States generally continues to be one of progressive ideals and a vision of broader rights. After all, San Francisco brightly continues to shine on the coastline, a beacon for the LGBT community in looking up and looking westward. Harvey Milk called us to awaken here. Del Martin and Phyllis Lyon celebrated their commitment here, twice. There is a pulse of vitality for our minority here; like a heartbeat perhaps in echo to that which began in Greenwich Village back in 1969. In early 2010, a civil union bill passed the Hawaii state legislature; the governor has until July 6th to allow it to pass into law or veto the measure. Washington State offers very comprehensive domestic partnership benefits, thanks to the courage of many pro-
equality groups and individual citizens such as Charlene Strong. Oregon, Nevada and California also provide domestic partnership status to same-sex partners. Each state has its own set of laws and guidelines with regard to gay and lesbian commitments; it’s important for couples to take the time to review their legal rights and responsibilities prior to their own ceremony. Couples are further encouraged to update their legal documents (wills, powers of attorney, etc) on a routine basis -every five years or so- as the laws do continue to change. Depending on your state, the city or county clerk’s office should be able to assist regarding the process of registering as domestic partners as well as in providing other pertinent information.

America’s backdrop for numerous movies and TV shows, and the area is home to many celebrities, including Oprah! Santa Barbara’s rich history-studded ambience is due to other factors too, including clean white beaches and sand-side cafes, exceptional shopping and dining in tucked-away Spanish courtyards, the best in hotels, and all the services you need. This city is ideal for a Riviera-style destination wedding. Wedding planner, Percy Sales (sayless) of Percy Sales Events, who recently created a Santa Barbara wedding for clients Cesar Juarez and John Gonzales, explains that there is another mark in the Santa Barbara’s plus column too. “Santa Barbara is a The Spanish adobe-style Santa Barbara Mission is an icon of very LGBT-friendly place. The mid 1800’s Rancho era remains influential too, evidenced by the still-existing ranchos, area agriculture, and vast vineyards. During the post-Civil War era Victorian-style residences sprung up overnight, but when many failed to survive the 1925 earthquake, City fathers declared that downtown Santa Barbara would officially return to the sturdier Spanish Colonial adobe. In contemporary times, the city has frequently “gone Hollywood,” providing a luxurious

describes as “a beautiful boutique hotel located in downtown Santa Barbara.” The Canary boasts a roof-top, poolside wedding site with lighted fountains, massive fireplace, and a 360-degree view of the Mediterranean-style city below, and beyond, to the Santa Ynez Mountains and the Islands. Another unique venue is the Firestone Winery on the Firestone’s Crossroads Estate. Ceremony and reception areas include the Crossroads Polebarn situated in an oak-filled meadow; the Curtis Winery with wrought-iron chandeliers, high-beamed Mediterranean ceilings, and the Barrel Room with French Oak Barrels; and the Firestone Walker Brewing Company’s Taproom with an antique bar imported from London’s Liverpool Street Station.

Santa Barbara also offers you a wedding where your guests might include giraffes, an elephant, and a monkey or two – the Santa Barbara Zoo! Percy says, “It’s the only zoo I know of that is located at the Pacific Ocean. The hilltop reception space has expansive views of the Santa Barbara Harbor and can accommodate up to 300 people.” To experience a true piece of history, also consider the San Ysidro Ranch in the Montecito area. The Ranch was originally a late-1700’s waystation for Franciscan monks, then a citrus ranch in the late 1800’s, and finally, a guest ranch, as it is today. Guests over the years have included Gloria Swanson, Somerset Maugham, Jean Harlow and Groucho Marx, and the honeymooning President and Mrs. John F. Kennedy. If an ocean-side wedding is more your style, the palm-tree studded Chase Palm Park Center (wedding site for Percy’s clients Cesar and John) features marine-themed art, a large patio for outdoor dining and dancing, and a carousel in the adjacent Chase Palm Park. But if a water’s edge ceremony is still not close enough to the water for you, why not have your event on the water, on the Channel Cat, one of the world’s largest sailing luxury catamarans, which coasts the gentle Santa Barbara Harbor. The Channel Cat has a 35-foot bar, which the owner calls “the John Wayne Bar.” And speaking of cowboys, if, in true oldwest style, you want to “cowboy up,” the perfect venue is the Carriage and Western Art Museum, with a backdrop of historic wagons, stagecoaches, and saddles once owned by Will Rogers, Clark Gable, and Jimmy Stewart. Accommodations There are many wonderful places to stay in Santa Barbara, including one of Percy’s favorites, the Orchid Inn. This boutique bed and breakfast features lush gardens, fireplaces, and jacuzzis, and is located in one of Santa Barbara’s most historic areas adjacent to the city’s first home, the Trussel-Winchester Adobe.
As a commitment destination Santa Barbara offers a diverse selection of venues such as the 35-foot luxury catamaran Channel Cat (pictured above)
Upham Hotel and Country House, constructed in 1871, is steeped in history too, and in fact is registered with Historic Hotels of America as Southern California’s oldest continuously operating hotel. There are sweeping redwood verandas, and each guest room, ranging from large master suites to intimate cottage rooms with garden entrances, is unique in its décor. Vendors Santa Barbara is also home to many LGBTowned and LGBT-friendly wedding vendors, including Creative Services Catering and Event Planning. Creative Services owner and chef, John Eric Savage, has developed a very unique Santa Barbara Menu, and also specializes in custom-designed menus created just for your event, whether you select passed hors d’oeuvres, a sit-down dinner or buffet, on the beach, in a mid-town garden, or the vineyards of a local winery. Kaleidoscope Flowers is another vendor you’ll want to visit. This family-owned business is known for its unique creations, incorporating what the designers refer to as “interesting elements” such as mosses, beautiful stones, curly willow, and seasonal fruits. Kaleidoscope can accommodate all of your wedding-theme wishes, and they offer some unusual ideas including dish gardens, dried florals, and gourmet baskets for gifts.

