St Andrews Methodist Church Flower Festival ‘The Gift of Water’

Flower arrangers from towns and villages all over North Norfolk are busily planning for arguably the district’s premier flower festival which takes place at St Andrews Methodist Church, Cromer Road, Sheringham from Thursday 4 July to Sunday 7 July.

The annual flower festivals have been run for over 50 years and are a major event for both the church and the town, regularly attracting around 3000 visitors with several coach parties and many planning their holidays around the festival dates.

North Norfolk Poppy Line

Each year the talented flower arrangers design their floral displays to a specific theme with exceptional attention to detail and creativity.

Jacqui Hurst My wife and I wish to thank your team at The Sheringham Independent, Martin and Gwen Braybrook, PCC volunteers, ground staff at Beeston School and the Church Community for the wonderful support received relating to our recent exhibition at All Saints Church, Beeston Regis. The response from the public was truly humbling, with over £800 raised for the Church’s hospitality fund, which is due to be enhanced by match funding to over £1500. We also thoroughly enjoyed the splendid catering and fun atmosphere, with patrons acquiring many of the watercolours, prints and linocuts on offer at the show. Dibley in Danger

Tom works for the family firm of Denny’s Construction Ltd in Beeston Regis and has acted at the Sheringham Little Theatre many times, for several local amateur groups. He is a talented impersonator whose uncannily accurate impersonations of the voices of well-known celebrities such as Jeremy Clarkson, Liam Neeson and the late great Alan Rickman, have amazed all who have heard him. Tom’s ambition is to become a voice actor and he has already sent his demo tape out to agents. Meanwhile, Tom is back playing the part of Hugo Horton in The Vicar of Dibley- the final chapter? In this production, Hugo is coping with being a daddy, to baby Geraldine. To his horror, Hugo finds out that some long-held beliefs that he was going to pass on to baby Geraldine are not true. As he comes to terms with this shattering realisation, he has to cope with the possibility of a new mother, the loss of an old friend and then he finds out that Dibley itself is in danger. The proposed destruction of Dibley is set to become a reality! What can Hugo and the other Dibley residents do? Can they save the village or is it indeed, the final chapter for Dibley? All will be revealed in The Vicar of Dibley- the final chapter? at the Sheringham Little Theatre from 18 to 22 June 7.30pm, 2.30pm matinee on Saturday 22nd.Tickets £12. Box Office: 01263 761469 or sheringhamlittletheatre.com

Sheringham and District Philatelic Society

The Society is marking its 50th anniversary this year. Colin Turner founded the Society in 1969 and remained a member until ill health prevented him from pursuing his hobby any further. He sadly died in October last year. The anniversary has been marked with the gift of a mug to each member. The clever and attractive design on the mug was created by Jane Purkiss, a member for the last 25 years. Gerry Smith, Chairman, presented Jane with the newly created Colin Turner Shield for Outstanding Contributions to the Society, at the celebratory dinner held on 13 May at Banningham Crown. The dinner was attended by the President and Vice President of the Mid Anglian Federation and the President and Gerry both said a few words, which were much appreciated by those present.

Police warning after mobile phone thefts

Police are warning members of the public to be vigilant after four incidents of mobile phone theft in Norfolk and Suffolk by men using distraction techniques. In all incidents the men suspected of being involved were seen leaving the area in a dark coloured vehicle, possibly a BMW or a Mercedes. Members of the public are reminded of the below advice in order to prevent becoming a victim of distraction theft: • Busy, public areas such as shopping centers and public transport are popular places for distraction or pickpocket offences where we may be distracted or close contact with others is normal. Be alert to your surroundings. • Keep your mobile phone hidden from view such as in an inside pocket (not hanging out of a back pocket) or inside a closed bag. • Think about when you use your phone and who is around you. • Don’t leave your phone unattended in public places

Anyone with any information should contact the Breckland Engagement Officer, PC Paula Gilluley on 101 or by email at Paula.Gilluley@norfolk.pnn.police.uk. .

