Local surfing event raises £425 for RNLI Sheringham Lifeboat
From the earliest days, local man Neil Watson, surf journalist and photographer, was closely involved with the burgeoning surf scene. Neil had been there, and probably written about it in many published articles in the European surf magazines or been on the beach photographing or filming many of his friends and colleagues as they played among fickle nature's rarer moments.

Continued from front cover... He would very often unselfishly choose to record those rarer moments, and only later, would he 'suit-up' and get in the water to have some fun of his own.
Neil very sadly passed away 4 four years ago but the annual 'Neil Watson Memorial Vintage Surfing event' seems a fitting tribute to a much-loved father, grandfather and friend to so many.
We like to keep it as informal and low-key as possible, an opportunity for surfers from the surrounding area of all ages to gather and remember Neil and our other lost souls from the surfing community.
The memorial event is organised by Neil’s son Daniel and close friends Paul and Darren with the help of other willing helpers from the local surfing community. Each year donations are made for charity. This year a cheque for £425 was donated to the Sheringham Lifeboat after they were victims of a break in at the station which suffered considerable damage and collection boxes stolen.
TRUSTEES NEEDED FOR LOCAL CHARITY September 2018
Have you been wondering about volunteering for a good cause, but want to using your particular skills?
Newly retired with some energy and enthusiasm, or in work but wanting to “give something back” to your community?
Age Concern North Norfolk, based in Sheringham, is a small charity that supports the elderly in the wider area (some with early dementia) with a Day Centre Hub, Intergenerational activities and a Drop In Service.
If you have current or past financial, business, HR or administrative expertise, your skills will be particularly valuable, but we welcome expressions of interest from all individuals over 18 years of age who are willing to commit regularly approximately 4 hours a month to volunteering with us as a Trustee. This time includes our monthly trustees meeting and some extra time using your own particular skill set. This might be to help with fund raising or other tasks.
Trustees usually serve initially for a period of 3 years. You will be joining a team of dedicated people who will offer support. We will value your unique skills and innovative ideas. We hold a trustees meeting monthly on a Thursday in Sheringham.
If you are interested, please contact ageconcernmanager@gmail.com or phone 01263 821188
There will be an informal interview process and a chance for you to ask any questions of your own.
We look forward to meeting you. Jennie Cummings-Knight, Chair Age Concern North Norfolk

North Norfolk Photographic Society
Malcolm Sales gave a very interesting and inspiring talk to North Norfolk Photographic Society on Smart Phone Photography. Malcolm is an ex-professional Speaker Malcolm Sales wedding photographer, who now shoots houses for estate agents.
The first half of the evening was taken up by displaying a number of prints. Whilst he wouldn’t have ever considered using the smart phone for a wedding shoot, the advantage that it has is the immediacy – catching the moment, catching the light.
Malcolm stressed that if you use it as a toy, you
can expect poor images. Treat it as a serious camera and obey the same rules regarding vision, composition, exposure, focus etc., and you should be very pleased with the images that you can achieve.
Malcolm shoots on the phone and edits on the phone. In .jpeg format, using Snapseed application (a free app), and then immediately uploads to a variety of destinations (postcards using Touchnote, photo books, sending to someone else via airdrop, social media etc.). He utilises the headphones call button as a cable release, and also uses a mini gorilla tripod.
The images he shared included black and white, panorama, street photography, landscape, and abstract.
The second half of the talk was taken up with a practical demonstration of the Snapseed application. Malcolm took us through his Snapseed workflow: amend perspective to
SINGING FOR HEALTH
This exciting new singing group is starting in North Norfolk and will be led by the well known local conductor Angela Dugdale.
It is designed to be a group not only for your well-being and health, but especially for pleasure. We hope to sing to and with patients in Caring Communities.
All practices will be held in Beck House Barn which was set up by the
straighten any sloping horizontals or vertical (which should be minimal), then cropping, and only then tuning the levels in the image. He cautioned over saturating images – the smart phone screen is unlikely to be properly colour calibrated. He demonstrated the various effects possible through the Vintage, Grunge, Double exposure and Frame effects. It is possible to save the image with all the adjustments kept as layers, to enable undoing at a later date, but Malcolm tends to compress the image and upload it straightaway. This he demonstrated by using Air Drop to send straight to the nearby phone of one of our members.
Meetings of the North Norfolk Photographic Society are normally held on the first and third Wednesday of each month at Holt Community Centre. For further details please contact the club Secretary, Judith Wells at secretary.nnps@gmail.com or see the club website at http://www.nnphotosoc.org/

