Latched On Breastfeeding Support Group is moving to Sheringham! The local and popular breastfeeding support group ‘Latched On’ has moved to the Sheringham Lighthouse from Saturday 9 February!

‘Latched On’ is a well-established breastfeeding support group and clinic that has previously been held in Holt. In 2017 three local mums identified the lack of services for breastfeeding families in North Norfolk and lead by filling the gap themselves with ‘Latched On’.

NNDC raises over ÂŁ3,600 for local charities

Dress Down days prove to be a hit with staff Over the course of 2018, staff working at North Norfolk District Council have raised over ÂŁ3,600 for local charities. NNDC have held Dress Down days, where employees have been encouraged to make donations to a number of good causes in return for wearing their casual clothes to work.

On the days the staff have taken part in fundraising for their chosen charities, additional money has been raised through raffles and bake sales.

The charities were nominated by members of staff or elected members, and those that have benefitted in 2018 were Little Angels Playgroup in Fakenham, Nelson’s Journey, Multiple Sclerosis Society, Team Rubicon – Disaster Recovery, Open Youth Trust, the Scouts, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Migraine Trust, Parkinson’s UK, Children in Need, East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices, Break, The Purfleet Trust and Christmas Jumper Day for Save the Children.

NNDC has been running these successful Dress Down days for several years and will continue to do so in 2019.

SOS for the Big C

On Saturday 25 January a charity event took place at the Masonic Centre in Sheringham. About 90 people were entertained by local progressive group Red Oktober, after which was provided a wholesome supper of soup, chilli and lasagne prepared by local Chef of renown, the produce for which was provided, either FOC or subsidised by several local outlets, including Hastings, Kingfisher Provisions, M & D Butchers and Tescos.

After the meal, Red Oktober’s entertainment continued with a mixture of good music and dubious humour, mostly directed at a certain member of the audience, who shall remain nameless (is that what you wanted me to say Eddie?).

Thanks must also go to the Masonic Centre for the hire of the Hall, Jeremy Stubbs for transporting the stage and all of the several helpers on the night, both with regard to serving the food and also clearing away at the end of the evening.

After taking all expenses into account the money raised was ÂŁ829. This money will go to provide equipment for the new Medical and Cancer Unit at Cromer Hospital, the information for which you can find at www.nnuh.nhs.uk/our-services/our-hospitals/cromer-expansion-plans/

This is the most worthy of causes and a much needed facility here in North Norfolk and, if nothing else, will save a great deal of time and effort with regard to travelling to the N&N.

WHY CHOOSE WHY CHOOSE SILVER & WARD WARD SILVER SOLICITORS in in 2019? 20 19 ? SOLICITORS

“It’s a recurrent misconception that a larger firm is better.”

I am Clare Mayell and I own Silver and Ward Solicitors in Sheringham. I am an extremely competent and experienced solicitor. I appreciate that any time of the year can be a difficult time for many people to resolve legal issues of worry and concern, for example, making a will or Lasting Power of Attorney. As I have worked for 2 larger local firms I know what clients want and expect. My charges are significantly less than other solicitors in North Norfolk or Norwich and I provide 22 years of expertise and exceptional service. I pride myself in being one of the only solicitors who offffers a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, so clients can come in and obtain some initial advice and discuss costs and then make an informed decision. At a larger firm you just pay more. When a client rings or walks through the door they invariably get to speak to me as this personal and direct approach is important to my clients and I. I ensure complete confidentiality is an absolute priority. I advise new clients to “shop around” as I know that my charges are significantly less than other solicitors but I can offer the same expertise, if not better. I have and can act for clients across Norrffolk and the Country as we now have the use of Skype, emails etc. so it enables me to act for clients further afield. The reason that clients, near and far, instruct Silver and Ward is because of my expertise, exceptional service and competitive costs.

“I would say to any potential client with a legal issue or worry in 2019 to come and meet me face to face for a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, as you have nothing to lose but all to gain.