WHY CHOOSE WHY CHOOSE SILVER & WARD WARD SILVER SOLICITORS in in 2019? 20 19 ? SOLICITORS

“It’s a recurrent misconception that a larger firm is better.”

I am Clare Mayell and I own Silver and Ward Solicitors in Sheringham. I am an extremely competent and experienced solicitor. I appreciate that any time of the year can be a difficult time fo or many people to resolve legal issues of worry and concern, for example, making a will or Lasting Power of Attorney. As I have worked for 2 larger local firms I know what clients want and expect. My charges are significantly less than other solicitors in North Norfolk or Norwich and I provide 22 years of expertise and exceptional service. I pride myself in being one of the only solicitors who offffers a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, so clients can come in and obtain some initial advice and discuss costs and then make an informed decision. At a larger firm you just pay more. When a client rings or walks through the door they invariably get to speak to me as this personal and direct approach is important to my clients and I. I ensure complete confidentiality is an absolute priority. I advise new clients to “shop around” as I know that my charges are significantly less than other solicitors but I can offer the same expertise, if not better. I have and can act for clients across Norrffolk and the Country as we now have the use of Skype, emails etc. so it enables me to act for clients further afield. The reason that clients, near and far, instruct Silver and Ward is because of my expertise, exceptional service and competitive costs.

“I would say to any potential client with a legal issue or worry in 2019 to come and meet me face to face for a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, as you have nothing to lose but all to gain.

Home visits can be arranged or appointments outside of office hours including Saturdays. 0 1263 8 23465 or email clare@silverandward.co.uk 01263 823465

Carole initially trained in Graphic Design at the Lanchester Polytechnic in Coventry in the 1960s/70s but her interest in calligraphy did not start until several years later when she learnt the basic rules of calligraphy and lettering in 1984 under the tutorage of David Gould, the founder member of the North West Calligraphy Association.

In 1993 Carole went on to become a tutor in Adult Community Education teaching calligraphy at evening classes, and at weekend workshops and summer play schemes for children. During this time she was studying for her Certificate in Education. Once qualified she taught calligraphy to adults for fifteen years at local further education colleges on the Wirral.

Calligraphy itself can be created in many forms - from just letters or a script set out on a page to a highly decorated or illustrated piece of work to a three-dimensional style which is achieved through the use of dip pens. The former style is the one that her latest collection focuses on. Now retired and living in Norfolk she is a member of Norfolk Scribes, the group that allows her to work on such projects as her featured exhibition, “Pillars of Strength”. In this collection Carole mostly uses Designers Gouache for the lettering; often working on various backgrounds of tissue paper, Japanese silk paper or marbled papers and her work is usually decorated or illustrated.

You can see Pillars of Strength on display at the Council offices in Cromer Monday to Friday 8:30am to 5pm. www.rosevillapublications.co.uk

What about the Children? Shared parenting after devorce Maria Endall, Family Solicitor, Hayes + Storr

Coping with your own emotions during a break up is hard enough, let alone the opinions, and sometimes interference of those around you. The bigger and likely more troubling question

is: how do you make the separation easier on your children? So often separating parents begin to think of the children as ‘theirs’ – belonging to them and denying the important relationship between the child(ren) and the other parent.

Clearly children do not have the same insight or understanding into the reasons for the break-up, but if they are regularly surrounded by conflict, it is not uncommon for them to feel they are in some way implicated or responsible for it. Seeing the two people they love and need most, separate, can have a life-long effect on a child’s mental wellbeing, depending on how it is handled by their parents.

Children can’t be expected to ‘choose’ which parent to live with and, assuming that both the mother and father are fit to parent, what happens next? Although it may seem inconceivable at the time, shared parenting arrangements where children spend equal amounts of time with both parents is an option worth considering.

For shared parenting to work, you and your ex-partner will need to live within a reasonable distance of one another so that your children can attend the same school, continue friendships and maintain contact with other family members, causing the least amount of disruption to their lives as possible. Each parent then shares responsibilities which may

include school runs, attending after-school activities, appointments or helping with homework and so on.

Often, after a break-up, children remain living with one parent and have limited contact with the other. This level of contact can feel transient and insufficient. With a shared parenting arrangement, both parents retain equal status and the children benefit from the routine and stability of having both parents fully involved in their lives.

