Paddle with a Difference The RNLI in Sheringham are indebted to two resourceful young men who wanted to make a difference.

On 6 July 2019 at 5 o’clock in the morning, the temperature being 22°C, two brave souls set out from Dungeness on paddleboards and headed out across the English Channel.

Six hours and 30 miles later they arrived in Boulogne-sur-mere and partook of a well-earned ‘pint’ of European Beer.

Weybourne WI new year lunch

On Wednesday 8 January, 30 members of Weybourne WI gathered at the Dales Hotel, Upper Sheringham, for our first meeting of the new year.

Continued from front cover... The two guys in question were Lewis Gray, crewman with RNLI Sheringham, and his friend Charlie Graham-Ward.

Lewis said “It was quite a tricky journey across some of the busiest shipping lanes in the world, however we were most grateful to Full Throttle Charters who provided the safety boat and crew to navigate our way across the Channel in a relatively small weather window.”

Now, they didn’t just do this on a whim but with the intention of raising money for the RNLI in Sheringham, which total amounted to some £5000.

On 5th January, as part of their donation to RNLI Sheringham, Lewis and Charlie presented a Beacon to be used for crew training at Sheringham. The Beacon is despatched into the North Sea and, some time later, after the wind and the tide have had an effect on its whereabouts, the lifeboat and crew set out to recover it.

Charlie and Lewis, not content with their efforts across the Channel, then took part in a Paddleboard Race along the Caledonian Canal from Fort William to Inverness, a distance of some 60 miles, no sighting of any monsters reported!

We all enjoyed a delicious lunch in the very pleasant surroundings and as always, the room was filled with much chatter and laughter, as members caught up with news following the Christmas break.

After the meal was finished, a short business meeting was held, which included a vote to choose the resolution we would like to put forward at the National Federation Annual Meeting.

Finally, Celia Howe thanked everyone for attending and wished all members a happy new year.

The next meeting will be held at Weybourne Village Hall on 5 February, when we shall be entertained by Barrie Morris, with a talk about the Weybourne Mad Hatter.

Council’s successful prosecution of fly tipping

place to live, the indiscriminate dumping of waste without any regard to our shared environment is totally unacceptable. I would urge anyone intending to use a third party to dispose of their waste to make sure they are a licensed waste carrier and to look to the SCRAP campaign for guidance.”

A man has been ordered to pay £2900 in compensation and legal costs after being found guilty of committing a waste offence at Norwich Magistrates Court. In lieu of a fine, he must pay £1600 to a farming company affected by the incident and £1300 in costs for North Norfolk District Council’s, prosecuting, legal and investigative costs.

SCRAP is an initiative across Norfolk which reminds people to check their waste is being taken away for disposal by a licensed carrier; these can be checked by asking for a Waste Carriers Licence or searching the company name on the Environment Agency website.

The case involved a large fly tip of household and DIY waste from the Norwich area, onto farmland outside Fakenham.

He admitted to knowingly causing or permitting the fly tip, by being the registered owner of the vehicle witnessed taking the waste. A landlord of the Norwich address gave a witness statement which included the vehicle, registration, and a description of the person who stopped and offered to take the waste from the site for a fee

People can avoid an unlimited fine by following the SCRAP code : · suspect all waste carriers · Check with the environment agency on 03708 506 506 that the provider taking your waste away is licensed · refuse unexpected offers to have waste taken away · ask what will happen to your waste · Paperwork should be obtained – get a full receipt

Cllr. Nigel Lloyd, NNDC’s Portfolio Holder for Environment, said “Fly tipping will not be tolerated in North Norfolk and I hope this successful prosecution serves to warn people that we will actively Local groups pursue all cases of fly tipping receive grants from in our District.

