the car park dents.

We offer everything from a personal hand-wash through to ‘Car detailing’ – call 01263588160 for a competitive quote.

Exhibition includes a unique collection of reclaimed oak items by Ian Clifft

Rosalie Osborne Gibb will be exhibiting a diverse range of subjects, depicting her love of the coast and countryside, from exquisitely detailed watercolours to bold and colourful acrylics and soft pastels. Signed Limited Edition prints, plus gifts and a wide range of greetings cards featuring Rosalie’s artwork will also be available. Rosalie’s art has sold worldwide, as well as throughout the UK, through local galleries and exhibitions and to several private collectors.

The exhibition will also feature a unique range of handmade kiln-fired glass items by Terrie, ranging from beautiful Murano glass pendants to seaside sun catchers, gifts and decorative items, and a unique collection of reclaimed oak items, including clocks and lamp bases, made by Ian Clifft. As usual, there will be a good selection of used books, teas, coffees and delicious homemade cakes plus the beautiful wildflower conservation churchyard to stroll around. Entry is free, with disabled access and free parking opposite the church. Come along and meet the artists, who will be in attendance throughout the exhibition.

Family Law Update

from Clapham & Collinge Family Law Solicitor Neale Grearson

The rumours have started that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are having a Pre-Nuptial Agreement drawn up. No idea what may be in it and Clapham & Collinge have not yet been instructed! This news has been met with a lot of interest and a realism about the need for such a document.

Apparently Prince Harry is worth about £30 million and Meghan about £4 million. Not entirely therefore a financial "level playing field" and exactly the type of relationship that cries out for a Pre-Nuptial Agreement. Of course everyone hopes that their marriage will last forever but all marriages (including royal ones) are not guaranteed to do so. A report in the Daily Telegraph from December 2017 suggested that enquiries about Pre-Nuptial Agreements in this country had risen by about 70% in the last decade. Perhaps more staggeringly the same survey revealed that apparently about 21% of engaged couples who enquired about a PreNuptial Agreement called off their wedding after speaking to their lawyers!

to have a traditional marriage have argued that there is now inequality in the law as they do not have the choice to become Civil Partners. The plans are to publish a consultation on this to determine the effect of changes on other areas of legislation such as divorce law. Within this other changes are being considered such as the marriage "register" itself being replaced by a new single page "marriage schedule". Couples might no longer be given a "marriage certificate" on the day of the wedding and a single electronic register will replace the current system of registers being held in churches. The proposed reforms are within a back bench private members' bill in the House of Commons that the Government unexpectedly announced it was going to support. Tim Loughton who

introduced the reforms said "we need to recognise that our society is changing and we need to adapt in order to promote family stability – in whatever form – to provide a continuum that gives children the best and most stable start in life." Colin Hart the Chairman of the Coalition for Marriage Campaign Group said extending Civil Partnerships to opposite sex couples will "profoundly undermine marriage. It will be seen as a low commitment form of the institution – a sort of marriage lite."

To find out more or discuss your individual requirements in further detail, our specialist Family Law Solicitors can help. Contact us today on 01692 660230 for our North Walsham office or 01263 823398 for our Sheringham office.

Pre-Nuptial Agreements remain not guaranteed to be legally enforceable but increasingly are being taken into account. Whether you are talking about combined assets of £34 million or more modest figures does it not make sense to try to safeguard and ring fence assets that have been built up before a marriage? Increasingly relationships and marriages are not as straightforward as they were in the past. For example second or third marriages are now more common than they were a generation ago. Inherited wealth and money provided by parents can mean that when a couple get married their financial position is unequal. Should they not have the ability (and business acumen) to consider the eventualities and agree what would happen if they do divorce given that now nearly one in two marriages end in divorce? Aldborough School says Hip Hip Hare-ratio!

Village’s GoGoHare is a colourful critter with ‘tails’ to tell, out to raise funds for charity. Hare-atio is a GoGoHare with tales (tails?) to tell. The school and community of Aldborough in North Norfolk combined to create a colourful critter that’s based on the schoolchildren’s favourite books.

She adds, “We wanted a GoGo Hare who shared our passion for reading and our love of Norfolk – his name is a reference to our country’s famous hero, Horatio Nelson, of course. Plus we wanted him to have real character – and Hare-atio certainly has that.”

Thomas, aged nine, says “I think Hare-atio is fantastic. I like the Shakespeare buttons, and the books on his hat, which shows how much we like reading. I voted for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows because I love the Harry Potter series, I shared the book with my mum, it is the most exciting book I’ve ever read.”