If you’re interested in a shared parenting arrangement, it’s worth exploring further with your solicitor or putting forward for consideration if you’re attending mediation.

Norfolk Knitters and Stitchers helped NNUH launch a community knitting project to make a beautiful display using crocheted and knitted forget-me-not flowers to mark Dementia Action Week 2019 at the NNUH Dementia Information and Advice Fayre on Monday 13 May.

Cromer Hospital was invited to join the project and a number of staff and their relatives, patients, Overstrand Poppylanders and NorseCare North Walsham contributed allowing Cromer to also have their own piece of artwork which is now on display in the main entrance.

Thank you to everyone who supported this worthwhile project, I think the result is lovely, what a big difference all your little flowers have made.

Sheringham to be represented in Lord Mayor’s Procession

Here is a fantastic opportunity for everyone in Sheringham to take part in the Lord Mayor’s Procession in Norwich on Saturday 6 July at 5pm. • the final section will comprise the creatures the earth's fragility’. Great progress has been made towards our involvement in the Lord Mayor’s Procession. At a meeting comprising Sheringham Carnival, Sheringham Town Council, Norwich City Council, The Puppet Theatre and Norfolk Wildlife Trust it was discussed what is expected of us and how it can best be achieved.

There is a lot to do but we were reassured and everyone is confident that we can choreograph a stunning family friendly parade entry to represent Sheringham.

In an exploration of what makes Sheringham unique it was explained that the chalk beds off our coast are a globally unique natural habitat with species of marine life not found anywhere else on earth - this ties in nicely with the procession’s theme of ;Charismatic Megafauna (big creatures) with particular reference to the local area, with a focus on sustainability and

The reef itself will be represented by nurturing adults in white tee-shirts carrying flowing pennants (made at one of our workshops). Weaving amongst them will be children wearing seaweed coloured t-shirts each with a sea creature puppet they made (also at a workshop)

We know that time is marching on but it is a wonderful creative opportunity with the chance to pick up some craft skills and support your town. It would be fantastic if you or your group think it is something they would like to be involved in.

Packed Town Meeting Applauds 21 Community Award Winners and the Sheringham Town Plan At a packed Town Meeting last month Sheringham came together to reflect all that is good about this vibrant town.

Town Mayor Madeleine Ashcroft set the theme for the next four years with quotes from Socrates who says that “the secret of change is to focus all your energy not on fighting the old, but building on the new,” while George Bernard Shaw wrote that ”progress is impossible without change and those who cannot change their minds cannot change anything!”

“Therefore, we are looking forward to changing a few things in Sheringham and you will see from the Town Plan that those changes are to enhance what we have and to enable both residents and visitors to enjoy our town even more than they do today,” she added.

For the first time Sheringham Community Awards included youth awards. Award winners included Schools Out Youth Group Junior leaders; Matthew Mutton, Harriet Loakes, Courtney Tooke, Cameron Skivington, Imogen Harrison and the Mix youth Group. Also Faith Kenny who supported the RNLI fund raising after their 2018 break- in and April Haywood who wrote a play the Snowless Christmas, directed and produced it at the High School and raised funds for Sheringham Plastic Aware. The play is going to be repeated on the beach during Carnival week so watch out for this. Mayor Madeleine Ashcroft commented that “with so much negativity often portrayed around young people it is important to acknowledge the fantastic contribution the young people in our Town are making to the community.”

Adult youth leaders were also recognised with Sarah Thornton, Vicki Harrison, Pete Skivington and Kevin Kimber receiving awards for their contribution to supporting the community’s young people.

Unsung Heroes awarded in the Adult section included Janet Eastwood of Sheringham Dementia Friendly Community and the Patient Participation Group, Tina Bleber-Wegg of Playing for Cake, Steve and Teresa Williams

for their support for music in the community, Station Adopters Sheila McGinley and Nicky Royle, Guy and Sue Moreton for encouraging Bell ringing and Maggie Rothe for her work in the community through the Lighthouse and Alison Sheridon for her work at the Primary School.