North Norfolk District Council’s Community Transport Fund

The worthy local causes which benefited from the latest round of funding include: · north norfolk Community transport - £21,000 towards their Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle Scheme to help people in wheelchairs get to medically related appointments. · aldborough Village Care – £1500 towards a volunteer car scheme for patients registered with Aldborough Surgery who are unable to drive or access alternative transport to access medical appointments. · burnham Market area Community Car scheme – £1,000 towards a community car scheme for medical appointments for those people living in Fakenham, Gt Walsingham, Little Walsingham, Holkham, Stiffkey, Wells, Wicken Green, Wighton, Warham and Binham areas. · aylsham & District Care trust – £1,500 towards the running costs of the Shoppers Minibus covering Corpusty, Colby with Banningham, Erpingham.

North Norfolk District Council makes Compulsory Purchase Order

NNDC aims to bring the Shannocks Hotel back into redevelopment to secure a positive future for the seafront property

North Norfolk District Council has today made a Compulsory Purchase Order in respect of the property known formerly as the Shannocks Hotel in Sheringham.

Interested parties will be served with relevant notices, and a period for objections will now be open for submission to the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government.

Notwithstanding the Council’s formal compulsory action, the Council hopes that the owner will engage with it to agree the terms of a voluntary sale, to bring about a swift resolution to this long running matter.

The Council is committed to ensuring redevelopment as part of ongoing efforts to secure a viable future for the seafront landmark. A Compulsory Purchase Order will enable the site to be brought back into use for the economic and social well-being of the area and the community.

Cllr. Colin Heinink said “I am delighted that

the council is taking action to remedy this long running issue. The site, if redeveloped, could bring so much to Sheringham’s seafront.”

The order is just one step in the Council’s wider commitments to pursuing owners of not only long-term unoccupied properties, but properties in poor condition and endeavouring to bring them back into use to try and curb vacancy, disrepair and anti-social use.

Objections to the CPO can be submitted to the Secretary of State until 19 February 2020. A copy of the order and of the accompanying map may be seen at all reasonable hours at Eastlaw, Council Offices, Holt Road, Cromer, Norfolk, NR27 9EN.

Residents in North Norfolk and Broadland who would like to see in the new decade by making new friends and breathing new life into their communities are being encouraged to get involved in exciting new initiatives from Community Action Norfolk (CAN) and the North Norfolk Volunteer Hub at Merchants’ Place, Cromer. ‘We know that Christmas is a time when people often think about those who are lonely and isolated’, says Rachel Sidell, manager of Merchants’ Place,

Are you thinking big for 2020?

As the dust settles on a busy Christmas & New Year many people are now turning their thoughts to special occasions in the year ahead.

2020 is set to be a big year for those tying the knot as many venues report record ceremony bookings but let’s not forget those with other milestone celebrations throughout the year. Our team at The Old Rock Shop Bistro have been providing a reliable and trusted catering service across North Norfolk & Norwich since 2005. ‘and while people always respond magnificently, it’s important to remember that loneliness does not end on Boxing Day! January and February can be very hard months to get through if you are on your own or unable to get out, so we want to promote and provide opportunities for people to get together and support each other in ways that they will enjoy and will benefit both themselves and others’. The Cromer Good Neighbour Scheme, recently launched by CAN, is one of the new local initiatives designed to bring people together to get to know and help others in their community. Cromer’s scheme is one of several that CAN oversee across North Norfolk and Broadland which would welcome new people who would like to get involved. CAN also run ‘Connect’, a service whereby isolated people can be linked with an individual volunteer who can help them re-engage with social opportunities in their local area. CAN and the North Norfolk Volunteer Hub will be focusing on a number of communities in particular