We will meet on Friday afternoons, starting on Friday 2 November from 2pm - 3.30pm at Beck House Barn, The Street, Kelling NR25 7EL. For further details please ring 01263 588389.
WHY CHOOSE SILVER SIL VER & W WARD ARD SOLICIT ORS in 201 ? 201 ? SOLICITORS
“It’s a recurrent misconception that a larger firm is better.
I am Clare Mayell and I own Silver and Ward Solicitors in Sheringham. I am an extremely competent and experienced solicitor. I appreciate that any time of the year can be a difficult difficult time for many people to resolve legal issues of worry and concern, for example, making a will or Lasting Power of Attorney. As I have worked for 2 larger local firms I know what clients want and expect. My charges are significantly less than other solicitors in North Norfolk or Norwich and I provide 22 years of expertise and exceptional service. I pride myself in being one of the only solicitors who offers offers a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT APPOINTMENT,, so clients can come in and obtain some initial advice and discuss costs and then make an informed decision. At a larger firm you just pay more. When a client rings or walks through the door they invariably get to speak to me as this personal and direct approach is important to my clients and I. I ensure complete confidentiality is an absolute priority. I advise new clients to “shop around as I know that my charges are significantly less than other solicitors but I can offer offer the same expertise, if not better. I have and can act for clients across Norfolk and the Country as we now have the use of Skype, emails etc. so it enables me to act for clients further afield. The reason that clients, near and far, instruct Silver and Ward is because of my expertise, exceptional service and competitive costs.
“I would say to any potential client with a legal issue or worry in 201 to come and meet me face to face for a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, as you have nothing to lose but all to gain.
Home visits can be arranged or appointments outside of office hours including Saturdays. 01263 823465 or email clare@silverandward.co.uk

Volunteers Needed! Time to Spare? North Norfolk Community Transport is currently looking for people with a few hours to spare who can offer their services as volunteer drivers.
Weather
We are a local charitable organisation that provides a door to door service to hundreds of North Norfolk residents who do not have easy access to other forms of transport.
by Ned Nimbus
The past three months came out as predicted although put under some pressure from an invigorated Atlantic in September as the tropics produced a few storms, some of which tracked past our western shores.
Up until then the hurricane season, as last year, was benign and way below predictions. Still a few weeks left however it does look as if there will be a good deal of fine weather up until mid-October, but with a variation in temperature as high pressure introduces winds coming in from the north now and again.
Thereafter we start to get an increase in unsettled conditions continuing into November when wet conditions will dominate.
December is likely to be a mixed month but throughout October to December no sustained cold weather is envisaged as low and high pressure systems will cross the country.
There just might be some cold lining up for after Christmas.

Typically our members will use the service to travel from the outlying villages into such destinations as North Walsham, Cromer, Sheringham, Holt, Wroxham and Stalham to shop and run errands. Many of our passengers also enjoy the social aspect of the journey as they can catch up with neighbours and also meet new people. We are particularly proud of our drivers who are friendly reliable and always happy to ‘go the extra mile’ and help with the shopping bags.
In addition to our regular Dial a Ride trips we also run excursions to local places of interest such as garden centres, Wroxham Barns, Norwich and Great Yarmouth.
Most of our drivers are volunteers. They are from of variety of backgrounds with differing past experience. The thing that they do have in common is that all find the role rewarding and enjoyable at the same time.
If you have category D1 on your licence, enjoy driving, have a few hours to spare each week and would like to join us in providing this vital service then please call Carl or Steven on 01692 500840 or alternatively e-mail carl@nnct.org.uk

Blakeney Rowing Club makes a Splash It has been a hectic and enjoyable few weeks for your local rowing club.
LARGE RANGE OF CAR PARTS & ACCESSORIES
Apart from the usual outings involving experienced and newer rowers, there have been some major events. The first of these took place on the morning of 1 September and it was the second Wells to Blakeney row. Our two skiffs – Hoi Larntan and Bluejacket – were ably crewed along the channel from Wells, into the open water around the Point, accompanied by a flotilla of kayaks and canoes. It was a great morning on the water. Many thanks to all who took part including, of course, those who undertook the responsibility of towing the skiffs to the starting point.