Sheringham Town Council was also particularly pleased to give an award of appreciation for the hard work of Shaun Lovatt, who is the street cleaner in Sheringham. It was felt his friendly demeanour and commitment to keeping Sheringham looking great should be rewarded as it makes Sheringham a very welcoming and pleasant place to be.

Deputy Mayor Liz Withington relayed the town’s appreciation for all the volunteers who received awards but also to all the community groups and organisations that are supported by an army of volunteers that make Sheringham the unique and strong community it is. This was reflected in the 20 plus organisations who exhibited their work at the Town Meeting for all to see.

Cllr Liz Withington informed the meeting that a new approach to conducting the Town Council’s activities will ensure that the newly elected Councillors can work in partnership with community organisations to make further connections which will bring even greater resilience and cohesion to the community.

The meeting continued to reflect the positive theme of change and of building a strong community with the Council reiterating how important it was for the community to be involved with their Councillors and that they are welcome to attend meetings. In addition, with three positions available for co-option, Mayor Madeleine Ashcroft said she hoped people will join the Council at such an exciting time.

The members of the community thanked the Town Council and in particular Cllrs Ashcroft and Withington for the development of this new approach and for the Council’s hard work and commitment in planning for the future of Sheringham. Cllr Madeleine Ashcroft Cllr Liz Withington

The Town Plan, building on the Council’s new approach, was launched at the meeting and was received positively by those present. The news that the Community Centre will be retained was cheered. Community engagement in 2018 had shown that the populace greatly valued the Community Centre. The Council has agreed to move their Administrative functions to the Community Centre in the Summer which will greatly increase efficiency.

Cromer Soapbox Derby 2019 Sunday 11 August - racing from 1pm

The race is on with this year’s Cromer Soapbox Derby already attracting entries from as far afield as Nottingham, Leicestershire and Bedfordshire and within the county of Norfolk from North Walsham, Norwich, Hunstanton and Thetford. Organisers are delighted with the response and still expect to receive more entries before the closing date 3 August and, as with last year’s event, a few late arrivals on the day.

Race organisers are hoping for a large local entry in this 50th year of Cromer Carnival with a few perhaps of the entries building soapboxes that reflect the history of the carnival. Event scrutineers say that they are happy to accept entries on the day as long as they arrive

www.cromercarnival.co.uk Entries close on 3 August but late entries could be accepted on the day if they arrive for the scrutineering at 11.30am. Racing starts at 1pm with the 3 classes racing to become the fastest soapbox of the day. Classes are 10 – 15 years, 16 -18 years and Adult.

sharp at 11.30am when the scrutineering opens so there is time to process them and make sure everything is in order.

This year event has gained the continued support from last years sponsor’s GTK ‘A Volex Company’ based in Basingstoke, Hampshire and Westcotec Traffic Safety Systems based in Dereham, both from the electronics industry. Both sponsors are expected to enter soapboxes into the event adding a truly international feel to the race.

Entry forms are available from CTIS Ltd 22 Holt Road Cromer or online at

There will be prizes for the fastest time in each class, with the fastest soapbox also winning the Malcolm McGreadie Shield, which the winner will hold for the year. There is also a Concourse de Elegance competition with winners in each class being judged on the design of their soapbox and the driver’s costume. The Sporting Car Club of Norfolk will be providing the timing and scrutineering for the event and are planning to bring along a number of cars for a static display.

Benefits tribunal waiting times increase again in Norwich, local MP discovers Norman Lamb, MP for North Norfolk, calls the 6 month average waits a “denial of justice”.

Norman Lamb said that “the system is imposing an intolerable financial pressure” on people forced to wait an average of 6 months for benefits appeals cases, as latest data showed waiting times are increasing.

The average waiting time for ESA (Employment and Support Allowance) claimants at tribunal was 26 weeks in October to December 2018 – an increase of 4 weeks compared to the figures covering July to September 2018. This was the longest average waiting time since at least April 2015.

That means that if an ESA claimant’s case was received by the courts on 1 January, they wouldn’t receive a final decision until the last week of June.