The children voted for their favourite books to be part of Hare-atio’s outfit. “We wrote the Hare-atio with some of the children who helped paint book titles for the jacket in gold, silver and him. Submarines. The word conjures up an image of Captain Nemo in Jules Verne’s fictional submarine ‘Nautilus’ but when Verne ‘invented’ the Nautilus in about 1870, real submarines had existed - mostly on a rather unsuccessful experimental basis - for some years.

But on 5 April, after an excellent lunch of cottage pie, member David Griffiths spoke to members of Holt and District Probus Club about the submarines of the Royal Navy in which he served.

David related the development of the speaker David Griffiths submarine as a fighting machine and gave details of their inherent dangers and of the devices evolved to help submariners who got into difficulty.

The essence in case of a submarine in difficulties is to get to it quickly, and a number of lives were lost through delay, but although in the case of the loss of the Russian boat ‘Kursk’ there were initial accusations of delay in fact the disaster was a result of a series of underwater explosions from which none of the crew of more than 100 could be saved.

The evolution of the submarine from diesel/electric power through to the latest nuclear powered craft was explained, and David spoke about safety on nuclear submarines, which was something to which his later years in the Service were devoted.

Meetings of Holt and District Probus Club are normally held at lunchtime on the 1st Thursday each month at the Feathers in Holt. Enquiries about membership (or about a trial visit - visitors are most welcome) should be made to Secretary Alan Holmes on 01263 710782.

PET CT SCANNING ARRIVES IN NORTH WALSHAM!

Regular visitors to Toll Barn Vets will have noticed the recent building works and we are delighted to announce the specialist extension has been designed to house our very own on-site CT Scanner!

CT scanners use radiation in the same way as x-rays but allow a complete 3D image of the pet with specialised software then allowing advanced reconstructions including 3D skeletal, blood vessel and soft tissue reconstructions. CT scanners have thousands of applications within veterinary care and are the best (and sometimes only) method of diagnosing and assessing the optimal treatment options for some forms of orthopaedic disorders such as elbow dysplasia, complex fractures, bone tumours and limb growth deformities. CT scanning also provides for improved tumour management as they are much more sensitive than conventional x-ray in the search for tumour spread, assessing the 3D boundaries of the tumour to allow precise surgical removal. CT scanning also provides for better identification of nasal disease including tumour, fungal infection, bacterial infection and foreign bodies; ear disease including middle ear disease; lung disease including infection, tumour, foreign bodies and trauma damage; neurological conditions including imaging of the spine, spinal cord and brain.

From Teacher to Playwright …

Stage Direct are about to showcase a new play by a new playwright to be performed in North Walsham.

The group would like to introduce their man David Starling as a talented writer who will join others from the group in complimenting their zest for home written works. By day, David Starling works with children with autism as a class leader at St Andrew’s School in Aylmerton, near Cromer. Away from the classroom, however, David leads a very different existence. He acts with Stage Direct Theatre Company and with Black Cat Theatre and also writes.

Stage Direct have previously produced some of David’s work in the form of comedy sketches and short plays. This June (29 & 30) at the Atrium in North Walsham, Stage Direct will be producing, for the first time, a full length play written by David.

‘Good Morning, Mr Magpie’ is a Norfolk based play about Norfolk characters exploring the safety of home, the desire to chase dreams and all mixed in with a little bit of superstition and a helping of comedy. David is just one more of the Stage Direct writer’s conveyor belt. Last year saw Stage Direct member Ashley Burgoyne’s comedy, ‘The Village Hall’, getting a great reception from an appreciative Atrium audience and plans are currently underway to air a comic play written by another member, Nigel Manson, in early 2019 in the little theatre. Chairman Derek Bull has written a screenplay and is presently putting the finishing touches to his novel while yet another Stage Direct actor, Melissa Collin, is a published poet.

Our CT scanner is a very specialised machine which is able to image all species of pets from the smallest lizard to the largest dogs. Currently, the nearest alternative CT scanner for pets is over an hour away which means many pets require referral to other practices to allow advanced imaging with CT scanners to assist in diagnosis and treatment.

We are delighted with our recent CT scanner addition and after our intensive specialist training have already been making use of it to help treat pets under our care. As CT scanners are so few and far between the addition of our on-site CT scanner marks a big investment and improvement in the standard of care currently accessible to local pets and owners. To find out more about our CT scanning service please contact the Toll Barn Vets team on 01692 407126.

