Freemasons Gift to Foodbank
Sheringham Councillor Memorialised at The Reef
North Walsham Freemasons from the 'Lodge of Unanimity No102' made a New Year visit to the 'North Norfolk Food Bank' distribution centre in Cromer.
Continued from front cover...
The Brian Hannah Community Rooms were opened by his wife, Bev, and his grandchildren on Sunday, who were also given a tour of the facility and use of the gym or pool.
Cllr. Hannah was a District Councillor from 1997 until 2019, before his passing in January 2020; he was a big proponent of developing a new leisure centre for Sheringham, and was involved in the project’s conception, nearly 10 years ago.
Leader of the Council, Sarah Bütikofer said: "I am delighted that the Council have been able to pay tribute to Brian in this way. He was a long serving Councillor who gave so much of himself to the local community he served, and it is very fitting that his memory can live on within the community he loved."
Ian Walker, Tim Morton and Brian Galasky.
The purpose of the visit was to present a donation from the Lodge of £750 to Tim Morton who is the Project Manager. Brian Galasky who is the current Master and Ian Walker who is Charity Steward of the lodge made the presentation and heard more details about the running of the foodbank from Tim Morton.
Portfolio Holder for Leisure, Wellbeing and Culture, Cllr. Virginia Gay said: “I've so looked forward to welcoming Brian's family to The Reef. It has been such a pleasure. Brian was determined to make sure that North Norfolk got a leisure centre to be proud of. I think that he would have been pleased to see so many happy children enjoying the pools on Sunday afternoon. I do hope so.”
After starting in 2012 the demand has steadily grown and the organisation now covers a 200 square mile area of North Norfolk, with satellite centres in Sheringham, Holt, Aylsham, North Walsham and Stalham.
Ian Walker said "We were very impressed with the scale and operation of the Centre. We are pleased to start 2022 with this donation to a worthwhile local Charity.
The community rooms will be multi-functional, with such uses including health referral appointments, physio, sports massages, meetings and children’s parties

Holt & District Dementia Support -
A Note from the editor
Poppy Café is expanding!
February is the transition between winter and spring, or so they say. The first snowdrops are here, so that’s hopeful. I have a nagging feeling the weather has a bit more in store for us before we are clear of winter. But let’s be positive, restrictions are lifting, and people are getting together again. Lots of groups and events are coming back – the new normal starting to take shape. In that vein, I notice a cautious return of some of our annual events this year. Holt Festival is in the pipeline, Sheringham Viking Festival is due to happen in April this year, we await news about the town carnivals and 40s weekend.
If you listened to the news recently you would have heard of the predicted increase in the number of people living with dementia over coming years. In Holt, we are already seeing that increase, with many more families approaching our charity for support. Having successfully maintained our services throughout the pandemic, we are currently looking to increase our provision in order to meet this rising tide of need. Since the beginning of January, we now offer weekly Poppy Café sessions on Monday mornings as well as our well-established Tuesday Café.
Another traditional event this month, Valentine’s Day, is a chance to treat your loved one and show how much you care. No matter if it’s a movie and take-away at home or a posh meal out, cup of tea in bed or popping the question, make someone feel special.
Clearly as our services expand our need for volunteers also increases. If you enjoy convivial conversation, fun activities, coffee and cake, plus the satisfaction of giving someone living with dementia the opportunity to enjoy a pleasant social outing, perhaps you’d consider volunteering. No experience is necessary, just a willingness to join in and extend the hand of friendship to families in need.
Whatever you are up to, enjoy your February magazine.
Keep safe and well. Jo – Editor.
Here are the deadline dates and publishing dates for the next 3 magazines. Month Copy deadline Publishing date March Tuesday 1st March Friday 11th March April Tuesday 29th March Friday 8th April May Tuesday 3rd May Friday 13th May

Should you or a family member be living with dementia, H&DDS is ready to welcome you. Different Generations Gain Enjoyment as they learn from each other
One of the many consequences of the pandemic has been the increased isolation of older people, not just from the community but also from family members.
Over the past two weeks, they have enjoyed the activities of flower arranging, painting, tabletop games and Bingo with clients and they are gaining in confidence in speaking to the older people and leading activities. This is an on-going project which we hope will benefit everyone involved – older people will have an increased sense of self-worth and feeling valued and will develop friendships with younger people and younger people will have a positive experience from sharing time and experiences with older people as well as the fun, enjoyment and personal reward of being part of this project.
This is a two-way issue as grandchildren have had limited contact with grandparents and vice versa, and both have missed the benefits: the life experience of the elderly for the young, and new ways of doing things for those who are older. At Age Concern North Norfolk we have recently started a series of new projects involving pupils from Gresham’s School in Holt, building on the links we have made previously.
Initially, six young people and their teachers came to the centre and helped to improve the premises by painting the outside fences and seating; then they completed a Dementia Awareness session before meeting the clients in the centre.
Are you energetic? Innovative? Forward looking? If this is you read on ...
Innovative Norfolk Charity Age Concern North Norfolk (ACNN) supporting older people to live enhanced lives in their own homes, is looking for 2 energetic TRUSTEES to initially serve for one year following a 3 month probationary period. Would you like to gain experience of what is involved in overseeing and running a small charity? Give something back to your community? Enhance your job prospects?
We are interested in hearing from you if you are a recent graduate with interest in this field, or if you are later on in your career, wanting a change or a challenge or both, and willing to volunteer in a small, friendly, private charity. You will gain valuable experience and make an untold difference in the lives of vulnerable people. Retirees with energy and time to spare are also welcome.
If this sounds interesting to you, please contact Alison on 01263 821188 or alisonc@ageconcernnorthnorfolk.co.uk to ask for an application form and for any further information. Two referees who have known you for more than 3 years are needed. Commitment is 6-8 hours a month, which includes a 2 hour trustee meeting 10 times a year. The team of trustees will support you in any training required. Nominal £30 admin fee refundable at end of successful probationary period. Interviews will be held at the end of February 2022.

In the Loop with Sheringham Town Council
February marks the start of the 2022 Sheringham Community Awards
Awarded by the Town Council, they recognise those who volunteer their time to make improvements to the environment or the lives of people in the town.
Each year, it is our pleasure to recognise people of all ages, who are making a real difference. This year, the awards scheme is called ‘Sheringham Thank Yous’.
We want to say thank you and publicly acknowledge those who have made a difference during 2021. We welcome nominations for children, young people and adults and really hope that people will take this opportunity to express their gratitude.
Please email or phone the Town Council offices if you would like a simple nomination form on 01263 822213 or info@sheringhamtowncouncil.gov.uk In addition to these awards, we are also planning a ‘community thank you’ project. From the middle of February, noticeboards will be up at the Community Centre, where people can write short postcards of thanks to anyone who lives or works in Sheringham. It could be
a teacher, a volunteer, a neighbour, a shop keeper, or anyone else they feel they’d like to thank. Our aim is to get 100 messages of thanks, which reflect the wonderful community in which we live.
If you are part of a community organisation that would like to be involved in writing postcards, then please email hazel.beazley@sheringhamtown council.gov.uk and we will get you some coloured postcards for your messages.
We will also have a pop-up stall in town on the 26th of February so come and see us and get involved. Do look out for updates in local media, we really hope that people will enjoy the chance to express their gratitude and spread some joy.
In 2022, Councillor Surgeries will be held at Sheringham Community Centre every two months to accord with demand. We hope that you will come along and talk to your Councillors about any concerns you have about the town or just pop in and meet us for a chat. Sheringham District and County