For other claimants, the picture slightly improved but overall remains poor.

www.rosevillapublications.co.uk

The average waiting time for PIP (Personal Independence Payment) claimants at tribunal was 25 weeks, according to figures released covering October to December 2018. That means the average wait has fallen by 1 week compared to the figures covering July to September 2018. But claimants still have to wait nearly 6 months for their appeal to be heard.

When decisions are finally made, they strongly favour of the claimant : 7 out of 10 PIP and ESA claimants received a decision in their favour, demonstrating that many original decisions are wrong.

Norman Lamb, Liberal Democrat MP for North Norfolk and former social care minister, uncovered the figures. He called on the Government to take action to halt the rise in average waiting times. He has received assurances from the Minister responsible for the courts that judicial appointments are being made in an attempt to reduce waiting times.

LOCAL MP IS EXTREMELY CONCERNED ABOUT SPENDING ON CHILDREN’S MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT IN NORFOLK

Children’s charity invites people across Norfolk to take a break and help

uK-wide children’s charity Action Medical Research is delighted to announce the return of its annual Cream Teas campaign.

Children with mental health problems in Norfolk are losing out compared to other parts of the country according to local MP and mental health campaigner Norman lamb.

People across Norfolk are invited to take a break, have a brew and help our fight for tiny lives.

Launched nationally in 2014, the initiative has so far helped raise more than £190,000 to fund ground-breaking medical research to help sick babies and children.

North Norfolk MP, Norman Lamb received a letter from Nigel Boldero and Howard Tidman, Co-lead Governors on behalf of the Council of Governors, at the Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust which outlined spending on local child mental health support.

“We are delighted to get this year’s fundraiser underway across the UK” says Action’s Chief Cream Tea Coordinator Gina Campbell. “We’re encouraging people to take time out of their busy lives and enjoy a delicious cream team with their friends, family or work colleagues.

The letter followed a report published by Anne Longfield, Children’s Commissioner for England. The findings of the report are extremely concerning, particularly for the East of England region. A subsequent Guardian article stated that, “Children who need help with mental health face a post code lottery”.

Ms Campbell explains “By ordering your cream teas you can help us raise funds for research that could help families across the country.”

How to order: To book your cream teas, visit creamteas.action.org.uk Boxes cost £6.50 (with a minimum order of 10) and include:

The report shows that there are wide variations in spending between regions which is severely impacting the children’s mental health support that is available. Looking specifically at the East of England, spend per child is shown as £5.32, staggeringly less than the £17.88 for a child in London.

2 x classic plain scones (Gluten free available) Rodda's Cornish clotted cream 40g 2 x Tiptree strawberry preserve (28g - each) Yorkshire tea Knife and serviette

Norman Lamb MP, has written to the Secretary of State for Health, Melanie Craig, Executive Lead for Norfolk and Waveney Sustainability Transformation Partnership and Sara Tough and Executive Director of Children’s Services at Norfolk County Council to highlight these alarming figures.

The deadline for orders is midday on 14 June, with deliveries direct to your door on Thursday 27 June.

In his letter, Norman Lamb MP has asked for clarification regarding how spending on Children’s Mental Health support in Norfolk compares with other comparable councils and asks what steps are being taken by the Norfolk and Waveney STP to address the serve shortfall in local spend.

Norman Lamb MP said “I am dismayed that such huge variations in spend on children’s mental health support occur from region to region. It is wholly unacceptable that children and young people face a post code lottery when it comes to receiving the support and care they deserve and are entitled to. I have written to the Matt Hancock MP, Melanie Craig and Sara Tough to seek urgent clarification on the figures released in this report. I also want to know what the Norfolk and Waveney STP plan to do to ensure the East of England doesn’t continue to fall so far behind when compared to the rest of the country on spending on children’s mental health support. Our children and young people in Norfolk, and across the region, deserve to have access to mental health support. At present, they are being badly let down.”

North Norfolk Photographic Society

Jim Hartje came from Peterborough to talk to North Norfolk Photographic Society on 15 May.

