SHERINGHAM AND CROMER LIONS CLUB
Continued from front cover... On Saturday 30 September we held a ‘Last Night of the Proms’ Brass Band Concert in the beautiful church of St. Andrew the Apostle in Holt. Over one hundred people attended, including members of other Lions Clubs. Church volunteers made us so welcome and they provided snacks and drinks. A great evening was had by all and a profit made on tickets and raffle prizes to swell our coffers for other local needy causes. Thank you so much to Cromer and Sheringham Brass Band members for their wonderful playing and singing. It really did seem like the Last Night of the Proms at the Royal Albert Hall with flags waving and guests joining in.
I cannot emphasize too strongly what a lovely church St. Andrews is and so full of history. Visit yourselves. It is open every day of the year.

Hedgehog Haven
Autumn is underway so when raking fallen leaves, please check for sleeping hedgehogs better still make a large pile of dry leaves in a quiet corner for a nest.
With 5 November approaching, another ideal nest site is a bonfire so please check before lighting.

In the last three weeks, five hedgehogs have been released back into the wild. Unfortunately, Trump (pictured) is blind so she stays in my care as a long-termer - a blind hedgehog doesn't make a nest so would be vulnerable to the elements and other animals.
Scottish broadcaster for Holt Dinner
This year’s guest speaker at Holt Rugby Club’s annual dinner will be the leading rugby commentator and broadcaster, Ian Robertson. He joined the BBC as a rugby commentator in 1972 and for over 40 years has covered some of the greatest rugby matches around the world.
Ian Robertson is now recognised as one of the UK’s leading rugby after-dinner speakers. As well as a wealth of sporting anecdotes, he can draw on his wider experience in the media. He has written biographies of leading rugby players, including Englishman Billy Beaumont, Welshman Gareth Edwards and Scot Andy Irvine.
The dinner will be held at the Club’s Bridge Road clubhouse on Thursday 2 November. Tickets, at £48 are available, from Andrew Ross on 07889 958008 email arosss@btinternet.com

TESCO COMMUNITY NEWS
What a summer! Thank you to all who have supported our fund raising throughout the year. We’ve raised £4,779 for our charity partners, Diabetes UK and The British Heart Foundation. Amazing! We also supported Help for Heroes during the ‘40s weekend, raising a further £65.
One of our Managers, Jonathan King, is fundraising for the Motor Neurone Disease charity. He took part in the first London Swim for MND and has raised over £700 so far. Fantastic result Jonathan.
We are fundraising at present to provide kit for the Sheringham Youth Football Team.
I’d like to sincerely thank all the Ceroc Fusion dancers who gave up their weekend to dance outside our store during the ‘40s Weekend. They certainly added to the atmosphere and looked fabulous.
Now schools are back, I’d like to remind teachers, Scout, Brownie, Guide leaders etc., that we offer Farm to Fork trails in store. These are aimed at primary aged children but can be adapted for younger or slightly older children. We can only take up to 15 children at a time due to space restrictions, but it’s a great way to have fun
Henleys Expansion
Henleys Estate Agents in Cromer have expanded their team again! It has been a very successful year for Henleys having so far sold more properties than all the other estate agents in the NR27 and NR11 postcodes during 2017 (statistics provided by Rightmove) Director Ryan Ratcliffe says “We’ve had such an amazing year we’ve recruited another member of staff. We have worked with our new team member Eleanor Rose before and we had no hesitation in offering her a position within Henleys.”

while you learn!
Throughout the summer our foyer has been used by community groups, raising awareness and funds. We’ve had local charities selling raffle tickets, The Embroiders Guild, RNLI-Paddle Across The Channel, book stall, Save the Children, Sea Safety Group, Norfolk Community Healthcare NHS Trust.
Our windows have been brightened throughout the summer by the gorgeous pictures coloured by children in store. We also had entries for the Fairtrade Postcard Competition on view. We’ve supported the Sheringham Primary School Nurture Group by providing breakfast foods to make sure they have a good start to their days.
that are close to home. It really makes a difference.