Home visits can be arranged or appointments outside of office hours including Saturdays. 0 1263 8 23465 or email clare@silverandward.co.uk 01263 823465

Trustees needed for local charity

Have you been wondering about volunteering for a good cause, but want to use your particular skills?

Still working or newly retired with some energy and enthusiasm, but wanting to “give something back” to your community?

Age Concern North Norfolk, based in Sheringham, is a small charity that supports the elderly in the wider area (some with early dementia) with a Day Centre Hub, Intergenerational activities and a Drop in Service. If you join us you will have the chance to make a real difference to the lives of older people in our community.

If you have current or past financial, business, HR or administrative expertise, your skills will be particularly valuable, but we welcome expressions of interest from all individuals over 18 years of age who are willing to commit regularly approximately 4 hours a month to volunteering with us as a Trustee. This time includes our monthly trustees meeting (currently the third Thursday in the month) and some extra time using your own particular skill set. This might be to help with fund raising or other tasks.

Trustees usually serve initially for a period of 3 years.

You will be joining a small team of dedicated people who will offer any support that may be needed. We will value your unique skills and innovative ideas. If you are interested, please contact ageconcernmanager@gmail.com or phone 01263 821188.

There will be an informal interview process and a chance for you to ask any questions of your own, as well as find out what being a trustee is all about.

We look forward very much to meeting you.

Treat your skin this winter

Cost effective, skin rejuvenation treatments special packages are available

You are still active and you feel great. But, the effects of time, sun, wind and toxins in our air have taken their toll on the appearance of your skin. It’s not as smooth as it was when you were younger. Now there are effective procedures available to reverse these changes. We have created special cost effective packages to look after your skin during the winter months. 1] Polish and Brighten. This is a fantastic treatment to polish and brighten the skin. This includes diamond microdermabrasion to exfoliate the skin. Not only this exfoliates and polishes your skin, it also stimulates collagen synthesis in the deeper layers to improve the overall skin quality. Microdermabrasion is then followed by LED treatment with a red light to further improve and brighten your skin to give it a nice glow.

2] Tone and Tighten. This includes treatment with our gentle lasers to give a nice even tone to your skin. Although you will notice results after one session, for best results we suggest a course of these and packages are available. Of course any of these treatments can be combined with our excellent range of skin products and other state-of-the-art treatments to look after your skin year around.

Cromer Carnival set to celebrate 50th year – what are your memories?

a committee member, an organiser of an event, a volunteer or display act at a previous carnival? Why does Cromer carnival hold a special memory for you? Tony Shipp, Chairman of the Carnival, who will this year celebrate his 35th year at the helm, said “As part of our celebrations marking the 50th Anniversary of the C.V.E.O. we are planning to put together a booklet of photographs, memories, highlights and the history of Cromer Carnival.

“I am sure many of you, who have been involved at some time over the past 50 years, have photographs and memories that could be part of that publication.

Cromer Carnival 1980 – Children’s fancy dress on the promenade

As one of the biggest carnivals in the country, organisers would like to hear from you about your memories of this iconic event.

It would be great if you could search these out or write them down and email them to us so we can hear what Cromer Carnival has meant to you. Please take time to search through your photographs and write down your memories and highlights - they could be more recently, or 50 years ago. It need be only a sentence or two. Let’s see if we can make it a publication that you have contributed to and all supporters of Cromer Carnival will want to own. We will also be putting all the memories and photos submitted onto a new website which we hope will grow throughout the year.” To submit your memories by email email cromercarnival50@gmail.com. Alternatively you can call Tony Shipp on 01263 512591. There will also be a drop-in morning for people to bring in memories and photos to share with the carnival. This will take place at Merchants Place, Cromer on Saturday 16th February from 10am to 2pm. All photos and memories brought in on the day will be copied so they can be used in the booklet or on the website.

Over the past 50 years the carnival has been entertaining thousands of visitors and locals alike with a year-round programme of events, centring around Carnival Week in August. Across the decades the events of carnival week have constantly changed but the spirit of the carnival has remained the same – one of fun, family and celebration.