Originally from Surrey Jim Hartje moved to Peterborough in 1974 with a young family and got really interested in photography as they grew up. He has been a member of Peterborough Photographic Society since 1981 and he is now their Web Master.

Speaker Jim Hartje

He is an Associate of the Royal Photographic Society, a North & East Midlands Photographic Federation Lecturer and a Photographic Alliance of Great Britain Judge. He is also the holder of the Excellence FIAP, and British Photographic Exhibition 5 Crown distinctions – through successful participation in both national & international exhibitions.

Jim on this occasion spoke about Audio Visual techniques – the combining of photographs with sound (usually music) to make one polished presentation.

In the first part of the evening Jim showed how the software works. Using a combination of applications such as Photoshop to tailor the photographs to a suitable size, it was also necessary to tailor the sound to fit – Jim said he uses audacity now. Then specialist audio-visual software is used to create the show. Jim uses ProShow Gold. And members were shown how images can be made to dissolve one into another, to spin around on the screen among many other techniques.

After a break, Jim Hartje showed half a dozen of his audio visual shows. There was one on fungi, another on motor racing and several using landscapes – Jim after all is a prize-winning photographer!

Meetings of the North Norfolk Photographic Society are normally held on the first and third Wednesday each month at the Holt Community Centre. For further details please contact the club Secretary, Judith Wells at secretary.nnps@gmail.com or see the club website at http://www.nnphotosoc.org/

I always play the Lottery, each and every week, Hoping that one Saturday, I’ll hit a winning streak. Maybe my luck will change, my numbers will come up, Those little balls will do their job and call forth Lady Luck! I’ve often wondered, which is best, to dream or really win? For when you’re rich, you’re hounded by new-found kith and kin! Once you’ve bought up everything, it must begin to pall, Unless you hope to get another Lottery windfall! I’ve heard of people winning twice, which I think is really mean, What about the rest of us who’ve yet to win a bean? Mind you, I do wonder, if I’d won it once before, Wouldn’t I be tempted to go back and try for more? Greed is such a powerful force, its seeds are quick to grow; Perhaps it’s better just to dream, than sell your Soul for dough! Or perhaps not! Frances Wraight

Armed Forces Day

Armed Forces Day will be celebrated this year for the first time in North Walsham and will incorporate a commemoration of the 75th Anniversary of D Day. The event takes place on Saturday 29 June and will be held at the Atrium from 10am to 5pm.

An exhibition of military artefacts will take place in both the restaurant area and the gallery of the Atrium. The local Army Cadet Force and Air Training Corps cadets will also take part with their displays.

Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic introduces scientifically proven and researched skin care range

At 2pm the focus will be in the theatre with the Head Boy and Head Girl reading the poem ‘Normandy’ by Cyril Crain and the reading of the speech of General Eisenhower at the start of Operation Overlord.

Dr Formula skincare range has been specifically developed to maintain good skin health on a daily basis. Dr Formula skincare fights the first signs of ageing by targeting each layer of the skin to thoroughly hydrate and repair. The range introduces an affordable clinically proven integrated mix of products that work to achieve brighter and healthier skin.

Also a competition has been taking place since Easter between the pupils of the High School and the local cadet organisations putting to paper their thoughts on the possible threat facing the UK Armed Forces over the next 5 years. Sainsburys Supermarket in the town has given a monetary prize to the winner and runner up. After reading the winning entries on the stage the prizes will be presented by Air Commodore Kevin Pellatt the Armed Forces Commissioner in Norfolk.

As we age we lose moisture and elasticity in our skin which causes wrinkles and other signs of ageing to appear. The Dr Formula range rehydrates skin with a series of clinically proven ingredients. It includes lightweight non-oily hydrators and skin revitalising serums to stimulate collagen and elastin, whilst helping skin to repair and renew more rapidly. The range has been developed with your daily skin health needs in mind and will help refine pores and minimise fine lines and wrinkles as well as address skin tone and texture.

After the readings the film ‘Storming Juno’ which is about the D Day landings will be screened free of charge to the public. This free screening is possible because of a grant handed to the North Walsham Branch of the Royal British Legion by the Community Shop in the town.