“It’s a recurrent misconception that a larger firm is better.”
I am Clare Mayell and I own Silver and Ward Solicitors in Sheringham. I am an extremely competent and experienced solicitor. I appreciate that any time of the year can be a difffficult time for many people to resolve legal issues of worry and concern, for example, making a will or Lasting Power of Attorney, and especially during this very uncertain time. As I have worked for 2 larger local firms I know what clients want and expect. My charges are significantly less than other solicitors in North Norrffolk or Norrw wich and I provide 24 years of expertise and exceptional service. I pride myself in being one of the only solicitors who offers a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, so clients can come in and obtain some initial advice and discuss costs and then make an informed decision. At a larger firm you just pay more. I can also offer appointments via Zoom, telephone or Skype and through the website www.silverandward.co.uk.. When a client rings or walks through the door they invariably get to speak to me as this personal and direct approach is important to my clients and I. I ensure complete confidentiality is an absolute priority. I advise new clients to “shop around” as I know that my charges are significantly less than other solicitors but I can offe fer the same expertise, if not better. I have and can act for clients across Norrffolk and the Country as we now have the use of Skype, emails etc. so it enables me to act for clients further afield. The reason that clients, near and far, instruct Silver and Ward is because of my expertise, exceptional service and competitive costs. Of course we have all necessary Covid measures in place in the office.
“I would say to any potential client with a legal issue or worry to come and meet me face to face for a FREE FIRST APPOINTMENT, as you have nothing to lose but all to gain. Home visits can be arranged at no extra cost.

Backgammon
The 2022 Winter Open at Gresham Village Hall drew 12 players who contested a 4-round Swiss, matches to 4 points (without cubes, in fairness to 4 newcomers innocent of them). Ian De’Ath (Hichstead) and John Ingamells (Cromer), the only players to have won all 3 matches to that point, were paired in effectively a knock-out final, a pulsating affair when Ian overtook John with a last-ditch gammon (2 points) to claim first prize and the trophy on offer.
During lockdown, our speaker Jon Hooton kindly gave the SHG two video presentations covering the rise of the Glaven Ports - Blakeney, Cley, Salthouse and Wiveton. He now returns in person on March 2nd to discuss and illustrate the decline of the ports, beginning soon after achieving Head Port status in 1786, and which was accelerated by the silting of the ports and the coming of the railways.
Third prize went to Arthur Sinacola (Fakenham), who joined John on 3 won matches, and 4th prize to Jane Harris-Hall (North Walsham) with highest total of opponents’ scores. Another newcomer, Jill, had only been playing for 3 weeks but still won one match against a stalwart who shall be nameless.
Sheringham Museum 7.00 for 7.30. Please use the Schools' Entrance on Lifeboat Plain
‘Encompass’- NEW social group
The next meeting will be on Sunday February 20, 9.45 for 10am start, same venue. Matches to 3 points with cubes this time, and hopefully the newcomers will have had time to get used to them.

Following the rise of Aretha Franklin’s life from a young child singing in her father’s church to her international super stardom, ‘RESPECT’ is the remarkable true story of the music icon’s journey to find her voice and become The Queen of Soul. Wednesday 2nd March – 7.00pm: Based on the incredible true story of a businessman turned spy “THE COURIER” 2021 (12) starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Rachel Brosnahan, Jessie Buckley, Merab Ninidze and Angus Wright. Well-acted with all characters very well portrayed.

But when her flair for fashion catches the eye of the legendary designer Baroness von Hellman (Emma Thompson), Estella rises to become the raucous, revenge-bent “Cruella.” Review: Great movie for all ages! Recommended.

WEA Wells Branch - Dial H for Hitchcock!
Worstead Festival 2022
The people of Worstead are once again planning to welcome thousands of people to its village festival on the weekend of July 30th & 31st this year.
Following on from our 'Stage to Screen' day school last November, WEA Wells branch will be running another film-themed day course in Wells Maltings on Saturday 5th March.
The chair of the trustees, Jane Bond says, “We’re thrilled to be staging our summer party again after two years when we haven’t been able to put it on.”
Our tutor this time will be Nigel Herwin and his subject 'Alfred Hitchcock Master of Suspense'. Hitchcock is arguably one of the greatest directors in the history of cinema. Even today his ability to manipulate cinema audiences remains undiminished and his themes of murder, guilt and obsession still fascinate. Using film clips this day school will explore Hitchcock’s style, set pieces and preoccupations, and demonstrate that he truly does deserve the title ‘Master of Suspense’.
“I’m looking forward to the displays, competitions, arts and crafts, music, food and drink. It’s about meeting friends, entertaining the kids and having some fun.” The first Worstead Festival was in 1966 to raise money to stop the tower at the 14th century St Mary’s church from falling down. Since then it’s raised thousands of pounds for good causes in the village and beyond.
The course will be held in the main auditorium of Wells Maltings, where we will be able to use the building's state of the art projection and sound systems. There will be plenty of space for attendees to socially distance and the auditorium has a highly efficient 'outside air' ventilation system. It is as Covid secure as any public building can be.
Pick up some cooking tips from some of the county’s top chefs in the kitchen demonstrations. There’ll be horses, tractors, cattle, dogs, military vehicles, a mini railway and much more. It’s all being held in the idyllic setting in fields behind the church. Car parking is close-by and free.
Anyone who wants to take the opportunity to set up a stall for the weekend is invited to go to the new festival website worsteadfestival.org/trade-stalls download the application form, fill it in and email it to stalls@worsteadfestival.org
The day school will be available to book from mid-February. It will cost £18 and run from 9.45am until 4.00pm with a one-hour break for lunch. You can enrol online by going to www.wea.org.uk/eastern and entering ‘Wells-next-the-Sea’ in the ‘town/postcode’ box at the top of the page. This will take you to the Wells courses. Click on the ‘view details’ button next to 'Alfred Hitchcock - Master of Suspense' and then click the ‘Enrol online’ link.
Help is needed. The organising committee will be meeting on Thursday 3rd February in the village hall at 7-30pm.
Alternatively, you can enrol by phoning 0300 303 3464. For help, advice or further details please contact Annie Whitelaw on 07856 792186 or email anniewhitelaw53@icloud.com. And please remember that these courses are open to everyone, you don’t have to be a member of WEA or one of our regulars, and anyone claiming income related benefits can attend for free.
The Worstead Festival was first held in 1966 to raise money to save its outstandingly beautiful and historically significant church. It has grown into a weekend of family entertainment. It celebrates rural life, farming, crafts, produce and the heritage of Worstead and North Norfolk.

