Innoventures Recycle Fashion Show 2018 The final students to make an appearance in the fashion show were the grade 3, 4 and 5 students. The bigger the students, the bigger the costumes! The theme for our grade 3-5 students was to base their costume on a book or movie character that inspired them. Our expectant crowd were not disappointed with the standard of the costumes on display.

Characters such as Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Ella from Frozen, Cinderella, The Snow Queen, Harry Potter, and James Bond made an appearance, as well as a few gladiators wielding their swords!

Our enthusiastic audience raised the roof when some of the primary school staff and teachers strutted their stuff on the catwalk too! A possible change in profession may be on the horizon! A huge thanks must be given to our facilities staff for setting up the venue, our CAS students for the music and guidance to the younger students, the Grade 4 and 5 ushers, students, teachers, PLT and parents, who gave us their support throughout the day. We are looking forward to next year’s fashion show already!

News from Grade 1 Team Poetry Performance This unit our Grade One pupils were learning about ‘Patterns’. We linked into this theme by learning poetry and discovering all the patterns, rhythms and rhymes that are found in Poems.

With poetry and acting being such a big part of the drama curriculum, we thought it was a wonderful opportunity to let our pupils perform their choral verse for you, their parents. Each classPrimary chose a poem, memorized it and learned the skill of speaking together.

We also took this opportunity to learn a group piece ‘We’re going on a Bear Hunt’, by Julia Donaldson and a Pattern Song which our pupils loved!

Art echoed the Pattern theme and made the most spectacular back drop out of every single grade one pupils work, inspired by Vincent van Gogh’s ‘Starry Night’.

News from Grade 1 Team Grade 1 went to Mushrif Park as part of their Tuning In to Unit 5 “Homes are designed according to geography and resources.� They completed a scavenger hunt to find the different homes and answer questions about them.

They were thinkers when identifying the countries the houses were from and some of the materials they were made from. They were also reflective and compared the homes, deciding which one was their favourite.

They had to work as a team, showing co-operation, and commitment when some were hard to find!

Character Counts Character comprises of a group of traits that determine a person’s success in his life.

I would refer to the statement by Abraham Lincoln “Reputation is the shadow. Character is the tree.” Character is considered to be plural, as it involves not one but may traits.

We may list difference traits as important for us to be successful in life: Attentiveness, compassion, reliability, perseverance, determination, endurance, flexibility, and responsibility are few examples of character traits. Abraham Lincoln was successful because of his “perseverance”. Despite the many challenges and failures, he didn’t stop from pursuing towards his goals. Character is something that is engraved into us by our life experiences. These experiences may take us out of our comfort zones in order to find new resources within ourselves to achieve our goals and to be successful. It is important that we facilitate the right learning experience for our children to build in these character traits right from the young age. In our next parent coffee morning, which is to be held on 13 May 2018, you will get to hear more about character building from our guest Primary speaker Ms. Saira Ranj.

Amazing Aquatic Adventure in KG2 As part of our new unit, Sharing the Planet, KG2 visited Dubai Aquarium and Underwater Zoo. As we walked through Dubai Mall, we were met with the sight of the gigantic impressive aquarium. The Aquarium teachers sang a song about sharks and we enthusiastically joined in with the actions. The sharks even swam past in time to the tune!

Our Aquarium teachers then took each class on a winding tour of the Aquarium and Zoo; explaining each habitat and the creatures.

We excitedly met different species by carefully touching a real life starfish, playing with the friendly penguins, walking over a glass floor to see a humongous crocodile even venturing over a rope bridge to spot creatures of the UAE including a beautiful owl. The highlight of the trip had to be lying down, inside the tunnel, to look up at the magnificent rays and enormous sharks. What a fantastic learning experience!

Jack and the Beanstalk - Grade 2 & Grade 3 Show This year our Grade 2 & 3 pupils performed ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’.

We included every child in both year groups, which gave each child the opportunity to perform on stage. This was very important to us as we feel it a very useful life skill for each and every child to learn to have the confidence to stand up in front of an audience.

We love collaborating in the Arts department, and this year our Grade 2 pupils were inspired by the different scenes the classes were doing and decided to create scenes through positive and negative print making concepts. The Grade 3 pupils worked on warm and Primary cool color concepts, inspired by the famous artist Claude Monnet, using their imagination and understanding landscape sceneries, from their choice of medias taught earlier in the year.

Whilst every child performed songs and movement in the show, every pupils was asked to learn a small part from the script and audition in class. I was amazed as to the drama talent we have in our school, and commend those pupils who were awarded narrator and character parts. Well done!

Our pupils worked very hard preparing for their performance and were thrilled to have so many parents, family and friends to perform to. Your appreciation and applause was amazing and the children absolutely loved it!

News from the Head of Science Department– Ms. Shagufta How can you know if the acid is neutralized?

Grade 7 science students used indicators to see how the process of neutralization can be followed.

They were exploring use of antacids to cure stomach acidity and the task linked with one of the conceptual questions students were exploring as part of their unit on mapping matter.

How does surface area to volume ratio limit cell size?

Cells are so little, so they can maximize their ratio of surface area to volume. Smaller cells have a higher ratio which allow more molecules and ions move across the cell membrane per unit of cytoplasmic volume. Cells are so small because they need to be able to get the nutrients in and the waste out quickly. Small cells are efficient hence they are microscopic and cannot be seen by the naked eye. Students in grade 9 MYP biology investigated cell surface area to volume ratio as part of their criterion C assessment. They used agar gel, to see how surface area to volume ratio affects absorption of nutrients and then related it to microscopic size of cells to explain their efficiency.

Term 3 will be a busy term for our basketball, cricket and rounders teams. A special mention to our u13 girls first RWA rounders' team.

Web Design Team’s experience The DIA tech was a very insightful and informative event. Bruna Cardoso, Joonyoung Moon and Herman participated in the web designing competition.

The atmosphere in the main hall where the actual DIA tech event was happening was lively and filled with numerous students and teachers discussing about various types of technology and making their presentations. When the timer for the web design competition began I was quite nervous as I didn’t think my team and I would be able to complete the website with the allotted time.

We had run into a few problems, mainly with image resizing and fitting within the webpage. However, we were able to swiftly add the necessary text required for the website and write the lines of code that would later in the day help us achieve the victory that we deserved.

RIT Artificial Intelligence Workshop - By Technology Department On Monday April 16, 2018, five computer science students attended a workshop at RIT Dubai which gave them a glimpse of artificial intelligence. The students worked with an AI controlled robot named Cozmo. They also learned about superintelligence which is basically a world where robots are smarter than humans and they have the power to even control us. It was an amazing day of learning and fun.

NYU Abudhabi Robotics Championship by Technology Department Five students from Grade 11 (Team NavBot) participated in a Robotics Championship in New York University Abu Dhabi (@botballUAE) one April 20th and 21st, 2018.

The two days were packed with lectures, competitions with teams from other schools from the UAE and GCC. Even though team NavBot did not finish in the top three, they were recognized as the rookie team with an award as it was their first time participating. The students gained a variety of skills and listened to many valuable talks by robotic experts and will benefit from this in their IB subjects and in their future careers.