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection

Already this year we have had lots of requests for help with neutering cats and kitten under our £5 Neutering Campaign. We are only too happy to help in this way as there will be less unwanted kittens later this year. We do believe it has had an impact on the number of kittens needing our help and long may this continue. Many people are not aware that a female cat can become pregnant from 4 months old, so it is important to neuter as soon as possible from this age. Of course, at that age, a kitten is not fully grown and if she does have kittens it will mean that, instead of enjoying life as the kitten she still is, she will be responsible for nourishing and caring for her own family instead We are always dealing with requests for help with neutering feral cats and will be only too happy to lend one of our traps to catch them and pay for the cost of neutering at one of the vets we use. A new directive from our Head Office advises to also ensure that these cats are treated for fleas and worms and receive a single dose of vaccine for cat flu and feline parvovirus while at the vets. This will be paid for from branch funds.. At present, apart from older cats, Darcy, Phoebe and Bilbo in residence, we also have several young cats all under 1 year old. None of these have had the benefit of living in a home so are looking for new homes with experienced cat people who will give them plenty of time to adapt to their new surroundings. Milton, for instance, arrived with his mother and her younger kittens, having been living in someone’s garden. Mum and her young family have all been re-homed and, although still not happy with too much contact, he loves to play and will accept a fuss, but not if he is on his activity centre. Pearl, Benji, Brexit, Lennie, Izzy and Maddie have also learned to accept the love and care of their carers, and once settled, will give lots of pleasure to their new families. They do all need homes with no young children and although some may prefer living with a companion cat, they would probably be better in homes without dogs. Finally, apologies to Dick, Ray’s brother, for not mentioning, in our previous edition, that he helped lay the floor of the cats’ pens!

If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.

If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Alternatively, you can visit www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk/ for a description and photographs of the cats before giving us a call on the above number to find out where any particular cat is being fostered. We are now on Facebook. You can find us under Cats Protection North Walsham

Million pound training fund helps local lifesaver learn vital skills life at sea I always wanted to become a part of for a second 5-year period until December

A volunteer crew member at Sheringham RNLI lifeboat station has had a vital part of their crew training funded by Lloyd’s Register Foundation.

Matt Blake, 31, from Sheringham, recently travelled to the RNLI College in Poole, Dorset, to complete the charity’s Crew Emergency Procedures course. Matt was inspired to join up as a volunteer crew member firstly as a young trainee before he went off to university and after completing his degree and subsequently returning to Norfolk he rejoined the Sheringham Crew.

The course sees volunteer crew being trained in a variety of crucial subjects such as how to deal with fires aboard lifeboats, how to ‘abandon ship’ in the event of an emergency (with a 4m jump into water), team survival swimming, coping in a life-raft in simulated darkness, how to right a capsized inshore lifeboat, and the importance of lifejackets. It also includes sessions on the correct use of flares, fire extinguishers and throw bags.

Talking about the training, Matt who volunteers as a crewman said ‘Having been born and bred in a coastal town and witnessing the fantastic work of the local RNLI in saving

that voluntary service. I love the practical aspect of training where you also learn these amazing transferable skills.’ Matts training took place in the Sea Survival Centre at the RNLI College, where he was

2020. This additional funding of £1.06m brings their total support for RNLI crew training to just over £2.46m since 2008. More than 3,000 RNLI volunteer crew members have now received the training thanks to Lloyd’s Register Foundation’s funding. Alex Evans, Lifesaving Training Manager at the RNLI said, ‘We are so grateful to Lloyd’s Register Foundation for funding this vital part of our volunteer crews’ training.

joined by other RNLI volunteer crew members from around Ireland and the UK.

The training was funded by Lloyd’s Register Foundation, a charitable foundation that helps to protect life and property by supporting ngineering-related education, public engagement and the application of research. The Foundation has committed to funding the RNLI’s Crew Emergency Procedures course

‘Their support is very important to us and it’s fantastic how, so far, over 3,000 of our crew members have benefitted from Lloyd’s Register Foundation funding this part of their training. As only one in ten of our volunteer crew members comes from a professional maritime background, the Crew Emergency Procedures course is crucial in giving our volunteers the training they need and helping keep them as safe as possible while carrying out rescues. It gives volunteers the confidence to save lives even in the most challenging conditions.’

This donation is the latest in Lloyd’s Register Foundation’s relationship with the RNLI, which was recognised in 2010 when it received the Group Supporter Award from HRH Prince Michael of Kent in recognition of its valuable support of the charity.