Can I give up or amend my Inheritance after someone has died? by Kieran Athow, Solicitor, Hayes + Storr Solicitors
Whilst the specific terms of any will are up to the individual who makes it, after they have died there may be circumstances in which a beneficiary does not wish to receive their inheritance or wishes to pass all or part of it to somebody else. Beneficiaries are not obligated to accept their inheritance, whether received under the terms of a will or under the rules of Intestacy.
Variation
A beneficiary could choose to ‘vary’ all or part of their interest in an estate to another individual(s). This allows the ‘original’ beneficiary to choose the ultimate recipient of their ‘unwanted’ inheritance.
For example, an estate may have been distributed equally between the deceased’s two children, however, following the death, it may be the case that one child is financially independent and they may be content to forgo their own share in the estate (or part of it) to benefit their child(ren). There may be good tax planning reasons to adopt this approach.
Where the deceased did not leave a valid will, then their estate would be distributed in accordance with the Intestacy rules, which
provide a hierarchy of relatives entitled to inherit from the estate. However, these rules do not make provision for unmarried partners (irrespective of the duration of the relationship) and, therefore, those relatives entitled to benefit may wish to vary the distribution of the estate to provide for the deceased’s partner to benefit to some degree.
Disclaimer
Alternatively, the beneficiary could ‘disclaim’ their inheritance, however, they must typically disclaim any inheritance in its entirety (unless the will provides otherwise).
For example, if a beneficiary receives a cash gift (legacy) of £10,000 and also a share in the residuary estate under a Will, they may be in a position to elect to disclaim the cash gift, whilst taking the share in the residue.
Typically, the disclaimed asset(s) would be distributed as though the original beneficiary had died before the deceased and the original beneficiary would have limited control as to the ultimate recipient. How to vary or disclaim your Inheritance To vary or disclaim your inheritance, a beneficiary must sign a Deed of
Variation/Disclaimer. Further, the variation/disclaimer must be signed within two years of the deceased’s death to have retrospective effect for Inheritance Tax and/or Capital Gains Tax purposes.
How can we help?
Giving up or varying an inheritance will have consequences for you and for the deceased’s estate. You should seek legal advice before disclaiming or varying your entitlement to benefit to ensure that this is carried through correctly. Our private client team members can advise on disclaiming or varying an entitlement to benefit under an estate and would assist in the preparation of all relevant documentation.

Cllr. Bütikofer to Resign as Leader of the Council At a recent Cabinet meeting, Cllr Sarah Bütikofer advised that she intends to resign as Leader of the District Council for personal reasons and will step down as soon as a new leader can be elected.
As has previously been reported, Cllr Bütikofer suffered two close family bereavements in the last year and has also now confirmed that her husband and fellow North Norfolk District Councillor Pierre Bütikofer is battling a serious medical condition.
In a statement, Cllr Bütikofer commented:

“I am giving notice that it is my intention to resign as Leader of North Norfolk District Council as soon as a new leader can be elected by both my group and then Full Council. Until then I will remain in office and continue to complete my duties.
“It has been an immense honour and privilege to have led this council for the last three years and to have been the Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group here for the last five and a half.”
Steve Blatch, Chief Executive of North Norfolk District Council, commented:
"I would like to sincerely thank Cllr Bütikofer for the significant contribution she has made in leading the Council over the past three years. Councillor Bütikofer has in recent months had to balance dealing with extremely challenging family matters while working with partners, council officers and members in leading the Council through a year which has seen us all working very hard to contend with the impact of Covid in the District. “I know that the decision to stand down from
the Leader’s role hasn’t been easy, but things such as family and personal health and well-being are more important than any public role and on behalf of officer and member colleagues, we offer Sarah and Pierre our support, thoughts and best wishes in the weeks and months ahead.”
Cllr Bütikofer will continue to serve as Leader while the Liberal Democrat Group takes forward their internal Group processes to elect a new Group Leader. There will then be a vote at a future meeting of Full Council to confirm appointment of the new Leader of the Council. At this time, it is expected that this meeting will be at a date in early February.
Stroke Support Group Plans for 2022
Sheringham Stroke Support Group, covering most of North Norfolk from Wells to Waxham and the hinterland from Fakenham to Stalham starts meeting again at the beginning of March.
We are an affiliated member of the Stroke Association which is the only UK Charity concerned with helping everyone affected by stroke. Their website is stroke.org.uk They supply free help books on almost every subject concerned with stroke and work closely with local groups.

We are an independent self-financing group who are calling all stroke survivors and their carers in North Norfolk who would enjoy a social afternoon twice a month. We meet at 2.15pm for a 2.30pm start and finish at approx. 3.45pm at St Andrews Methodist Church Hall in Sheringham on the Cromer Road next to Tesco NR26 8SA.
Our last meeting of the September to December 2021 term was spent together having a festive Christmas lunch at the Cliftonville Hotel.
We restart our meetings on March 2nd with a social afternoon and then continue fortnightly until June 2022. New & current members & carers will receive a warm welcome and enjoy a full programme which includes speakers, social afternoons, music, poetry, slide shows etc and in the warmer weather we usually go out for afternoon tea. After the meeting we have a cuppa, chat & a fun raffle encouraging members to bring a small item, then each member gets a prize to take home.
Due to Covid19 it is recommended to wear a mask, if possible, for peace of mind & the chairs are spaced apart in the hall which has good access. There is a large car park & disabled facilities are available for wheelchair users inside the building.
There is a nominal charge for each term of £10 & carers are free.

Landlord of The Crown Retires
I arrived in Sheringham in 1974, first as landlord of The Windham Arms, and since 1977 as the Landlord here at The Crown. I was immediately made to feel at home. What could be better than living in a thriving seaside town on the wonderful North Norfolk coast.
However, after nearly 50 years in the pub trade, the time has come to pull my final pint. I’ve seen many changes over the years and have adapted accordingly. In the early days pubs had to close in the afternoon. Now with licensing laws relaxed food is available all day and customers take advantage of this. When we had to close at 11pm it was often difficult to get customers to leave, but people’s habits have changed. Unless there is entertainment most country pubs are empty before 11pm.
Live music has always been very popular. For well over 30 years bands performed here on a Wednesday night. Being midweek, popular bands such as Lee Vasey, Pure Passion, Agent Orange, Floating Greyhounds and countless more were available to play as most of their bookings were for weekends. I have had so many customers over the years tell me how they have looked forward to Wednesday gigs, many of them travelling from far and wide to see their favourite bands.
In recent years, live music has been more concentrated on the summer months, performing on our outside stage overlooking the sea. Various bands have entertained during summer afternoons, with customers enjoying a meal and drinks with their families whilst taking in the sun and sea views.
Sheringham has so many dedicated volunteers who help promote our town and make it the
popular destination it has become. From February’s Viking weekend to the Crab and Lobster festival, Potty Morris dancing weekend in July to the Sheringham Carnival in August which has always provided first class entertainment throughout the town – Sheringham always has something going on!
September is when we hold our 40s weekend which has become huge. We are invaded by thousands in 40s themed outfits, soldiers, land girls, evacuees, spivs and many more. A wonderful experience with entertainment provided.
Due to the generosity of my customers money is raised each year for charities. We first brought walkie talkie phones for the lifeboats, then supplied four guide dogs for the blind, funds for Air Ambulance, E.A.C.H, Cancer Research and many more. At present we raised
stories to tell and had many fascinating conversations. I’ve seen generations of families come through the door and made a great many friends along the way.
I have also employed hundreds of fantastic, loyal, dedicated people. My staff have been the backbone of the business and without their hard work I would not be where I am today – Thank you to you all.
around £3000 per year for charities.
I would also like to take this moment to sincerely thank my wife, Debbie for all her constructive guidance and help over the years and help operating our business. Thank you all for your loyalty and support over so many years.