The Western US On more of the relaxation end of the entertainment spectrum, your guests will want to take a Santa Barbara Trolley tour, with stops at Stearns Wharf, the West Coast’s oldest operating wharf; Mission Santa Barbara; the architecturally exquisite Spanish-Moorish Santa Barbara County Courthouse; the Andree Clark Bird Refuge, a 42-acre saltwater marsh; and other points of interest.
Working with an officiant with whom you are comfortable is essential, and you’ll find yourself immediately at ease with Alma Rose Middleton, owner of Weddings by the Sea. Alma explains that she is a non-denominational minister/ officiant, not discriminating against any faith, culture, or lifestyle. Although she has an affinity for beachside weddings, as you might guess from the name of her company, Alma is enthusiastic about a wedding in any setting. Your Santa Barbara Weekend In Santa Barbara the problem of boredom will never arise for your guests. In fact, the only problem will be deciding among the dozens of exciting activities the city offers. Your more adventurous guests will want to explore the Santa Barbara Sailing Center’s resources: sailing lessons, whale watching, kayak excursions. Or, they might like a very unique type of wine tasting experience, biking with Santa Barbara Wine Country Cycling Tours from vintner to vintner through the gentle wine country region. For a different type of adventure, the Chumash Casino, just north of

Another way to indulge in all Santa Barbara has to offer is the Segway. Rentals are available at Segway of Santa Barbara, an ideal means to see the sights, including the 65-acre Santa Barbara Botanic Garden, with more than 1,000 species of native plants and miles of hiking trails; and Alice Keck Park, featuring botanic gardens and Koi- and turtle-filled lily ponds. There are countless museums, including the Santa Barbara Historical Museum, and on Sunday mornings, your guests will enjoy the traditional “Sunday morning stroll” along Cabrillo Boulevard, to dine and explore the blocks-long beach-side display of works by local artisans. The Western US hiker’s paradise. You have the wine country in Santa Ynez, and you have lovely coastal and mountain drives. Swank. Trendy. Vintage. Artisticallyinspired. Truly, the possibilities are endless when it comes to your Fabulous Gay Wedding in Chicago. This lively city offers a vibrant and historic backdrop, with diverse flavors and cultural heritage from all over the world. Whatever your Dream may be, it’s absolutely possible in the Windy City. Same-sex marriage may not be legally recognized as of yet; however, every weekend finds couples throughout Illinois choosing to tie-the-knot. For locals, as well as those from out-of-state who envision a destination wedding in Chicago, this energetic hotspot has a draw that can prove irresistible.
Your Ceremony
The rich cultural influences within the city translate to a wide variety of options for you and your partner. As you plan your wedding, you’ll have the opportunity to pick and choose from virtually limitless settings and themes. Outdoor parks, with views of the many waterways or the expansive Lake Michigan, can provide a signature location as you exchange your vows. Weddings on the water are even a possibility, onboard a private vessel weaving its way along the Chicago River. Non-denominational churches abound, as well as gay-friendly
synagogues and other spiritual settings. Local officiants are often well-versed in many religious traditions, including Catholic, Muslim, Buddhist, Jewish and Interfaith.

Your Reception
Architectural delights reign in Chicago! Choose to party with your guests while overlooking the cityscape, enjoying the impeccable service and style available at gay-friendly venues such as The Mid America Club, Hard Rock Hotel or The Holiday Inn Chicago Mart Plaza (proud sponsor of the 2009 and 2010 ‘Same Love, Same Rights’ LGBT Wedding Expos.) A spectrum of unique venues can be found throughout the city, including the Brookfield Zoo, where couples can choose an entire package to create the wedding of their dreams. …Lush, landscaped grounds for the ceremony itself, cocktails ‘with the animals’ midst a backdrop of one of the exciting desert, rainforest or underwater habitats, and a fully catered reception in one of the tented Pavilions. Or consider a gala at the renowned Navy Pier, with stunning panoramic views of the lake as well as -schedule permittingthe opportunity to end your once-in-alifetime evening with the famed Navy Pier fireworks display. Visions of a Garden Party? No problem. Dinner Cruise onboard a private yacht? Absolutely. A black & white classic affair in the Theater District? Why not! It’s all possible in the Windy City!
Your Honeymoon
Within the neighborhood of Lakeview, incorporating the popular stretch of North Halsted Street, is the first officially recognized gay village in the United States... namely Boystown. Everything you’d expect is right here in the district: a buzzing nightlife, savory cuisine (including vegetarian and vegan options), faddish shopping & fashion, coffeehouses and lots of rainbow flags. For a fun day’s outing after the nuptials, Boystown is a necessary stop and one in which you and your partner will not hesitate in announcing proudly that you’re newlyweds.