During this half term, we are proud to have two sixth formers from Sheringham Woodfields School doing work experience. They are doing a brilliant job.
I’d like to remind local causes that it is easy to apply online at www.tesco.com/ bagsofhelp to take part in our Bags of Help Scheme. The scheme awards either £1,000, £2,000 or up to £4,000 to chosen groups. Voting is over two months by our customers. This money comes from the Government bag charge. Scam alert over rogue traders claiming to be ‘working with the council’ North Norfolk District Council warns residents not to be taken in by cowboy traders asking to check their roofs
Householders are being advised to beware of rogue traders who are offering roof-insulation checks and claiming it is all part of a free government scheme.
North Norfolk District Council has been contacted by residents checking the validity of claims made by these doorstep canvassers. One elderly gentleman reported that he had been told it was a free government incentive being rolled out by local councils.
However, neither North Norfolk District Council nor Norfolk County Council have any ties to these tradesmen and are not involved with any such schemes.
The callers try to make an appointment to climb on to the roof in order to check the health of tiles and insulation. But this is a well-known scam by rogue traders who target vulnerable residents and then try to con them out of large sums of money for unnecessary work. Sometimes, these workmen will deliberately cause damage on the roof when they inspect it, and then pressure the householder to pay for it to be repaired. North Norfolk District Council has received reports that Mundesley is one of the places recently targeted by these traders.
Tom FitzPatrick, Leader of North Norfolk District Council, said “These callers are preying on vulnerable customers and are incorrectly claiming they are taking part in a council-led scheme. This is not true, and residents should not agree to any appointments with these people. Some of these cowboys can be very persuasive but it is important to check out any claims they might make. In this instance, what they are telling householders is untrue.”
Brian Chatten, from Norfolk County Council’s Trading Standards, said “Our advice is always to be cautious of cold calls - whether received via email, post or telephone - and we strongly recommend not carrying out any transactions based on cold-calling. Anyone with any doubts should check with Norfolk Trusted Trader. Advice is always available via the Citizens Advice Consumer Service on 03454 040506.
Now it’s getting colder, it’s time to think about stocking up the wood pile!

Keeping Abreast: Portrait Exhibition The charity Keeping Abreast is celebrating its 10th Anniversary with an exhibition of portraits called ‘Femininity Comes from Within’.
Fifty portraits of women who have had breast cancer surgery and reconstruction will be exhibited in the Music Room of The Assembly House, Theatre Street Norwich, to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the Charity, from Sunday 29 October to Tuesday 31 October. October is also Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The Keeping Abreast Portrait Exhibition, ‘Femininity Comes from Within’ by photographer, Julia Holland, has previously been on a National Tour during 2015, including a week-long showing at the House of Commons. ‘Femininity Comes from Within’ brings together portraits of women aged between 30 and 70, some of whom have been photographed before reconstructive breast surgery and some after. The participants have either had breast cancer or preventative mastectomies.
Alongside each portrait are the women’s own words about their experiences and feelings, demonstrating the femininity, strength and courage in adversity in each individual case. The stories are a powerful reflection on the women’s journeys through cancer and reconstruction. Many of their accounts convey the heartfelt gratitude they feel towards Keeping Abreast for the support they have received.

St Andrew's Ladies Association
At our September meeting we were pleased to welcome Penny Bevan- Jones who is so well known and admired in Sheringham for all the work she does to help folk of all ages to keep mobile. We listened to her interesting talk describing how she has turned her own ill health and family tragedy of losing her daughter, to help others to achieve the best mobility for life. We felt very humbled by this lovely lady who continues to inspire those less fortunate, still running fitness classes and groups for carers with dementia etc, both at Splash and at the Morley Club. We were expecting to sit down and listen to Penny but she had other ideas and we were soon up on our feet doing stretching exercises making it all fun! Thank you Penny for all your devotion and for all you do in Sheringham.

