From the President Greetings Red & White Enthusiasts! I would like to start out by welcoming Mandy Sell to the RWDCA as our new manager we are excited about the future, Mandy brings a high level of skills and extreme passion for the Red and White Dairy Cow. What an awesome Red and White convention that was held this past July in Westminster, Baltimore. A special thank you to the Mason Dixon Red and White Dairy Club for all their time and effort. It is obvious with the results of the Red and White sale that the demand and interest in Red and Whites continues dominate the dairy breeds. Thanks to Chris, Jennifer Hill and the entire sales crew and Pheasant –Echo’s farm for hosting the sale and other convention events. I have had the opportunity to be a part of this association for the past 8 years either as a committee member or board member. It has been a great opportunity to gain a better understanding of the roots of this Association and to become better acquainted with some of the early members that have played a key role in getting us to where we are today. Each year we add new board members, leadership and members to this Association. It is my privilege to serve each of you for the upcoming year. I take this responsibility very seriously and will rely on the current board of directors, management and you the members for input and advice as we move forward. I believe in transparency and open communication, if at anytime you have questions or concerns please don’t hesitate to reach out to me , We all know that change is happening all around us in the World and Country in which we live. The RWDCA is not exempt from change and having to adapt and respond to the challenges and opportunities that come with it. The past few years this Association has gone through some changes, past boards have had to make decisions regarding a changing world and industry. “The secret of change is to focus all of your energy not on fighting the old, But on building the new” (Socrates). The past few years that has been the focus of your board of directors, we fully understand and respect the efforts and history of the past. We also understand the responsibility of the future. For many years the way that we have communicated has not changed much, as we enter a new era of communication its crucial that we as an organization adapt. Your board of directors are committed and will work diligently to maintain RWDCA as the source that the world has and will continue to look to when it comes to information regarding the red and white dairy cow. In order to do that we will have to continue to adapt and change to the demands of the market place. We are fortunate to have an established publication (Bloodlines) to build from, we will continue to look for ways to improve the bloodlines to meet the needs of our advertisers and readers. In closing I look forward to the year that is ahead of us, I wish each of you the best as you individually determine the type of red and white cow that best fits your needs and desires. Respectfully, Mike Brown RWDCA President browndairy@hotmail.com

Hello Red and White breeders, exhibitors and enthusiasts, my name is McKenna Coffeen and I am your newly crowned National Red and White Dairy Cattle Association Queen. I am honored and excited to serve this year not only as queen, but truly as an ambassador for this breed. I am the 16-year-old daughter of Kevin and Peggy Coffeen, and Kori Coffeen. I reside in De Pere, Wisconsin, and will be a senior at West De Pere High School this fall. I have been showing Red and Whites since I was 4, and became an RWDCA member when I was 9. I currently own a small herd of Holsteins and Red and Whites and exhibit them at local, state and national shows. I have a love and passion for the Red and White cow, and can’t wait to share in it with people from all over the country for the next year. Over the next 12 months I will travel around the country attending show and events, representing our breed. One of my goals to enhance our junior programs and events, as well as encourage more junior participation within our organization. You can stay updated by liking my Facebook page “National Red and White Queen.” I am so excited to meet many of you this year and see what my year as queen has to offer!

by Hannah Hensel

In 2011, I wanted to show a calf at the fair. I don’t live on a farm or own a calf. My mom talked to Kyli Brown, 4-H youth advisor. She said that I could show one of her brother, Adam’s calves at the fair. Kyli said that we would meet again in the spring. In the spring, we went to Adam’s farm. When we got there, Kyli took me straight to the calf barn. I chose a red and white spring heifer calf named Mylie. We won supreme junior champion. I learned so much from Adam. After a great time at the fair, I knew I loved Holsteins and knew I wanted to continue learning about Holsteins and showing them. Since then, I have bought three red and white Holsteins from Adam. Adam takes me and my heifers to shows at District, State, and the fair. We have done very well and won many championships. I have really had great opportunities to improve my showmanship skills with all of these competitions. He is a really good coach to me. Adam and Chelsey own Tree Hayven Holsteins in Auburndale. He really helps me. He teaches me how to show, clip, feed, keep the heifers and cows healthy and take care of them when they get sick. Adam tells me not to hug and kiss the heifers because it spoils them, but I still do it some anyway. Adam is firm with me when I get upset or discouraged, he tells me “No crying in the show ring”, then he changed it to “No crying at the show.” He has taught me confidence. Adam teaches me the importance of care and respect of the animals and the other people you work and show with. I have made many new friends because of Adam. I have joined Wood County Junior Holsteins and the Red and White Association. I have been active in many activities and learned so much. I may not live on a farm, but I know that I love Holsteins and hope to continue to learn and grow my knowledge. Adam is my biggest role model in the dairy industry because he takes the time to help me learn about Holsteins even when he is so busy farming. He didn’t even know who I was at first but has made me feel welcome and an important part of his show and farm family since meeting him. I really respect Adam. He is smart and caring about his family, his animals, his friends and now me. Because of Adam, I know that I want to grow up and be a part of the dairy industry. 8