North Walsham and District Branch of Cats Protection
Since our last article Edna, an older cat who came in as a stray and was in very poor condition, has left for her new home. We have also re-homed the two lovely cats Flokey and Norbet, who joined us via Westover Vets. Kittens, Kia, Nakita, Marley, Hollie, Chloe, Honey, Paddington, Pukki and Pudsey, have also left for their new homes, plus the two little kittens mentioned last time.
Marley and Koko, the special little kittens, have been adopted by Julie who was already caring for them. They are the first kittens we have ever seen with dwarfism (caused by a rare genetic defect) and it has been a big learning curve for us all. Fortunately, we were able to discuss the condition with another branch of Cats Protection who had their own little dwarf kitten in 2020.
The kittens came into care last May at 4 weeks old, with their litter mates, who were normal sized. Their owner had contacted Stephanie because he could not look after the kittens as their mother had disappeared. Because they were so much smaller than their siblings, we thought at first that they were from another litter as they were not exhibiting normal behaviour for 4-week-old kittens. However, after a visit to the vets with a health problem for Koko, we were advised they were indeed dwarfs. Their development continued to lag behind that of their littermates who were both rehomed after receiving their first vaccination. Because they have such very short legs, but normal sized bodies, they struggled to become mobile; hard to believe when you see how quickly they can move now. They have both had some serious health issues requiring visits to Westover and even an overnight stay for Koko in June as she needed to go on a drip and for Marley at the end of last year when he became constipated. As a consequence of the extra care they need, Julie had become so fond of them she could not bear to part with them, so they have now taken up permanent residence with her. Since their adoption, Koko has needed more treatment for constipation
and is now on medication for this.
We do not know what the future holds for these kittens, but we know that Julie is extra vigilant and is ensuring they have the very best life possible. Koko is the more active of the two and loves to play. Marble meanwhile has got one up on his sister as he has managed to climb and can usually be found curled up on the sofa when Julie returns from work. They are very gentle little kittens and also very cuddly.
If you are interested in receiving help to neuter your cat/kitten, please ring 07880 256948 (to see if you are eligible for a voucher). This number is for vouchers only and will not be able to help with any other enquiries. The number also applies for those wishing to take advantage of our special neutering campaign.
If you are looking for a cat or kitten (or have any other queries) please give Stephanie a call on 01692 535858. Please be aware that if you are interested in giving one of our cats a home you need to contact by phone rather than by the contact form on our website, www.northwalsham.cats.org.uk where a description and photograph of the cats can be seen. Stephanie does not use a computer for her cat work so there is a delay in responding to enquiries this way and as she deals with enquiries on a first come first serve policy, she may have already spoken to someone who is interested in giving the cat a home.

A Local Legend - One you won’t want to miss Like all young people she fell in love and her nights and days were full of dreams of love-filled tomorrows. A gentle heart filled with whole-hearted, innocent love is a tender and precious flower. So, it was with Bessy as she was called. It is a tender and touching tale and it is one that will appeal to men and women of all ages who love a good yarn.
Some of us know the story of a young lady whose life was blighted by a love affair back in the nineteenth century.
Now Geoffrey Dixon has brought the story of Old Bessy to life in this new book. The names have been changed out of respect for the original characters, but a thread of truth runs through its pages. It is based on a true story but one in which significant details have been lost in the mist of years. Knowing that the story is true lends it a poignancy and we will find ourselves accompanying Bessy as we turn the pages. Elizabeth Bray was the daughter of a farmer in the North Norfolk of the eighteen fifties. Like so many girls and boys of the time, life was spent in the small world of the village where there was little opportunity for development or adventure.
Its pages feature many villages and towns with which we are familiar and were truly known by Bessy. It is a story that grips the imagination, and it is one that anyone who reads it will find unforgettable. Although we read of Bessy’s days in a different age we share her feelings and they are emotions to which we are all, whether male or female, subject to at some time. And what happened to Bessy is maybe something that has happened to us. The emotions felt by people of a different age are felt by us as well, and that is why young and old will relish the story of Old Bessy. It is one of those stories that that tug at the heart strings and linger in the memory.
She was beautiful and spirited and the apple of her parents’ eyes.

Sheringham BeachLife Invites All to Family Fun Trail
Sheringham BeachLife will be holding a Fun Day outreach on the Friday of February half term, including a Family Trail around Sheringham, and all are welcome to join in.
There will be an on-line broadcast in the morning on the BeachLife YouTube channel, followed by the family treasure trail around the town during the afternoon, all on Friday February 18.
This follows the successful summer outreach last August, when young people logged on to on-line activities each morning, then joined up for outdoor family events later that day, which avoided indoor gathering.
Plans are still being developed for this new on-line broadcast, but it is likely to include BeachLife favourites such as the Beach Special with music and drama and a short talk following the “Journeys” theme from last August. The broadcast will premiere at 10.30am.
The Family Fun Trail will start at 2pm from the
BeachLife stand on Otterndorf Green and should last around an hour. Participants will follow the trail in their family groups looking for clues in the hope of winning a prize at the end of the day.
Sheringham BeachLife was formed in 2012 to reach out to children and young people with the good news of Jesus. The highlight of the year is the summer outreach, usually for four days in late August, with other one-day events throughout the year. The organising team comprises members from the town’s churches.
Peter Skivington, youth minister at Sheringham’s Lighthouse Community Church, who leads the organising team, said “It is great to have another opportunity to reach the town’s young people with the great news that Jesus loves them. We thought it wise to avoid a large indoor gathering this time, so we are combining another video broadcast with the outdoor trail in the afternoon. We hope the town’s youngsters will turn out in force to join in.”
Sheringham & District Society A long-standing Sheringham organisation is on the lookout for new volunteers.
The Sheringham & District Society was founded in 1979 and took on the opening of the historic Henry Ramey Upcher lifeboat shed to visitors in 1983. In the early 2000s the Society renovated former fishing sheds on West Cliff which provided further exhibition space and created the Peter Coke Shell Gallery. Both of these attractions now receive thousands of visitors annually and play an important part in attracting tourists to Sheringham and North Norfolk. Peter Strudwick, Chairman of the Sheringham and District Society said “Our society has played a very significant part in the life of the town for more than forty years. To enable it to continue, we are now appealing for volunteers to ensure it remains viable beyond 2022. As well as managing two important visitor destinations, the society continues to contribute to Town developments. Our volunteers monitor planning applications, publish tourist information, maintain the visitor venues and organise events for members and friends.

The BeachLife team intends to continue developing their on-line video capability as a means of outreach, even when in-person gatherings have returned to normal.
Tune into the BeachLife YouTube channel to watch previous videos, and to catch the new broadcast when it is released on Friday February 18.
To take part in the Family Fun Trail, simply turn up by 2pm at Otterndorf Green in Sheringham that afternoon. No need to book. Follow Sheringham BeachLife on their Facebook page.
“The society is a friendly group, run entirely by volunteers. Now, with retirements pending, our continued existence is definitely under threat. We need new committee members and volunteer stewards to welcome visitors to the lifeboat museum and shell gallery. Any help you can offer, ranging from a couple of hours a week in the summer to a committee role, would be most welcome. The easiest way of explaining more fully what is involved would be through speaking to me on Sheringham 823657. For those wishing to be volunteer stewards we will be holding an open event in March in preparation for the tourist season.” Further information can be found on our website www.sheringhamsociety.com