It’s a Dibley Christmas in Norfolk!
Local actor Laura Williamson, who lives in Norwich, is reprising her role of Geraldine Grainger in The Vicar of Dibley Christmas at the Sheringham Little Theatre and then at St. Georges Theatre in Great Yarmouth during November.
challenging when she finds out that his opponent is Alice.
Can she succeed with any of these challenges before the Yuletide season is upon them?
Laura and almost all of the original cast, from the first Vicar of Dibley production, are continuing the story of the Village of Dibley in this hilarious show.
Will the village nativity be the final straw?
All will be revealed in The Vicar of Dibley Christmas at Sheringham Little Theatre from 15 to 18 November at 7.30pm, matinee 2.30pm on Saturday 18 November. Tickets ÂŁ12 from the box office. 01263 822347
St. Georges Theatre plan to start up their own amateur group, based at the theatre, and it is hoped that this performance will inspire would-be actors and back stage crew to join this new and exciting project.

The village of Dibley is still the quirky, chaotic place that we all know and love, and Christmas is on its way. But first, Geraldine has much to do.
Notice of Cancellation
Unfortunately, due to a lack of response from those Choirs invited, Sheringham and Cromer Lions Club has had to cancel the Festival of Choirs which was to be held in Sheringham on Saturday 11 November.
She has some news to break that will leave David Horton in shock! She has to find a way to celebrate the anniversary of the Churches saint, which results in a stunning revelation from one of the Dibley Parish Councillors, and she has to find a way to break the twenty-seven-year winning run of David Horton in the village quiz. A task made more

Daphne was introduced to Richard following his application to become a volunteer befriender with Voluntary Norfolk’s ‘North Norfolk Health Volunteers Service’. He applied as he wanted to have that connection with an older person again after having such a close relationship with his grandparents who he has sadly lost. He also wanted to ‘give something back’ and find a work/life balance.
Daphne was referred to the service following recommendation from her community physiotherapist to have support to go out for short walks to aid healing of a leg condition. She doesn’t live too far from the beach at Bacton and used to enjoy taking walks along the water’s edge but she explained that it’s quite a busy road and she felt she needed support to do able to this, as she lives alone.
Following their introduction, Daphne joyfully reports that they have become “great pals” and that Richard is “lovely”.
He visits on a weekly basis and they have thoroughly enjoying each other’s company and have do various things such go out on short trips out, Richard has taken Daphne out for lunch but has also cooked for himself. They are even planning a trip to Southwold!
During each visit there is a mutual respect and a great deal of chatting about all sorts of topics, Richard describes his visits as giving him a “different dimension to my working week and it’s nice to give something back”. They both agree that they equally get something out of the befriending partnership and that it shouldn’t just be one sided.
Daphne is in no doubt as to the difference Richard’s visits have made in her life, “he’s lovely – I don’t know what I’d do without him. And even when he’s not here, it’s a great comfort to think about what we’ve said and done, and to know that he’s not far away and he cares about me. It makes me feel a lot less lonely even when I’m on my own”.
‘Volunteering is always a two-way street’ says Natalie Hickman, the Voluntary Norfolk coordinator who introduced Richard to Daphne and supports the arrangement, ‘Daphne and Richard are a great example of how a befriending volunteer not only enhances the life of the person they’ve visiting, but can make a big difference to their own life too! Whilst there is a lot of loneliness across Norfolk and beyond, it doesn’t take a lot of time or effort to transform the situation - for both the volunteer and the person they visit’.
Voluntary Norfolk is keen to hear from anyone who would like to become a Health Volunteer.

If you are 18 years old or over, enjoy meeting and spending time with other people, and can put aside an hour or so a week to change a life and make a new friend, please contact Natalie Hickman on 01263 519454 or natalie.hickman@voluntarynorfolk.org.uk . Sheringham Independent 474