Now, organisers are planning to put together a booklet and website to look back on the past 50 years of Cromer Voluntary Entertainments Organisation (CVEO) – the organisation behind Cromer Carnival.

They would like you to share your memories, photos and highlights of the carnival with them.

Many of the Carnival favourites return this year with the Bonny Baby Competition, Knobbly Knees Contest, Glamorous Grandmother Competition, Decorated Beach Hut Competition, Waiter and Watresses Race and the fabulous Family Fun Day. There will also be a number of special events throughout the year to celebrate the 50th year and the committee will be bringing back events which were popular in the past. The Carnival will host a Midsummer Charity Ball in aid of EACH, on Saturday 22 June at Northrepps Cottage. Tickets are on sale at £45 per person and can be obtained from, the Gift Shop on the corner of Garden Street and Church Street, Cromer or via Diane Burdett on 01263 511981. At RDA, our horses and ponies provide therapy, achievement and enjoyment to people with disabilities all over the UK. Our network of 500 volunteer groups organise activities such as riding, carriage driving, vaulting and show jumping to over 25,000 people each year. Now riders in the North Norfolk area will have the opportunity to choose between two newly created groups.

Norfolk Coast RDA is based at North Norfolk Riding Centre, Walsingham and Worstead and District RDA rides at Squirrelwood Equestrian Centre, Hall Farm, Worstead.

Peter Tobitt, Norfolk County Chairman for RDA commented “It is so exciting to see the expansion of riding opportunities in this geographical area. The two new Groups are run by trustee boards and volunteers with a wealth of experience who are looking to expand the possibilities for their riders. I am confident that each Group

Anglia Mowers, Sheringham, continue to sponsor About with Friends Gardening Service

About with Friends Gardening Service has again benefitted from a donation of gardening equipment from Anglia Mowers, Sheringham.

A Hondy Izy mower was presented to members and staff from the charity by Justin of Anglia Mowers. The new machine will be invaluable once the spring weather arrives and the calls start coming in from our local customers to cut their freshly growing lawns.

About with Friends Gardening Service staff and volunteers support members to carry out weeding, planting, mowing, pruning, hedge cutting and many other gardening tasks. The team also looks after our allotment in East Runton where we grow fruit and vegetables for our catering service and café.

Chief Executive Officer Helen Dalton-Hare said “Huge thanks to Anglia Mowers! We greatly appreciate their continued support for our work, particularly enabling us to reach out to older people in the community who need help with their gardens”.

is now ideally placed to achieve this and help even more riders achieve their goals.”

Previously the whole area was served by one group, North Norfolk RDA, which operated very successfully for 43 years from a number of riding stables, most recently Squirrelwood at Weybourne. Adult and child riders came from various special needs schools and care facilities as well as on a private basis.

Now the same trustees and experienced volunteers who ran North Norfolk RDA have taken the positive step to turn one group into two – enabling them to support a much wider area. Existing riders have already been accommodated at the new groups, which are also seeking new riders.

Each RDA Group is entirely staffed by unpaid volunteers and they hope to recruit more volunteers to help with this very rewarding equine therapy which benefits the riders so much in so many ways.

For further information about riding or volunteering with either of these groups, please contact either Worstead & District RDA Priscilla McDougall norfolkworsteadrda@gmail.com 01263 577247 or Norfolk Coast RDA Amanda Brownlow norfolkcoastrda@gmail.com 01263 740446

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Every January we have to send information to Cats Protection Head Office relating to the work that the branch has undertaken during the previous year. Seeing the information in black and white underlines how important it is to follow the guidelines we are given to ensure the cats have the best quality of care while with us and that we have done everything we can to make sure they are ready for their lives with new families.

When the cats first arrive in care they go to one of our vets to have a health check. At this stage they will receive their first vaccination which includes cover for the Leukaemia Virus and be micro-chipped, unless this has already been done. If they have not been neutered, arrangements will be made for this to be done at this stage. During the year 82 cats and kittens, either while in our care or after they were re-homed, were neutered, 123 cats were vaccinated and 118 micro-chipped at branch expense. We will also blood test the cat for FIV/FELV if its previous history is

Hedgehog Haven

Hal is the latest new arrival. He was being overwintered elsewhere, but has come into care as he had stopped eating and was losing weight.