Horatio Nelson – One of Norfolk’s Finest By David Abbott
Horatio Nelson was born in Burnham Thorpe, Norfolk in 1758 and destined to become a national hero and one of the country’s greatest naval commanders. At Christmas his friends would get an orange or set of Johann Sebastian Bach’s Greatest Hits, while young Horatio received a gift box entitled “Ahoy There Junior Admiral’s Kit.”
Containing string with Chinese instructions on ropemaking, wooden sword, a pair of sew-on epaulettes and an eye patch, he was the envy of the playground. Mums and Dads waiting at the school gate would cast an approving eye at the young Horatio saying: “That boy, he be destined for big things.” And they weren’t wrong.
Not for Horatio crabbing or sitting on the beach with knotted handkerchief on his head. His ambitions and dreams lay in the wide blue yonder.
But naval life in those days was as an exacting task given that the ships were wind-driven. Calls to “hoist the mainbrace” were often followed by cries of “Hold yew hard boys”, take ‘em down again quick”.
Given how fast wind directions can change and storms blow up at sea there was always the fear that a 64-gun man o’ war could be turned by a sudden gust and find itself firing broadsides at its own fleet. (HMS Victory had 104 making it doubly dangerous).
Then there was communication using a system of hand-held flags. Cool dudes did it like The Village People. While waiting anxiously for the command to engage the enemy, naval captains would be perplexed to receive the message:” YMCA”. Perhaps that is why some ships preferred to hoist the flags on their masts?!
As 99 per cent of naval time was spent waiting around, you can bet signallers had occasions to use them for their own ends; “Please knit me more socks, Mum”, “Anyone seen my right leg? Reward offered.”
Anyway, I digress… Nelson decided early on his career lay on the open seas. At 14 he bought some heated underpants and enlisted in an expedition to the Arctic. He went on to join the Royal Navy, learning all the ropes, mastering sails, gunnery, naval warfare tactics and saluting with the palm of the hand facing downwards (unlike those landlubbers in the army).
Nelson’s rise in the navy began when, at only 20, he was given the captaincy of a Frigate. He tasted action in Nicaragua but was lucky to avoid yellow fever which wiped out much of his militia. He wasn’t so lucky in Corsica where a stray bullet took out his right eye.
The battle of St Vincent in 1797 was a turning point. His decisive actions led to a knighthood and promotion. But all was not plain sailing (excuse the pun). He lost an arm during an assault on Tenerife.
Cromer and Sheringham Probus Club
A series of engagements saw him enhance his reputation as a brave and inspirational leader and wily tactician, resulting in his promotion to Vice Admiral. Victory over the French in the battle of The Nile was rewarded with the title Lord Nelson. Along with all that glamour he also acquired a mistress, Emma Hamilton.
Nelson’s final hurrah came at Trafalgar in October 1805, when, he led his fleet in a successful engagement with the FrancoSpanish navy as it left port. Nelson was on deck aboard HMS Victory when he was felled by a sniper’s bullet. On his deathbed he turned to the ship’s captain and said:” Kiss me Hardy.” Hardy kissed him on the cheek. Are we sure? Well, three surviving eyewitnesses affirm it and said he kept repeating the request until unable to speak.
Did Nelson have a sense of humour? We will never know. But if he had, he would have been looking down from his column and having a laugh when on December 21, 1954, he found himself in the Goon Show.
In this episode of the BBC Radio comedy classic Nelson complained about plans to get rid of London smog. “When the weather is really foggy, you see, it is the only chance we statues have to move around and see the sights.” It took the Clean Air Act to nail Nelson to his column for ever.

Keeping your pet smiling!
We all know dental check ups are essential for our children and ourselves but what about our pets? Dental disease can affect all species and is regularly seen in cats and dogs over three years old.
Initially invisible plaque causes gum reddening (gingivitis) which progresses to mineralised brown tartar (calculus) that frequently requires dental scaling. Caught early gingivitis can be reversed, however, over time it progresses to periodontitis with tooth loss and infections of the tooth, gum and jaw bone, with a risk of infection spreading to other organs via the bloodstream.
Dental disease in cats poses particular challenges as they also suffer from chronic gingivostomatitis, a disease where inflammation spreads from the gums to the rest of the mouth. In this condition the body mounts an over-exaggerated immune response to tartar and plaque causing painful inflammation. Treatment is complex and may involve tooth removal, antibiotics and immunosuppression, and should be
discussed with your vet.
extent of disease and ideal treatment options.
Similarly, Feline Resorptive Lesions affect large numbers of cats. These lesions erode the area between the tooth crown (above gum) and root (below gum) causing teeth to fracture.
At Toll Barn we have a fully equipped dental suite including dental x-ray and our in-house vets have a particular interest in dentistry and are always happy to discuss treatment and prevention options for your pet.
Prevention is always better than cure and our team of qualified veterinary nurses are happy to provide our clients with free of charge dental appointments to show you how to provide the best dental care for your pet.
Advanced lesions can be detected by visual inspection, however, early lesions are very painful but only detected by specialised dental x-ray and therefore dental x-rays are always recommended.
When detected early dental disease can often be treated with brushing, however, as disease progresses treatment requires antibiotics, scale and polishing and even extractions. Not all dental treatments are the same and dental treatment should involve a thorough examination under general anaesthesia where every tooth is examined visually and with a special probe.
Dental X-rays should be performed to assess the extent of disease below the gum line in the root / socket area as this is invisible to the naked eye. These investigations determine the
If you are concerned about your pets dental health, or want to get your puppy or kitten started on the right track with oral health, or just want to discuss our specialised dental treatments including our state-of-the-art dental x-ray, please contact our team on 01692 407126.

Parkinson’s UK
In common with many people, the end of 2020 (and subsequently 2021) couldn’t come soon enough for people affected by Parkinson’s in North Norfolk. The pandemic has led to many leading isolated lives even if they have tried to stay in touch via social media and online meetings. And so, with the courage of triple vaccinations, combined with sensible precautions, we have ambitious plans for the re-launch of our support activities in North Norfolk which will be bigger and more imaginative than ever before. And we invite anyone, however affected by Parkinson’s to join us.
Our mission is to provide friendship, encourage healthy living and to deal directly with some of the common challenges presented by Parkinson’s. And we meet literally every Tuesday morning either in person or online (sometimes both).
The first Tuesday of the month will find us “chatting” online with an opportunity for anyone to join us for social interaction. For anyone struggling to get connected, we can
walk you through a simple zoom tutorial and even loan a free of charge tablet, thanks to the generosity of the Norwich Community Foundation.
On the second Tuesday of the month, we meet in person to hear a guest speaker talk about a subject of mutual interest. We have a really exciting line up of speakers this year – check out our North Norfolk Parkinson’s Facebook site to get the latest information.
It is very common for people with Parkinson’s to find their voice is affected, either losing vocal power, or by a tendency to slur their speech. On the third Tuesday of the month, we have a speech workshop “Talkin’ Norfolk” which is by invitation only and which offers
a safe environment in which to exercise ones vocal chords and share / learn ways of coping.
On the 4th Tuesday, we have “Walkin’ Norfolk”. Designed to be flexible to meet the differing needs of individuals, we seek to get everyone actively exercising. Starting after Easter, these walking groups will meet at destinations such as Sheringham Park, Blickling Hall and Hoveton Hall, rounding our walks off with a nice cuppa and cake!
If you’re interested in joining our support group in North Norfolk - we are centred around North Walsham and Aylsham and yet have regulars from all over North Norfolk and beyond – wherever you are located, we will extend the hand of friendship and endeavour to get you established in the most appropriate support group in the area (there are a number of other support groups in Norfolk). Please get in touch: contact@parkinsonsnorfolk.co.uk or 01603 782667.