CROMER AND SHERINGHAM
PROBUS CLUB
On 3 October, after an excellent lunch, Cromer and Sheringham Probus Club was treated to an illustrated talk entitled ‘Wildlife Facts from around the World’, by Dr Kevin Elsby, FRPS. Photography has been a lifelong interest of his and this was shown in the impressive, professional quality of his photographs.
Beginning with the Arctic and working his way south, Kevin treated us to a feast of stunning photographs, accompanied with surprising facts about the wildlife shown.
For example, he explained how a polar bear's hairs are effectively tiny air-filled tubes, which thus provide insulation. He also explained how the Svalbard reindeer has adapted to the harsh winters and extremely cold air of that region, with air entering its nostrils at minus 30 degrees Celsius!
Your property in safe hands Relax and let Hayes + Storr Solicitors handle your property legal matters with the care and professionalism you deserve.
This photographic journey then took us south via Scotland, Norfolk, Africa, tropical Latin America and down to Antarctica. We learned about gannets, puffins (and how these can hold so many fish in their beaks), avocets, swallows, humming birds, ostriches, alligators, albatrosses and many other creatures.
This lecture was much appreciated and Kevin was thanked by the Chairman, Jack Broughton.
Our next meeting at The Links Hotel, West Runton, will be on Tuesday 7 November when Lisa Little, of the Sheringham Museum, who will speak on ‘Museum Experiences’.
If you are a retired or nearly retired professional or businessman and would like to join us at one of our future meetings you will be warmly welcomed. Please contact our lunch secretary Dave Vickery on 01263 824306 or visit our website www.candsprobus.club for more information.

Christmas at Emms Stems
After 19 years of being a Florist I'm very proud to have opened my own Flower Shop nearly 8 years ago!
Emms Stems Florist has grown more and more each year. It was always a risk opening a business in a rural location but I'm pleased to say it has been a huge success. I pride myself on making beautiful arrangements and Bouquets.
Having created hundreds of beautiful Weddings with some lovely couples is always something I love to do. Equally it's a privilege to be asked to arrange Tribute Flowers for Funerals, as for me personally it's something close to my heart as this was the reason I began Floristry. Each year we hold a special Christmas Event for people to come and see the beautiful arrangements, Wreaths, Fresh Christmas Trees, Christmas Gift Ideas and Festive Decorations. This year we decided to change the day and time of the Event to a Saturday 11th November from 12pm till 5pm.
We look forward to welcoming you all to our truly lovely Christmas Festive Event. Sheringham Independent 474

Alec W Humphrey - TRIBUTE
Many people in Sheringham knew Alec Humphrey - from his earlier newspaper delivery days to later life sitting often on various benches around the town. Alec died suddenly at home in Horseshoe Cottage, Beeston Road on 9 April, aged 87 years, and sadly the infectious humour he spread wherever he went has been lost too.
Alec was born at West Beckham and moved around as a child - a spell in Cley with his grandmother and a period in Cromer, where in Jetty Street, his neighbour was the famous lifeboatman, Henry Blogg.
Indeed Alec used to tell the story of how, when aged 8 or 9, he would on occasions be asked to carry the great man’s sea boots to the lifeboat station, if Henry was down on the beach and the lifeboat was to be launched.
Alec came to Sheringham prior to the outbreak of the Second World War and occupied his time pumping the organ bellows at Beeston
Regis Church and ‘digging for victory’.
His schooling was limited but he mastered the basics and started work the very next day after leaving, delivering papers around Sheringham, first for Rounce and Wortley, then B A Watts. At B A Watts his round consisted of Sheringham, Upper Sheringham and Beeston Regis and he served the community in this respect for the whole of his working life, two rounds a day, six days a week in all weathers. He reckoned he had cycled enough miles to go to the moon and back.
Alec lived alone surrounded by his ‘collections’ – model cars, comics, stamps, cigarette and tea cards plus other ephemera. These collections were a continuous source of interest and, following his death. They were auctioned as he had wished, with the proceeds to be divided between BREAK, RNLI and the RSPB.
Alec was also interested in music and had the rare talent of being able to ‘play by ear’ and he would often play favourite tunes on the

harmonica and concertina, as well as listening to records and the radio. He also loved gardening and going out on coach trips – local mystery tours and visits to parks and gardens were a favourite Sunday pastime. On these trips, and with his many walks over the local commons and cliffs, Alec would record butterfly sightings and had contributed thousands of records over 30 years to various Butterfly Atlas projects.
After his funeral ceremony at Cromer crematorium, some of the friends gathered saying that he should have a small memorial plaque on his favourite bench at the top of Beeston Road.
Thanks to the kind permission of Sheringham Town Council, a memorial plaque was placed on the bench on 9 October. For those of us lucky enough to have known Alec this will be a small but fitting tribute to an eternally optimistic and contented soul.