If music is your passion… Chicago is of course noted as the Blues Capital of the World. With Blues Clubs (as well as fierce jazz clubs) throughout the area, enjoying lively dinner dates with your new spouse or dancing the nights away will be an integral part of your honeymoon in the city. This year’s Blues Music Festival is scheduled for June 11-13th in Grant Park. With over twenty miles of lakefront access, tourists have the opportunity to swim, picnic, fish and explore at their leisure. Ranked as the tenth most bike-friendly city in the country (Bicycle Magazine, 2010), Chicago offers an extensive network of bike lanes, bike culture as well as environmentally-conscious amenities. Museums are another wonderful way to spend time together, such as the History Museum, Frank Lloyd Wright’s Robie House in Hyde Park, or the famed Chicago Art Institute, with an astounding collection of over 260,000 works and artifacts. Chicago may be known for its hot dogs and deep dish pizza, but with its diverse cultural heritage there are more dining options than you can possibly indulge in during a short week or two! Be sure to make it a priority to at least consider some of the ethnic specialties – you’ll be glad that you did!
Bringing It All Together
The key to making the most of your Wedding Celebration in the city is to remember that just about anything is possible. Seriously consider including a local event planner, who knows the area thoroughly and has a strong network of contacts: he or she will ensure that you & your partner are informed about all the opportunities available. Whether your guest list is in the hundreds, or you’re envisioning a small intimate gathering... the Ceremony of Your Dreams awaits right in the heart of Chicago!
YES you can do your own
Wedding Flowers! by Dee Dee Meininger contributing writer
O
ne of the growing trends in the floral industry for weddings in 2010 is for couples to do their own wedding flowers. In the past, many people feared this task but now they are embracing it as a way to get exactly what they want and save money at the same time. If you think you might like to give it a try, here are some great ideas that might inspire you.
Doing your own wedding flowers is an investment of your time but can be very satisfying and fun. Many “do it yourselfers” invite friends, relatives or their wedding party to help. It is even better if you can offer your helpers drinks and something yummy! Be prepared with fresh flowers, gloves and scissors and you are well on your way to creating your own artistic floral creations and lasting memories.
Some products to consider when doing your own wedding flowers are fresh rose petals, roses, seasonal flowers and greens and pre-made wedding garlands. All of these products are available from wholesale flower companies and can even be purchased online. Here are some great ideas on how to use each of them.
Fresh Rose Petals are one of the easiest products to use because they take absolutely no special skill. All you do is scatter or toss where you want them. Many people create a wedding aisle with fresh rose petals or place fresh rose petals around a centerpiece. You might also like to scatter fresh rose petals on your cake table and welcome table or float fresh rose petals in a bowl. It is a lot of fun to fill your flower girl’s basket with fresh rose petals or to have your guests shower you and your new spouse with petals as you leave the ceremony. Of course, you may decide to just lay fresh rose petals on your bed or any romantic place. Remember fresh rose petals add color, drama, fragrance and elegance to any setting; just use your imagination. Roses are another popular flower for creating romantic arrangements because they come in so many colors and they are available year round. You can easily create a classic and romantic handtied bouquet with roses and,

for ceremonies with two grooms, designing a simple but glamorous table arrangement with wedding roses provides an elegant and fragrant polish to the festivities. You may like to use spray roses for your petite flower girls’ accessories and these add a natural garden look to your arrangements. For those of you who desire a more seasonal theme, you may choose to fill your vases with loose seasonal filler flowers as an informal centerpiece. You might want contrasting colors as your bouquet or try creating a monochromatic design with different types of fresh flowers,

all in one color. There are also many different varieties of fresh foliage that can be used to make your designs look unique and professional. They add structure to your bouquets but they can also be used as the focal point of an arrangement. Garlands are another way to use foliage and sometimes you can purchase them already made. You can drape a pre-made garland over an archway or along your aisle from chairs or pews. They are stunning on a mantle or encircling a candle on a table. If you decide to design your own wedding flowers, make sure to do your research and find a flower company that you can rely on. You will want to order your flowers well
in advance and have them arrive several days before you need them. Once you have placed all of your flowers into buckets of fresh clean water, you are well on your way. Have your containers ready and an inspirational photo available for everyone who is helping with the arrangements, so they create the look you want. This process is a lot of work but it can be a lot of fun as well. You really can take part in creating your own visual and fragrant memories you will surprise and delight yourself and your guests! t
by Susan Hart Hellman contributing writer he year 2010 ushers in a new decade, and new trends in weddings. To help with your planning, three prestigious event planners, below, have provided you with their insights and suggestions.
Frank J. Andonoplas, owner of the Chicagobased Frank Event Design, is a frequent guest on such programs as 20/20 News Magazine, CBS Evening News and Early Show, Fox News, ABC News, and he has been featured in Modern Bride, Special Events Magazine, and Brides. Bernadette Coveney Smith is the President of 14 Stories and It’s About Time Events, working with weddings in Massachusetts and New England and destination weddings. She is the author of Gay Wedding Confidential: Adventures and Advice from America’s #1 Gay Wedding Planner. Marcinho Savant, Senior Event Coordinator at savvyplanners of Manhattan, Key West, Hawaii, San Francisco, and Beverly Hills, and a Travel Agent for Savvy Travel™, is also a course developer and instructor for Lovegevity’s Wedding Planning Institute. Their advice on trends, invitations to honeymoons, will be especially important in 2010 because one trend these professionals recognize is larger weddings. Marcinho, whose work has been lauded by Martha Stewart Weddings, says he’s noticing increases in guest lists, between 150 and 300+ invitees. “In years prior, we’ve designed weddings for as few people as the couple and one or two close friends, but the trend is now upward.” Frank, designer of social and corporate events nationwide since 1992, recommends using event size as a planning starting place. “I think guests are important, and couples should start
there and work their budget around their guest count. People make the party.” Bernadette, who also has a degree in Film and an MBA, says that although weddings have averaged 75 to 100 guests, for 2010 she also expects increased numbers, and for gay weddings to be more elaborate. “There is more momentum around this issue politically, so with more mainstream support, comes bigger and more elaborate weddings.”
t
hemes and venues
For many couples, this also means more elaborate themes, and Bernadette recommends this as a starting place for your design. “Every wedding tells a story,” she advises, “and a wellplanned event tells that tale in delightful ways that you and your guests will remember forever.” Marcinho believes that anything can become a theme in 2010. “GLBTI couples will make the thematic choices that match their individual sense of style, their nature, and their likes.” He provides some examples. “I’m inspired by creating subtle yet sumptuous elegance in every form from minimalist, impressionist, cubist forms, Viennese Royal Court lavishness or Japanese simplicity, Van Gogh, Seurat, and Rembrandt. There are so many inspiring sources for your 2010 wedding, including your venue’s architecture.” Those venues in 2010 will range from a backyard Weeping Willow canopy to the grandest ballroom, and Bernadette has noticed a trend toward boutique-type hotels. “Creative venues almost always attract LGBT couples. If couples are traveling to a state where it’s legal for them to marry, they are likely to stay in these properties such as Kimpton Hotels. Although this is often the case, each couple has different tastes, and an LGBT wedding may be in a hotel, historical home, country inn or somewhere else entirely.”
Wedding Trends And what’s blue (or red, or yellow, or green or any other color of the rainbow we’ll be using this year)