Quick Curry
Are you trying to cut down on calories in a New Year health drive or just looking for a quick replacement for a take-away? This recipe fills the brief on both counts. Ready in about 20 minutes, adaptable and tasty. It also improves on keeping in the fridge for a day or two to develop the flavours. This recipe serves two but is easily doubled.
Ingredients 250g boneless chicken, cut into 2cm cubes/Quorn pieces 1 large red onion, thinly sliced into half moons 1 tbl spoon sunflower oil 2 tsps garlic and ginger paste (I use Tesco’s own) 2 tsps chilli paste from a jar
I can chopped tomatoes 2 tsps garam masala 3 tbl spoons fat free natural yogurt Chopped coriander (optional)
Method Heat the oil in a large pan, add the onion and gently fry until soft and translucent. Add the garlic and ginger paste and chilli paste and fry for a further I minute. Add the tomatoes and about 100mls of water, bring to a simmer and cook for 2 minutes. Add the chicken and sprinkle over the garam masala, mix well. Cover and cook for about 6-8 minutes (check the chicken is cooked through). Take off the heat then stir in the yogurt, sprinkle with the fresh coriander if using. Serve immediately with boiled rice, cauli rice or warm naan bread.

recycling and upcycling clothes.
Merchants’ Place will be offering young people a chance to gain knowledge of food hygiene, reducing food waste and supporting local people experiencing hardship. As part of the project, their in-house Opportunities Coach will support participants with CV support, interview skills, job searching and more.
Whatever stage young people are at with their journey towards work, training or volunteering, we will help them move forward at their own pace. To register interest, you can contact Merchants’ Place by calling 01263 519454 or emailing info@merchantsplace.co.uk. Fast and Fabulous Food!
Why is it that we crave the kinds of foods that are so bad for us? And while we’re at it, why MUST food be fast?
We have never had so much variety and abundance, yet many of us fill our bellies with substances that provide us with little nutritional value and a whole heap of chemicals that our bodies struggle to process; little wonder that we fall ill.
Surely mealtimes should be long leisurely events to savour and enjoy? Yet we have been conditioned by the food industry to crave instant fast foodstuffs such as burgers, and who doesn’t enjoy a big, juicy quarter pounder jam packed with pickle, cheese, ketchup, mustard, mayo, fried onions and salad? (My mouth is literally watering as I type this!) So, the only way forward is to make your own at home....admittedly this takes me a little longer than driving to a takeaway, but I know exactly what's in it and feel no guilt after devouring it!
The following recipe has been tweaked over many years to become the spectacular outcome it now is. You will also notice that it contains no meat or dairy –helpful for those of you who are vegetarian or vegan, but also a great addition to any recipe repertoire to enable us to get more veggies, nutrients and fibre into us. Don’t be put off by Tofu; it is a great and affordable protein source, and if you use the Tofoo brand which is already pressed to
remove excess water, it is very easy to use and tastes delicious.
The result is the juiciest, most flavour filled burger you could want, loaded with goodness and no nasties. If you wedge some baking potatoes and toss them in a little olive oil and roast for around half an hour, you have a mega feast to be proud of, rather than a takeaway to regret.
Beautiful Big Burgers (Tofoo Style)
Olive oil 1 pack smoked Tofoo patted dry and grated 1 very large flat mushroom, finely chopped 1 onion, finely chopped 2 tsp Smoked paprika 1 flat tsp Garlic salt Good splash Tamari or Soy sauce Splash balsamic vinegar 1 vacuum packed cooked beetroot, grated Tsp Brown miso paste, mixed with a little warm water 1 to 2 tblsp porridge oats 1 tblsp chickpea flour
Gently fry the onion in a little olive oil for a few minutes or until pale and soft, then add the mushrooms and Tofoo, stirring for a few minutes.
Add the paprika and garlic salt and the splashes of vinegars and stir to combine.
www.rosevillapublications.co.uk
25
Remove from the heat and stir in the beetroot and miso and enough oats and flour to bind it all together, ensuring you have mixed it all in well, and form first into a firm ball, and then flatten into a burger pattie, smoothing out the edges (if the mix feels a little dry add another splash of tamari and a little splash of olive oil.)
Place on an oiled baking tray and put in the fridge to firm up for at least an hour (you can make these well ahead of time and keep in the fridge for up to a day if you cling film the top)
When ready to cook, place in a preheated oven on 180 degrees for about half hour, checking after 20 mins-they should be heated right through and just starting to brown.
Serve in a good quality wholemeal bun with caramelised onion, melty cheese and salad, with your preferred dressing. Carolyn Burn

Sheringham Independent February 2022
One of the UK’s largest residetial developers axes ground rent increases Leases are granted over properties and exist for a finite period of time. Once this period comes to an end, the property reverts to the freehold owner.
When an individual purchases a lease, they do so subject to certain conditions, such as that they will pay ground rent periodically and that they will acquire the freeholder's consent if they wish to sell the lease.
An issue which has arisen in recent years is that developers have begun including provisions thereby enabling them to double ground rent periodically, which makes leases both difficult to sell and mortgage.
In May of this year the Leasehold Reform (Ground Rent) Bill was introduced to Parliament and further to this, in September the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) launched enforcement action against developers including Taylor Wimpey, Countryside, Barratt Developments and Persimmon Homes for "possible unfair contract terms" relating to ground rent.
Taylor Wimpey have now voluntarily committed to remove any such unfair terms from their existing leasehold contracts and to exclude these terms from new contracts. The effect of this is that ground rent will now be set at the rate it was when the property was sold and will not rise over time. Countryside Properties has voluntarily removed the terms from their contracts and Aviva who purchased freeholds from
developers also agreed to remove ground rent terms that were considered unfair. We wait to see if other developers will follow Taylor Wimpey without further intervention from the CMA and the outcome of the ongoing investigation in Barratt Development.

Omicron Hospitality and Leisure Grant
ironing39@outlook.com
The Omicron Hospitality and Leisure Grant (OHLG) is now live and North Norfolk District Council’s Revenues service has contacted all eligible businesses by email or letter inviting them to apply.
In response to the rapid spread of the Omicron variant, the Government announced before Christmas that grants of up to £6,000 would be made available to hospitality and leisure businesses.
The £8 million paid to North Norfolk District Council to distribute is the largest single allocation to a Norfolk authority and is based on the District having over 3,000 hospitality, leisure and accommodation businesses, who continue to be hit hard by the economic impacts of Covid.
The allocation comes from a national support package of £1bn, with North Norfolk District Council receiving over £8m to distribute to eligible businesses.
Government guidance is available on what businesses will be eligible for support and how much funding each business will receive based on the rateable value of the property occupied.
Businesses operating in the Hospitality, Leisure and Accommodation industry will be able to apply for grants of up to £6,000, depending on their rateable value. www.rosevillapublications.co.uk
Please read what evidence is needed before going online to apply as only applications with the requested evidence will be assessed by the cut-off date of 25 February 2022.
More information on the grant, including application, thresholds and amounts can be viewed on the NNDC website.
Cllr. Richard Kershaw, portfolio holder for Sustainable Growth said: “Businesses in North Norfolk have been critically hit by the impact of COVID and have shown resilience in their measures taken to counter the spread of the virus, and in adapting their businesses to protect their public. These grants will be vital for our business community and over the coming months, we will continue to monitor the situation in North Norfolk to see if we need to ask for additional funding”
NNDC has also received over £178,000 in discretionary Additional Restrictions Grant (ARG) top-up funding for other businesses affected by Omicron, for example venues, sole traders, wedding support companies and others.
For a comprehensive list of eligible business for all grants please read the full guidance available at GOV.uk