Sheringham and District Philatelic Society

Monday 14 January saw the Society’s first meeting of the New Year.

Your legal matters in safe hands for generations

Sixteen members and one visitor from the King’s Lynn Philatelic Society came together for an informal sales evening. There was a good variety of items for sale, including albums of First Day Covers, packets of used stamps, both GB, commonwealth and foreign, a selection of mint material and postal history items. It was an opportunity to ‘talk stamps’ and to catch up with each other as well as to buy and sell.

Hayes + Storr Solicitors handle a whole range of family, property and business legal matters with care and professionalism.

The next meeting will be on Monday 10 February at, 7.30pm at West Runton Church Hall for the AGM and a silent auction.

This would be a good opportunity to come to meet members and to consider joining. Contact Gerry 01263 579529 or Jim 01263 721043 for more details.

SCOUTS FOCUS THEIR RADAR ON ACHIEVING EVEN MORE TOP AWARDS IN 2020! potatoes and other lunchtime snacks – all made individually by a really friendly team of volunteers.

Thanks to the tremendous support and thoughtfulness of Manager Lynn Kerslake and the amazing enthusiasm and encouragement of so many of her Neatishead volunteers, more than 60 Beavers, Cubs and Scouts from across North East Norfolk experienced a specially arranged visit with talks, and guides through each of the activity rooms at the Royal Air Force Air Defence Radar Museum (ADRM) on the site of the former Royal Air Force radar and control base RAF Neatishead, close to the village of Horning in the heart of the Norfolk Broads.

Sally Weekes, who had organised the Top Awards Celebration for the District Scouts, says that the Neatishead team (many were people who had worked at the RAF base when it was an operational centre of the nation's air defence and about the most secret place in Britain) were so helpful in settingup the event and extremely knowledgeable ensuring that two groups of Beavers, Cubs and Scouts each had a fascinating insight into the role Neatishead radar played in WWII and the Cold War, viewed the Bristol Bloodhound missile outside and were allowed to sit down and experience hands-on real equipment that once showed what the enemy was up, Cotishall Search and Rescue and dressing-up, as well as (possibly the biggest thrill of all!) sitting in the cockpit of a Jaguar ground-attack craft, and seeing the recently acquired cockpits from Lightning fighter aircraft. Our hosts also arranged for parents to have their own minitours and we were all able to enjoy the kind hospitality of the amazing catering team throughout the day who provided copious hot & cold drinks, sandwiches, soup, jacket

Sally explained that this very special event was arranged to celebrate our young people who had achieved their Chief Scout Awards - the top award achievable in each Scouting Section. Sections from Aylsham, Buxton Lamas, Cromer, Hoveton & Wroxham, Mundesley, Rural (Roughton Mill), Salhouse, Sheringham and West Runton attended with 31 Beavers, the first and youngest section of the Scout Group generally aged between 6 and 8 years old, gaining their Bronze Awards; 27 Cub Scouts, the second section of the Scout Group following on from Beavers, young people generally aged between 8 and 10 years old, gaining their Silver Awards; and 22 Scouts, generally aged between 10 ½ to 14 years old, gaining their Gold Awards. They were also joined and supported by Explorers, 14 to 18 years old and several Scout Network members, 18 to 25 years old. We were also very pleased that our North Walsham Young Leader, Jack Cowell, made it back to Norfolk from Agricultural College to be presented with his very special Young Leader Belt for completing all of his Young Leader training.

if anyone is interested in joining scouting, whether a young person or adult in a nearby local Group, please contact District Commissioner Paul Henriksen at dc@northeastnorfolkscout.co.uk or 07766 762972 The museum is now closed for the winter but re-opens on the 31st March 2020.