It has been and gone but it was a very successful Forties weekend. Despite a really worrying forecast, the rain did not arrive, apart from a small shower early in the morning. So Moss and Robina's tombola, helped by the weather and people’s generous donated items, not to mention happy punters, raised the magnificent sum of £326.
A new event, organised by David and Audrey Williams, was singing wartime songs. Originally planned to take place in the town, the weather forecast made a move under cover much more desirable. Fortunately, Tesco kindly allowed the musicians, singers and collectors to be in the 16
foyer. Helped by a small choir from North Walsham, who helped with the singing and also donated £30, the wonderful sum of £300 was raised. So a big thank you to David and Audrey, collectors, musicians and singers and Tesco for their help.
Also, many thanks to all who gave prizes for the tombola, to Diana and David North for the loan of their table and David for making his very popular fudge, and of course to all those who bought tickets
Money is raised for children in Norfolk and Suffolk who have cerebral palsy. Applications for help are welcome. Contacts are Moss Taylor 01263823637 or moss.taylor@ btinternet.com or Robina Churchyard 01263 823588 or reacgenet@btinternet.com. Sheringham Independent 474

Falling Branches
These are sensible, practical questions to ask. I am not for a moment suggesting that we are all in imminent danger of annihilation by hordes of thoughtless trees bent on our destruction.
By Beckie Grimmer from Norfolk Landscape Gardeners
Our green and pleasant land is adorned with trees.
They shelter us from the heat of the sun, they shelter us from the rain. We gaze at their beauty and wonder at the diversity of creatures which they support.
As Martin Luther rightly said; “For in the true nature of things, if we rightly consider, every green tree is far more glorious than if it were made of gold and silver.”
We do, at least we should, know how valuable our trees are to all of us and to all life around us.
Yet, amongst this cavalcade of praise, must be inserted a word of caution and warning. We live on a tempestuous planet. A planet liable to storms, winds and weather which we, with all our technology, can neither predict nor control.
01692 405301
I simply suggest that for your peace of mind, you simply consider what is growing in the garden and ask yourself a simple question.
Even a small branch can cause significant damage to a home, a car or to you!
A large branch or a falling tree can be catastrophic or potentially fatal.
We need to think seriously about the trees we have in our gardens and open spaces and consider their position, their size, their species and their exposure.
Trees and wind are sometimes unhappy bedfellows. Despite their benevolence, trees have not evolved to live in concert with human ND ME M CO RE
beings, or to have compassion for our property, our health or our lives. The wind blows, the branches fall, and we suffer.
Stand in your garden today, do it right now when you finish reading, look at the height of your garden trees. Where will they strike if they fall?
What will happen if that overhanging branch should break away?
“Am I confident that the trees in my garden have no potential to cause damage or harm?”
If the answer is no, then, for a small fee, a qualified tree surveyor such as ourselves, can visit, have a look and make any recommendations for work that are deemed necessary. We are not out to “rip people off” and if we genuinely feel that there is no work required, then that will be our response. Our aim is to help you to enjoy your outside space, without worry, fear or anxiety about the “what if” scenarios.

On Saturday 2 December at 7.30pm, North Norfolk Chorale will give a concert at St Michael’s Church, Aylsham.
Napoleonic wars, and Austria faced a real risk of invasion by the Napoleonic army. The urgent, foreboding opening chords of the new work seem to reflect the national mood, and it is hardly surprising that Haydn called his work ‘Missa in Angustiis’ – ‘Mass for Troubled Times’.
Concert pays homage to Austrian master composer and Norfolk naval hero The feature work will be Joseph Haydn’s “Nelson Mass.
The programme opens with Haydn’s stirring motet ‘Insanae et Vanae Curae’, and will be rounded out by selected instrumental works. Haydn composed the work that today we call the ‘Nelson Mass’ in 1798, in circumstances that still seem familiar – uncertainty in Europe. But, unlike today’s merely political uncertainties around Brexit and the role of the European Union, in Haydn’s time the threat was to Austria’s very existence. This was the height of the

But even as the piece was premiered, Napoleon’s ambitions received a major setback when his fleet was defeated in the Battle of the Nile by the Royal Navy, under Vice Admiral Horatio Nelson. This put paid to the risk of an Austrian invasion, and the Norfolk-born naval commander rapidly became a cult figure in Vienna. Haydn’s new work has been popularly known as the ‘Nelson Mass’ ever since. The Chorale’s striking publicity for the concert will reflect this naval theme.