Worse Things Happen at Sea
“Mayday Mayday Mayday, this is Humber Coastguard. We are receiving a “man overboard” distress call from an automated device”.
if they can see anything going on.
Most days nothing untoward happens beyond walkers asking about tide times and beach access, or perhaps about a distressed seal.
Check the clock. Note the time. Jot down the details. Humber is the Coastguard station to which we report. The distress call is coming from 25 miles away, but we never know when someone else’s incident is going to expand into our 15-mile radius of responsibility.
There are around thirteen incidents a year in “our patch”, roughly one every four weeks. We log and monitor all the big commercial ships that pass, but our main focus is on more vulnerable craft and people: local crab boats, pleasure craft, dive boats, paddleboarders, walkers, joggers, hangliders and so on.
The radio fires up again to announce there are now two further distress calls from two more sources in the same area, and I can hear the Coastguard asking particular ships in the area
Occasionally a dog falls half-way down the cliff and needs rescuing, a dive boat is unable to contact HMCG (we can relay their messages) or we check with the beach lifeguards that they still have sight of a child’s inflatable. Sometimes a hanglider crashes, a walker has a heart attack, or a desperate soul sees the 175 feet high cliffs as an answer. We’re here to help if we can.
It’s a great “job”. In winter the seas can be spectacular, recently reducing a, thankfully unoccupied, sloop to matchwood on the beach just below the station. In summer, with visibility through telescopes to windfarms and gas platforms up to thirty miles away, blue sky, blue sea, and little steam trains chugging their way across the beautiful Norfolk landscape, it can feel like heaven on earth.
Training takes about 6 weeks of weekly three-hour sessions plus some self-study. Coastwatch is interesting, worthwhile and fun: there’s plenty of tech for techies, some numbers for crunchers, occasionally walkers who want to chat (covid permitting), but mostly, if you enjoy sole personal responsibility (managers are only a phone call away) of being a Watchkeeper high on the cliffs watching the sea and helping Coastguards keep people safe: Coastwatch is for you. We always welcome new volunteers. Minimum commitment is a four-hour watch per week.

Evolution of dermal fillers: The 4th dimension. Do we now have something that delays skin ageing?
• Dermal filler treatments are non-surgical treatments • Fillers can soften lines and wrinkles • Fillers can be used to restore lost facial volume • Skin-boosters improve skin health and hydration • Fillers can be used to provide a threedimensional facelift • New research shows they can hold back years • There are more than 200 fillers in use, not all are safe • Most experts recommend avoiding permanent fillers • Improper use can cause problems • Treatments are largely unregulated so choose your practitioner wisely • At the Coltishall Clinic we specialise in providing a natural look and work hard to provide a safe and comfortable treatment.
Restylane range of dermal fillers has been used
for 25 years and 50 million treatments have been carried out worldwide.
Dr Sanjay Gheyi MBBS MS FRCS BCAAM, Medical Director at the Coltishall Cosmetic Clinic says “they come and they go, but HA based fillers have stood the test of time. It is not that we shy away from new treatments. For those of you who know us-we have invested heavily in new technology and have 25 state-of-the-art lasers and light devices.”
Our doctors have personally carried out thousands of Restylane treatments over last fourteen years and it works, is very cost effective and it lasts longer than many other products on the market. We also use other reputable dermal fillers such as Belotero, Radiesse, Profhilo and Juvederm range which are also fantastic treatments.
Dr Ava Lee BSc MSc MBBS MRCP (UK)(Dermatology) is our highly qualified Consultant Dermatologist and also offers some

When we first started doing dermal filler treatments the emphasis was on filling lines and wrinkles, we saw with interest as gradually we began to understand how our face ages and deflate with time. So the focus shifted to replacing lost volume. We moved from filling lines and wrinkles to adding volume. We also knew that in addition to loss of volume, gravity takes its toll and face begins to sag. We never thought that using fillers could fight gravity un till new research came out just now that shows it is possible. We now have evidence that using hyaluronic acid dermal fillers strengthens the deeper layer of the face. This firms up deeper tissue, which resists gravitational descent. We can say with confidence that use of our treatments can delay ageing. SHERINGHAM CHAMBER OF TRADE APPEALS FOR COMMITTEE MEMBERS
Sheringham Chamber of Trade is appealing to traders in the area to become committee members. There are several existing committee members about to leave their posts at the next AGM, scheduled for the end of February. Without an influx of new committee members, the Chamber is in serious danger of “winding up”.
As many businesses in the Sheringham area will know, the local Chamber of Trade has represented traders for many decades. The present committee has worked hard over recent years to support local businesses when needed, particularly through recent events in the town, like the infamous “sink-hole”, and of course, more recently through the issues caused by the pandemic.
It is important there is a group of people who can represent traders locally. We have been able to lobby local government frequently – always taking up issues that it was felt may influence trading circumstances. As everyone in the “High Street”, or in other types of business, is fully aware the commercial situation is changing and evolving tremendously. We never know what is round the corner. It is extremely important there is a group prepared to look at matters effecting commerce, and raise local issues whenever necessary, with whoever it feels may help.
It does not matter what your business background is, or what type of trader you are in Sheringham, so long as you have an interest in the Town and helping to represent local commerce. The more varied the members backgrounds are, the better. If you often feel you would like to see more happening in the town, why don’t you step forward, and do as much or as little as your time allows. The present “set-up” is very informal, we meet once a month through the year. There are a few “officers posts” on the committee that need filling – e.g. Chair and Secretary. It is up to each committee, each year to decide how it works, how it is managed and what it wishes to achieve. So do not feel it is restrictive in any way. Being a committee, decisions are taken by a majority vote.
Why don’t you get involved, and mould the Chamber (or whatever the organisation may become known as in future) into the organisation you feel is relevant for the town? As mentioned above, without any response, the present Chamber is likely to disappear. If you would like to be involved, contact the present Chair at chairman@sheringhamchamber.co.uk

North Norfolk Photographic Society’s latest competition gave members the challenge of producing a ‘panel’ of five images based on any chosen topic. The entries were varied and portrayed members’ wide interests in subject matter and demonstrated all aspects of their photographic skills.
In a photographic ‘panel’ competition, not only do the images have to be excellent individually, but they also must relate to one another and to be arranged (as a panel) in an interesting and attractive way. The judge for the evening was Andy Swain who has visited the club previously; he was very thorough and Bird Relationships by Mick Walker viewed both the individual images and the overall effect of the chosen panel before giving awards. The evening gave members the opportunity to view the range of images as well as to receive useful tips detailing how to plan and improve a panel of chosen photographs. The results of the evening’s entries were:

Remembering RAF West Beckham
www.northnorfolkfuneralservices.co.uk
clint_brown_1@hotmail.com
Information boards have recently been installed in the Bodham and Beckham Village Hall telling the story of the part played by the two villages in the war effort during World War ll.
C
Bodham Hill (partly in West Beckham) was the site of one of the pioneering 'Chain Home' radar stations along the coast which helped the returning squadrons find their way back to their bases after operations in Europe. Opened in 1938, RAF West Beckham operated for twenty years until improvements in radar technology made the station obsolete.
The station, Site A, had a mixture of metal transmitting towers, 110m high, and wooden receiving towers, 73m high and the current West Beckham village sign has two of these towers shown in the background. At the foot of the towers was the station itself in reinforced bunkers above ground with the facilities replicated underground in case of bomb damage on the surface. The living quarters for up to 100 staff were some distance away in case of attack with B site at the WAAF Marlpit Camp at the end of Red Hart Lane and an army detachment of the Royal Norfolk Regiment, who guarded RAF West Beckham, situated at Site C close to what is now the Pightle Joinery works along Rectory Road.
Unfortunately, the towers were to cause a fatal crash on 11th May 1942 when a Vickers Wellington Mark lll on a training flight flew into one of the wooden towers in poor visibility. The plane came down in the field just to the north and burst into flames on impact killing the three crewmen on board. Their memorials are in the War Graves Plot at RAF Marham.
RAF West Beckham brought the villages to life in the twenty years it was open with many social events open to local people. The Station Commander in World War ll was a famous dance band leader, the first to broadcast on the newly formed BBC in the 1930s, Marius B Winter. (You can find him on youtube!) His connections in the entertainment business meant that the Sunday dances at the Marl Pit Camp had some top performers which attracted service people from other camps in North Norfolk. In the 1950s the dances moved to the Bodham Village Hall and were known as the 'Bodham Hop'. All this came to an end with the closure of the station and the towers were demolished soon afterwards.
Some buildings still remain but they are all on private land and are not open to the public.
Local resident, Mike Digby who lives on the site has created a website with a large collection of photographs, which can be accessed online, and provided us with information to create the boards in the Bodham and Beckham Hall for which we are very grateful.
If you would like to visit the hall and view the Display Boards, arrangements can be made via Ann Digby on 01263 588409, Pam Baker 01263 588740 or Jackie Bedell 01263 588743.
On the edge of the site was the Royal Observer Corps post which was manned by three service personnel who were responsible for tracking and identifying planes once they were over land and therefore behind radar coverage. This site was later used for a two man underground Cold War bunker for use in the event of a nuclear attack and was finally de-commissioned in 1992 with the collapse of the Soviet Union.