Marcinho anticipates the use of boutique properties too, but says every type of venue will be popular including large hotels and estates. “Church notwithstanding,” he adds, “we are suggesting many ‘out of this world’ venues including 1930’s and 40’s theaters, rainforests, botanical gardens, yachts, castles, even private islands.” He can even design events on zero gravity flights.
t
he ceremony
Whatever the venue, ceremonies will be innovative too and Frank reports that one new trend is the ceremony in-the-round. “I’ve done this in all types of venues, from hotels, to lofts, to art museums.” He explains that the circular configuration features a main aisle for the processional, and usually two others where guests enter and exit. One trend Bernadette has noticed is the desire to make guests feel comfortable and relaxed.
28 Rainbowweddingnetwork MAGAZINE
“One of the strongest trends I’ve noticed is that guests are often greeted with champagne or sparkling water. Immediately following the wedding processional, the officiant leads the Validation and Affirmation, where guests toast and bless the couple. This serves to truly help everyone relax and set the tone that this is not your typical wedding.” Vows will change for some couples too, but for others, will remain strictly traditional. Marcinho explains, “As the number of denominations increases which will embrace and honor our unions, so will the more traditional vows. We have had some deeply religious couples for whom traditional rites were vital.” But, he is also seeing more couples working with nondenominational celebrants to customize vows. Bernadette sees this trend also. “The legitimacy aspect is huge for LGBT couples, and many are turning to celebrants who are writing personal, meaningful and memorable wedding ceremonies, or couples are asking friends to officiate.”
Initiating a lighter, celebratory atmosphere while also setting the guests at ease, the Best Man serves champagne as the event begins.
Frank agrees. “If you marry in a church or synagogue, they may insist you use there vows. Most couples in a non-liturgical setting will want something more personal, however.”

Even wedding attire will be different, and Frank says what is worn will coordinate with the type of wedding, and that brides’ dresses will feature lots of ruffles and rouging. “There will be layers of fabric with just some beading and embellishment, and bridesmaids will be wearing the same color and fabric, but with varying styles based on what looks best on any individual attendant.” Marcinho predicts, “Well-tailored and dripping with classic couture style for men.” He adds, “Wedding attire will follow more of the trends and fashions shown in the latest tent shows at New York Fashion Week. There is a sleekness and comfort of fit juxtaposed against an homage to ‘Mod” styles of the past. Think 50’s and 60’s formal dress attire, but with contemporary details. “Twenty-first century brides and grooms will focus on no-fuss, low-maintenance styles. Light and airy, draped or wrapped dresses, and wrinkle-free fabrics are going to rein, and satin & taffeta will fall to natural–feel fibers such as raw silk, hemp, and microfiber material.”orals
The gown above represents a departure from the weight seen in many traditional bridal fashions. Draping is used to create depth and volume. Light & airy is the predicted trend for 2010.
Florals will also change, and Frank predicts a mix of the styles of centerpieces, but using the same florals, or centerpieces featuring the same color, but different flowers (monobotanical) at each table. Marcinho says, “Next season we’ll debut some very innovative presentations using two opposing elements of nature. I see many more submerged florals in large containers.” Music These planners predict changes for the musical portion of the ceremony too, and Frank says, “Classical and timeless is usually the way.” However, he adds that one of his couples has chosen “Clocks” for the processional and “Sweet Child o’ Mine” for the recessional. “The music must match the couple’s style.” Marcinho emphasizes that processionals will become “the heralding moment.” “The best thing brides and grooms can do for themselves is to choose a tune of great personal significance. It could be Mendelssohn, but couples might find the family favorite soothing to their nerves as well.”
30 Rainbowweddingnetwork MAGAZINE
A mono-chromatic arrangement of roses. Photo by Mary Wood, Atlanta
Bernadette predicts more “greening” in 2010 weddings. “Some couples are already using potted plants or gorgeously designed vegetables instead of cut flowers in their arrangements. LGBT weddings typically have a huge green advantage in that with most, the ceremony and reception are in one location, saving energy and fossil fuels in the transportation.” Marcinho’s firm has gone so far as to develop an initiative, savvySustainability™, a pledge to help couples be more eco-savvy, protecting
feature our planet, Marcinho explains. “There will certainly be, and should be, more recycled items. We can still have glamorous, stunning and memorable events but eco-stewardship is the new black!” estinations Where will weddings be occurring in 2010? Destinations, another new trend, with definite “hot spots.” “We’re seeing an increase generally in destination weddings, and in our Key West and Hawai’i locations,” Marcinho explains, adding that these destinations are so popular, in part, due to their gay-friendly nature. Bernadette explains another reason for an increase in destination weddings: legality. “Gay couples are going to go where it’s legal to get married. There may be big celebrations in their hometowns, but the bottom line is that LGBT couples want to legitimize their relationship. There is nothing more dramatic than the historical pronouncement at each legal gay
wedding – “by the power vested in me, by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts (or other state), ‘I now pronounce you legally married.’” Frank predicts a definite trend in theme color too. “I think the new hot color for 2010 will be yellow mixed with something -- kind of like we saw with light blue a few years back.” He says lighting will continue to advance in importance too. “Lighting makes a huge difference. I urge my clients to work this into the budget.” Black and white, jewel tones, and splashes of color are in sight for 2010, Marcinho suggests. “Classic combinations such as black and white will be adjusted to include dark grays and eggshell as a possibility in lieu of more traditional black and white.” He thinks shades of the same color will become more popular than one hue of a single color, and adds that continuity between ceremony and reception will become the norm.
f
Likewise for Bernadette. “Whether it’s a color or design scheme, the first impression you leave with your guests is an image that can be cohesively carried throughout the wedding or event.” And she believes in conveying your theme to guests immediately. “Let the invitations begin the narration of your story and make your event unforgettable right from the beginning.” With the influence of The Food Channel and food-themed movies, cuisine will continue to dominate our minds, and Marcinho says one key word in wedding cuisine is: sustainability – using sustainably-harvested or local food products. “That’s going to be big in 2010. It’s simple to do, he explains, with the food being fresher than anything shipped in, and it’s ecosavvy. “Themed cuisine such as Japanese, South Asian, Korean, and others will win the day.” Sit-down dinners will be important, Frank reports. “This is the most elegant service, and I