He has been with me for 10 days and has had a course of antibiotics. His weight has now stabilised and at 600 grams is about hibernation weight, so I feel some of the problem is that his body is telling him it’s time to have a sleep. I will be keeping him in the hogspital, to make sure he doesn't lose too much weight while having a sleep.

A fundraising coffee morning is being held at Swanton Abbot Village on Saturday 16 March from 10am to 12noon.

Has your Dog or Cat missed their annual booster Vaccination?

unknown or if it is an unneutered female with kittens. Some of the cats from a multi cat household will also be tested when they come into care and we will also test some of the cats from feral colonies plus any stray cat not in good health to ensure that they are all healthy too and not likely to spread these two very nasty viruses. We had 38 cats in care plus 6 feral/ stray cats tested. One cat in care Jacko, last of the lovely young cats tested positive to FIV and is still from the multi cat household waiting for someone to offer him a home and one very poorly stray tested positive to FELV and was put to sleep.

As well as the cats neutered in care and under our neutering campaign, we also paid for 56 feral cats to be neutered, 4 of which were relocated to new sites in barns and stables. Cats that are not used to too much contact with people are happiest left in their normal environment, although we have on occasion discovered a cat in a colony to be a cat that has in the past lived in a home. This can usually be identified by its behaviour when taken to the vets to be neutered. Several cats have needed dentals this year and in total 30 have needed veterinary treatment for various reasons (23 of which were in care). Sadly, one little kitten had to be euthanized due to major health problems. No other cat or kitten has died in care. We are proud that, by following Cats Protection guidelines and not allowing the cats to mix, we have been able to isolate any infections, thus keeping these to a minimum.

If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively, you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered.

We are now on Facebook. You can find us under Cats Protection North Walsham.

Last year the biggest prize winner (a local person) won £203, and there were seven other winners (all local except one) of more than £100.

Over the last two years this raffle has raised a total of £6,501 of which £2,600.40 went to the prize winners and £3,900.60 went to the charities/organisations concerned. In fact, since some prize winners donated some or all of their winnings to the group, the actual total raised for all the charities was over £4,000.

Chaperone for the Royal Family

Would you like to be a part of Sheringham Carnival? For the forthcoming Carnival Season, a vacancy has arisen for a volunteer to organise and manage the role of Chaperone to the Sheringham Royal Family. As you may be aware, this comprises the Carnival Queen and Two Attendants. The Carnival Prince and the Carnival Princess are chaperoned by their parents. Sheringham has had a Carnival Queen for 66 years so the role carries with it a great deal of tradition. Obviously, the role also carries a great deal of responsibility due to the potential ages of those in the Family.

The role of Chaperone, covers many areas but focusses on organising and accompanying the Family during preparations and on official visits. In addition to Crowning Day, Sheringham Carnival Parade Day and Cromer Carnival Parade Day, these will include, for example, presentations and official appearances at some Carnival events and visits to various establishments such as care homes and other places within the community where they are always welcomed. Some dates outside of Carnival Week may also be included. All expenses will be covered.

Being a Chaperone can be busy at times but is always a very rewarding role to fulfil. Full assistance and support will be given to the successful applicant as they learn about the role.

If you are interested and would like to know more about the position, with no obligation, please email media.sheringhamcarnival@gmail.com and we will forward a more detailed specification regarding what is involved.

DON’T FORGET TO MENTION

THE SHERINGHAM INDEPENDENT WHEN REPLYING TO OUR ADVERTISERS

Can I give a quick update on where we are with two important topics? Parking problems at the Primary School

I’m pleased to report that the first meeting of the Task and Finish Group established after my Councillor Call for Action in December, to find answers to the parking issues around the Primary School, was scheduled for 6th February.

Hopefully, this is the start of work to find solutions. Dick Shepherd and I will continue to argue for local residents to be directly involved. I will report on further progress in the next edition.