HEADS AHEAD
The two skiffs barely had time to get dry before they were wheeled out for the Blakeney Regatta race the following day. This eagerly anticipated event was a real battle on the water as two well matched crews strove hard to gain advantage. It was the closest and most exciting race seen for many years. Hoi Larntan made it first over the line with every member of the crew pulling hard. Well done to all concerned!

Once again, on 8 September, the Crabbers were well represented at The Great River Race on the Thames; both skiffs were involved. This is an international event and, this year, 320 crews were taking part in a race which is always full of colour and

excitement. The competition over the occasionally turbulent waters was hard and keen. However, the crew of Hoi Larntan completed the twenty-two miles in a very creditable time of just over three hours with the Bluejacket rowers coming in twenty minutes later. It was an exhausting but thoroughly enjoyable day. Many thanks must go to organisers and boat transporters who contributed so much time and effort. See some great action pictures on crablakeney.wordpress.com.
Why not come along and try skiff rowing? Socialise on the water or compete. The choice is entirely yours. You may sample three rows before deciding whether to join and no previous experience is necessary. Coaching is always on offer. If you are interested in the fun of rowing, contact Tom on 01263 761570. You can also follow club activities on Facebook. See you on the water soon, Barry Howes

Smart new cups help the environment – and can save money too.

As well as helping the environment, using one of these cups can quickly pay for itself. Many coffee outlets, for example, give a discount to customers who provide their own reusable cups. Reducing SUP use is particularly important in North Norfolk. No district in England has more Blue Flag beaches, and helping to reduce the amount of SUP can only help the district’s beaches and the marine life in the sea.
The cups are available for £5 from the North Norfolk Information Centre in Cromer.

Wills, Gifts, and Legal Jargon Fiona Hewitt, Director, Hayes + Storr
The main (although not sole) purpose of a will is usually to decide who will receive what belongs to you when you are gone. In other words, it is a gift of your ‘estate’ (everything you own), to take effect on your death. There may simply be one straightforward gift of everything to a relative, friend or charity, or you may wish to make a number of gifts to different individuals or organisations.
As lawyers, we tend to distinguish between different types of gift. The legal vocabulary used can seem over-complicated to clients, but the distinctions can be important in the administration of an estate.
It might be helpful to explain some of the most common words used in the contexts of gifts in Wills:
The word ‘legacy’ is often used in place of ‘gift’ in a legal context, because it relates particularly to a gift (of any sort) in a Will, as opposed to a lifetime gift, for example.
or it could be a gift of some shares in a company or even the contents of a particular bank account.
A ‘pecuniary legacy’ is a gift of an amount of money, such as ‘I give the sum of One Hundred Pounds to my friend Fred’.
‘Chattels’ refers to personal possessions. The reason we tend to use the rather archaic term ‘chattels’ is because it has been defined quite precisely in legislation, which can help to avoid confusion and conflict. A definition of chattels appears in the Administration of Estates Act 1925, and this is the list with which most solicitors are familiar. However, it is rather outdated, with its reference to ‘carriages’ and ‘stable furniture’, and it was amended in the Inheritance and Trustees Powers Act 2014 to mean, for legal purposes, ‘tangible movable property, other than such property which: • consists of money or securities for money • or was used […] solely or mainly for business purposes • or was held […] solely as an investment.’
Historians and farmers may be interested to note the strong connection in the past between wealth and agricultural assets. The word ‘pecuniary’ came originally from Holt Country Park photography competition ‘pecus’, the Latin Chance for your pictures to feature in calendar word for cattle, and, If you are a keen photographer and love shooting in North Norfolk, Holt is the place for you.
A ‘specific gift’ is a gift of a particular, and separately defined, item or asset. This could be a gold watch or piece of furniture, for instance,
by derivation, for wealth or money. ‘Chattel’ has the same Latin (and Anglo-Norman French) roots as our word ‘cattle’ itself.
On a related matter, clients often comment on the lack of punctuation in Wills. It is usual to be extremely sparing, especially with commas and full stops. It may be an old fashioned approach, which isn’t followed by all, but it still has merit. Although a lack of punctuation makes the Will a more difficult document to read, it avoids any possibility of misunderstanding – the ‘Eats Shoots and Leaves’ issue*. So if you find your draft Will or the letter accompanying it contains some unusual language or punctuation, please bear with us, but do make sure you know what it all means. If you are in any doubt, ask us for an explanation.
*’Eats shoots and leaves’ – a panda *‘Eats, shoots and leaves’ – a hungry assassin