feature dessert; sweets stations; passed desserts, including monogrammed petit fours; and the increasingly popular pie bar. Regardless of the choice of additional desserts, Marcinho says a wedding cake is a must-have. “It’s a critical food and décor consideration. The unbelievable creativity in cake design today is understandably desirable.” He says his couples become ecstatic when he tells them the TV cake designers available to them. After that, he quips, let them eat cake, practically becomes a couples’ motto!

There are changes in beverages coming too. “If a couple doesn’t like Champagne,” Frank explains, “they shouldn’t serve it. Toasting with wine is becoming very popular.” In fact, a wine bar was a special feature at a recent gallery wedding he created. Marcinho says even the water served will change. “Couples want clean water, such as local spring water. He suggests that couples will also be scheduling tastings at local wineries and making decisions from among the local “masterworks.”
Trends for 2010 will reflect the diversity of the LGBT community with ceremony venues ranging from private yachts (top) to a more traditional church setting. Including pets within the ceremony is also a growing trend. Susan & Kelli, wed onboard private yacht in Key West; simple ceremony with no guests. Tropical floral garland encircling railing. Three course meal prepared below decks by a private chef and servers. Wedding designer Marcinho Savant says, “This created an intensely private, personal & intimate wedding for our couple.” Top Image: Peter Estenoz Photography 2nd Image courtesy of Shena Kaye, Poetic Images
One trend reported by wedding planner Frank Andonoplas is the inclusion of family pets in the ceremony. Above, Frank (left) and partner Shawn, and Bichon Frise, Fenwick Ambercrombie Gaylord.
see a duet entrée still very popular, or orders taken tableside, instead of picking on your response card. This costs more, but it’s worth it.” Dessert, of course, is a trend that will never lose importance, and in 2010 there will be new options. Frank says, simply, that dessert should be an event. “It’s a splurge for the guests to indulge in.” If there is a cake, he says he saves that creation for last. “The cake should pull in the whole event.” But he adds other options, saying that in 2010 there will be wonderful plated

ntertainment
How about a reception with Geishas, Taiko drummers, female impersonators, or living statues? Innovation will become a trend in entertainment, and Marcinho says, “Couples want an unforgettable good time at their reception. It’s their way of thanking the guests who came to share the big day!” Nothing will be too far-fetched. “Why not a famous circus with a French name? Why not strolling dessert tables?” Marcinho asks. “The new approach to events is that it is theater! We’re rejoicing in our recognition!”
photography/videography
What’s new in recording your dream wedding? Responses were unanimous: in with the old. “Couples still want a mix of black and white and color,” Frank explains. “Posed and photojournalistic.”
“Black and white is classic and offers much more depth and texture in many photos,” Marcinho states. “It’s here to stay. And candid is the trend because it is clearly more communicative and ‘real’. “
t
he honeymoon
“By now, couples need to de-stress,” Marcinho says, explaining the increasing popularity of taking some official time off, with Hawai’i and Key West representing new hot spots for honeymoons even if the wedding is held elsewhere. Frank has seen a surge in the popularity in several locations too. “Hawai’i is huge right now. I had one couple who backpacked in the wine country, and Europe, Paris, Italy and Greece are also popular.”
o
ne final trend
Marcinho offers one final trend for 2010. “GLBTI couples are not bound by tradition because our weddings are ‘uncharted territory’. Our weddings are new and rare and precious and hard won! I would love for a trend for 2010 to be that couples don’t deprive themselves of the day they really want. It’s your day and it must be the way you envision it.” Susan Hart Hellman is a freelance writer based in California. susan@susanharthellman.com

A Destination for your Commitment? How About Beautiful, Gay-Friendly Eureka Springs, Arkansas? by Shanna Mac Lean contributing writer
Spring Street with the Flat Iron Building. Photo: Chris Litherland creativecommons.org
Nestled in the Ozark Mountains amidst sparkling lakes and rivers, with spectacular sunsets and its own captivating Victorian charm, Eureka Springs has been one of the best kept secrets of the wedding
world. Second in the number of “hitching” ceremonies performed only to Las Vegas, this small capitol is a natural destination for gay and lesbian commitment ceremonies and Holy Unions. If you are looking for a charming, intimate, unique and special place for a meaningful commitment ceremony and a beautiful vacation together, consider this one of a kind historic town.
Eureka Springs has long been a mecca for artists, writers and those who choose an alternative life to crowded cities and the corporate jungle. Its large gay population makes Eureka a haven for diversity and adds a unique
flavor to this small but cosmopolitan locale. Two diversity weekends each year, including Valentine’s, bring parades, parties, glamour and general merriment. From March through November, almost every weekend has a featured theme from Antique Cars to Blues and Jazz Festivals. A small opera company performs in June and July, and the first weekend of July is Africa in the Ozarks. Eureka Springs was known as a popular place of healing waters in the mid 1800’s. To this day it offers luxurious body comforts such as massage and all manner of spa treatments. The number of massage therapists is only exceeded by the number of ministers ready and waiting to perform ceremonies of differing kinds. There are 800 or 900 ministers registered at the City Hall in a town where the population of the inner city numbers under 3,000. There is plenty to do in Eureka Springs!

