Thoughts From R&W... ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••
Dear R&W Members and Readers, 2015 is a big year for the R&W Association! It’s our 70th year providing the NIH community with a vast array of programs and services. Our R&W Association is the most active of any federal agency and I’m very proud of all of the association’s accomplishments. R&W’s largest event of the year is coming up on March 18th at the Verizon Center! It’s our 18th year of supporting the NIH Children’s Charities with the awe-inspiring Ringling Brothers Circus! Over the years, we’re treated more than 27,000 special needs children to a night at the circus, and it’s completely closed to the rest of the public. So, join me at the circus on this very exciting night to help support the NIH Children’s Charities - see more about tickets on page 14! Watch for announcements all year about special events, contests and store sales celebrating R&W’s 70 years at NIH. The R&W Association is growing... and changing. It’s a reflection of the needs of the NIH community, but we continue to aspire to be a beacon for the employees and contractors at NIH, HHS & NOAA.

5 Ways to Get ready for ski & Snowboard season by Brendan A. Dell
The temperatures are dropping, and that means it’s time for ski season. Skiing is great fun for the whole family, and a sure-fire way to beat the winter blahs. Here are some ideas on how to prepare yourself for the slopes.
Get your gear ready Take a good look at your skis or snowboard, and decide if you want to upgrade. New products and innovations can take your boarding and skiing adventures to new heights.
Get your ski legs back When you make that first run, you want to be ready. Depending on your fitness level, you may want to get back into the gym or sign up for exercise classes prior to committing to a full day of skiing. In addition to the legs, most skiing gurus recommend vigorous core training, as well.
Book early The typical ski vacation is planned for January or February, so plan ahead to get the best deals. Many travel sites and ticket brokers are offering promotions now. For ski vacation packages, “the push has been early,” says Gabe Sabile, senior editor for a travel deal site.

Buy a season pass If you are intent on milking the season for all it’s worth, a season pass is a wise investment. Many resorts offer great seasonal deals. With the potential for a long, cold winter ahead, this year is a great time to hook yourself up with unlimited skiing and boarding.
was recognized as having the best program in the nation for new skiers and snowboarders by the National Ski Areas Association for the 2010-2011 season.
Decide where to go Scout out where you want to spend your time boarding or skiing. In the D.C. metro area, there are a number of resorts just a short drive away. Three of the most popular are Liberty, Round Top, and Whitetail. Liberty Located near Gettysburg, PA, Liberty Mountain Resort features 16 trails, with a mixture of beginner, intermediate, and expert, as well as up to fifteen lanes of snow tubing. Round Top Just minutes from I-83, Route 15, I-81, and the Pennsylvania Turnpike, Round Top Mountain Resort was voted the 2012 Best Family Resort in the Mid-Atlantic by On The Snow Visitor’s Choice Awards. Whitetail Located in Mercersburg, PA, Whitetail Resort

NIH Federal Credit Union Diamond Anniversary Proudly celebrating 75 years of service This year, the NIH Federal Credit Union (NIHFCU) marks 75 years of continuous operation–a remarkable achievement by any measure. On January 11, 1940, when nine federal employees pooled $75 and began transacting business out of a shoebox, the NIHFCU was born. From a cramped 5’x6’ space in NIH Building #1 (shared with the NIH telephone operator) to today’s advanced mobile banking solutions, the NIHFCU has enjoyed a fascinating history. Today, as the nation’s largest credit union serving the biomedical industry, the NIHFCU thanks all its members–past and present–for their loyalty and contributions to the credit union’s longevity and success. Rick Wieczorek, NIHFCU’s President & CEO states, “The 75 year evolution of the NIHFCU from its humble beginnings is truly remarkable. This credit union’s ability to grow through the vast social, regulatory and economic changes over the decades is a tribute to all those that have touched the NIHFCU in some way over the years.” Wieczorek adds, “This includes our volunteer and passionate Board and Committee members, and dedicated employees. And, of course, we are most grateful to our
loyal membership, who continue to provide us with the privilege of serving their financial needs.” Throughout 2015, the NIHFCU will announce special ways to celebrate their diamond anniversary with you. NIHFCU members (and non-members) are invited to visit the credit union’s special anniversary web page - nihfcu.org/75 - for related news and announcements. • Step back in time to view archived NIHFCU photos, stories and news clips (many straight from archived editions of the NIH Record) • Share your special NIHFCU story (through March, 2015, NIH members can submit their stories and be entered to win shares of $750 in cash prizes)* • Learn about special Diamond Anniversary promotions and opportunities The NIHFCU remains honored to serve all those dedicated to making the world a healthier place. In 2015, it celebrates not only its past but the promise of a bright future ahead. *No purchases required to enter and win. Must be an NIHFCU member age 18 or older. Visit nihfcu.org/75 for full contest rules.