Our campaign for a Roundabout at the junction of Holway Road/A148 Dick Shepherd and I are delighted to report that an application for funding a roundabout at the top of Holway Road has been submitted to the Local Enterprise Partnership. I mentioned in my last update that we were looking at funding from ‘the LEP’. A lot of work has gone into making that happen and so we are very pleased that this next important step has now been taken.

As I have reported before, we have had generous offers of financial support for the roundabout from Upper Sheringham Parish Council, from Sheringham Town Council and from Beeston Regis Parish Council and from some local businesses and we’re confident that NNDC will offer match funding of £100,000 to support the funding bid.

We will continue to work really hard to get this roundabout delivered but, as I say, it is good news that this important funding application is now in!

Best wishes, Judy Oliver

Party Leader Calls for Final Public Vote on Brexit

HEADS AHEAD

Leaving the EU we will be worse off, and without valuable freedoms and partners in an increasingly dangerous world” Lib Dem Leader Sir Vince Cable warned a packed public meeting in North Walsham on the 31st of January. “’No deal’ is unworkable with unenforceable WTO rules. Theresa May’s Deal would leave us with two more years of highly unsatisfactory dithering while her deal is negotiated. This is why the Lib Dems are calling for a final vote on Brexit, with the option to remain in Europe.” The party leader was speaking about the Brexit crisis alongside North Norfolk MP Norman Lamb at The Atrium Arts Centre in North Walsham. Both MPs commented on the negative nature of the Brexit

The meeting was held during a visit to North Norfolk by the Lib Dem leader with his wife Rachel. Earlier they attended a rally for party members and supporters at Paston College, North Walsham, launching the May 2nd local election campaign, an event observed by A Level politics students at the college. “Vince Cable was really inspiring”, commented 17year-old Paston student Nathan Wallace. “He’s a staple of British politics, and having him come into our community and engage with us is fantastic. I’d like to get involved with politics myself.” Note from the editor: The views expressed in this article belong to the writer, and are not endorsed by the proprietors at Rose Villa Publications.

Break-up without breaking down

by Rob Colwell, Director and Head of Family Services, Hayes + Storr

The frequency of separations at this time of year are well documented – family lawyers are inundated with new enquires between New Year’s Day and Valentine’s Day. Getting a divorce can have a major impact on your mental health, and an acrimonious or one sided break-up can result in serious consequences. Some will seek retribution, others won’t accept it, and some will find it difficult to imagine a future without their spouse.

Being mindful of a client’s mental well-being whilst ensuring we achieve the best possible results can be a careful balancing act. Our aim is to deliver an outcome which causes the least amount of distress in what is already a traumatic situation. The end of a relationship can be devastating, and no matter who ended it or when, life can feel empty and frightening – but life does continue and many people go on to live happy, fulfilled lives after divorce. That’s why we keep our clients focused on the future, encouraging them to avoid negative emotions and think practically about the potential outcomes.

The lawyers in the Family Services department at Hayes + Storr are members of Resolution, a national organisation of family lawyers committed to non-confrontational divorce, separation and other family problems. Our team is guided by Resolution’s conciliatory and person-centred approach, including:

• Helping clients focus on what’s important in the long-term • Balancing financial and emotional costs with what the client wants to achieve • Working with others to find the right approach and the best solutions • Managing stress in what can sometimes be a very stressful situation

Not only does this practical approach facilitate our clients’ ability to cope, it also ensures costs are kept as low as possible, avoiding entrenched arguments that have no resolve. Our goal is to help clients adapt to their new situation and look for alternative solutions to court proceedings, avoiding unnecessary stress, costs and delays.

If you’re concerned about yourself or anyone else going through divorce or separation, we recommend visiting the Relate website at www.relate.org.uk for lots of helpful resources,

and don’t forget you can call the Samaritans free of charge at any time on 116123. They offer 24/7 support every single day of the year and you don’t have to be suicidal to get in touch. You can also get a referral from your GP for free counselling sessions on the NHS. A break-up can be hard to manage, so speaking with health professionals to develop coping strategies can be very helpful.