Clapham & Collinge Launch New Year Charity Lasting Power of Attorney Scheme

Make it your New Year's Resolution to get your legal affairs in order and plan for the future. Clapham & Collinge Solicitors are offering a 25% discount on Lasting Powers of Attorneys throughout January 2020. We will also make a £40 donation per Lasting Power of Attorney appointment to support 4 Norfolk based charities. Our chosen charities are Age UK Norwich, Keeping Abreast, North Norfolk Community Transport and Cruse Bereavement Care Norwich.

Although it is often difficult to think about, it is crucial that we plan for the future and ensure we can manage our financial affairs in the event of an incapacitating illness, accident or injury. Everyone understands the importance of a Will, but Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPA) are a bit more obscure in the public sphere and often people are not aware why they need them. Government research has made it clear that there are dangerous misconceptions about managing your affairs when you lose mental capacity….

• 73% of people think if a couple have a joint bank account and one person can't make decisions for themselves, their partner can legally make decisions for them both. This is untrue. An LPA will however give you consent to access joint funds to pay and monitor financial aspects of a joint account.

• 72% of people think your next of kin always gets the final say in treatment decisions at hospital, if you can't make them yourself. This is untrue. Medical decisions need the specific, agreed consent of the person involved, before a next of kin can make treatment or welfare choices on someone else's behalf.

(Powerofattorney.campaign.gov.uk, 2019) With this scheme we hope to raise awareness about the legal and financial implications of dementia and highlight the importance of getting your legal documents in place for peace of mind.

Property and Finances – as soon as it has been registered • At the point you no longer have sufficient capacity to make certain decisions yourself or; • While you are still able to make decisions but are physically unable to carry them out or you want someone else to make decisions for you Health and Welfare – can only be used if you cannot make the decision yourself (unconscious or lacking capacity).

who can be an attorney? • A family member • A trusted friend

The cost of preparing and registering a Lasting Power of Attorney will depend on whether you wish to have a Property & Financial Affairs Lasting Power of Attorney and/or a Health & Welfare Lasting Power of Attorney prepared and registered.

To claim your discount and book your January appointment, please contact our Client Relations Team on 01263 823398 or email enquiries@clapham-collinge.co.uk Appointments must be booked by Friday 31st January and must take place by Friday 28th February 2020.

Cromer and Sheringham Probus Club

what is a lasting Power of attorney? A Lasting Power of Attorney is a legal document that allows you to appoint one or more people (known as 'attorneys') to help you make decisions or to make decisions on your behalf.

On Tuesday 14 January, after a very tasty lunch, Peter Lawrence gave a fascinating talk called ‘Beneath the City Streets’. Peter introduced himself as a former Metropolitan Police officer working in Special Operations at Scotland Yard, looking after the Royal Family and the Embassies. Unusually, he was tasked with investigating underneath the streets of London! Peter explained that subterranean London comprised a network of rivers (for example, the Westbourne, Tyburn and Fleet), tunnels (including the Tube and the old Post Office railway system, now a tourist attraction) and sewers. Archaeological finds from Roman, Saxon and medieval times reveal the layers of London’s history, Peter specifically mentioning the Temple of Mithras (which one can see free of charge) and the crypt beneath St Bride’s Church in Fleet Street. The ‘Great Stink’ of 1858 led to Joseph Bazalgette building a new government-funded sewer system. The massive project involved using 315 million bricks and 25,000 labourers. Bazalgette also built architecturally amazing pumping stations in strategic places; they were cathedrals to sewage! To support and hide the sewers along the Thames, Bazalgette created the vast embankments that still exist today. The construction work made the river narrower, thus turning the Central London part of the Thames into a canal. At the end of the talk, Peter proposed wryly that we should close the M25 (not his favourite motorway!) and put the traffic underground, acknowledging that using tunnels in this way was not a new idea! On behalf of the 38 members present, our Chairman, Dave Williams, thanked Peter for his interesting talk. If you are a retired or nearly retired professional or businessman and would like to join us at one of our monthly meetings, you will be warmly welcomed. Please contact our lunch secretary Dave Vickery on 01263 824306 or visit our website www.candsprobus.club for more information.