“Now is the winter of our discontent.” - The Tragedy of Richard III, William Shakespeare. If this winter is giving you a case of discontentment, why not head on down to warmer climes? Changes in latitude, changes in attitude, right? Maybe you can’t spend the entire winter in Boca Raton at Aunt Maxine’s condo, but you may find a long weekend or a week of vacation just might be the ticket. This time of year, there’s lots to see and do in Florida (among other many other places) with a variety of travel options available. Here are some things to keep in mind when looking for the best deals, and a few ideas of what to do when you get there. Shop online and make it easy on yourself. By now, using the internet requires no instruction, just point and click. A good place to start is the Deals section of the R&W Website. FedESP.com has great deals for HHS, NIH, and NOAA em-
ployees, including bargains and deals on entertainment at luxe destinations in the U.S., Caribbean, and Mexico. For example, you can get low-cost, last-minute tee times at golf courses in Orlando, Phoenix, and Las Vegas. Would you rather be shoveling snow, or putting for birdie at Baytree National in Orlando? That’s what I thought. You can also book your hotel room, airline tickets, and rental car through the website. With multiple websites, the travel section of the website allows you pick accommodations and travel options that meet your needs, all at tremendous savings. So, it doesn’t matter if your idea of kicking the winter blues to the curb involves golf in Orlando, a shopping trip to New York City, a surfing safari to Hawaii, or a cruise. Just go to FedESP.com to enjoy great savings on your next getaway. Recreation & Welfare | January/February 2015 9

Ski
West Virginia
12 January/February 2015 | Recreation & Welfare
by Brendan A. Dell
A
re you looking for a great place to ski, but not looking to travel the end of the earth to get there? Why not try West Virginia? West Virginia is noted for its mountains and rolling hills, making it an ideal destination for those in search of alpine thrills. And in West Virginia, skiing means Snowshoe Mountain. Snowshoe Mountain is about four and a half hours from Washington. The mountain contains three different ski areas: Snowshoe Basin, Silver Creek, and Western Territory. Between the three areas, skiers will find 57 trails spread out over 251 acres. Snowshoe Basin has something for every level of expertise, from bomber runs like the Widowmaker, for experts, to the Flume Trail system for first-timers. Silver Creek provides fun for the whole family, including the Coca-Cola Tube Park, night skiing, and Kid’s World. With it’s steep, rough, and rugged terrain, The Western Territory presents the greatest challenges for the advanced set. Visitors have a wide variety of dining options. At Black Run Sugar Shack in Silver Creek, you can fuel up pancakes for breakfast before you hit the slopes. After doing battle with the slopes in the Western Territory, enjoy a drink at Arbuckles Cabin. Or enjoy the view of Shavers Lake at The Boathouse. All of these spots are located slopeside. Not far away, you can dine at Raven Grille, located at Raven Golf Club. This Gary Player Signature course is the #2
ranked public course in the state by Golfweek magazine. The summer months also see activity on the Snowshoe Bike Park, as well as opportunities for hiking in 11,000 acres of wilderness in the backcountry trails. You can also take a Segway tour, shoot at the Snowshoe Sporting Clays Center, ride the zipline, or take the Polaris RPZ Tour. Snowshoe Mountain is also home to St. Bernard Chapel. Catholic and non-Denominational services are offered on weekends and most religious holidays. So if you are thinking of hitting the slopes, or planning ahead for the summer, check out Snowshoe Mountain in West Virginia. Recreation & Welfare | January/February 2015 13

National Acrobatic Troupe members from Beijing. This young group has taken the traditional disciplines of Diabolo, Hoop Diving, Pole Climbing and Bicycle Riding and given them an energized new look and epic physical construction that comes to life during the show. In a breathtaking act of horsemanship and amazing agility, The Thundering Cossack Warriors execute incredible stunts that push the boundaries of strength and courage. The riders, trained acrobats, and horses navigate a specially-designed ring at speeds of more than 25 miles per hour. For this brand-new, mesmerizing Cossack presentation, the troupe performs maneuvers — including the five-man pyramid; the dead-man drag; and many more mind-boggling stunts. The Tuniziani Troupe present a double-wide trapeze act that is both mind-blowing and spectacular to witness. Never before seen is this gravity defying combination of synchronization, newly redesigned rigging and setup that eliminates pauses between maneuvers of flight typically seen in traditional flying trapeze acts. Restaurant Review O
Kabob Bazaar by Brendan A. Dell
ne of the many things that make the region such a delightful place is the great variety of cuisine served at area restaurants. The global aspect of the regional food scene provides for abundant opportunities to sample and savor edibles from anywhere and everywhere. If you are looking to sample the tastes of Persia, Kabob Bazaar would be a great place to start. With two locations, Arlington and at 7710 Wisconsin Avenue in Bethesda, Kabob Bazaar serves up traditional Persian fare in a relaxing atmosphere.
included hummus, kashk o bademjaan (baked eggplant served with fried onion, garlic, mint and boiled yogurt), creative yogurt offerings, and toorshi, a mixture of vegetables marinated and aged in Vinegar and spices.
Upon entry, patrons are greeted with strains of Persian music, creating a sense of welcome and of anticipation for the food to come. A television near my table broadcast a soccer match. The Bethesda restaurant also has seating available outside on Wisconsin Avenue.
The restaurant’s namesake made for an irresistible entree selection. I choose the barg chicken kabob, which was deliciously spicy, along with basmati rice topped with saffron. Other kabob offerings were the Kubideh kabob, which consists of two skewers of ground sirloin mixed with grated onion and house seasonings, the Chenjeh kabob, which was marinated chunks of prime beef, or the classic Shish Kabob, featuring marinated chunks of prime beef with green pepper, mushrooms, tomato, and onions. Kabob Bazaar also has lamb kabobs, and you can mix and match different flavors and meats, as well.
I started out with the Salad Shirazi, which had chopped cucumber, fresh herbs, tomato, onion, along with a serving of fresh homemade bread. Other salad choices were a Taboli salad, along with more traditional selections. The appetizers
Kabob Bazaar is a wonderful place to become familiar with Persian cuisine. With such a great variety of different kabobs served in a relaxing atmosphere at reasonable prices, Persian food could become a habit. Recreation & Welfare | January/February 2015 27