Trio Sing for EAAA
This Norfolk based trio of singers is performing to raise money for the East Anglian Air Ambulance, and also for Sheringham Little Theatre, which is hosting a wonderful musical evening on Saturday 3 November.
Twins Robert and Andy Walker, known as The Walker Brothers of Norfolk, and singer Madeline Hudson, will be singing popular songs from the 60s, 70s and 80s that you are bound to find yourself singing along with! Rob, Andy and Madeline perform a wide range of musical genres, but for this show they will focus on well-loved pop classics. Andy, who lives in Overstrand and has his own plumbing company, has a great deal of singing experience, ranging from fronting rock bands to musical theatre, to opera, once playing the male lead in Carmen!
Madeline, a French teacher who also lives in Overstrand, has sung in musicals, shows and concerts for many years and joined the Walker brothers a few years ago when they discovered a mutual love of singing great songs.
Rob, a charity fund raiser, lives with his partner just south of Norwich, but comes to Overstrand to rehearse with Andy and Madeline every week. His wide musical experience includes performing with bands and running a choir. Together the trio have raised money for many local, national and international charities.
With voices blended in harmony as well as solo spots, this evening will be a fantastic celebration of the best songs from the recent past and will leave you with a smile on your face, a spring in your step, and the knowledge that you have helped raise funds for two great charities. Now that’s what you call a good evening! Saturday 3 November 7.30pm. Tickets £12.50. Sheringham Little Theatre Box office: 01263 822347

May I take the opportunity through your paper here to thank those who played any part in putting together the head stone and ceremony for those civilians who died in the air raids in Sheringham all those years ago. Unfortunately I was not able to be there at the ceremony on Saturday 22 September but was there in spirit. It is a fitting reminder, particularly for family and of course us all, not to forget what suffering war and conflict brings - no winners but many casualties who pay the price. In particular one of these raids left an awfully gruesome detail which was talked about for many years after. Because we live in such a lovely peaceful part of the world we need reminding, especially as this world seems to be becoming a much more volatile place. Thanks again, keep on remembering. Brian Hannah
Dear Margaret,
I would like to say a big thank you to Mr Brian Farrow and Sheringham Town Council for achieving the placement of the Civilian War Memorial at Sheringham cemetery. The service by Rev Christian Heycocks and others was very appropriate so well done and thank you. It is nice to know that the families now have a memorial to visit and reminisce. Although not related to any of those families, my late mother Mrs Eleanor England nee Grice often spoke of the tragic loss of her friend Peggy nee Farrow along with her baby and mother. Thank you. A caring community organisation has given £500 to a north Norfolk lifeboat it has supported for more than half a century.
The money was given to the Sheringham RNLI lifeboat by the Oddfellows, through their North Walsham-based Trafalgar Lodge.
Angela Batson went to the station to hand over the latest £500 to operations manager Brian Farrow and Senior Helmsman Dave Hagan – and also saw the Oddfellows support in action during a practice launch.
The two historic groups have a link going back to 1961 when the Oddfellows bought the station its Oakley class lifeboat. They have bought two more since in gifts costing around £600,000 and which have saved more than The Oddfellows lifeboat, and fundraising, 150 lives in 300-plus in action during a practice launch. launches.
The Oddfellows are currently campaigning to raise a further £214,000 for the next Sheringham boat, but also continue to support the station with smaller gifts to help towards everyday running costs.

The RNLI dates back to 1824 and the Oddfellows to 1810, when it was formed as a “friendly society” providing members with social, care and financial benefits as well as supporting organisations that help others such as the RNLI and medical research.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
Several more cats and kittens have left for new homes recently, including Sandie, one of our older cats who had been returned to our care when her owner was no longer able to look after her and Bobo a nice young cat who came in with several kittens because her owner had too many cats. We also said goodbye to Mittens who had already had three homes before joining us. When she arrived, she was very vocal, but, with lots of fuss from her carers, we began to see what a lovely friendly cat she was and knew that she just needed a home where she would get lots of attention. Her new owner fell in love with her immediately and has since let us know that it feels as though she has always been a member of her household.
Cats and kittens do react in different way when they arrive in their new home. Mittens, for instance, was happy to explore everywhere, whereas Bobo, took to hiding under the furniture and initially only came out to eat and use her litter tray. As most will have spent some time in one of our cat pens, to suddenly be offered the freedom to roam in a house, can be quite intimidating to begin with so we do suggest that the cat’s territory is limited to one room to begin with and to gradually allow them access to the rest of the house. Not all cats will be like Mittens, confident enough to explore straight away.
Although some of the kittens in care will have been living in a home and used to all the noises associated with a busy household, others will have been in care in one of our pens. They will be used to the sound of a vacuum cleaner in action, but not noises associated with televisions, washing machines, etc. Again, introduce them to these strange sounds gradually as most will need time to adjust (some cats continue to make a hasty exit when they hear a vacuum cleaner at work). Even when giving a home to two kittens you will often find they react differently to these new noises. It can be a frightening world for them in their new home and letting them settle at their own pace will help them to settle quickly.