The Southeast For those who enjoy the out of doors, there is plentiful fishing, boating and rafting on Beaver Lake and the White River. In the summer, camping facilities are readily available and comfortable and there are caves to explore in the area.
A woodland stream in the heart of the Ozarks. Eureka Springs is situated ideally to offer a variety of outdoor activities.
Aside from pampering the body, there are outstanding restaurants here, art galleries galore, a writer’s colony and endless shops with unique temptations. Theatre, popular night clubs, live entertainment at the Eureka Auditorium, hoe downs and the famous Passion Play fill the evenings. The décor is Victorian, with many beautiful restorations from the 1860’s. This includes stunning hotels and many charming bed & breakfasts and inns.

There are many idyllic ceremony sites, including a gay-friendly chapel overlooking a spectacular view of the water. Engagement Portrait Tips by Lorraine A. DarConte contributing writer
here are a number of reasons couples should consider having an engagement portrait taken. The obvious one, of course, is to create a record of the occasion and preserve those special memories. Another reason is to spend some quality time getting to know your wedding photographer (and vice versa), so everyone feels less like strangers at the big event. Hence, I recommend couples hire a photographer who includes engagement portraits in his/her wedding packages. As a photographer, engagement sessions are important to me because they allow me to see how comfortable a couple is in front of the camera (some are naturals, others need a lot of help); and, believe it or not, how at ease they are with each other (some couples are so anxious in front of the camera, they act like they just met!)
38 Rainbowweddingnetwork MAGAZINE 38 Rainbowweddingnetwork MAGAZINE
More importantly, an engagement photo session clues me in on what the couple (and each individual) thinks of his/her smile, profile, eyes, etc. These likes and dislikes are revealed both at the time of the shoot (“This is my best angle!) and when the couple sees the photos (“My nose is so big!”) What I might consider a regal nose, strong profile, or athletic figure, they may consider their least attractive feature. Being armed with this information before I photograph the actual wedding lets me devise ways to minimize those so-called “flaws” and/or try to avoid photographing them altogether. Choosing a Location Choose a spot that has meaning to you— the movie theater where you met, the park where he/she proposed, etc. If nothing comes to mind, ask your photographer for suggestions.
Also, think about your personalities and how you want to present yourself to friends and family. Do you want a casual, fun, on-location photo, or a more formal, posed shot in a studio setting? To help you decide, ask yourself these questions. Which scenario best suits the two of you? At which location will you feel most at ease? Will you be sending the photo to friends and family as part of an announcement, and if so, what style -fancy or informal- is the announcement? And, which type of photograph are you more likely to display? What—and What Not—to Wear The photo should focus on the two of you -your faces and your body language- not your clothes. Yes, clothing says a lot about you, but don’t let your duds do all the talking. Wear simple, comfortable outfits, preferably in dark, solid colors (you’ll look slimmer) and try to coordinate your look. This does not mean
The Southeast you should show up dressed as twins (but if that’s your thing, do it!) Don’t wear colors that clash such as pink and red, and try to avoid “holiday” combinations like black and orange (Halloween) and red and green (Christmas) as that’s what will come to mind every time you look at the photos. Yes, it’s okay to wear black and/or white, as a good photographer will not have issues with that. Finally, steer clear of prints unless it’s subtle, and even then, one of you should be wearing something solid. Don’t wear stripes if he/she’s wearing polka dots, etc. Not sure what to wear? Bring a few outfits and let the photographer help you choose. Hair, Makeup and the Sun Contrary to popular belief, this is a good time to try a new hairstyle or lipstick, for some, but not all, of the shots. If you can make a quick change (a bun instead of your usual ponytail) that will help you decide on your wedding-day “do,” then go for it. Keep makeup to a minimum and avoid glossy lipsticks, sparkly eye shadows, and oil-based foundations as the sun and/or the camera’s flash can “bounce” off these slick surfaces and make you look like an alien.
s
Relax and Have Fun Finally, ignore the photographer (trust me, he/she will be thrilled) and focus on each other. Have fun, look into each other’s eyes, run, jump, and wrestle; tease each other, flirt, and kiss. PDA (public displays of affection) is de rigueur! If you can relax and be yourself, you’ll more than likely be pleased with the results. Surprise Photos About to pop the question? Then surprise your bride or groomto-be not only with a ring and a proposal, but also with photos of the momentous occasion. You can hire an “Engagerazzi” to hide in the bushes and record the joy, the tears, and the kisses!

On hot days, bring some blotting tissues to help deal with sweat (and drink plenty of fluids to keep skin hydrated and “plump” for the pics.) Excessive tanning, whether at a salon or poolside, should be avoided as you run the risk of looking “muddy” on film.