Dr Formula is available exclusively at the Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic call 01603 736487 or view all our products and services at www.coltishallclinic.co.uk

Refreshments will also be available to the public from 10am. Please support this event which has been registered with the Ministry of Defence.

Ride into Paston History : A cycle route rich in both drama and beauty

Last month saw the launch of a new cycle trail through some of the most picturesque parts of Norfolk's countryside. The 'Paston Pathways' circular trail begins and ends at historic Mannington Hall, near Holt, and is as much a journey through the county's past, as it is the countryside. The cycle route was officially opened on Sunday 26 May by Lord Walpole, the current owner of Mannington Hall.

The cycle route has been developed by the Paston Footprints Project, a collaboration between the Paston Heritage Society and the University of East Anglia, that is supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

The Pastons were one of Norfolk’s most prominent families from about 1380 to 1750, rising from medieval peasants to becoming nationally important members of the aristocracy. They were, in many ways, the first modern family. What makes the Paston family truly unique is that they left a vast collection of letters and accounts of their lives in late medieval Norfolk - the now famous 'Paston Letters'. The three year Paston Footprints Project will highlight the remarkable story of the Paston family, the times they lived through, and make original resources available to the public for the very first time.

'Paston Pathways' is a unique series of walks and cycle routes being developed by the project, with the aim of getting people to take an interest in, and visit, many of the sites in Norfolk once associated with this remarkable family.

fabulous countryside." The connection between the Paston family and Mannington Hall stretches back many centuries. William Lumnor of Mannington Hall was a very good friend and supporter of John and Margaret Paston. In return, John Paston supplied timbers from his Saxthorpe estate for the building of the hall in the 1460s. The Paston Letters contain many warm references to William Lumnor, who often provided the family with advice and helpful lobbying on their behalf.

"The Pastons had their roots deep in the Norfolk countryside" says Dr Rob Knee of the Paston Heritage Society "and took a keen interest in many parishes and places. They spend vast sums on building great houses, erecting monuments in our churches, and acquiring vast areas of land. Many of these sites can still be visited today, and each one brings us a little closer to these intriguing individuals."

The new cycle route includes places such as Gresham Castle, where Margaret Paston was besieged in 1448, and from where she wrote the most extraordinary letter to her husband asking that he supply armour and crossbows to defend her.

In the 18th century Mannington was also later the home of Horatio Walpole, whose nephew, Horace Walpole, was instrumental in arranging the first publication of the now famous Paston Letters in 1787. Whilst others of the time had voiced scepticism about people wanting to read the personal letters of a medieval family from Norfolk, Horace Walpole declared that the Paston Letters 'makes all other letters not worth reading".

The cycle route also includes sites such as Barningham Winter church, where John Paston lies buried, and Itteringham church, where there is a fine memorial to a later Margaret Paston.

The event also marks the opening of Mannington's famous gardens for the season, and a number of other wildlife organisations will be in attendance, and 'The Greedy Goose' cafe will be serving light lunches and refreshments. The gardens are open from 11am until 5pm.

"The Paston Pathways walks and cycle routes", continues Dr Knee, "hopes to create links between all these individual places of interest, and place them within the wider context of Norfolk history. They are also a really good excuse to get out and enjoy some of our

east Anglia Air Ambulance are delighted to launch a brand new fundraising event TReK 24 - a 24 mile or 24k long trek across the North Norfolk Coast - and are looking for teams and individuals who are ready to step up and take on this challenge for our life-saving charity!

Take part in either a 24k route which starts in Cley, or sign up to the ultimate 24 mile challenge starting just south of West Runton, and finishing at the beautiful grounds of Holkham Hall.

There will be uplift stations along the way with refreshment stops and cheering squads to keep you refuelled and motivated!

The challenge has been launched as part of our Mission 24/7 campaign.

We need to become a 24/7 service to be there for up to 600 more patients every year, but we need to raise an additional £1m annually and have launched Trek 24 to help us work towards achieving this annual target.