Jonathan Dodd, the Musical Director of North Norfolk Chorale, said “singing in Aylsham is a new departure for the North Norfolk Chorale and we encourage people to come and hear the choir and our very talented orchestra. The ‘Nelson Mass’ is one of Haydn’s greatest individual compositions, and we are looking forward to giving an authentic performance, with forces very similar to those which the composer originally had at his disposal.

North Norfolk District Council to sponsor two Moongazer Hares as part of the GoGoHares charity project
Statement concerning the proceeds of a street collection
Two Moongazer Hares will bring extra visitors to North Norfolk.
Permit issued to : W Taylor Permitted area : Sheringham Beneficiary : Diabetes UK Date of collection : 7 October 2017 Amount collected : £245.91 Expenses incurred : None Signed : W Taylor
North Norfolk will play host to two of the Moongazer Hares planned for a countywide trail next year in aid of the charity Break. The decision to support the charity was made at a meeting of North Norfolk District Council’s cabinet.
Break is 50 in 2018. Following the successful GoGoGorillas in 2013 and GoGoDragons in 2015, the charity has devised a new sculpture trail for 2018. In addition to a Norwich trail of Hare sculptures called GoGoHares, Break is for the first time establishing a countywide ‘Moongazer Trail’. Sponsors are being sought for the event, which will start on 24 June 2018 and run until 8 September 2018. NNDC have agreed to sponsor two Hares and set aside £15,000 to cover the project. The Council’s Economic Growth Team will also help promote the initiative in order to encourage local businesses to sponsor further Moongazer Hares across the District.
It is believed the most suitable locations for the NNDC Moongazer Hares are likely to be Holt Country Park and Bacton Woods.
Cllr Nigel Dixon, NNDC Cabinet Member for Economic Development and Tourism, said “The advantages are multiple – generating funds for a charity which has long and historic links with North Norfolk, attracting large numbers of visitors to the locations where the hares are sited and benefitting local businesses. We will now apply to sponsor the two Moongazer Hares as a Council and, if successful, agree the terms of sponsorship and acquisition, artwork and location.”
Cllr Maggie Prior, NNDC Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture, said “This is an incredibly exciting project for the whole county from a cultural point of view, appealing to families and people of all ages. We would love to see a hotspot of several hares created in North Norfolk, with ‘our’ two being just part of a greater number in the district.”
The trails will start on 24 June 2018 and run until 8 September 2018 and there will be an app for each trail and a map available to download. There will be a reward for completing the entire trail – each plinth will have a 4-digit code to collect.
All of the city trail hares will have their ears pointing upwards, whereas all of the county trail hares will be looking up to the sky – or gazing up at the moon – with their ears flat against their backs.

North Norfolk Railway :
Last 2017 Signalling Experience Day The North Norfolk Railway held the last of their 2017 Signalling Experience days on 15 September.
Offered on seven dates throughout the year, each day offered two participants the opportunity to try their hand at signalling for real (supervised by a signalling inspector) in the delightful setting of Holt signal box. A visit to Weybourne or Sheringham signal box was also included in the day.
"The North Norfolk Railway received extremely positive feedback from all the participants and, as a result, is planning to run an expanded series of days in 2018", commented Andrew Munden, NNR's General Manager. "In addition, several of the participants have now volunteered to train as signalmen, and will be joining our next signalling training course starting in December".
The Signalling Experience days join the ever-popular Steam Driving days complemented now by Diesel Experiences giving the opportunity to fulfil many dreams. All these experiences are bookable direct with the North Norfolk Railway.
For further details of the days, or to speak to someone about what is involved in volunteering as a signalman on the NNR, please contact the General office on 01263 820800 e mail enquiries@nnrailway.co.uk or visit www.nnrailway.co.uk