The Salem Witch Memorial
Looking for a romantic, cultural, adventurous and historical vacation all in one? How about a wedding celebration set midst world class restaurants, museums, nostalgic charm and an emerging gay & lesbian community? Did you know that Salem, Massachusetts offers these exciting opportunities, along with 2 TAG approved full-service hotels, and several LGBTfriendly or gay-owned inns and B&B’s? It’s all this and more, that makes Salem an ideal location for same-gender weddings! As you stroll through the historic cobblestone streets of Salem, you find yourself surrounded by some of the best shops, boutiques, art galleries, museums and finest dining options in the Northeast. Hailed as the “Witch City” worldwide, Salem is a charming seaport town, easily accessible to Boston, 17 miles by car or the Salem Ferry to/from Long Wharf North. Many couples have chosen Salem as a destination of choice for their wedding because of its openness to everyone - not just one group, religion or way of life.
Mayor Kim Driscoll says, “Salem is proud to be a no-place-for-hate community. We have learned and teach lessons of tolerance from the tragic Witch Trials of 1692, and today Salem’s visitors, guests, and residents find a welcoming environment regardless of their lifestyle.” This is clearly the message that is spotlighted within the recent exhibit “Witches - An Evolving Perception,” at the Salem Witch Museum. Although the local community has monthly gay events, friendly bars and entertainment, it’s the culture and history, both mystical and nautical, that has evolved Salem into an ideal LGBT ceremony-reception location. The city boasts gay-owned shops, restaurants and B&B’s including the Morning Glory Bed and Breakfast that is consistently rated as the #1 B&B in Salem on Tripadvisor.com. The Finz Restaurant, located on picturesque Pickering Wharf, offers great views of the harbor and an ideal location for rehearsal dinners: sumptuous local flavors accented with signature martinis. Kristen’s father read the above excerpt from Winnie the Pooh when she and Nancy got married last winter. Standing on the dance floor of Boston’s Milky Way restaurant in Jamaica Plain, he read directly to the two women from a page he had decorated himself, just after we had honored the memory of Kristen’s dear mother and Nancy’s beloved father. Everyone knows that Kristen is a big kid at heart, which Nancy adores, and the sweet and poignant passage was perfect for them. Drawing on special words that have meaning to you both can be a wonderful way to personalize your wedding. Wedding readings—poems, blessings, excerpts and favorite passages included throughout the ceremony—convey your thoughts and beliefs on love and marriage. You certainly do not have to have readings, but words that reflect your unique relationship, your
work with to have fun with this! So, where to start? There are many resources out there, on the Internet and in bookstores, but the best place to start is with you — your own bookshelves and computers and music collections.
Favorite Books
For Stephen and Glenn, the selection of a passage from Giovanni’s Room, one of Stephen’s favorite books, meant a lot to both of them. Ceremony Reading Tips Appoint readers who are good performers. Not everyone is comfortable reading in front of a group! Think carefully about how your readers speak, how they feel in public, and what their experience is. It is a gift to deliver special words in a ceremony; it works best if you choose people who will enjoy their role. You can find other ways to honor and include shy people, such as helping you dress that day, handing out programs, making flowers or decorations, or tending to any young children in your party. Consider length. Listening to a reading is very different than being able to see the words and follow along. Generally, no more than three formal readings in a ceremony, with each one only about one to three paragraphs, is best. Choose the right reader for the passage. You probably don’t want your 12-year old nephew reading to you about “The Art of Marriage,” or a college roommate sharing your first love letter to your spouse. Think about the reader’s personality as well as your own, and select something that will feel appropriate coming from them. This will help make your readers most comfortable as well. Prepare properly. I always print extra copies of the readings for the ceremony, in large type, double-spaced, on a good cardstock so the page looks nice at the ceremony. It is more challenging for a reader to read directly from a program, or from a tiny, folded scrap of paper stashed in a jacket pocket or purse! Send your readers their texts as early as you can, and invite them to your rehearsal so they can practice in the ceremony space, and can ask any questions they may have. Amplify. Be sure that your officiant, or your venue, has a good sound system for the ceremony. Microphones can either be handheld, if the reader will be standing near the front, or attached to a podium. Make sure all your readers have a chance to practice with the microphone beforehand. It is important that your guests be able to hear these words you have worked so hard to find!
Important Moments It can be very empowering to include passages that have been an important part of your relationship already. Standing under their favorite tree, Cory and Amanda read e.e. cummings’ poems to each other as part of their vow exchange, poems they had given each other years before at a very significant time in their courtship. They were overcome with tears (as were many of us), as they read those emotional words from a time that was very powerful, now holding hands on their own wedding day. Love letters, or even early emails, can be very heartwarming to share as well. These are best read by the couple, or their officiant—it would be awkward to hear such personal words from friends or family. Find a passage that communicates on both

a personal and universal level, so that your guests can learn from it, rather than feeling excluded by something too private. If you share a little of the story behind your choices, or your officiant does it for you, it helps to include your guests in your journey. Of course, only impart what you feel comfortable with; the wedding is generally a ritual of celebration, acknowledgment, and looking forward.
Blessings of Faith For couples whose faith is a significant part of their lives, readings from sacred texts are often central to the wedding. Many lesbian couples choose the biblical passage from Ruth, “And Ruth said (to Naomi), “Entreat me not to leave you or to return from following you; for where you go I will

go, and where you lodge I will lodge; your people shall be my people, and your God my God…” Another passage that is often chosen, for couples of all walks of life, is I Corinthians: “Love is patient; love is kind…” This is always a lovely reading, but when I heard it read in an interfaith church service celebrating the one-year anniversary of the first legal same-sex weddings in Massachusetts, it took on a whole new, and incredibly powerful, meaning for me, especially this part: “(Love) does not insist on its own way… it does not rejoice in wrongdoing, but rejoices in the truth. It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends.” A strong reader, who knows what these passages mean to you, will be able to deliver them with the energy you wish. Prayers, offered either by your officiant, or by loved ones, certainly have a place in your spiritual ceremony; at the opening, before or after the vows, and at the end,

are good times to pause and pray. The Jewish Seven Blessings, sheva b’rachot, have been adapted in many forms, and can be especially meaningful when read by friends and family to you at the end of the ceremony. This can be a gentle and tactful way to include step-parents or significant others as well, inviting each person to read one of the lines in turn. One of my favorite versions ends with the blessing, “May you be best friends, better together than either of you apart.”
Cultural Connections When partners come from different cultures or countries, your lives already contain the richness of these experiences. Your ceremony can honor this as well. Readings from favorite authors can be read in their native language, and then read in English if you wish. I suggest reading it in the native language first, and then having someone special follow with the translation.
You might also include both versions in a program, so people can follow along. Becca and Teresa included a South African prayer in their outdoor ceremony held at the Stevens Estate in North Andover, to acknowledge the years they had both spent in Africa (at the same time, but didn’t know each other yet!) A groom from Brazil was delighted when his mother agreed to read a passage in Portuguese at his wedding; his father had passed away just a few years before, and she brought his Bible from their hometown to read from at the ceremony.
Family Support When you have open support from your family for your celebration, it means so much. When Matt and Mike got married at Hamilton Hall in Salem last fall, they asked their brothers, with whom they are very close, to read, and both were excited. Mike’s brother read the enchanting poem called “Pathways,” by Rainer Maria Rilke,