■ 24km route - tickets cost £30, with a minimum sponsorship requirement of £200 per person ■ 24 mile route - tickets cost £35 with a minimum sponsorship requirement of £250 per person

Businesses invited to sign up for North Norfolk Skills & Careers festival

North Norfolk District Council and Paston College are organising event for local students

Local businesses are being invited to sign up for the North Norfolk Skills & Careers Festival – an interactive exhibition for 13 to 18-year-olds designed to inspire young people for their future careers and increase their awareness of the options open to them.

It follows a successful event last year, when more than 40 organisations exhibited to 600-plus Years 9, 10 and 12 students from local schools.

The festival is being organised by Paston College, Norwich City College and North Norfolk District Council. It will include interactive STEM events, and employers from a range of sectors and industries – including Holkham Estate, Lloyds Bank and Westover Veterinary Centre – will be at the event.

Businesses based in North Norfolk can exhibit without charge, and it will give them an excellent opportunity to inspire young people to develop skills needed in local businesses and inform them about future jobs that will be available in North Norfolk.

Cllr Sarah Butikofer, Leader of North Norfolk District Council, said: “This is a great opportunity for local businesses to connect with young people from across the district. These young people are our future, so it’s important that we show them the wealth of opportunities that are available to them on their doorstep.”

Corrienne Peasgood, Principal of City College Norwich and Paston College, said: “Last year’s event was a huge success and it was wonderful to see so many local employers, training providers and universities helping young people to decide on their next steps to realise their future ambitions. We are delighted to be hosting the North Norfolk Skills & Careers Festival again this year and we’re really looking forward to welcoming all our exhibitors and visitors.”

The festival will be held at Paston College’s Lawn site in Park Lane, North Walsham, on Tuesday, July 9 (9.30am-2pm). Businesses that sign up to attend will be listed on the festival website and their details included in the programme given out at the event. There will be light refreshments available throughout the day.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

We are happy to advise that we raised £783.77 at the Spring Sale mentioned last time. We are now making plans to hold a Hog Roast (with vegetarian option) at Dilham on 21 July. This event has always proved popular among our cat loving friends as they also have the opportunity to see some of the cats in care. Because it is as much a social event as a fund raising one, the cost of tickets (which must be purchased prior to the event) is still £10 and can be obtained by ringing 01692 535858 or e-mail to northwalshamcp@gmail.com.

Our volunteers will once again be making the event possible by helping behind the scenes or on the day. We are always pleased to hear from anyone interested in volunteering, not only at these events, but also with cat care and all other aspects needed to ensure the branch runs smoothly. If you are interested, please either give us a call or complete the contact form from our branch website.

At this time of year, we get many calls from people looking to give a home to a cat or kitten. In some instances, people already have other cats in their household and we do ask them to think carefully about getting another one. Apart from the daily costs of giving a cat a home, which include food, cat litter and veterinary bills for routine treatments, they need to consider the bigger bills which can occur unexpectedly and how they will pay for them. As individual cats like to have their own space, another important factor is whether there is enough room in their home to allow for this. If there is another cat in the household, they need to consider how a new “friend” will affect them. Having lived with other cats in the past does not necessarily mean that they will be happy having a new companion. If, having taken these points into consideration, they decide to go ahead and get another cat, they will need to ensure they are introduced gradually and that each cat has its own space. Cats Protection does have a leaflet outlining the best way of introducing cats to each other and we do have copies of this available if you are interested. As cats often come into care because there is conflict, or too many cats in the household, we feel it

is better to be wise before the event rather than having the heartbreak of handing one of your cats into care.

If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively, you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered. We are now on Facebook. You can find us under Cats Protection North Walsham

Hedgehog Haven

The last three Autumn juveniles have now been released into the wild.

Having a good start hopefully means that they will mature into breeding adults, helping keep this endearing species from extinction.

Now is the time of year when the first litters will be being born. Hoglets born now have more chance of gaining weigh and maturing enough to survive their first winter. Normal family size is four to six but on average a female manages to rear only about three of her offspring to independence.

Please be careful when gardening as a hedgehog’s nest can be difficult to spot and if disturbed a mother is likely to abandon her young.