When cats and kittens are re-homed we also always emphasise to their new family the importance of keeping all windows shut (even in very warm weather), making sure cat flaps are locked and checking before opening doors to the outside world. When you do finally let them out it is also a good idea to do this just before a meal is due!
If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 it (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). Hedgehog Haven
At the time of writing (end of September) in the last week I have taken in four underweight hogs Freda, Nutmeg, Cimmamon and Mustard.
Although from different locations, they all weigh between 230 and 260 grams. As by mid November at the latest, they would need to weigh the recommended minimum weight of 650 grams to survive hibernation, it is looking likely that they will be spending the winter here. Please keep a look out for these small ones, who will be desperately seeking lots of food to gain weight.
I will be at North Walsham Garden Centre on Saturday 13 October between 10am and 3pm with leaflets, advice and hopefully a resident hedgehog. Come along and say hello.

NORTH NORFOLK HOPS
At one of their monthly meetings back in 2016 the Sheringham Horticultural Society had a talk from David Holliday of the Norfolk Brewhouse. David mentioned that he had an ambition to produce a truly local beer which used Maris Otter, the famous barley grown in Norfolk, but he could not find a supply of locally grown hops.
As keen horticulturists a group of the Society’s members took up his challenge and identified part of an allotment on the Society’s site in Beeston Regis that was suitable for growing hops.
Meanwhile David, at the brewery, consulted his hop merchant about the varieties of hops that would grow best in Beeston Regis taking into account the local soil conditions and the coastal climate. It was agreed that the traditional British varieties of Golding,
Fuggles, Challenger and Cascade were the most likely to succeed and thirty plants were bought and planted with the necessary posts and wires to support the bines.
Moving forward to September 2018, the first crop has been picked. Two bins of hops were rushed to the Norfolk Brewhouse in Hindringham and brewing started the same day. A green hop beer is being produced and we are all looking forward to our first taste of Beeston Regis beer. David, from the brewery, says ‘how delighted we are to be involved in such a community spirited project.
When I first mentioned to the Society that it
would be nice to have some hops grown locally, little did I realise that it would come to reality in the way that it has. The harvest will just get bigger and bigger.
The pubs have also got behind the project and I look forward to raising a glass of a true taste of North Norfolk with the team who grew the hops’.
Arrangements have been made to taste the first glasses of our local beer and I will report back. Bob Wilkinson
National Trust Newest Acquisition - John Idiens Wood
The newest acquisition of the National Trust is an area of mixed woodland, above Town Hill in West Runton which has been has been designated ‘John Idiens Wood’ in memory of John, who died in 2016.
In early September 2018, former and present volunteers, family, friends and National Trust staff gathered in the wood to drink a toast to the memory of John.
New signage has been installed and the woodland can be accessed on foot from Sandy Lane, opposite the entrance to Renwick Park.
New Life Flooring
The acquisition of this piece woodland was made possible by a generous donation from an old school friend of John’s.
John volunteered for the National Trust in Norfolk for over 30 years. He was volunteer manager for the National Trust for the West Runton and Beeston Regis Heath property for nearly 20 years, leading teams of volunteers in the restoration and management of heathland and woodland at West Runton and Beeston Regis. In 2010 he was awarded an MBE for his work.