Be sure to head to Reedsville, WI on September 17th! Also selling are 2 amps of Triple Threat and 6 amps of Citation R! Be sure to keep to date with the sale on the RWDCA Facebook page!

Meet your Board Member I currently live on my dairy farm of 330 acres in southwestern New York. I milk 65 registered Holsteins and about 15 registered Jerseys. I grew up on my dairy farm and I have always loved the cows. From 1999-2002 I milked 50 cows but sold my herd and young stock to finish graduate school in Business. Something has always brought me back to the farm. I also work full time off the farm for a large bank. I understand the challenges many smaller family farms face today. I am hands on, I milk my cows with limited outside help and my brother does the crops for me. I have always had a love for the Red & White Cow. I look forward to working with many of you as a director for RWDCA. Please feel free to contact me directly at anytime. 9

Triple-Hil Sires-The Bulls That Were Bred to Be Cows

Triple-Hil Sires: Lowell Martin, Jared Martin, Galen Weber

Jared & Lowell Martin began selling semen on their first bull in June 2010. At that point in time, it was two teenagers, aged 17 and 18 with one young home-bred bull housed in the bottom of an old stone bank-barn. They were passionate about this bull, 525HO101 Jesh, who was a Stormin Norman son from a VG-86 Durham. Jesh (now EX-94 as a 7 yr old) had a rare aAa code of 6-4-2 which enabled them to market a few hundred units to local farmers in the area, but they had no idea at that point, that only a year down the road, they would be building a 9-pen bull-housing facility. Their passion and foundational breeding philosophy was at that time, and still is today, aAa and deep cow-families. Triple-Hil Sires was inspired by their personal interest in cattle breeding, and then moved to action by the increasingly loud voice from breeders all over the country who were weary of the ever-changing index system and alarmed at the pace of the genomic rush. Add Galen Weber to the partnership, and that's where Triple-Hil Sires is today. The three share responsibilities in the bull business and on their 70-head dairy operation. Although their business is still small by many standards, it has grown to the point that beyond their own local sales routes, they are working with nearly a dozen independent semen dealers across the nation. The bulls are housed at the farm in Smithsburg MD, and are currently being collected at North America Breeders in Berryville, Virginia. In addition to marketing their own bulls, they also market other breeder owned and proven Holstein bulls. From their stand point, there are many obscure bulls with tremendous pedigrees all over the world that are genetically every bit as good or better than some of the hottest sires on the market today. Triple-Hil shines a light on such bulls.

aAa is a foundational principle in the way they view cattle. They believe that this system of animal analysis, embodies the true principles of bovine structure and functionality. Using aAa analysis results in common-sense matings that are aimed at matching a cow’s weak points with a bull’s strong points. They believe that the mating that produces a great bull is identical to the mating that produces a great cow. Hence comes to life the Triple-Hil slogan: the bulls that were bred to be cows. Another niche market that they are pursuing is providing dairymen with bulls that exhibit more “round” traits. In aAa terms, specifically “5” smooth and “6” style. The Holstein breed today has a plethora of “3” openness and “2” tall characteristics. They are resolved to provide quality sires that will transmit width, substance, and style. They also place a high premium on the Polled trait, believing it will increasingly play a larger role in the dairy world. They market Burket-Falls polled bulls and also have several in their own lineup. The latest release: 525HO117 Rex-PP-Red (Pictured on the cover)is a homozygous polled R&W A2/A2 bull straight from Roxy line. He has a muchneed aAa code of 5-4-6. As Christians, Triple-Hil makes an effort to put God and family first in their lives, and wish to go wherever the Lord may lead them. At this time, they believe they are serving a purpose in providing solid pedigreed Holstein sires for breeders in this country. The future is bright at Triple Hil. When asked about their plan for the next ten years, Jared says 'At this point, our bulls are not under CSS guidelines, therefore not eligible for export anywhere outside the United States. Hopefully, in the next ten years that status changes, as we frequently get interest and inquiries from Canada and Europe.'