Groveland Restaurant – New Beginnings
Exciting times are on their way to North Norfolk’s Groveland Restaurant. Nestled in the glorious countryside with uninterrupted views, the restaurant is fully licensed and offers ample free parking.
Award-winning milkshake brand Shakes Rattle and Roll owner Leon Walder has taken the helm and fulfilled his lifelong dream of owning his own restaurant.
With a wealth of knowledge and experience in the hospitality business, Leon is planning to enhance the current food offering at the restaurant and is working closely together with local food and brewery suppliers to support small businesses and stay true to his local ethos. Showcasing a delightful array of Norfolk produce and locally sourced fresh food, prepared from scratch.
The meat, vegetable and deli produce will be sourced from the farm shop and butchers adjacent to the restaurant so it doesn’t get much fresher than that! If you just fancy a cuppa, enjoy quality Calypso coffee and speciality tea to be enjoyed with mouth-watering homemade cakes and scones.
The ever-popular Shakes Rattle and Roll brand of gourmet milkshakes will be making a long- awaited comeback in the restaurant very soon, lovingly made from Norfolk’s Ronaldo’s ice cream and the finest sweet
treats, available in full and mini sizes for the little ones, there is nothing quite like them locally, they are worth making the trip for them alone.
Moving forwards, plans are underway to offer fresh, quality Sunday lunches, evening restaurant opening, quiz evenings, around the world concept evenings, private functions, with or without catering and wedding celebrations. We are also very keen to welcome mum and toddler groups, or friendship groups who are looking for somewhere to meet and socialise after the pandemic.
The restaurant is also a part of the Chatty Café scheme, which was set up to battle loneliness, each day a table will be set aside and labelled for those that would like to share a table with a stranger and become acquainted. Leon is hoping that introducing the scheme will help to create a social hub and give his customers an avenue to meet new people.

Chief Inspector Jon Chapman, of the Joint Roads & Armed Policing Team, said: “Driving whilst under the influence of drink or drugs is one of the ‘Fatal Four’ offences, which makes you more likely to be involved in either a serious or fatal collision – alongside speeding, driving whilst using a mobile phone and driving without wearing a seatbelt.
Anyone with information about suspected drink or drug driving should contact Norfolk Police, by either emailing their local Safer Neighbourhood Team - the details of which can be found here: www.norfolk.police.uk/your-area - or by calling 101.

Fifty-six chess players from Norfolk and beyond recently took part in a Rapid-play Congress, held at Horstead Tithe Barn. Right on Target
On Sunday 9th January 2022, Holt Woodlands Archery and Airgun Club, Holt, Norfolk was host to members of the Armed Forces and Veterans Breakfast Club, Cromer. The proprietor, Jonathan Hancock was presented with an AFVBC Certificate of Appreciation plus an AFVBC Shield and named as honoured amongst our local Veterans. The certificate was presented by Holt resident and local Veterans’ Chaplain, Bishop Dr John Mills RN and the shield by the Right Honourable Duncan Baker, Member of Parliament for North Norfolk.
One of the main issues for Veterans today is their mental health and PTSD with increasing levels of suicide amongst veterans. Sadly, more veterans die of suicide than they do in combat and therefore, the ethos of the club is mutual support, advising and supporting on welfare issues or just providing an arm around
the shoulder. The natural willingness to help others stems from the tradition and camaraderie that life in the Armed Services instils.
Jonathan is and has been a great supporter of Cromer AFVBC and has done everything in his power to facilitate the use of the Archery and Airgun Club by Veterans. He has been a real stalwart in helping our local Veterans and others who have their own stress and problems, even at a time when he was going through his own battle with stress and some difficulty over the archery club and grounds. Suffice it to say that Jonathan is a great guy who has gone out of his way to help, and he was made an honorary member of the Armed Forces and Veterans Breakfast Club.
The Armed Forces and Veterans Breakfast Club meets at 1000 every 3rd Sunday of the month at Breakers Café Garden Street, Cromer. Those who have lost loved ones are especially welcome. For those veterans who are financially challenged, homeless or in need, we offer free breakfasts. Contact afvbccromer@talktalk.net
Norfolk Cycle Challenge to celebrate 250 years of NNUH A new cycle challenge has been set by the Norfolk and Norwich Hospitals Charity in celebration of the hospital’s 250th anniversary.
The fitness fundraising challenge is part of the celebrations to mark the special anniversary in our county’s healthcare history, allowing the charity to also celebrate 250 years of philanthropy.
Work began on original hospital in St Stephens, in the heart of Norwich city centre, began in 1771 and opened for patients in 1772 with 100 beds, all of which could only happened with the generosity of donations. The hospital was later rebuilt at the present Colney Lane site and opened to patients in 2001.
For 2022, the N&N Hospitals Charity is challenging everyone to participate in the Norfolk Village Cycle Challenge. Whether you are a beginner or a more experienced cyclist, we want you to get on your bike to fundraise and or donate in multiples of £25 to represent the 250
years of charitable donations that has benefited our NHS hospital.
Among the challenges are to cycle to and around as many of Norfolk’s villages and towns; choose to cycle 2.5, 25 or 250 miles to mark our anniversary or even tailor an option to suit your own specific requirements, ability and timelines.
The aim is to have fun fundraising and to go out and visit the amazing landmarks around our beautiful county.

Chloe Hits Six for County Swimming Championships
Swimmer Chloe Jackson, of the North Norfolk Vikings Club has achieved six county qualifying times for the Norfolk County Championships which will be held later this month (February) at the UEA.
Her main focus will be on her freestyle as she qualified first in the 400m in the qualifying gala, the Norwich High School student swam sixteen lengths of the UEA pool to achieve a time of 6:24.67 finishing in fifth place in the 200m, she finished just ahead of fellow Viking Jess Seamark by just over a second, completing the course in 2:51.18. and subsequently qualified in the 100m in 1:15.63.
After achieving a hat-trick of freestyle qualifiers she demonstrated her all round swimming ability by competing in the 200m
Individual Medley. An event where swimmers do all of the four strokes in one race. Chloe, aged fourteen, who has only recently moved over to the club, made no mistakes and subsequently hit the pad in 3:15.75. She then adapted quickly from middle distance to sprints and rounded off her programme with two successful butterfly sprints in the 50m she qualified in 41.87 - narrowly missing out on a bronze medal and in the 100m she went 1:35.35 to complete the six.
Chloe, who trains three times a week and makes a twenty-seven-mile round trip from Hellesdon to the Victory Pool in North Walsham said: “I have found that Vikings are a very welcoming club and I want to do well for them.”
Chole will join a very strong team of fourteen Vikings over two weekends at the UEA., under the auspices of lead coach Sam Watts. John Holden