Firm offers Tees and cake to raise money for cancer charities
Hayes & Storr Solicitors have been busy over recent weeks raising as much cash as possible for various cancer charities through a series of events including a golf day in Cromer, a coastal hike from Wells to Hunstanton and a coffee morning in Holt. It all started with a Cancer Research UK ‘Race for Life’ hike where a team of female staff, known internally as the ‘Hayes Angels’ walked 22 miles from Hunstanton to Wells and raised over £500 for Cancer Research UK.
Hayes Angels
Last month the firm’s 6th Annual Golf Day, at Royal Cromer, was the ideal event to raise £450 for Macmillan Cancer Support, supplying a wide variety of homemade cakes to 54 players from local businesses, as they each arrived hungry at the ‘Half Way House’ on the course.
Then a Macmillan coffee morning at the Hayes + Storr Holt office raised £400 from the homebaking efforts of staff.

MacMillan in Sheringham
The Macmillan Coffee Morning and Brave the Shave at the North Norfolk Railway on 28th September were both a great success. The Coffee Morning raised £851, and Brave the Shave £1733, with donations still coming in! Thanks are due to all the Railway for all their encouragement and support, the many helpers and generous donators, Scissorhands for the shaving, Leigh Caudwell for photography and Holt Minor Miniature Railway for giving their days takings towards ‘Brave the Shave’. Who could have imagined that so many people would raise so much money to see two old heads shaved?!
The proceeds have been paid in via the local Macmillan group, meaning that the funds will be ‘ring-fenced’ for projects in North Norfolk.
Addendum
Further to our story on the 1940s Weekend in the last issue (Sheringham Independent 29 September) we would like to add that Lindy Hop Dance & Swing classes are held at Sheringham Community Centre on alternate Wednesdays from 8.30pm until 10pm. For details Tel 01263 822150.
Laser hair removal just got better!
Try the latest, fastest, painless and most effective hair removal laser at the Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic. With up to 30% off this autumn there is no reason not to!
According to the latest research in hair removal, women shave 11,540 times in their lifetime and men spend 3000 hours on their shaving routine. It is no surprise then that a large number of people are turning to a long lasting solution for unwanted hair.
At the Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic, Dr Sanjay Gheyi MBBS MS FRCS FPCert BCAAM treats patients not only from Norfolk, but also surrounding counties and abroad. True to his philosophy of offering best treatments and technologies he has invested in the best technology for laser hair removal.
We see patients in all age groups, both sexes and gender reassignment cases. We all realise the physical impact of unwanted hair, but when we dig a bit deeper it is quite heart wrenching to hear some stories. Often there is lack of awareness of laser hair removal and how effective it is.
Coltishall Clinic now has not one, but five different lasers for hair removal. One laser cannot work best for everyone. Hence we have decided to have a range of lasers to provide best results to our patients and clients. Says clinic manager Trish.
How do we choose your laser? - We consider your skin type, hair type and body area to treat and then decide which machine will work best for you. You do need to have a proper consultation for laser hair removal. We also see people who can have medical reasons for hair growth and further testing or issues may need to be considered.
What about the pain and speed! It is not painful; sensation is just like snap from a rubber band. A cool gel is used with IPL and cool spray with our laser, which is incredibly fast and allows us to treat a full back or lower or upper legs in less than 40 minutes. It is very safe and offers unmatched results. You can watch a video of this laser on our website.

KELLING PROBUS CLUB
Kelling Probus Club held its September lunch meeting at The Dales Hotel.
After the usual tasty lunch for 20 members & guests, Chairman Mike Clayton welcomed our speaker Nigel Digby who spoke on transport in Norfolk. Mike explained that not only was our speaker an artist, but also an author and guitar teacher.
Nigel told us he had always had an interest in railways and his favourite companies were MGNR and GE who operated throughout Norfolk up to the late 30s.
We were told that in 1862 the local railways all operated around the hub of Norwich and there was little in the way of direct services between say Kings Lynn and Great Yarmouth without going in to Norwich. This presented problems both for passengers and freight and involved having to marshall freight several times in a journey so the rival companies cooperated to provide more direct links.
Nigel then moved on to the livery and paintwork of the local trains and told us how every three years rolling stock was called in to Melton Constable to be overhauled and repainted. He told us that the preparation of the paint was a skilled job as it was all made on the spot from oil paint paste, linseed oil and turpentine. He went on to detail the skill of the painters and how they applied often eight or nine coats to produce a superior finish. He stated that all carriages were made of either mahogany or teak, and were all retreated at the paint works.
The final part of the talk covered his illustrations used in his books and articles and showed us what a meticulous artist he was.
Dave Vickery thanked Nigel for his talk and the meeting closed at 3pm. If you would like to get more details of our friendly Probus Club call John Whittington on 01263 820333.