Sheringham South Growing

Vacancies

As of next May the boundary changes take effect and Sheringham South will include Upper Sheringham so Judy and I will be welcoming a few new people.

As the weather is now improving I would expect to see more planning applications coming through in which case I visit every one with advice which may save time and money. If in doubt please come to a Surgery or call me on 01263 824662 or 07780 820850. This summer Judy and I will be advancing the A148/Holway Road roundabout. Judy is especially putting a huge effort into this with her County Councillor hat on. David Ward, who is a prospective Councillor has put great effort in to raise interest and funds.

I hope that many of you went to the Town Council AGM so you will know what is in the offing for Sheringham as a whole.

I'm fed up with Sheringham North winning all the Sheringham in Bloom prizes! We have some lovely patches with a lot of effort being put in so come on, let's do it! Whilst on the subject, please trim your hedging where pavement is concerned Finally, as a member of the SNAP committee we have been tackling speeding. Holway Road comes to mind. I'm desperately trying to get the speed sign opposite Beech Avenue repaired but I guess with the Butts Lane development now under way, it may for a while become self policing!

At present I am Chairman of NNDC, your representative on the Police Crime Panel, member of Planning and Development, on the Licencing Panel and quite honestly, guardian of all things good for Sheringham!

Have a wonderful summer everyone and don't forget, if you want a chat, have an idea, want an ear to moan in or something to laugh about, give me a call or come to a Surgery

Surgery dates are on Fridays between 12noon and 1pm on 25 May, 15 June, 20 July, 24 August, 21 September and 19 October. Richard Shepherd

CROMER AND SHERINGHAM PROBUS CLUB

On Tuesday 3 April, Cromer and Sheringham Probus Club enjoyed a most informative talk by Chris Boxall, who has been a guide at Houghton Hall for 23 years, on the subject of ‘Houghton Hall and Walpole’.

Chris pointed out that Sir Robert Walpole remains the longest-serving prime minister in British history, and was the first English minister to occupy 10 Downing Street.

Besides recounting the vicissitudes of Walpole’s career, Chris outlined the history of Houghton Hall and how the current Hall, on Walpole’s instructions, is the third to have been built on the site - with new stables and a new village as well! There are three statues, representing justice, oratory and wisdom - all, apparently, things that Walpole associated with himself! In 1976 the Hall was opened to the public for the first time. Currently there are works by Damien Hirst on display - those inside the Hall are temporarily replacing the normal collection of Walpole family portraits. Full details are on the Hall’s website.

Sheringham Christians cycle home from North Wales

A team of cyclists from Lighthouse Community Church in Sheringham has just completed a 256-mile cycle ride from Prestatyn in North Wales raising well over £1000 for a school in Uganda.

The cycle ride was organised by Reed People, a charity based at and supported by the Lighthouse church. They are working with Pastor Stephen Musisi, Director of African Child Development Trust, to improve and develop a primary school in the village of Lumpewe in Uganda.

The cycling team set off from Prestatyn on Thursday 12 April and travelled 75 miles to Cheshire on the first day. The second day took them through the Midlands, leaving a 98-mile marathon to complete on the Saturday. They finished the final few miles on Sunday morning, arriving back at Lighthouse in Sheringham at 10.20am to the rapturous applause of the congregation waiting in the car park.

“We know we have already raised well over £1000” explained event organiser Derek Baldry, “but the total is still growing.” Asked why they embarked on such a marathon, Derek said “Quite simply because God told us to! And it was He who sustained us throughout this trip.”

Ian Mutton, one of the riders, said “Leicester Ring Road in the rush hour is not to be recommended, and the hills around Rutland Before setting off Water were tough going, but God was Photo: Gareth Gabriel working through our weakness, and He got us back to Sheringham. We felt a huge sense of achievement.”

The youngest rider, Matthew Mutton, who completed an extra two miles on the third day in order to achieve 100 miles that day, said “The best bit was the brilliant teamwork – we all worked together as one team.”

Ingrid Fleetcroft added “And the support team were great too – following with the support vehicle and making sure we had everything we needed.”

Since 2013, members of Lighthouse Community Church have been helping and supporting the school and associated church in Lumpewe, building new classrooms, laying floors, installing safe electricity, and providing a water supply, equipment and training. There is much more to do to alleviate overcrowding, and to extend the facilities, with the eventual aim of developing a secondary school with an agricultural training programme.