Your Turn

and Matt’s brother searched and searched for the funny and perfect poem he adapted from “The Promise,” by Eileen Rafter, ending with: “’Do you think then, my love, we should marry - do you?’/’Yes, (he) said smiling, ‘I do.’’” The groundbreaking “Goodridge” decision by the Massachusetts Supreme Court is a favorite reading at same-sex weddings all over the country, but it took on even more significance at Becca and Teresa’s wedding when Becca’s grandmother opened the ceremony with it as an invocation. It was fantastic! There is so much honesty and integrity in this passage; for more focus and personalization, you can select the parts of it that speak to your own marriage and the journey to this big day for both of you. Simply have your reader introduce it as “excerpts from…” to be accurate.
Musical Choices When is a reading not a reading? When it’s a song! A vocal piece, classical or contemporary, can be an unforgettable part of your wedding. A beloved friend or family member with a beautiful voice would most likely be honored to perform for you. Do ask respectfully, rather than assume. Lyrics make wonderful spoken readings too – I have quoted Alicia Keyes, Nora Jones, Andrea Bocelli, and Hoagy Carmichael in ceremonies. It can be a nice connection to the processional song, or even a “teaser” for your first dance later!
And don’t overlook the possibility of doing a reading yourselves in the ceremony! One couple chose to offer “A Prayer for Friends” by Michael Leunig to their guests at the end of the ceremony, as their first words as husband and husband, thanking their friends and family for all their support.
Weave It All Together
There is a psychological order to ritual, which you and your officiant can use as a guide in placing your readings throughout your ceremony. Words about your history, passages that reflect your backgrounds, or poems read by your families all might come early in the ceremony, as they reference where you each have “come from.” As the focus shifts to your relationship together, more romantic readings about love and commitment help provide context for your own vows and promises. And blessings and wisdom about marriage are ideal at the end, sending you on your newly-married way! Favorite passages can also be woven throughout the ceremony, quoted in the words your officiant says for you, or incorporated into promise vows or ring vows, or be read as prayers or invocations. Your ceremony can be very much a reflection of your love, and your creative and thoughtful choice of passages that reflect your values will truly make your wedding your own. She helps couples of all faiths and walks of life design personal and spiritual ceremonies to mark the major passages of their lives. American couples flocked to cities like Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver once same-sex marriage was legalized in 2005... and today many still make the trip in order to experience the wonderful feeling of legitimization inherent in such a declaration of vows. But there are other benefits as well: even if your home-state in America does not recognize your Canadian nuptials, the fact that you & your partner did enter into a legally binding relationship does show intentionality, with regard to future children or assets or other possible circumstances that may arise. And, when same-sex marriage is legalized across the United States, the fact that you and your spouse married once in Canada will in fact become recognized here as well!

onsistently rated as one of the best cities in the world to visit, and in which to live –as well as the recent host of the 2010 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games- we welcome you to visit Vancouver, Canada. … And why not get married while you’re at it?! -Not simply a domestic partnership, not a civil union, an actual marriage like every other couple in Canada regardless of their sexual orientation. Same sex legislation was passed in the province of British Columbia in July 2003. Since that time, thousands of same-sex couples have recited their marriage vows to one another in this fair city. And many are not residents of Vancouver. Many gay and straight couples see Vancouver as a place for their ‘destination’ wedding. Couples come from all over North America, Mexico, Europe, Australia and Asia to get married here.
So what does Vancouver have to offer? -A unique and innovative approach to nuptials which will surprise and delight you and ensure that when you leave this dynamic city, it will be with the intention of returning to repeat the pleasure of the experience. Do you want to marry on a snowy mountaintop or alongside the surf? Do you want to indulge your guests with a reception at the Aquarium, the Art Gallery, an elegant Mansion or a country Bed & Breakfast? It’s all possible in Vancouver. Where do you & your partner want to stay? High above the city in a penthouse overlooking the water, or tucked away in a mountain retreat where only the bears are witness to your celebration? You can do either… or both! Vancouver and the surrounding areas boast some of the most exquisitely beautiful scenery in the world. Add to that the abundance of gay-friendly hotels and B&Bs, with welcoming staff eager to cater to your every need…
and your Dream-Come-True is much more accessible than you may think! Need specific ideas for your wedding ceremony? Some couples prefer “traditional” and others lean toward the innovative. You can calmly walk down the aisle as a harp serenades or you can pledge your vows to one another as you jump out of a plane or plunge off a cliff with only a bungee cord attached to your ankles. The top of your delectable creation might be adorned with traditional soft rose petals or you & your partner may opt to send off your photos and have custom made resin figurines designed to resemble your sweetest moment. For those couples who have guests in attendance, you will want to make the

As a destination, Vancouver offers a wide variety of activites that are sure to speak to the unique tastes of any couple or guest. Whether it’s a trip to the famous Robson Street Shopping District (above) hitting the slopes of Grouse Mountain or enjoying the peaceful serenity of whale-watching, you’re sure to find your niche.
experience memorable for them too. Remember, you’ll have the joy of taking home a spouse; guests need something to take home too! Consider having place cards and take home gifts even if the parties are intimate. It is a small token that acknowledges your friends and family, and their choice to come and lovingly support this important occasion. Chocolates remain the most popular takehome gift, and for international guests and newcomers to Vancouver, local delicacies like maple syrup, smoked salmon or Aboriginal crafts are a wonderful reminder of the journey. Monogrammed ribbon or boxes lend a memorable touch. It is wise to take into account the seasons… If you have always dreamt of an outdoor ceremony, it’s recommended that your event should be scheduled between June and September. And it’s always beneficial to have a “Plan B” (which may simply be a nice white tent) in case Mother Nature decides to shed tears of joy at your wedding!