This gives you more control over what happens to you if you have an accident or an illness and can't make decisions for yourself (where you 'lack mental capacity') or when you simply want to delegate the role to someone you trust.

what happens if i don't make a lasting Power of attorney? • No one has legal authority to act on your behalf – your spouse and children have no automatic rights to make decisions on your behalf • Someone will need to make an application to the Court of Protection for a Deputyship Order • This can be costly, time consuming and you may not end up being assisted by the person you would have chosen yourself

One for the Veggies!

Whether you have started the year doing Veganuary, or are just trying to have the odd meat free day, this recipe is one you definitely need to have in your repertoire. Even the determined meat eaters want a slice of this loaf once they smell it, as the flavour is so rich and full, and the textures are just gorgeous. This has been a few years in the making, having gone through various changes and adaptations, and is what we served on Christmas Day this year; needless to say, there was none left!

Cranberries and roast chestnuts can be purchased in most supermarkets, and although this isn’t the cheapest nut loaf recipe, it is so worth the extra pennies! Miso paste can be bought from all good health food stores, and keeps a long time in the fridge. You can add it to home made soups, as it adds a fabulous umami flavour, and having live cultures in it, is very good for your gut, so an all-round great purchase. Even if you’ve never been tempted by vegetarian food before, give this a go – I promise you will be converted!

Run a little olive oil around a 2lb loaf tin to prevent sticking, and preheat your oven to 180°. Place onion, carrot and garlic in a couple tblsp olive oil in a deep frying pan or wok, and cook gently until getting soft giving the occasional stir, around 10 mins. Add in the lentils and stir well to coat in the oil, and then add in your stock and bring to boil.

Simmer for 10 mins, and then add in sage, chestnuts, cranberries and stir in the miso. Continue simmering for a further 10 to 15 mins until most of the water is absorbed and the lentils are soft. Take off the heat and stir in the oats, combining well. Pour mixture into the loaf tin and firm down a little with the back of a large spoon and bake in the oven for 35 – 40 mins, until slightly brown on the top. Run a spatula around the edges to loosen. Leave in tin to cool slightly, and turn out smartly onto a chopping board, knocking the bottom to loosen the loaf. Leave to stand for a further 15 mins to enable easy cutting (I cover with foil and a clean tea towel.) Can be portioned once cold (put in fridge to properly chill before cutting) and frozen in portions for easy roast dinners. Reheat in the foil at the bottom of the oven. Carolyn burn

New Year, New Hope

With more and more of us, frankly, scared at the reality of climate change and stimulated to seek ways of living more sustainably, an intiative towards discussing and developing sustainability as a way of life took place during 2019.

‘Sustainable Saturday’ is a series of monthly talks and debates held at the Friends Meeting House, Cremer Street, Sheringham on the second Saturday of the month, from 10am to noon, with, usually, a guest speaker in the second hour.

Momentum was gained during the course of the year, to the point that the ever- expanding group of people eager to share and promote sustainable living in Sheringham has agreed to organise an Umbrella group – ‘Sustainable Sheringham’ - that could coordinate intiatives with representatives from various concerned groups across North Norfolk.

The first meeting of 2020, held on 11 January, included input from Sheringham Deputy Mayor and local Councillor, Liz Withington, who advised the meeting on various town and district initiatives as well as local planning

protocols and their potential environmental impact and how anyone of us can access the details on the NNDC website and make comments and suggestions or lodge protests.

She also reminded the meeting of how Sheringham has become the first town in Norfolk to be declared ‘plastic free’ - a commitment by local businesses to limit or abolish the use of single use plastics. Focusing on ways to promote sustainability, those in attendance were very enthusiastic about the possibility of having a ‘Green Celebration’ event, in conjunction with Sheringham Carnival, to be organised by the fledgling ‘Sustainable Sheringham’ group. In order to raise the group’s profile and to evangelise effectively, it was agreed that setting up a Facebook group page would be an excellent way to communicate to the community as well as reaching out to other relevant, local groups and independent activists.