Greenlea Ready-Red EX-93 Redliner x Rubens Marlene-Red EX-94

A bit non-traditional, they are not worried about a bull’s indexes. When choosing bulls, they look for bulls from cow families with multiple generations of VG or EX classification scores, big lifetime milk records, and preferably high components. In one word: Longevity.

Just the Beginning for Red & Whites

In 1968, during the 2nd World Dairy Expo®, Red and White cattle walked the colored shavings in their own ring. It would be another 27 years before they had that privilege again. In the years leading up to 1995, the Red and White Dairy Cattle Association approached the World Dairy Expo Board of Directors multiple times asking for the approval of a Red and White ring at Expo. When it was finally granted, before the 1995 show, Bill Langel received a call asking if he would serve as the breed superintendent. Langel accepted and has been the superintendent for the International Red and White Show at Expo ever since. In the early years of Expo, Red and Whites were seen as inferior and unwanted. Many farmers chose to sell them or to breed them to black bulls in hopes of eliminating the gene. According to Langel, the RWDCA knew that in order for their breed and organization to succeed and be accepted, they needed this show at Expo. “Because Expo is the NCAA tournament, the world series. They wouldn’t be truly accepted until they got into this. They knew unless you show at World Dairy Expo, you haven’t made the pinnacle,” remarks Langel. When the news was announced that the Red and Whites would have their own show, the Red and White breeders were ecstatic. They finally had their place at World Dairy Expo. Langel recalls, “The first few years, the show consisted of a few animals that stood out and the rest were just there. And then it exploded.”This “explosion” happened around 2000 according to Langel. All of a sudden the quality in the animals just appeared. Nicky Reape Rueth and her husband, Mark Rueth, farm about an hour north of Madison, WI, at Rosedale Genetics, LLC. They started milking cows and showing at Expo together in 2001. “When we first started, the top couple animals stood out, but the depth in classes was still lacking. This show has progressed in leaps and bounds and has come the farthest out of the shows since its start,” said Rueth. In 2000, when the improvement of quality was being noticed, Lavender Ruby Redrose-Red walked the colored shavings for the first time. No one knew then, that this little Spring Calf would grow up to do what had previously been unachievable. Rosedale Genetics is the proud home of Redrose. “We were always excited about her, even as a two-year-old. She had the youthfulness that dairy producers hope for,” said Rueth. The lack of maturity was something that she was faulted for in the Showring during her early career. However, that youthfulness paid off when she was exhibited as a 5-year-old at Expo. In 2005, at 5 years of age, Redrose became the first, and to this date, only, Supreme Champion to come from the Red and White show. “I can still remember that day perfectly. It was overwhelming and crazy,” recalls Rueth of Redrose’s victory. “We knew we had something great, but you never go into a show expecting to win. You only hope to do your best.” The best is exactly what Redrose was that year. While the Red and Whites have not successfully claimed the Supreme Champion title since Redrose, their ring at Expo has become a center of attention and a highly anticipated show. Everyone watched closely in 2013, when the judge exclaimed, “Bing, Bang, Boom!” With this echoing through the coliseum, KHW Regiment Apple-Red was named Reserve Grand Champion behind her clone, Apple-3, with her daughter, Candy Apple, rounding out the group as Honorable Mention. The advancements that this breed has been able to make so rapidly, many contribute to the addition of their own show at World Dairy Expo. This acceptance has led many traditional Holstein breeders to work with Red and White genetics around the world, according to both Langel and Rueth. When Expo first began, most Red and Whites stayed home because they simply could not compete with the Black and White Holsteins. That has all changed now, as Red and White cattle take on the Holstein ring and emerge victorious. Rueth remarks that she is impressed by the cow families that have developed over the course of the show. In the early years, the animals winning were more like flukes. They were not coming from consistent pedigrees, but now cattle and cow families are returning to the ring year after year and looking better each time. Langel attributes the improvement to the bulls that are available to breeders. He sees better Red and White bulls all of the time with his position at Select Sires. He believes the track this breed is on now, will continue as more improvements are made. What started as a modest show in 1995, of 123 animals, has almost doubled, to 236 animals last year. This breed and show are really just only beginning. “It’s only going to continue to thrive. I have been amazed over the last few years in the quality of champions that this breed has to show. They are very exceptional,” says Rueth.