The next ‘Sustainable Saturday’ will be at the Friends Meeting House, Sheringham on Saturday, 8 February (10am-12pm) where the guest speaker will be Judy Miller , talking about ‘Sustaining Self’ and

Sheringham Football Club v Wisbech St Mary (away) 18/01/20 In manic mud conditions we Battled at Beechings Close, Hoping that our unbeaten run Would gain another dose!

Saint Mary took an early lead And, just before the break, A really massive blow - unfair The Shannocks then did take.

An offside goal (so blatant that) Stevie Wonder would see, Sent all tensions soaring as charge On did the Wisbech 'three!' The ball was poked past Jacko whilst Away noise amplified; Vocal ticking-offs took place As many tempers fried!

The turning point came post halftime A world class tackle saw Back from the harsh jaws of defeat Our hopes of comeback claw.

The Saints broke clear, and two-onone Were just about to shoot, When Captain Cox - in van Dijk style Swiped the ball from his boot! We chugged on but no goal would come It was a heavy slog, But then, at last, our number one Took place upon the bog!

With fifteen left the boggy pitch Enjoyed Crosby's free-kick, Which beat the wall, keeper and all Ice cool and calm and slick! And then top scorer Tim broke free On the bog: number two, Arrived after he flicked it home And business for us - do! Chances were carved at either end And like Leiston last week, From two behind we bust a gut As for three points we'd seek!

It was brill to see Abbott back When coming off the bench, A class player that, without doubt Will have great thirst to quench!

Two each it stayed, and overall The plusses we shall take, There are lots of games left to play And plenty is at stake. Next week we head to Mulbarton The league leaders sit clear, But Reds, without a single doubt Will travel - minus fear!

Chris Wigger's done a smashing job The whole club: one big team; It's seven games unbeaten now As on we charge full steam! Tony Bolster

Amanda Moriarty’s Memorial Prize 2020

In 2017 Amanda Moriarty, a long serving board member and Honorary Treasurer of the Norfolk based Contemporary Glass Society (CGS), passed away.

“In memory of her enthusiasm and encouragement of glass making, the society offers an annual prize,” says CGS Chair Sue Purser Hope. “The aim is to help a CGS member to fulfil an aspiration or add to their technical skill, something that they would find difficult without this prize.”

Renowned glass painter, Mark Angus is offering a CGS member the chance to be tutored and to work in his studio in Graz, Austria, this autumn. Amanda had been a student of Mark’s when he was teaching in the School of Art and Design, Bristol; 25 years ago, just as she was beginning her own glass journey.

The CGS is looking for a serious student, who wants to develop ideas and skills in a career of glass painting. They must have some previous experience of glass painting.

applications for this two week residency can be found on the CGs website https://www.cgs.org.uk/news/2020-amanda-moriarty-prize. Deadline for applications is 28 February 2020.

GREAT MUSIC AND LAUGHTER AT BRISTON

Briston played host to the ‘Better Late Than Never Christmas Organ Show’ on Friday 10 January, and what a night that turned out to be!

With live music from Mick Leary on Hammond organ and Yamaha keyboard, and several comedy items, including an amazingly funny 13 minute video of the trials of Benjamin Blige, father of the bride,

about to make his speech at the reception, and realises he has left it at home. His hilarious adventures getting home and back included cameo parts from all the guys and girls who help put on the Briston organ shows every month - and what stars they proved to be! From the post lady getting her hand stuck in Benjamin’s letterbox to the bit where he nearly demolishes an icecream van by backing into it, mayhem from start to finish was the order of the day!

The January show is always a charity fundraiser, and this was no exception, as the proceeds from the show made £791.40 on the night, and with the further £656 raised during the last year, the ORBIS Flying Eye Hospital will be getting an overall cheque for £1447.40 - well done all of you, our wonderful supporters. Our next show is on Friday 14 February,
